The Record Lounge moves to new stand-alone location

Anne Erickson | NOISE

Saturday marks National Record Store Day — a day to recognize great local brick and mortar shops that continue to employ music enthusiasts willing to help you find the perfect album (whether it’s CD or vinyl) to fit your musical tastes. The Record Lounge in East Lansing is celebrating with a benefit concert, “Jamming for Japan,” for the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami. “Kyle Brown from Fighting Unlucky approached me about doing a fundraiser for the relief efforts, and I was already brainstorming some ideas for live music on Record Store Day, so it was just a matter of figuring out how to combine the two” said Record Lounge local music director Joel Heckaman. So local musicians Heckaman, Brown, Dan Nufer and Ali White put their heads together and came up with the idea to have performers at various Lansing locales — mainly Espresso Royale on East Grand River Avenue and Biggby on Grand River near Valley Court Park. Twenty-seven artists will

It is a little-known fact that Sweden sits on mystically charged geographic coordinates whose powers pervade the nation with disturbingly gifted popcraft. With “Music Sounds,” the unfortunately-named Acid House Kings have delivered the mother lode. Though the sheer volume of cuteness on display threatens to smother you in an avalanche of sweaters, every second of the album is sometimes sweet, sometimes melancholy but always utterly infectious. Like their previous album’s “That’s Because You Drive Me,” still a perfect three minutes of pop, “Music Sounds” leads off with the album highlight. “Are We Lovers Or Are We Friends” masks the ambiguity of a potentially wasted relationship in lush production and a hip-shaking melody. Criminally overlooked in the U.S., Acid House Kings are due for discovery and with the sun finally emerging, “Music Sounds” and its warm charms could be what does it.

MIKE HUGHES For Lansing NOISE

M

ost of us know the big-movie experience — big theater, big stars, big crashes, big boxes of Raisinettes. Now it’s time for the flip side: The first Capital City Film Festival opens today. This has a youthful feel, including music after the movies. “Music is such a huge part of films,” said Dominic Cochran, a festival co-founder. He’s bringing a national act (Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s) tonight, a local man with a national following (John Beltran) on Saturday, a mixture on Friday. The festival has a Michigan feel, glimpsing Lansing (“The Peanut Shop,” “Respiration”), Ann Arbor (“Answer This”), Detroit (“The Spirit of Isabel”) and the Ingham County Fairgrounds (“Happy the Clown”). The one classic-comedy double-feature is a tribute to John Hughes, who was born in Lansing. Other films, however, are from far away. Several are from Burundi, one leaps between Oregon and Afghanistan, another follows an Iranian filmmaker to South America, seeking Che Guevara memories. Still, all share one trait. “These are truly independent films,” said “Isabel” director Robert Butler . ar So & So’s cle Nu Many are small in budget and in running e th & ot rg Ma time. “Shorts are a great way to tell a fun story,” said Joel Newport, whose “Happy” mixes gangsters, love and a clown. And festivals audiences seem to welcome surprises. “You’re with people who have a common interest,” said Brian Vander Ark, a rock star (Verve Pipe) and filmmaker. “These are people who love movies.” The result is more than the usual multiplex experience, said Kitao Sakurai, whose “Aardvark” opens the festival. “You’re interacting with people; there’s a lot of life and energy.” Some filmmakers are able to include familiar names: Van Ark cast himself in “Bullies on Vacation.” For “Shepherds of Helmand,” Gary Mortenson got narration from Donald Trump Jr. (“he’s the most regular guy you’ll ever meet”) and a song from the Zac Brown Band. For “Answer This,” Christopher Farah got production help from his brother Mike, president of the Funny or Die site; they emerged with a HolBeltran lywood cast (led by Christopher Gorham) and rich production values. Still, there’s also great work from semi-known actors. Butler got Screen Actors Guild approval, so he could cast a talented Detroit actress (Aphrodite Nikolovski) in “Isabel.” Newport made “Happy the Clown” through a SAG agreement; “it’s amazing the actors you can get for $100 a day,” he said. And sometimes, non-actors do just fine. In “Answer This,” a popular

‘Bullies on Vacation’ photo shoot University of Michigan professor (Ralph Williams) plays someone a lot like himself. “Aardvark” is based around the real lives of a Cleveland martial arts teacher and his blind student, then adds a crime tale and a police detective with a rich bayou accent. “He’s not a cop,” Sakurai said, “and he’s never acted before …. He’s just like that.” In particular, student films show what can be done without big names and big budgets. “We’ve all been guilty of skipping the student programs at film festivals,” Cochran said, “but don’t do that this time. Some of the best films are in the student portion.” Those student films cover a huge range. “Cankered and Cursed” has humor and artful animation. “Missile Crisis” has the sweet interaction of young brothers during the Cuban missile crisis. “Frank the Assassin” is funny, “Breadwinner” is bittersweet. Then there are Michigan State University students who tackled documentaries — some somber, some not. Nick Baker was one of four students profiling Michigan’s publicdefender system. “I’d never heard of the subject before,” he said. In the midst of a snowstorm, he drove to Detroit to meet the family of Eddie Joe Lloyd, who had been wrongfully convicted of rape and murder; Lloyd had emerged in poor health from 17 years of prison, then died two years later. On a lighter side, Curtis Matzke profiled The Peanut Shop in downtown Lansing. Alongside the usual questions, he asked about famous customers. “I expected it might be someone like Jennifer Granholm.” Instead, he learned of Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning actress Cicely Tyson emerging from a limousine to buy $2 worth of peanuts. It’s the sort of information you get from a film festival. Othello

SHORT “Bullies on Vacation,” 5:30 p.m. Friday Glancing at Brian Vander Ark, people might guess he’s a former bully. “Physically, I’m imposing, being 6-foot-5” and 200 pounds, he granted. But during his Grand Rapids boyhood, some 65 pounds ago, he was on the receiving end. “People seem to want to pick on the stringbean,” he said. If living well is the best revenge, then he chose perfectly, becoming a rock star. Now Vander Ark — of Verve Pipe fame — has written a short about a man meeting his former nemesis. He chose the later role for himself; “it’s much easier to act like a jerk than to be subtle.”

OTHER SHORTS

w “Bullies” is in the “Made in Michigan” package, with serious films — “Abandon” and “The Spirit of Isabel” — and lighter ones, led by “4 Pictures” and the offbeat “Happy the Clown.” For the latter, Joel Newport — a sound expert at local Harvest Creative Services — shot exteriors at the Ingham County Fair. w Some strong surprises are among the student films at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday. There’s a sweetness to “Missile Crisis,” a poignancy to “Breadwinner,” sly humor to “Frank the Assassin.”

‘Shepherds of Helmand’

OTHER DOCUMENTARIES

w “Respiration” began when Matt Ortlieb was impressed by monthly shows at Mac’s Bar. “The lyrical content was strong; it was kind of positive.” His film (10 p.m. Friday) will be followed by music. w The Michigan Documentary Showcase (12:30 p.m. Sunday) has “Death of an Iman,” “The Green Mitten” (medical marijuana) and “Publicly Defended,” attacking Michigan’s public-defender system.

‘Prayers for Peace’

‘The Bird Upstairs’

OTHER ANIMATION

In Saturday’s student-film package, animated films include “The Bird Upstairs” and the enjoyable “Cankered and Cursed.”

SCRIPTED FEATURE

“Answer This,” 5 p.m. Sunday, 2500 S. Washington Ave. Christopher Farah has plenty of time to master Ann Arbor. He grew up there, the son of a dentist, and stayed for a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in Middle Eastern studies. He savored the city and Ralph Williams, who taught the Bible as literature. That spurred his script: “I was writing about a professor. As soon as I thought of Professor Williams, it just all came together.” Friends and family financed the lush-looking film; his brother Mike — president of production at the Funny or Die site — produced. Williams plays a professor, with Christopher Gorham (“Covert Affairs”) as his son, a trivia zealot; Nelson Franklin, Chris Parnell and Arielle Kebbel co-star. Scenes ranged from bars (Ashley’s, Eight Ball) to Michigan Stadium. In Los Angeles, Farah said, “you’ll see filming everywhere and people are complacent. In Michigan, there was excitement.”

ANIMATED “Prayers for Peace,” 8:30 p.m. Friday, before “Shepherds of Helmand.” Dustin Grella creates pastel drawings on a slate chalkboard, then turns them into stop-motion animation. The result is gorgeous and painstaking. One subject was worthy of this attention: In New York City, he found markers for each American killed in Iraq, including his younger brother. Grella began a 17-month project, including four months of intense drawing to create a 7 minute, 38-second gem.

“Shepherds of Helmand,” 8:30 p.m. Friday Soldiers used to preserve war memories via scribbled notes. Now? “They have flip phones and helmet-cams,” Gary Mortenson said. “Afterward, they study them on their laptops.” That was a key part of his film about Oregon National Guardsmen. He blended their footage, their memories and the work of embedded photographer Charles Eckert. Mortenson focused on six men; each had volunteered for Afghanistan duty, most had won bronze stars. “A lot of it, they were relating for the first time. All six of these guys had changed profoundly.”

Lansing metal festival brings together Michigan bands Anne Erickson | NOISE

In just five years, Lansing’s Ogrefest has gone from a buzzed-about underground metal show to something much bigger. This year’s show is Saturday at Mac’s, and the line-up includes 20 metal outfits — many from Michigan. “It’s very humbling to see something that was once just an idea in your head grow into something that bands and fans from around the state look forward to every year,” said David Peterman, founder and creator of the fest and guitarist and vocalist in Lansing-based heavy metal band Satyrasis. Peterman chatted with NOISE about the festival. NOISE: How has this fest evolved over the years? Peterman: It started out as a one-off show in Howell that I threw together with bands that I knew, and it snowballed from there. The next year, we moved the show to Lansing, brought in a band from Chicago, threw on even more Michigan bands and it started to look like something that could become a yearly thing. NOISE: One thing I appreciate about Ogrefest is that you showcase plenty of Michigan bands. This year, there’s Dagon, High Spirits, Satyrasis, Genocya and more. Peterman: This year is definitely a Michigan year, which is fitting because there were so many out-ofstate bands last year. Even

though last year was a definite success, I think I strayed a little bit from the “By Michigan, For Michigan” attitude that the fest has become synonymous with. So when I set out to book this year, I dug a little deeper to find those Michigan gems that people have yet to hear, or have only just heard about. NOISE: What do you look forward to every year? Peterman: Two things: No. 1 is the Ogrefest Breakfast, which is where the collection of volunteers and I hit up a Lansing breakfast spot, shoot the breeze and plan the day … No. 2 is picking in-between band music ... Ogrefest has a steadfast policy of no metal between songs, so what you hear instead could be R.E.O. Speedwagon, Taylor Dayne, Blake Shelton or Air Supply. This way, when you hear metal again, you appreciate it a whole lot more.

‘We All Fall Down’ BY NIC SHEFF

(LITTLE, BROWN & CO.)

The follow-up to bestseller “Tweak: Growing Up On Methamphetamines,” reenters the narrative of Nic Sheff’s battle with addiction as he attempts to navigate his way through relapse and recovery with all the candor and stark self-assessment that made “Tweak” such a startling read. In an age of ubiquitous celebrity rehab, Sheff is open about his struggles to find a place within 12-step programs and AA meetings, working against people who insist that their way to sobriety is the only way, to finally find a sense of peace that he has forged for himself. I found it refreshing that someone stood up to say “These programs aren’t working for me.” After many attempts to negotiate with his addictions, Sheff finally finds all the right puzzle pieces to attain a hard-won sobriety, which he has maintained for over two years. Like his first memoir, this will serve as a source of inspiration to people struggling with addiction, as well as those trying to support them.

‘Swatches’ by Anna Motz

Michigan State University students were given a design challenge: create a dress worthy of the red carpet. The catch? It had to be green. The gowns didn’t have to be Spartan green, but as environmentally friendly as possible. Assistant professor Theresa Winge created a rubric to measure how sustainable the students’ dresses were. They were asked to research sustainable design and then recycle, upcycle or repurpose materials. “The students have walked away with an understanding of what’s sustainable, what’s green washing, Winge said. “It’s great to hear them now in the studios talk about the fabric they’re using (and) how much they’ve wasted.” Senior Leigh Gervasi knew

what her eco-friendly gown would look like as soon as she heard the assignment. “You see a lot of paper dresses but I really wanted to incorporate the (book) covers and make it sort of evil looking,” Gervasi said. The product of her work is on display with 15 other sustainable gowns in the MSU Museum’s Heritage Gallery as part of the re:Dress exhibit. The exhibit is accessible to the public during museum hours from April 17 until July 1. The exhibit features sustainability stories of how students made each aspect of creating the dress as green as possible. Gervasi found the old books in her grandmother’s basement and garage sales, and then set to work constructing a gown. The corset top was made from the hard covers, held together with old cupboard hinges. The waistband was made of woven book jackets, and the skirt of origami folded pages. “It was more like wood shop than something I would do in any of my classes, which was so fun

Generally speaking, all those multi-film sets with lurid titles like “Grindhouse Wasteland!” or “Horror Rises Collection!” are filled with subpar movies (even by trash cinema standards) and zero special features, making them a waste of time and money. In steps Something Weird Video with “Drive-In Classics,” a collection of seven top-shelf, well, drive-in classics ranging from the southern fried, bloody horror of “Two Thousand Maniacs” to the rural, boggy and exploitive charms of “Swamp Girl.” The best part of the collection is that, though all previously available titles, some are individually out-ofprint and this set repackages them wholesale, including Something Weird’s legendarily generous supplementals. You walk away with hours of featurettes, poster galleries and trailers. Oh, so many wonderful trailers. I am normally a staunch supporter of individual discs, but “Drive-In Classics” is a must-have assortment of B-movie oddities.

is pretty chill. The game goes by the honor code — no looking up the answer on cellphones, which is difficult to track when people are checking their email and sending texts throughout the course of the night. The game features six categories: Video games, language, history, sports and movies were all up for grabs during my two visits. Two categories are alloted for doubling of points, and one category can be tripled. If there’s a strategy to winning, I haven’t figured it out. I’d imagine having people whose strength

in knowledge in different areas might be an advantage. For example, we had someone who minored in history. And the more heads that are put together usually put up the better points. My first week there, we didn’t do so well, but we did have just three people. Second week, we tied for third place — good for a six-pack of beer. Split six ways. And Mario’s name in the original Donkey Kong? Jumpman. Know of a bar we can feature? Email egim@lsj.com.

I have friends who are trivia enthusiasts. No, not the types who sit at the computer and try out for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Jeopardy! and the like, but those who spend upward of three hours at a bar, where they eat, drink and be merry while putting their minds to the test. (No scientific evidence if alcohol helps trigger information stored in the brain.) The latter sounds a lot more fun so we headed out to Michigan Brewing Company (or MBC) in Lansing, where trivia takes over the bar starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. I already knew I wouldn’t be the best player out there — I’m not much of a keeper of useless information about what Mario’s name was in the original Donkey Kong (real question) or who the team doctor was on the 1980 Super Bowl team (not a real question, but I’m sure someone knows the answer). But I wanted to check it out, and I had to know the answers to a few questions, right? One section of MBC’s dining area is solely for trivia, and the other side — the bar side — is for other patrons. I could definitely tell some of these teams were regulars. In fact, during our second trip for trivia, we couldn’t even get a table on the trivia side at first. The waitress told us she was sure this one big group would leave soon because they had already been there for more than an hour so they probably weren’t in it for the trivia. Boy, was she wrong. While there were a few teams with older members, much of the participants seem to be in their mid-to-late 20s or early 30s. My friends are used to playing trivia run by a company, but at MBC, it’s a one-man show, which I already prefer. The game is laid back, and the host

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays through Saturdays, noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. Hook-up factor: Medium-high on trivia night. It’s mostly people in their 20s or early 30s. Dress code: T-shirt and jeans. But you won’t be out of place with dress clothes on. MBC attracts the business-attire folks who throw back a beer or two after work. What’s on tap: This is a beer establishment after all, so there’s plenty on tap to suit your taste like The Vixen, Red Rabbit or Spring Fling (my pick). I prefer getting a sampler — 4 ounces of brew for $1. If you get four, that’s like getting 16 ounces for $4. On trivia night, you’re better off getting a pint, which is $1 off. Specials: Best day is Mondays, when six-packs are $2 off, 12-packs are $4 off and cases are $8 off.The best part is being able to mix and match your beer.
