La NBA ha hecho por fin pública la sanción a Ja Morant. El base de los Grizzlies, que, tras varios problemas extradeportivos, reincidió exhibiéndose con un arma en un video de Instagram, se perderá los primeros 25 partidos de la temporada 2023-24, y podrían ser más si no cumple una serie de requisitos. La NBA le exigirá que se someta a un programa organizado por la propia liga en el que se abordarán las circunstancias que le llevaron a repetir dicho comportamiento, y tendrá que superarlo para reincorporarse.

“La decisión de Morant de volver a exhibirse empuñando un arma en redes sociales es alarmante y preocupante dado que ya fue suspendido con ocho partidos durante el mes de marzo por el mismo motivo”, anunció el comisionado Adam Silver en un comunicado. “En concreto, nos preocupa especialmente la posibilidad de que otros jóvenes repitan esta conducta. Dadas estas circunstancias, creemos que la suspensión de 25 partidos es apropiada y deja claro que este tipo de actitudes irresponsables con armas no van a ser toleradas”.

La sanción no sólo le tendrá apartado de dichos 25 encuentros, sino que le obligará a estar al margen de cualquier actividad pública de la liga o de su equipo, incluidos los choques de pretemporada. Su regreso se producirá por tanto a mediados del mes de diciembre, aunque habrá que esperar a la publicación del calendario para conocer la fecha exacta.

Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies has been suspended for 25 games, the league announced last week. The suspension comes as a result of his second incident involving holding a gun in a social media video, and according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, conditions for his return will be included.

Shortly after the league announced his punishment, Morant released a statement apologizing for his actions and vowing to be better.

“I’ve had time to reflect and I realize how much hurt I’ve caused,” Morant said in the statement. “I want to apologize to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my teammates and the city of Memphis. To Adam Silver, Zach Kleiman and Robert Pera -- who gave me the opportunity to be a professional athlete and have supported me -- I’m sorry for the harm I’ve done. To the kids who look up to me, I’m sorry for failing you as a role model. I promise I’m going to be better”.

The Grizzlies also released a statement backing the decision made by the commissioner.

“We respect the League’s decision to suspend Ja Morant following this latest episode. Our standards as a league and team are clear, and we expect that all team personnel will adhere to them.”

Los Memphis Showboats no bajaron demasiado la cabeza después de que los Birmingham Stallions les cerraran oficialmente la puerta a cualquier posibilidad de avanzar a los playoffs de la USFL. Los campeones del 2022 vencieron a los Showboats 27-20 dentro del Simmons Liberty Bank Stadium.

Memphis (5-5) esperaba forzar un empate triple con los New Orleans Breakers y los Houston Gamblers por el último puesto de la División Sur en los playoffs. Una victoria contra los Stallions (8-2) era la primera ficha de dominó que tenía que caer para darle una oportunidad a los Showboats.

“Desafortunadamente, no terminó como todos queríamos que terminara”, dijo el entrenador Todd Haley. “Pero así son las cosas. No estaba destinado a ser. No fue por falta de esfuerzo, de intensidad, de cariño por este equipo y este partido”.

Memphis (5-5) was hoping to force a three-way tie with the New Orleans Breakers and the Houston Gamblers for the final South Division spot in the playoffs. A win against the Stallions (82) was the first domino that needed to fall in order to give the Showboats a chance.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t end the way we all wanted it to end today, and be alive and rooting for other teams,” coach Todd Haley said. “But that’s just the way it is. It wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t because of lack of effort or intensity, or care for this team and this game.”

The Stallions, who already clinched a playoff berth before the game, will be the top seed out of the South. As for the Showboats, they’ll have to wait until Year 3 of the USFL for another crack at the postseason.
