More than a feeling

n our previous issue, I commented how exciting this year 2013 was going to be The reality of the first months not only has confirmed this forecast; but, it states clearly that we are in front of one of the most challenging moments in Lantek history.

First, we are proving to every customer where we install our solutions and systems that we are contributing to the radical transformation of their reality. Once the startup is finished, new ideas come up: to modify processes, to introduce new areas, to define specific applications, to optimize procedures, or to integrate more systems. Everything is for the sake of a more harmonic and synchronized way of working. Second, we are about to launch our new version to the market which will set a milestone for the sheet metal sector. The progress we have achieved in material utilization, calculation speed, new workspace development, and management platform available resources is spectacular. Our R&D Center has performed their best ever. You will soon see the results. All in all, Lantek is confirmed as a universal company, not only geographically, being near of our customers and supporting them in any of their locations, but wherever they are. Lantek is also functionally universal, offering the widest software system portfolio, facing any scenario with great capability, and integrating customer existing systems, whatever they are. And last, but not least, Lantek is technologically universal, being able to cause maximum machine performance, whatever their brand or technology.

main topic

More profitable and competitive firms with REPLICA system integration mechanisms Under the REPLICA name, Lantek has developed a battery of system integration mechanisms designed to increase the productivity of a company. These mechanisms govern the running of the business and speed up response capacity and correction procedures in view of potential incidents.

With REPLICA mechanisms, a company can integrate all of its systems, as well as those of its suppliers and customers as appropriate. This makes the information more accessible and simpler and enables a company to devote its time and resources to fulfilling its objectives. What is unique about REPLICA is that, at its most sophisticated level, it enables the company to provide key indicators, in real time, of absolutely all business systems interconnected to the platform.

It saves time, improves processes, and, contributes to making the company more profitable and competitive. “Companies are aware, more so in times of crisis, that they have to be competitive and the most efficient. Irrespective of its size, if a company has all its systems integrated, it will be competitive under better conditions. It will be able to make decisions more quickly and wisely because it will have real data and knowledge of its performance history. REPLICA mechanisms, which were developed using the latest technology, adapt to the specific needs of each company. In fact, Lantek offers solutions at different levels,

designed for each type of information that is necessary to manage and link within a company. Web integration is the most advanced solution, thanks to the powerful API AvantiaServices, which allows you to interconnect systems in real-time and to have all the information in any of the company’s systems instantly. This mechanism facilitates decision-making and solves possible problems in the production process. It significantly reduces waiting time in the transfer of orders between different systems. This means that when a system finishes its process, it automatically sends the order to the next system, even though they are at different production sites. With AvantiaServices, the company provides synchronized information, in real time, even on mobile devices. Another integration mechanism developed by Lantek is the ERP Integrator, which facilitates the periodic transmission and synchronization of different formats of data between the Lantek platform and the existing management systems of the company for management and administration. This Integrator is able to define the frequency and amount of information that is synchronized. Lantek also works with CAD systems (CATIA, Inventor, SolidWorks, Solid Edge, etc.) or BIM (Tekla Structures, Graitec, SDS/2, etc.) through software add-ins that “read files in that format and directly transfer parts and assemblies generated in these design systems to the Lantek platform for further processing and manufacturing. Systems that benefit from this mechanism are Lantek Expert and Lantek Flex3d, besides Lantek Integra management platform. Masterlink is another of the mechanisms developed by multi-national Lantek. It is the simplest and most effective tool in many scenarios because it allows the transfer of orders between the company and the platform, thus saving cost and time. This mechanism is suitable for those companies that only need a link to perform this transfer of orders and results. Lantek has been implementing technological solutions in different markets in numerous countries, each with specific needs and different problems. This experience has allowed Lantek to consolidate a range of distinguishing integration mechanisms which are very well adapted to the degree of maturity of each company and which help to plan their resources, increase the performance of staff members and improve cost savings. Furthermore, the entire set of projects makes up a portfolio of projects, along with the progress indicators with which you operate.

Lantek faces any machine and any scenario and integrates all auxiliary elements that you already have (palletizers, robotic arms, etc.).

BUDGET • Management of several versions of the budget • Comparison between the real costs and the budget at any time. • Comparison between the real costs and the budget at any time. • Preparation of the formatted budget, ready for delivery to the client, along with technical data from the budget line. • Assignment and visualization of the workload in different scales of time, such as daily, weekly or monthly. • Determination of critical resources and their workload.

PRODUCTION • Control each resource and monitor the validity of the production plan. • Monitor real costs and compare with the budgets. You can access each aspect of the project at any time to create timely reports on the status of the production. Each of the parties and the elements are organized according to the phases and chapters of the project. • Decide which process to sub-contract, depending on its urgency, its importance and its cost. • Control the status of each manufacturing order, whether it is being executed in your own plant or in a sub-contractor. • Modify your plans based on the changes and revisions of the client’s requirements that may occur and the progress of the project at any time.

FINANCIAL PLANNING Projects oftentimes expand over long periods of time. Throughout the entire life of the project, it is essential to have the capacity to know the revenue, expenses and cash flow for the project so that they may be compared with the budget and the necessary adjustments made. With this information, you can directly update the manufacturing plan, whether manually or automatically, and individually monitor the resources subject to measurement. PROVISIONING • Generate the requirements of purchases divided by type (sheets, tubes, profiles or consumables), starting with the specifications established in the design. • Detail specification of the materials prior to proceeding with the purchase. • Monitor the purchase orders corresponding to each project. • Select and reserve the materials in inventory, starting with the requests for concrete purchases. • Monitor the expenses, comparing them with original plan. • Define your own tracing management and quality control system once the merchandise is received. CAM DESIGN Thanks to the processing capacity of Lantek software and its advanced algorithm, you can calculate the most optimal nesting for each technology, making use of the material without neglecting the quality and finishing of your pieces. Furthermore, you can make use of CNC adapted to the various machines and technologies that you have at your disposal, which are optimized for preserving the life of the machinery and its tools. This also optimizes energy consumption and shortens operating times.

DELIVERY TO ASSEMBLY • Control the articles ready for issuance, as well as the inbound deliveries or rejections. • Plan the deliveries with details of all of the issuances. • Procure the weight of the manufactured elements ready for installation, such that suitable transportation may be contracted. • Confirm the proper installation of the elements sent and update the design. CERTIFICATION • Register in the system of all of the project’s certifications, starting with the confirmation that the various sets have already been installed. • Visualize the data of each certification per budget article, installed element and execution status, prepared for carrying out the invoicing. INVOICE • Generate invoices associated with the certificates issued in any format: partial, progressive, grouped. • Control financial risk at all times thanks to a complete monitoring of the project’s invoicing. CLOSING • Obtain indicator results and extract reports that allow you to compare the project budget with the real costs, grouped by different criteria (budget elements, cost centers, etc.). • Evaluate performance in the real execution of the project by work centers. • Evaluate the project’s profitability.

interviews

Joseba Pagaldai Commercial Director

“Lantek’s success lies in having been a leader in technology and opening its own offices” Joseba began his career at Lantek by working in R&D as a Software Development Engineer. His career continued on in Support and Marketing until he became the Commercial Director for Europe. Then, Joseba progressed to Lantek Commercial Director, a position that he has held for 6 years. He is also Head of Lantek in Asia.

Since your appointment as Commercial Director of Lantek, what have been the main challenges you have faced (taking into account the environment in which we live today)? The globalization of the company has been the biggest challenge I’ve had to face, as we started with approximately 14% of our turnover coming from exports. However, we have now increased exports to 86.6%. This entire process involves understanding a new market and opening offices in faraway places with very different cultures, each with their own peculiarities. It is a long and complicated process. How has Lantek become the benchmark for its industry worldwide? There are two main reasons why we have established ourselves as an industry leader worldwide. The first is that we have always been at the forefront of technology and we are leaders in this area. The second is the globalization process and opening regional offices in key countries. There is also another very important reason, without which this growth and expansion would not have been possible. This has to do with the people who make up Lantek, the Lantek team. Lantek won the Innovation Award at the “La Cita de la Empresa Vasca” because of its innovation. What do you think were the reasons why Lantek won this award? To compete, you have to be innovative; otherwise, the customer cannot see the difference between hiring one company or another. Our solutions are high-quality and we differentiate ourselves by providing high-value and technologically advanced products and services. As for winning the award, the reason is, without a doubt, because we have always chosen the right path in terms of innovation.

The company operates worldwide with its own offices and over 200 employees. In which countries does Lantek operate and how has the company been able to expand globally to such an extent? Lantek is currently operating in 15 countries with 24 of its own offices located around the world. What sets Lantek apart from other companies is that other companies reach countries through their distributors, whereas Lantek reaches each area with its own offices and staff. Lantek has always been committed to globalization and growth. To support our partner manufacturers and offer them training, we had to have a presence in their countries with our own staff who could visit their companies and help in both commercial and technical tasks. As for the Lantek team, it should be mentioned that the team is made up of a group of professionals who are highly mobile. Any Lantek worker must be available to travel around the world and may be sent to various countries during their career with the company. The team is, in fact, multi-lingual. There are employees at the same administrative headquarters who speak a variety of languages, from Russian to Chinese to Italian, which facilitates providing services to different countries in their own languages. Finally, we should mention that the software has been translated into 17 languages during this process of global expansion, and Lantek’s support is performed in each and every one of these languages. Speaking about Lantek’s global expansion, what are the most active countries in which Lantek operates? Europe remains the most important continent, despite how things may seem because of the difficult situation in which we find ourselves in many countries.

In terms of the importance of continents, we can make the following evaluation: In Europe, Spain, Italy, and Germany are the most active countries, because they are wellestablished in terms of teams and offices, with many staff serving customers. Poland and Turkey have not been around so long, but are achieving good market shares. With regard to the Americas, Brazil is very important, being the longest-operating office in the area. The United States, however, is the fastest-growing office at the moment. Finally, let’s talk about Asia. In this area, Lantek offices have been operating the longest in Korea and China, and Korea is the fastest-growing country year after year. The best thing about being a global company is that sales are spread widely across the continents, thus creating a structure with less risk. This also means that we can open new offices with greater financial strength, thanks to a more consolidated network. Approximately how many customers would you say Lantek has worldwide? Currently, we have around 13,000 customers, and we exceeded last year’s figure of 12,000 customers in very little time. We also have around 19,000 Lantek licenses spread across the world. Speaking of manufacturers, which represent a large proportion of Lantek’s partners, what type of manufacturers are key in the company’s commercial strategy? Also, what kind of manufacturers does Lantek work with? We work with machine-tool manufacturers providing various types of cutting technologies, including: laser, punching, oxy-fuel, plasma, water jet, contours, 5-axis, and tubes. Some of the most represented manufacturers are: LVD, Han-Kwang, Unity Prima, Kaltenbach, Eckert, Danobat, Soitaab, Baykal, Sato, and Ermaksan. Many manufacturers do not have software for their own machines. That is why we are the best partner possible, because of the support we provide worldwide. In addition, with our software, we are capable of dealing with any developments that they may incorporate into their own machines. Other manufacturers, such as LVD and HanKwang, offer Lantek software with their machines that is customized with their own brands. They are “Powered By Lantek” partners. As Commercial Director and Head of Lantek Asia, how is Lantek currently positioning itself in this market? Where are the Asian offices located? What team does Lantek rely on in this area? We have two offices in Korea, one in Seoul and one

in Busan, with a team of 12 employees who are undisputed leaders and leagues ahead of the next competitor. We have twice the sales volume as the second-place market competitor. n China, we have offices in Shanghai and we are also present in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Wuhan, where Lantek has its own staff and a team of 10 people. Is there a new office in the area mentioned? Thailand is the new Lantek office in the area. This Lantek presence will help us to serve nearby countries, as Bangkok gives us easy access to surrounding countries, such as Indonesia and the Philippines. To what extent do the solutions offered by Lantek improve the productivity and management of a company in the metal sector? I’ll explain with an example. For subcontractors, it is very important to control the entire massive input and output process for orders. We provide a management system for these customers, so they have permanent and orderly access to all of the necessary information and can create quick and efficient budgets. Customers who implement projects with longer-term delivery dates need to plan for the purchasing of the materials they will need and the deliveries they will have to complete (even partial deliveries). To manage this entire process, they need a management and control system that will help them in the task. This is precisely where we help them make profits and control the development of the work. Customers who have their own products have other needs such as integrating with 3D CAD design systems like SolidWorks and Solid Edge, with which Lantek is perfectly integrated. Additionally, they require much more complex management of products than do other companies. We help them in this task as well as in managing parametric products. Finally, looking ahead, what are the main challenges facing the company over the next few months? For us, the future means remaining the industry benchmark in the countries where we are already established, mainly the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) area, and continuing to offer support to machine manufacturers, as we have done with our partners. The joint offering of Lantek machines and software supports them in their production and sales, providing the customer with a maximum-value proposal.

Lantek Wos, a step further

Lantek Wos is the tool designed by Lantek for the compilation and analysis of the results of workshop production. Nowadays, customers are looking for efficiency and quality in all aspects. One of them is the knowledge of the production results, whether in execution times or the final quality achieved.

with embedded operating systems such as Microsoft Windows XP Embedded, and obtain the maximum capacity for open operating systems from Microsoft.

Lantek Wos has evolved from being a serial communication system, designed to send files with CNC programming to primitive numeric controls with limited connectivity, passing through a hybrid system capable of also sending commands to handle the machine itself, until reaching the current system, embedded in the control, with a full graphic interface able to establish two-way communication with the machine through the API provided by the manufacturer.

Lantek recently introduced a solution for shortening the procedure for obtaining the machine production times of one of our customers. For this, Lantek has developed a few modules capable of picking up signals generated by the machine. Lantek Wos records and interprets all these signals, showing the operator all the times that they are involved in the production process: setup of machines, sheet metal tray changes, cutting times, stops, folding times, etc. Having real data available directly from the machine, the operator can carry out more accurate analyses and make better decisions regarding the actual situation of the workshop.

Lantek Wos can be installed in the Fagor 8070 and Sinumerik 840D numerical controls, work efficiently

The new version of Lantek Wos will even streamline the capture of real production data. It loads images in a parallel-programming thread, enable the use of the program while images are loaded, offers a new system of tabs, that allows the operator to navigate with a simple click, or the kiosk mode, an environment that makes use of the entire screen and simplifies the operator’s viewing environment. Lantek Wos has all the elements for integrating the management and control systems of production with the internal processor of the machine, providing visibility and maneuverability which were previously unthinkable.

Platform or product? The Platform concept has various meanings depending on the focus and scope concerned. In the world of software, one of the simplest platforms refers to the technological infrastructure that provides what is necessary for the development of multiple applications or products. With this definition, the operating systems themselves were the first platforms to exist. Out of those, both Java and the .NET framework constituted the next evolution. And so, this concept continued to evolve and expand, into what we know today as a platform.

The construction of platforms is increasingly becoming the path chosen by many companies in the industry to secure lasting and sustainable competitive advantage in time, basing all their business strategy on them, and thus taking its ability to offer products and services to another level. Google aims to become a platform to connect us to information (and offer us all kinds of components to this: Search, GMail, Maps, Docs, Drive, Calendar...). Facebook aspires to become the platform for social networks (the amount of applications based on your network of contacts is known to all). Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, and Microsoft with Windows Azure, are competing to be the platform for Cloud Computing. Apple, with iOS, has precipitated the platform necessary for the creation of an entire ecosystem of applications and services via their mobile devices. And these are just a few examples of companies that are committed to a platform-based approach, which are demonstrating that the possibilities around it are virtually endless. It is important to differentiate between productbased solutions, focused on solving specific needs, and platform-based solutions, focused on having the ability to meet multiple and diverse needs. The first usually has a much faster impact on the market and requires less investment to build.

But this advantage is often diluted over time since sooner or later a platform will be able to reach the same solution. On the other hand, the risk involved of the investment in building a platform is rewarded with increases in the capacity to generate value over time, thus reducing costs when developing future applications. When it comes to building a platform, the philosophy is relatively simple: rather than pursue the development of complete products (the definition of “complete can be complicated), one must think in terms of building useful components. These components (of greater or lesser complexity) should be able to work together, and sometimes transformed, to be replaced by others, or connect to new ones. Each one will exercise its responsibility, is the sum of all of them which actually gives a platform its reason for being: the ability to construct and the flexibility to adapt. And, if anyone still wonders, some time ago Lantek undertook to build its own platform, Lantek Integra, which also has the unique feature of being specially designed for the problems within the metal sheet, tube and profiles industry. Lantek Integra provides all the necessary resources to build the solutions that our customers require, allowing them to evolve into their operational and structural maturity.

case studies Productivity clearly increased in a very short time Conferdo focuses on software solution: Lantek Expert, Lantek Flex3d and Lantek Manager The Conferdo company, Esterwegen/Emsland, has achieved significant improvements in efficiency in the shortest of times since the introduction of Lanteksoftware (www.lanteksms.com). “We can clearly save costs and time, as our productivity has increased,” emphasizes the Managing Director, Georg Stichternath. “The biggest advantage for us is that every time we can get a complete insight into all process steps within seconds and can now work with a completely integrated production system.” Conferdo uses the Lantek-solutions to cut 2D and 3D steel parts. They also use a project management tool developed by Lantek, the software manufacturer. This installation started in mid September. Conferdo: globally active provider of components for wind farms Conferdo, among other things, manufactures girder masts – for wind power and radar systems, and also turbine houses and foundation constructions for on-shore and offshore-plants. The company currently has over 100 employees and uses three Lantek-software products: The 2D CAD/CAMsolution “Lantek Expert“ manages laser cutting and plasma\autogenic machines to process metal sheets and steel. “Lantek Flex3d” enables 3D-processing of tubes or other profiles. “Lantek Manager” delivers an overview on the processing status and overall performance from the production shed to the administration, which is up-to-date at all times. The tool has many other features, inclunding being able to prioritize orders. We are highly satisfied and view Lantek as our software and technology partner for further growth,” emphasizes Graduate Engineer Stichternath. “Being a globally active company we need reliable partners in order to guarantee a smooth workflow in our production at all times. Management now has a tool, according to Stichternath, to follow up on projects and optimize processes. The planning operators now have a tool to carry out fast interlocking, without interruption in the daily routine. “The drawing office can quickly and cleanly convert processes into CNC-code with various geometrics as drafts and an integrated CAD-programme”, says Stichternath. Integration of various machines with software Conferdo uses machines by various manufacturers,

for example, Kaltenbach, Geka and Voortmann. “The greatest advantage for our clients is that the machines from different manufacturers can now be controlled from a single interface”, stresses the Lantek-area manager for the North-East, Cvijetin Vasiljevic. “Operators can easily switch from one machine to another. There is only one contact for training and updates.” Next steps: Integration of the existing BIM- and ERP-systems Very soon, an integration of two existing software systems will take place at Conferdo with Lanteksolutions. Graitec is a “Building Information Model” (BIM) software, in which complex constructions for buildings are produced. Lantek can import the parts-lists, process the parts and label them. In addition, the Lantek software solutions are to be integrated with the existing ERP-System (“Enterprise Resource Planning”) Navision by Microsoft. Lantek has more than 12,000 clients globally, of which 850 are in Germany. It is the largest provider of non-proprietary CAD/CAM software in the metal sheet and steel processing sector. Large companies in Germany such as Deutsche Bahn, Siemens, VW and Mercedes, and many mediumsized companies offer glowing references to Lantek. The German branch of Lantek is in Darmstadt. From there 15 employees look after users in Germany, Austria, the German-speaking part of Switzerland, and the Netherlands on the telephone, with remote maintenance and on-site services.
