Foreword Liz Barron-Majerik, Lantra Scotland Director The work of Lantra in Scotland is aligned with the priorities of the Scottish Government and supports delivery in a wide range of areas including education and training, farming, environment, aquaculture, forestry, climate change and food and drink. To support the rural economy and enhance Scotland’s natural environment, we work to increase the number and diversity of employees in Scotland’s land-based and aquaculture sector and help to drive their skills development. We do this in close partnership with the Scottish Government, education partners, workforce development and skills agencies, trade organisations, membership bodies and individual businesses. Our work evolves to meet the changing priorities of the multiple industries we serve, aligning with the priorities of the Scottish Government. Whether it be working in partnership with SkillSeeder to administer the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Practical Training Fund, delivering the Agricultural Modern Apprenticeship pilot, supporting instructor development or the continued delivery of the Women in Agriculture Practical Training Fund and the Women in Rural Economy Training Fund, we continue our commitment to find innovative solutions to the skills challenges faced by the sector. We increased our focus on raising the number and profile of our Industry Champions and other key sector leads and ambassadors. Working with the Scottish Schools Education Resource Centre (SSERC) and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Ambassador hubs we continue to grow and facilitate a national network of
ambassadors, accessible to careers influencers, teachers, and community groups. Lantra is investing in developing the careers resource across the UK which will complement existing work in Scotland, updating and extending our virtual presence, designing and creating new web pages to have a wider reach and scope than ever before. Although this work is ongoing, we are confident that it will become the ‘one-stop-shop’ for anyone looking for a career or training within the sector, as well as a hub for news and updates on developing projects. However, we are also maintaining our outreach activities and have continued to deliver them throughout 2021-22, whether these have been virtual or face to face, live or recorded, for individuals or an audience of thousands, we have worked hard to ensure they were both engaging and effective. Lantra also plays an important role in ensuring that our industries are directly engaged in the development of standards, qualifications and apprenticeships so that they are fit for purpose and meet employers’ needs. In 2021-22 this also included support for Standards and Frameworks colleagues working with Skills Development Scotland and industry partners to pilot a fresh approach to developing qualifications and apprenticeships. Our research and engagement in apprenticeship delivery informed our priorities for capacity building into 2022 and beyond and has helped to increase uptake of apprenticeships in our sector. Promoting positive and rewarding career choices to a diverse audience We work to ensure more young people, career changers and career influencers have a better understanding of the rewarding career opportunities that exist in the land-based and aquaculture sector. Our support helps more employers and employees to be actively engaged in championing skills and career opportunities.
