WASHINGTON, DC – El Departamento de Justicia desafió en la corte federal la reciente ley de Arizona S.B. 1070, por contradecir a la ley federal. En un reporte enviado al distrito de Arizona, el Departamento alegaba que la S.B. interfería inconstitucionalmente con la autoridad del gobierno federal para pautar y ejecutar las políticas inmigratorias, explicando “que la Constitución y la ley federal no permiten el desarrollo de políticas inmigratorias de remiendo a nivel local y estatal en todo el país”. WASHINGTON, DC - The Department of Justice has challenged the state of Arizona’s recently passed immigration law, S.B. 1070, in federal court, citing conflict with federal law. In a brief filed in the District of Arizona, the Department said S.B. 1070 unconstitutionally interferes with the federal government’s authority to set and enforce immigration policy, explaining that “the Constitution and federal law do not permit the development of a patchwork of state and local immigration policies throughout the country.”

Although Arizona’s recent “show us your papers” law has highlighted the likelihood that racial profiling is an inevitable and unacceptable result of such legislation, most people in this country would probably be surprised to learn that at least as many legal U.S. citizens as undocumented immigrants would be unable to comply with laws such as SB 1070.
