Beal, 30, a three-time All-Star and one-time All-NBA selection, now arrives in Phoenix with a nearly $50 million contract, making him one of the league’s six highest-paid players, surpassed only by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic, and his teammate Durant.
Miami was among the options for the shooting guard, but he ultimately chose to form a trio of scorers in the Suns.
A new “super team” for Durant
Kevin Durant’s quest for a third championship ring with a “super team” enters a new chapter, following his involvement in two of the top 15 Big-3s in history, according to The Sportster, with Oklahoma City (KD, Russell Westbrook and James Harden) and Golden State (KD, Stephen Curry, and Klay Thompson).
Apart from his short time in Phoenix, Durant’s most recent experience of this kind was alongside Harden and Kyrie Irving in Brooklyn. However, his new team is perhaps more comparable to the 20162019 Warriors, where Draymond Green played a role as the fourth star, similar to DeAndre Ayton’s potential role.
The challenge for the Suns will be filling out the rest of their roster, as they have limited flexibility to add many players beyond minimum contracts for veterans. Phoenix will be an intriguing destination for players willing to accept lower salaries for a genuine opportunity to contend for a championship.
The franchise is coming off two conference semifinal losses in addition to reaching the finals in 202021. Their “all-in” gamble will be to find the perfect chemistry in the Western Conference to dethrone the reigning champions, the Denver Nuggets.
