Dropkick Murphys pay visit St. Patrick’s Day is three weeks away, but don’t tell that to Celtic punk group Dropkick Murphys. Everyday is St. Patrick’s Day in their world. Almost. “We’re playing five shows in the Boston area on St. Paddy’s Day, so it’s going to be crazy,” said lead singer Al Barr, chatting from his Boston home on a Friday morning. As if that wasn’t enough fanfare for the season, Dropkick Murphys — who headlines The Fillmore in Detroit today, along with Against Me! — has a new album due out March 1, “Going Out in Style,” on their own Born & Bred Records/ ILG. Musically, on the Ted Hutt-produced (Flogging Molly, MxPx) disc, the guys stay loyal to the three chords and loud volume so important to the punk genre, but blend in an honest folk soul and Irish spirit that makes this undeniably

Barr, who rattles off Elvis Presley and The Beatles as key musical influences, says releasing a seventh Dropkick Murphys album is absolutely surreal. “I don’t think any of us dreamed this would be a reality, to make music for a living,” he said, “and now that it is, it’s obviously amazing. “We’re traveling all over and playing every night to people that want to see you. Dropkick Murphys. Unwavering punk rock energy, brawling rhythms, rebellious soul ... it’s all there. “I love the sound of the album, overall,” said Barr. “It’s a big sounding record. Our approach to recording was so different than any one before, because of the layering of the music, and I can’t get over how good it sounds.” Bruce Springsteen even lends his famous vocals to the band’s interpretation of the classic, “Peg O’ My Heart.” According to Barr, Springsteen is an active fan of the band. “In ’06, we started reading interviews with him saying that he liked the band, and his son actually got him into us,” he said. “We invited him to one of our shows in New York City in ’07, and he came out with his son.” The guys have been tight ever since, so it was a natural for Springsteen to collaborate on a track. “When it came down to asking him to do a song on the record, it wasn’t a stretch for us, but we were very excited when it came back a, ‘yes,’ ” Barr said. The thousands milling around the Lansing Center this weekend are the kind of people who take window shopping literally. They can also shop around for builders, contractors and remodelers for their home improvement projects at the Greater Lansing Home Builders & Remodelers Association’s 53rd annual Home Building and Remodeling show. It opens Friday and runs through Sunday at the Lansing Center. Bret Oleksyn of Odd Fellows Contracting in Williamston likes home shows because they let people meet contractors on a more casual basis. “It’s a little less intimidating,” he said. He knows some homeowners are there scoping out contractors and others are just there getting ideas and inspiration for their next do-ityourself project. “(Some people) get a great deal of satisfaction from taking something that was old and dilapidated and making it look new and useful again,” Oleksyn said. “That’s what got me interested and into the business.” The event features workshops to help homeowners learn to make improvements to their home. The 15 educational sessions address topics including financing, how to build with environmentally friendly materials, remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, increasing energy efficiency, buying and selling a home and more. Oleksyn suggests people should go to a professional any time they feel like they’re over their head with a remodeling need. “Some people want to do projects for themselves,” he said. “If they have the desire, then any learning curve or tool that they would buy is a joy. If they really are kind of lethargic about the whole idea, then even a small job they might want to consider hiring out. Generally speaking, the larger and the more complex the project would be, (they) would obviously call for a contractor. The simpler, quicker and cheaper a project would be, then I would say the homeowner could be capable of doing it.” Organizers expect more than 4,000 will attend the home show. The event sponsor, Meridian Plumbing and Heating, will give away a $5,000 prize toward the remodel of a kitchen or a bathroom to one attendee. Admission to the Home Building & Remodeling Show is $8 for adults; kids 12 and younger get in free. On Saturday morning, Home Depot hosts a workshop for kids.

Where should someone start if they want build a home?

The first recommendation I always make is to find the local home builders’ association to find qualified builders in the area and then start asking questions from there. I notice that a lot of my business is word-of-mouth more than anything. A builder is not someone you pick from the Yellow Pages. It’s about seeing their work and their credibility.

How does a builder help someone make sure they won’t outgrow their new house?

They usually outline what they’re doing and how they plan, as much as you can plan, (how) they want a family to grow. What people want and what they can afford are usually two different things, so they have to have their dream page and their realistic page and recognize what they’re looking for. Talking with the builders, even in just the first meeting, they’re going to get a general feel of square footage and dollars so they don’t go too deep into looking for a mansion when they’re really only looking for a three-bedroom ranch. Talking to the builders a lot of times is what educates in terms of square footage and what they can afford.

How has business changed for home builders in recent years?

The economy knocked the arrogance right out of everybody. In the good years, I had 10 home (build jobs). Then I had a couple of years I didn’t have anything but remodel jobs. A lot of builders have gotten their hands back into remodeling that never remodeled before. Some of us builders, like myself, were trade builders who started in the industry in a particular trade (and) we can keep our hands in it. I was a trim carpenter. A lot of us are back into it again at whatever age we are. We’re back pounding nails, and we’re actually finding that kind of gratifying.

What’s the market like for local builders this year?

I believe Michigan hit bottom a year ago and is on its way up. It’s a nice slow, steady (change). It won’t jump up as fast as we went down. Last year was a good year. I did two homes and a lot of remodel jobs. I am encouraged that it will be as good or better a year this year. I do think things are starting to come up.

FINANCING

Bill McLeod, mortgage manager at the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, offers tips about financing for property virgins

What’s the first step for a property virgin looking to buy?

The first thing you should do is pick out a lender, and sit down and talk with that individual, find out what (loan amount) they qualify for. That way when they go to sit down with a builder, they can give the builder their budget.

How can people figure out what they can afford in a house?

The standard is 29 percent of your total income should go to your house, and I think that’s a good way to look at it. I think a lot of times people look at homes and look at what they’re making right now, and don’t consider what may happen in the future. If it’s a twoincome family, a lot of times if one of those incomes are lost, they’re not able to make the payment or pay the rest of their bills.

What do people often forget about budgeting when they’re looking to move from renting to owning a home?

They want to make sure and take into consideration the other expenses that they’re going to incur from renting to buying. Things like garbage pick-up, heat and electricity. Those things often are included when you rent, but are not included when you own a home (in the monthly payment).

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

DIY ENERGY AUDIT

Identify ways to increase your home’s energy efficiency with a do-it-yourself home energy audit. The results will help you save money and make your home greener.

SEAL AIR LEAKS

Start your home energy audit by making a list of air leaks. The potential energy savings from reducing drafts in a home could be as much as 30 percent annually. Check for indoor air leaks by testing if you can feel air flow through electrical outlets, window frames, baseboards, door frames or any other surfaces you suspect are drafty.

INSULATION

“(Adding insulation) is kind of a nasty job but it is something most homeowners are capable of doing” remodeler Bret Oleksyn said. “That will get them the highest return on investment with sweat equity for energy savings.” Most homes, especially older homes, could improve their efficiency if more insulation was added. Check the attic, walls and floors. Don’t forget to check the basement. Address air leak and moisture issues in your home before adding insulation.

LIGHTING

Energy for lighting accounts for about 10 percent of your electric bill. Replace old bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, especially where lights are most frequently used. Check to see if your electric utility offers any incentives for purchasing energy-efficient lamps. Source: Department of Energy website. ‘Music of Motown’

Motown music is and always will be cool. After all, the Detroitbirthed genre went onto inspire generations of soulful music-makers, from the Supremes to Aretha Franklin to even Beyonce. That Motown tradition is the heart of national vocal quartet Spectrum — a group that celebrates the spirit of Detroit’s early sounds and artists such as like Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and the Four Tops. On Friday, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of music director Timothy Muffitt, will recreate hits like, “Under the Boardwalk,” “The Way You Do The Things You Do” and “My Girl,” at the Wharton Center Cobb Great Hall. “Motown is a Michigan original, and one of Michigan’s many contributions to the world of music,” Muffitt said. “We’re happy to present great works that are such a rich part of our cultural history.” Spectrum spent six years recreating the sound of the Four Tops in the Las Vegas productions of, “American Superstars,” and, “Legends In Concert,” before taking the Motown show on the road. These days, the guys — including Darryl Grant, Pierre Jovan, David Prescott and Cushney Roberts — cover everyone from the Temptations to Boyz 2 Men. “We are so looking forward to this

‘A Long Ride From Hell’ C ODE RED

(91 MIN, RATED R)

I have never seen nor do I intend to see a Steve Reeves’ “Hercules” picture, as the whole Swords & Sandals genre does little for me (save Fulci’s peerless “Conquest”), generally offering not much more than beefy men posing. And perhaps a chariot. But “Long Ride,” Reeves’ final film, is a spaghetti western and those are just my game. Though the “wrongly imprisoned, out for revenge” premise is standard fare, “Long Ride” manages to rise slightly above genre trappings, settling between the dark grit of “Django” and the majesty of Leone. The film features some solid action sequences (particularly the prison break) and the violence is just graphic enough to keep seasoned gorehounds from yawning. It all culminates in a climatic showdown that, surely so Reeves can strut his stuff, has him putting down his gun and putting up his dukes. A well-shot, sturdy spaghetti western and a minor shame that Reeves didn’t make more.

Chocolate Party

Michigan State University Museum communications coordinator Lora Helou calls the annual Chocolate Party “the feel-good event of the year.” The fundraiser for the museum is set for 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing. The gala lets chocolate enthusiasts marvel at the chefs’ creations and taste tons of locally made chocolate treats. Chocolate Party chefs will base their creations on the event’s theme, which is tied to the museum’s special exhibit “MASK: Secrets and Revelations,” which opened Feb. 13 and continues through Jan. 22, 2012. The exhibition showcases 200 masks from throughout history and around the world. Chefs’ entries are judged on visual presentation, use of chocolate and taste. • MSU Museum Chocolate Party • 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 27 • Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing • Tickets range from $25 to $75, available at the MSU Museum store, Bake N’ Cakes in Lansing, Sweetielicious Pie Pantry in DeWitt and How Sweet It Is in East Lansing. • www.museum.msu.edu/events/chocolateparty

THE EXCHANGE (517) 319-4500 314 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing www.lansing exchange.com

Seekouttheperfect’tini

Martini lovers, listen up. If you prefer your martini menu to read more like a book than a shortlist, cast your eyes upon The Exchange. I can’t speak for the high-brow, super-serious, shaken-not-stirred martini crowd, but if it’s whimsicality and variety you’re looking for, consider these offerings: caramel appletini, Michigan cherry martini, s’more martini, and the forintini. Yes, that would be a martini featuring lime, cucumber and lemongrass with a fortune cookie as garnish. If your response to such a list is anything close to, “FOR THE LOVE OF CALAMITY SAM — I MUST TRY THEM ALL!” you are in luck. Added to this revamped martini menu is The Exchange’s Martini Marathon. This challenge assigns participants to try 24 featured martinis in a year. Successful marathoners receive a T-shirt and Exchange martini glass. “We’ve only been doing it for a month now and we already had two people finish,” bartender Kara Kyser said. This fact is as impressive as it is alarming, though it’s safe to assume the winners attended at least one Martini Tuesday, when the drinks are just $5 each. The Exchange also features

NOISE file photo

drink deals on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, including half-off bottles of wine and half-off draft beer. But according to general manager Mike Woodcock, the unique martinis and drink specials are just one part of what defines The Exchange. “Every bar has its own concept,” he said. “Here we have live music six days a week and no cover.” That is a concept. A variety of acoustic and full band acts have played at the bar since it opened in 1998.

“They wanted a place where they could talk to their business clients and have a nice cocktail in a relaxed atmosphere,” Woodcock said. Between the exposed brick, high ceilings and lounge lighting they have it going on, The Exchange has come through on the “nice place” front. I don’t want to sound like I’m too easy to impress, but there was art on the walls. And draperies. I go to a lot of bars, and I assure you — both art and draperies are rarities.

Destroyer K A PU T T

(MERGE RECORDS)

With a promo sticker heralding the “epic ninth album” by Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar, also a key component of The New Pornographers), one expects gargantuan production and a sweeping musical scope. Instead, Bejar has crafted a subtle, decidedly retrosounding record that, while not slavishly devoted to the period, brings to mind the oft-maligned, smooth sound of late ’70s and early ’80s FM. Snuggling somewhere between Steely Dan and “Avalon”-era Roxy Music, “Kaputt” infuses Bejar’s impressionistic lyrics with flourishes of saxophone and a studio sheen that manages to sound more intimate the glossier it gets. Lead-off single “Chinatown” is a highlight, being wistfully evocative, riding on soft rock drums and spacy synth lines, with Bejar’s Bowieesque coo up front. A deceptively dense, melodic work, “Kaputt” is Destoyer’s most accomplished album and will hopefully open listeners’ ears and minds to the world of lush sophisti-pop.
