Brown makes fiddle cool Fiddle player Matt Brown clearly remembers the moment he saw his mug splashed on the cover of “Fiddler Magazine,” a national niche music mag. “They contacted me about writing the article, which was thrilling enough, but I had no idea they were going to put me on the cover,” the instrumentalist said. “So we did the story, it went to press and I got a call from my dad one day when I was on the road. He told me that a box of ‘Fiddler Magazines’ had just arrived at his house, and every single one of them had me on the cover. It was quite a shock!” A good shock, of course. Brown, who plays the Ten Pound Fiddle series Friday, won fame in the national fiddle sphere. Now the Westchester, Penn.-based guy is transcending it. Fans who pick up his latest album, “My Native Home,” find intricate banjo playing, snippy guitar work, layers of fiddle and haunting solo pieces. It’s a

nature of old time music. “I enjoy many styles of music from all around the world, but old-time music speaks to me like nothing else,” he says. That passion spills out on “My Native Home,” which brings out some of Brown’s friends on acoustic bass, fiddle and other instruments. As proud as he is of the CD, Brown’s favorite thing about playing this music is touring and how it makes him feel so connected to people all over the country. “As I travel and share this music, I befriend a great variety of folks who share even more with me,” he says. “I have this ever-growing national network which makes it possible and so rewarding for me to be a touring folk musician.”

sound that’s both inventive and traditional. Brown’s story starts as a 4-year-old picking up the violin. “I studied the Suzuki method, which is a great way to introduce young children to classical music,” he says. “It places a strong emphasis on learning by ear, which is also crucial in playing traditional music, since folk traditions are shared aurally and not by written records.” Even though he studied classical music, Brown found himself surrounded by old-time songs. His dad, a fiddle player who was determined to raise a fiddler of his own, would have band rehearsals in the living room and kept hitting Brown with fiddle music. So, Brown started jamming with local musicians in the Philadelphia area. “As a young musician, I was fully accepted by the adult musicians into their community and welcomed not just as a fellow musicmaker, but also as a social equal,” he says. “By the time I was a teenager, I was leading a square-dance band on the fiddle, and things just continued from there.” He loves the communal

(WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY PRESS)
I was seriously impressed by this novella by Michigan author Laura Kasischke, part of Wayne State University Press’ excellent Made In Michigan Writers Series. The story centers on the fascinating House of David religious colony that sprang up in Benton Harbor in 1903 (perhaps best known for their long-haired baseball team and onsite amusement park). Founded by charismatic preacher Benjamin Purnell, the sect’s beliefs grew out of Christianity, including tenets of relinquishing all possessions, strict vegetarianism, no cutting of hair and celibacy. Despite the claim to celibacy, in 1923 the state of Michigan charged Purnell with a number of counts including religious fraud and statutory rape, backed by the testimony of a number of teenage girls. Kasischke’s novella focuses on the inconsistencies between the pure vision of the sect’s founder and his conduct. Told through the eyes of the women surrounding Purnell, the tone is almost dreamy, and completely enchanting, while the inclusion of various postcard photographs solidifies the story as a slice of Michigan history.

No plot summary necessary for this triumphant, time-traveling trilogy of adventure and fun. In my book, the most fun trilogy of films in existence (sorry, “Star Wars”) and also one of the most captivating orchestral scores (again, sorry “Star Wars”). The films were always visually stunning, but now with their debut on Blu-ray, are a revelation. Crisp, vibrant colors and texture emerge in every scene, reminding you just how good looking these movies are. The soundtrack is presented in 5.1, and Huey Lewis has never sounded better. Beyond the technical enhancements are the supplements, and they are generous. The most impressive of the features is “Tales from the Future,” a multi-disc retrospective that interviews and covers every significant character from the cast and crew. Full of insight, trivia and humor, they are a joy. “Back to the Future” belongs in every film fan’s library, and if you have made the leap to high-definition, this is one series that repays the investment.

On Audrey’s latest EP, “The Flyaway,” the Muskegon band serves up indie power-pop tracks reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie. Song names like, “Chivalry,” and, “I Want You to Stay,” make it pretty clear the guys like writing about all things personal, especially love. In fact, “The Flyaway” comes from the female perspective of a love story; they told the male side on their last EP, “When We Were Young.” Music-wise, you’ll find dreamy, pop-oriented textures and brightly chiming riffs on the release. Michigan-based concert promotions company Fusion Shows presents Audrey’s CD release show Friday at Mac’s Bar with Elliot Street Lunatic, Good Weather For Airstrikes and Joe Hertler also playing. This show is just the beginning for Audrey, seeing as the dudes are set to hit venues in Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Holland and Mount Pleasant through the end of the year. • Audrey (EP release), Elliot Street Lunatic, Good Weather for Airstrikes, Joe Hertler • Doors 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 • Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, 484-6795 • $7 advance tickets at http://fusionshows.com; $10 at the door

‘Back to the Future’ trilogy

Now on Thursdays NOV. 11 – NOV. 17
Frugal challenge photos by Matthew Dae Smith | NOISE
Our trio of shoppers were given $20 and free rein at Goodwill Tricia Bobeda | NOISE
NOISE challenged three local women to put together an outfit for fall that exemplified their sense of style. The catch? They had to shop in a thrift store and spend $20 or less. After mining through the racks of gently used clothing at a Goodwill store in Lansing, here’s what they found.
NICOLE SZYMACZACK
, 30, is a film lover and fashionista. The Lansing resident graduated from Michigan State University and worked as a producer at several TV stations before taking on the role of station manager for LCC TV “The Link”.
HER SHOPPING STRATEGY
“My style is pretty much chic but classy. Sometimes I’ll go crazy and go a little bohemian or something like that, but basically I just try to go with really chic and classic. Also as inexpensive as I can and as different as I can so it doesn’t look like any other store bought stuff that everybody else is wearing.”
Check out a video of the thrifty shoppers at:

ONL I
DRESS
Nicole tried on plenty of pants, skirts and tops, but when she found this dress ($7) that fit like a glove, she used it as the starting point for the rest of her shopping.
VEST
Nicole scoured the racks at Goodwill for a green vest, and found this zippered cargo vest (under $4) to pair with her dress for a bohemian feel.
HAT
Recently returned from her honeymoon in Europe, Nicole couldn’t resist the camel colored felt beret ($2).
SCARF
Nicole loves scarves of all shapes and sizes, and this camel-colored scarf ($2) was the perfect addition to her bohemian outfit.
KAT COOPER
ANDREA KERBUSKI, 24,
is writer, photographer, graduate student and fashion enthusiast. She is an assistant communications officer at Capital Area Michigan Works and an associate photographer with Jason Alten Photography. Her fashion blog can be found at blondebedhead.blogspot.com
HER SHOPPING STRATEGY
“I love preppy J Crew style outfits. One of the things I like is this very very preppy men’s tie, which you could wear as a necklace, as a tie or even as a belt. I love navy blue, so that was a huge (draw).”
SKIRT
|
“My shopping strategy was to find versatile pieces that could mix together. I picked out several skirts including this fabulous leopard print maxi skirt which is something on my to-buy list. I also wanted to look for things that are really hot this season, so camel tones, jackets and belts. I also found an amazing fur coat. This is also really hot this season. I was just trying to pull out things that I’ve looking for anyway and if I can get a good deal on it, get it here.”
Now on Thursdays NOV. 11 – NOV. 17
HER SHOPPING STRATEGY
, 30, works in communications for Michigan State University. She also acts on stage and in commercials, most recently seen in The Farnsworth Invention at Riverwalk Theatre. She cohosted the LansingNext radio show for TalkLansing.net with Daniel J. Hogan.
Andrea said a leopard print maxi skirt has been on her list for a while, and finding it at Goodwill for under $4 was a steal.
BELT
Camel tones are hot this season, and she needed the belt (99 cents) in part to keep the skirt in place (it’s a little too big, and Andrea will likely tailor it a bit).
BLOUSE
Once she found the leopard skirt, she needed to balance it with something that wasn’t as busy as the animal print. She found this black dress shirt (under $4) that provided balance. This bright red suit jacket came with pants in an identical color. But since Kat’s not a woman running for Congress in the 1980s, she opted to separate the pieces and wear just the jacket ($8).
THRIFT STORES
ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY THRIFT STORE • 1020 S. Washington Ave. in Lansing • Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays • Info: (517) 484-5395
SKIRT
Since wearing the red suit pants was a no-go, she tried to find a calmer color to balance her bold jacket. This cream colored skirt (under $4) helped the work attire along.
GOODWILL (LANSING LOCATION) • 5353 W. Saginaw Hwy. in Lansing • Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 12-5 p.m. Sundays • Info: (517) 323-1167
FUR COAT
DRESS SHIRT
This was a splurge. The real and gently used fur coat Andrea spotted in the Goodwill blew her budget ($29) but she couldn’t resist and bought it with her own money.
To keep with the red, white and blue theme, Kat found a powder blue dress shirt (under $4) to finish her outfit.

His solo and collaborative work, stretching back three decades, is at its best, some of the most unusual and transcendent pop music possible. “Small Craft,” his first album in five years, nuzzles comfortably in the middle, engaging but never fully alive. Part ambient, part artsy pop album, “Small Craft” is at its best during the hypnotic soundscapes of the ambient moments (no surprise from someone who named multiple albums “Ambient”). When the pace quickens and something resembling a beat emerges, things get a little dicey, and the consummate forwardthinker actually sounds a little dated. While not a late-career masterpiece, “Small Craft” is challenging enough to satisfy fans but not the best introduction to Eno’s genius.

We stumbled upon Aldaco’s Authentic Mexican Restaurant on Cedar Street on our way to another place to review that ended up being closed. Usually I do a little background research before checking out places, but we went in completely blind. We left feeling pretty satisfied about our last-minute adventure.
THE SCENE
It was fairly busy during lunch time, but we were seated and waited on quickly. The waitress was nice when we sent her away twice because we couldn’t decide on what to order.
THE FOOD
Aldaco’s is known for their buffet, which was available during the time for our visit, but we ordered from the menu instead. We started off with a small order of chips and guacamole ($3.95), which was brought immediately after we placed our order. The guacamole was creamy, mixed with onions and tomatoes and served with
Aldaco’s chips, which were warm and crispy. Since Laura ordered off the lunch menu, it also came with salsa, which I preferred over the guacamole. The salsa had that extra kick I was looking for. I got the quesadilla ($5.95) with chicken ($1 extra) from the appetizer menu. It’s a 14-inch flour tortilla — more than enough for one person. The quesadilla was stuffed with shredded chicken, cheese, onions and green peppers, and fried crisp. Laura had the lunch combo, one each of beef taco, beef burrito and bean tostada.
THE DRINKS
Aldaco’s carries Coca-Cola products; we each had a large drink for $1.75.

Now that East Lansing can catch its collective breath during MSU’s bye week, I’ll take this time to opine on a topic other than Spartan sports. However, it wouldn’t pain anyone for me to reference our 9-1 record and hope the BCS Gods look favorably on us in the coming weeks, would it? Nah. If you spent last Sunday like I did, you watched the Lions lose in overtime to the Jets. The most difficult part of our most recent loss was watching a complete offensive meltdown take place in a matter of moments. Detroit quarterback “Babycake” Stafford was tackled, by the feet, and separated his shoulder — again. (I swear, I’ve never had the inclination to draw an editorial cartoon; but if I did, it’d be Stafford and those shoulders.) Oh, and “Babycake” is just the first nickname that came to mind for our dainty $76 million dollar investment. I’m sure I’ll conjure up something better eventually. If you behaved anything like I did on Sunday during the fourth quarter of that game, you hopefully succeeded in abstaining from hurling the nearest object at the television. I’m actually quite surprised I didn’t damage any of my personal belongings. No amount of yelling or unladylike language seemed to help former Spartan QB Drew Stanton understand the concept of clock management, or how to play the always-challenging game of “Throw and Catch” with Detroit receivers. The beating my couch took thanks to fist-pummeling did nothing to change Coach Jim Schwartz’s play-calling. Complete. Total. Meltdown. This week, Lions fans are in for a real treat, and possibly a win. Detroit travAndi Osters, 28, is a Michigan els to play the
State graduate.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford separated his shoulder in last weekend’s overtime loss to the Jets. He looks to be out of commission for at least the next few weeks, if not the remainder of the season.
A NDI O S T ER S ostersan@gmail.com
Bills in Buffalo — a team whose record (0-8) is a shining testament to their abilities (or lack thereof) this season. Their run defense is ranked 32nd in the league (last), so the bonkers-bananas game plan the Lions employed last week against the Jets (one of the best-run defenses in the country) might work perfectly this week. Buffalo makes it hard for their opponents to lose, and maybe that’s what Detroit needs right now. Stafford looks to be out for at least the next few weeks, if not the remainder of the season. That leaves us snapping to either Shaun Hill, whose left arm is broken — or Drew Stanton, who did very little to help his cause last week. Rumors are swirling about Detroit picking up someone from the UFL to hold the reins — did someone just whisper JEFF GARCIA?! Wouldn’t that just be peachy? My apologies for the tone, but that loss on Sunday sure left a bitter taste in my mouth. The talent is there, the pieces are in place, and the potential is palpable. Now, if only we could get everybody healthy. This weekend, tune in on Sunday to watch the Lions try not to lose, and keep one eye open on Saturday, too. Sparty’s Rose Bowl bid depends heavily on Big Ten play. Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio State all play opponents who could surprise this weekend. Don’t you love football in November?
Though I’d been in Stober’s before (like any other Lansingite, current or former), I’d never sat at the bar. My mistake. While the entire bar is cozy and intimate, the barstools are more comfortable than any piece of furniture I own. The overstuffed red vinyl stools with high, cushy backs made me wonder why I don’t do more work from the bar. I had my computer, a beer, the coziest chair I have ever sat in. What else could I possibly need? I’m pretty sure that’s the idea. Stober’s is such a relaxed cozy place, it’s easy to see why so many people find it hard to leave — and why they keep coming back. “We’ve got weekday regulars, weeknight regulars, weekend regulars, and they’re all different crowds,” said Rene Gustafson, who has tended bar at Stober’s for four years. “We even have regulars who come in based on who’s tending bar.” That’s a lot of loyalty. And while most bars that rely on regulars are pretty quiet places, Stober’s never seems to lack for a hearty crowd. I could hardly find a parking spot at 4:30 p.m. — on a Wednesday.
It’s not just the barstools that are so comfortable. The entire atmosphere is laid back and unpretentious. Unlike other bars cluttered with dozens of televisions and hundreds of beer mirrors, Stober’s has just two smallish flat screens tucked out of the way and a moderate collection of framed historic photos hung neatly on the walls. It feels so much like a comfy living room, you could just about nod off there. In fact, if you want to, there’s even a couch in the corner. That’s not to say that all this coziness means that patrons don’t get active and have fun at Stober’s. In fact, it’s sort of a niche-sport haven. Its shuffleboard tables are renowned the Lansing area. “Our tables are in the best shape of any around,” Gustafson said. “They’re treated all the time and really kept up.” Though there’s currently no shuffleboard league at Stober’s, one may be in the making soon. Meanwhile, there’s always Sunday night live music to piqué patrons’ entertainment interests. Yup, I said Sunday night. “Linda Stober started the en-
tertainment on Sunday night as a favor to the people in the service industry,” said Gustafson. “They’re always working when most of the good entertainment is going on other places.” Again with all of the laidback niceness! Also easy-going and nice are the waitstaff, who will be as attentive as any customer needs, and while the bar doesn’t serve food, they welcome carry-out from other places. They’ll even give you a menu for Moriarty’s Pub next door. Just seems like a nice thing to do. Between the atmosphere, the tribe of regulars, accommodating waitstaff and mindblowingly comfortable barstools, being at Stober’s is as cozy as being in your own living room with all your friends there, and someone offering to get you takeout. Makes one wonder why you’d waste any time in your own living room anyway.

Keweenaw Pasties Talk about worth the trip: Next time you’re wondering if you’re going too far out of way to get to a bar, consider how far the amazing Haitian-mahogany woodworking behind the bar came to get to Stober’s. The Merlin-encrusted, griffinadorned mantle was discovered by Ruby Stober in a California bar years ago. The whole thing came cross-country via train to Lansing, and the building’s façade had to be removed for its installation.

‘Music History’ at MSU
Sandra Seaton’s “Music History” tells the story of a group of African-American college students from Chicago attending the University of Illinois during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s. The show plays at the MSU Arena Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 14. In the coming-of-age drama, the show’s main characters, Etta and Walter, are attracted to each other, but there are conflicts. Walter, described as “intellectual and hip,” is recently back from the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee’s (SNCC) voter registration campaign in Mississippi and trying to readjust to life on campus and keep active with the SNCC. Etta, an “independent free spirit,” wants to gain Walter’s trust. Etta and Walter find themselves up against racial segregation and other social pressures, and they search to find themselves amid a very political environment. “Music History” is sponsored by the MSU College of Law, The Michigan Humanities Council, the MSU Department of Theatre, James Madison College and the Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Student Services & Multicultural Issues. • Sandra Seaton’s “Music History,” directed by John Lepard • 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11; 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13; 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14 • Arena Theatre in the MSU Auditorium on MSU’s campus • $12; $10 seniors (60 and older); $8 students.
