As I Lay Dying sells out Loft

As I Lay Dying lead guitarist Nick Hipa remembers the moment he fell in love with the six-string. “Growing up, my whole family was really into classic rock, and the guitar always stood out to me,” he said from his home in San Diego. “Then, at 12 years old, I got my first electric guitar, and at that same time I started getting really into metal. My friends and I bought the same albums and taught ourselves songs and jammed out every day. “Things haven’t changed: I’m still just 13-year-old kid who loves guitar solos and awesome riffs.” As I Lay Dying, the fivepiece metal-hardcore group fronted by prolific lyricist Tim Lambesis, headlines The Loft in Lansing on Friday, Feb. 18, and the show is sold out. This isn’t surprising, considering As I Lay Dying usually plays larger venues, ala amphitheaters with Taste of Chaos, Sounds of the Underground and

The guys specifically wanted to plays smaller shows on this tour. “We’re playing all of those cities we haven’t played and showing love to smaller venues because we’re very aware through social networking that we have people who want to see us but don’t feel like driving three hours,” he said. “I feel like these cities are actually going to get the better deal, as far as seeing an As I Lay Dying show because we’ve been playing the new songs longer, and that makes for a tighter and more fluid set.” There’s something to be said about seeing a band this big in a venue as small as The Loft, which seats 400. Already-massive songs will become larger, amplifying As I Lay Dying’s rumbling bass, dynamic crescendos and chanting vocals. Expect a sweaty, exuberant, all-ages performance that brings hysteria (the good kind) to The Loft. As I Lay Dying’s latest full-length, 2010’s “The Powerless Rise,” packs intense tracks such as “Parallels” and “Anodyne Sea,” with sharp production. As typical for As I Lay Dying, the lyrics

Connections often start with a phone call. At least that’s how Courtney Millbrook, executive director for the Lansing Symphony Orchestra remembers it. “I had just come on board with the symphony in the fall of 2009, when Leslie Donaldson (director) of the Lansing Arts Council said to me, ‘You should call Missy Lilje at Happendance.’ ” Millbrook and Lilje met for coffee and began telling each other about their respective organizations. “I found out that Happendance does one big annual concert, and I told her about the LSO’s Chamber Series,” Millbrook said. Soon the idea of a collaboration between a five-member dance company and a small group of chamber musicians evolved.

sing rehearsing Bebermeyer and Holtzer four to five hours daily in a duet to the Pärt music. Meanwhile Bebermeyer and Lilje continued to work with Sherman to choose music for the rest of the program. “We really wanted to include one pop song — something that would be accessible to the general public not familiar with classical music,” Lilje said. She had a work in progress to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” Then Sherman found a graduate student who made a transcription of the song for string quartet, and it was added to the program. Lilje and Bebermeyer had also found another guest choreographer interested in creating a work for the concert, Bill DeYoung, a

longtime member of the University of Michigan dance faculty. “I’ve known him since 1994, when I was a freshman there,” Lilje said. “He’s one of the teachers who have had the most impact on me.” DeYoung chose a 1923 Aaron Copland piece, “Movement for String Quartet,” and began commuting to rehearsals at the Happendance studio in Okemos. “It’s been a delight, throwing something at the dancers where I can see them move. They are a very dedicated group.” ”I feel like this is the strongest company we’ve had in a long time,” said Lilje, who has directed or co-directed the last five Happendance concerts. In addition to herself and Bebermeyer, the com-

pany of five includes Holtzer, Andrew Amos, and Patty Villanueva. All three teach dance in area studios in addition to performing with Happendance and other companies in the area. Happendance II, a company of 14 middle and high school dance students, joins the professional dancers for the program’s finale, choreographed by Lilje to Coldplay. Bebermeyer has one work to music by Bach and Faure, plus four vignettes, interspersed among other works on the program and performed in silence. Villanueva has created a dance to music for solo cello by Benjamin Boone. Chamber musicians on the program — Carlotta Amargos-

Rubio and Yoonah Na, violins, Johnathan McNurten, viola, Carrie Pierce, cello, and A Ram Lee, piano — will be on stage with the dancers. “There will be one or two points where we will involve the musicians—in a kind of playful interaction,” Bebermeyer said. “I don’t think anything like this has been done before here in Lansing,” Sherman said. “Any collaboration that works well opens people’s eyes. Newman calls it “an exciting opportunity” for the company she founded 35 years ago. “I appreciate so much that there is a new vitality in the Lansing area, and Happendance is part of the reason that’s happening.”

After Millbrook ran the idea by Timothy Muffett, LSO’s music director, and Richard Sherman, director of the Chamber Series. Sherman and Millbrook got together with Lilje and Matt Bebermeyer, co-directors of Happendance’s annual concert, and Diane Newman, founding director of the dance company. “We all agreed it was an idea we wanted to pursue,” Sherman said. Although the LSO chamber musicians had never worked with dancers before, Sherman had experience with such collaborations at the Chautauqua music festival in upstate New York where he spends summers. “Chautauqua has combined dance with chamber music a number of times,” Sherman said. “The audience response was terrific. People loved it.” Now the real work of connecting began. Happendance choreographers had been used to working with recorded music (often pop) that they had found and liked. Now they would be meeting with Sherman to find music for one- to fourstring players and/or a pianist. Sherman came up with a playlist, “Things I listen to in my car that I thought they might like.” He had one favorite: Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres.” “I was really moved by it, and I had found ... it had been a good bridge piece for people who had not heard a lot of classical music.” Lilje and Bebermeyer agreed. They brought the Pärt music to Cristina Perera, a choreographer from Brazil in the Lansing area for a few weeks last summer to teach master classes at the Ruhala Performing Arts Center. One of the dancers taking the class was Happendancer Tracy Holtzer, who told Perera about plans for the concert and asked her if she would be interested in choreographing for it. Perera works all over the world and has been artistic director for Cirque du Soleil shows. Lilje and Bebermeyer knew they could not possibly offer her usual fee for choreography. But Perera nevertheless agreed to create a dance for the concert, and spent her remaining two and a half weeks in Lan-

‘Cinderella Ate My Daughter’ BY PEGGY ORENSTEIN (HARPER)

I found this book fascinating, not only as a surreptitious “Toddlers and Tiaras” gawker (a most disturbingly absorbing reality show about parents whose toddlers participate in beauty pageants), but also as the daughter of a mom who had to begrudgingly give in to my demands for Barbies despite her better feminist instincts. It’s the latter experience that prompted Orenstein — an award-winning author on girlhood and the challenges of raising daughters — to write the book in the first place. When a bit of preschool teasing caused her daughter to jump from loving Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine to obsessing over the Disney Princesses, Orenstein was plunged directly into first-hand contact with the growing girlie-girl industry. This book tries to discern whether this sort of girlhood can fit comfortably within the world view of a mother trying to raise a smart, independent daughter. The final product is a witty, intelligent analysis that both entertains and enlightens. A must for every parent of a little girl.

up against U-M. Both State and Michigan are considered bubble teams (iffy to get into the NCAA tournament) and that final regular season game could prove critical prior to Selection Sunday. Ten losses, winning less than half their games against Top 20 opponents, Roe’s shaky knees, and whispers of “a team that gives up when the going gets tough” aren’t helping our tourney résumé. ESPN College Gameday comes to East Lansing on Saturday for only the second time in the program’s history, for a must-win game against Illinois. Admission is FREE to the general public with doors opening at 8 a.m. that morning. One catch: game time isn’t until 9 p.m. But hey: if you’ve got 13 hours to kill on a Saturday for a shot at seeing your face on TiVo? Go for it.

FEBRUARY SPECIAL

Sauerkraut & Sausage Pastie

LJ-0100068699

As we inch closer and closer to (IMO) the best day of the calendar year (Daylight Savings Time on March 13), each morning with more light is like a teaser of things to come. The days get longer and balmy temps soaring into the high 30s make me want to scamp about town in little more than a tee. It’s amazing what the months of January and February do to Michiganders. The sun shines for more than an hour and suddenly people in Meijer are letting you go ahead of them in the SelfScan aisle ... willingly! Random acts of kindness become more frequent. There’s less scowling. My alarming personal problem with road rage subsides to a somewhat manageable level … all because I can crack my sunroof. There’s an underlying issue here that has nothing to do with Seasonal Affective Disorder, especially if you’re a sports fan. LateFebruary and March are so full of sporty goodness it’s like the Old Country Buffet of viewing options. Belly up to the oversized-booth, folks. Here’s what you can look forward to in the coming weeks.

Fest headliner Atomic Tom goes viral iPhone video launches band to notoriety

“In October of 2010, New York’s Atomic Tom had their instruments stolen. Fortunately, they know how to improvise.” Those words appear before the YouTube music video for Atomic Tom’s “Take Me Out,” right before the guys show up on screen, playing their single on New York’s B train, without instruments. Each band member grips their beloved iPhone, strumming and beating the screens and recreating their alternative rock song. Piano, a microphone, guitar, bass, drums — it’s all happening. The result? The video went viral and had a million visits in just days. If you ask Atomic Tom frontman Luke White, those numbers were unexpected. “We were hoping for maybe 10,000 views in a month,” he said before a gig at Farmington State College in Farmington, N.Y. “We put it up late on a Thursday night, and the next Friday morning it was stuck at 300. We were like, ‘What does that mean?’ “But by 2:00, it was 50,000 plays, and we started getting phone calls like crazy, and it ballooned from there. It ended up the day at 200,000.”

Annual fest takes over downtown Anne Erickson | NOISE

Atomic Tom The guys — who headline Lansing’s Frost Fest on Saturday — credit guitarist Eric Espiritu’s brother for the idea. “He came to us with this idea to play the single on our iPhones, and we thought it was brilliant and had to do it right away, before anyone else would come up with it,” he said. “We thought to do it in a location that’s publicly risky, where we could get punched because people were wondering what we were doing on their subway,” he added, laughing. They recorded it in three takes, and by the third take, people on the bus were “really digging it.” The song is catchy as possible, with bouncing rhythms and pop-y, upbeat vocals. That sound is further captured on Atomic Tom’s current full-

length, “ The Moment,” written with the motif of “making the most out of life and the moment,” White said. “The concept of ‘The Moment’ is taking risks,” he said. “The title track is about being in a relationship with this girl, and she’s actually becoming famous on Broadway, and in order to keep the relationship, you have to make the most of every moment.” While the guys are relishing in the fanfare that comes with being a YouTube sensation, they’re mainly happy the video is getting their music heard. “People aren’t just watching the video, but they’re also checking our other songs on iTunes and Amazon and actually buying the record, and that means a lot to us,” he said. “That means the video is doing exactly what we wanted.”

Sara Pawloski has spent the past few weeks — make that months — prepping for downtown Lansing’s second annual Frost Fest. “It is hard to decide what I am looking forward to most — everything, I guess,” said Pawloski, who is the communications and marketing manager for downtown Lansing. “My favorite part about events like this is watching everyone have such a good time in downtown Lansing. It is really what makes throwing events like this so rewarding.” Frost Fest brings a collection of people to downtown Lansing, smack in the middle of winter, to enjoy the chilly season to its fullest. This year’s fest, happening Saturday, brings not only live music, but also an ar-

ray of activities to downtown. And it all takes place inside a heated microbrew beer tent. Yes, heated. Events: • A “Cold Butt” Euchre Tournament, where players sit on blocks of ice as they’re playing. “You can only remove your butt from the ice if you’re changing tables. Otherwise you’ll be disqualified,” Pawloski said. • Ice games, including pool, chess and checker tables to play, made completely out of ice. • Six different microbrews available from Michigan Brewing Company, one that’s an exclusive Frost Fest Scotch Ale called “Plaid Penguin,” brewed by MBC Lansing. Plus, warm hard cider and wine. Music-wise, there are two local acts playing — Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers (Lake Orion, Mount Pleasant folk/ soul) and Elliot Street Lunatic (Lansing modern rock) — plus, Brooklyn, New York-based alternative pop-rocker Atomic

Tom. “Atomic Tom is fun and memorable,” Palowski said. “I think they’ll put on an awesome show, especially in such an intimate atmosphere.” Pawloski hopes Frost Fest is a fun, memorable experience for residents. “It’s definitely a unique event, and we want to encourage a new demographic of people — students and young professionals — who may not be familiar with downtown Lansing to explore what it has to offer.”
