‘Remember’ McLachlan

“That’s the greatest gift about music. It helps connect us with each other and with ourselves,” she told SheWired.com in 2010. McLachlan has experienced setbacks and pains. At 40, her “marriage of 11 years dissolved” and “life kind of ended as I knew it and I had to re-connect with myself and find myself,” she told SheWired.com. Like many good songwriters, she used those emotions to craft honest, from-theheart works. “You know, sadness is painful. Growth is painful. Having the urgency to stay is pretty simple but you don’t grow much,” she told SheWired.com. “That’s the stuff that I work toward. In my darkest days, I would tell myself, ‘This is good. I am growing from this and I am learning from this and I will be better because of what is happening.’ ”

2010 was a year unlike any other for Sarah McLachlan. First, she cranked out her seventh studio album, “Laws of Illusion” — a collection of brisk, melodic folk-pop songs that recalled McLachlan’s late-’90s, pop radio heyday. Then came the revival of her Lilith Fair tour, after a 10-year hiatus. The 2010 summer trek — which hit dozens of North American cities including Detroit — featured some of the biggest females in music today, from Sheryl Crow to Kelly Clarkson to Mary J. Blige. It looks as if 2011 will be equally busy for the songstress, with a full-fledged U.S. tour (which hits the Wharton Center Monday) and three Juno nominations for Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Pop Album of the Year. Since coming on the scene in 1988, McLachlan’s soft, adult contemporary sound quickly earned loyal followers in her native Canada, as well as the U.S.

Passionate ballads “I Will Remember,” “Sweet Surrender” and “Building A Mystery” tugged at the hearts of thousands. Soon, McLachlan was winning Grammy Awards. Her albums were selling millions. McLachlan’s most successful, 1997’s “Surfacing,” went eight-times platinum. The hoopla culminated in Lilith Fair, a massive, femalefronted touring festival. The fest ran from 1997 to 1999 and raised more than $10 million for women’s charities. “We created something I think that took on a life of its own. It was so much bigger than the sum of its parts,” McLachlan told the website “After Ellen” last year. “I’d like to think that we created a sense of community that didn’t really exist before for a lot of women musicians … A lot of those friendships continued, and we dispelled a lot of myths within the industry about not being able to put two women on the same bill, not being able to play two women back-toback on the radio because ... people won’t listen. But guess what, they sure do! And they came, and they listened and they loved it.” Music, McLachlan says, is simply about connecting with others.

Got cabin fever? Yeah, we do too. Here are seven ideas for shaking the winter doldrums.

TRY A NEW ART FORM

Want to spark your creative side but can’t stand the idea of another afternoon at a paint-your-own pottery studio? Turn up the heat and try a glass-making class with local artist Craig Mitchell Smith. Smith’s artwork has been displayed at the Cooley Gardens, Dow Gardens and at Michigan State University. Now in a spacious gallery and studio in the Macy’s Wing of the Meridian Mall in Okemos, Smith teaches glass-making classes. For information, call 349-1345 or go to CraigMitchellSmith.com

SEND YOUR TASTEBUDS ON A VACATION

If you can’t drop everything and spend a week somewhere exotic but are aching for a bit of adventure, try a local ethnic restaurant and send your taste buds spinning. These four local restaurants are hiding in locations that aren’t exotic on the surface. Instead, they are tucked away in and around suburban strip malls with authentic ethnic cuisine. There’s no doubt you’ll find something new to sample on these menus, and who knows, the experience might even introduce you to your new favorite food. Instead of sticking with the familiar, like Pad Thai or Sweet and Sour Chicken, take a chance on a dish you’ve never tried before. • Thai Princess 1754 Central Park Drive in Okemos • Hong Kong Restaurant 315 S. Homer St. in Lansing • Altu’s Ethiopian Cuisine 1312 Michigan Ave. in East Lansing • Sindhu Indian Cuisine 4790 S. Hagadorn Road in East Lansing

ESCAPE INTO A GOOD BOOK

There’s no match for a great piece of literature when it comes to helping you find an escape without leaving home. Share that experience with friends over drinks by taking part in the Brew Pub Book Club. The group meets monthly at the Michigan Brewing Company in downtown Lansing. The next book the group is reading is The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich. The next meeting is scheduled for April 1. Go to cadl.wordpress.com or cadl.org to learn more.

PLAN A ROAD TRIP

The following garden veggies can be started from seed right now, even if you don’t have a greenhouse. Plant seeds in a loose mix of compost or potting soil if you don’t want to spring for specialized seed starting mix. PLANT NOW: Peppers (hot and sweet), broccoli, cabbage, peas. Keep your newly planted seeds warm and moist until they sprout (cover with a shopping bag or anything to slow evaporation). Pepper seeds actually prefer it hot — 70-80 degrees F is not too hot. Broccoli and cabbage as well as peas will germinate fine around 45 degrees, so your house should do the trick. Once sprouted, the plants and soil can be cooler and uncovered, but don’t start setting them out until the days are warmer. MIX IT UP. The Gardeners Roundtable at the Hunter Park GardenHouse is Sunday, March 13, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Swap ideas, tips and occasionally seeds and plants. Leaf through seed catalogs and enjoy a cup of tea. FUN SHOPPING. Speaking of seed catalogs, don’t forget to place your orders now for items other than seeds for the best selection. This means seed potatoes, sweet potato slips, or anything else you plan to plant. If you’ve got your own potatoes or

sweets that you plan to plant saved from last year, you still have some time before they need to be prepared for planting. And while potatoes can be planted quite early, multiple, staggered plantings are a good hedge against common pests like the Colorado potato bug. Search for Seed Savers, Johnny’s or other seed providers as a starting point. Choose varieties adapted for Michigan’s climate. SIGN UP FOR A COMMUNITY GARDEN. There are so many beautiful, fun community gardens in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties — darn near 100 of them. Sign up for gardening resources and community garden opportunities at The Garden Project of the Greater Lansing Food Bank. MORE GROWING OPPORTUNITIES. Besides traditional seeds starting indoors, “winter sowing” techniques can add a fun DIY side to your early season extension. Whether with re-used plastic wrap or milk jugs, old windows or other materials, nonstandard “mini-greenhouses” are created so seeds can be started ‘outdoors’ but in a more sheltered environment. Search for more winter sowing techniques — the options are limitless, from converting a kiddiepool into a hoop-house to simple small containers that are easy and usually already on hand in the recycling bin. — Gabriel Biber

‘The Name of the Wind’

BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS (DAW)

Winter is the perfect time for doorstopper novels, and I have been hooked into this epic for half a week now. I’ve officially reached the point where the story gets so good I want to start carrying the book with me everywhere I go. (I LOVE my old-fashioned book, even if it’s 672 pages). I picked up this first book in “The Kingkiller Chronicles” trilogy because the second book “Wise Man’s Fear” just released to major buzz. It’s high fantasy done to a gorgeous degree: a fresh medieval-style world seen through the eyes of Kvothe, a shadowy figure lying low as an inn-keeper until he is found by master biographer Chronicler. The meat of the story consists of Kvothe relating his notorious past, clouded over time by legends until his name had evolved to nearmythical status. It’s a fascinating unraveling, exposing Kvothe’s adventures from his youth through being orphaned and his eventual enrollment in a magical university.

Metro Bowl and Metro Entertainment houses two weekend nightclubs, The Metro and Club 300, plus 40 new bowling lanes, all in a comfy, 60,000 square foot building on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. If you’ve only gone to Metro Bowl to bowl, the space is expanding to host a variety of music nights. The Friday Night Music Series brings in popular local blues bands. This Friday features Lansing blues-rock group Frog and the Beeftones. The series was the brainchild of general manager of operations Kevin Golumbeck, who had been throwing around the idea with Mike Sommers of Lansing’s Automatic Blues Band. So far, patrons have packed the club on Fridays. “The music has been incredible,” Golumbeck said. “We have such great musicians in the Lansing area, and everyone in the blues societies and the customers coming through the doors have been very supportive and respectful. They are excited for the new venue and really hope to help it grow.” Metro Bowl also hosts a Saturday night Tejano music series with local bands such as La Corporacion, Tejano Funk, Los Carnales, Tejano Sound Band and Fuego. • Metro Bowl and Metro Bowl Entertainment’s Friday night blues night, this Friday with Frog and the Beeftones • 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fridays • Metro Bowl, 5141 S. What begins as innocent online correspondence between a photographer and an eight-year-old with a seemingly prodigal gift for creating art takes a variety of confounding and somewhat sinister turns in this modern documentary on truth and relationships in the social media age. The much-buzzed Catfish is something of a cautionary tale, with looselyformed warnings against the ease with which one can find and foster connections on Facebook or via text message, without truly knowing who you are talking with. It also packs a hell of a lot of suspense into its hour and a half runtime. If the film has one fault, it is that Nev the photographer exudes nonchalance in front of the camera that causes some otherwise tense scenes (particularly when he travels to Michigan) to play as staged events, undermining the film’s mood. Managing to be both touching and unnerving, Catfish is a consistently engaging film and is easy to recommend.

While our strength of schedule is a real boon with the selection committee, our RPI isn’t that strong and 13 losses (some of them extremely ugly) are a definite bruise on our proverbial apple. Right now, we don’t look like a team strong enough to compete in the NCAA tournament. Basically, a win tonight might be enough. A win tonight and a win tomorrow over Purdue would be more than enough. I typically finish these columns with a call to action — watch the game, support the team, blah blah blah. This week, do what you will. Tonight is a big night. All year long, Spartan fans have heard the same old song: “This is a MUSTWIN for Michigan State.” Well, that is actually true tonight. The MSU men’s team opens their Big Ten Conference Tournament with a game against the Iowa Hawkeyes (tipoff around 4:30 p.m.) and a loss could spell N-I-T for our guys. Most people remember the sting of our 20-point loss in Iowa City in February — but eight days ago, we walloped the black and yellow at the Bres by 19. A neutral court in Indianapolis might be just the ticket for MSU to finally expose Iowa for what they really are: a bad basketball team. And before you start in on that last statement: I am fully aware that we’re as close to mediocrity as we’ve ever been. To be blunt, this season has been a steaming pile of crap. We haven’t had the signature wins that catapulted the program to almost meteoric national prowess. We’ve lost players (to Iowa State?!) for reasons that only the walls of the locker room are privy to. We’ve been beaten, broken, nauseous, frustrated, scoreless, hopeless and utterly disparaged by national media and some bandwagon-deserters. We’ve lost at home: three times this season. And by God, we got swept by the University of Michigan. Bleak doesn’t really cover it, does it? Prior to the B10 tourney, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi (one

CAPRI ANDERSON (Charlie Sheen’s girl!)

Michael McCallum knows what makes a good feature film. After all, he heads up Rebel Pictures, a Lansing-based movie production company whose track record includes award-winning feature films, “Fairview St.” and “Handlebar.” McCallum premieres his third feature film, the romantic dramedy “Lucky,” Sunday, at Celebration Cinemas in Lansing. The film is already up for seven major awards at this year’s Detroit Independent Film Festival. Amidst a busy promotional week, McCallum took the time to chat with NOISE about the film and the importance of staying local. NOISE: “Lucky” has already been accepted into The Detroit Independent Film Festival. Congrats! McCallum: Thanks! Usually, we wait until after the movie premieres to send it to festivals ... But for this film, we actually got it done just in time to be able to qualify for the Detroit Independent Film Festival, so we sent it in. NOISE: The film is up for seven major awards at the festival: Best feature, best director, best actor, best screenplay, best cinematography, best supporting actress and best editing. Stoked? McCallum: I think everybody on the team that helped make this is really proud of it. Just getting accepted was the goal — to be in front of the crowd at Celebration Cinema and to be able to say, “We already got into our first film festival.” The success is a testament of how hard everyone has worked on this project. NOISE: “Lucky” is a dramedy about the ever-confusing dynamic in romantic relationships. How did the idea for the story come about? McCallum: The idea came over years of working with a close friend of mine, Justin Muschong, who is a talented screenwriter who lives in New York City. We had done other movies together and were kicking around the

“Lucky” is the third feature film from Rebel Pictures (Michael McCallum), UnSAFE Film Office and Vernacular Films. Justin Muschong co-star, with McCallum. • Show times at Celebration Cinemas, 200 E. idea of doing a sort of romantic dramedy — a drama with some comedic moments. It’s not autobiographical, but it all basically stems from situations we’ve heard about from friends, although very loosely. I’m most proud that it’s very relatable for people, and that people can see their own situations in it. It has some comedic moments, but it’s not pie-in-the-face humor. NOISE: One thing I’ve noticed about your movies is your desire to use Lansing actors and shoot in Lansing locales. McCallum: Thanks, yeah, I love using that local flavor. There was a point in time when I wanted nothing more than to get out of this city, but then I reached a point of maturity and realized there’s

something remarkable about having roots and living in your hometown and having resources to touch on. With this film, we shot some scenes in Decker’s Coffee Company and at Brannigan Brothers. If someone can see my movie and then buy a CD from (local musician) Sam Corbin or decide to go to Decker’s Coffee instead of a chain, then I’m happy. NOISE: What are the challenges of being an independent filmmaker in Michigan, especially with the tax incentives (possibly) leaving? McCallum: With the tax incentives going away, we have the same problems that we had before they started and while they were here: finding enough money and time. We all work day jobs. We’ve had to borrow money and take time off work, but it’s worth it. People have been supportive, and one reason we have such a good relationship with Celebration Cinema is because people come out and fill the seats for our movies. As for Rebel Pictures, the incentives never hit us, because we fly so under the radar compared to the productions that qualified. But we’re here living in it, so we have to band together, be supportive and spend money locally rather than go outside of our resources.
