Funktion full of energy
Funktion spins heavy funk and party music with highenergy, life-of-the-party stage antics. The 7-piece funk band out of Kalamazoo is starting to develop a broad fanbase in the Midwest, thanks in no small fashion to a busy summer touring schedule that took the guys through Michigan and surrounding states. Jump back a few weeks, and the guys were taking their show on a 10-day tour all the way out to Colorado. Black Label Society visits Zakk Wylde understands that writing music, whatever the genre, is an organic process. It’s something you can force, contrive or fake. “It always starts with a riff. The riff will easily dictate the melody, because it just inspires you to start singing something,” he says, chatting one early morning from his home outside of Los Angeles. With a musical backstory that includes playing lead guitar for Ozzy and fronting heavy metal group Black Label Society, it’s no hyperbole to say Wylde is one of the most sought-after guitarists in the world. Black Label Society plays two area shows this weekend: Friday at the Deltaplex Arena in Grand Rapids and Sunday at the Fillmore in Detroit. Are you two still tight? Wylde: Absolutely. Without Ozzy, there’d be no Zakk Wylde. There’d be no Black Label. I wouldn’t have the Bunker studio. debuting No. 4 on Billboard. You recorded this in your new home studio, The Bunker. Wylde: Yeah, it’s awesome. When you think about it, with all the money you end up spending, it’s worth it. I remember telling Ozzy when he put up a studio, “Ozzy, can you imagine how much money you must have spent from the first Black Sabbath album until now on recording?”… With Pro Tools, people can record at their homes and actually put out album-quality stuff. NOISE: So many musicians look up to you. Flattering? Wylde: Well, my friends always said, “Zakk, stick around long enough, and they’ll have no choice but to actually like you.” [Laughs] I’m like, “Thanks, guys.” So, between all the moral support I get from my buddies, it’s a miracle I’m still playing. [Laughs] NOISE: How many guitars do you own? Wylde: I probably have over 200 now. I’m doing a book right now, so I’ll know exactly the count I have and the serial numbers. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is the newest place people in the area people are talking about. Every time I drive by the East Lansing burger joint, no matter the time — it’s hopping. After stopping by for lunch recently, it’s easy to see why.

THE SCENE
It’s very clean, very loud (because of the music) and very busy. We were order No. 39 and 20 minutes later they called out order No. 57. It feels like a diner with red and white checkered decor. Walls are lined with press clippings that praise the food and drawings made by kids. Peanuts are complimentary, something to snack on while waiting for your order.
THE FOOD
The menu is basic — burgers, hot dogs and fries. Basically you build your own — there’s more than 250,000 possible ways to make your

The back entrance of the restaurant, which opened earlier this month. burger, or so they say. That’s because of the 15 toppings they offer, ranging from jalapeno peppers to hot sauce. And it’s all free. Burgers come regular (two patties) or little (one patty). You can also make your own veggie sandwich. Laura went with the little bacon cheeseburger ($4.69) and added lettuce and tomatoes. I ordered a kosher-style hot dog ($3.29) with onions. We also shared an order
of regular fries ($2.69), which was plenty for two. All orders come in a brown paper bag, and the food is wrapped in foil. My hot dog was amazing, and next time I’ll probably order two. The bun was soft, and the meat was juicy and had a lot of flavor. The meat was cut down the middle, so the onions, and ketchup and mustard were in between the slices of the meat. Laura also enjoyed her burger. The bacon was
crispy, the lettuce was fresh and the tomatoes were juicy. The fries are made from fresh potatoes (and tasted like it) and cooked in peanut oil, which I thought made the difference.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 2 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into inch strips • 1 tablespoon canola oil • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1/2 cup plain yogurt • 1 tablespoon honey DIRECTIONS • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Toss sweet potatoes with oil in large bowl. Mix brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of the cinnamon, ginger and salt and add to potatoes. Coat well. • Bake 30 minutes or until sweet potatoes are tender and lightly browned. Turn potatoes after 15 minutes. • To complete the dip, mix sour cream, yogurt, honey and remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in small bowl. Serve sweet potatoes with dip. The last time a band I liked tried the ‘revel then reflect’ concept for an album, it was Counting Crows stumbling mightily through “Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings.” An awkward and clunky listen and not one I was eager to revisit. To see the near-infallible James visit similar territory (though as dual EPs combined as one record) caused a moment’s hesitation, but was wholly unfounded. “Morning / Night” is a calculated but rewarding listen, and another triumph. Starting with the comedown of “Morning,” the album crafts sublime and reflective soundscapes, recalling the group’s work with Brian Eno. As the record progresses and ‘Night’ begins, the tempo quickens and the sound is more propulsive, drawing out contemplations of the barely-controlled revelry of the night before. With the band sounding confident and Tim Booth’s vocals gorgeous as ever, “Morning / Night” is a pensive, layered adult pop album, and one of my favorites of the year.

If you’ve ever found yourself at someone else’s family reunion, you have a little taste of what it’s like at Preston’s Bar in Grand Ledge. Everyone is really, really friendly. And they want you to sit right in the middle of them so they can tell you all about themselves and the stories of their legendary exploits. And they want to make you a sandwich. This sort of overwhelming hospitality has apparently been going on since Joseph and Lucy Preston opened their bar in Downtown Grand Ledge in 1914. The Italian immigrants’ business was originally a bar and deli, and though the façade still indicates this is true, the deli now serves as the place where the food for the bar is stored and prepared. When present owners Lanny (grandson of Joseph and Lucy) and Sue Preston purchased the bar in the late 1970s, the opposite had been true. Though the deli remained open, the bar had been closed for about 20 years. Legend has it a drink or two might have still been consumed in the place during that time, but it wasn’t until Lanny’s father talked him into reopening the bar that things became official. The deli/bar flip-flopping, however, is one of the few things that has changed at all over the last 96 years. At present, the bar is evidently a near match to the business all of the Grand Ledge men surrounding me

grew up with. The atmosphere is dim and warm with décor not unlike a busy aunt’s living room. Framed photos, news article, trophies and more clutter nearly every inch of the brick and wood paneled walls. Together they tell the tale of a family that might not be winning any interior decorating awards, but sure has a long-standing place in the community. “I’ve been here for 60 years and it hasn’t changed,” said “Lovey” Preston, a family member and lifelong patron. Set aside softball team sponsorships and St. Patrick’s Day Parade float contest wins, the real sign of the bar’s sense of community came just as those words left Lovey’s mouth and an elderly gentleman burst through the door. “I’m looking for Jerry,” he
said. “Anybody know where Jerry is?” The entire population of the bar leapt to his aid offering when they last saw Jerry and where Jerry could be now. But the old-timey feel of the bar is getting nudged into the present day with Lanny’s son Vic Preston as part-owner and handling the more youth-oriented weekend scene. The bar now has a DJ Thursdays through Saturdays with Water Pong Tournaments — I repeat Water Pong — on Thursdays. The remainder of the weekend? It’s dance party USA. The bar was even voted “Best Place to Dance,” within some geographic location by someone, maybe a newspaper. The Prestons aren’t sure. They are sure about one thing, though: “This is my favorite bar,” said Lanny Preston. And though he was speaking tongue-in-cheek, it seems most of Grand Ledge would agree.

They do have a “group” in Facebook under “Preston’s Bar.” On the horizon: Dancing and waterponging aren’t the only new fangled things going on at Preston’s. Next spring a new patio will be built along the side of the building. Hook-up factor: I think this probably depends a lot on your comfort-level with others knowing your dirty secrets (also known as shame). If you’re cool with everyone you spent last weekend with and will spend next weekend with and probably will run into on Wednesday knowing your business, by all means: Hook right up. History mysteries abound: Like any good story, the various tales of the Preston’s Bar’s nearly 100-year history has clearly been told so many times that the lines between fact and fiction are becoming blurred. While Lovey Preston was recalling that the purchase price on the bar in 1914, was just $300, his family members don’t seem to agree in the slightest. They all agree that the plants in the windows have been alive and well since the beginning. I mean, you can believe them if you want, but ... a centuryold houseplant? Come now.

‘You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know’

Fans of engrossing memoirs will not want to miss this memoir from Michigan author Heather Sellers, a professor at Hope College. At the crux of the book is Sellers’ realization in her late 30s that she has prosopagnosia — also known as face blindness — which leaves her unable to recognize people. Throughout her life she found coping skills — becoming observant of a person’s gait, hair, clothing — to mask what she had assumed was a mental illness that should be kept a secret, but the discovery of her disorder forced her to reevaluate her entire life. That included taking a hard look at her own childhood, which she realized she had rewritten in her mind, to cover the painful tracks left by a mother who was a paranoid schizophrenic and a father who was an alcoholic cross dresser. There’s so much to Sellers’ story that it’s not easily classifiable: part disturbing childhood, part love story, part medical mystery. It is told in a gentle, honest, yet uncompromising voice. A stunning read.

The Mitten Mavens derby squad faced off with the Flint City Derby Girls for its first roller derby bout on Oct. 30. The Flint squad won by a final score of 207 to 102, but league co-founder and team co-captain Kate “TroubleChicken” Gibson said she was proud of the team’s performance. “We’re feeling pretty good about it,” Gibson said. “We’ve only been around since March and they’ve been around for three years. Not too bad, could have been a lot worse.” Gibson invites women interested in trying derby to stop by one of their practices. “We have a loaner pile of extra equipment so they can try it out,” Gibson said.

Bob Zany, comedian, actor, writer and host of “The Zany Report” Tuesdays on the “Bob & Tom” radio show, loves the little things in life, like seeing someone break into laughter after telling a good joke. Or, at least paying off the audience to pretend it was funny. “Bribing the audience before the show works well,” jokes Zany from his Los Angeles home. “I find $5 bills generally work.” “If the audience likes you, they let you get away with things,” he said. “Stage presence and having the confidence to walk out there is important when you’re trying to make a bunch of strangers laugh.” It’s doubtful that Zany, who rolls into the MSU Auditorium Friday with the “Bob & Tom” Comedy AllStars Tour, has to pay off his crowds. If you listen to the “Bob & Tom Show” locally on WJXQ-FM (106.1), you’ve probably laughed out loud at his quirky gags and bits. His “Zany Report” spoof stories in the news and ends with a joke, told in Bing Crosby’s voice. Scoring a regular gig on one of radio’s biggest syndicated morning shows wasn’t easy. Ask Zany, and he’ll say it took time, dedication and hard work. Zany started out in comedy at 15, landing a gig on “The Gong Show.” He went on to be a Los Angeles DJ, and then a national comedian. Regarding the other performers for the “Bob & Tom” Comedy All-Stars Tour tour, they’re all national comedians who appear regularly on “Bob

One of the most demanded DVDs by fright film fans, “Dark Night” earned this distinction not by spinning reels of gore and flesh, but by offering genuinely creepy mood and a sense of supernatural dread, as a madefor-TV movie on a modest budget. No small feat. Bubba, an adult with the mind of a child, is friends with little Marylee, which does not sit well with the town mailman Otis. When Marylee is viciously attacked, Otis and his good ol’ boy cronies are quick to accuse Bubba, form a posse and shoot him down. After escaping imprisonment, Otis and his men celebrate. but strange accidents befall them, and soon it is clear that something or someone wants vengeance, and that there is other justice in the world besides the law. Terrifically paced and acted, “Scarecrow” is an atmospheric gem, and even with its TV origin delivers spooky chills. A must-have for any fan of the suspenseful.
