ALANA TYLER SLUTSKY Alana is a self-taught fashion, beauty and portrait photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. Alana loves to play with color and light, as well as the idea that “fashion is fantasy.” This thought is the driving force behind her editorial work.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR DEAR LADIES, Never in my life have I been more proud of women. Your strength, resilience, ownership of self and of course self-expression is on display more than ever. With the election so close in our past and the strength being shown nationwide by Hillary Clinton supporters it shows that women hold more power than ever. When choosing our new cover star, power was definitely in our thoughts. We wanted an actress who embodies elegance and beauty both inside and out. But with those qualities, we wanted someone who is “kick ass”. We found her in the star of NBC hit show Blindspot, Jaimie Alexander. If you are one of the few that have never seen Blindspot, Jaimie’s character is covered in tattoos and literally kicks ass on the show in every episode of her FBI drama. I had never met her before, when she arrived at the Smyth Hotel in NYC for our cover shoot she was sweet and charming, you could feel her inner strength the moment she walked in. She may be fighting on screen but as you can see on our cover and spread Jamie truly holds an inner elegance you can’t fake. That is the definition of a strong woman. To keep with the theme of strength, our entire issue is filled with the bravest trends. I love the holidays because even the most conservative dressers will drink a spiked eggnog and adorn themselves in sequins, satins and the hautest shoes of the season. There are fun nights and great times to come, happy reading and happy holidays! xoxo Derek

Nearly 700,000 Swarovski Crystals hit the runway during Fashion Week and we can’t wait to wear them this Spring! Swarovski Collective designers Creatures of the Wind, Tome and Rosie Assoulin showcased stunning Spring/ Summer 2017 collections featuring over 575,000 Swarovski crystals this New York Fashion Week. In the first season of collaboration for 2017 collections, the Swarovski Collective designers received financial support as well as the opportunity to experiment with Swarovski’s extraordinary crystal range. Curated By CHIARA CASIRAGHI Photo Credits DAN LECCA (RUNWAY) ELI SCHMIDT (BACKSTAGE)

Tome: Runway Show on Sunday, September 11 at The Dock, Skylight at Moynihan Station “While there is always continuity season to season, this collection is the first time we have dedicated an entire runway collection to bold print. The Swarovski crystal elements suggest movement this time around, and there is a lot of movement, quite literally, in the collection.” – Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin of Tome

Creatures of the Wind: Runway Show on Thursday, September 8 at 46 W 24th Street “Each season is an exercise in recontextualization, and this season we chose to approach the crystal application through a psychedelic exploration of 1950s pop music. As with every other component that goes into the making of the collection – fabric, silhouette, color, texture, treatments – each season brings the challenge of making these components new, relevant, and beautiful. It’s a constant challenge to move further than the season before. With Swarovski, specifically, it’s about using the crystals in a new way, ideally proposing something that hasn’t been previously explored in crystal.” – Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of Creatures of the Wind

Rosie Assoulin: Presentation on Monday, September 12 at 450 W 14th Street “Swarovski crystal elements take our garments to the next level and capture movement. It’s the extra ‘oomph!’ Finding new applications in the garments comes naturally – it’s figuring out how we make it our own that is the most interesting part. We’re constantly pushing the craftsmen we work with to try new things with us and the result always is so fun and exciting!” – Rosie Assoulin

ARIA Your Winter Oasis Awaits Written By DAWN GARCIA

As winter looms with promises of reprieve from the daunting heatwaves we’ve endured around the country and around the world, planning escapes can be a bit of a challenge. While time is traditionally of the essence with family gatherings, unending holiday parties, gift giving and meal planning, we figured perhaps we’d give you a guide for a place you can escape to for 24-48 hours and feel like you’ve been given plenty of time away from the chaos.

Imagine the days when Sinatra, Martin, and Davis strolled the Vegas boardwalk with swagger in their step, the chill of cold Vegas air seeping into their perfectly tailored suits while their famous smiles greet you as you walk past. That’s how Vegas should be and during winter, it’s a great time to step into a little elegance and get all your old school sass out of the way in less than 48 hours!

16

During the winter months, Vegas is a terrific place to go for a two-day escape. We ventured to Sin City to explore and while there are a ton of hotels to choose from, we chose one that we think you should definitely check out.

CRAVE

Hospitality Suite

A hotel that is affluent, pristine, and certainly a standout amidst the backdrop of the city: ARIA Hotel & Casino. Aria Hotel is visually stunning as you enter. High ceilings, modern accents, easy check-in, impeccable service and a fine art collection worth over $40 million that is spread throughout the property.

Sky Villa

King Deluxe Room

Oldenberg Typewriter Eraser

During the holidays, you can expect the décor to be exquisite with streaming lights, a few Christmas trees, accents of color and festive ambiance that is sure to impress. With several room options, if you’re planning on enjoying the room? Spend the extra to live it up in the villa! They are high-end homes away from home … that is, if your home is a two-bedroom gem with everything from 360 degree views, a private butler and your own private sky pool. Otherwise, it’s definitely worth enjoying the Tower Suites. They have beautiful views of Las Vegas, modern interiors and a chic setup.

Nancy Rubins’ Big Edge

The most notable integration at ARIA is the installation of over 4,000 Crave tablets in every guest room. This installation is the industry’s largest and together, Crave and ARIA are setting new standards in worldclass guest service. This definitely raises the bar for the world’s most technologically advanced hotel. What does Crave do? This revolutionary in-room technology allows guests to build their Las Vegas itineraries with just one touch including ordering room service, spa packages, adjusting the in-room temperature, close and open the curtains, call housekeeping, concierge, basically anything you need! You control. We used the tablets to make the room cozy, open the curtains in the morning and order room service and it was the easiest thing ever!

and Julian Serrano Tapas. Lemongrass is a Thai-infused themed restaurant with delicious (and filling) options, especially when you’ve stayed up way past your bedtime. (Just what Vegas requires) Lemongrass is open until 2:00am. Julian Serrano Tapas offers a range of Spanish tapas made with love and stays open until 11:00pm. For bar bites and lounging, we’re fans of Don’t Miss The Action! Great chips and salsa, good beer selections and very cool décor. When you’re ready for a little bliss and don’t want to stray from the gorgeous hotel? Take a swim in the pool or head to the spa’s shio salt room, therapy pool or ganbanyoku beds to soothe away any tension you may have.

Aria is a luxurious, beautiful, and inspiring As far as dining goes, ARIA has a great oasis to book your Winter stay. selection of bars, bar bites, and some of the best Las Vegas dining options. “I’m terrified of airplanes”

Interview By CHANTAL WALDHOLZZ

Jaimie Alexander tells me as we sit down to chat about work, fashion, life and all that jazz. Jaimie Alexander isn’t your typical Hollywood actress. From her go get ‘em attitude to her personal style, she carries herself like someone you’ve known all your life — a very bold one at that. Now the stunning brunette is showing off her effortlessly cool style and opening up about her booming career and fashion sense.

“What I wear is an outward expression of who I am. It changes on the daily, but so do moods and weather,” the 32-year-old says. “I love being creative. I’m edgy but with class. Elegance isn’t just a look, it’s a behavior.” So it makes perfect sense when she references Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani as her biggest style icons — two women who know exactly what they want and who they are. “I loved [Angelina in] her early days... all the goth and edge she had,” Alexander says. “I love Gwen for having her own vibe. For all the fashion ‘risks’ she takes. I find her inspiring.”

“I love confidence. I try to incorporate that into my daily style,” she says. “If I’m comfortable in what I’m wearing then I’m confident. Some days that’s sweatpants and a beanie and other days it’s an evening gown with Giuseppe Zanotti heels.” Like her confident approach when it comes to style, the brunette beauty seems to carry That confidence took time to master, hav- that with the roles she takes on. As both ing listened to others tell her who she was Jane Doe on NBC’s Blindspot and Lady Sif as an up-and-coming actress. in the first two Thor films, Alexander has a knack for tackling strong female roles. “It’s not a good feeling when you’re told “I appreciate these roles,” she says. “I have your style is too this or too that,” Alexander a fighter’s spirit and so do most of the charreminisces. “I lost some of my individuality acters I play.” listening to that bullshit. “She’s a modern-day woman in an extraordinary situation. I love her realness. Any skill set or ability she exudes has come from hard work and persistence. This character inspires me every day.”

“Chris is very goofy and always has a smile on his face. He genuinely seems grateful for everything. I adore him,” she says, adding Tom “is really lovely and such a gentleman. He’s a serious actor with immense talent.”

Ever since nabbing the role, the actress tells us how it’s completely changed her life. “I’ve learned a lot about myself. How far to push myself and when to ask for help … I’ve learned to truly focus on what’s important and I don’t let the little things get me down,” she says.

With a third film underway, Alexander can’t confirm whether or not she’ll be back, but says she’d be more than delighted to tackle it again. “I’d love to continue my journey as her, and it’s my honest hope that I will.”

“She’s an intensely physical character while also very emotionally charged. I find that playing her has me continually using all my talents and abilities as a performer—which keeps me very satisfied,” she says. “I knew I had to take this role. Deep down, I think I truly believed it was written just for me.”

When she’s not filming or walking glitzy red carpets, you can find her being adventurous in her adopted hometown of NYC—where she films Blindspot.

“I absolutely adore it here—the magic of it all. It isn’t just a place where I film; it’s its own character. It helps bring magic,” she says. “I love the food, the art, the people, the pace. MOLYNEUX AT HOME

THE ACCLAIMED INTERIOR DESIGNER AND HIS TEAMS OF ARTISIANS Curated By CHIARA CASIRAGHI

With the credo “history and savoir faire working in unison,” Juan Pablo Molyneux creates luxurious interiors the way poets write epics. Whether in the city, in the countryside, or on an island, every project is an odyssey, the ultimate story of an insatiable traveler, a free and inquiring mind that knows no borders. From a neoclassical French maisonette nesting at the top of a Chicago skyscraper to a Palladian villa on the outskirts of Moscow, Molyneux’s interior designs refer to the past with a twist of the unexpected, combining fantasy and pragmatism. To this end, Molyneux surrounds himself with master artisans who in their own way tell intriguing stories through exceptionally detailed lacquerwork, decorative painting, carved woodwork, straw marquetry, verre églomisé, scagliola (colored plaster that imitates marble), Cordovan leather, embroidered drapery and upholstery: Without these centuries-old techniques, it is impossible to evoke the atmosphere of history.

Juan Pablo Molyneux: At Home is available for purchase at ASSOULINE boutiques worldwide and through www.assouline.com.

44

I always respect four fundamental concepts: Harmony, Proportion, Symmetry, & Rhythm.

Raised in Santiago, Chile, Molyneux studied architecture at the Catholic University of Chile and later attended the École des Beaux-Arts and the École du Louvre in Paris. He opened his first interior design office in Santiago in 1970 and in Buenos Aires in 1975; eight years later he moved to New York, and in 1997 opened another branch in Paris. Molyneux frequently lectures on the craft and history of architecture and interior design. He has received many awards, among them the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004. He serves on the Boards of Trustees of the American Friends of Versailles, the World Monuments Fund, and the French Heritage Society, and he established the Foundation Juan Pablo and Pilar Molyneux for the Safeguarding and Promotion of Crafts in 2015.

As we head into the winter months and the holidays loom just around the corner, wines are at the forefront of the seasons festivities! After having spent the year traveling around the world visiting wine regions and sipping from global vines, we are excited to share a list of whimsical winter wines that will get you ready for the holidays ahead. With an abundance of varietals to choose from, it comes down to what your palate is thirsty for: white, rosé, red, sparkling, or something entirely new. Do you want dry or sweet? Old world or new world? Knowing there are thousands of grape varietals and hundreds of wine regions to explore, the choices are endless so we figured it might help to narrow down some of the choices. Whether you’re still missing summer or are happily diving into a brisk winter, here is our list of wines that inspire whimsy and welcome in the season one happy toast at a time and the best part? They’re all under $65 a bottle! So as winter creeps in with an icy chill, get playful with some new whimsical wines meant for giving and consuming! Vazart-Coquart Brut Reserve: Blanc de Blancs NV ($44) – Made from 100% chardonnay, which makes this wine a “blanc de blancs”. This light-yellow wine smells like white flowers and lemons with mineral undertones. On the palate, it is fresh and crisp. At this price, you will not have to spend too much money to wow your friends.

BUBBLES An ideal gift on any occasion is, hands down, champagne! Bubbles scream celebration and friends always “ooh and ahh” when given a bottle. This time though? We’re encouraging you to think outside the box. Instead of going with one of the brands that everyone knows, try a “Grower Champagne,” (a wine made by the family that owns the vineyard).

Rosé Champagne: Once you pick out a Grower Champagne to give as a gift, pick out one for yourself to enjoy. But, for personal enjoyment, pick a rosé Champagne because there is something about a pink wine with bubbles that cannot help but make you smile. Bruno Gobillard Mlle: Sophie Brut Rosé NV ($52-$62) – The Gobillard family has been growing grapes since the 18th century and began producing their own wine in 1858. The rosé is a blend of 50% pinot noir, 30% chardonnay and 20% pinot meunier. To make the wine pink, 15% of still red wine is added to the blend to add color. The wine has aromas of red berry, and grapefruit. On the palate, it is fresh with mineral notes and a beautiful salinity on the finish that will make you crave some cheese to enjoy with it.

46

De Iuliis 2015 Semillon: Hunter Valley, Australia ($15-$20) – De Iuliis, a family-owned winery since 1998, picks the semillon early and ages it for three months, on the yeasts (sur less), in stainless steel. The wine is low in alcohol but high in acid with notes of citrus and florals. It is the ideal wine to enjoy with oysters but also can be paired with beef In the world of white wine, there are lots tartare. of interesting grapes to try. If you love the crispness and acidity of a sauvignon blanc, Grenache is a traditionally known as red wine grape but it has a relative: then give a Semillon a try. A variety blended Grenache blanc. Grenache blanc is a white wine grape. It is one of the with sauvignon blanc to make Bordeaux primary white grapes grown in the Rhône Valley in France. Grenache blanc in France. But, in contrast to France, blanc is a beautiful straw-colored, high-acid wine that has a nose of in the Hunter Valley of Australia? Semillon green apple and peach. That said, California has a great producer of shines. Grenache blanc in Paso Robles.

WHITES

Tablas Creek 2015 Grenache Blanc: Adelaida District, Paso Robles ($30) – With similarities to Chateauneuf du Pape, Tablas Creek is the winery to visit. The winery was created as a partnership between the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel in France and the Haas family. The grenache blanc has a nose of citrus, green apple and sea spray. The bright acids and the salinity on the finish make this wine ideal to enjoy with dishes ranging from sushi and fish to spicy Asian dishes. To purchase this wine, go to: www.tablascreek.com

2014 TIMBRE Pinot Noir: ‘Lead Vocals’, Bien Nacido Vineyard ($45) – Previously under the label La Fenetre, owner and winemaker Josh Klapper started making wine in Santa Barbara in 2005. Focused on producing balanced, food-friendly wines from the Santa Maria Valley and the Central Coast, Timbre Pinot Noir “Lead Vocals” will please most palates. Brought to a dinner party recently, the elegant wine with aromas of strawberry, cranberry, cocoa powder and earth had every single person asking where they could get it. To purchase this wine, go to: www.lafenetrewines.com Another fantastic red wine to pair with holiday dishes is grenache. You cannot go wrong with one from the Rhône Valley but there is also delicious domestic syrah. Paso Robles is a popular place for syrah but we like the syrah from Ballard Canyon in Santa Barbara County.

REDS Wondering what wine is a must on the holiday dinner table? Aside from Champagne, pinot noir is the prefect wine. The fruity and earthy flavors make it a wine that pairs with almost anything – chicken, salmon, lamb, veal, pork and cheese. Pinot noir is grown in Burgundy (France), New Zealand, Oregon, Sonoma as well as other regions. One of our favorite places for pinot noir however is Santa Barbara.

Larner Wine 2012 Estate Syrah: Ballard Canyon ($38) – Larner Wine is a family-run winery with 34 acres of vine planted of Rhône varieties: syrah, grenache, mourvedre and viognier, as well as a small block of Italian malvasia bianca. The cool climate and sandy soils contribute to the expressiveness and acidity of this wine. With aromas of rose petal, leather, cherry and vanilla and a long finish, this is the wine to pair with a roast or stew. To purchase this wine, go to: http://www.larnerwine.com Brachetto d’Acqui is a red wine from the Piedmont region in Italy that is slightly sweet and slightly effervescent with aromas of strawberry and cherry. It’s impossible not to fall in love with a brachetto. This is the wine to finish any meal as it pairs wonderfully with chocolate, strawberries or cheese. Marenco Pineto: Brachetto d’Acqui ($20) - Run by third generation Michela Marenco and her sisters, their graceful brachetto is a deep ruby color with aromas of rose petals and strawberries. On the palate, the wine is subtle and delicate with flavors of raspberries, strawberries and cherry jolly ranchers. Pair it with strawberries and cream, a fruit tart or pour it over your strawberries. To purchase this wine, go to: www. wine.com

SARAH WYNTER Interview By JESSICA FINN

Sarah Wynter has been in film and television for over fifteen years with great success landing a variety of roles including playing Kiefer Sutherland’s love interest Kate Warner on the hit series 24. She has new project out now on Amazon by David Kelly titled Goliath alongside power houses like Billy Bob Thorton and William Hurt. She’s also starring in the 400th episode of SVU, being directed by the shows lead Mariska Hargitay. Sarah’s life in New York City with her three young boys is busy, beautiful and rewarding. Sarah talks with Lapalme about working with the legendary and sometimes infamous Billy Bob Thorton, her family and how she is turning tragedy into triumph. Sarah’s balance of work and being a single mother to three busy young boys is inspiring, but she’s also a realist. “Its hard to make time for everything, the best way to say it is there’s just not enough time for everything. I have to prioritize and thats the boys first, me second then work and then friends.” She’s humble and honest, but she also has been able to find time to fit in a new romantic connection; “I am seeing someone very special. They are not in the entertainment industry and its too new to talk about, but they are very special to me.” With so many pieces to juggle, the Australian born beauty finds the best way to maintain her good looks and health is by keeping it simple. Sarah explains “I don’t wear makeup unless I’m working or

promoting. I try to drink lots of water, and I moisturize once in a while. I’ll do tennis when I can or a bootcamp class with friends.” Sarah also dishes on working with Billy Bob Thorton who plays the lead role in Goliath. “People always ask me is he weird?” Apparently, that couldn’t be further from the truth. “Billy Bob helps people struggling in their roles. He understands this is a jigsaw, though it won’t work without him he understands that all the pieces must work together.” She adds “Thats a real movie star. He has such a magical quality.” With her passions clearly and firmly rooted in raising her family and in her work, Sarah does have time and energy to also work towards a cause that she holds very close to her heart. “I am a pro gun safety advocate with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. We want to see universal background checks for gun purchases on a national level.” Sarah has suffered her own personal gun related tragedy in the past, but its her future that she really wants to protect from gun violence in America. “I’m not the only person who has been affected by something in my own history, it may seem tragic but everyone deals with loss. I really think that becoming a mother and an American that I can’t just think, debate and repost things on Facebook. I needed to get out there and do something.”

ART BASEL MIAMI A GUIDE TO IMMERSING YOURSELF IN CULTURE

Written By DAWN GARCIA

Art Basel is perhaps the world’s largest gathering of artists, art collectors and an active introduction to pieces that are in fact changing the visual landscape of the world. This December’s Art Basel Miami is perhaps one of the more poignant as contemporary and modern art feasts itself on the open-ended spectrum of possibility through sculpture gardens, unusual popup events, architectural spaces lending themselves solely to the creation of art, and of course the welcoming arms of the city itself. Art Basel is an exhibition of prestige, thoughtfulness, boundary pushing, social freedom, abandon and immersive intellect. There are few that attend that do not leave impacted by the magic that exists in the work presented. With every one of your senses heightened through audio, visual and tactile experiences, this year has exceptional events and offerings we felt were ones you shouldn’t dare miss. Introducing our guide to this year’s events … While there are countless moments and gatherings you should certainly seek out, a few are so interesting and unique we encourage you to explore*. For the seasoned art savant, POSITIONS is where to go to discover new and emerging talent. The exhibition provides a space for new talent to be seen and whether it is a single piece or a small collection, it allots artists the opportunity to utilize their creative voice in a much larger surrounding. For purveyors, NOVA is a rather prestigious exhibition where galleries choose an artist to showcase. Often times, the artist’s work will have been produced within the last three years and has not yet been seen by the public. For the avid avant-garde film lover, FILM is an outdoor screening that takes place in SoundScape Park where works are shown on a 7,000 square-foot projection wall of the Frank Gehry designed New World Center and inside the Miami Beach Convention Center. So there you have it. While you ignite the emotional artist within or come upon a piece of art that stuns you, Art Basel Miami is the place to kick off winter. Find your passion, feed your soul and awaken what has laid dormant. *Please note that some events occur on site, some throughout the city as well as some happening once the show concludes.

Kennedy, Jr. Since then, he has cemented a place for his designs and undeniable sense of emotional connection to everything he does, everywhere in the world from runways to private collections. His sense of simplicity contrasted with edgy artistic expression marries beautifully from his ready-to-wear collections to his purposeful garments made for clients like Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker and Claire Danes. Rodriguez’s exhibition will be displayed until January 8th showcaing a range of creations, designs, sketches, and personal photographs of him in his studio.
