Bite Me: A Love Story

The newest novel by master humorist Christopher Moore, one of my favorites, released Tuesday. Moore has followed up his last release — “Fool,” an uber-bawdy, farcical retelling of King Lear — with the third novel in his vampire love series. Breaking it down to its simplest (and least plotspoiling) of terms, in the first book, “Bloodsucking Fiends,” Tommy falls in love with the beautiful vampire Jody. In the sequel “You Suck!,” Tommy comes to grips after Jody turns him into a vampire. In the newest book, the story is mostly told through the hilarious voice of Abby Normal, the couple’s sidekick goth chick, which left me both in giggly tears and wondering how a middle-aged man could so perfectly channel the voice of a teenage girl in thigh-high Skankenstein boots. Add to the excellent narrative voice a plot that centers on a slovenly vampire cat and his horde of whiskered minions, and I’m telling ya, you got a winner.

Stationary Set back to roots The guys of alternative rock band The Stationary Set may be based in Brooklyn, N.Y. But they’ll never forget their roots. Three-fourths of the band’s line-up grew up in East Lansing and relocated to Brooklyn shortly after the band’s inception. So when the idea came about to have the band play a Lansing stop on their current U.S. tour, it was a no-brainer. “We love coming back home to play,” guitarist and keyboard player Josh Hoisington said. “Before The Stationary Set, we played in other bands in East Lansing like thefarewelldrive, The Giveaway and The Minor Fall, and we have fond memories of playing Mac’s and the Temple Club, rest in peace. “It’s important to keep yourself present in this industry, and of all the stops on tour, this one is super exciting.” Hoisington, Andrew Lutes (lead vocals), Gabriel Kubitz (bass), Josh Davis (guitar and keyboard) and Logan Baldwin (drums) played a crazy-exciting gig just a few days ago: South by Southwest, the annual music, film and interactive festival in Austin, Texas. Since then, I’ve been to MBC for a couple of Mid-Michigan Tweet-ups, and a friend’s Happy Hour Club. Both of these groups are fairly large, anywhere between 20-50 people depending on the night. Each time, the waitstaff was more than prepared to handle the rush, and wait times were minimal for a crowd that size. It seems they have a good handle on things now. The only thing they sell, alcohol wise, is MBC crafted beer, and new this month, MBC Barley Wine. With 18 beers on tap, and alcohol content ranging from Kid Rock’s Badass Beer (4.6 percent) to the Russian Imperial Stout (11.5 percent), there are plenty of flavors to choose from. Mustard Plug plays ska music, the type that meshes horns and guitars into a sort of overcharged, party-happy rock sound. It’s a style that’s far too good to be ignored. The Grand Rapids-based group has played at The House of Blues in Chicago, Whiskey A-Go-Go in Los Angeles and has albums out on punk label Hopeless. The group broke out in the ’90s, and they’re still hot. Band members keep plenty busy between side projects (bass player Rick Johnson produced the new album from Lansing-based indie rock band Cheap Girls) and gigs. Johnson, singer Dave Kirchgessner (who graduated from Michigan State University in ’91), guitarist Colin Clive, bass player Rick Johnson, drummer Nate Cohn, trombone player Jim Hofer and trumpet player Brandon Jenison play Mac’s Bar on Sunday. The station produces five shows for a total of nine hours of original content each day. With the exception of a gig at NPR, Van Camp said he wouldn’t trade the Internet radio station for a traditional outlet. “It feels more real than a lot of radio,” he said. “I don’t really want to work for a regular radio station. I don’t think that’s the future.” Hogan and Gibbons travel in mostly separate social circles, and that’s reflected in the show’s content. Hogan recruited the guests for this week’s show and led the conversation with a local graphic art-

Electric motors benefit from huge low-end torque, so they’re actually very fast indeed off the line. That makes even some of the little econo-boxes capable of blowing off complacent Camaros and Mustangs. 2. Electric vehicles will be expensive. This is a half-truth, since the purchase price will indeed be higher than you’re used to paying. Expect $35,000 to $40,000 for entry-level cars the size of a Subaru Forester. But, there’s a $7,500 federal tax credit for the purchase of battery cars, and a second credit of up to $2,000 that will pay up to 50 percent of your home charger installation. 3. Charging electric vehicles will be a hassle. Carmakers and charging companies are lobbying for, and will probably get, streamlined rules for home wiring, which should reduce installation times from a month to 24 hours. Your home charger (about $2,000 installed) is likely to be addressable like the cable box.
Spartan men riding high into St. Louis on Lucious three-pointer I was looking forward to writing (for the second year in a row) about our two Spartan basketball teams making the Sweet 16 ... but only half that story is true this time around. Despite the women’s early exit, the Spartan Nation is still on a hoops high after the opening weekend with the men’s team — and that’s what we’ll focus on. Regardless, the wave of disbelief and awe that swept across East Lansing after Korie Lucious sunk a buzzer-beating 3 to

Now, I’m not going to sugarcoat this: we are hobbling into this weekend. Allen and Roe are still not at 100 percent, and Kalin Lucas will have to be a floor general — from the bench. Things are not in their ideal state at the moment. But what if we’re better because of the adversity? There was an undeniable fire in this team last weekend, and I think it had a lot to do with a strong ‘fight or flight’ instinct. Lucas goes down and things could have gone one of two ways: and we’re lucky to have gotten out of Spokane the way we did. Coach Izzo will have this team ridiculously prepared for UNI ... and you should be prepared, too. We’ve come to expect the unexpected from MSU in the tournament, and this year is no exception. And when toe-eating (!), mutant wolfman henchman (!!) Alph is introduced in a top hat (!!!), you know you’re in for something special. An uneven but wildly entertaining slice of Ozploitation.

If there’s a ‘rock star’ in the classical music realm, it’s Giora Schmidt. The 27-year-old violinist is in demand, with a résumé that includes gigs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Ravinia Rising Stars series and more, plus studies at the Julliard School. Schmidt plays with passion, style, dead-on technique and sports chops that would make any instrumentalist green with envy. Just listen to the rich tone and fervent playing on his 2007 solo release, “Vocalise,” and you’ll get it. Schmidt joins the Lansing Symphony Orchestra for a performance of the Barber Concerto for Violin & Orchestra on Saturday. He spoke with

is something that’s going to be a lifelong occupation or a hobby. My parents felt I had what it took, and I didn’t get that. This life involves a lot of competitions and auditions, and I ended up going to Julliard, which is obviously a great place. But it’s also incredibly demanding as far as what they require to just step in the door. So, with all of that on my mind, there was a time when I said, “I’m quitting.” My parents said, “All right, fine. But if you love it, you’ll come back.” And I did. I didn’t know what else I was going to do with my day (laughing). NOISE: That’s great! What really drew you back to music? Schmidt: Music is a great friend. Sometimes your friends let you down and people disappoint you, but music is one of those disciplines where what you put in is what you get out. NOISE: Do you look up to any particular classical musicians? Schmidt: I have many role models in classical music, and that even crosses over to jazz. To me, the most important thing is an artist that has an identifiable sound and character. It doesn’t matter if it’s Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington or Ella Fitzgerald

While almost all but the most seasoned veteran purchase “starts,” it really is a simple and satisfying process to grow some of your own plants from seed -even in a very small space in your own home. It is a joyful sight to see the first seedlings pop through the soil and transform into hardy, strong plants ready to brave the out-of-doors.

Requirements: A 4-foot florescent shop light with two bulbs (full spectrum bulbs optional but not necessary) A few 10” x 20” flats with inserts peat pots, again optional but unnecessary) A small table or countertop covered with a plastic sheet Some potting or seed starting soil (you won’t need a lot) Seeds (of course) Total investment can be as little as $10-$15 or less depending on the shop light. Things to know: Seeds are focused! Their entire purpose is to sprout into a living, breathing plant. If they are viable (able to sprout), they pretty much do it on their own with barely an assist from us. Two major pitfalls are over-watering and planting too deep. Other than that, you can have a mini garden in no time! I’ve planted my seeds, now what? Once the seeds sprout, keep the fluorescent light just a few inches above the seedlings so they will not stretch to the light and become “leggy”. If you have a timer used during the holiday season to turn your Christmas lights on and off, use it for regulating the 12 hours of light that most seedlings enjoy. (Truly, the timer part is optional. Most of us are able to plug and unplug fairly consistently and if the lights get left off or on for 24 hours the plants are very forgiving.) With antique production and fuzzy, beyond-dub bass, the debut album from singer/rapper/yoga instructor Gonjasufi (aka Sumach Ecks) won’t win any fidelity awards but its thick, heady world is guaranteed to transport you. A bizarre, erratic album that easily flips the mood from spacey ghost-folk to Madlib-flavored hip-hop, ‘Sufi and a Killer’ is thrilling in how easily it manages those transitions. Creative teacher group ‘giddy’ over community-wide launch Tricia Bobeda | NOISE
The crowd of about 40 people who gathered at the Temple Building on Saturday night may have been vastly outnumbered by the rock concert held there the night before, but the speakers for the Creative Teacher Summit had no trouble filling the 11,600-square-foot building with their enthusiasm. DeWitt High School teachers Jeff Croley and Jason LaFay organized the event. They are founders of the DeWitt Creativity Group (DCG), which combines many of the school’s extracurricular activities that embrace artistic, scientific and entrepreneurial ideas. “We need to be building (from) the grassroots level to transition to the new economy,” LaFay said as he gripped a framed proclamation from the City of Lansing that declared March 20 “Mid-Michigan Creative Teacher Day.” LaFay said even though the proclamation is symbolic, it made him “giddy.” State Rep. Paul Opsommer, R-DeWitt, who attended the event, said he had hoped the Legislature could have conversations about preparing students for the 21st century economy, but they get bogged down dealing with the budget.
“As Ignite Lansing and all the others (did), as it picks up momentum and as it picks up people, it will be a great event.” Thomas Stewart, president and CEO of Common Wealth Enterprises “Don’t wait for government. Seriously — just do it,” Opsommer said. As a local entrepreneur, Thomas Stewart, president and CEO of Common Wealth Enterprises, often participates in events in Lansing and on Michigan State University’s campus aimed at inspiring innovative new businesses. He was impressed to see a group targeting K-12 innovation. “Let’s start at the foundation,” Stewart said. “You can’t expect first events like this to be enormous. I think as Ignite Lansing and all the
others (did), as it picks up momentum and as it picks up people, it will be a great event.” The DCG has hosted film and art festivals, and they’ve recently partnered with Instructional Technology Services to start a business incubator in downtown DeWitt. LaFay spoke about the DCG at Ignite Lansing earlier this month, and will sit on a panel on business incubators on March 26 at The Loft in downtown Lansing. Croley said he hoped the mix of teachers, administrators, students and entrepreneurs who attended would be “walking billboards” so the DeWitt Creativity Group can collaborate with others in the community. And next year, they are hoping the event could bring together more teachers, students and recent graduates sharing stories about their entrepreneurial and artistic work. “Maybe next year we can do something on a much larger and grander scale,” Croley said. “We figured we can’t keep thinking of the vision and talking about the concept. Michigan State University graduate and Okemos native Kyle Rasche makes delicate, optimistic-sounding singer-songwriter fare with Chain of Lakes, his solo project. Catch the intimate show at Scene Metrospace on Saturday, March 27. NOISE caught up with the now Grand Rapids-based Rasche to talk about his musical lineage. NOISE: When did you first start singing and writing songs? Rasche: I’ve always been into music. My dad always had great folk records playing, like Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot and Crosby Stills and Nash. They signed us up for piano lessons, and my sister and I were both in choir early on. Music has always been part of my life; it just took a much more prominent role as I grew up and began to fall in love with it as a creative outlet. NOISE: Did you play in any bands before this solo project? Rasche: The first band I ever played with was when I was 18, called Four_Days. Josh Davis, Josh Hoisington and I comprised the trio. I was actually the drummer. It was cool: three part vocal harmonies, organic percussion … I learned how to play guitar and write songs with those guys. Josh Davis came back to Michigan to track some guitars and ambience for the Chain of Lakes. He and Hoisington are touring now with The Stationary Set out of Brooklyn. We’re all still best pals.
