JYoung the General
JYoung the General knows good hip-hop music is more than catchy beats and clever rhymes. It involves smart, carefully placed social commentary — lyrics that get you to move in the club, but also make you think differently about the world around you. On “Black History Year: Installment Two,” the Lansing-based rapper does just that — brings together sociopolitical, very aware commentary with hot, steady, flowing beats. The combo is simply dynamite. The album, which was released as a free download this week, is an extension of JYoung’s personal experiences. “My music is an extension of the things I learn,” JYoung says. “After so long rapping about the experiences of my adolescence, I knew that speaking on the things

THE SCENE
Agnes and I visited Thai Princess for dinner, and our friend Erin joined us. The decor is quite striking. Erin was more impressed than we were because she was the only one who knew the restaurant’s previous life — Scalawags Whitefish & Chips. She noted how the restaurant was completely revamped, leaving her no reminder of what it used to be. Two long, leather booths are situated against each side of the restaurant — complete with pillows — and big, comfortable leather-back chairs

The popular Pad Thai ($8.99) is a dish of sauteed rice noodles with egg, tofu, bean sprouts, peanut and scallions, with your choice of chicken, beef, pork, vegetables or tofu. are set on the opposite sides of the booth. Lighted orchids on the wall also caught our attention. It’s small without feeling suffocating.
THE FOOD
The menu is a long selection of appetizers, salads, curry, fried rice, stir fry and more. Sixteen lunch combinations top off at $7.99. A visit to a Thai restaurant isn’t complete without Pad Thai, so we decided to split that dish ($8.99, chicken)
and a Thai Princess special, mango delight with shrimp ($13.99). The mango delight came with about eight pieces of fried shrimp, mango chunks and sliced tomatoes in sweet and sour sauce and served on a bed of lettuce. It’s not necessarily an entree, which we didn’t know before ordering it, but it was quite good. It had the right balance of sweet and savory. We noted how the bold, vibrant colors of the dish made
it look appetizing. We asked for a mild spice level for the Pad Thai. Even so, we experienced a slow, rising heat. It wasn’t too hot to handle but offered enough to spice it up. The noodles were cooked perfectly (some places tend to get mushy), and the value was good for the price.
THE DAMAGE
$24.36 (including tax, but not tip)
NEXT TIME
Erin let us have a bite of her Pad See Ew (also Blackened Noodle, $8.99), and it was better than both of our dishes. It’s sauteed flat rice noodles with egg and Chinese broccoli. It’s your basic stir fry with soy sauce but it packed a lot of flavor.

Tucked away in a small plaza in Okemos is Thai Princess, which calls itself the “same old Zabb Thai in Manhattan, Queens and Astoria in New York” and opened late last year. I don’t know what that actually means, but it has to be something great because while small in capacity, it offers the best overall experience of a Thai restaurant in the area.

Black. Man.” Angus. The show in the Old Town Temple building on April 22 is open to ages 18 and older. Tickets start at $15 and the event includes drinks from Michigan Brewing Company. “What we were looking for this year was some hands-on service and to make sure that our giving stayed very local,” said Earth Day organizer Erin Slayter. “By supporting Lunch with a Purpose, it means we’re getting to support such a wide variety of other nonprofits.” The rest of the Earth Day events scheduled will involve residents getting their hands dirty. Friday and Saturday during the day volunteers will take part in the Old Town Spring Scrub. The scrub will include riverbank, flowerbed, garden and parking lot clean up around the neighborhood. Anyone who comes out to help or to recycle used batteries will receive a free Michigan White Pine seedling. On Saturday, members of Big Brothers Big Sisters will also paint plywood panels of Earth Day inspired artwork designed by Chris VanWyck. For details on the comedy show or to take part in the volunteer activities, visit www.earthdaylansing.com. For Earth Day events in Lansing, go to www.lsj.com/ earthday.

Mother Nature didn’t get the memo, but that didn’t stop volunteers from kicking off spring on a recent Saturday. Newly trained green thumbs from the Garden Leaders program ignored the dreary skies and drizzle to build a community garden for residents of the Edgewood Village apartment complex in East Lansing. “We’re into the thick of it,” said Anne Rauscher, director of the Garden Project, which is affiliated with the Greater Lansing Food Bank. “About the next eight weeks will be the busiest for us. We’re just trying to help folks get their gardens up and going and ready for the season.” About 65 people completed the Garden Leaders training program this year. It’s one of the myriad ways The Garden Project helps grow community projects. Rauscher has worked with community gardens and green spaces for about 15 years and said there’s a new momentum building. In 2008, only a few groups approached The Garden Project for help starting gardens. Numbers have been on a steady increase since then. “We just saw a huge rise,” she said. “Last year was a banner year — 29 new garden projects started.” Rauscher credits First Lady Michelle Obama’s garden at the White House, the popularity of writers like Michael Pollan and documentaries like “Food Inc.” for the increased interest in gardening on a national level.

It was pretty exciting. It doesn’t sound like it, talking about dirt for a couple of hours, but it’s actually really informative.” Galang said it’s important to her that volunteers of all ages can count on learning something new when they enter the GardenHouse. The GardenHouse just received grant funding for a project that will make its gardens available to even more members of the community. Volunteers are building raised beds that will offer increased accessibility for senior citizens and gardeners in wheelchairs. “I think it’s important that educational programming is across the board,” Galang said. “It’s not for one set of people over another. It’s nice that we have a variety of ages that come in here. That’s been the most awesome part.”

Pick a sunny, well drained spot to grow veggies. Healthy lawn is a good sign the soil is healthy, too. If in doubt about the history of your site, consider a test for lead or other toxins. If you’re going from grass to garden, either remove the top layer of sod (at right), smother the grass with a thick layer of compost, or chop and mix the grass into the soil with a shovel or roto-tiller. If you choose the last option, you’ll want to rake out clumps of grass roots before planting. If a handful of soil clumps instead of crumbling, it’s still too wet for a roto-tiller. Wait for soil to dry or break out the shovel.

Carrie Burns entered Michigan State University intending to prepare for a career in health care, but decided after getting her hands dirty in a few gardens that she was more interested in preventative health. “I started getting interested in nutrition and realizing that what people ate played a big role in how healthy they were throughout their life,” Burns said. The 24-year-old’s interest in gardening and nutrition led her to become an AmeriCorps volunteer after graduation, and she now serves as urban gardens coordinator for the South Lansing Community Development Association. Burns is busy starting two new community gardens and leading the expansion of the youth garden. Many of the residents taking part in the community garden come from low-income households, and Burns is passionate about helping get fresh food onto their tables. If the harvest is bountiful enough, she’ll encourage the gardeners to take their excesses to the neighborhood’s farm market. “I’d like to see people take a little more ownership in their health based on what they eat,” Burns said. Burns also leads youth programming that will continue through the summer, with students getting their first taste of gardening in weekly classes. “It’s really exciting to see,” Burns said. “Some of the kids tasted honey for the first time. They’re excited about planting seeds.” Burns said she’s learning as much about Lansing as she is about gardening. “I really had no idea what was in South Lansing,” she said. “There are so many parks there. I just had no idea any of this stuff was there. As a student at MSU, I rarely even came to downtown Lansing, so just discovering all the things that Lansing has to offer is very new to me.”
If you’re new to gardening, check out gardening classes and workshops at www.LetsGardenLansing.org (most events are free from local non-profit groups).
4. WEED ’EM, SEED ’EM...
2. HEALTHY SOIL = HAPPY GARDEN
Add well-aged composted manure (from garden stores or local farms and stables) and any other organic matter you can get your hands on. Leaves, grass clippings, straw and well-rotted food scraps become the compost that your garden depends on for nutrients. Some materials like woodchips or sawdust may leech nitrogen from your soil; consider a nutirent test (available from MSU and others) to help fine-tune your organic additions.
Remove as many weeds as possible before planting. Plant seeds or transplants according to the needs of each vegetable. Pay careful attention to whether it grows best in cool or warm weather. Compact the soil over and around seeds and transplants, but don’t make it too dense.
3. CULTIVATE YOUR PASSION
Cultivating the soil (above) means working it to a finer texture, removing weeds, and forming it to a useful shape. The finer the texture or tilth of your soil, the more air and root space it can offer your plants. Mounding soil into beds helps it warm faster. Prepare your soil so it feels good to run your hand through it.
5. ...WET ’EM AND GET ’EM!
Keep freshly planted seeds and transplants consistently moist. Once plants are well established, a few deep waterings are better than frequent light watering — roots will be trained to go deeper and better handle stress. Without enough water, plants can’t get all the available nutrients in the soil. But be aware: more than an inch of water can cause problems. If you’re watering from a hose or sprinkler, you can put an empty container in the garden and stop when water is one inch deep in the container.

Some of the best brainstorming happens across a picnic table. That’s where AmeriCorps volunteer Bekah Galang and a group of dedicated East Side residents come together to create new projects for the always expanding Hunter Park GardenHouse. “I could never run this much space by myself,” Galang said. “We have a huge volunteer (base).” The GardenHouse is integrated with programming at the Allen Neighborhood Center. The beds inside the greenhouse are used year round, and outdoor beds are being prepped now for the summer. Consultants from the Student Organic Farm at Michigan State University help plan the planting. “I think it’s really important that all people are educated about where their food comes from and how their food gets grown,” Galang said. “That’s what we’re doing on a daily basis is teaching. We make sure that our volunteers know what they’re picking out of the ground.” The GardenHouse is a home for gardeners of all ages, including Youth Service Corps and a new day camp for kids that will run five days a week this summer. Adult gardening classes and workshops are hosted two Saturdays a month, with a perpetual stream of programming interspersed throughout the seasons. “(Classes) can range anywhere from sauerkraut making to starting seeds,” Galang said. “We just had one on soil.

“I also think locally it’s about folks being creative about their budgets and their grocery budget,” Rauscher said. Donation gardens — which give food grown to local food banks — are a large part of the uptick in local community gardens, too. “(That) might be about people recognizing ‘We’re in a tough situation here, I might not be able to give a lot of money, but maybe I can give up my time and my talents,’” Rauscher said. Keeping up with the growing interest has meant expanding the The Garden Project’s goals. “It’s been thinking about how we can be a good facilitator and a good hub for these activities and also help them grow,” Rauscher said. That’s where the Garden Leaders project comes in. The Garden Project will leave the reins of the new Edgewood Village garden in the hands of trained community volunteers from the program and an MSU graduate student who will help integrate the garden in to programming for children all summer long. “It’s been fantastic to see all the enthusiasm,” Rauscher said. “It will be so neat to come back in a few months and see it green and productive and know that folks are out here enjoying the space.”

Oh, sweet salvation. People might forget we have a professional basketball team, but they’ll never forget HockeyTown. For the first time since 2001, our guys were selected for a real, honest-togoodness, nationally televised Monday Night Football game. It’ll be an in-division rivalry game against the Chicago Bears; a rematch of the heartbreaking early-season loss from 2010. While I still harbor deep, deep resentment for the league and the fiasco that is the collective bargaining agreement battle, this MNF game gives me hope about at least one aspect of professional football. Start the chant now: Lions in 2012!

Secondhand Serenade’s John Vesely never thought he’d be topping the charts because he always thought of music as a hobby. Sure, he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area with musical parents (his dad was a professionally jazz musician), but music was something he did just for fun. “I sang in my car a lot when I was younger,” he laughs. “I’ve been in bands ever since I was 12 years old, but it was more for leisure than anything else.” And yet, Vesely eventually found himself reaching No. 7 on Billboard’s pop chart with “Fall For You.” Vesely, a solo musician who performs under the stage name Secondhand Serenade, has built quite a following in Lansing, playing show by show. Lansing-based metal band All Ends Black releases its first demo, simply called “Demo,” at Blackened Moon Concert Hall on Saturday. The release is a culmination of months of work, recording the CD in Lansing and working with local sound engineer Matt Pople to get the mix just right. “This our first CD together so this is a big step for us,” frontman Adam Ray said. “Getting a good-sounding disc out to the public to hear what we are all about was important to us.” The band — Ray, Chris Bauman (guitars), Doug Horstman (guitar) and Damien Streiff (drums) — makes original, heavy-hitting metal tracks along the lines of Machine Head or Mudvayne. They’re already on board for a second full-length, too — due out by year’s end. • All Ends Black CD release show with All Ends Black, 1913 Massacre, Gomorrahizer, To kill a Mockingbird, more • Doors 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 23 • Blackened Moon Concert Hall, 3208 S. EARTH DAY PAYS ECO(NOMIC)-DIVIDENDS Who knew Mother Nature was so thrifty? Friday, April 22, is Earth Day, and along with a renewed appreciation for the planet, the annual environmental awareness day brings a range of eco-deals and freebies. Unless otherwise noted, specials are good just on Friday: • Target stores are giving away a million reusable bags (made from 100 percent recyclable Tyvek). No purchase necessary, one per customer, while supplies last, but get there early. Most stores ran out within a few hours last year. • Bring your own reusable mug to any participating Starbuck’s, and get a brewed coffee or tea on the house. • Bring six empty plastic bags into any Disney Store, and you’ll get a free tote bag.
Target is giving away 1 million reusable bags Friday in honor of Earth Day. (One per customer, while supplies last.) • Don’t toss out that shampoo bottle. Bring your empty toiletry tubes and containers (any brand) to any Origins departmentstore counter or Origins store, and you’ll get free samples in return. The company will recycle all
returned packaging. (Find locations at Origins.com. This promotion is ongoing.) • Return any six empty MAC containers to a MAC counter or through MacCosmetics.com for a free lipstick of your choice. (Click on the “Giving Back” link for more information. This promotion is ongoing.)
• YesTo.com is offering 25 percent off its toiletries and body products. Make purchases though Saturday, and enter code “EARTH” at checkout, to get the discount. • Bring 10 used pens, markers or mechanical pencils to Office Depot anytime through Saturday, and get a coupon for 50 percent off a new Sharpie, Expo or PaperMate product. (The used writing instruments will be recycled into new products such as trash cans and desk organizers.) • Through April 30, ScholasticStore.com is giving an extra 20 percent off on purchases. Use the code “EARTH20” when you check out. • If you’ve been planning to switch to energy-efficient light bulbs but are stumped
by which bulb goes where, a new, free app can help. Light Bulb Finder offers recommendations for each lighting fixture and location in your home and calculates whether your energy savings will cover the cost of the bulb. You can purchase bulbs directly through the app or at suggested local retailers. Download it on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch at the iTunes app store. For Android phones, visit the Google Android Market. • The National Park Service is waiving entrance fees this week, so visitors can enjoy all 392 national parks for free through Sunday. • Remind your friends to show Mama Earth the love with free Earth Day e-cards at Americangreetings.com and 123Greetings.com

DESTRESS BY PRACTICING THE BEST YOGA FOR YOU Jennifer Aniston’s perpetually toned bod or a coworker’s serenity during stressful times have convinced you to give yoga a try, here’s a primer to help pick the right style for you. This cheat sheet from the May issue of Women’s Health demystifies the most popular mat methods so you can choose the one that perfectly fits your health and fitness goals.
• Bikram. For a cardio-style endorphin rush, try Bikram yoga. Pack water and a towel — most Bikram studios have a tropical climate, with temperatures around 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 40 percent humidity. The heat warms up the body, making your muscles more flexible so they can stretch with less risk of injury. • Restorative. Reduce stress levels with restorative yoga. Props such as bolsters, blankets and blocks support your body so you can feel a deep release, poses are often held for 15 minutes and snoozing is completely couth. Letting go physically encourages the mind to do the same. • Vinyasa Flow. If you’re trying to lose weight, try vinyasa flow yoga. Because each vinyasa flow class is different, your muscles will constantly be challenged in new ways, which burns extra calories.

Jamie Woon M I RR O RWR I T I N G (DIGITAL ONLY)
It seems to be the norm for producers and D.J.s from the U.K. to have a full suite of technical wizardry and a penchant for stuttering beats, while also having heat-seeking missiles for voices. And, with his debut “Mirrorwriting,” Jamie Woon certainly matches the description. With an eye toward the alternative R&B chart (that exists, right?), Woon does the unthinkable; he melds dubstep-style production with blue-eyed soul that would make Robin Thicke blush. That he pulls it off with a late-night vibe that practically guarantees dimming lights is something of a minor miracle. The-Dream’s avant beats are the closest comparison, but Woon goes minimal, implementing live looping and gentler lyrics that give him a sensuality far less overt than Usher but more potent. This is late night, backto-mine music in the best possible way. “Mirrorwriting” is contemporary, electronic soul for those who don’t want to be bludgeoned with someone else’s hamfisted version of ‘sexy’.

I really know it’s spring when Samuel Adams makes its annual Longshot sixpack available. The Longshot series features three winners of the brewery’s annual homebrew contest — two from the general public and one from a Samuel Adams employee. Three beers in one sitting called for some sampling help, and homebrewers Mike Champion and Dave Verhage were more than willing to lend a throat. The most impressive beer of the bunch was Honey B’s Lavender Ale, from brewery employee Caitlin DeClercq. Brewing with herbs and spices is a tricky proposition as their flavor may intensify and become overpowering while conditioning. The amount of lavender petals in DeClercq’s ale was just right, adding a unique floral flavor to an already-tasty ale. The use of honey gave the ale’s body a light character yet it was creamy and maintained a solid body and mouthfeel. Mike and Dave said they would drink it in the future.
T O DD H A EF ER beerman@postcrescent.com
The other two beers in the series were not as thrilling, however. The Blackened Hops (by Rodney Kibzey) and Friar Hop (Richard Roper) ales are well-made beers. I especially enjoyed the hop aroma from the Blackened Hops, and its chocolate and roasted qualities were not drowned out. But after reading the Samuel Adams’ press release on how the winners were chosen for originality and pushing boundaries, I felt let down. The Blackened Hops is the umpteenth black India pale ale I’ve come across the past year, so the thrill of adding dark roasted malt to an India pale ale is long gone. Ditto for making a Belgian-style ale and throwing excessive hops into it. Simply increasing the hops does not show imagination — it’s one of the first things novice homebrewers do, heady with the thrill of being in control of their own beers.
Todd Haefer writes about beer for Gannett. Some of the beers may have limited availability. Check brewers’ websites.

‘Inferno’ (Special edition) BLUE UNDER GR OUND (106 MIN, NOT RATED)
“Inferno,” Argento’s macabre tale of a New York building inhabited by one of the mythical Three Mothers (first met in his masterpiece “Suspiria”), is possibly the director’s greatest exercise in style and visual atmosphere. Narratives are never foremost in Argento’s mind, but they are practically nonexistent in “Inferno,” and coupled with the comparatively pared-down setting and tone, the film slightly suffers. Blue Underground offers genre fans the chance to see “Inferno” in a new, fairly lavish transfer. Argento’s painterly eye is all the more evident, with rich, deep reds and blacks evident throughout, highlighting what a fantastic to-look-at film it is. Not essential in the way “Suspiria” or “Deep Red” are but still visually arresting as only Italian horror can be, “Inferno” will confound the typical viewer but for those with a penchant for operatic violence and twisted logic, it is a must-see.
