h the wonders of summer time. It’s natural to associate summer with the nostalgia most of us have with our childhood: vacation from school, heading to the beach, family cookouts, and long nights under the stars with friends. Before even thinking about it, we are unconsciously heading to the rack of shorts and swimsuit area the second the first displays come to life at our favorite stores.

ANGEL CARDONA TALKS

The “Lob” or Long Bob has been in my opinion the most sought after summer haircut by far. Barely grazing the collarbone of the daring women who decide to chop off their long tresses, the Lob has clearly made a statement this summer. Typically worn with long layers in a variety of beachy wavy or sleek & straight looks with soft sun kissed highlights or even a sombre’.

Modern Pageboy’s are making a big statement by ever so slightly being trimmed just above the jaw line. You will most likely see them worn various ways such as tucked behind the ears, straight & smooth, or disheveled and messy. Which ever you fancy you can’t go wrong with a look this strong.

As far as hair color goes… I think we all can agree that the beautiful sun kissed locks are what we all have been craving, if you haven’t already talked your stylist into making you look like a natural sun worshipper. Balayombre or Balayage Ombre, some people are even calling it the “Bombre” is this summers must have color. No matter how you wear it whether short or long hair you really can’t go wrong which is the beauty of this ever so natural looking sun kissed color. 16

Leading in French style, a connoisseur of beautifying the most famous of manes: LAPALME Magazine’s creative director Angel Cardona, speaks with Laurent Dufourg, celebrity stylist and founder of the renown Privé Salon, along with the Privé line of products. AC: Hello Laurent, I have noticed you have been very busy with the opening of your new salon. What locations can we find you at and how many salons do you have? LD: I own two salons and my son Chelby owns a Prive’ Salon License in Orlando. I merged my LA salon with Byron William who used to work with me in Beverly Hills and I bought 50% of an existing salon on 5 East 57 St. The new salon is called L’Appartement Prive’. I spend most of my time in New York now for special events and private clients. AC: That is great news! Can you tell me a little about your background and where you’re from? LD: I have lived in Mexico City, Marbella Spain, but I grew up in Biarritz south of France. I started to do hair because I was playing in a band and needed to buy a new drum set. I was 15 years old... The rest is history haha!! AC: Do you feel that growing up in Biarritz, France influenced the decisions made for your business? LD: Yes! My boss was an amazing mentor. AC: Was it a difficult decision moving to the United States after opening up several successful salons in Europe? LD: Yes. It was difficult because I had to start from the bottom again, and I didn’t speak English.

All I can say is work hard, stay humble, and surround yourself with talented people. . AC: Where did your desire to produce a product line come from? LD: I was tired of taking two suitcases of products every time I was going to a photo shoot so I decided to create my own line. AC: Are there any new products being released? And where can we find them? LD: I always come out with two new products every year. We are in 600 salons and in 12 countries. AC: Was there a moment in your career which you feel propelled you to the next level? Perhaps the moment when you felt like you had made it, and were now a celebrity hair stylist? LD: I got a break when I gave a short haircut to Sharon Stone and Gwyneth Paltrow in the same week. The press went crazy I was in every magazine. AC: That sounds like an exciting time for you. Being a celebrity hairstylist I am sure everyone wants to know which celebrities have you had the pleasure of working with? LD: I got very lucky I was in Hollywood. Oh lets see from Sophia Loren to Sharon Stone, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terry Hatcher, Tea Leoni, Johnny Depp. Jewel, Debra Messing, Uma Thurman, Lindsay Lohan, and a few more.

AC: Do you feel that any celebrity in particular received major attention after receiving a make-over from you? LD: Yes, Gwyneth Paltrow for her role in the movie Sliding Door. Anna Wintour from Vogue mentioned it on Enews TV. AC: You have had quite an interesting life. Now I am sure our readers want to know what does a haircut from Laurent Dufourg run for these days and what does the experience entail? LD: I charge $300 for a haircut and I give 100% of myself. My guests leave my chair feeling like a million bucks. AC: Do you have any interesting stories from your celebrity client base? LD: Yes I do, A lot of stories! But I never gossip. That’s why my clients love me. I really love my work and learn every day from my staff. AC: How can our readers find you? LD: My Salon is located on 5 East 57th St. on the 7th floor, New York NY10022. Telephone to my salon is 212.355.2730 the Instagram and Facebook names you can find me under is “L’Appartement Prive Salon”. By: Angel Cardona

AC: What would you say to hairstylists that aspire to follow in your footsteps? LD: It’s the best industry in the world! 27

SISAU INTERVIEW

LEW

UNDRA A VOICE TO BE RECKONED WITH LAPALME Magazine catches up with Sisaundra Lewis after a wonderful season on NBC’s The Voice. With a voice from another world, a charming personality, and the stage presence of a true diva, there’s no wondering why this power vocalist is on the rise to major fame. BY: MASSIEL MANCEBO

WIS

MM: Watching you on the voice was so exciting! We’ve all grown accustomed to the phrase “Planet Sisaundra” your voice is unreal, You were incredible, what did it feel like to showcase your talent? SL: First of all, thank you, everyday that I was in the NBC The Voice studios, it was surreal to me from the beginning to the end. You would never imagine... I mean I knew I could sing but you don’t know until you get in front of people who are just completely judging you on your gift how good you are, so it was an honor to be there, in the moment; from singing to off camera stuff, it was really unbelievable to me. I felt like I was in a dream, and I still do because of every amazing “thing” that has happened to me since The Voice. MM: You’ve built up quite a fan base, what is it like to know that millions of people heard you sing? SL: Everything to me is an honor at this point. To be given the platform to do something like this and then have that kind of response from fans, and see the numbers growing exponentially everyday on all of social media –I think on twitter I had around 1500 followers, when I started the show, now it’s up to almost 90,000. To have that sort of connection and responsibility and have others encouraging you all the time is humbling and empowering at the same time. This lets me know that every sacrifice I made was not in vain. It has been truly amazing, to be an inspiration for people and watch them follow their dreams just as I am now following mine. MM: Watching you on the show was extremely nerve racking as well, I couldn’t help but wonder what it must have felt like to be on that stage? How did you handle it so well? SL: It was definitely a very intense 10 months, of training, and scheduling along with learning songs every week, and vocal coaching. But when I step on stage that’s when I feel most comfortable, it feels like home to me. I’m alive. Whenever I did finally get everything learned & under my belt, I would make a phone call to my life coach Angie Brown, and she would always pray with me and give me words of encouragement. By the time she finished with me I just felt a peace. I walked on stage and was able to deliver because first of all, she grounded me in my belief, that from God, all good things happen. I remember her telling me to just let go and

believe that this is your moment and do it! When I did that, and took the stage, it felt like I was in the most comfortable space in my whole life and that’s performing and making people feel good while delivering the message. Like Blake Shelton has always told me: “I just want you to go out there and deliver that song, those lyrics” and that’s why you saw me in that relaxed state when it finally happened. MM: A lot of people including myself would say you’ve been extremely lucky to have worked with such big celebrities like: Adam Levine, Shakira, Blake Shelton and even Chris Martin! What was that like? SL: It’s mind blowing when you find that you are in the same room with them, and they are talking to you just like another human being, you’re just going: “Okay, well they’re human too”! They are just really talented and have found their niche. They have made it in the industry. To have them say the things that they said to me, that you witnessed on television was just like –really? You never know if someone’s going to say: “Who told you could sing girl?” (laughs). But when you get there, it’s the entire opposite. To be with them and hear it from that level of icons, was really amazing. MM: What was your favorite moment on stage, while in the competition? SL: Oh wow, my favorite moment -there were so many; I would have to say that one of the most iconic moments had to be when I did “New York State of Mind”, To sing a song like that –all the songs that I sang were from icons of course. But the deliverance of that song and it being the catapult to me moving forward to the live shows was very special to me. If I had to choose a second one it would have to be “It’s a Man’s World” the battle with Biff, it was a really brilliant moment for us both. I’ve never competed before, so to just be in that arena and have to battle with my voice against someone was all very new to me. I never considered it a battle, I just considered it a wonderful pairing of two talented people. MM: I recently heard that Mayor Teresa Jacobs of Orange County declared June 3rd Sisaundra Day, how exciting, how does it feel being welcomed home with such enthusiasm? SL: When I initially started to go away no one really knew what I was doing flying back & forth to LA because it was one of those ‘hush-hush’ situations. We were

L

sequestered for long periods of time because the show is all about the element of surprise & then to show up on television and start witnessing the amazing response from home overwhelmed me with joy! It’s just very humbling to me. From being a migrant worker to THIS. Now to start seeing everything happening, everything manifesting in my life, like Mayor Jacobs & Commissioner Scott Boyd saying Orange County wants to honor me for representing us so well nationally -what can one say? I’m left somewhat speechless. At the same time I thought: what great company to impress.

MM: Now aside from being this amazingly multi talented musician, you are also a mom, how did you handle being on the voice and being away from your family? SL: Being a mom is my first priority, and that’s one of the main reasons why I put my career on the back burner for so many years, but with the encouragement of my children, especially my daughter Rasheedah, it motivated me to move forward and pursue my career. Of course it was very difficult for me to go to the West coast and be there for 10 months off and on, but I have an incredible village of family and friends who stood by me, and said: “go ahead and do this, we’ll take care of the kids”. I could not have done it without my circle of family & friends at all. MM: What was the hardest part of being on the voice? SL: The hardest part of being on The Voice of course was being away from my children, but also the long hours. It was like an express education, an express path to fame, everything that I dreamt of since I was a little girl happened in 10 months of my life. 20 years later than what I had planned, but right on time.

MM: How did you get started as a musician, when did you know that this is what you wanted to do? SL: I knew I wanted to sing since I was a little girl. I always tell the story that my sisters had a singing group called the ‘Lewis sisters’ growing up in church, and they would not let me sing with them! I’m the youngest of eight children. My sisters would go to all of these places singing and opening up for people, and I always said: “I want to sing!” and the answer was always no! (laughs) Maybe it’s because I was younger and they were traveling. So I decided I would override that veto. I went and spoke directly to my father and I said:

L “Dad, I want to sing” so he said he would call me up to sing before he preached one Sunday. It was then that I found my voice. I was five-years-old, he called me up to sing and I was surprised because in my church (Pentecostal churches) you either can or you can’t! (laughs) It’s a Simon Cowell sort of thing. When I sang they actually clapped for me! I thought there could be something to this. From then on, I started singing more, going around the community. The more they received what I was putting out there, the more I became attached to my voice. I tell everyone that while I lived in the groves, my voice was my best friend, and for 16 years of toiling in the groves, that’s all I had. When I discovered that I did have a voice it became my best friend, and I made it my goal to get to know it, just as well as you would get to know a partner.

MM: Any favorite designers or looks this summer? SL: Favorite designers... Well you know we love all the high-end designers (laughs) On the show a lot of the pieces came from off the rack. There was BCBG, Caché, the yellow gown which I wore during one of my performances that everyone loved was actually by BCBG. I Loved it! I also love Michael Kors, Escada, Gucci and Chanel, these are the ones that make me happy and make my body look good.

Honestly, it kept pushing me to grab hold of my dream. I still believe in that letter, and of course, you have moments when you wonder if you’re ever going to get there, but when you finally do it’s like, I did it! And that’s where I am at this stage in my life. That’s why I say to people, don’t give up, be encouraged. I always tell people that if it happened to me, it can happen for you, just never stop! Keep working on it.

MM: What is a tip you’d give to aspiring artists out there? SL: The music industry is forever changing, I don’t know if there’s any specific knowledge I can give to anyone except always have I can give to anyone except always have a great attorney, always believe in yourself even when others don’t, and keep a wonderful team of people around you. A team doesn’t have to be a whole bunch of people. To me my strong team consists of about 3 people. When you face those days that you don’t know where to go, don’t know what to do, you have those people with you. I’m believer, I’m very close to God, and I pray. Having all of those elements is what has helped me to make it to this point and stay balanced. When you do finally make it, or while you’re trying to make it, it’s going to be tough. It’s going to be challenging, there are days when you’ll feel like screaming and pulling out your hair. There are days when you’ll feel like quitting; but if you have those things in your life, it will help you to keep moving forward.

“My voice was my best friend, and for 16 years of toiling in the groves, that’s all I had. When I discovered that I did have a voice it became my best friend, and I made it my goal to get to know it, just as well as you would get to know a partner.”

MM: Your journey has been such an inspiration to so many people, is there anyone who has inspired you to keep going? SL: I think the legacy that my father left is a great inspiration to me as well as my mom. They inspire me in such a huge way. My father was a Pastor, Bishop Lewis, and he also was a fruit contractor. To have both of those strong elements in my life taught me incredible work ethic; it also taught me that as tough as he was, sometimes we all have to be a little lenient when we see the passion, talent and dreams of our children. To see him come around and support me floored me. He actually second mortgaged our home to give me the tools I needed to pursue singing after he didn’t believe in me doing secular music in the first place. My Dad, he’s my greatest inspiration. We had very little, and the little that we did have he and Mom put it on the line for me to be here today . MM: Aside from a fabulous voice, you’ve got an amazing and glamorous style. What are some of your key pieces? SL: Oh my key pieces! What are my key pieces? Well I love heels, heels are everything, my earrings and I did I say I love wearing 5 inch heels! Rings, big accessories, I’m definitely an accessories girl. I love taking basic pieces and adding accessories. My stylist Troy Clinton, my friend LJ and Angie B are the people who help me to look great. They know me and they know what I love, and they help make me that person that’s ready to walk on stage and be fierce.

MM: What is up next for Sisaundra Lewis? SL: I am in the process of writing, and listening to songs to record for the new album and I’ve got lots of concerts planned. A lot of wonderful corporate events that I’m being invited to –and movies! I’ll give you that bit. I also get to go to Discovery Cove and swim the Dolphins & perform for the private unveiling of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. In addition, The Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center is having their grand opening end of year and I look forward to being a part of that huge celebration. Everyone can visit Grove2GlamMedia.com. This site has all the new dates that will be posted.

MM: Looking back on your life, did y ou ever see yourself in the place you are now? SL: Honestly I’ve always seen myself in this place. I didn’t know how I was going to get here, it took a little longer than I thought, but like I said, it’s in God’s time and now that it’s happening to me at this stage in my life I realize that I probably could not have handled it way back then. It’s perfect timing. I wrote a letter before I left high school, telling myself that I had to achieve these dreams at a certain age.

MM: What is a statement or quote that you live by? SL: “Do unto other as you would have them do unto you”. Also my friend adds that the one thing that I’m often remembered for saying is: “My plan B is my plan A!” That’s the one, that’s my quote. (laughs).

WOW BROWS Wondering what to do with your brows this summer? Sisters Dari and Gail of Wow Brows Studio may be the perfect answer! They have an efficient technique consisting of the highest quality of green organic, soft & hard wax to repair any misshaped and uneven set of brows. The sisters recently merged from their two successful studios, and opened a flagship Day Spa in the heart of Bay Harbor. The beautiful stylish chic location offers a one-stop beauty center for perfect brows, body waxing, lash/brow tint, facials, eyelash extensions, nails and permanent makeup. By: Massiel Mancebo

What inspired you to dedicate yourselves to perfecting brows? Our natural artistic talent and attention to aesthetics helped our own experience with difficult, unruly brows. We were always obsessed with perfect brows, and feel blessed that we were able to make our dream come true and help ‘Wow’ other women’s brows. What is your favorite part about what you do? Hearing the uncontrolled “WOW” by our clients after they see the results; this always excites us. What are some beauty tips you would give women? Always go to a professional eyebrow specialist for a good shape. Put yourself first, and make sure you get that monthly pampering regime no matter how busy you are. What are some of the biggest “no-no’s” for the brows? Over tweezing is on top of the list, and a magnifying mirror is not a brow friendly tool. What are some of your signature beauty methods to use in your salon? We developed our own eyebrow shaping line called ‘Brows Gone Wow’ which includes 2 unique-

-favorites: the first is the ‘tattoo brow definer’ – A fine tipped tinted pen to define the eyebrows, and fill in sparse areas for a natural full look. This is especially good for brows that are thinning out or in a growing process. The other is our Tinted Brow gel, which transforms dull brows to fuller Wow brows. It covers gray hairs, keeps hair in place, and creates a healthy looking brow. Both are waterproof – gym and water friendly. Is there a celebrity whose brows you consider perfect? There are many celebrities that are brow icons such as Megan Fox, , but our favorite of all times is Elizabeth Taylor, with her bold, thick brows accentuating her beautiful cheekbones and always brought out her stunning eyes.

What are some upcoming trends in beauty that you could tell us about? It’s all about the bold brow. Keep the brows thick with a moderate arch. What would you say to women searching for their own personal beauty style? One word: Individuality! Never follow the trends. Learn to love and enhance your own natural beauty with your favorite features.

Find out more about Wow Brows Studios at: www.wowbrows.net The studio is currently now thrilled to carry the beautiful jewelry of MMCJewelry designed by Mika Altidor.

When was the agency founded? October 2009 Tell us what readers should know about your agency. We are all about diverse ethnic backgrounds! We like a balance in the representation of the models that we provide.

Demanti O’Bryant

How many years have you been working in the industry? I actually had no previous industry or agency experience. I started in October 2009 and learned from trial/error. How did you get into scouting and developing models? When I was a freshman in college, I joined a fashion group on campus. We had a strong difference of opinion and I branched off to find students on campus that I could do fashion shows with on my own. Why did you decide to open St. Claire? I actually never wanted to open an agency. At the time, I was studying Nuclear Engineering at SC State University. I didn’t think I had time to do both. But someone said they would ease things by taking care of the business side if I took care of the fashion side. I took the company on solo shortly after.

Aleman

Where did the name come from? St. Claire is my middle name. What do you like best about your job? Scouting is like treasure hunting to me. It’s always great when you can provide an opportunity to someone that had no idea that the opportunity was there. Also, it puts a smile on their face to know someone has their back and will fight for their success. What do you like least? The industry is very shady and fake. Most of the times, it will have nothing to do with the actual potential of the person. But moreso, if the agency/client likes the persons that model is affiliated with or who he has or hasn’t shot with etc. I back each one of the models I manage 100% and that mean a lot of pushing and convincing most of the time.

How many models do you currently represent? 50 What agencies have you placed models with? ADAM NYC, BOSS NYC, FASHION Milan, MUSE NYC, Re:Quest NYC, MAJOR Milan, NEXT GLOBAL, NEXT Miami, and Photogenics LA How do you decide whether a young candidate has potential? The first thing for every model is digitals. The digitals have to speak to me when I’m looking through them. I can tell if the model is right for my vision from the unedited digitals. They may meet the model criteria and look but might not necessarily be right for my vision. What clients book consistently out of St. Claire? Hood by Air is a favorite of ours. Thanks to Kevin Amato. We also love Kithe Brewster, City of Saints, and Harare NY.

Ana Leigh

What is the “ST. Claire” look? And how is it different (or not) than other agencies? The St. Claire look is both editorial and commercial. For example, with black models I would usually scout someone that is more of the clean look that can have crossover appeal in commercial and fashion. I never look for the “cookie cutter” model. When I scout a blonde-haired, blue-eyed model, I try my best to make sure they’d stand out amongst the many i.e. Brandon, Jackson, Oskar, Vlad Z. Then I have the ones that have a carved niche for themselves like Brian, which is albino, or Kendall with his wild dreadlocks. Does a model have to live in New York to be represented by you? No, we work with models throughout the world but would prefer them to be in the US for the development process. The international models were found while visiting New York for school or vacation. 100

Tell us something that most people don’t know about your work/modeling/ fashion industry. Most people don’t know that I had no prior experience… that I’m from South Carolina and have only lived in New York for a year… that I’m only 23 years old…and that I scout 90% of my models from off of the streets, malls, and schools. How can a model apply to St. Claire? You can send an email to demantio@ gmail.com with clear, simple, and unedited digitals/polaroids and your measurements. We are a fashion model mother agency but we are open to reviewing both plus and fitness models. Height requirement is 5’8-6’0 for women and 6’0-6’4 for men.

Jackson

Who are your most successful models and why are they so sought after? Everyone loves Ana Leigh, Brandon, Jackson, Quavis, and Tian Li! Brian, Kendall, and Stephon are sought after because of their distinguished looks. I believe that Anna, Briar, Cara, Deven, Evan, Oskar, and many more are also on the rise as ones who will be in demand. You work with a lot of photographers, Who are your favorite fashion photographers? Tim Walker is probably my favorite because I love his fairy tale like shoots. Mert/Marcus and Steven Klein are also favorites. The photographers that my agency is growing fond of working with are Kristopher Armstead, TAZACA, and Timothy Rosado.

ENLIGHTENMENT THE RICH & ECCLECTIC WORLD OF ANUSHKA MENON India’s most promising fashion photographer

Through her fashion photography Anushka Menon opens our eyes to a seductive and delightful world. A cross between the rich fabrics and Asian beauties reminiscent of 1001 Nights, and the vibrant colors and florals of Frida Kahlo to a more contemporary digital world with figures of femme fatale, her work blurs boundaries of style and becomes a blend of urban ethnic gorgeousness. Powerful yet feminine beyond belief, Anushka’s polished and flawless artistic style shows impeccable attention to detail and the highest degree of perfection in photographic direction and practice. The resulting images are as exquisite as a delectable fruit. Of Indian descent, Anushka Menon was raised in Muscat, Oman, where she completed high school. Her photography education began in 2002 when she moved to Australia and studied Art Design and Communication at RMIT Melbourne after which she decided to focus entirely on photography.

Anushka then moved to India and completed a 2 year photography course in Delhi. She started working as a professional photographer in 2004 and has now become one of India’s most coveted (and youngest female) photographers in the beauty & fashion industry, working for prestigious clients like Rolex, L’Oreal, Revlon, Puma and with work featured in editorials for Vogue and Bazaar India, as well as Elle and Marie-Claire. She was crowned Fashion Photographer of the Year at the Marie Claire Fashion Awards 2011; rated one of the top six young emerging photographers in 2007 by The Fuji Film Company; and received the Award for Excellence at the “NOKIA EYE ON FASHION” contest 2006 for the best New Photographer in a professional category.

Article by Josh Garrick Photos by Harry Wilkins The best way to KNOW you are going to get great food is to find a restaurant where the CHEF is also the owner. Such is the case with the wonderful-in-every-way FRANCESCO’S in Maitland. Named for the Owner Francesco Aiello, who comes to us from Palermo, Sicily. The restaurant is truly his passion. Chef is there from 9 am to late each evening, overseeing a staff that obviously adores him. And I adore every thing I tasted from this extensive and very Italian menu. Francesco’s love of cooking began in his early years by watching his father cook at their home in Sicily, so it was a natural progression for him to attend the Instituto Alberghiero culinary school in Palermo. Fortunately for us, he specialized in fish, seafood, and risotto.

The restaurant’s design accomplishes the impossible by adding to the fine dining experience, while making diners feel comfortable enough to bring the whole family. The ‘look’ is pure Italy with high ceilings, massive beams, whitened brick walls, dark wood, and a mix of chandeliers that range from copper buckets to drop crystal. Seating is a choice between booths, tables and an open kitchen with bar seating that places you within inches from all that is happening in the kitchen. The winning appetizer is Gamberoni Siciliana – beautiful fresh shrimp in a perfect cream sauce of olive-oil, garlic, capers, cherry tomatoes and cognac, and this appetizer does double-duty when you use the fantastic sauce for dipping. An eggplant lover, I was delighted with the Melanzane Parmigiana – sliced eggplant baked to perfection with mozzarella,

tomato and basil (and NO breading). Glory hallelujah. The pastas are fun here, not only because they are made fresh, by hand, in-house (freshness DOES make a difference, even in pasta), but also because guests are invited to choose their own pasta and our own sauce (6 choices). I chose a heavenly blend of linguine with little neck clams and experienced Chef Francesco’s ARTISTRY as the linguine was perfectly al dente but also infused throughout with the taste of the clams. Because Francesco is known for fish, we tried the Salmon Bruschetta, which, as its name implies, covers a lovely piece of salmon with the classic appetizer ingredients of tomatoes, basil, garlic, and a reduction of balsamic vinegar. Both delicious and light, the portion was fortunately large enough to share. Pizzas are well represented, and the restaurant does an enviable business of take-out pizzas – baked in front of you – in a traditional wood-burning oven. Francesco has imported his Father and Mother to create ALL of the desserts by hand, and the menu proudly states the “pastries are freshly and exquisitely baked in house.” And they are – fresh and exquisite. Francesco’s is at 400 S. Orlando Ave Maitland, Florida. Take out and catering available. Call 407.960.5533

The Cassata al Forno is a magnificent creation of cake stuffed with ricotta and chocolate chips and ‘decorated’ with cinnamon. The Cannoli, with their lovingly made-byhand pastry shells, are stuffed with ricotta and chocolate chips, and the gelato (ice cream) is so fresh that it is served as a flavor of the day. Each bite of dessert is to be treasured for all the love that has been brought to our little slice of Paradise from the Old Country.

As Francesco’s approaches its 2nd anniversary, it continues it’s combination of a fine dining experience with an affordable family menu, a clear winner for every occasion from a romantic dinner for two to large corporate events. It also comes with my highest recommendation. Mangia! -JG

To Juice or NOT To Juice TONY • CPT - Edge of Fitness

The juice craze or ‘Juicing’ – as some people call it has become all the rage in the past few years all around the world. Some advocates tout the practice of juicing as a way to overall better health and longevity since your able to consume more fruit and veggies in bulk this way then by eating the whole fruit. I’ve even heard the term ‘Extreme Juicing’ being used by some in my field (both Trainers and their clients) as some magical and elusive ‘cure-all’ for a variety of things. I’ve also heard claims that the body can absorb more nutrients this way then by eating the entire fruit allegedly b/c the fiber prevents all 100% of the good stuff from being used by us, although there’s not much scientific data to back this up. In this article I’m going to give a brief history of juicing and give you the skinny on juicing, both the Pros and the Cons, so you can determine if it’s right for you. The origins of juicing can be traced back to around the time of the Greeks in 1700 B.C. when they referred to the juice of the Pomegranate as a ‘love 112

potion’, to the Dead Sea Scrolls in about 70 A.D. where they called it, “ A pounded mash of pomegranate and fig” resulted in, “Profound strength and subtle form.” Most juicing experts agree that in the current form we’ve come to know it began with Max Gerson, a German scientist who allegedly developed his own therapy including the raw juices and a vegetarian diet. The main debate raging in the juicing community nowadays is to whether to get one with a high-speed blade or a masticating cold press, which is allegedly healthier (and sometimes more expensive). I began my journey into juicing this past Christmas after doing a ton of research online and by asking around at my local health food store before asking my Mom to get one for me as the ‘Big Gift’ under the tree. One of my friends also had been telling me about the documentary ‘Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead’ that was a “must-watch” on Netflix. I originally was more of a traditionalist and preferred to eat the

whole fruits and veggies rather than spending what I thought was a huge amount of time prepping and juicing the fruit. I also vividly remember those commercials I’d seen as a kid that featured Jack Lalanne peddling his juicer to the masses on TV that were later parodied by comedian Jim Carrey (Jack lived to the age of 96 which isn’t bad considering that the average life expectancy for men in the U.S in 2014 76 yrs). One of the many advantages to juicing (especially if you’re a picky eater as I used to be) is that you can mix in some fruits such as apples, oranges, grapefruits with the veggies that you don’t particularly care for. In my case I’m not a huge fan of beets, kale, chard, or ginger but have learned to like them not only when I juice but when I prepare them in a salad as well. Another upside to using a juicer to extract all that juice is that you can consume more then you could if you were to eat all of the raw whole foods by themselves. I personally put in 3-4 small handfuls of spinach in one

of my morning recipes, which I don’t think I’d be able to eat right after rolling out of bed and getting dressed. A lot of the juicing ‘gurus’ also promote the various juice cleanses to help your body rid itself of the buildup of chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, hormones, etc. that are present in the food and they say can harm our bodies in the long term. Again there’s not much research to back this claim up either. I’ve also had some folks and even other people in the health food industry telling me that, “They get all their meals and everything they need from juicing,” and this is where I have to vehemently

disagree. There’s absolutely no substitute for getting the amount of nutrients especially fiber from eating the entire veggie and/or fruit. Also according to Dr. Oz’s website, “if you decide to pursue a diet that consists predominantly of juice, like a cleanse, make sure you consume at least 2,000 or more calories per day depending on your needs and not to starve yourself. Its important that your body gets a sufficient amount of calories, vitamins, nutrients, protein fat and carbohydrates.” Whether it’s a fad or here to stay as a long term health trend make sure you consult your doctor or nutritionist and do your own research before embarking on any radical changes to your dietary regimen. Stay healthy and see you soon! Tonyedgefitness@yahoo.com

OIL PAINTINGS WITH A GRAPHIC TOUCH: CARLOS OVIEDO’S ICONS

MULTIKATE

C

arlos Oviedo’s colorful artworks are a dynamic mix of shapes, abundant colors, impeccable realist techniques and long hours of work. In speaking about his 361° series shown here, Oviedo explains: “360° completes a circle. 361° is an art journey”: the result of the artist’s analysis and exploration of the techniques he once set out to master.

114

While his grid-based paintings are inspired by Piet Mondrian’s 1930s geometric Compositions, his work most certainly harkens back to Pop Art, with its bold colors, graphic lines and imagery reminiscent of Warhol. Due to the core graphic properties of each piece the result is incredibly eye-catching.

Exploring the limits of realistic representation, Oviedo’s 361° series is an artistic discourse on the irony of the processed image in a world of duplication, retouching and photoshop; and in a North American Art Market saturated with Warholian prints. Yet Oviedo’s technique also brings an interesting and important twist: the introduction of a most noble and notoriously difficult medium: Oil Painting. He uses Old Master Ingres’ “Grisaille” technique (oil painting in shades of grey) in order to achieve a high degree of Realism, recalling the look of vintage Sepia photography. A return to a classic technique pushed to the highest degree of perfection, Oviedo’s paintings are delicate masterful originals.

Conceptually his work can be described as a study of social icons and celebrity culture. It is an exploration of icons so powerful yet so fragile at the same time. The fragility of these idols in popular culture is represented here in many ways. Elvis is shattered like a mirror. Michael Jackson bathes in the balmy light of his tender years. Forever young. Johnny Depp and Kate Moss have many facets: some hidden, some exposed, some fake and some real, some implied and some imagined. Oviedo’s lines create shapes that break up the image in pieces, which become reflectors of these social icons.

Oviedo’s 361° series is an artistic discourse on the irony of the processed image in a world of duplication, retouching and Photoshop.

These reflectors recall the media surrounding celebrities, the paparazzi, the flashes, the photos by the million. They also challenge the representation of self and identity of celebrities, and the many public faces they bear. Marilyn seems to be asking: “Am I real? Is this one more of me?”.

nyone who has ever visited the famous Victoria & Albert Museum of London knows they can expect to see breathtaking and rare exhibitions. These exhibitions are full of once-lost treasures and masterful works of art from all corners of the world. The V&A Museum never holds back when presenting and showcasing each and every gallery. Upon entering their newest exhibition, ‘The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014,’ you are immediately enveloped in a feeling of couture decadence and beautiful nostalgia from vintage fashions past. This first-of-its-kind showcase takes you from the humble beginnings of Italian fashion, to its world-renowned popularity and resonance today. Even the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, said “He felt like he was in Florence” as he walked through the exhibition.

Interview by Kyle James

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014 exhibition is storytelling brilliance, which effectively narrates the changing international perception of Italian style. It all began with the historical ‘Sala Bianca’ catwalk shows that took place in Florence during the early 1950s. New American buyers helped to fuel the emerging market, thrusting the Italian fashion scene onto the world stage. These debut catwalk shows, organized by Giovanni Battista Giorgini, showcased the country’s greatest designs in a very big way. With Italian designers now fully breaking out of their shells and into the rest of the world, there was not only an alternative to Paris fashions, but also a bright new competitor. “If the American buyers hadn’t come, there wouldn’t be an Italian fashion market today,” says Sonnet Stanfill, curator of the exhibition. LaPalme Magazine had the privilege of being able to meet and interview Sonnet, the radiant mind behind the Glamour of Italian Fashion. She is curator of 20th-century and contemporary fashion at the V&A, where she has worked since 1999.

S

onnet Stanfil’s previous exhibitions include Ball gowns: British Glamour Since 1950 (V&A, 2012), the Ossie Clark display (V&A, 2003), and New York Fashion Now (V&A, 2007)—a display featuring the work of a new generation of New York-based designers.

The dress is covered in silver sequins, a very elegant, glamorous evening gown that is still modern and wearable today.

Before joining the Museum, Sonnet worked as a fashion buyer in New York. LaPalme Magazine Could you elaborate on the curation process for this particular exhibition?

Sonnet “Absolutely, It sums up some of the best of Italian style.”

Sonnet Well the curation process has involved two years of full-time work, where I’ve stepped aside from my normal job and focused solely on delivering the show and also the provocation that goes alongside it. I’ve worked with over 30 archives both in Italy and beyond to source the material for the show. Even though half of the content is from the V&A, the remainders are loans and gifts from fashion house archives and museums. It’s really a bit like Truffle hunting. Sourcing this material has been a wonderful challenge that’s involved a lot of travel and a lot of meetings and conversations. So that’s been the main focus—to go through all these archives and choose all the pieces that help tell the story that we wanted to tell.

LaPalme Magazine “Kind of a good reflection of the shift to Italian fashion.”

LaPalme Magazine If you could add one Italian designer to the exhibition, who would it be and why? Sonnet That’s hard. If I could add designers to the exhibition, what I would love to be able to do is to include more young talent. We have been able to include a few designers who are early on in their career, but only a handful. I am wearing Fausto Puglisi who has only been designing for a couple of years under his own label. He’s in good company. There’s a lot of good young talent in Italy, but it’s hard to break through; fashion is such a difficult industry. If I had double the space, I would have loved to include a lot more designers who are just in the beginnings of their careers.

LaPalme Magazine Which pieces from the collection really stand out to you the most, and why? Sonnet One of the key pieces in our collection is actually from the V&A’s own collection, and we’re absolutely delighted to be able to show a gown that was worn by Princess Lee Radziwill, who is the sister of Jacqueline Kennedy. The Milan Couture House, Mila Schön, designed it, and Lee Radziwill wore it in 1966 to Truman Capote’s ‘Black and White Ball’ in New York. What’s so interesting to me about that is, here is a woman who is known for her French couture wardrobe, and she chose to wear an Italian dress for what was arguably the party of the decade.

Ankle boots designed by DG

LaPalme Magazine How long did it take to completely set up the collection? Sonnet I have been working on the exhibition essentially for five years. I traveled to Milan five years ago to solicit the first gifts from fashion houses with this exhibition in mind. I have been working on it full-time for the past two years, and really just focusing on delivering the show. LaPalme Magazine Who in your opinion has established Italy’s reputation for fashion above all else? Sonnet I think that there are many important protagonists in the story. It’s difficult to choose one. But, I have to point to the figure of Giovanni Battista Giorgini. If Christian Dior was credited with reviving and rejuvenating the couture industry in Paris at the war’s end, then a similar credit has to be given to Giorgini for doing the same for Italy. As you pass through the exhibition, you’ll see and experience 70 years of incredible history in the 100 garments on display. Dancing alongside, on the gallery’s walls, are larger-than-life projections of Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Ingrid Bergman—the iconic actresses who helped Hollywood and the rest of the world fall in love with Italy and Italian couture fashion. You’ll learn how ‘Made In Italy’ became an international promotional campaign that highlighted all the best and finest Italian goods—including cinema, art, food, tourism, design, and most of all, fashion. The campaign helped the rest of the world embrace Italy with open arms, and made us crave more and more of the excellent and unique quality of goods, and good fashion that Italy continues to serve up today. Decadence, beauty, detail, innovative design and class have made Italian couture stand out for over 70 years. From humble beginnings to worldwide acclaim, the Italian fashion industry will continue to awe the world with its stunning brilliance, all while keeping its glamorous past an integral part of its present.
