People’s Temple releases first fulllength album Anne Erickson | NOISE

Psychedelic rocker The People’s Temple is a Lansing success story. Through commitment and hard work, the guys have scored national tours, gigs at the massive SXSW Festival in Austin and inked a record deal with HoZac Records, a Chicago indie label known for hot underground rock ‘n’ roll. The band released a three-song EP last year. Now, they’re releasing their first full-length on HoZac, “Sons of Stone,” which drops at the band’s CD release show Saturday at Mac’s Bar. Guitarist and vocalist William Young chatted with NOISE about the band’s swirling psychedelic album. NOISE: Tell me about the new LP, “Sons of Stone.” William: The title of our debut LP pays homage to the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones have always been a band that we admire and from which we’ve drawn influence. Just recently, on our road trip to Austin, if you had been in the van, you would have heard the Stones! NOISE: What are you most proud of on the release? William: Looking at our

first full length, I see a mile marker to gauge in our music career. I am most proud that it finally got put together and mastered. All the time, energy, strain, travelling to record and patience — it has been almost two years of investment, and seeing it come to fruition makes me proud of (lead guitarist) Alex Szegedy. NOISE: What’s your hope for the CD’s unveiling at Mac’s? William: Since moving into Lansing, we’ve had a lot of support from our friends, so it is a show for them. Looking at the RSVP list, there are many familiar faces, and it will be a good celebration with them. NOISE: The People’s Temple played South by Southwest in Austin this year. Must have been a thrill! William: There are so many people, you feel like you are at the center of the universe. You are walking around, making connections … It’s hard to explain how you feel, but it is an overwhelming feeling. My music had brought me farther then I imagined. It was a great experience. Very overwhelming, with so little time to see so many great acts. Great, nonetheless.

onight is Opening Night for our Lansing Lugnuts (7:05 p.m.), the lovable Class A cog in the Toronto Blue Jays family. For a cool $8-10 a ticket, you can swing up to Cooley Law School Stadium and enjoy one of their 11,000 seats, the frustratingly catchy “Go Nuts” jingle and ridiculously cheap beverages. Tonight also happens to be Thirsty Thursday, which always proves a tempting topic for a miserly rant from yours truly. Last year, I penned a somewhat scathing critique of the average Thursday ’Nuts fan and I’ll stand by my feeling that the enjoyment of base-

ball does come secondary to the enjoyment of brew on these specific nights. However, I also noted that (after early May) I am a frequent attendee of Thursday night contests downtown. Face it: when the MSU students turn in their final exams, we summertime inhabitants know it’s safe to venture out again. Suddenly, the Peanut Barrel at 3 p.m. on a Friday doesn’t seem so daunting. There are parking spots at Tasty Twist again. And lo and behold: The Lugnuts restroom lines on Thursdays don’t feel like they could turn into “UFC 186: Bring On The Pain” at any moment. The one thing missing from Thursday ’Nuts games in the summer is the massive crowd — The feeling that you are doing the thing that everyone else is doing, because it’s the best thing going. But, regardless of when you go to a game you’ll still plop down in a seat

behind third base and know that a stream of families, college students, high school softball players, neighbors and friends are strolling the concourse behind you. It’s inevitable: you’re going to see someone you know. The beauty of the Lugnuts is that, since 1996, it’s been an affordable place to meet your community for a night of sport, food and fun. It’s become a #lovelansing staple. Regardless of your affinity for Labatt Blue Light, make sure you pencil in a Lugnuts game on your spring or summer schedule. Scratch that: pen in several. Be sure to check the promotional schedule online for sweet deals and even gimmicks on non-Thursdays (ladies night, ’90s night, live concerts, kids day and the new “$1 deal day” every Tuesday). Can’t make Opening Night? Don’t fret. The Lugnuts play at home again Friday (7:05 p.m.) and Saturday (2:05 p.m.). Go this weekend, or go this summer. Just make sure you go.

Blues nights at LeRoy’s

LeRoy’s Classic Bar and Grill is becoming one of Lansing’s biggest blues hotspots, with live blues music several nights a week. This week’s line-up includes shows with Freddie Cunningham and Root Doctor, Those Delta Rhythm Kings and Mark Hummel and The Blues Survivors. • Friday: Lansing-based Root Doctor has experienced everything good in blues, from being nominated for a Blues Music Award (the Grammy of the blues) to releasing riveting live albums, such as 2008’s, “Root Doctor: Live at the Cadillac Club” to topping the Living Blues radio charts. The guys known for their spirited, head-bopping blues progressions and get-upand-dance rhythms. • Saturday: Those Delta Rhythm Kings rock Lansing with their unique “jump” blues, swing and little Big Band sound of 1940s America. The Jammie Awardwinning group brings originals and covers from B.B. King, Count Basie, T. Bone Walker and more. • Wednesday: Blues harmonica mastermind Mark Hummel headlines LeRoy’s Wednesday, along with his band of players and blues guitarist Rusty Zinn. Hummel’s something of a harmonica prodigy, and he’s toured internationally for decades. • Blues nights at LeRoy’s • LeRoy’s Classic Bar and Grill, 1526 S. Cedar St., Lansing, 482-0184 • $5
