DETROI T

E. Lansing band releases locally shot music video

2010 brought lots of newness for East Lansing alt-rock group Wilson: a new, debut album (“Standing on the Reel”) and a new singer (Chad Nicefield), to name a few. Add to that a first music video for the track, “Snake Eyes.” If you’re familiar with Wilson’s music, then the theme of zombies in the music video won’t come as a surprise. Like the band’s album, which centers around a zombie apocalypse of sorts, the action-packed video is based on the concept of a “zombie mockumentary,” where the band goes around capturing people to party with them at a show. The guys — Nicefield, Jason Spencer (guitar), Joel Mathews (guitar), Drew Rambo (bass) and Michael McGowan (drums) — shot the video in two epic days outdoors in Livonia and at The Crofoot in Pontiac. Heavy riffing and raw, thick vocals are plentiful. See the band play live Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit, opening for national pop-rocker Every Avenue. • Wilson, Every Avenue, Before You Exit, What Happened In Vegas • 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22 • Saint Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit • Tickets $13 in advance; $15 day of show. Tickets available at Livenation.com, ticketmaster.com and service charge free at St. Andrew’s Hall Box Office Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 22.

A bachelorette party at Rum Runners

Dueling pianos upstairs, DJ downstairs make a fun night Rum Runners in Lansing has entertainment down to a science. “We are bachelorette party headquarters,” said Rum Runners promotions manager Tim Antes. “They come from all over the state. It’s just a fun place for a party. It’s interactive. The piano players get people up there on stage and everyone has a great time.” Just how much of a “party headquarters” is Rum Runners? Well, enough so that they need a promotions manager, at least. It’s not just bachelorette parties either. According to Antes, the bar hosts 10 or more organized parties. “Parties set the tone for the weekend,” he said. “People are packed in here, and it makes them want to stay and have a good time.” Apparently some clever person at Rum Runners noticed that lots-of-people-beget-lots-more-people cycle, and the result was Friday night luau parties. Each week, names are drawn from dueling piano request slips, and winners receive a party for themselves and up to 50 guests including a “luau style” dinner. And just what are all of these parties of people flocking to Rum Runners for?

Well, in case you’ve been particularly unobservant for the past 15 years, Rum Runners is widely known for its dueling piano act. It’s a fun show, and unless you have no sense of humor or hate having a good time, it’s a great way to spend an evening. What may be less known is that Rum Runners is actually two bars in one. While the dueling pianos go at it upstairs, an all-request DJ plays downstairs. “We consider ourselves Lansing’s best entertainment,” Antes said. “Some bars may have live music or a DJ sometimes, but we have both every night. Early in the night people will start upstairs, have some drinks, start feeling good and then they go downstairs to dance.” Rum Runners not only has two floors, but patrons can get drinks from four different places on those floors. “I’ve clubbed for 20 years,” Antes said, “and the worst thing about other clubs is waiting 15 or 20 minutes to get a drink. We always have fast, friendly service, and there are multiple ways to get drinks.” One of those drinks you can get at

various locations is the bar’s own Rum Runner. In keeping with the island feel of the place, the Rum Runner contains light and dark rum, black raspberry liquor, banana liquor and more. You may even be able to get some sand tossed in there, if you’re lucky. In June, Rum Runners will celebrate 15 years of bringing this dual entertainment to Lansing. Though the bar is not yet releasing details on the celebration, Rum Runners loyalists will want to stay tuned. Rumor has it a block party-style event with outdoor dueling pianos could be in store. Until the details are unveiled, the bar’s usual annual events will have to keep everyone satisfied. The biggest two are the St. Patrick’s Day and New Year’s Eve Parties. New Year’s Eve at Rum Runners is a fancy-pants ticketed event with prize giveaways, dinner party favors and more. There’s nothing like waiting out a party going to parties, and Rum Runners likes parties. Now on Thursdays DEC. 16 – DEC. 22

White House communications director Toby Ziegler becomes obsessed with getting a proper burial for a homeless Korean War hero, who died on the streets in a coat Ziegler had given to Goodwill. He arranges a military funeral for him at Arlington National Cemetery, and when the president worries this might create a precedent, Ziegler replies, “I can only hope so.”

The 10 greatest TV episodes of Christmas

‘The Brady Bunch’ 1969 Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson) loses her voice days before Christmas, imperiling her chance to sing a solo at church. At the mall, little Cindy tells Santa she doesn’t want any toys or games (unlike the greedy kid ahead of her in line). All she wants is for her mom to get her voice back.

MCT News Service

‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ 1970 As the episode begins, Mary is talking excitedly on the phone at her office desk — lavishly decorated for the holidays — planning her Christmas visit with her mother. Right afterward, however, boss Lou Grant informs her that she’ll have to work on Christmas Day. Later, another colleague manipulates Mary into working for him on Christmas Eve too. Virtually alone in the building that night, Mary is frightened when someone calls and hangs up without speaking. She hears a bang and footsteps down the hall. She quickly calls friend Rhoda to say a murderer is approaching. Then she arms herself with a Santa figurine and prepares to throw it as the door bursts open to reveal Lou and colleagues Murray and Ted, arriving to whisk her off to a holiday celebration.

What’s the holiday season without the television specials? While Rankin and Bass may have cornered the market on stop-motion productions like “Rudolph,” that never stopped our favorite network shows from getting into the act. From “The Brady Bunch” to “The Simpsons,” our boob tube favorites have come up with creative and entertaining holiday episodes, whether you celebrate Festivus or Chrismukkah. Here’s a look at the 10 greatest TV Christmas episodes.

‘Andy Griffith Show’ 1960 On Christmas Eve, town scrooge and store owner Ben Weaver demands Andy jail a local moonshiner, even if it means the poor sap is separated from his family. Andy tries to dissuade Ben, but he’s a stubborn old coot. So Andy, ever wise, jails the whole family (conspirators) so they can spend Christmas together. At the jailhouse, the moonshiner’s family, together with Andy, Aunt Bee, Barney and Opie, have a lovely holiday feast. Old Ben spies this through the window, and his grinch’s heart grows three sizes. To join in, he gets himself arrested and brings a suitcase full of presents. Show ends with Ben snoozing, after finishing off a jug of that moonshine.

Sure, by this point the stalwart comedic drama had lasted three times longer than the actual Korean War and had long since lost most of its edge. But the Christmas episode “Death Takes a Holiday,” written and directed by Mike Farrell (who played Trapper John replacement B.J. Honeycutt), was a good reminder of what the show could be with the right material. Father Mulcahy organizes a party for local orphans, and Winchester learns something about the season. But the central story finds Hawkeye, Honeycutt and Houlihan struggling to keep a gravely wounded soldier alive at least past midnight so his family won’t forever associate the holiday with his loss.

‘The Office’

1989 The family goes Christmas shopping, and Bart sneaks away to get a tattoo. He requests the word “Mother,” but Marge interrupts the inking process at “Moth” and takes Bart to a tattoo-removal clinic, where she spends the family’s Christmas money. With the holiday in peril, Homer heads to the dog track, where he bets on an entrant named Santa’s Little Helper. The dog finishes last, is abandoned by his owner and eventually follows Homer and Bart. When they return home, the family thinks Homer brought the dog as a gift and the holiday is saved.

You not only had the guys’ goofy trip to Benihana, you had Kelly singing karaoke to Ryan, Michael’s plan to take Jan to an all-inclusive resort (“You know what that means!”), but you also had one of my favorite “Office” speeches ever — Michael on “bros before hos”: “Why? Because your bros are always there for you. They got your back after your ho rips your heart out, for no good reason. And you were nothing but great to your ho, and you told her that she was the only ho for you. And that she was better than all the other hos in the world. And then suddenly, she’s not your ho no mo’. “

‘The O.C.’ 2003

1955 One forgets how almost spartan it was in the Kramdens’ tiny apartment. In a “Gift of the Magi”inspired episode, Ralph hocks his new bowling ball to buy Alice a Napoleon orange juicer (you squeeze the oranges on the emperor’s head and the juice squirts out his ears). For Ralph, Alice buys him a new bag for the bowling ball she knows he loves so much.

‘TAXI,’ 1978 First of all, no Andy Kaufman as Latka, who must have been boycotting because the plot was so lame. Louie (Danny DeVito) is less angry than usual because his long-lost brother, a professional gambler, is coming from Las Vegas to visit for Christmas. It turns out the brother is more interested in the garage poker game than seeing Louie and his long-suffering mother. It all ends cheerily when the brother loses a huge hand to Alex (Judd Hirsch) and so has to let the mom stay with him in Vegas.

‘WINGS,’ 1990 It’s a sad and tedious Christmas Day at Tom Nevers Airport because everybody’s either working or has nowhere to go. The plot gets sadder and more tedious when the gang visits ticket agent Fay Evelyn Schlob Dumbly DeVay Cochran at home, thinking she’s having a Christmas party. Actually, she’s home mourning her husband, who has been dead a year. To celebrate the birth of Christ, they all fly over Nantucket Sound so Fay can scatter his ashes. But Lowell (Thomas Haden Church) spills them. After he vacuums them, she tosses the ashes out the window in a DustBuster. Ho ho ho.

‘Seinfeld’ 1997 George’s father, Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller), creates “a Festivus for the rest of us,” an alternative to the commercialized tradition of Christmas. During Festivus, family and friends are allowed to air their grievances to one another, and they compete in showing off feats of strength. Instead of displaying a Christmas tree, there is a simple aluminum pole that stands undecorated.

Emo-boy Seth tries to get Ryan into the holiday spirit by celebrating “Chrismukkah,” a combination of Hanukkah and Christmas that Seth created to honor the divergent religious beliefs of his parents. The strange-but-sweet holiday serves to help Ryan, Marissa and the rest of “The O.C.” gang forget previous Christmases spent with squabbling families. It also involves some of the ugliest Christmas sweaters ever seen on the Fox network.

Try two combination ($6.95) of ginger butternut squash soup and a half Tuscan chicken with pesto sandwich (grilled chicken strips, grilled red peppers and onions, provolone cheese and pesto sauce).

Warm up with Zoup! soup Esther Gim | NOISE

Zoup! opened just in time in downtown Lansing to warm up your belly during the winter. The restaurant is a soup smorgasbord, with a dozen varieties on tap. Soups range from the tried and true (chicken pot pie) to the unique (ginger butternut squash). The pot pie and lobster bisque are so popular that they’re available daily. The rest varies; be sure to check the website to see what’s being served that day.

THE SCENE

The restaurant makes good use of the dining space, with tables in the main area, seats facing the windows and more tables along the wall, but ultimately it feels a little cramped. I was weaving through tables carrying a tray full of food, hoping I didn’t trip or bump into anything.

THE FOOD

LJ-0100058950

Soups come with a side of bread (but it’s more like a big chunk) — multigrain, French or sourdough. But it’s not just about soups, which come as a cup, side, bread bowl or XL.

The southwest turkey sandwich comes with sliced turkey, pepper jack cheese, tomato and chipotle mayo ($6.35) and a side of lobster bisque soup $4.50. There also are plenty of sandwiches and salads to round out your meal. There’s also a “try two,” ($6.95) which offers your two choices of half salad, half sandwich or side of soup. I had a side of the lobster bisque soup ($4.50) and the southwest turkey sandwich ($6.35, turkey slices, pepper jack cheese, tomato and chipotle mayo). Laura had the try two: ginger butternut squash soup and the tuscan chicken sandwich (grillen chicken strips, grilled red peppers and onions, provolone cheese and pesto sauce). Our soups were phenomenal. The squash soup was a sweet, warm bowl of comfort food, creamy and with a hint

of ginger. The lobster bisque was full of lobster, with a slight kick of pepper. The sandwiches also were impressive — fresh, flavorful and grilled to perfection. The pesto sauce particularly hit the spot.

‘Star Wars: Millennium Falcon - A 3-D Owner’s Guide’

BY RY D ER W I NDH A M (SCHOLASTIC)

This book is being sold in the kid’s section of bookstores, but every adult I have shown it to has been impressed with its coolness. I thus declare it my geek book recommendation for the holidays. It’s hard to convey in print how very nifty this book is, but I shall try. This ‘owner’s guide’ (with disclaimer “Please read this entire guide before you attempt operation”) is 3-D, with each page featuring a different level of the Millennium Falcon’s construction. As you turn the page, the next level down is revealed and its various functions illustrated. Including sections on armaments, sensors, propulsion, piloting, engineering, etc., I felt like a little kid, grinning like an idiot as I turned the pages. And I don’t even like “Star Wars” that much. Imagine how your “Star Wars” geek’s eyes will light up!

Dashboard sells out show

Dashboard Confessional is quite possibly the band that kick-started the entire emo movement. Known for bringing intense, vulnerable, personal emotions into his songs and onstage — something really apparent in the band’s breakout hit, “Screaming Infidelities” — frontman Chris Carrabba came onto the scene in the early 2000s. Acoustic guitar in hand, Carrabba and his band broke out quickly, thanks to their earnest, heartful delivery and perfect emo-pop ballads. Next came 2004’s anthem, “Vindicated,” which hit No. 31 on Top 40 and got placed on the “Spider-Man 2” soundtrack. Since then, Dashboard has toured with everyone from Bon Jovi (earlier this year) to New Found Glory. Believe it or not, this is the 10th anniversary year of the band’s debut, “Swiss Army Romance.” To celebrate, the guys re-released the album as a deluxe vinyl last month, with re-mastered versions of the album’s track listing, extended artwork and more. And, of course, they’re touring. Lansing-based Fusion Shows brings the Boca Raton, Fla.-based band Friday to the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac. The show sold out nearly two weeks in advance. • Fusion Shows presents the “Swiss Army Romance 10th Anniversary Tour,” with Dashboard Confessional, The Snowbirds, Cory Branan, John Lefler • 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17 • The Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. ‘Joe Louis: Hard Times Man’

Cake

BY R A NDY R O BER T S

| lansingnoise.com

(YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS)

Joe Louis was a titan, the undisputed heavyweight champion boxer for more than 12 years (a record 23 title defenses) and, probably, the greatest American sports hero of the 20th century. Yet, oddly to those of us who grew up hearing him talked about as if he were a folk hero in the mold of John Henry, the memory of his achievement has largely faded from our collective consciousness. Why? Possibly because, as Randy Roberts points out in “Joe Louis: Hard Times Man,” the sport that Louis strode through like a colossus has been in decline for decades. “During the 1930s in the United States,” Roberts writes, “5,000 to 6,000 professional boxers practiced their trade annually, compared to half that number worldwide today.” “Joe Louis” isn’t so much a biography as a cultural history of its subject’s life and times. Roberts is particularly sensitive to the issue of race. But “Joe Louis” isn’t sociology. It’s a thrilling account of an extraordinary life. No other American sports figure of the century performed with such grace under unimaginable pressure. Roberts has reclaimed this giant for us. Allen Barra | MCT News Service

Cake: Going the distance

Alt-rock band hits 20 years, new record Anne Erickson | NOISE

Coming up on its 20th anniversary, alternative rock group Cake will drop its sixth studio album, “Showroom of Compassion,” on Jan. 11. It’s the guys’ first release since 2004’s “Pressure Chief” and will come out on their own indie label, Upbeat Records. Produced and engineered by the band at their own solar-powered studio in Sacramento, Calif., the disc already has a Top 10 alternative hit in “Sick of You.” NOISE caught up with Vince DiFiore (trumpet/ euphonium/keyboards) — who along with John McCrea (vocals), Xan McCurdy (guitar/synthesizer) and Gabriel Nelson (bass/guitar/ rheem/bandalero) make up Cake — to talk about the group’s new album. NOISE: You’re coming up on the 20th anniversary of Cake. Is that crazy to you? DiFiore: It is. We started in the fall of ’91. It seems about right, but it does go by fast, no matter what age you are. It makes certain things

better. With this album coming out, I feel so much more cognizant of the process. I’m been through it before, so I’m much more aware of what it really means and how not to take it for granted. NOISE: You have a new album coming out on Jan. 11, “Showroom of Compassion.” Were you guys writing and recording during the 7-year break between albums? DiFiore: We really never stopped being a band. We toured two and a half years on “Pressure Chief,” and then after that, we slowed down our touring, got off our label and put out a b-sides and rarities record on our own. Then, we started making this album, and from the very first time we were introduced to these songs three years ago, they felt like they were something of value that deserved that sort of nurturing. NOISE: The album’s first single, “Sick of You,” cracked the Top 10 in alternative almost immediately. Surprised? DiFiore: I guess we had all hoped for that, and it was something we had seen in the past with songs like “Never There,” “The Distance” and “Short Skirt,

Long Jacket.” We didn’t assume that could happen again; but low and behold, it did. As the reality unfolds, it always seems a little surreal. NOISE: What’s the concept behind the album? DiFiore: That’s a good question. Ultimately, it’s a collection of different songs, and it’s an examination of what thrills and captivates us in real life. It’s about the common experience in these exciting and marvelous times we’re living in. NOISE: Going back to, “Short Skirt, Long Jacket,” did you ever think that song would become so legendary? DiFiore: No. I guess it is, though. It’s really had a resurgence, with it being on the Nano commercial and the theme for TV show, “Chuck.” It was a great surprise.

‘Black Christmas’ SOMERVILLE HOUSE (98 MIN., NOT RATED)

As my second favorite holiday film, this heartwarming tale of horror receives regular viewings as soon as the temperature begins to drop. Directed by Bob Clark, a name you might recognize as the director of everyone else’s favorite TBS-approved holiday movie “A Christmas Story,” “Black Christmas” is tense, gruesome and above all else, legitimately frightening. The story of a group of sorority sisters tormented by a deranged killer hiding out in their attic over winter break, “Black Christmas” is an early slasher film (1974) — and one of the best. The characters are unique and free of cliché (particularly Margot Kidder as boozy Barbie Coard); the killings rife with tension. The harrowing, twisted crank calls the killer makes to the house are totally unhinged and positively chilling. An ideal film to offset the usual, saccharine holiday fare, “Black Christmas” delivers yuletide scares galore. Season’s bleedings!

It was an eventful week for weather, the Detroit faithful and Spartan scares. Here, we’ll cover the week that was and a few snippets of what’s ahead for the week before Christmas.

Holiday show unites bands Busy year for Lansing band Cheap Girls

Anne Erickson | NOISE

With a reputation for crafting upbeat riffs, catchy hooks and sprawling indie alt-pop, Lansing’s Cheap Girls has carved a name for itself in the national alternative music scene. After all, the guys are signed to a national indie label (Paper + Plastick, founded by Vinnie Fiorello of Less Than Jake). They appear at many of national music festivals each year (Warped Tour, Harvest of Hope, Awesome Fest) — they played a whopping seven tours throughout North America this year alone. Christmas is on the mind, and the band — Ben Graham (drums), Ian Graham (bass/ vocals) and Adam Aymor (guitar) — headlines a special Holiday Show on Friday at Mac’s Bar in Lansing. After that, the group hits the road for a national tour with alt-punk act Against Me! Ben Graham chatted with NOISE about the show and what 2011 will bring. NOISE: Cheap Girls went on seven major tours this year. Sounds busy!

Ben: Yes! We’ve been super-busy this year. I think we did about 140 or 150 shows. We’ve been to the West Coast four times since last September. Plus, we’re doing a New Year’s Eve show in Chicago with The Copyrights. NOISE: What else have you been up to, besides touring? Ben: We’ve been working on lots of new songs. We recorded two new 7-inch records: one that’s out now in the UK and one that’s coming out in January that’s a split with (alt-rock band) Lemuria. We also did a tribute to Bad Religion which was a digital-only release put out by “SPIN” magazine and MySpace. NOISE: Tell me about your plans for this Christmas show at Mac’s. Ben: Our idea was to do a Lansing headlining show, since we have mainly done shows opening for other bands this year, but have mainly all Lansing or Lansing-native bands on the bill. Since it’s the holidays and a lot of our friends will be in town, we thought we’d just have a big party with lots of friends. We thought it would be even cooler if we mixed genres up a bit. NOISE: Cool! So how did

you mix up the genres? Ben: We have us, a loud rock band, plus a metal band, an acoustic solo artist and a hardcore band. It’s definitely going to be different and we’re keeping a low cover charge so that it’ll just be an easygoing and affordable show. NOISE: Plans for 2011? Ben: 2011 is going to start out very busy for us. First off, We have a tour with Against Me! We also have our new 7-inch split with Lemuria coming out. Then we have a tour in the works going to and from South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. After that, we have a lot of potential plans but nothing definite. Going back to Europe is high on our list of goals. We’ve been working on songs for a new album, so hopefully we’ll get back in the studio and work on that.

APOCALYPSE MINNESOTA

Sunday afternoon, news started to trickle in from across the big lake that something wicked had happened in Minneapolis — involving 17-plus inches of snow and a structural collapse. Little did we know that James Cameron had decided to film an impromptu scene for his next apocalyptic blockbuster. Not really, but it looked a lot like something he’d conjure up. FOX began to air stunning footage from inside the Metrodome of the roof ripping open to deliver a sugar-like bomb-drop of snow onto the indoor turf. Did you know that this has happened before? Three times before, actually — between 1981 and 1983. My question is this: while it appears that some changes were made between then and now, how is it possible for architects to NOT anticipate this type of ridiculous weather? The Metrodome is in Minneapolis! Build the thing to withstand a winter wallop.

LIONS WIN

It happened — and with Drew Stanton (notorious Care-Bear hurler) at the helm! I’d elaborate, I but have become nauseatingly superstitious about the Lions and fearful of jinxing. Let’s just bask in the glory of 3-10 and hope for three more weeks of horrifically bad football that leads to Detroit wins.

SPARTANS REGROUP

After a huge scare from Oakland University last week, the Spartans watched with holiday glee as that same dangerous opponent de-railed No. 7 Tennessee this week in the upset of the college basketball season thus far. If you’ve watched any Spartan hoop this month, you’re probably feeling a wee bit uneasy (read: queasy) about some lackluster performances against seemingly weaker adversaries. That ends now — and by “that” I mean the weaker opponents. After a boxed lunch game in the form of Prairie View A&M (who!?), MSU runs smack into No. 25 Texas, followed by No. 20 Minnesota, as our Big Ten season kicks off. I’m thinking that a little “R & R” will go a long way for our guys; mostly because “R & R” in East Lansing under Coach Izzo typically translates into a rejuvenated and re-focused squad.

BIG TEN LOGO, LEGENDS & LEADERS

To the collective brain of the marketing firm Pentagram, hired by the Big Ten Conference: your employees lied on their resumes. There is no way a group of adults came up with that new logo. I joked with friends that I’ve drawn up more impressive things using Microsoft Paint at 4 a.m. (Most aren’t appropriate for public display, but that’s neither here nor there.) I’m disappointed that the “B10” unveiled this new logo, sidled with two new division names, “Legends” and “Leaders,” and expected to be lauded for their creativity, innovation and bold design. I’d just hate to think that along with having twelve teams and still being called the Big Ten, we’ll also have to deal with the ire of other conferences for exceedingly lame division names. What was wrong with “Great Lakes” and “Heartland?”

We’re stoked to hear what Hogan (the geek) and Cooper (the ginger) have to say about what’s happening around town. In between podcasts, Hogan and Cooper keep their site awash in fresh content by blogging at gingerandthegeek.com and tweeting as @gingerATgeek. You can also find them on Facebook. Hogan’s blog, Geek Speak, features musings on comic books, video gaming, movies and more. Cooper’s blog Kitty Corner focuses on fashion, crafts and beauty tips. (We knew she was a fashionista — that’s why we picked her for our thrift store shopping challenge this fall.) The show features interviews with guests, and three local folks stopped by for the first episode. Chad Jordan of Cravings Popcorn talked about the new flavors he’s experimenting with at his Old Town store. (Chocolate driz-

zles and infused coconut oils? Yum!) Digitaltrends.com tech writer and movie buff Jeffrey Van Camp gave his two cents about which tablets and e-readers are the best bang for the buck this holiday season. Van Camp, who also runs cinemasoldier.com, will be back for the next episode to review holiday movies. The next Ginger and the Geek podcast will be available for listening and as a download on Dec. 23. Look for the button on the www.lansing noise.com homepage for the latest from Ginger and the Geek.
