I love down to earth people and experiences. This issue really touches on both of those subjects. In August, Lapalme Magazine was offered the opportunity to be a part of the LA Food & Wine Festival. The event is the utmost in class and distinction. CEO David Alan Bernahl II, has curated the four-day epicurean event showcasing the finest in food and drink culture and culinary personalities throughout the Nation. The backdrop of the iconic buildings, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Broad Museum along with the bohemian sounds of Wyclef Jean set the scene for the most prominent epicurean influencers in the country. If you haven’t been to the event in the past, I would make a point to attend next year.

PETER FACINELLI BEYOND TWILIGHT By Jessica Finn @jessicafinnnyc

Peter Facinelli grew up in Queens New York, the product of immigrant parents who scoffed at his dreams of becoming an actor, only for those dreams to be actualized over the past 20 years. ‘When I told my parents I wanted to act, I’m first generation - they looked at me like I was from Mars.’ As a resourceful kid from Queens, Peter told a little white lie about his post college career plans. ‘I told them I wanted to be a lawyer. I took an acting 101 class at St. John’s University.’

22

23

Before long he started working with Mark Amitim, who trained William Dafoe, and fellow Queens native Steve Buscemi. ‘Mark became a mentor and he got me out of St. John’s and into New York University. I told my parents I am taking acting classes because it helps you for when you have to get in front of a courtroom.’ His filmography is extensive, but his career hit a most interesting apex when he took on the role of Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight films. The fandom associated with the series was overwhelming for the actors. ‘I had a great experience doing those films, the fans were amazing and they are incredibly generous, and it was six years of my life. But the more films we did, the more alienated we became.’ Going out became an issue for the cast who would have hotels, restaurants and film sets swarmed with fans hoping to get a glimpse of the actors. ‘We couldn’t go out as much. By the second film we couldn’t go out at all. One night we were in the hotel room and we were trapped. We were playing Twilight the board game because Kellen Lutz went out and bought it. If fans knew that’s how we were hanging out… Ashley Greene actually won the game too.’ With the intense attention paid to the Twilight cast and decades of being in the business; Peter says he still, to this day, feels the intense pressures to perform every time he acts. ‘Every role you take on you want to throw up. You think how am I going to pull this off? And you learn about yourself in every role and put a little bit of yourself into it.’ ‘I think if I don’t get nervous, I shouldn’t have taken the role.’ He says ‘Everyone can be an actor’ but quickly clarifies not ‘everyone has the ability to emote. It’s about dialing back certain character traits.’ He is now taking on an entirely new role however. Peter has his first directorial debut in Breaking and Exiting starring Milo Gibson - Mel Gibson’s son.

24

25

Button Up: Club Monaco Blazer: Brooks Brothers

Peter explains the new challenges he faces from the other side of the camera. ‘I really love the idea of directing, it’s the ultimate role of storytelling. You choose every song, how every moment will play out. You’re working with a huge team of people - the composer, the time manager, the set directions, everything is a director’s choice.’ With his career soaring, he also has figured out a balance in his family life, as he and actress Jennie Garth have split custody of their three girls from their marriage that officially ended in 2013. The parents have done a beautiful job at co-parenting and were even spotted on vacation with their significant others earlier in the year with their children in tow. ‘I get the kids one week on and one week off so we share the kids 50/50, but if they have games and events we are both there. We talk all the time about co-parenting and the kids. I really like her husband and I think he’s a great guy.’ Peter has nothing but love and respect for Jennie and says ‘People come into your life for a reason and relationships can change and just because we aren’t living together doesn’t mean you can’t love each other. I think once, there was a time where we had to learn that we had to be able to move forward with love and respect.’ It wasn’t always easy for the former couple to navigate their post marital life as they do now. ‘Once a break up happens you need to go through the healing process first. Love is blind and hindsight is twenty-twenty.’ ‘As long as mom and dad are happy, the kids are happy. Anyone going through a breakup should know, kids need to see mom and dad happy. As long as they know they’re happy, they know they will be ok.’ In the meantime Peter is looking forward to their next big trip as a blended family. ‘We are now talking about what we’re going to do for Christmas together.’

THE LISTENING ROOM

PARTYNEXTDOOR Setting the mood, an artist matures. It’s always said that solo work requires a different level of self-realization. A level he wasn’t always comfortable with. Jahron Anthony Brathwaite, or as you may know him, PartyNextDoor is making waves in the music industry since his debut in 2013, PARTYNEXTDOOR. His music evokes deep emotions from listeners, often leaving you reminiscing on past relationships making you long for something you’ve been missing. Party’s formula has been perfected throughout these four years, combining evocative and airy production with strong songwriting to craft some of the best R&B songs of this time.

Jesse Metcalfe Photographed by John Russo

LAPALMEMAGAZINE.COM

Recently released COLOURS 2 EP and Seven Days provide proof of his growth with eleven tracks consistent with solid songwriting and depth. COLOURS 2 is recorded entirely over production from longtime collaborator G.Ry. The EP sticks to the script of Party’s vibe. Mysterious, but incredibly honest. Melodic, but ambiguous. Sexual, but vulnerable. It’s this type of ambience that describes OVO’s most sluggish and savage romantic records, so many of which were courtesy of Party and his penmanship.

COLOURS 2 OVO Sound

Party’s vocals consistently shine on this EP, putting him lightyears ahead of his would-be imitators. Seven Days was never intended to be an EP, but a collection of songs recorded over a seven day period. Because Party proves to shine brightest on laid-back production, his track “Better Man” featuring Rick Ross is the standout track from the project. “The Right Way” shows Party’s versatility across genres, shining on another laid-back cut letting the raw emotions of his lyrics take the front stage. Dez Wright and Cardiak team up to provide Party with impressive production on “Never Played Me,” while Party experiments with different flows while rapping about how loyal his love interest was to him. The Prince influences are heavy on the final track, “Love Me Againe” so it is only right that Party give us an impreesive vocal performance, reaching falsettos we don’t normally hear from him.

By: Dakota LaPalme @kotasaurusrex

Opener “Peace of Mind” shows Party’s ability to smoothly ride a beat and provide vocals that complement the atmosphere. “Freak In You,” a standout on the EP combines lyrics of listening to Jodeci while paying homage to the groups 1995 single “Freakin You.” This track is reminiscent of his classic track “Persian Rugs” and just like that it highlights his talent at setting a mood. “Rendezvous,” with similar sonic structure is lyrically about Party trying to convince his love interest to hook up with him. The conviction in his voice is the selling point- with a voice like that it’s hard to say no.

THE 7TH ANNUAL

L.A. FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

32

It was closing in on the end of another overheated L.A. summer, the time of the SoCal year when revealing slip dresses slit-up-to-there are only matched in reveal by manorexics manifest in tight-tighter-tightest t-shirts and jeans. Still, all modicum of whatever sliver was left of modesty, moderation and abstention went out the window for this hedonistic holiday of eating and drinking fest: the 7th Annual L.A. Food & Wine Festival. The crowd of hundreds on opening night August 25 was doing its prescribed duty and imbibing pretty much everything in sight: wine, food, sweets, more wine – whatever wasn’t nailed down. A three night and four day gourmet bacchanal – for those hearty souls who could take advantage of all the many nibbles, lunches, cooking demos and goodies – is everyone’s idea of great time, except the overworked rock star celebrity chefs, sommeliers and vintners who served and poured - ad infinitum - their way through the parking lot-cum-plaza in front of DTLA’s Disney Hall and the Broad Museum, the same Grand Avenue locale at HBO’s Game of Thrones’ premier. And many chefs also presided over special Friday, Saturday and Sunday lunches at Craft, Maude, Michael’s in Santa Monica, Redbird – with celebrated local and national culinary all-stars in that big mix, including Nancy Silverton, Neal Fraser, Rory Herrman, Justin Hilbert and more.

33

Restaurants Maude and Gwen owner and Top Chef alum Curtis Stone kicked off all the festivities Thursday night as part of the Ultimate Bites of L.A., a walk-around tasting event where guests heartily took up the opportunity to sample dishes from several of the city’s most exciting culinary neighborhoods. In fact, 30 chefs were serving up divine little dishes, accompanied by over 100 wines that flowed like tap water, as people kept getting back in line right after each swig. Naturally, there were lines – but they were definitely worth waiting on, as long as one had a plastic glass of crispy Chardonnay on hand. Or a few. The wall to wall booths on the outdoor plaza Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights – and Saturday and Sunday afternoons – included food bites from Helene An at Crustacean, Kaleo Adams at the Polo Lounge, David Codney at the Peninsula, Chris Ford at the Four Seasons; plus finger food – some messy, some bite-sized – from Hatchet Hall, The Cut, Gwen, Love & Salt, Felix, Water Grill, The Bazaar, Republique, Petty Cash and Mozza. Vintages at the crowded wine and food booths included whites and reds from Tuscany, Australia, Monterey, Santa Inez, Napa, Paso Robles, New Zealand, Spain, including: Cielo Y Tierra, Chapoutier, DeBortoli, Hess, Flowers, MacRostie, Somerston, Tablas Creek, Round Pond Estate, and on and on. Friday was the big day for the A-list power lunches: Brian Malarkey of The Taste and Top Chef fame co-hosted with John Tesarof Knife at Highland at his Ivory on Sunset eatery, while the James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Chef Award of2014 winner Nancy Silverton of Mozza fame is partnered with Jonathan Waxman of Barbuto NYC, Sang Yoonof Lukshon, Top Chef runner-up Brooke Williamson and Miles Thompson of Michael’s at the latter’s Santa Monica eatery. Sarah Gruenenberg of Monteverde held court at Craft to plate up with that eatery’s chefs, Denis Crutchfield and Shannon Swindle; Justin Hilbert hosted at Maude; Neal Fraser joined by Rory Herrmann of Barrel & Ashes and Trey Foshee of Georges at the Cove at his downtown restaurant, Redbird. Kevin Nashan of the Sidney Street Café and Ryan Ososky served up a deux at Ososky’s The Church Key. Food Network star Tyler Florence was the man of the hour on Saturday evening, where he hosted LIVE on Grand, featuring a musical performance by Wyclef Jean. And as if that wasn’t enough - last but not least was the bang-up two-day Lexus Grand Tasting at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, which featured over 25 celebrity chefs including Lexus Culinary Master Jon Shook of Animal, Son of a Gun and Trois Mec fame, Evan Funke of Felix and Malarkey—and 200 wines to sample. On Sunday, the culinary stars were Silverton, Shook and Top Chef alum Dakota Weiss of Sweetfin Poke. And those poor – or lucky, depending on how you look at it – imbibers of everything the fest had to offer. Pepto Bismol was the gourmet swish most gulped down on Monday, no doubt. Tuesday was likely followed by a diet and an alcohol-free week – or month. LaPalme was a proud media sponsor.

ALONG COMES A

SPYDER

A quick glance at the performance numbers it produces reveals a 0-60mph sprint that takes just 3.2 seconds which is not quick, that’s fast and 0-124mph takes a mere 9.6 seconds. The top speed with the roof up is identical to the 570S Coupe at 204mph. With the top down it will do 196mph, which means it’s a seriously fast tanning booth. The McLaren 570S Spider combines dynamism and the exhilaration of open-air driving. Hand-assembled in Woking, England, the 570S Spider has a key attribute its competitors doesn’t, lightweight carbon fiber construction. Thanks to the strength and rigidity of the basic McLaren MonoCell II carbon chassis, the 570S Spider requires no additional bracing or reinforcement to quell wobbles. The two-seat, rear-wheel drive 570S Spider is the third body-style in the McLaren Sports Series portfolio, and it adds an integrated, retractable hardtop that when lowered delivers an immersive driving experience that adds sounds unavailable in a closed car.

Written By Darryle Moody @darryle_moodynm Photos By Getty Images And Darryle Moody

I tend to have a soft spot for cabriolets and roadsters. I grew up in Minnesota, a region of the country that isn’t particularly well known for lengthy summers and some would say is not conducive to top-down motoring. So when I saw the first pictures of the new McLaren 570S Spider it would have sufficed to say I was, completely blindsided. The want was strong and just wanted to drive it, anywhere. There is just something about going for a drive with no where in particular as the destination. The two-seater has some selfish aspects, not a lot room for things to take with you. Just room for a couple of small bags and a desire for adventure. The 570S Spider is powered by a McLaren’s ubiquitous compact 3.8liter twin-turbo V8 engine and it is very potent. It puts out a serious 562 horsepower and 443-lb/ft of torque and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that goes unchanged from the 570S Coupe, so it’s really no surprise to find the performance of the Spider is very much the same, which can be described as scintillating.

36

The two-piece roof which is constructed of lightweight composite panels creates a purposeful, sleek appearance whether closed or lowered. The roof can be opened or closed in just 15 seconds, at vehicle speeds of up to 25mph. The introduction of the 570S Spider McLaren brings it into the Luxury Performance Sports Car segment that has a plethora of high-powered machines. McLaren Automotive positions the Sport Series 570 models to start where Porsche ends with the Turbo S models. The 570S Spider finds itself squaring off against two main competitors, Porsche’s 911 (991.2) Turbo S Cabriolet and the new Audi R8 V10 Spyder. From the high tech engineering, sharp looks, worldclass performance and usability for every day use the new McLaren 570S Spider is a fulfilling drive. An open top performance vehicle is about the experience, the wind and the sounds all combine to make it enjoyable. So, who’s ready for a three day weekend? Pack light and don’t forget sunblock and your sunglasses. I highly recommend a 570S Spider in Curaçao Blue because your getaway car should be fast and fun.

DESTINATION:

HELSINKI

Stay Stay in style at the Klaus K Hotel, located in the city center in an old Art Nouveau building with interiors inspired by Finnish folklore. Each hotel room is uniquely created in collaboration with some of Finland’s most famous contemporary artists. I particularly like the massive custom headboards that command entire walls in each of the rooms and the playful references to Kalevala lore.

Shop The Design District Helsinki is a deep dive into Finnish design and shopping. Located in the center of Helsinki, this cluster of more than 200 creative businesses spans 25 streets and includes design and antique shops, fashion stores, museums, art galleries, restaurants and showrooms. The district is divided into themed walkable routes for design enthusiasts.

By Karen LeBlanc @designtourist

I suspect there is something about sitting in a communal sauna (a favorite Finnish pastime) that gets the creative juices flowing in Helsinki, a UNESCO City of Design and a 2012 World Design Capital. This capital city of Finland is muse to internationally celebrated architects, designers and artists. Modernist Architect Alvar Aalto’s life’s work shaped the cityscape with 14 of his buildings and produced the iconic Finnish brand Artek. The city is also the cradle of beloved lifestyle brands Iittala, Arabia and Marimekko. Although design runs deep in Helsinki’s DNA, there is nothing elitist about it. More than half a million people living on this peninsula jutting into the Baltic sea share a democratic sensibility about creativity. Helsinki aims to become “the world’s most functional city by 2021” and has appointed a Chief Design Officer to make it happen. Not to be confused with Danish hygge or Scandinavian minimalism, the Finns have their own version of design, influenced by modernism and Mother Nature. The city is circled by shoreline with 300 nearby islands and one-third of its area occupied by forests and green spaces. Although part of the Scandinavian peninsula shared by Norway and Sweden, the Finns have a non-Scandinavian sense of self with their own language that defies categorization. Perhaps this oft-repeated saying best explains the distinction: “The Finns design it; the Swedes manufacture it; the Danes sell it and the Norwegians buy it.” As a design traveler in search of destinations that inspire creativity, Helsinki’s siren call is irresistible. Here is my must-see list of design, architecture and foodie culture for curious, creative minds.

38

The Arabia district is another haven for design lovers that centers around the Arabia ceramics factory dating back to 1873. The modern Arabia center at the factory serves as an outlet for Finnish design including lifestyle brands Iittala and Arabia. Iittala glass, founded in 1881, produces Alvar Aalto’s iconic Savoy vases designed in 1936. While there, tour the Design Museum Arabia and the Design Lab housing studios of working artists. The Esplanade, Helsinki’s main grand boulevard connecting much of the central part of the city, offers upscale stores and flagship stores of Finland’s most beloved brands including Artek, Marimekko and Iittala. The promenade runs through the central part of the city ending at the harbor area. Each May, Marimekko, known for its fashion, accessories and interior design products, stages a freeto-the-public, open-air fashion show in nearby Esplanadi Park. Another design hot spot is the Tori Quarters, between the Market Square and Senate Square, populated with neoclassical buildings that house artisanal shops showcasing a variety of handmade products. For foodie culture and fresh markets, Abattoir is city’s culinary center with garden markets and festivals.

See While at the Design District, pop into the Design Museum and tour the permanent collection of Finnish design from the late 19th century to today. The 140-year-old museum also presents special exhibitions on the latest trends in Finnish, Scandinavian and international design. Next, walk over to the Museum of Finnish Architecture in the middle of the Design District, Finland’s only architecture museum. Founded in 1956 and housed in a neo-Renaissance edifice, the museum features Finnish and international touring exhibitions, a permanent exhibition on 19th century Finnish Architecture and architecture walking tours of the city.

Tour Modernist architecture aficionados will want to check out the northern-central neighborhood of Pihlajamäki the only protected modernist era suburb of Helsinki with DOCOMOMO status (an organization preserving the architectural heritage of modernism). For Alvar Aalto fans Finlandia Hall is modernist must-see. The concert and events hall captures the essence of Aalto’s humanistic approach to modernism—a mixture of organic resources, self-expression and fresh progression. His personal home, the Aalto House, is also open to the public. Designed 1936 using simple uncluttered materials, the home doubled as a work studio until 1955, when he designed Studio Aalto to house his expanding practice, a short walk from his home, at Tiilimäki 20 in Munkkiniemi.

Experience During the winter months, Helsinki sees about six to eight hours of daylight with the sun rising at 9 a.m.-ish and setting at 3 p.m.-ish. Taking advantage of longer nights, the city shines the light on art and culture with special events during those months. The Lux Helsinki light festival takes place in Jan. 6-10th in the city center featuring public installations of light art along the main route between the Market Square and the Kruununhaka district at the darkest time of the year. The free, family-friendly festival showcases the works of most exciting artists from Finland and all-around the world. During the Christmas season, public spaces come alive with Helsinki’s many Christmas markets including one in Senate Square and a Christmas Festival at the Cable Factory. The holiday season kicks off at the end of November with the opening of the Christmas Street along Aleksanterinkatu. An aside tip—you are looking for an ideal place to view the famed Northern Lights, Helsinki is not your optimal choice because of its southerly located and cloud cover. You are better off traveling outside the city to into Northern Lapland.

Relax Just as early European coffeehouses fostered an exchange of ideas, I suspect many creative sparks in modern-day Finland originate in the sauna. The Finns love to sweat and socialize in public and private saunas which explains why the country has more than 3 million saunas and 20 public saunas in Helsinki. I recommend a visit to the Loyly public sauna in Hernesaari district on the southern tip of Helsinki. The eco-friendly, seaside complex includes a traditional Finnish smoke sauna, two other wood-heated saunas, a year-round terrace and a restaurant. After sweating it out, consider braving the Finnish tradition of swimming in the winter by diving into the Baltic Sea. Closer to the city center, the Allas Sea Pool boasts several saunas, swimming pools and restaurant. No matter the season, Helsinki delivers; whether you time a visit during Helsinki Design Week held in September, take advantage of the long summer days or celebrate the holiday season. CORINTHIA: THE JEWEL OF BUDAPEST The perfect blend of old world opulence and modern classicism, The Corinthia Budapest is one of the most desired hotels in Eastern Europe. LAPALME magazine’s creative director and international style guru, Derek Warburton tells a tale of pure luxury within one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

By Derek Warburton @derekwarburton

50

51

The summer of my dreams is now a distant memory. I had never been to Eastern Europe but I had been asked to be the Style Ambassador of Feeric Fashion week in Transylvania and I couldn’t resist a full adventure. Eastern Europe, was a fantasy land of breathtaking architecture, the Orient Express and of course every coveted spy movie I had ever seen. When the opportunity came for me to visit Hungary and of course stay at my beloved Corinthia, my head was bursting with the possibilities of exhilarating adventure. The Corinthia Budapest was originally the Grand Hotel Royal with its opening in 1896 as the hub of the 19th century international elite. The hotel has gone through many modifications to become what it is today. Best known for its gorgeous spa, the property has a sense of comfortable entitlement. I am a regular guest of the Corinthia hotels. As many of our readers know that I have a special place in my heart for Corinthia Malta (as many of you read in our Fall ‘16 issue) and of course Corinthia London. But, Budapest has its own personality and an essence of a time gone by. Although meticulously renovated, when the double doors swung open on arrival I felt that I was in a different world. The boldness of the marble in the lobby, its grand staircase that felt like Audrey Hepburn would be cascading in the famed red gown of Funny Face and the depth of the wood panels made me feel like i was in another time. As i entered my room for the first time, it felt of great

52

warmth. Like Corinthia London, each room had a charm of stark white sheets, golden hues offset from dark woods. My view was of a grand courtyard and a cafe below that was encased in glass to make everyday the perfect time to sit “outside” even with the unpredictable weather of Hungary. One of most important moments of the Corinthia experience was the private tour with their resident historian and concierge, Santo. This gentleman made the trip. Santo has been with the hotel since the 60’s before it was even Corinthia. What I loved about the tour, is that the hotel had collages of the hotels history and much of the private photos from years past were actually of Santo from when he was a waiter in the 1960’s serving many of the VIP’s. Not only is his personal history fascinating but he is a riot. Always cracking little jokes, he walked me through the grand ballroom, the back halls and of course the crown jewel of the property, the Royal Spa. The space has been renovated, of course, but is a remnant of the original hotel. Now called Espa, the hotel treated me to one of its relaxing facials. For anyone in the know, the Espa experience is one of the most renowned in the world. Budapest will always live in my heart as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The romance of the experience was ethereal, the history, the freedom of thought and possibilites was fantastical. But the bedrock of my grand experience was my wonderful stay at Corinthia.
