Message from the
General Manager FALL/WINTER 2016 Wow, what a summer this has been! Great weather translated into full use of our swimming pools, camps, community center, ballfields and parks for another memorable summer for your family. An easing of drought conditions partially lifted stringent water restrictions, allowing the District to water parks more fully, thus improving the green appearance of many of our parks. This fall we are highlighting the numerous opportunities you have through LARPD to work on and improve your fitness for a busy lifestyle. Leaf through this guide and select something for you and your family to make your fall a healthy and fun one! As school is starting, we have many activities after school for your children to improve their skills in sports and other activities, improve their own fitness and meet new friends in the process! Since fitness is a great idea for all ages, don’t forget our senior citizen fitness classes that are gaining in popularity. Aging more healthfully and gracefully is a great goal for all of us! This summer we continued the planning process to replace the aging playgrounds at May Nissen, Big Trees and Pleasure Island Parks as well as the play area at Jane Addams Preschool on Murdell Lane. The bidding process for those projects should commence this fall for spring/summer construction. We held our annual “Board Meetings in the Parks” and our Board and staff listened to your hopes and concerns about your local parks and recreation programs and facilities. Our Coastal Conservancy grant-funded improvements to Sycamore Grove Park continued to move forward with the completion of the native plant garden and interpretive displays near the Wetmore Road entrance and work on the outdoor platform nearby for outdoor classes and interpretive presentations. Construction work to replace sections of the asphalt trail in the park is being planned in a funding partnership with East Bay Regional Park District. This fall, your positive health and fitness is our goal. As the famous “Jerry McGuire” movie line goes: “Help me help you!” Help us improve your health and fitness by signing up for any of the fun, active programs we offer through this guide, and be sure members of your family partake as well. You’ll be glad you did!

If things remain as they are today, one third of all children born in the year 2000 or later may suffer from diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. Overweight youth may never achieve a healthy weight; 70% of obese teens may become obese adults. The cumulative effect could be that children born in the year 2000 or later may not outlive their parents.

You can look and feel great at any age! “Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter.” ~ Satchel Paige In this Activity Guide, LARPD is highlighting fitness at any age. An article that appeared in Legion Athletics said it so well, we’re reprinting portions here. So, regardless of your age, get fit, get fabulous, get going!
Fitness at Any Age: Training in Your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and Beyond... You don’t have to be in your 20s to be muscular, lean, and strong. In fact, play your cards right and you can show the “kids” how the fitness game really works.
• Your muscle doesn’t have to wither away as you age. • You don’t have to remove “six-pack” from your bucket list • Your metabolism doesn’t have to implode • Your hormones don’t have to slump If you’re willing to put in the work, you can become a shining paragon of health and vitality that time just can’t extinguish. It’s not hard or complicated either. One part know-how, one part persistence, and one part patience, and voila, you’re there. You see, less changes with age than you probably think. The fundamentals of good dieting and effective training remain. Your body’s machinery still operates on the same instructions and still responds to the same stimuli. Take good care of it and it’ll serve you faithfully until your wheels finally stand still.
So, let’s get started.
Training in Your 20s and 30s These are the years where you can push your body the hardest and demand the most of it. There’s no doubt about it. But don’t mistake youth for invulnerability. The last thing you want to do is leave your younger years hampered by injuries, overtraining, and metabolic slowdown. The older you get, the harder it is to come back from such setbacks. Your goals during this period should be simple: Learn how to train properly, build the muscle you need to look the way you want, and learn how to get and stay lean.
Training in Your 40s and 50s Many people think reaching their middle years is like face planting into a pool of quicksand. Nonsense!
Your hormones are probably fine too. Lifestyle factors are equally, if not more, causative as aging itself. The natural variance in people’s anabolic hormone levels just doesn’t influence muscle building and fat loss nearly as much as media hype suggests. If you’re willing to work hard, you can have a below-average hormone profile and farabove-average physique.
Training in Your 60s and Beyond What changes as you move into your “golden years”? Not much.
If you’re middle-aged, you can still build plenty of muscle strength. That said, there are two key differences between college-aged and middle-aged bodies: 1) as you get older, your muscles become more susceptible to traininginduced damage; and 2) repairing this damage takes longer than it did when you were younger.
The major difference between your younger and older years isn’t what you can do but how much. Older bodies love use but struggle with abuse. You can still be strong and work out hard. You can still rock a lean physique. Your metabolism can still burn hot and your hormones can still keep you feeling young. The only decline you may notice compared to your 40s is in your body’s ability to recovery from workouts.
Don’t worry–your metabolism is fine.
Get Out and Play!
The average adult’s metabolism slows by about 1 to 3% per decade. The primary reason for this is muscle loss so if you maintain your muscle, you maintain your metabolism. If you add muscle, you increase it.
As you flip through this Fall/Winter 2016 guide, check out our diverse fitness classes designed for any fitness level. Take our fitness assessment and we’ll pair you with a program that works for you. What are you waiting for? Get out there and continue to play!
Why, then, do so many people gain weight as they age, if not physiological decline? For most people, the answer is very simple: lifestyle changes. They were active in college and ate accordingly and now have reduced activity levels but not food intake. The result, of course, is weight gain.
The Bottom Line Fitness truly is a lifelong journey that doesn’t end until you breathe your last breath. In an ideal world, you’d use your 20s and 30s to build your ideal physique and then enjoy maintaining it for the rest of your life.
