Message from the
General Manager SUMMER 2017 Did we get enough rain this winter? Only time will tell if it’s “enough” because long droughts in the past have had longterm repercussions for our trees and landscape. We’ve done our best to protect our public green spaces of the Livermore Area, and the District will continue to manage water wisely and design landscapes for lower water use so we are using this precious resource in prudent fashion. This includes removal of dead trees and strategic planting of replacement trees over time that stand a better chance of survival in such drought conditions. This year, please help us celebrate LARPD’s 70th Anniversary! On June 13, 1947, voters approved the creation of the Livermore Area Park, Recreation and Parkway District, and staff and volunteers have faithfully served the community’s parks and recreation needs ever since. Do you remember your first experience in a local park, community center, sports field or swimming pool? We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for positive life experiences and personal growth that play a meaningful role in people’s lives. For me, I proposed marriage to my wife in a park. Yes, my knee got a little grimy in the grass and mud, but I was happy for the chance to pop the question at the right place and at the right time, in a beautiful spot with the stars shining down on us. And 40 years later, she still says “yes.” Whew! LARPD has great new programs and improved facilities planned for your summer enjoyment, and we encourage you to partake in your recreation and park district services. Plans are in progress to go out to bid to replace the playgrounds at Big Trees Park, Pleasure Island Park, May Nissen Park and the Jane Addams Preschool at Max Baer Park. Improvements to Sycamore Grove Park through a Coastal Conservancy Grant should be nearing completion, making the park more user-friendly and interpreting its incredible flora and fauna to park visitors. The process to complete the Springtown Open Space Master Plan continues, with the District receiving public input on design concepts and uses, developing alternatives, getting public feedback on alternatives and presenting options to the LARPD Board and Livermore City Council. We anticipate the process to be complete by the end of summer. Thank you for your continued participation in LARPD activities and places, and thanks for being a part of this 70year legacy of service to our community. We’re looking forward to 70 more! Have a great summer!
Happy Holidays!
Tim Barry General Manager

PARKS &FACILITIES
Livermore Area Recreation & Park District
SUMMER 2017
Important Resources
Parks
After several years of drought, LARPD is thankful California is experiencing above-average rainfall this year. There were about 250 trees throughout the District that did not survive the drought, and they have been removed. Many others were stressed by the lack of water, and it is expected that some may still be lost over the next several years due to the length of the drought. District staff members were able to save many of the stressed trees, using reclaimed water whenever possible. Most of the trees that died or experienced severe stress are not considered to be native or drought-tolerant – pines, alders, birches and redwoods. The District has adopted a strategic and customized approach to replanting trees by evaluating the needs and desired appearance for each park on an individual basis. Most tree and shrubbery replacements will begin in the fall, as that is the best time of year to achieve the highest survival rates. As part of the strategic approach, the District will prioritize parks based on the level of positive impact a replanting effort will have on the individual parks. Each park will differ as far as the amount of plant material to be replaced, if there is a need to upgrade the existing irrigation system and what opportunities there are to reduce the amount of turf. In each case, the goal is to increase water conservation and sustainability at each park. Should you have questions, please contact the LARPD Parks Division at parks@larpd.org.
Picnic Rentals
All LARPD parks are open from sunrise to sunset. Alcohol and bounce house permits are available for additional charge to the applicant at specific picnic rental locations. Liability Insurance will be required for events exceeding 80 or more people or for when a party is serving alcohol during the park rental.
