Message from the General Manager Winter/Spring 2014 The upcoming winter season gives us a chance to look back upon the past year, our adventures, our challenges, and our blessings. We want to be sure you know how grateful we are that you and your family have taken advantage of the many recreation activities, and parks and recreation facilities we work so hard each day to provide to you. We, again, are presenting this catalogue full of opportunities for your family to exercise, learn something new, meet a new friend, volunteer, and find new ways to enjoy life. Set out to try one new thing this season out of this booklet. You’ll be glad you did! In this issue, we salute our many senior citizen programs and the talented staff and volunteers who make it happen every day at the senior services area of the Robert Livermore Community Center. And we couldn’t make it all happen without the excellent partners we have in the community who provide classes, services, lunches and events for our seniors. I want to particularly recognize our Recreation Supervisor for Senior Citizen and Volunteer Services, Maureen Gandara Swinbank, who has served this community at LARPD for the past 26 years. Her hard work, expertise, enthusiasm, dedication and ability to bring resources and people together to benefit our seniors have been at the core of our success! If you’ve been counting your blessings at this time of year, as we have, perhaps you’d consider making a contribution of your hardearned dollars or volunteer time to benefit the many LARPD programs or parks that could use your assistance. The LARPD Foundation has published the LARPD Parks and Play Donation Catalogue with gift ideas, and you can find it on our website. I encourage you to make a tax-deductible contribution that truly improves your community and gives you the ability to “give back” to a community that offers so much to you and your family. Happy Holidays!
Tim Barry General Manager

“There's increasing evidence that children gain a lot from going to preschool, says Parents advisor Kathleen McCartney, PhD, dean of Harvard Graduate School of Education, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At preschool, they become exposed to numbers, letters, and shapes. And, more important, they learn how to socialize – get along with other children, share, contribute to circle time." - excerpt from www.parents.com/toddlers-preschoolers/starting-preschool/curriculum/why-preschool-matters/

SENIOR SERVICES “Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.” ~Leroy "Satchel" Paige Oldest MLB Rookie Player
Satchel Paige, who played his last Major League Baseball game at age 59, summed it up like this "how old would you be if you didn't know how old you was?" Here’s where LARPD Senior Services invites you to get out and play no matter what your age or abilities. The Senior Services Center at the Robert Livermore Community Center is here to assist those 50+ with a wide variety of life enrichment services, classes and programs, special events, trips, and, of course, play.
Social Services The Senior Center offers one-stop shopping to help seniors and their families navigate through the continuum of services available through both LARPD and other agencies. Staff members are available for private consultations on age-related issues such as caregiving, housing and more. Both Health Insurance Counseling and Legal Assistance are offered to seniors.
Various health checks including foot care, blood pressure, diabetes screenings, hearing tests and nutrition are available as well. BART tickets and Dial-A-Ride vouchers are also available. A fund also can assist seniors who need financial assistance in the event of an emergency. Weekday lunch is available through Spectrum Community Services Inc., for a suggested donation. No senior 60 or above will be refused a meal due to lack of funds. Maureen Gandara Swinbank, Senior Services Supervisor, is still swinging after 26 years at LARPD.
Recreation Programs
Venture Trips
Special Events
There’s no time like the present to get out and enjoy all that life has to offer. Seniors can partake in cooking programs and other nutrition and wellness seminars; refresh their driving safety skills; and get creative in art and writing workshops.
Explore the Bay Area and far beyond with day, overnight and extended trips with LARPD staff. Spend a day exploring San Francisco, taking in some theater or tasting culinary delights. Join extended adventures to places all over the United States as well as overseas. Presentations are available to learn about extended trips.
Monthly luncheons (or brunches!) feature seasonally themed meals and entertainment. Unique events such as Halloween costume parties and holiday teas provide celebratory times for all. Special performances from local groups and various social events offer fun times throughout the year.
A wide selection of fitness classes are available year-round, from yoga and tai chi to light aerobics and Zumba Gold. Walking groups are offered as well. Seniors can play billiards, cards, bingo and more, or join a craft group.
Free Programs Fun, free programs and no-cost services are often available at the Senior Center. The first and third Thursday of each month offers a free Movie Madness afternoon with popcorn and movies in the Vintage Lounge. Other fun and free offerings include special events such as ice cream socials. Enjoy the Vintage Lounge lending library, which is maintained by volunteers. Free services are available as well, such as eyeglass cleaning and adjustment.
Get Out and Play! Play is not just for children. We know play keeps us young at heart and in mind regardless of our age. By fostering play in a variety of ways, Senior Services provides those programs that continue to educate, stimulate and enrich the lives of those 50 and up. So stop by today, come meet the staff. And then get out and play!

“Hey-Buddy A Dog & His Favorite Dog Park
Hey-Buddy
We moved to Livermore in 1987 from the Hayward area. We raised our two children there and they will probably raise their kids there too as Livermore is their home. My wife and I moved to Grass Valley in 2011 after I had retired, but before we left, you trail'd the dog park at the rodeo grounds. We had a young dog, Hey-Buddy, that we took to the new park because we couldn't throw the ball to him at any other park. He LOVED IT. We could use the flinger and he could run like the wind. His favorite thing to do was to chase after the first throw and on his return he would drop the first ball at full speed while I flung the next ball the opposite direction so that he could just keep running. After a few times at the park he would know when we were heading to the park and he would start crying and crying with excitement, it was really quite embarrassing. After we moved I got the feeling that every time he jumped in the car he thought we might end up at his dog park but we never did. Recently he was diagnosed with Lymphoma and was given two days to three months to live. After we got over the shock of the diagnosis, mostly because he's only six, we started a "bone list", (dog for bucket list). One of the things on the list was to go back to Livermore and visit his dog park. We did so a couple of weeks ago and we were so pleased to see the Meadow Park and how you have upgraded and maintained it and he ran hard that day. We lost him just recently, and when I think of him and what he most liked to do, I will always remember him running like the wind at the Meadow Dog Park. Thank you for making and most of all keeping the Robertson Meadow Park. John Boyle

Sponsored by Senior Support of the Tri-Valley through grants Sheri Berger, RD/Kristen Fitzpatrick, MS RLCC-Larkspur South Inside your body, inflammation can be a friend or wreak havoc with your health.
