Christmas tracks from alt-rocker The Verve Pipe, festival songs from local jazz great Thom Jayne, music from Lansing blues band The String Doctors — just a sampling of what’s on tap for tonight’s “BackStage Pass” Christmas special. Music engineer Ryan Wert bought a neighboring house for $8,000 in REO Town, renovated it and opened Elm Street Recording

Tricia Bobeda | NOISE

A rapper, jazz combo, rock band, live orchestra and two a capella groups made up a recent work week for recording engineer Ryan Wert. The 28-year-old Lansing resident runs his own business, Elm Street Recording, out of a newly renovated house in REO Town. “It really runs the gamut of everything,” Wert said about his clients. “The tools are the same but the process is different for everything. It’s like a new job almost every day.”

He relies mostly on word of mouth for getting gigs and is busy seven days a week. “I work with one rapper, and then that rapper refers four of his friends to me so then all of a sudden all I’m doing is rap for a week,” Wert said. “But then inevitably things shift and all I’m doing is Christian hardcore for a month.” Wert was in a couple of bands in high school but said he soon realized that he enjoyed the process of recording more than performing. Hope College let him design his own curriculum and helped him find internships to prepare for his career as a recording engineer. “Like most kids my age, I was way into the ’90s grunge scene and all that stuff, but when I got to college is when I really started opening up and listening to all sorts of things,” Wert said. “There are few genres that I can’t find something that I really like in. I’m kind of picky so I wouldn’t say I love everything. But I can find something to love about everything.” Wert worked as an intern and later an assistant for Glenn Brown, the Emmy-winning East Lansing music

• www.villagesummit.org Veteran South Lansing resident Marcus Brown and his wife Chitra Pulliam bought the foreclosed house next to their house and turned it into a micro community center called Village Summit at 119 E. Barnes Ave., near the corner of Barnes and Washington avenues. After several months of renovations and paperwork, the center is up and running. The Village Summit is a non-profit organization that provides free books, tutoring, healthy snacks and gently used toys to children near the South Lansing neighborhood where it’s located. The Summit was designated as a place to serve meals to kids last summer using funds from the free and reduced lunch program. Volunteers converted an empty lot nearby into a community garden project. A bank of computers and internet access give students a place to work on school work and adults a chance to get help with resumes and job applications. The Summit collects gently used books, toys and games to give away. Donations of winter coats, hats and gloves also are welcome. — Tricia Bobeda

• www.reoartalley.com Lansing’s newest art gallery — Art Alley — opened this summer at 1133 S. Washington Ave. in the REO Town neighborhood. Art Alley is owned and operated by the Center for New Enterprise Opportunity (NEO Center). NEO Center president Tom Stewart said Art Alley is just the beginning of his goals for bringing creative space to REO Town. “In the long run, we hope to open another facility that’s kind of an art co-op, where the people will work together in a business incubator sense,” Stewart said. “Somebody may be working on a painting, next to somebody working on graphic design, or photography.” Until the co-op is up and running, Stewart said Art Alley will house exhibits of local artists’ work. Stewart was inspired by touring another Michigan venue that combined an artists’ co-op space with a gallery and retail space. “It’s a place to start,” Stewart said. “I think philosophically and historically art has always been at the core of urban revitalization.”

producer who has credits on more than a thousand albums. It was there that Wert became friends with The Verve Pipe drummer Donny Brown. “Ryan is a freak in a great way,” Brown said. “He’s got a great engineer’s disposition. When you’re recording, you want somebody who brings a certain vibe to the room.” Wert has worked on several projects with The Verve Pipe, including its recent children’s album. “Whenever I’m doing something for The Verve Pipe and I want the groove to be a little stronger and I want some fresh ears on it, I need a different perspective, I throw it his way,” Brown said. Brown said recording engineers need a blend of technical and people skills, and Wert has them both. “I’ll go down a certain path and make a big mess, but in that mess is the idea that I want,” Brown said. “He’ll come along with a broom and clear all the debris away and tie all of the pieces of what’s working together into something that can be handed off to someone to mix. Tons of people ask Ryan for that kind of thing. He can do something in three minutes that would take me three hours.” For the first year after Wert struck out on his own, most of his clients were friends. He didn’t have his own space yet, just a mobile unit of gear he packed up and moved to bands’ practice spaces. He turned part of the house in REO Town where he and his wife live into a makeshift recording studio, but his business was quickly outgrowing the space. When a neighboring house foreclosed, Wert bought it for $8,000 and started renovating. Wert and his parents did all the work on the dilapidated house themselves over six months. “My grandparents owned a hardware store so my mom is very, very handy,” Wert said. He moved into the spiffed up space about a month ago. Wert’s wife is thrilled with the new arrangement. Having bands jamming in their living room at night wasn’t ideal for her work schedule. “I frequently have bands here until 10 or 11 and she’s a teacher, so she’s up at six,” Wert said. Setting up shop next door to his house makes for an easy commute. It was also a logical step for Wert because he’s an advocate for the revitalization of the REO Town neighborhood. He helped install the new REO Town sign on the site of the old Deluxe Inn, and a piece of spray painted art from the graffiti project on the same site hangs on the wall of his recording studio. He wants to stay an accessible option for local musicians. “I’ve raised my rate a grand total of five dollars since I started,” Wert said. “There are lots of studios that charge way more than me and are bigger than me but that’s not what I want to do. I like being able to be a place where almost anybody can come.”

NOISE file photo It’s not just that you have to see the Traveler’s Club to believe it, you also have to experience it. This is because while you may be convinced of the unlikely existence of an antique tubathemed diner in Okemos upon arrival, this charming fact is only one of many surprises inside. Did I say “diner”? Because it’s not really a diner. Though it looks and feels exactly like a diner — albeit one covered in really old tubas and African art — it’s really difficult to categorize an establishment serving more than 200 varieties of beer from around the world as anything but a bar. That’s right, more than 200 kinds of beer. So while you salivate over that thought, you can also confirm that the Traveler’s Club is definitely a bar. But it’s also a restaurant with an equally astounding number of international dishes. The menu reads like a 23-page travel memoir. It’s so intense, it needs a table of contents. Page after page is labeled, “Latin America,” “Asia,” “Mediterranean” and more. There’s even a region of the month featuring specialty dishes. December happens to be Belgium, with specialties including Crostini di Polenta ai Fungi, Capunatina and smoked salmon with

Ben Keeler holiday show

Things are coming full circle for Ben Keeler. The Lansing-born musician (ex-Van Ermans) currently lives San Francisco, but he’s home for the holidays and putting together a show with his favorite Lansing bands: Billiards Music and Violent Sun. “It’s a bunch of old friends that have been playing in the Lansing music scene for years,” he says. “We are sharing the stage with friends that go way back to our first days of playing in bands back in middle school.” Ben Keeler’s band, the 500 Club, is spread out between California, Chicago and Michigan. But that didn’t stop them from releasing a new album this year. The pop-rock release, “Water Water,” is packed with lots of different instrumentals, from horns to strings to a choir of beautiful voices. Next up: Keeler is recording an acoustic record next spring and releasing a new full-length next fall. • Holiday Show with Ben Keeler and the 500 Club, Billiards Music, Violent Sun • 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23 • The Loft, 414 E. Hollow Drive powers heavy music with strong melody Metal band from Jackson at Uli’s tonight

Anne Erickson | NOISE

In more than a year and a half of heavy-duty rocking, Hollow Drive has learned how to craft tunes that are melodically catchy and musically challenging. Its 14-track full-length, “From the Ashes,” is packed with power-riffs and commercial melodies that are well written and compelling. The guys have opened for a seemingly never-ending list of heavy music bands: GWAR, Fear Factory, 36 Crazy Fists, The Misfits. “We’ve been blessed to be able to play with most of our favorite bands that we’ve looked up to,” lead guitarist Markus Wells said. “Bands from Sevendust to Lamb of God to Apocalyptica. What influences us is the passion for the music and the heart to take the beating it gives you and not give up.” Markus, Mad Mike Wells (drums, sampling), Big Al Consiglio (guitar, vocals), Sam Wagner (bass) and Ryan Grove (vocals) play the “Master Bay Tour” Thursday at Uli’s Haus of Rock.

If you ask Markus, he says it’s a “very special show” for the guys. “We play exclusively in Lansing at Uli’s, because the owner knows how to do things right. It’s about the music, not tickets and numbers,” he said. “Uli’s supports the scene with all its heart and is one of the few venues in the state that does so.” Next up: Hollow Drive is taking January off to get ready for the release of its new album, “The Architect” (out on DBM Records). Andy P. (Sponge) is mastering it. What is the best thing about being part of the metal community? “I think it’s amazing. The scene has changed over the years, and this band has been a staple in that change,” Markus said. “We used to have a more ‘cutthroat’ Ohio or Wisconsin style scene, where bands compete against each other. Nowadays, bands are working together at multiple levels, but all helping each other. “We didn’t get where we are alone. Bands like Sin Theorem, Death Valley Dragline, Silence is Broken, Whelm, Chaos Theory, just to name a few — there’s an

We always miss home.” As for the future, the guys hope to make more friends — not fans — on the road. “We try to keep everything personal at shows,” Markus says. “We’re there to make our friends smile and make more friends.”

Pub more than about sports Esther Gim | NOISE

Jimmy’s Pub, located north of East Lansing on Chandler Road, is a big restaurant with a casual atmosphere and sizeable menu. The location is somewhat of a hike for both Laura and me, but it’s one of those places we’d go out of our way to visit again.

THE SCENE

Jimmy’s was extremely busy on a recent Wednesday night. People packed the bar area as an MSU basketball game was about to tip off. Families and other big groups of people took over the rest of the tables. The restaurant caters to the sports fan but doesn’t do so obnoxiously. There are plenty of TVs around, but they aren’t excessively loud, which is nice. Not everyone may be interested in the game.

THE FOOD

With an expanded menu, food ranges from Mexican, Italian and American grub. There’s also daily food specials, and a late-night happy hour of half-off appetizers from 10 p.m. to close Mon-

They include the Michigan chicken salad, Jimmy’s BBQ ribs, wet burrito and more. We started off with the Lebanese breadsticks ($4.99; also a signature item) — a big basket of warm, fried pita bread with ranch on the side. The big rectangular pieces of bread were fried but not at all greasy nor crispy, but pretty soft. And the light seasoning gave it a lot of flavor. We had heard good things about Jimmy’s pizza, so we split a medium specialty, the chicken BROTB ($13.99). There’s a lot going on in this 13-inch pizza — chicken, bacon, red onion, tomatoes and basil. The dough is a thin crust
