BY J O W E L D O N (IT BOOKS)

One of the great things about working at a bookstore is that you often stumble on something fantastic that you never knew you were looking for. Fans of Betty Page and the rebirth of the Burlesque performance scene (there are now a number of troupes in Michigan) will get a kick out of this how-to guide to artistic striptease. Author Jo Weldon — founder of the New York School of Burlesque — looks beyond the basic voyeuristic nature of striptease to the empowering confidence that can be gained by a woman boldly assuming a stage persona and embracing her inner sensuality in performance. Weldon presents a breakdown of burlesque history in her introduction and then dives into the various aspects of performance such as inspiration, traditional show movement and choreography, the proper use of pasties, music and costumes. Using photo illustrations, the guide breaks down everything from the intricate moves of the fan dance to backstage etiquette. No self-respecting dance diva should be without it.

Ann Arbor-based Nervous But Excited has earned heaps of fans and critical praise with its upbeat, highenergy, feel-good brand of folk rock. A Nervous But Excited concert is more than musicians Kate Peterson and Sarah Cleaver playing song after song. It’s an entire event, with laughter, dancing and plenty of harmonies. The duo has played a range of high-profile festivals, including Motor City Pride, Michigan Pride Main Stage, Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival and National Womyn’s Music Festival, and they stop by the East Lansing Pump House Sunday, with special guest Mike Vial. • Nervous But Excited with special guest Mike Vial • 7 p.m. Sunday, March 20 • East Lansing Pump House, 368 Orchard St., East Lansing • $10 suggested donation

be able to play their St. Pat’s celebration.” As for The Lash’s longevity, Klajda believe it’s because the band’s sound is so unique — that unmatched blend of brawling Irish folk and American rock ‘n’ roll that makes it undeniably The Lash. “Nobody has ever been able to duplicate it, or maybe nobody has ever wanted to duplicate it,” he said. “Also, the band really has its own personality. “Even though there have been something like 18 different members in the band, the sound has always been consistent. I’ve been in it since the beginning, but I never tell people what or how to play. I think the band has such a strong personality that once you’re a member, you just know what to do to make it sound like The Lash.”

nce again, it’s time for St. Patrick’s Day, the annual Irish holiday heralded as a day to wear green, get pinched and kiss anyone who claims to be of Irish decent. The Lash is Lansing’s quintessential St. Patrick’s Day band. The Irish rock quartet — which includes Rob Klajda (vocals, banjo, cittern), Bob Bryan (drums), Jon Herrmann (bass) and Andy Wilson (accordion, whistle, harmonica, trumpet) — combines traditional folk instruments (fiddle, mandolin, banjo, cittern) with a rockin’ rhythm section of bass and drums. The result, as they call it, is pure “Celtic mayhem.” The group is coming up on its 15th anniversary, and they’re celebrating by taping an episode of WKAR’s “BackStage Pass” in May. More imminent, of course, is St. Paddy’s Day. The Lash is booked solid with four gigs in Michigan, including two in Lansing: one at The Claddagh Irish Pub (8 a.m. to noon) and another at The Green Door (2 p.m. to 4 p.m.). Vocalist Rob Klajda says things get extra hectic around the Irish holiday. “Things do get crazy on St Pat’s, and when it falls on a weekend, things get crazy for the entire week,” he said. “Since we usually do at least three full shows, we get to play every song we know.” Playing The Green Door, Klajda says, is a favorite for the band. “The Green Door, along with Moriarty’s Pub, is a venue that supports us all year round,” he said, “so it’s extra special for us to

Sometimes when I sit down to whip up a column, there’s an unintentional consequence that’s quite thrilling. Today, the AC/DC anthem “Thunderstruck” is just thumping in my head. It is time. The NCAA Tournament is upon us. (... THUNDAH!) What I desperately want to do is throw shameful amounts of hyperbole into this piece about the grandeur and amazement that awaits you in the coming three weeks — but I’d be preaching to the choir. This tournament needs no sales pitch. (... THUNDAH! + sick guitar riff) Fact is, nothing gets a rabid sports fan more amped than the prospect of four television channels entirely devoted to the wall-to-wall coverage of this event. And nothing gets MSU fans in more of a tizzy than (1) being in the tournament and (2) being an underdog. The guys squeaked into the field and start their run in Tampa against UCLA tonight. (... THUNDAH! + bass drum kick) UCLA has a humongous man (center Josh Smith) who hulks in the paint and makes Derrick Nix look like a high schooler — which we all know isn’t the easiest feat to accomplish. Couple that with the Bruins runand-gun style of transition-based offense, and they seem quite formidable. However, I’ve got the Spartans advancing. How was I going to pick against them in the first round? This is March. Tom Izzo in March. (... THUNDAH!) If we advance, we’ll likely face No. 2 seed Florida, which isn’t as mighty as its selected placement might suggest. The bottom line is this: MSU can make a run. With the “Season of Sullen” be-

hind them, the Spartans have new life in a tournament that graced them with a No. 10 next to their name. I feel like slapping a 10-seed on the Spartans is like dressing a Rottweiler in a tutu. Everyone knows we’re a dangerous team — and that is a fantastic intangible going into tonight, and every night until the season concludes. Now, we’ve just got to live up to that expectation. (... THUNDAH!) In addition to the awesomeness that is the men’s tourney, there’s another Spartan team playing in the postseason that might entice

you. The MSU women’s team starts its tournament at 7:45 p.m. Sunday against Northern Iowa. The women got a No. 4 seed, and that looks great when pondering a Sweet 16-type run. The team would relish a chance to play No. 1 seed Baylor in the Elite 8, in a rematch of a tough early-season loss for the Spartans. I’m looking forward to a fun week of hoops ... and hopefully I’ll be writing something at this time next week about what our chances look like in the later rounds. Cue the jock jams. There is typically one criterion for measuring Irish pubs: How authentic is it? I’m not really sure why. We don’t walk into sports bars and question their devotion to athleticism or require that our chef at Olive Garden’s last name ends in a vowel, but with Irish pubs, we become oddly picky. At these pubs we want there to be more Irish — or at least British — brews on tap than domestic, and if the menu doesn’t include bangers and mash, why even bother? So with all of these high standards for authenticity, when you’re on your way to an “Irish pub” that is one of a 15-bar national chain and is set up in an outdoor mall … one prepares oneself to be let down. But here’s the thing. Claddagh’s Irish Pub may be a chain, and it may be located in Eastwood Towne Center, and it may seem far more spacious than what you’d imagine an authentic Irish pub to be, but it also has some unexpected features. Among these are: an Irish owner

who lives in Ireland; all the interior woodwork was actually made in Ireland; and the menu features … curry fries. Delightful and delicious as these factoids are, they aren’t the only reason to get over the authenticity question of an Irish pub and just like the place. It’s also just a really nice, cozy bar. “The bar is beautiful,” said Kemery Kendall, who has worked at Claddagh’s for six years. “It’s large and comfortable. It’s the best of both worlds.” Though the bar is spacious, the stone archways and immense woodworking help to retain a cozy, pub feel. The drink selection behind the bar would make any Irishman — or at least IrishAmerican — feel at home. “We have 18 beers on tap and a large selection of Irish beer and whiskey,” Kendall said. “And our bartender won the Guinness perfect pint this year.” The what? Yes, there is such thing as a perfect pint of Guinness, and it apparently has everything to do with how the beer

is poured. Guinness representatives come to Lansing once a year to preach the wisdom and technique to a crowd of local bartenders, who then compete for the annual title. “There’s a finesse to pouring a perfect pint of Guinness,” Kendall said, “and our girls brought the award home this year.” Now that you’re assured your Irish drinking experience is as authentic as it could be, also be assured that the Irish eating at Claddagh’s is equally as satisfying. Beyond the excellent existence of curry fries on the menu, diners can enjoy all sorts of assemblages of corned beef, cabbage, fish and chips, very taste calamari and something called “bangers and champ,” which, if you ask me, sounds even more Irish than bangers and mash. “We have really diverse crowd,” Kendall said. “We get a lot of business people, people from the capitol, industry business from around the towne center, and a lot of families. It depends on the hour.”

Just in time for March Madness, the relocated Lou & Harry’s Grill and Bar opened its doors in Chandler Plaza. While its previous location in downtown East Lansing could be seen as a more convenient spot for MSU students, they will no doubt want to make the trek north. With its 120-foot bar top, more than 100 liquors, 40 beers on tap, 48 flat screens and three projection screens and a capacity of 500, Lou & Harry’s calls itself the biggest bar in Michigan. The televisions were admittedly a little overwhelming, but I can imagine sports-crazed fans spending half their day here. No matter where you sit, you’ll be in view of several TVs. Lou & Harry’s will roll out a full menu soon, but there is no shortage of choices in their food offerings for now, with appetizers (can’t go wrong with warm pita bread and hummus, $6.99), wings, burgers, sandwiches, and of course, the famous gyro. With about a dozen flavors, the wings (traditional or boneless) are highly recommended ($6.99 for six), especially the sundried tomato basil, which I thought sounded either really appetizing or really awful. It has easily become a new favorite. Other flavors include Cajun buffalo, Parmesan ranch and gold fever. Here are other spots in the area where you’ll catch Spartan fever (if you don’t have it already). Remember that the game tips off at 9:20 p.m. today.

DUBLIN SQUARE

326 Abbott Road, East Lansing 351-2222, www.dublin square.net East Lansing’s Irish-themed bar will be a double threat, with St. Patrick’s Day on the same day as the MSU men’s NCAA Tournament game, so be prepared for long lines and wait times; It will be worth it. The pub recently debuted a back bar, featuring numerous flat-screen TVs, projector and fullservice dining and bar. Best bet: Baked blue crab and brie, with Parmesan crust and served with warm slices of baguette ($11.99).

HARRISON ROADHOUSE

720 Michigan Ave., East Lansing 337-0200, www.harrisonroadhouse.com If you’re looking for a spot that won’t be dominated by students, this is the perfect MSU hangout as it’s set further from the downtown. Best bet: Spinach artichoke dip: creamy blend of artichoke hearts, baby spinach and cheese, served with warm tortilla chips.

SPARTAN HALL OF FAME CAFE

1601 W. Lake Lansing Road, East Lansing 337-4680 www.spartanhalloffamecafe.com

A true Spartan fan has been to this unofficial MSU restaurant at least once. Being here is a trip down memory lane with tons of memorabilia on the walls and in glass cases. Best bet: Lettuce wraps — sesame-spiced chicken, Shiitake mushrooms, water chestnuts and green onion on a bed of crisp noodles and vegetables; served with sesame sauce, sweet chili sauce and lettuce leaves ($8.99).

‘Mausoleum/ Blood Song’ BCI ECLIPSE (186 MIN, RATED R)

An out-of-print “Exploitation Cinema Double Feature,” this two-for from BCI promises “Demonic possession & a whistling psychopath.” Lurid guarantees to be sure, and while I cannot vouch (yet) for the whistler, 1981’s “Mausoleum” definitely comes equipped with a heaping helping of netherworld inhabitants taking residence in a comely female. A slightly ponderous but satisfactorily gruesome slice of early ’80s horror full of low-budget but excellent effects, “Mausoleum” follows a young woman, who after falling victim to a family curse, finds her body and very soul being overtaken by a malevolent demon. What starts as revenge against sexually aggressive or assertive men quickly turns to any in her path, as with a quick flash of glowing green eyes, the body count grows, culminating in a jaw-dropper of a bath scene. Even if “Blood Song” is a total waste, “Mausoleum” is a fantastic jolt of ’80s exploitation and a must-see for all cult trash fans.
