CREATIVE DIRECTOR DEAR GENTLEMEN, More and more men are looking to take care of themselves and we are here to help! Being our September issue we are packed with tips, tricks and advice on all things guy style. We have the hottest accessories, the newest shaving items and even what to bring on your transcontinental flights with British Airways. Whether you are flying first class or coasting in coach we have the freshest gear to impress your ladies or even your bromance. The guy most likely to be anyone’s man-crush is the star of LAPALME’S September cover, Jerry Oconnell. Jerry starred in Stand by Me and has had a vast film and television career ever since. Personally, I have been a fan for years and our time working together solidified my respect for him as artist and human. We had an amazing time working together. His style is usually pretty straightforward and uncomplicated so, I wanted to take that version of him into a more sophisticated direction. What I loved about Jerry is that he walked in, took his keys out of his pocket and said, “ok, I’m all yours. Make me into something”. Those are my favorite subjects. Jerry is so comfortable with who he is, he was game for anything. We had a great time and I am really looking forward to his new role on Fox’s Scream Queens this fall. Since we are helping you pack and look good this fall, we also have the perfect destination to test our your new look , Malta. I was recently hosted by the Maltese travel bureau (www.visitmalta.com) along with British airways and the Corinthia Palace Hotel. It was one of the most amazing trips of my life. It is every guy’s dream destination. If you are a history geek, you will be busy touring for days, discovering the island whose history pre-dates back to 5200 BCE. I was particularly moved by the megalithic Ġgantija temples on Gozo, which pre-date the pyramids of Eygpt. If you’re a movie buff you will certainly recognize the settings of films like Troy, Alexander, Count of Montecristo, Gladiator and even the show Game of Thrones, which is filmed off the coast. Don’t miss our report on Malta and make it your next destination vacation like I did.

BAXTER LIFE CONTEMPORARY DESIGN MEETS TRADITIONAL QUALITY

Synonymous with quality, high specialization, differentiation and elegance the “made in Italy” label represents value and is arguably the highest standard for which fashion, automobile, food and furniture goods are held. It is a “value that must be preserved, cared for, fed and raised” says Mr. Paolo Bestetti, CEO of Baxter, Italian furniture brand. Baxter is widely known throughout Europe and Asia as masters in leather craftsmanship, offering contemporary and unique designs in furniture and lighting. However widely known abroad, the contemporary luxury line has just recently hit American soil with their brick and mortar location in Miami. The distinguishing and main feature for Baxter is the “peculiar attention dedicated to the strong bond that sets in between the material and artist”. It’s according to this relationship that Baxter’s designers are selected. “While Baxter’s designs and vision are contemporary, their tenacity to traditional materials, quality standards, and leather works are the underlying factors of the brands success.” The main ingredient in all of Baxter’s work with leathers is diligent and scrupulous research.

18

With their flagship store in the heart of Milan you can expect nothing but the latest in contemporary interior design and the highest quality in leather goods. “From the very beginning of Baxter’s birth” says Mr. Besetti, “our aim has always been to concentrate on quality and on the uniqueness of the products; these are primary characteristics of our work, which have eventually allowed us to reach a unique position in the contemporary design world. Our choice was to focus and specialize in a specific field, where we have concentrated our researchers, our efforts, and all our attention” How do you select the designers that design for Baxter? The distinguishing and main feature for Baxter is the peculiar attention dedicated to the strong bond that sets in between material and artist. It’s just according to this relationship that our designers are chosen. These designers experiment, transform and enhance a unique raw material of reference to create recognizable products of excellent quality. In time we have managed to form a unique and global style, built onto a strong basis of primary relationships with prestigious designers. What interests us is to stake on the quality of our products and that the designer applies himself in this sense. Each designer, actually, has a gestation phase, during which he has the chance to learn and understand all that characterizes the Baxter world. What is Baxter known for? From the beginning of Baxter’s birth, our aim has always been to concentrate on quality and uniqueness of the products; these are primary characteristics of our work,

19

which have eventually allowed us to reach a unique position in the contemporary design world. Our choice was to focus and specialize in a specific field, where we have concentrated our research, our efforts, and all our attention. The main “mustâ€? of all our work is the careful and scrupulous research among leathers which were born from a tanning process, characterized by ancient recipes, that respect and preserve all leather original features. Every single Baxter product is immediately recognizable thanks to the great leather quality. The leather which is used to produce our articles is a wonderful material which changes and gets discovered day by day, by giving an enthralling 360° experience to people who get into contact with it. What are the must-have pieces for furnishing a bachelor pad? If I imagine a bachelor pad, I immediately think of the house of one friend of mine who lives in Budapest. It is a very beautiful house for sure, where I recognize four main features. The first one is a big print by Helmut Newton that covers a whole huge wall. The second one is a concrete kitchen for entertaining. It forms together with living- and dining room, one big convivial open-space. The third feature is about a visual effect: it seems like there is a big aquarium from the living-room to the bedroom. Actually, this space is completely made up of big glass windows that form one open-space to be lived freely, with no barriers. And finally, the last feature is the domotic system, where light and music merge.

As a Italian brand that is popular worldwide how do you keep your aesthetics and design so global? Today “Made in Italy” represents a value; a value that must be preserved, cared for, fed and raised. In a world where almost everything is possible, our aim is being able to maintain a strong focus on the quality of our products. Products that have international significance, which have characteristics of “uniqueness” and allow us to belong to a small niche that for specialization and craftsmanship, stands out on the global market. What we have always done, is tried to industrialize a craft project, producing several sofas but one at a time, paying on the single products the attention deserved. Baxter’s style expresses itself through freedom; the secret lies in the ability of mixing different styles and materials with equilibrium and over-refinement. It has never been extreme, on the contrary, it always tries to reinterpret classicism from a modern point of view. In this way, the pieces that are part of our collections are unique products, born from the combination among tradition, the needs of the consumers and the wish to always propose something personal and absolutely recognizable. . www.baxter.it

3 Spirits you never knew to use this season

Lick those lips as the sun beats down on you begging you to quench that thirst of yours and prepare you for a change in weather, and this time? Be ready to welcome a whole new level of seduction with cocktails you might never had considered. Sure, fall means a lot of things. It means making a mad dash to the gym to tighten up what you can before it’s time for all of those holiday parties just around the corner, it means pulling out that sweater collection that’s been in hiding, and it means that you’re about to eat some of the most flavorful fare and drink some of the tastiest, flavor forward cocktails imaginable. So … rather than the same ole same ole, there are three spirits you have to dive into this season.

You don’t have to be a mixologist to step up your Mad Men cocktail-making game but why not make em’ wonder if you secretly are Don Draper?! After a tasting exploration, we chose three spirits that not only surprised us but totally changed the way we looked at liquor. Hailing from three very different countries, China, Mexico and Ireland, we fell in love. Two of them may be completely new to you and one is just a saucy play on a bar staple: Baijiu, Irish Poitin, and jalapeño-infused Mezcal. Reaching out to some of our favorite mixologists and distillers in the business, we wanted to learn as much as we could to share the story, some tasty recipes, and a few insights into just why these three spirits make fall so alluring!

BAIJIU

Becoming a unifier through the class systems in feudal China, this earthy spirit not only holds the torch to Chinese history, it also happens to be a rather mysterious invitation to explore the core of happy consumption in the region. Hailed China’s chosen spirit, baijiu represents distinction and bold taste. As it stands, there is one modern day supplier responsible for distilling over 500 tons of baijiu a year. The distiller? Guotai Baijiu. Distilled in Maotai Town for over 200 years, this modern distillery produces one of the tastiest baijiu’s. Considering the warm intoxication of summer, here’s a baijiu cocktail to soothe your taste buds. Our friends, the Houston Bros. from Houston Hospitality in Los Angeles, Mark and Johnnie, gave us their take on this Asian-inspired spirit: “It’ s the first spirit that we’ ve had since trying Mezcal that completely blew us away with how different it was. Its earthiness and funk make cocktails with really intense layers. Also, being part Chinese, it’ s close to our hearts.” Large CHEST .75 baijiu (Shui Jing Fang – or – Guotai) .75 clear creek douglas fir eau de vie .5 yellow chartreuse/ .5 giffard crème d’abricot .75 lime 7 drops bittermens elemakule tiki bitters mix together and serve cold

23

JALAPEÑO INFUSED MEZCAL Lastly, Mezcal may not be the newest thing you’ve heard of or even a rarity in your favorite bar but it is one of the purest Mexican spirits around and this time, we wanted to invite you to get a whole lot spicier by using a jalapeno infused Mezcal. Everything tastes better with a little fire so why not tap into that desire by kicking up the heat as fall rolls in? Much like the tale from a telenovela, Mezcal has a long standing history in the region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Made from the agave plant and known to be the cure for all ills, it’s rustic flavor of smoky, dried fruits and fresh fennel, it lends a level of complexity whether you drink it as a shot or marry it with exotic flavors. While there are at least half a dozen brands of Mezcal that are worthy of mention, we set our sights on a spicy infusion made with one of our staples: El Silence Mezcal. An artisanal Mezcal hand crafted in San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca by Master Mezcalier Pedro Hernández, a ninth-generation “Maestro Mezcalero”, El Silencio is a Mezcal with a whole lot of story. We wanted to find out what Mixologist, Marcus Tello had to say about infusing Mezcal with jalapeno at home and coming up with an autumn cocktail that will remind you of summer. “The smoky nature of Mezcal always reminds of summer, whether that be bonfires of campfires. Plus the added “spicy” dynamic from the jalapeno gives a boost that balances the sweet and sour elements in any cooling summer cocktail.” PASSIONFLOWER 1.5oz. Jalapeño-infused Mezcal El Silencio Espadin* .75oz. Orange Curacao (use a quality one like Pierre Ferrand or Grand Marnier) .75oz. Passionfruit Syrup (equal parts passionfruit purée and sugar in the raw, stir until dissolved) .75oz. Fresh Lime Juice Combine all ingredients in a mixing vessel with ice, shake vigorously for 10 seconds, and strain over ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with a half-passionfruit and lime flower (or if not feeling crafty, then just a lime wedge). *Jalapeño-infused Mezcal El Silencio Espadin: Combine 1 bottle of El Silencio Espadin Mezcal into with 1/2 jalapeño chopped in a non-reactive container like a large mason jar and let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Strain completely using cheesecloth and re-bottle into empty El Silencio bottle. 7 drops bittermens elemakule tiki bitters mix together and serve cold

24

IRISH POITIN If you can imagine the crisp clean air of Ireland finding it’s way to your senses with remnants of fresh green fields, uncompromised natural undertones of grain, sugar beets, and potato, that is Irish Poitin. Known as the oldest spirit in the world, first distilled by Irish Monks as far back as the 6th Century. Derived from the Irish word for a pot ‘pota’, with the ‘ín’ added to emphasize it’s traditionally small size, poitin really is quite the playful drink. Let’s just say the Irish have the win on prohibition stories. Back in 1779, with no watering holes to frequent or bars to serve their thirst, one man – a legend if you will – an outlaw, Michael Mooney disguised himself as a fruit and vegetable trader. Fresh batches of poitin ready for consumption, Mooney would let the locals know barrels were ready for drinking by walking down the street and tipping his bowler hat to the side. Mooney was fearless and always on the run and thus was associated with the term, Mad as a March Hare. This is a newer libation and it’s about to take hold of your thirst. We had the pleasure of tasting this refined Irish spirit and our take? It’s beautiful! Absent of that fiery finish you’d expect from typical Irish drink, this is one that tastes perfect “neat”, and exquisite in an inventive libation. So, we decided to give you a recipe for the crisp and bright Mad March Hare Sour. You’re welcome. The SOUR 40ml Mad March Hare 20ml St Germain Elderflower 20ml Fresh Lemon 10ml Egg White 5ml Sugar Syrup Shake all ingredients with ice and strain over cubed ice in glass. Can be served up or on the rocks.

And so, summer may be gone but we wanted to be sure fall was making it’s way to you, in liquid form, with something totally different. CHEERS!

Former executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, and a Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance judge for twenty-five years, Ken Gross has been the guest curator for seven critically acclaimed exhibitions of significant automobiles in fine art museums across the United States. Along with those exhibitions’ catalogs, his books include Hot Rods and Custom Cars: Los Angeles and The Dry Lakes; Art of the Hot Rod; Hot Rod Milestones; The Illustrated BMW Buyer’s Guide; and Ferrari 250GT SWB. The author of Behind the Headlights, an acclaimed SPEED/TV series, Gross also co-wrote Rockin’ Garages with Tom Cotter. He’s a recipient of the Automotive Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Citation, the Ken Purdy Award, and the Lee Lacocca Award. In Vintage Cars—the new, 168-page tome from Assouline has curated more than 100 sultry color and black-and-white images of coveted collectibles made between World War I and the early 1960s. The stylishly cinematic shots from notable French photographer Laziz Hamani are more poetic than informational, eschewing captions lest text interrupt the gawking experience. Casting a car’s most precious details—A Ferrari decal, a baby blue–leather dashboard, a Bentley grill—in a soft spotlight, Hamani’s car porn isn’t just for vintage vehicle connoisseurs. Anyone who has an appreciation for good design and gorgeous photography will be drawn to his visual treats, like the two-page spread of a black-and-blue Bugatti, an up-close, study of a black-and-white Firestone tire and a side-angle portrait of a red-and-white two-door Corvette.

“Looked at today, vintage cars are quintessentially tactile, with their elegant fittings, lacquered wood and faintly aromatic real leather, artfully crafted long ago by skilled hands,” writes Kenneth Gross, the former executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles and author of several books on cars including Hot Rods and Custom Cars: Los Angeles and The Dry Lakes, in his romantic introduction. And while nothing compares to seeing these creations up close and in person, these pages let you study a car’s features for as long as you like—before it zips away, out of sight.

Vintage cars are survivors of a kinder, simpler, less litigious time.

There’s something about an old car that evokes an emotional response from nearly everyone who sees it. — Ken Gross

JERRY O’CON

NNELL THE SMILE YOU LOVE TO WATCH

Interview by:

DAWN GARCIA

Jerry O’Connell is one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces. His big smile, his thick hair, expressive eyebrows but most of all, his sheer genuineness. With a plethora of new projects on the rise: a movie, a mockumentary series, directing, being the voice of Superman, his appearances on Billions, Mistresses (he’s also directed two episodes) and his newly announced role on Season 2 of Scream Queens (working with Ryan Murphy, a man he’s wanted to work with since the early days of Nip/Tuck), he also happens to be a devoted husband to wife, Rebecca Romijn and father to their twin daughters, Dolly and Charlie. Growing up in Chelsea, New York to a mom and dad heavily steeped in the art world in some form or fashion, he and his brother were surrounded with creativity and an environment that fostered their individuality. All of which made him the “go with the flow” kind of guy he is today. Jerry’s first big Hollywood break was in Rob Reiner’s “Stand By Me”, which just celebrated it’s 30-year anniversary! An experience, he’ll tell us, that shaped him as an actor and director. Now that he’s landed roles on so many phenomenal shows, we wanted to get a little personal. LAPALME MAGAZINE: Growing up with parents steeped in art, do you think their creative approach influenced your acting? JERRY O’CONNELL: It was the 80’s and Chelsea was Bohemian New York! Everyone around me were Warhol-like characters, we lived in an artist’s loft in an artist community at the Chelsea Hotel so I was surrounded with amazing people all the time. When I was a kid, I went to Clinton School for Writers & Artists and the Herbert Berghof Studio for acting, which was a really open environment. It was a lot of fun. As a kid, we lived right where the Halloween parade would begin so every year, everyone in my building would wear crazy costumes. It was just a really cool place to grow up! LM: With the film Stand By Me recently celebrating it’s 30 year-anniversary, what was that experience like now that you look back on it? Is there anything you would want to do that would be a take on that? JOC: It’s funny, I was on twitter and the whole idea that “Stand By Me” was 30 years ago, it’s crazy that it’s been that long – I’m gonna be in a

32

walker soon! I still can’t believe I got to be a part of that. There were some big people in that movie. I mean Corey Feldman had just done Goonies and I couldn’t believe I was doing a movie with him and Kiefer Sutherland. It was amazing – now I watch it and still am so glad I got to be a part of it and that I got to work with River too, makes me sad to think about him. Working with Rob Reiner was the best though. Seriously, he was like one of our friends. Every day I got to work with a bunch of my friends and learn and grow and see the way he did things. It taught me a lot and now, makes me want to direct and work more with kids. LM: Speaking of working with kids, you have an ABC movie coming out, “Mermaid’s Tale”. JOC: Yeah, I get to work with kids in the film! It was a lot of fun. I remember being young, working on a big movie with a director that made it a positive experience and that’s what I wanted to bring to this movie. I was so happy to be involved and hopefully be a part of creating good memories that these kids will always remember. LM: Ok, let’s talk about the 5th Quarter! A mockumentary series reprising your role as football player Frank Cushman from Jerry McGuire. What do we have to look forward to from this untrue made up sports series? JOC: Streaming this year on Verizon Go90, 5th Quarter is a crazy fun concept. I have to say that it’s such an exciting time for TV now. All these young filmmakers are creating really funny material in short format for online content. It’s where so much talent comes from and super funny concepts begin. Ok, so my character, Frank Cushman, now a successful football player, is addicted to product endorsements. He does these 30 for 30 dramatic sports segments plus commercial after ridiculous commercial. It will be highly entertaining to watch. LM: You play the role of Steven Birch on Showtime’s, “Billions”. Any chance we’ll get to see him get back at US Attorney Chuck Rhoades? JOC: I really hope so! When you’re in a scene with Paul Giamatti and Damien Lewis, there is no higher rung in the acting circle. It just doesn’t exist, it’s an honor to be there with both of them. When you’re on set, you speak when spoken to, you can’t believe you’re there. It’s true greatness. I hope I’m back next season!

LM: You are also on Season 2 of “Scream Queens”! Can you tell us about the character you play? JOC: I finally got in! A real testament that you stick around long enough, they put you in something. I’ve been such a Ryan Murphy fan since he started. I’ve auditioned for years and pursued jobs on his shows but nothing ever stuck until this role came along. Finally, Brad Falchuck cast me and now I’m working with two guys I’ve always wanted to work with! They do things old school. You have to pick up the scripts just prior to shooting so we are in as much anticipation as the fans. The whole cast and crew are the coolest, plus they all actually look cool too! LM: We loved seeing you Guest Host with Kelly Ripa. Ever want to add Talk Show Host to your repertoire in the future? JOC: I would do anything Kelly asks. She is the sweetest. I aspire to be like her as a parent and have you seen her kids? The are most attractive, best looking kids around! I loved hosting with her. I’m in awe of her, she has it all figured out as a parent. It’s incredible to see how she’s found balance with career, marriage and parenthood. LM: Tell us something about you most people don’t know? JOC: At my best, I was ranked 17th in the US for NYU at the NCAA Saber Fencing Tournament when I was in college. Had I really stuck with it, saber fencing, I probably would have made it pretty far. I still talk to my coach, who happens to be US Olympian, Steve Mormando. It was an experience I’ll never forget. I really enjoyed being part of a team, traveling the world, and competing. And then, I fell in love with acting … LM: How has your experience been directing “Mistresses”? JOC: Initially I met with John Scott, he’s a prolific TV Director and I shadowed him on that show first. So when it came time to direct two episodes with Jun Yin? I was ready. She’s so much fun to direct! She’s so huge as an actress but still innocent and her characters are always embroiled in crazy situations. She’s always game, even when we’d change stuff up on her. It’s a blast directing, acting and working with the entire cast!

LM: Best advice you’ve been given in the business? JOC: Crazy long story; when I was in Stand By Me, first day on set, I was in a scene and I wasn’t really reacting to it, Reiner said, “CUT! Why aren’t you reacting to it?” I told him I didn’t really feel like I was part of the scene because I didn’t have any lines. Reiner explained to the 11 year-old version of me, “You’re as much a part of this as anyone else, you gotta listen to every word.” When you work in TV in an ensemble and you don’t say anything, sometimes it’s your best work if you do it right because like Reiner said, you gotta listen to all of it, to everyone. LM: Lastly, you are married to the exquisite Rebecca Romin and have two twin girls. What is one of your favorite things to do together as a family? JOC: Well, one thing is my kids have gotten good at is eating out. They’re well mannered and super polite. Nothing makes me prouder then when someone says, your kids have great manners. The other thing I love is we go Karaoke as a family. LM: What’s your go-to song? JOC: My kids sing Bieber, “Sorry” and stuff like that, I can sing a little Steely Dan, but Rebecca can rock the Eagles song, “Hotel California”. Honestly, I’m along for the ride, putting in songs to watch my girls have fun singing. I will say that I have a resolution: I want to travel with my family more, let them to see the world. And we can’t wait to see the pics of your adventures on Instagram! You can catch Jerry this fall on ABC, FOX, Verizon Go90, hopefully hosting a few more shows with Kelly, directing, writing, you name it. The man does it all. You won’t meet a nicer guy and we loved getting to know more about him. IG + Twitter @mrjerryoc

PURE ELEGANCE THE PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE

written and photography by

KEVIN LAPALME

From a 1923 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Pall Mall to the 2017 Vision Mercedes Maybach 6 Concept Coupe one thing rings clear, these are some impressiveprecision performance vehicles. I had the luck to attend the 66th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. For those who don’t know, The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the world’s best annual display of historic and beautiful cars.

The Concours is not a contest of speed, but of elegance. Automobiles and motorcycles are judged for their historical accuracy, their technical merit and their style—and the best garner reward and recognition. Classes are commonly arranged by type, make, country of origin, or time period. Judges select first-, second-, and third-place finishers for each class in the event, and the judges confer the “Best of Show” award on one car from the group of first-place winners.

The festivities begin with the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex. This is a 17-mile drive that traverses nearby mountains and valleys. This is a sight to behold for both participants and spectators. The Pebble Beach Auctions, conducted by Gooding & Company occur on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. These auctions are among the most anticipated events of Pebble Beach Automotive Week, setting the bar for the collector car market worldwide. Pebble Beach RetroAuto returns to the ballrooms of The Inn at Spanish Bay. Now in its twelfth year, RetroAuto has established itself as a well-curated marketplace for the true automotive enthusiast, showcasing rare collectibles, historic automobilia, art and literature, as well as luxury items, technological tools and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance merchandise. This showcase is definitely a must for collectors. On Sunday, August 21, 2016, 200 of the most prized collector cars in the world will roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf; the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Tire meets turf and transformation occurs: the stage is set for one of the most competitive events in the automotive world, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Thousands of enthusiasts will be on hand to celebrate these vehicles and enjoy the company of others who share their passion.
