Danish metal-rock ’n’ rollers Volbeat can easily sell out 10,000-seat venues in Europe, and now the guys are building a fanbase in the states, thanks in part to scoring a U.S. tour with Metallica in 2009. Volbeat is currently on a North American trek that hits St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit on Saturday. NOISE checked in with frontman Michael Poulsen to talk about the band’s barrage of rock sounds. NOISE: How did you develop your unique sound — that marriage of metal and ’50s rockabilly? Poulsen: Music was always a big part of my home, and my parents were always playing Elvis, Johnny Cash, Little Richard and all those singers from the ’50s. So, all of those melodies

forward to going to a local record store and finding that record. NOISE: What was it like breaking out of the UK? Poulsen: In Europe, we have about 10,000 people coming to see us at every show, so it’s different coming to the U.S. We were very happy about being able to tour with Metallica in the U.S., and that made a lot of noise. So, it’s great to come into the U.S. and build everything up from scratch and see how it can all start all over in a new place, and see it grow. The venues we are playing in the U.S. are getting bigger and bigger, and it’s just an interesting process.

influenced me. Then as a teenager, I got into the heavy metal scene with Metallica, Motorhead, Black Sabbath. So when I started writing music, my melodies came from songs from the ’50s, but somehow I wanted to keep the distorted sound from the guitars and the pounding drums, so I combined those with the ’50s melodies. NOISE: Volbeat is really active on Facebook. From a musician’s standpoint, do you love or hate the Internet? Poulsen: It’s good and it’s bad. It’s an effective promotional tool. I remember back in the days when I was sitting and waiting a whole week or two to get an answer on something, and now you can get an e-mail in less than one second. You can also find a lot of great bands on the Internet. The thing is, I never download anything, and I like to find favorite bands in record stores. Spartan retrospective Men out early, women fall on road to Sweet 16

After a tough MSU loss, I like to find something to look forward to about Spartan sports, something to dull the stinging pain after one of our teams underperforms or takes a beating from a better team. This week, I struggle to find the antidote for what ails us. So the MSU men’s team bowed out of the NCAA tournament with little fanfare. Compared to the balance of games on the day they lost — a gamelong 10-point scoring spread coupled with lackluster play made for a box score that quickly fell below the fold on a national scale. We were, for the first time in a long time, out and forgotten by Friday morning on the first weekend. Around the same time, my bracket, for all its Green & White glory and faith, was beyond busted. In a perfect storm of disastrous basketball, our guys failed to function on all the levels we’d heard about before their matchup with UCLA. Spartan fans in Tampa and watching around the Mitten felt that sick feeling creeping in midway through the first half, as the Bruins continued to expand their lead and our guys just couldn’t score. Kalin Lucas, our now-former knight in shining armor so many times before, was silent from the floor in the first half. We couldn’t stop their behemoth freshman phenom in the post. Even though Durrell Summers decided that he’d show up and make some shots, none of the other cogs in the offensive wheel were turning. There was Draymond Green, who innocuously scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished 10 assists for the seventh “official” triple-double of the NCAA tournament. Yes, he is only the seventh player to accomplish the goal since the NCAA began to recognize the achievement (in 1987). But it didn’t really matter to Day-Day, did it? It didn’t really matter to any Spartan late on Thursday night. All that mattered was that a season so full

SPARTAN MEN

WHAT WENT RIGHT?

• Draymond Green showed his prowess as a true team leader, through on- and off-court troubles that plagued his team. He’ll be ready to step to the forefront next season. • Freshmen Adreian Payne and Keith Appling played valuable minutes in high-pressure games. They’re going to be seasoned just right for 2011-’12. • We learned that Delvon Roe is basically the Rocky Balboa of Spartan sports. Tough as nails and willing to fight robots. Well, the first one for sure.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

Lansing State Journal

Austin Thornton and Adreian Payne sit on the bench during the NCAA tournament game against UCLA last week. Below, coach Suzy Merchant directs her team against Wisconsin-Green Bay Tuesday.

• Senior Kalin Lucas failed to capture a national title, despite his frequency near the top. He graduates as one of the premiere Spartan players in hoops history, and will be sorely missed at the point. • Derrick Nix had another up-and-down year in which he never seemed to make it “over the hump” with Izzo’s schemes. Something has to break with Nix, or he’ll never truly mix in. • Senior Durrell Summers tanked his NBA-draft prospects with a fall from 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional MVP to 2011 Biggest Dud. A stunning and difficult conclusion to his career at MSU.

SPARTAN WOMEN WHAT WENT RIGHT?

• Coach Suzy Merchant is positioning herself as one of the Big Ten’s marquee coaches. Her program is now consistently named in the upper echelon of Division 1 women’s hoops. How do ya like us now, Joanne P.? • Most Improved Player Award winner Taylor Alton has developed into a point producer. The Colorado native is a sharp-shooter from behind the arc — expect to see set plays developed for her next season. • The future is bright: MSU is going to be big and deep in 2012. A great recruiting class coming in, coupled with the anticipated return of 6-7 center Madison Williams, has women’s hoops fans chomping at the bit.

of promise and hope and expectation was over. A season so full adversity, so full of strife and drama and losses — was finally over. Was I the only one who took a deep breath when the clock hit 0:00? I’ve never felt good about a MSU loss, but this was somehow different. As I watched Izzo hug his seniors after the game, wrestle with questions from the media about a disappointing season and deflect criticism of his kids’ play right back to himself (per usual) … I couldn’t help but think, “Maybe he needs a minute.” If there’s one thing an early exit last week showed us about the men’s basketball program at MSU, it’s that there’s no give in it. Despite a 23-point deficit in the second half, our guys managed to pull within one and give themselves a chance. And if your television remained intact after the first

WHAT WENT WRONG? 30 minutes of play — you were on the edge of the recliner/bar stool/couch, you were poised to leap. We suddenly were totally in it, totally capable of pulling off the unexpected impossible. Despite the 2010-11 season, I don’t think there’s one of us who doubts the potential of an Izzo-led team. And I completely trust in the process. We’ll all be leaping again soon. Let that prospect heal you, Spartan fan. Andi Osters, 28, is a Michigan State graduate.

• Seniors Brittney Thomas, Cetera Washington and Big Ten Player of The Year Kalisha Keane are gone. Losing three starters is never easy. Especially three starters who score the majority of your points. • Tournament performance in recent years hasn’t been awesome. Deep runs have been hard to come by and a team that only gets younger next year could again have trouble in the postseason due to lack of experience. • We don’t have a true point guard coming back. Someone will have to develop into one during the offseason — I’m looking at you, Jasmine Thomas. And by develop, I mean get better.

The cable television network’s newest hit, “Tosh.0,” attracts 4 million viewers an episode, even more than who watch Comedy Central’s signature programs “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report.” “Tosh.0’s” premise is simple: Stand-up comedian Daniel Tosh and a small team that works out of a Culver City, Calif., studio cull the Internet for amateur » “TOSH.0” video clips. Clem’s Comics & Games is selling a limited edition comic book that depicts Godzilla’s foot crushing its storefront location in downtown Lansing. Only 500 copies of the comic book have been printed. They will be available starting Wednesday in the store. Clem’s is one of 75 comic stores across the country offering a custom cover of the new comic with Godzilla’s foot smashing its storefront. The covers are individually drawn from photo references. “We asked the cover artist to try and add a little bit more of a Lansing flair to (ours),” said store manager Tom Flammer. “Beyond the fact that you can see our sign and familiar store facade being destroyed by Godzilla, you can also see the Boji Tower.” Co-writers Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh and artist Phil Hester have teamed up to create the books. The new comics from IDW Publishing feature Godzilla and other movie monsters, many that have never been featured in comic books before. “This promotion has resulted in unprecedented support and participation,” said Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Publishing. “We thought it was a fun idea when it was conceived, but thanks to so many retailers excited about having Godzilla stomp their shop, it has exceeded even our wildest expectations.” • Limited edition comic book • Clem’s Comics & Games, 216 S. the hapless victims caught on camera. The show’s cornerstone is a novel segment called “Web Redemption” in which the subjects of clips made infamous on the Web relive their embarrassing moment — but this time with a happy ending. Now in its third season, “Tosh.0” has become the first television show to turn raw material from the Internet into successful television programming. It appeals to young male viewers — an elusive audience for advertisers — making “Tosh.0” and its website a mustbuy for video game makers, movie studios and auto companies. Mindful that so many of the 20-somethings who relish Tosh’s brand of hijinks spend as much, if not more, time glued to computers and mobile devices than watching TV, the show’s producers have made it a priority to have a robust presence online. Even the show’s name invokes the language of the Web. Before the show launched in 2009, executives did something unusual for a TV production. Web producers were hired to work alongside show producers and writers. The geeks were even allowed into the hallowed “writers room,” where they could join the back-and-forth wisecracking that goes into preparing Tosh’s on-air jokes. “The show had to be live online. It’s a blog at its core,” said Erik Flannigan, executive vice president of digital media for MTV Networks Entertainment. “This is a show about the Web. And we had to make sure that whatever we posted had instant credibility on the Web.” Producers update the show’s website and blog throughout the day, even when the series is on hiatus. Traffic to the site, which is averaging 3.2 million monthly visitors this season, is on track to more than double from last season. The show’s ratings are up nearly 50 percent since last season.

Since the blog biz has burst onto the book scene, there are hundreds of disposable titles that will probably never sell because you can get everything in the book online for free. This book, a print version of some of the most hilarious comics found on Oatmeal.com, is one I can get behind, even while I browse the blog daily and religiously repost to Facebook. Creator Matthew Inman is one of my online heroes. I became a devotee after reading his viral post “Ten Words You Need to Stop Misspelling,” a dream guide for grammar Nazis. Thankfully, this book is an example of a blog done right: Somehow the comics are even funnier when presented in larger format and full color. That awesome entry is included along with fantastic posts like “How to Suck at Facebook,” “6 Reasons Bacon is Better than True Love” and “Why I’d Rather Be Punched in the Testicles Than Call Customer Service.” With titles like that, I need say no more.

Taproot

Taproot brings ‘Poem’

Taproot lead vocalist Stephen Richards always knew he wanted to be a musician. “When I was four years old, my mom got me my first drum kit because she noticed me air drumming and realized that even though I didn’t know what I was doing, I could keep time,” Richards said. Now Richards is part of the Taproot legacy. The Ann Arbor alt-metal group boasts CD sales in the millions and recording sessions with Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. The band plays The Loft in Lansing Friday, bringing crunchy, dark songs off its Victory Records release, “Plead the Fifth.” The band is most remembered for, “Poem,” off its 2002 album, “Welcome,” which hit No. 5 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Richards says the band had no idea that song would take off. “It’s funny because our biggest single was ‘Poem,’ and that was a song I wrote in four minutes,” he said. “It either happens or doesn’t. We just try to be creative and see what comes out, and hopefully a single or some success will follow.” • Taproot, Silent Lapse, Bloodletting • Doors 8 p.m. Friday, March 25 • The Loft, 414 E. The Strokes ANGLES

(RCA RECORDS)

With four years passing since the last dispatch from planet The Strokes, much changed in the realm of “cool kid” music. Everyone grew beards, lost their fashion sense and started taking cues from CSNY rather than Lou Reed. Wouldn’t seem like a hospitable climate for a revisiting of The Strokes brash swagger. So instead they toned down the attitude, tightened the songwriting and emerged with — and don’t call it a comeback — one of the year’s best records. By all accounts, The Strokes are plagued by inner turmoil, but this strife seems to have brought a melodic vibrancy and cohesion lacking in even their lauded debut “Is This It?” Julian Casablancas still sounds cooly detached vocally and introspectively self-aware lyrically, but the band is full of new tricks: swaths of New Wave synth, vocal harmonies and nuanced, clean production. They have the songs. They have the style. And with “Angles,” they have the finest album of their career.

Brunch is delightful at Beggar’s BEGGAR’S BANQUET

Esther Gim | NOISE

Beggar’s Banquet in East Lansing has always been about half-off wine and half-off appetizers. Why try something for full price when you can get it for half, right? Every time I visited for those specials (wine on Wednesdays, appetizers on Thursdays), the rest of the menu always looked appealing. So Agnes and I finally decided to check out their breakfast menu, which is served daily until 2 p.m. Options for breakfast are sparse in the downtown East Lansing area, and Beggar’s is the spot for a classy, late morning meal.

young adults who dominate wine Wednesdays weren’t to be seen.

THE SCENE

THE FOOD

It must have been a while since we last visited Beggar’s, because neither of us knew the restaurant knocked down the wall separating the main bar area and the dining area. It’s a good change, making the restaurant seem larger and more open than it is. A late Sunday morning visit brought out mostly older couples and families. The college students and the

218 Abbott Road East Lansing, 351.4540 www.beggarsbanquet.com •Kitchen hours: • 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays • 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays • 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturdays • 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sundays

Pesto omelet includes roasted red pepper, spinach, tomato and Feta cheese, topped with pesto sauce for $8.99.

The breakfast menu has 10 items, but the variety in choices — the most expensive dish is $8.99 — didn’t make it feel limited. Aside from breakfast, Beggar’s offers appetizers (the baked brie is my go-to choice), sandwiches, salads and entrees. The chili also is award-winning, which can run fiery. Agnes ordered the Cali

Benedict — two eggs poached to medium, served on an English muffin with tomato, spinach, avocado, then topped with hollandaise ($7.99). The perfectly poached eggs bursting over each muffin were as mouth-watering as they looked. The ingredients were fresh and the egg/hollandaise mixture was light. I had the pesto omelet — roasted red pepper, spinach, tomato and Feta, topped with pesto sauce, served with

wheat toast ($8.99). The pesto sauce jazzed up the omelete, which was on the dry side without it. Breakfast choices (except griddle items) are served with seasoned home fries or herb potato cakes.

THE DAMAGE

$18 (including tax, but not tip)

NEXT TIME

The seafood linguine sounds like a tasty concoction of jumbo Tiger shrimp, scallops, baby spinach, housemade pico de gallo, and cream with linguine and Asiago ($16.99, half $9.99).
