VINCENT VAN DUYSEN: A DAY IN ANTWERP
The works of Vincent Van Duysen are linear, quiet and powerful. Whether he is creating large scale architecture, minimalist interiors, furniture or products, his designs are defined by integrity, tactility and functionality. At the same time, he has an energetic approach to life dynamic and full of passion. 2022 marks Van Duysen’s 60th year. We take this opportunity to celebrate his lighting design, and ask him about his work, inspirations, and dreams. Van Duysen takes us along for a day in Antwerp, showing us his favourite spots in his city, as well as some of the spaces he designed, from the majestic August Hotel to the marble-clad, monolithic volumes of the Copyright bookshop. As we walk through the city’s landmarks, we discover the world of Van Duysen through his ideas, dreams and creative approach, and explore the designs he has created in collaboration with Flos.

ROSA BERTOLI
you do?
How would you describe who you are, and what
You live and work in Antwerp. Why did you decide to base yourself here? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN I was born in Flanders, studied in Ghent and then lived in Milan. Shortly after, I came across my first home, which I fell in love with. And so I settled there because it felt like home. ROSA BERTOLI
I am a very creative and driven person. I am energetic, and passionate about what I do. I like to live my life to the fullest, yet in a controlled way. I am intuitive and emotional.
VINCENT VAN DUYSEN
How did you become interested in design? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN As a child, my parents educated me across many different artistic disciplines, and these became the primary influences for my appreciation and understanding of beauty. From a very young age, I fostered a natural talent for creativity. I chose architecture because it covers so many aspects of all of the applied arts, it is an all-round field of study. However, it could have easily been photography, cinema, painting, dance. Architecture gave (and still gives) me the opportunity to express my creativity in many different ways and to contribute to the art of living. Overall, and frankly speaking, I think it’s about raw talent, and a natural gift.
What makes Antwerp special? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN Antwerp is a hub of creativity, a multicultural and creative destination. It’s a small city but a cosmopolitan allure - think of the Flemish painters. Antwerp has a strong link with the global fashion community through its fashion academy (hence the famous antwerp six of the 1980s). But in the city are also many photographers, designers, choreographers, theatre authors, and culinary talents.
What have been the most important moments, achievements and milestones of your career so far? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN It’s ongoing. Every day has its uniqueness about what I am doing. It’s about the process, continuity and consistency.

for you?
What does a typical day in Antwerp look like
Home, office, gym. Spending time with my dogs, enjoying home and work.
VINCENT VAN DUYSEN
ROSA BERTOLI Meeting people seems to be a key element of your life in Antwerp. Who are the people who are part of your community, and how did you meet them? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN In general, I am a very social and open minded person, so I am quite engaged with my surroundings and community. On the other hand, as I get older I like to spend more time on my own. But I still hang out and am connected with a group of old pals from the city. I am not a social butterfly; but I am social with my old friends. Now I enjoy spending a lot of time at home with my dogs, my partner Mateo and my father.
How would you describe your design philosophy? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN My design and architecture are human centric, unique. I like to surprise, and I hate repetition. My work is complex yet very controlled and balanced. I aim for timelessness. I am a fellow of the Gesamtkunstwerk. My focus goes beyond the world of architecture itself. It’s about my own company and the companies or external partners I work with, such as Flos. ROSA BERTOLI
What is a dream project that you haven’t done yet? This is twofold: one dream project would be realising something related to spirituality, such as a church or chapel, a temple of worship or a monastery. But it could also be an art gallery or museum, a space related to art, since I am an avid collector. Art is a big part of my life ROSA BERTOLI
VINCENT VAN DUYSEN
ROSA BERTOLI As well as spaces, architecture and furniture, you have excelled in the design of lighting. How does your background influence your lighting designs? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN It’s part of the architecture itself. You don’t have any space without light, so it is quite obvious to work with artificial and natural light to create living spaces.
ROSA BERTOLI In 2022, you are celebrating your 60th year. What is your creative vision for the next 60 years? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN I wish to keep up the pace and my creativity. I want to age in a youthful way and carry on with my creativity for the next couple of decades.

You also designed a desk lamp, which then became a floor reading lamp. What can you tell us about Oblique? VINCENT VAN DUYSEN Oblique was envisioned as a revolutionary, professional table lamp, the natural evolution of the classic office swing arm model. Flos came to us with a new lens technology, so we needed to find a way to put it into fruition. We also strived to conceal the mechanism. The final design is a very multifunctional and versatile reading lamp, it’s the ultimate reading light, it’s not intrusive. ROSA BERTOLI

At each location, the lamp’s soft glow charmingly graces the tables, contributing to the setting’s atmosphere. Van Duysen created a fitting design to adapt to different interiors and moods, versatile yet distinctive in its minimalist, sophisticated forms. 21
MEXICO CITY Rosetta
Unfold to discover the technical details of Gustave
Owner Elena Reygadas describes Rosetta as ‘a living organism’: located in a large mansion in Mexico City’s Roma neighbourhood, the restaurant’s menu is based on seasonality and availability of fresh ingredients. Each space has a unique character, guests dine within a tropical atmosphere by day, surrounded by plants and natural light. At night, subdued illumination contributes to a mysterious, intimate atmosphere. ‘What matters the most is the experience inside the restaurant,’ says Reygadas. ‘I seek to use a type of lighting that generates pleasant atmospheres and invites customers to enjoy the space.’ Photography by Pia Riverola. 23

NEW YORK Saga
‘Eating at Saga is meant to feel like you’re dining in the home of a fancy friend,’ says chef James Kent. Set on the top four floors of an Art Deco building in New York, originally conceived as a bachelor pad, its intimate interiors boast uninterrupted views of the city and were designed with light in mind. Light is a big deal at Saga: ‘I’m never more acutely aware of light than I am when I’m sitting in the dining room,’ continues Kent. ‘I see the shadows move across the carpet in the late afternoon then watch the sun set over the skyline and the lights in Manhattan skyscrapers cascade on.’ At night, the space is meant to feel like it’s lit by candlelight: ‘lighting in a restaurant is all about creating a mood, so I tend toward warmer options. As long as diners can see what’s on the plate, I’m satisfied.’ Photography by Brian W. Ferry. 30

BERLIN Lode & Stijn
Lode van Zuylen and Stijn Remi run this small Berlin restaurant focusing on natural produce in a relaxed atmosphere. ‘When we opened the restaurant, we didn’t really think deeply about a perfect light plan,’ admits van Zuylen. Local design studio Labolleur took care of the lighting in the space (which includes Achille Castiglioni’s Frisbi for Flos). ‘These lights aren’t just really beautiful objects, but the light that gets reflected is really great for a table setting as it is not a spotlight. It brings the people at the table even more together.’ Photography by Volker Conradus. 35

The result we wanted to achieve was precise but at the same time fluctuating and vibrant, just like the space that welcomes it.’ The final effect is very delicate, but with a high aesthetic impact. ‘Not having to deal with the technical areas, we worked on sensuality, on the color of light and on the way it related with the details of the period architecture that Tadao Ando has restored to its former glory.’

For the entrance hall, the response was a Horizontal Light: an interlocking structure composed of five tubular elements of glass and aluminum measuring six meters each and parallelly positioned. The Horizontal Lights are installations suspended from the ceiling above the entrance, in a groupage of five. Each glass cylinder was made near Venice with cast glass technology

Finally, their work appears in the restaurant, an area whose contemporary design lacks the challenge of confrontation with period architecture. For this space, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec kept the dialogue between opposites alive. ‘In the restaurant we partly used the invention of vertical light but also set up the individual tables with simple, nice lamps, which rest on a wrought iron base, and work with a small, very soft, rechargeable light source,’ they note.

Creating contemporary interventions within historical settings always pose a challenge for designers. But the special nature of the Bourse de Commerce’s architecture made it a double challenge for Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. This was in part due to the exceptional nature of the space, originally conceived in the eighteenth century: with its huge glass dome, the Bourse is an absolute landmark of the French capital, an imposing building full of history. On the other hand, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s lighting project was set to interact with a special setting: the reinterpretation by Tadao Ando, the architect who best of all is able to transform palaces into cultural temples, with great sobriety mixed with poetry – all while providing contemporary art pieces with a powerful voice.

FLOS STUDIOS
A conversation with Pritchard Themis
Self described as ‘a little compact studio in East London’, since 2004 Pritchard Themis have created lighting projects for high end commercial and residential clients, and beyond. From functional light for aeroplanes and lobbies to scenographic illuminations for facades and sacred spaces, the studio’s expertise has stretched as far as light will go. We sit down with founders and directors Peter Pritchard and Alexis Themis, to find out more about their approach to lighting, working with Flos products and the latest iteration of Light Shadow. How would you describe your studio’s personality? We are very collaborative, both within the studio itself and with architects, interior designers and clients: this is the only way to arrive at a sensible conclusion for any design process. Our design is concept-heavy: we like to really battle ideas through. We have always thought that the most exciting thing we ever did was get around the table with a lot of people, discussing ideas, because if you’re not doing that, why would you bother to do lighting? ALEXIS THEMIS We are always questioning what we’re doing and that’s important to avoid ending up with the same solutions over and over again. All design is borrowed of course, it’s about trying to see how you can best apply what you’ve learned previously with a new scheme or project paths. PETER PRITCHARD There’s an art critic in the UK, he used to say that there are two types of art: there’s the “oh wow!” and there’s the “so what?” and you do want to be in the “oh wow!’ but you don’t want to just be grandstanding for the sake of it. I think our studio is about something fancy with nuance as well, so you’re not gonna get tired of it.
the natural changing ambient conditions. And that’s what we try to introduce into working environments, traditionally conceived as static spaces. We have always been very keen advocates to the use of varying colour temperature and light intensity throughout the course of the day, to try to imbue the space with a level of dynamism – because if you’re there for eight hours a day you need some sort of pointers more than just the view outside the window. Your immediate environment should respond to changing conditions. PETER PRITCHARD There’s a real trick to try and put those extra beats of vibrancy into these spaces: you need to have interesting views to look across at; these things are incredibly important for a working environment. ALEXIS THEMIS But also as a counterpoint, lighting design is as much about absence of light as it is about light. It’s about contrast, texture, and nuance. It’s about allowing the eye to slowly travel across the space, using light as a specific element. It’s not about uniformity, as far as we are concerned.
FLOS
PETER PRITCHARD
FLOS Sustainability is a central theme for design today. How have things changed since you started working in this field? PETER PRITCHARD Lighting technology has advanced so much in the past 10, 15 years. In the old days we used to do what we call a “cat-a” office in the UK, which is where you light the whole office, and now that’s changing for the better in office design. Clients are thinking about how to make these spaces more sustainable, things are done more responsibly. ALEXIS THEMIS We have been having interesting conversations around commercial office spaces. The traditional approach was always “let’s light the whole space to a specific level with specific uniformity”. But you don’t inhabit the whole office space: we have our work surfaces where we put the majority of the light, the rest of it is more incidental. This way we can use the right amount of light in the right place and be a bit more considerate about where we apply the light and reduce maintenance costs at the same time.
Where did your passion for lighting come from? PETER PRITCHARD We both came into lighting from slightly different paths. Alexis has an engineering background and I came from theatre lighting, but we found a happy medium in between. ALEXIS THEMIS I was always intrigued about how we respond differently to the built environment. I understood that lighting was one of the key drivers in how you perceive a space; that picked my interest. I asked myself: how can we make our environment more coherent with what we are trying to do? In environmental design there is always that human component to the built environment that fascinated me and drove me as a designer in the first instance. PETER PRITCHARD We were both highly influenced by artist James Turrell. I remember watching a Turell artwork and thinking about the fact that his work is very much about the meeting space: you sit and you observe, and lighting is not just about that sudden moment. It is about spending a whole day there, it’s not about that instantaneous moment. It’s the whole wow moment, but it has to create something that people can live through as an experience. FLOS
FLOS Let’s talk about residential projects. In the past couple of years the separation of domestic and working spaces has been widely discussed. The boundaries have blurred. How has this influenced the use of light? PETER PRITCHARD That kind of lighting needs to maintain domestic quality while providing uniformity and glare control. Because the home office might be a big room but it’s still very much a box, and yet your client is going to spend maybe eight or nine hours there, so you have to give them that adaptability. Approaching home office lighting is like creating a sanctuary for people. Even if your lighting is the same at home as it is in the office, you must have something that says “I’m at work”, something that will help create that ambience and set your mood. ALEXIS THEMIS It taps into the idea of how you can support people’s perceived levels of comfort in their environment, whether it’s a conventional office space or home office, the level of control that they feel they’re able to exercise over their working environment is key. A simple task light that you can turn on and off can make all the difference in any environment. Being at home, that can transform your kitchen table into a workstation. That sense of control is really very powerful and to provide people with that is important we believe.
How do you approach your work? The building gives you context, but it is how you shape that can actually create one’s experience of the space. What drives us is a push to make the space feel better, how can we make people feel more positive when they are in the space. PETER PRITCHARD We did a lot of work for British Airways and I think this project encapsulates how you approach a lighting job. When you first board the plane, as a designer you need to create an excitement to fly, set the branding through light. And once you’re in a seat and you’re flying you’re gonna be there for many many hours, working, sleeping, or eating, the lighting has to change, it has to feel more comfortable, more relaxed. What you’re experiencing needs to be on a much more sympathetic and subliminal level. And also of course, you need lighting that is going to direct you around the plane, and it needs to change quite discreetly. You need to set the right lighting for all of this. FLOS
ALEXIS THEMIS
What’s the challenge when lighting a space? Natural light is dynamic, and artificial light should be; if it has to sit comfortably within a context, it has to follow FLOS

FLOS How do you use Flos products in your work? How do they suit your way of working on projects? ALEXIS THEMIS For us, it is fundamental to understand what we need the light to do, how we want to shape the lighting, what surface and what levels of illumination. Then we consider what form that light has to take, does the luminaire need to have a presence? Flos fittings are conceived very much as part of the architecture, they allow us to provide more articulation to the space, not just in terms of the light but in terms of the form of its source. PETER PRITCHARD They are always beautifully thought through: you place a Flos fitting on the table and it’s clear it’s nicely made, the materials are well-considered. And once it’s on the ceiling, it becomes a statement piece: you are looking at these things when you walk into a space, there’s an elegance in them. ALEXIS THEMIS For the higher end residential projects we work on, what goes in has to be something more sophisticated, and Flos lighting is thought of nicely, with both the architectural aesthetics but also the client’s aspiration. PETER PRITCHARD It’s also always reassuring that with the Flos fittings, we know we can rely on them, they’re not gonna fail and that’s why we tend to go back to the same manufacturers for the high end projects. ALEXIS THEMIS The after sales support we are given is equally important: if there is a problem, it’s a phone call, they are invested in maintaining and supporting the project beyond the point of sale.
We haven’t fully explored its potential, but its quality and the optical control is giving us food for thought. PETER PRITCHARD It’s very compact, it’s a real clean piece of kit and so it’s ready out of the box, but because it looks so beautiful you want to look for a nice area where we might use it as a fitting of choice.

FLOS What Flos products have you favoured using the most in residential projects? PETER PRITCHARD We were working with one particular client, who had a very respectable art collection and the brief was to create a gallery quality light installation to celebrate the art, while not looking like a gallery. With the Light Cut and the Light Cut Mini we were able to provide a level of illumination that would be commensurate with any high gallery space but in a way that felt comfortable and sat with the more domestic aesthetic of the setting. And he was thrilled that he had that best of both worlds, he had his artwork lit beautifully and he had flexibility that that solution provided. The light solution provided that wonderful bridge between the high-gallery aspect and the more domestic environment. FLOS Now Flos is launching a new shape and finishes for Light Shadow. So how would you use this kind of light source and what would be the perfect project for you in which to use it? PETER PRITCHARD I like the Light Shadow in its new, square form: I like its compactness and materiality. I find it very beautifully finished and thought through. ALEXIS THEMIS Light Shadow ticks all the boxes: it looks great, and performs as we as lighting designers want it to perform. It has a presence but it doesn’t drive the eye. It occupies the best of both worlds, which is something we know Flos does: there is a certain aesthetic, but this is not compromised by the performance of the fitting. FLOS What kind of habitat do you imagine for this kind of fixture? Which kind of mood would you use it for? PETER PRITCHARD We have thought about it for bar areas in some commercial projects because it does have a luxury feel, it has that element of bringing something sacred as you first come in, it kind of catches the eye. We will probably use it in more dramatic environments.

Oblique
Designed by Vincent Van Duysen
Designed by Vincent Van Duysen Oblique is a revolutionary table lamp, the natural evolution of the classic office swing arm model. It produces a controlled asymmetric light beam, perfect for professional lighting of the work area. Its UGR is lower than 10, to guarantee an exceptional anti-glare protection. Similarly, Oblique Floor fulfills its function in task lighting applications for reading chairs, lounge chairs and other spaces, both domestic and professional.
Among the portable table lamps, Gustave stands out for its distinctive design, enhanced by an awesome lighting performance over the table. Once placed on a surface, the lamp spreads the light with an evenly distribution, excellent uniformity and surprisingly extensive reach. Gustave is the portable table lamp that perfectly combines the seductive attractiveness of a decorative design icon and the supreme lighting technology of a patented 360º asymmetrical lens. Almendra
Wireline
Designed by Patricia Urquiola
Designed by Formafantasma Almendra is a suspended luminaire that combines modularity and organic minimalism. Inspired by the almond tree -from which it takes its name in Spanish-, Almendra is composed by a ‘branch’ acting as central spine, and a set of ‘petals’ performing as light sources. The central spine is presented in three layouts that define lamp’s shapes and models. Each ‘branch’ can accommodate between 2 to 6 ‘petals’ -depending on the model-. These can be oriented in 6 positions (Up, Down, +60º, +120º, -60º and -120º). This modularity enables Almendra to illuminate in any desired direction. As long as Almendra keeps its balance, and suspension steady, it allows all aiming possibilities (360º from the central spine nerve). This freedom to compose the product goes hand in hand with the sophisticated beauty of this design. Almendra is defined by a colour palette that evokes nature, a silky and comfy light emission, and a materials palette, manufacture process and product design intended to be sustainable and strictly respectful with the environment.

Formafantasma’s Wireline sits somewhere between artistic expression and industrial design. Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin’s latest creation for Flos represents their design ethos and aesthetic values, where functionality meets the unexpected. It’s a piece that neatly fits within the studio’s universe, where design, social responsibility and ecology collide. Discover Wireline

Oplight
Super Line & Pro
Designed by Jasper Morrison
Designed by Flos Architectural Jasper Morrison’s latest lamp for Flos is an exercise in simplicity; a wall lamp at the service of architecture and space. The embodiment of Super Normal (a recurring theme in Morrison’s work since early on in his career), Oplight looks like a musical note on a pentagram, or, as the designer describes it, ‘the most obvious, definitive shape a wall light could be.’ Materials: aluminium, polycarbonate Power: from 16W up to 25W Light Source: Led Module from 1325lm up to 2065lm - 2700K - CRI90 Finishes: Textured Anthracite, Satin Black, Textured Metallic Grey, Textured White

Superline & Superline Pro compose a family of stand-alone linear profiles for office applications with a technical approach to visual comfort. From a user point of view, glare at 65º is under 30.000 candles and UGR is under <14 and <18 (according to the strictest industry standards). Additionally, a perfect distribution over the desktop surface is achieved by its batwing shaped light spread. Altogether, this results in state-of-the-art visual comfort and the best of the best in office lighting (oriented to people well-being).

Pointbreak is a family composed of bollards, beacons, and both ceiling and wall-mounted luminaires. Its range of models comprises a wide panoply of solutions for all outdoor lighting schemes (form floor surface or semi-recessed applications, to wall sconces with simple or double emittance). Its elegant forms, designed by Piero Lissoni, conceal a 360º emission light source, whose positioning gives Pointbreak absolute visual comfort. Due to its full visual cut-off, the origin of light is completely hidden from view. The subtle lighting solution of Pointbreak highlights materials and surfaces, with an exclusive grazing effect, and guides users through the space with a minimal impact on the landscape.

Discover Spine
Spine is the answer to outdoor light projection. Designed by Vincent Van Duysen, the Spine family is composed of 3 models (Absolute, Pro and Ultra) to respond to any external spotlight needs. Robust yet elegant, its shape is intended to fulfil absolute orientability and versatility, while offering light curators and landscape designers an overwhelming assortment of tools to perform any mind-imaginable light scene. Embodied in a lighting fixture, Spine achieves paramount avantgarde lighting technology, the gathering of the most complete optical possibilities, and the perfect concordance between minimalistic beauty and outdoor endurance.
Mile Designed by Antonio Citterio Mile personifies in its family range all the asymmetrical applications for outdoor lighting projects. Starting from its mounting possibilities (wall, path, ceiling and bollard), following by its light functionality (wall washer and side shifted emission), and ending by its customization options (from its standard colours, to models ready to match the coating of surfaces where installed). In the words of its creator, designer Antonio Citterio, ‘The aim of Mile is to reduce the size of the object while obtaining the best possible optical performance. This work comprised multiple aspects: minimization, high performance, and the perceptual quality of a perfect object.’

Captain Flint
In Vitro
Designed by Michael Anastassiades
Designed by Philippe Starck This iconic design steps out from its interior homeland to become an archetype of outdoor beauty. This outdoor version (IP65) is born after technological waterproof engineering achievements that meet the requirements for outdoor lighting fixtures. From the aesthetic perspective, Captain Flint ventures into its new outdoor milieu with some traits to integrate itself into the open environments. The unique base for the Captain Flint embodies an elegant natural design, in harmony with the colours and textures of outdoor spaces. The body and head of the lamp are available in five finishes, combined with just as many refined materials for the base.
Discover Captain Flint
An elegant outdoor lighting collection designed by Philippe Starck, In Vitro presents a series of glowing glass lanterns that magically appear to illuminate on their own, like pure architectural volumes of light. Available in portable, bollard, ceiling, wall and suspended mountings; the light emitted from the lamp is soft, diffused, and free of strong contrasts thanks to the ‘edge lighting’ technology, in which the point-like LEDs are hidden by an opalescent diffuser that evens out the light. Starck himself defines this effect: ‘Since forever, the lightbulb is protected by a glass globe. Today, this disappears in favour of the light. It is both poetic and surrealist idea of dematerialized architectural lighting and the memory of the space occupied by the light.’
