DEREK HOUGH ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

It is time for Winter, which is a great time of year to consider plastic surgery. Cooler weather allows bulkier clothing to conceal bruising and swelling. Most people have more time off from work during the holidays, allowing for rest and recovery.

Many procedures that people choose to have in the Winter are in anticipation of getting ready for the Summer beach season. Because the sun is not as strong this time of year, people choose to have their surgeries now to allow their scars time to heal. In addition, many people choose to have a new look in the early months of the new year.

Procedures on the face, including facelifts, brow lifts, eyelid lifts, and nose jobs, are common during the Winter months. These procedures can help to sculpt and improve the contours of the face. Other non-invasive methods, such as Botox and fillers, can help to correct wrinkles and smooth out the folds of the face. Certain body procedures, including breast surgeries and liposuction, are common as people start to think about preparing their bodies for the Summer season.

About the surgeon: Dr. Josef Hadeed is a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. He prides himself on providing an individualized approach to each patient, and empowers them to make decisions to help them look and feel their best.

EDITOR IN-CHIEF Once again another year is almost over, time to celebrate the upcoming holidays and think upon the hopes and dreams we would like to come to fruition in the new year. Our Winter cover star, Derek Hough, has been making his own dreams come true for a long time. Coming from humble beginnings to his stint in front of twenty million viewers each week on Dancing With The Stars, Derek has successfully become a household name. In the coming months, Derek will also be front and center in the TV adaptation of Hairspray. For our car aficcionado’s, we bring into focus the restore and rebirth of two classic autos. From a 1973 BMW E9 3.0CS in Fjord Blue to a Ferrari 275 GTB, the skill and craftsmanship is evident in the final outcome of both of these fine vehicles. We take our cue from this with the items our team has selected to showcase throughout these pages. From shoes to bow ties we have cultivated fantastic must have additions to your wardrobe. We spent some time with pro basketball player Kareem Rush to nd out what makes him tick and where the singer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and fashion designer is headed. Photographer Clyph Jean-Phillipe captured Mr.Rush modeling his own clothing designs from The Gentleman Brand on page 24. As more of us choose the freedom of living Solo, we’ve tapped Design Tourist Karen LeBlanc for some decorating tips for the creatively challenged. And for those of us that want to escape the winter weather we have compiled some chic vacation spots to relax and celebrate the holiday season. Here is to a fresh take on the year ahead ... CREATIVE DIRECTOR DEAR GENTLEMEN, The holidays are here and it’s time to get your swag on! We pride ourselves on providing our readers all the hottest places to go, decor, dream automotive and of course what to wear. This season the bow tie is a must-have at top of our list because it can make any button down and blazer into an incredible holiday look. While working on your game we have the ultimate cover star who is at the top of his. Derek Hough, 5 time Dancing with the Stars winner, 2-time Emmy winner for choreography, actor, and the brand new star of Hairspray Live this December on NBC. Since we are both Derek’s we had a great time. He taught me some fun dance moves and I taught him how to model. He told us all a story on how his sister (the famed beauty and fellow dancer) Juliana Hough is such an amazing model and how he watches her in awe. This was a great opportunity for me to get some great expression out of him and to get him out of his posing shell. He did a great job and I hope you will love the pictures of him in this issue. As so many of readers know we are obsessed with vintage and this issue is no different. Our very own Chiara Casiraghi reviews the newest automotive book from Assouline, FERRARI 275 GTB=08011... the periodical follows full restoration with photos and illustration from start to finish. This is a must read. To finish out the issue we share with you the ultimate island vacation spots. We have given you what to wear, what scents and now we offer the ultimate guide on where to let loose during your winter break! My personal favorite is the Eden Rock in St. Barths. Nowhere else will you see Beyonce, JZ, and all your favorite celebrities come undone and live like the rest of us. Happy vacationing and enjoy our holiday issue!

FROM START TOFINISH THE RESTORATION OF A FERRARI 275 GTB

Select few Automobiles stand out from the crowd. The Ferrari 275 GTB is the most important and adored automobiles to represent the iconic brand. Ferrari 275 GTB follows the restoration process with in-depth illustrations and photos by world renowned automobile photographer George Saitas. We get an insider’s view as this spectacular automobile finds new life.

Curated by

CHIARA CASIRAGHI photography

GEORGE SAITAS Ferrari 275 GTB is available for purchase at ASSOULINE boutiques worldwide and through www.assouline.com.

With a Pininfarina coupe designed body, the 275 GTB/C was so avant-garde that it was initially denied entrance into the racing Industry, but Enzo Ferrari’s persuasion led to the model becoming a legendary sports car. The Ferrari 275 GTB, produced between 1964 and 1968 immediately established itself in a class all its own, redefining workmanship. The two-seat front-engine Gran Tusimo Berglinetta was the first Ferrari to have a transaxle incorporated within a Pinifarina designed coupe body. Only 440,275 GTBs were built and designed in an era without speed limits. The owner of this specific model, Jeff Lotman, CEO of Global Icons, LLC, in LA, trusted his ride to Bruce Canepa to restore it to its former glory. It was completed after eleven months and 4,300 man Hours. Ferrari 275 GTB is a breathtakingly illustrated tribute to one of the greatest feats of artistry the automotive industry has ever known. “

DEREK HOUGH DANCING INTO HISTORY INTERVIEW BY

JESSICA FINN

Derek Hough is one of Hollywood’s men of many talents. He’s what you would call a triple threat. This man can not only dance circles around anyone you know, he can also act and sing, and he’s quite good at all three. Derek is currently slated to star in the TV adaptation of Hairspray, and has wrapped yet another fantastic season of Dancing With The Stars. He’s also slated to star alongside actress Jennifer Lopez in a new show on the NBC network. With so many glowing achievements, the real secret is that Derek Hough is a really good guy with a heart of gold, a network of close Hollywood power players, and a global perspective not often seen in entertainment. Derek took a moment to give us a peek into his frenetic and beautiful world.

Printed shirt and black jeans by All Saints, shoes by Sand.

Knit cob web sweater Diesel, available at Sand, Los Angeles.

by

Growing up in Utah, Derek’s life changed entirely when his parents were divorcing. He and his mega-star sister, Julianne Hough packed their things and headed to London when he was just 12. What a lot of people don’t know about Derek is this was the beginning of his lifelong friendship with Mark Ballas, a Dancing With The Stars cast member. “Mark and I actually met in Utah because his parents were teaching dance there. And when they moved to London, I moved over there with his parents and we became like brothers really. I’m the best man in his wedding. It’s cool because I remember us being kids in our bedroom back in London and being like, hey man it’s so weird that we’re going to be best men at each other’s weddings. It’s weird, so here we are!” Success hit hard for Derek’s tight knit group. His sister Julianne and best friend Mark would eventually make it all the way from Utah to the glamour of Hollywood, where Derek and Mark would share the stage on DWTS. Derek adds “It’s been really cool to go on these journeys and have these opportunities together. I think it’s very unique and very fortunate. Even with my sister, to be able to work with her and to share passions and interests. I’ve been very fortunate.”

17

However, Its not always easy being on live TV. Recently a pair of protestors stormed the stage of DWTS wearing anti Ryan Lochte t-shirts during Ryan’s performance. They were protesting Ryan’s Olympic robbery tale which he had apologized for not being completely candid about. This intrusion onto the stage and interference in Ryan’s performance did not sit well for the morally grounded Derek who decided to take matters into his own hands. Derek became a hero that night. He explains; “For me it flipped a switch and I went up there in my rhinestone jacket, I told them they had to leave. Especially when somebody’s vulnerable and they’re trying to do something good and they’re doing the best they can to make things right. Ryan was on the show taking the right steps to try and make things right for the situation he created at the Olympics. He apologized and he was trying to move forward with his life.” Derek believes that Ryan’s infamous Olympic lie about being robbed at a gas station was something he was already making amends for. He adds “All of us have done way worse, let’s be honest with ourselves. My father once told me ‘It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nice’ and I follow that.”

While Derek remains tight lipped about who or if he’s even currently dating, he does see himself moving forward with someone romantically “I do see myself married with kids and with a thriving career over the next five years.” So ladies, Derek reveals his dating deal breaker: “Smells, I hate bad smells. In any sense of the word. Somone who smokes is a deal breaker.” What Derek is more inclined to talk about are his amazing upcoming projects, including a new TV show on NBC with Jennifer Lopez and a TV adaptation of Hairspray playing the roll of Corny Collins. “The Hairspray cast is unbelievable! We have Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth, Harvey Fierstein and Martin Short. The role of Corny Collins is such a cool, great character. Corny is based on the real-life Disc Jockey Buddy Deane who in the early 1960’s had the idea of racial integration on his dance platform, The Buddy Deane Show. The world of Hairspray is based loosely on that but in that sense you have a true story. The whole show is very relevant.”

Beyond his several projects, beautifully clean cut Derek has a bit of a bad boy side. He can go on and on about his love for heavy metal. “I love heavy metal rock music. I was just at a concert the other day. I love the band Killswitch Engage. It’s weird. People see me when I’m in my DWTS costumes but I go listen to other music, it’s like, you know, crazy rock and metal music. I don’t think people really expect that out of me.” Growing up he spills on being in a band “I was the drummer in a punk-rock band. We had long hair and our fingernails painted black and the whole thing. So, for me it just reminds me of my youth and those times I just loved, it was such a great time in my life. It’s one of those things where it’s nostalgic.” @derekhough

KAREEM RUSH CROSSING OVER WITH PURPOSE Written By

DAWN GARCIA

Kareem Rush is a former NBA player, a fashion forward designer, a singer, but most importantly he is a man of substance, style and above all, a gentleman. When you first meet him, you are immediately taken by his grace, the ease he instills when you’re around him, and the eloquence when he talks. One of three brothers, all with basketball in their blood (youngest brother Brandon is a shooting guard and small forward for the Minnesota Timberwolves and oldest brother, JaRon played for UCLA), Kareem has tremendous respect for hard work, tenacity, focus and

dreaming big. While he began playing alongside basketball greats like Shaq and Kobe on the LA Lakers, his career has taken him on an incredible journey as a visionary and business man. Born in Kansas City, he is humble about his accomplishments and thankful for everything he has experienced. He is a man that doesn’t take career or opportunity for granted. It was an honor to sit down with Kareem to talk about his career, his current projects, and what’s ahead.

LAPALME MAGAZINE: Looking back on your two decades of playing basketball, what are some of the highlights as well as some of the adversity you had to overcome? KAREEM RUSH: I would say my most memorable times playing basketball would of been in high school playing with my older brother Jaron, it was madness because he was phenomenal and to this day, I remember him doing things not even NBA players could do and he was only 17! He is hands down the best high school player EVER out of Missouri. I had a lot of adversity as well but the hardest was my knee injury that ended my NBA career. It happened at 29 and I wasn’t prepared for what to do next. I had a difficult few years trying to figure out what direction I was going to take my life and what career path I wanted to take.
Through that process, although very tough at times, it forced me to explore new opportunities, learn to network and educate myself to be a better businessman. I look back on my injury now as a blessing in disguise because up to that point I felt the pinnacle of what I could accomplish was making it to the NBA but now I know that was only the beginning of my story.
LM: Phil Jackson is notorious for his zenlike approach to the game. In your time under the leadership of Jackson, what was one of the most valuable lessons you learned that you apply to your everyday life? KR: Phil was my first coach in the NBA and obviously one of the greatest coaches of all time and he also hated rookies! Called us whale feces! I remember him giving us random books to read that would apply to basketball somehow and I never read them. He loved to burn sage in film sessions to rid the room of bad energies. He’s a yogi. Looking back on my time with the Lakers, I really just enjoyed and cherished learning from, and playing, for one of the best of all time.

LM: Basketball is only one side to who you are. What is something your fans would be surprised to know about you? KR: SINGING! Its my first love. I sing all the time! I released my first full project last year, The Rebirth of the Renaissance Man, check it out!
LM: As a child, who were you inspired by? KR: I would say the first person who really inspired me was Michael Jordan.

LM: Style is undoubtedly something you possess. What do you believe is a staple for every man’s wardrobe? Why? KR: I believe your personal style says a lot about your personality and I pride myself on being a gentleman. My mindset is that whatever I put on, I want to make it look good. I think every man should have a piece that makes him feel that way. LM: With an apparel line, what message do you want your line to convey? KR: I want my brand to be known for being stylish and comfortable. My designs are simple and classic, with a focus on loungewear and bespoke suits. LM: If you could go back and talk to your younger self, what age would you go back to and what you say? KR: I would go back to my 22 year-old self when I first got drafted and say don’t take this for granted and work hard every day! LM: What do you personally believe are three of the greatest characteristics a person should possess? KR: Kindness, Humility, Purpose.

26

LM: What scares you? KR: What scares me is not reaching my full potential. LM: If you could hang with the original crooners, who would you most want to be in a room with? KR: The Rat Pack of course!

LM: While you've been heavily influenced by Michael Bublé and Maxwell, what is it about that era of music that lights you up inside? KR: My favorite era of music is 90’s R&B, especially Boyz II Men, Jodeci, New Edition were also very influential to me. LM: Working with various nonprofits, what have been some of your greatest experiences? KR: Every opportunity to give back is a great experience but my most memorable are those helping kids. Any chance I get to be able to have a positive influence is what gives me the most joy. Kids are the future! I have been involved in the areas of anti-bullying, youth sports, and access to affordable health care for underserved communities. As a founding executive of Kid Friendly Sports, and I am very commitedto black philanthropy via The Give Black Foundation. THE INSIDE TRACK ON THE LAKE MIRROR CLASSIC

Written By DARRYLE MOODY

Sun, Speed & Labours of Love The Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival is now in its 17th year. Held in downtown Lakeland, Florida and centered at the Art Deco inspired Lake Mirror Park and Promenade it is easy to see this area provides one of the most scenic venues around. Attracting over 40,000 spectators, The Lake Mirror Classic draws some of the top car collectors from throughout the southeast U.S. and is a support event to the very prestigious Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance held in mid-March. This event has become one of the largest downtown festivals in Central Florida. Over 600 classic vehicles, including wooden boats and antique motorcycles are on display. The Concours d’Elegance is the featured event of the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival weekend. Approximately 100 premium classic automobiles are typically invited to be displayed along the Lake Mirror Promenade on Saturday. A team of expert judges inspect and grade the vehicles worthy to receive a coveted Lake Mirror Swan trophy. The Open Car Show takes place on the streets of downtown Lakeland. The streets are closed-off to accommodate nearly 500 special interest and collector cars of all types. Vehicles are displayed in groups of similar makes and models.

30

Marque specific car clubs are encouraged to attend and efforts are made to reserve space for clubs with 10 or more members in attendance. Street vendors with various types of food and street entertainers add to the festival type atmosphere as spectators enjoy the vehicles. Wandering through the streets of downtown Lakeland basking in the sunshine something caught my eye...It was a 1973 BMW E9 3.0CS in Fjord Blue. One of my favorite classic BMW’s in its best color and is a 2016 Lakeland Classic Auto Festival Sponsors Award Winner! It was easy to find this gorgeous vehicles owner, Mr. Frank Mann. I asked Frank to tell me about the car and how it was acquired. Frank has owned the car for about six years and has been a fan of the body style of the BMW 3.0CS ever since he saw one in the seventies. Back then it was an expensive car for someone just out of college so he found instead a clean 1973 BMW 2002 in Atlantic Blue. “I drove it for several years, then eventually took a job that required me to wear a coat and tie so I needed a car with air conditioning so sold it off. I regretted selling it almost immediately. After a long corporate career, and several BMW’s later, I decided to find me a vintage 1973 BMW 2002 in Chamonix white. I promptly dropped an M3 S14 drive train into the little car and made a real sleeper out of it.” “A few months later I got the bug to get a 3.0CS and started looking around. This was around 2010 and the E9 coupes had not yet begun to really appreciate. My plan was to find one with some needs and do what I had done to the 2002 and drop an M5 S38 engine into it making to a beautiful hotrod. After looking around for several months I suddenly found a very clean E9 on eBay. I was late and the auction closed before I could participate as not meeting its reserve.” “The owner did not relist it on eBay and I thought I had lost it, so I left a message for the owner to call me. The owner had actually listed it on the E9 Boards thinking it would sell quicker. He emailed me back that day and I immediately asked him why he was selling the car and what he wanted for it.” Frank Mann with his one his awards for his beautiful 1973 BMW 3.0CS.

“As it turned out the owner was a student who’s school visa was up and he had to go back to Thailand very soon and he could not take the car. I made him a offer just below what his reserve was on eBay contingent to an onsite inspection – he accepted my offer.” “I had already purchased a freshly rebuilt S38 M5 engine in southern California which I had every intention of dropping into the E9 that I had just purchased.” The S38B36 engine was designed specifically for BMW E34 M5 which was released in 1988 and built from 1988-1996. The engine was built by BMW M GmbH in Munich and the 3,535cc inline 6-cylinder engine produced 316-hp at 6,900rpm and 266 lb-ft at 4,750 rpm. “Since the car was located in Costa Mesa, California and an original California car, it meant it should be relatively rust free and close to the shop I had just bought the M5 engine from for a future swap.” “I asked the shop – that specialized in vintage BMWs – to take a look at the car for me. The inspection came back very positive. The car had some minor issues primarily with the interior but it was clean and straight so I wired the owner the balance and arranged a closed truck to transport it to my favorite vintage BMW shop located in Longwood, Florida, highly-regarded German Motorwerks. Jim Shoemaker and his team know BMW 2002’s and E9’s like no one else on the east coast.” “When the car arrived in Longwood a week later I was there to watch it come off of the truck. After looking over the car my mechanic quickly told me you are not touching this car – it is entirely too clean – so the planned and extensive engine swap was immediately shelved for more of a stock restoration.” “The student that I purchased the car from was apparently the second owner. The original owner had repainted the car professionally back in the early eighties the lovely shade of Fjord Blue Metallic which has held up very well over the years. He also converted the automatic transmission over to a Getrag 265 5-speed manual transmission after he was told by a shop out there that it would improve his fuel mileage.” “When the car was inspected more closely it was decided to first take the dash out which was cracked and send it to California to be repaired and recovered.”

32

“While that was happening we ordered new leather for the cracking original Blue leather as well. The teak wood trim like many BMW E9’s was dull and in need of work, but rather than take it out and replace the teak veneer, since I was in the guitar business I sourced some amazing heavily figured Tiger Flamed Maple.” “There just happened to be a cabinet shop next to the Longwood BMW shop that we enlisted to reproduce the wood trim in the new solid wood we had found. The cabinet maker agreed and took the old wood substrates out and diligently copied them in the Flamed Maple.” The wood appears to be factory and offers a warm tone to the eye. “Since the wood was solid and not a veneer it would hold up better to water and sun. The piece on the passenger side that curves around the dash in a compound curve was bit challenging, but it turned out perfectly. The wood grain is stunning and really sets the cars interior off.” “When the new blue leather came in we took the seats out and to an upholstery shop that did a great job, but the color of the new leather was slightly lighter than the almost perfect door cards so we had the seats color matched to be identical to the original door cards. This made a huge difference “By this time the new dash had returned and was installed. Two of the older window motors in the rear had begun to act up so they were replaced while the interior was all apart. All of the glass is original as is the carpet and head liner and in really good condition so it was left it alone.” “Now that the interior was put back together, we retuned out attention to the outside of the car. For this job we found a local St Petersburg body shop famous for building SEMA cars called Tom Argue designs.” “They removed the bumpers and had them cleaned and re-chromed. He inspected the body and paint and found very little wrong with it, but if you are familiar with BMW E9’s then you know no car is without issues.” “The car had developed a couple of small bubbles on the lower front fenders – a very common spot. After tearing the entire interior out it was discovered that the paint everywhere else looked very good and the shock towers were sound and clean.” “Yom Argue’s shop made repairs to the small areas that had begun to bubble. One side had not penetrated the steel so only required some

33

minor repair. The bubble on the opposite fender had penetrated so they first sprayed some rust preventive wax solution up inside the cavity inside the fender before sealing it with new steel and paint.” “With the chrome fenders back and on the car and the minor paint issues repaired the car was looking show room new. So we took the car back to the shop in Longwood for work on the suspension.” “We sourced a suspension kit from La Joya Independent BMW in southern California which consisted of new springs and shocks and front and rear sway bars. At that time we also changed all the other bushings. The brakes had recently been serviced so they looked fine – just needed some cleaning. Underneath the car there was zero rust except on the exhaust components, so we replaced the entire exhaust system with a new shiny stainless steel one and changed the smaller Alpina wheels for new 16 inch Alpinas and new rubber all around.” “Under the hood looked good but the car was over 40 years old so we eventually changed all the rubber hoses, the water pump, the fan clutch, the battery, the power steering pump, the distributor – points and plugs, the thermostat and the valve cover gasket. Since we could not pin point one issue – we changed everything we could. Once all the new parts were added we were left with a car that ran smooth and did not overheat”. “As it stands now the paint is not perfect but without a magnifying glass you would be hard pressed to spot any issues that are there. I drive the car so it is not a garage queen.”

34

“Presently the car has 49K miles on it. It cranks easily and runs smoothly. The body remains level and stable in the curves. It will run smoothly on the highway all day at 80 or more and never misses a beat. The vintage AC works even if it has a hard time keeping up with the August heat with all that glass. The pillar-less design of the roof line with all that glass is like a fighter cockpit and one of the few cars that actually looks better with all the windows down.” “It is a regular at DuPont’s Cars and Coffee and several car shows, garnering trophies and ribbons whenever we take it out. It draws admiring comments at virtually every red light and gas station and thumbs up every time I pass someone. For a 40+ year old design it still looks fresh and modern and to my mind, a better looking car today than the day it came from Germany. Actually a Bertone design, and the chassis built by Karmann before BMW received it – no wonder the car still turns heads and has a design that is timeless to my eyes.” I spent most of the day taking in the beauty of the various cars on the streets and interacting with the event staff. They answered all of my questions with enthusiasm and were very welcoming to me. I found the Lake Mirror Classic to be an exceptional event. There was a lot of variety in the vehicles spread out over many acres with knowledgable staff and a lot of history. Next year, take a small vacation and come celebrate vintage cars along with me.

DECORATING SOLO Utilizing Space For Self Expression Written By KAREN LEBLANC / DESIGN TOURIST

Decorating as a single person can be blissfully liberating. Free to choose your own colors, fixtures and furnishings, you don’t have the typical taste clashes over design choices to work through with your significant other. Designing is a dictatorship in your home and that’s just fine and good but without someone to be the yin to your yang, the end result might not bode well for resale value or a future significant other. A whole genre of reality TV shows feature domestic squabbles over decor as entertainment—the bachelor who must adjust to his new live-in girlfriend, the newly married couple buying their first home.

In my travels as The Design Tourist, I’ve had the opportunity to meet and interview many single homeowners and I’ve seen a lot of over-the-top single spaces from New York City Lofts to South Beach bachelor pads. I also admired some skillfully pulled together pads that strike a balance between personal and practical.

Whether an apartment dweller, renter or loft owner, the challenge of decorating for one is to balance your signature look with an inviting living space that fits your current and future lifestyle. Here are four tips for decorating “selfie” spaces that embrace the yin and the yang without screaming bachelor pad or diva dwelling.

49

Ty Pennington Home Improvement TV Star, Ty Pennington gets it right with his own signature style he calls “modern-primitive,” an oxymoron meaning comfortable and casual yet current. “I like clean lines but I also like things that feel like they’ve been worn in and they are comfortable. I think that’s the thing you have to balance is keeping everything pristine and clean and white but at the same time, having something really comfy that you want to sit down and kick back and put your feet up,” says Pennington, who custom crafts a lot of his own furnishings out of natural wood. “I think those kinds of warm tones make a house inviting.”

Jean-Robert Bellande Champion professional poker player JeanRobert Bellande calls his style “man cave meets modern.” Bellande, who invited me to tour his Las Vegas penthouse in the Mandarin Oriental, wanted to create “the coolest looking unit at the Mandarin.” The one bedroom penthouse has a luxe masculine vibe with a quilted leather feature wall in the master bedroom and oval ceiling embellishments. “I wanted to have a warehouse feel throughout the unit,” says Bellande, who redesigned the two bedroom penthouse into a one bedroom unit with a large gameroom. Pick Timeless Trends A timeless trend sounds like an oxymoron but it’s real a thing. The current look is all about modern-mother nature, a mix of natural materials such as wood, stone crafted into clean, streamlined forms. Animate your space and express your personality with art, off beat objects and accessories. Look for those one-of-a-kind things that represent you. I’ve always been fascinated by personal narrative of a space— what it says about the person who lives there. Approach decorating as storytelling through color, furnishings, artwork, decorative objects, fabrics and architecture. Through design and décor, construct a narrative about your personality, aspirations, values and passions without veering into kitschy, caricature, themey territory. In my home, I have nostalgic décor elements that speak to my Cajun-French heritage such as Fleur De Lis floor mosaic medallions, white painted brick features that remind me of New Orleans’ courtyards and prints of the famous Blue Dog by Louisiana Painter George Rodrigue. These elements hint at my heritage and personality without taking over the home.

Create Flexible Spaces Flex space is the buzzword in new construction albeit custom homes or urban lofts. Modern lifestyles are in constant flux and smart living space can morph to meet those changes and challenges. Space planning is all about maximizing the functionality of your square footage so think about each room’s full potential. Choose furnishings that multi-task. Today, a whole new category of flexible furniture is entering the market designed to help you maximize your living space. At the Dwell on Design show in New York City, I saw these flexible furniture pieces in action in a micro suite by Resource Furniture that was 240 square feet but functioned twice its size. A sofa wall bed system, a coffee table that doubled as a desk, and a media system with hidden storage for chairs and a dining table were just some of the cleverly engineered pieces designed to help us live large in limited space.

53

For many single dwellers, square footage is at a premium but color and lighting can make a room feel larger. Consider the power of color to sculpt and enlarge space as a design tool. To make a room appear larger, paint the entire room a single color, light or dark, instead of several colors. Consider a monochromatic palette using tints and shades of a single color. To make small square rooms look larger, paint the opposite walls a more intense color to create a sense of depth that opens up the room. Open up narrow rooms by painting the shorter walls darker and the larger walls lighter. Many clashing or contrasting hues in a room creates eye fatigue and makes a room feel smaller, so keep the contrast to a minimum by adding a few bold pops of color. One common design myth is that ceilings should be painted white. Not so, the color of the ceiling depends on the visual effect you are trying to achieve. A darker color ceiling helps direct attention back down to eye level, allowing it to focus on walls, furniture and accessories. If you want to make the walls appear taller, paint a darker color on the lower half of the wall and a lighter color on the upper half or paint using a gradient that goes from dark to light starting at the bottom of the wall.

Use Color to Sculpt Space

Play with Proper Scale Scale also can manipulate the perception of space. The scale of objects in a room refers to the size and proportion they are in relation to other elements in the space. If everything in a room is the same size, then nothing will stand out so use scale to create visual interest. Here are a few of my tricks of the trade for creating scale in a space. To create height in a room, hang longer curtains near the ceiling rather than just above the window trim. The effect enhances the proportion of small windows, a small room, or a low ceiling. If you have high ceilings and tall windows, then include at least one other tall object in the room to achieve balance.

For visual interest, add decorative elements in a variety of sizes—tall, short, wide, narrow, big and small. When accessorizing, group items from large to small and layer various sizes. To create a focal point, group several small like objects to form a larger visual collection. If you are working with patterns, use large scale prints on the curtains and walls and smaller prints on pillows and decorative accessories.

Scale is a tricky concept to master in home decor and one of the most common design faux pauxs. When an item is too large or too small for a space, it throw the room out of proportion and detracts from the beauty of its decor. Developing a sense for proper scale is part art and science equally governed by rules and an intuitive eye for proportion and balance in a space.
