The Revolution in Eyelash Extensions

Roberta Aršulienė is not only the master behind this issue's front cover, but she is also a professional Eyelash Extensions artist, with 11-years of international practice. Grožio Kultas is Roberta's training academy, where she has been a trainer in the Eyelash Industry for eight years. Creator and technician of the new patented technique named “Feather” has been taking the Eyelash industry by storm! While working with her clients, she has found out a way how to apply exclusive eyelash extensions uniquely for each client and make them feel and look as special as they deserve.

Mastering the Feather Technique The “Feather” technique was represented and launched for the first time in the biggest Baltic States beauty exhibition “Cinderella 2016” which took place in Lithuania 2 years ago and it was improved and patented until November 2017. The “Feather” technique had also been introduced in “Les Nouvelles Esthetiques” magazine and at the Professional Beauty London Excel Exhibition 2018. It can be a sophisticated technique for an expert who has already mastered working with Classic, Volume and Capping techniques. However, the “Feather” technique is difficult, so Roberta has separated into 3 levels: Classic Feather, American Feather and Ombré Feather. The new technique allows to apply more than 60 exclusive eyelash extensions, which can be called a masterpiece! The most important aspect of the “Feather” technique is the being able to solve all the problems which occur during the treatment, such as weak eyelashes.

Masterclass for Professionals Grožio Kultas have a three day course for any lash artist interested in learning the Feather technique. The three days include; Classic, Volume Capping techniques for advanced masters. The Classic Feather technique and it's methodology, double volume fan technique, Feather Technique Formulas & Corrections and the famous American Feather/Ombré Feather techniques. During the course, you will have three models to practice on and will be awarded a Gold Professional Master Diploma. The course price starts from €1500 and will be based in the training academy located in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Training at Grožio Kultas Grožio Kultas is the biggest beauty education and training centre in the Baltic States, officially approved by Government institutions as education centre. They have accumulated considerable experience since 2010 when the academy was opened. The academy is often seen as one of the top experts in the eyelash extensions industry in Lithuania, with a strong team of experienced and highly qualified masters and trainers.

Perfect Hygiene

Four Steps to

by Angelina Salacinski http://www.lashfactor.co.uk

Looking after our client’s eyes and lashes is a priority. We see so much misinformation out there that I think it’s important to teach students the correct way to clean lashes, protect the eyes and use the correct products.

Step 1: Prepping the Lashes For lash clients we should be cleaning their lashes before every full set and infill. It’s important to use a cleanser that has been especially designed for lashes. I personally have sensitive skin so I always use LC Lash and Brow Cleanser which leaves my lashes clean without skin irritation, thanks to its SLS free formula. This ingredient, often listed as sodium lauryl sulphate, can be quite drying on the skin – something I have experienced with other lash cleansers. Lashologist Choice Barrier Cream should be applied before every single eye treatment to protect the area from irritating vapour molecules and inflammation. Apply the cream on the lids from the brows to the lash line and this will protect that delicate eye area.

further reduce the risk of a possible reaction. You need to educate your clients on the importance of cleaning their lashes every day at home. Lashes can get a build up of make-up, oils, sweat and dead skin cells and these can sit between your lash extensions. This is why it’s so important that your clients clean their lashes every day. It will help prevent any infections and inflammations such as blepharitis. It will actually improve the retention of your lashes so this is always a good bit of information to give to your clients! You can include an aftercare kit in with your full sets and that way it will get your clients into the habit of cleaning their lashes from the beginning.

Step 4 : Sourcing Products Always have retail products available for your clients to buy, encouraging them to look after their lashes at home and keep them in good condition. You can retail lash cleansers, cleaning brushes, foaming bottles, mascara brushes etc. It’s important to stay professional and only sell products that have been especially designed for the job. I see a few techs that use baby shampoo or are advising their clients to use it.

Now you are ready to start lashing!

Step 2: Sanitising Your Tools One thing I always do is sanitise the lash extensions. We open our tray of lashes and we don’t really know where they have been or if they have been handled with gloved hands or not whilst they were being manufactured. There are 2 products you can use to sanitise the lashes - Saloncide or a sanitising wand. Saloncide is a liquid sanitiser that can be sprayed directly on the lashes and left to dry. It can also be sprayed directly on to the hands and used as a hand sanitiser. It has the same hazard rating as water so is perfectly safe. I personally prefer to use my sanitising wand to sanitise the lashes which uses UV light to kill up to 99.99% of germs. You just turn the wand on and move it up and down the lashes a few times and then they are ready to use.

Step 3 : Post Treatment Hygiene Once you have finished doing your clients lashes, pat the area where you applied the barrier cream and do a post wash. Wait 5 minutes after applying the last lash and then clean the lashes again with cleanser. This will remove any vapour molecules that have gotten on the lashes and

Baby shampoo is not suited for safe use on the eye area. It is not designed for the lash cleaning process and can contain fragrances and other ingredients that can actually promote skin irritation. You have a duty of care to your clients and should anything happen to your client’s eyes then your insurance may very well not cover you because you are not using the correct products. Buying products designed specifically for the lash and eye area is the best way to ensure safety and results. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions of usage. People in our industry have spent years researching, developing and testing so that we have the best products available. By purchasing products that have the lash industry in mind, you are helping to support the brands who manufacture the products and the companies who sell them. Our industry thrives when we all support each other! Educate your clients, support our industry and stay professional. Happy lashing!

Tackling

Mental Health

Through Lash Art by Claudia King

Mental health awareness is so important, whether you are a parent, partner, friend, neighbour… With today’s environment being so stressful and mental health being a hot topic it’s interesting that it is still so taboo.

Anxiety is worrying about the future, but depression is worrying about the past. It means that you can be oh so tired but yet still unable to sleep.

Dealing with severe anxiety myself for in excess of 25 years, where I am unable to travel further than 20 minutes from my home, having family with anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and depression I wanted to do something, anything to help raise awareness. Lashing is my “mindfulness” so it made sense to use this skill. I gave myself what I thought was more than enough time, 6 months, to do a series of lash art pictures depicting emotions of mental health, I only just made the deadline. As far as I am aware, no one has done a series of lash art before and certainly not on the subject of mental health. There were many challenging aspects to this project. Not being an experienced photographer myself was difficult and the biggest concern I had was to accurately portray such a sensitive subject, that I made sure each picture was worthy of the title of the series. Did I really think I could pull this off.

The struggle of not being able to speak about how you feel, knowing that the YOU have the key to unlock the words but just not being able to.

What the world sees, the happy smiling face BUT when that same person looks at themselves in the mirror, the broken mirror, there is sadness, tears, troubled thoughts.

Awareness is key in our society, where over working is normal, skipping lunches and breaks are every day occurrences and booking just one more client. How can we step out of this trap and ensure we don’t drown? We can certainly help ourselves to ensure we minimise the stress we have in our working life. We can take responsibility for our health with a few simple things that we cannot underestimate. The power of exercise, drinking water, regular healthy snacks, ensuring you have lunch breaks and remembering to say NO to that extra client, it may mean more money, but The words that often go around one’s head that you can only see if you if you burn out you won’t be earning anything. The Difference Between

Allergic Reactions

and Irritations by Miranda Tarpey UK Lash Institute

It can sometimes be confusing to some lash stylist and clients alike to differentiate between the two, as some symptoms can look similar.

What is an Allergic Reaction? It’s all about our immune system, if our body does not recognise something as safe or something that our body thinks will pose a threat, our immune system will defend this substance and create antibodies to fight what you are allergic to, and this will react causing an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction can come from inhalation, digestion or by touching. The threat of an allergic reaction with lash extensions is usually the inhalation from the adhesive into the cornea, nose, mouth and ears. Clients most at risk of a true allergic reaction will also have other types of allergies, such as: pollen, pets, foods like nuts and shellfish, and perhaps certain plants. When your completing your client consultations take note of any other known allergies they may have, including any auto immune disease.

Allergic Reaction with Lash Extensions The most obvious signs of allergic reaction with having lash extensions will be both of the client’s eyelids will start to swell and in severe cases will swell up so much that their eyes will look swollen shut, her eyes may also be bloodshot, watery, and itchy. She may feel nauseated and may have a pounding headache. If these symptoms happen to your client, do not remove the lashes as you do not want to further irritate the eye, send her for medical assistance immediately.

What is an Irritant? An eye irritation is a reaction to something that the eyes are sensitive to. It could be due to vapour from a chemical product reaching the cornea, or something touching the eye like a gel patch or tape. The eye will look red and sore due to dilated blood vessels on the sclera, the white outer surface of the eye.

How to avoid eye irritation with lashes ĵĵ

Ensure the under-eye pads are about 2mm away from the lower lid, so that they do not touch or scratch the eye to cause irritation.

ĵĵ

Ensure the eye is totally shut when lashing, keep checking especially if you are taping up top lid. It’s great to have a lash mirror handy to keep checking.

ĵĵ

Ensure your adhesive is not close to her sinuses, keep away from the ears and mouth.

ĵĵ

Avoid any products going into the eyes, such as shampoo, primer etc.

ĵĵ

Ensure client does not touch or scratch their eyes.

A client can be more sensitive due to cold or flu-like symptoms, certain medications, and any changes to their health. If a client has a cold or is feeling under the weather she will be more susceptible to irritants, a great tip is to give her a disposable mask to wear, place your adhesive container far away from her sinuses, keep your room well ventilated, ask her to avoid chewing gum or mints, use an extractor fan to draw chemicals away from her and wash her eye area and lashes after treatment. This will help alleviate any added irritation.

What is Contact Dermatitis?

Contact/irritant dermatitis is a point of skin contact irritation, this typically happens if the client has a product applied directly to their skin Recognising an allergic reaction – both eyelids will start to swell. If it that the body does not like, such as under-eye pads, or micropore tape, any is only the top lid and the lower lid is not swollen, this is not an allergic foreign object that comes into contact with skin that the body does not like, reaction, this is an inflamed top lid which could be an infection or irritation. it may show up as a rash in that exact area Patch testing is essential to avoid any serious allergic reactions. If you place around five lashes on each eye, you will be minimising the risk of a severe allergic reaction, these type of reactions are rare but you don’t want to be responsible for such events as a professional.

If you see a raised red, rash area where you used tape or where the gel pads were sitting, this would be contact dermatitis, again a way to avoid this would be to patch test any products that will come into direct contact with the skin.

Can you experience a reaction even after having lash extensions on for years?

We all aim for the same result, to give clients great lashes with no discomfort, learning to avoid any symptoms or recognise any signs will help minimise an unwelcome result.

Yes, you can. At first this may show up very mildly, but repeated exposure to the lash adhesive (or any other product) can develop until it becomes a full blown allergic reaction.

The Importance of Education in the

Eyelash Industry

by Carla Giannotti, Donna May, India Lomax, Kerry Kehoe & Vicky Bridger UK Lash Institute Trainers - http//uklashinstitute.com/trainers The lash industry is a forever growing industry, with knowledge being at the forefront. Education is key, it is important to gain continued knowledge as well as experience through courses, workshops and conferences. Here are a few of the UK Lash Institute Trainers helping to explain why below.

Carla:

India:

Base training is of utmost importance, it is the foundation of a good lash artist as it would be in any other beauty treatment. However, there are many training courses that could cause potential confusion for anyone wanting to start their lash career. I recommend everyone research the training courses, and to ensure they cover theory, demonstration and practical, all in a detailed manner. Try to opt for a course that includes ongoing support, so you can always have somewhere to fall back on if you stumble on any difficulties. Luckily, today quality training is easily available, unlike many years ago where it was hard to find.

When looking into training courses and what to choose, you need to figure out how you learn. I myself learn through visual and physical learning, watching videos, looking at photographs and being hands on. Looking at just a book, I don’t absorb the information being delivered to me. As a trainer, I always address this to my students and assess the best way they are learning. I want to know how they absorb the information as our training courses are incredibly in-depth theory, it is important for me that everyone walks out my class feeling confident and more knowledgeable. I love to learn myself, it keeps me excited and encourages me to succeed. I always invest in a training course once a year, and getting together will all like-minded people is a bonus.

Vicky:

Kerry:

The development of products, the scientific research into our glues as well as the understanding of continued wear of lash extensions on our natural lashes are a few good reasons why it is important to invest in further education. Those lash techs who invest will stand out from the crowd. With the competition growing, you want to be noticed and gain a good reputation within the industry your work needs to reflect this. By learning how to achieve good uniformity, understanding styling, learning new techniques and overcoming obstacles, you can really start to demonstrate your skill and flare for lashes! The treatment and the lash industry itself are continuously evolving so do training and get involved in your career as much as you can…. Don’t get left behind!

Being in the beauty industry myself for 22 years, I know how rapidly things can change and evolve over time. We have had better products and more importantly, better education. Without educating yourself you don’t learn about the further developments of lashing, using correct weights and lengths. Over the years, we learnt about lash diameters and the damage it can cause if used incorrectly. The difference in adhesives and how humidity plays a huge factor affecting retention. Now we even have an app! The Volumetric Calculator that helps us choose the correct lashes for our client based on their natural lashes. Without training, we would be in the unknown. I am so passionate about education, and passing this knowledge onto my students is

Donna: When I first trained in 2013, I only paid £149 for a day course that was only six hours long. It did go into a little in-depth of theory, but for practical I only had to place 20 lashes on someone and I was a fully qualified Lash technician! I didn’t have to do any case studies, I was able to go out into the world and lash people. When looking at other lash artists, I couldn’t understand why my work wasn’t as good as theirs. I decided to brave a Russian Volume training course. I had a company in mind from research, and thankfully I learnt so much! Since then, I have done 10 training courses and workshops. I am now an award winner and trainer myself, and if I didn’t invest in my career and decided to re-educate and grow, I wouldn’t be where I am now.

Best Retention

Getting the

from your Classic Lash Sets

by Darja Striletskaja & Veronica Rich http://www.londonlashpro.com/ A lot of technicians claim that single lash extensions don’t last as well as volume lashes. In many ways it’s true - in our experience, we have seen that classic lashes don’t last as long as volume, but there are two very good reasons for this. The difference in retention between classic and volume isn’t just because of the greater attachment area when it comes to volume, it can also be due to incorrect application.

Proper attachment will guarantee good retention - the base of the extension should always be nicely attached to the natural lash with around 2-4 mm (depending on the length of the extension) making contact with the natural lash. Remember - extensions can be applied either from the top, bottom or side of the natural lash.

The Amount of Adhesive We all got used to grabbing a decent amount of adhesive when working with volume – it just happens naturally and effortlessly due to the space in between volume lashes. When it comes to classic lashes, we need to pay attention to the amount of adhesive picked up, especially if you work with thinner single lashes such as 0.12 or 0.10. It’s not easy to pull the lashes out of the glue making sure you take the correct amount of adhesive that will guarantee you get a good bond and long retention - if there is not enough adhesive on the extension, the lashes will not last, if there is too much adhesive then you may cause damage to the natural lashes. The amount of adhesive should be just right - to achieve this you need only control the speed and angle of your dip.

Not Enough Adhesive

Too Much Adhesive

Correct Amount of Adhesive

Attachment area

Good retention for a set of classic lashes is not only about amount of adhesive used, but also the correct attachment between the extension and the natural lash. Get this right and your client’s lashes will have great retention!

The most common mistake is when the base of the extension it is not attached to the natural lash properly, so attachment is only in one small point of contact. Another type of attachment we see a lot with classic lashes is a cross-over with the natural lash where the lash hasn’t been properly applied. This will cause extensions to fall out more quickly - again due to that small point of contact, and may also cause damage to natural lashes by pulling them out when brushing.

15 - Lashes

Attaching to the top of the natural lash is the ‘classic’ way of lash application, and you feel very lucky if your client has beautiful and strong natural lashes! But what you are supposed do when your client’s natural lashes are all growing in different directions? We know when it comes to these kinds of clients all you want to do is to run :) Having years’ of experience now we know exactly how to correct the direction of extensions and ensure a good bond and retention even when it comes to difficult natural lashes! REMEMBER #1 - if the natural lash is growing crossed, you should always apply the extension perpendicular to the eyelid (90 degrees) ignoring the direction of natural lash and correcting it this way. This is when you would apply the extension to the side of the natural lash. This little trick will help you to achieve a neat classic look at all times (see picture below). REMEMBER #2 - in order to make those lashes last, you will need to “wrap” the extension around the natural lash. When we say “wrap”, we mean you really need to hug the natural lash from underneath and lock it in this position. This trick will give you fantastic retention for absolutely all clients with crazy crossed lashes (see picture below). We hope you will benefit from these little tips and tricks and will see a difference in the retention of your classic sets!

Learning to

Mix Curls

& Why It's So Important by Signe Langeberg http://www.goldenexperts.co.uk I’m sure you are aware of how many different curls there are out there. From really straight J curl to super curly U. How they are labelled is dependant on the manufacturer. You can have B curl from one supplier that looks like C curl and you can have C curl from other supplier that looks like B curl in the other shop. When you place them next to each other you can see the difference in length, even though they state the same size. That is why we support buying all your lash extensions from one supplier as this can look very different on a set of lashes.

Eyes'? This is where the outer corners naturally point more up than the inner corners of the eye? You still change the curl at the middle of the eye but instead of putting the curlier curl to the outer eye, you put it on the inside of the eye (from the inner corner D-C).

Enhancing your client's unique eye shape. Mixing curls is important because you want to enhance every clients eye shape, and you want to give them a unique set of lashes that will make them feel wonderful for the next 3 weeks. If you create this special experience for your client, they will value it, and you more. This means they will not leave you for your competitor and will be willing to pay extra money for the service. The whole purpose of having eyelash extensions is to hide certain facial flaws and put more emphasis on beautiful features. For example, elderly clients will appreciate looking younger and fresher which can be done with only mixing curls the right way.

If you are someone who loves to get creative and do special effects on each and every client, you will be in for a treat because you can change the curl wherever you want to open or close the eye more! What I mean by this is that if a client has hooded eyes only in the middle of the eye, place the stronger curl there to hide it. For example, if you decide to do the doll effect, the curl map is C-D-C. Inner and outer corners have C curl and in the middle of the eye you place D curl.

So how do you mix them? There are certain rules that you should follow: You should never put two curls which are 2 times less curly next to each other, such as a J curl next to a C curl or D curl next to a B curl. This is because there would be too much difference which is noticeable. All the curls should change gradually and seamlessly. However, you CAN put next to each other D curl and L+ or C curl and L+. Measuring lengths to mix your curls. When you are changing the curl on the map, you should measure their lengths against each other. This also comes down to the brand of lashes that you are using. Are the curls different? If so, a little or a lot? If they are only slightly different, you can change the length by choosing 1mm shorter or longer. If the curls are very different, you should change the lengths by 2mm shorter or longer than the next length. For example, if you have C curl 8mm and you are moving into D curl; before placing a D curl 9mm, compare it with the C curl, it might be that C curl 8mm looks like 10mm next to the D curl. If that is the case instead of using a 9mm, use a 10mm D curl. Now we get to the most important part which is - Where do you change the curl on the lash map? If you are a person who loves rules, then the general rule is to change from the middle of the eye. It creates a more open eye effect on the outside part of the eye. But what if you have someone who has what we call 'Happy

Always make notes of your clients. There are so many booking systems out there that let you do that. This way you can guarantee your consistency with each service. And consistency is something that every client wants. Also, make it easy for yourself and draw a lash map! Write all the lengths, shape and curl on it to create symmetry for both eyes.

The Real Truth of What Wants

Your Client

by Hanna Putjato and Karolina Swiderska http://www.londonlashpro.com/

When you start working in the lash industry, you’re very concerned about what your clients want - how to meet their expectations in the best possible way. With years, you not only gain experience but also start forgetting about clients’ needs as you already built your clientele and they come to you because they’ve been with you for years, and they simply trust you. Sound familiar? Over years of practice, you’ve probably spent lots of money on different trainings, trying to expand your knowledge in as many aspects as possible – even the top line of the extensions, perfect volume fans or super dramatic volume techniques, and then welcoming your clients with new, beautiful lash masterpieces.

Would you like perfect lashes? “No, thank you”

this “black line” will rarely be appreciated, no matter how beautiful we all find it!

Lash Goal Perfect fans and super flawless look. Hours and hours of practice to create these perfect fans, hundreds of tweezers tested to find the holy grail that will make a perfect fan in just a second and very careful application and removal of any fan which is not up to super standards! Sounds familiar, huh? Actual Result:

It all sounds great but after over 8 years of working with clients, we’ve noticed that what we are learning and trying to recreate on our clients’ eyes is not always what they want to have. We’re sure that your clients are happy with the final result as they get an amazing set of lashes every time, but have you ever stopped for a second and thought about what your client actually wants and expects from her treatment?

Super busy day, client after client, and you are running behind the schedule. Trying to provide a treatment in a rush you give your client ANY fans, feeling absolutely disappointed with yourself :( As a result - client looks in the mirror and says: “Thank you hun, they are as beautiful as always! You silently: ‘WHAAAT? Is she joking? Those fans are horrible!’

Lash Goal Perfect outer lash line for bold effect.

Well, the reality is that the client doesn’t care about how opened or how even your fans are, they just want to have some lashes on and look pretty. Look at the example on the left, do you really think that your client knows that her each fan looks so perfect?

We invest lots of money into advanced lash trainings, teaching us how to create this amazing and super full edge. We learn how to mix the curls and work with layers to achieve a perfect black line. We are those obsessed therapists who religiously mix curls and change lengths within the layers trying to achieve that extreme, super uniformed black edge.

Let’s be honest - she doesn’t pay much attention to it, for her the most important is the final effect. And whether you like it or not, lashes just have to be there and they have to last long. That’s it!

Actual Result:

Lash Goal Super full and sexy look.

Client: ‘Hun, they are “too perfect” and they look a bit too “fake”... Can you make them messier and more natural next time?”You silently: ‘NOOOOO... How many times did you keep your poor client for the extra half an hour, THEY LOOK SO PERFECT.........’ Reality is - lots of clients prefer slightly making the appointment 3 hours long (!!!) just because you wanted to messy look, they consider it more natural and sexy, so your efforts to create cover all her lashes?! We did it nearly every day! We were happy to give them our extra time to make their lashes look fuller and darker. Actual Result: Client: “Hun, they are beautiful, but it’s too much for me… they look like someone has attached pieces of fur to my eyes. My husband won’t like it can you please remove some?” You silently: ‘NOOOOO!! OMG She is evil! How can we remove some lashes? They are so full and gorgeous...’

27 - Lashes

Here we have a great example. These are Hanna’s lashes and the result she usually gets from the therapists: super full and perfect lashes. Do they look bad? Of course they look great, but is a result she is looking for?

Hanna’s opinion: “Nearly every time I get to have my lashes done – therapists are putting too dark and too thick lashes on me. Even if I ask for a quick treatment and natural effect. Probably they decide that “lash queen” should wear the best lashes ever :D Or they just want to give the best impression… So regardless my requests, I would often leave the salon with super dramatic volume set. Obviously I’m too polite to tell them that I don’t like this look, so I’m ending up with removal of a few lashes by someone else.. I really prefer my lashes to be light and natural. I think they look more classy and elegant than mega volume and suit my position and age better.”

Of course, we don’t claim that all of your clients are the same or that all of them won’t appreciate your efforts, but we can definitely claim that we often exaggerate the importance of little things such as the absolute perfection of each lash fan, or covering each single lash. At the same time, we underestimate really important things - correct styling, choice of density, the length of the treatment - and the main thing: we underestimate the importance of a good consultation! Instead of spending the extra half an hour on making all the fans perfect or striving for extreme coverage, let’s sit with our client and provide them with a proper and thorough consultation, making sure they leave our salon feeling both happy and beautiful. So let’s listen to our client’s needs and preferences. Let’s make them feel more beautiful, confident and attractive. Let’s provide better services rather than provide ‘perfect lashes’ and we’re sure your clients will be coming back to you for years and years to come!

Yes, not all the clients appreciate this super full look. Plus it’s super annoying and inconvenient to lay down on the bed for 3 hours without moving - we personally start to moan about it after 30 minutes of the treatment! As you can see, not always beautiful lashes are good lashes in client’s perspective.

Our Most

Embarrassing Moments by Vicky Bridger Lash Precision

A little light-hearted reading to put a smile on your face! Whether it’s something that’s happened to you, a colleague or a client this is the place where you can bring some humour to our lives. I’m starting this feature off with one of my own stories to get the ball rolling and I really look forward to reading more stories in the future. “As my little dog was approaching her later years I would allow her in my lash room to lay on her bed by my feet as she suffered with anxiety. On this occasion I had a client on my couch, we were 10 minutes into her treatment when my dog let off an almighty “love puff” which sounded like a whoopy cushion!! The smell hit me like a brick it was so potent it took my breath away and I rushed to open the windows. My poor client had no choice but to keep lying there and I’m sure she thought it was me and that I was blaming the dog!! RIP Megan x” — Vicky Bridger, Worthing

“That moment when you’ve spent 2.5 hours putting on eyelashes to find when your client opens their eyes it looks like you’ve invited them for an afternoon nap while you twiddled your thumbs! #trainingfails” — Haley Stokoe, Hexham “So… whilst lashing I had a day dream – I think it was almost a full on dream that my son was starting school, I leant forward and kissed my client on the forehead!! I actually could have died!!” — Amber Ward, Hullbridge “I was lashing a client quite happily in a world of my own. I ran out of 10’s so I turned to the side of me to my trolley and grabbed a new tray to add another strip. As I opened the tray my tweezers flicked out of hand and hit the floor. I got out of my chair to see where they landed and as I bent over to pick them up my trouser split right up the back seam!! My client laughed it was so embarrassing! At the salon I didn’t have a change of trousers so had to try and keep my back to the wall, I’m just glad my job involves sitting on my backside all day!” — Isabelle Davis, Southampton “I work from home and have a son with additional needs, a toddler and a puppy. I was doing a girl’s lashes one evening when my partner was poorly in bed. The toddler was watching Peppa Pig but my son was terrorising the puppy. Nothing I was saying would make him stop so I went to wheel across on my stool but I pushed off a little too firmly, I shot across the dining room and fell off my stool. I landed with such a crash on the floor tangled up in my stool with my legs up the wall! I was truly mortified. My client didn’t bat an eyelid. I can laugh about it now!!” — Vicki Jones, Ashford

Lash Artist Focus:

Emma Smith

How I started

I commenced my career in lashing in June 2014, and quickly realised that at last I had found something that I was extremely passionate about, and after years of searching had found a profession that I wanted to build a future around. I initially carried out my first course on Classic Lashes, and after learning the basics I completed my case studies within the two weeks. I couldn't believe how much I loved doing lashes, let alone becoming busy every day and having to turn people down!

Time to Update My Skills After 12 weeks of constantly working with my clients, I felt it was time to improve my skill set and decided to take my first course in Russian Volume lashes. Whilst at the time I was so proud when I passed this course, reflecting I probably should have taken more time in perfecting my skills on Classic Lashes prior to moving forward so quickly, and this is now something I advise my students in my training school. With the experience I had gained over the years and with my mentor’s assistance and guidance, I now run training courses; Classic beginner’s Since then I have carried out numerous advanced Russian Volume courses courses, Russian Volume courses; and mentoring sessions, from my Salon and 3 mentoring sessions with what I consider to be some of the most in Witham, Essex. talented and amazing Lash Artists in the industry today. In the future, I would love to expand my salon to a chain of salons, but Prior to these mentoring courses, I believed I was on target with where I more importantly would love to be able to continue to teach and educate wanted to be and that I knew what I needed to know, but my mentors made new people who want to enter our industry and train them up to become me realise that there was so much more to learn, and they helped me with the future. the education that I needed. My advice to anyone who would like to enter this industry is to work hard, concentrate on client satisfaction, never stop learning and improving your skill set, but most importantly is “Love what you do”.

How to Win Your First Competition

Lash Art

by Alena Skodic

Lash Art... Lashes, colour, fantasy and crazy ideas! It is all about the WOW-effect when you look at the picture! Some of our clients allow us to use some colour or ombrĂŠ lashes to give the lashes a light accent. But what should we do when we have so many ideas, we love colours and want to create something classy beautiful and show everyone? The answer is simple, Lash Art Competitions. There are so many Lash Art competitions at the moment where you can show your talent. What is very important you are not under stress as you have enough time to think your ideas over, to prepare all the accessories and a costume. And you have so much time for creating a look you need. Participating in such competitions raises your professional level. Each participation, even if you do not win, bring you experience and a step forward. As a judge of many competitions, I saw hundreds of different Lash Art works. And as I wish you all to win, I would like to share with you my experience and give you some tips. If it is allowed by organisers, have a professional team (make-up artist, hairdresser, photographer). So, you can concentrate on the lashes and accessories.

45 - Lashes

Photos - Tanja Nicklaus

If it is not allowed to have a team and you are planning to participate in many Lash Art competitions, I advise you to take some additional courses (make up, hairstyle, photography). You can be a perfect Lash Artist with great ideas, but if you cannot realize them, you will not win.

Read the criteria with care!

Make perfect photos!

ĵĵ

What brings more points: classic or volume lashes?

ĵĵ

Make such photos that can be judged according to the criteria

ĵĵ

Are strip lashes allowed?

ĵĵ

Light up the model and the lashes perfectly

ĵĵ

Will you get extra points for lower lashes?

ĵĵ

What is better to use one colour or more?

ĵĵ

Complexity of lash decoration

ĵĵ

Any extra points for hair, make-up, face or bodypainting and costume?

Let me give you some tips: ĵĵ

Use as many colours of lash extensions as possible according to your look. Combine different layering techniques and, of course, do not forget how the colours match each other

ĵĵ

The judges appreciate it more when all the accessories (lash/face/ hair decoration, costume, shoes and so on) are handmade. So, take time and do it yourself.

ĵĵ

Do not forget about nails. They can complete your look perfectly

ĵĵ

Before creating the look, think over the whole concept. Not just total look (lashes, hair, costume), but also the background for your photos. A white wall is boring. Think over what you would like to show the public, what is the idea of the whole concept?

If the judges do not see anything or not clearly enough, they cannot give you full points! If you work with a professional photographer, control their work and tell them what you are expecting and what you need. Since the pictures for lash competitions are something different from the pictures for beauty magazines. Usually the photographers do not have focus on lashes or see it differently from lash artists. So, control their work. I hope my tips will be helpful for you and will forward you to your victory. I wish you inspiration, amazing ideas, crazy Lash Art looks, satisfaction with your works and of course only top-places!

I would like to invite you to participate in our online lash competition, Lash Pro Contest 2018. We have an amazing theme: It’s showtime! More information on: http://www.lpc.si

Eyelash Extensions

Swedish Masters

2018

by Daniel Olssen To tell the story about Swedish Masters we will have to go back to the autumn of 2015. After Jane had competed in her first big championship Europe Lash 2015 in Poland an idea started blossoming in two lash artists’ minds; ĵĵ

What would it take to organize a mastership in Sweden?

ĵĵ

Would anyone be interested?

ĵĵ

Could it be done by only 2 people?

As the Swede´s we are, we carefully considered it over a typical Swedish “fika” (Coffee and cookies) and came to the conclusion that we really have nothing to lose and no matter what it would at least be a great opportunity for people to come together and meet in real life instead of just seeing posts in Facebook groups. So, starting with slim to none budget, no previous event planning skills we started marketing the event for 2016, we rented a venue, reached out to a few of the judges we met in Poland and the ball was rolling! Right from the start we ha d a huge interest and when we released the tickets on December 13th, 2015 our website actually crashed from all the people wanting to buy a ticket to compete! As you can probably figure, we freaked out! This was going to be huge! That year we sold 105 tickets and all of a sudden, we got inquiries from schools and shops all over Sweden wanting to exhibit and sponsor the competition which in turn lead into us having a competition and a small exhibition and people loved it!

Seeing the huge interest in Sweden for competitions has then led to us having scale up each year and this year we had 175 competitors + 25 live lash art competitors making us one of the biggest competitions in the world. It’s still an amazing feeling releasing the tickets the 13th and seeing the panic when our website crash - yes, it still does, even after moving to a dedicated server and scaling up each year and the feeling after closing the door as the prices ceremony ends is just amazing! All that happiness, excitement packed together for 2 days is just incredible to be part of! It’s now been roughly a month since Swedish Masters 2018 and we are constantly trying to make the competition bigger, better, bolder in every way. It’s a lot of work but seeing the effect of it in the lash industry for Sweden makes it all worth it. A lot of our rules and regulations are now a standard in the industry and all the bigger schools incorporate some or all of the rules for competing into their classes striving to make their students the best they can be. Being such a big competition, it is, we have had to make constant revisions of the rules and by now we have a well functioning system that is from our point, as fool proof as it can get. As we all know, competing is hard, and without clear rules and explanations there will be chaos, this is why we have floor judges with set points to deduct on a separate scoresheet regarding

47 - Lashes

hygiene and behaviour during the actual competition and main judges with a set scoresheet that is checked by 2 different persons before the actual scores are being typed into a computer to get the winner selected. All scoresheets are handed out to the competitors at the ceremony and there is full transparency in judging, scores making the chance for mistakes almost impossible. We believe this is what has made the competition into what it is today, a great event that people look forward to a year in advance. Our concept has now been recognized outside of Sweden and we will incorporate all of this into our next project, which will be the Lash Games at Olympia 2018, where we will have the same system for judging, the same system with floor judging and scoresheets. Trying to bring the transparency into a major event that is open for international competitors is a challenge, but we believe it will set a better standard for the business and together with a few other organizers around the world we might actually see a fixed standard for how competitions are carried out and more people willing to take the chance of competing in a large scale competition.

So, what can we expect in 2019? Well, we are already making the plans, we picked a new gorgeous venue and our exhibition is growing with our competition. By now we are looking at a venue that’s 3000sqm, with room for competitions in nails, lashes and more. An exhibition area that can be filled with all different things in beauty, tying the knot and incorporating everything into a great weekend of fun, networking and competition is the goal and with the help of our amazing sponsors, judges and our small team we are certain it will be a great event that brings the business even further ahead! And to all of those that want to do the same trip as we did, we can only say one thing: Do it! The feedback you get after a successful event is just amazing! IF you don’t know where to start, reach out, ask other organizers how they did it, what not to do and what to do. This is an amazing industry and there are so many big organizers willing to help you on your way if you just ask! For those of you that hesitates to compete, what do you have to lose? See it as a mini training where you get a scoresheet of what you need to improve to become the best. Just entering and promoting it will give you new clients, the marketing value of going to competitions brings you miles ahead of those that doesn't‌ Dream big, be brave and take the chance!

How to Win

Business Awards by Louise Tierney Lash Inc Editor-in-Chief

This is the third instalment in our series on how to become an award-winning business.

Step 2 - Criteria

It may seem obvious but make sure you obtain the entry criteria in full. If this isn’t readily available, email the organisers or call to request a copy. Have this in front of you and continually refer to it as you write your entry. You must clearly address and answer the award category criteria as fully as you can. The little things may mean a lot, remember!

Deadlines Again, it sounds obvious but don’t forget the deadline. You may have the world’s most amazing entry but if you miss the entry deadline you have missed out on winning. Entry deadlines are usually final and they won’t allow you more time. Make sure you know when your entry needs to be with the organizers, when the presentation is (if applicable) and any other deadlines you need to be aware of.

Eligibility

“Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get Make absolutely sure you are eligible for entry. The last thing you want to if you don’t.” – Pete Seeger do is spend weeks on an entry to find out later on that you can’t enter. e.g. Some awards require you to be trading for 2 years or more – others may want you to be located in a certain geographical location. Always double check and leave nothing to chance. The word count is usually not a suggestion, so if it states, for example, a maximum of 200 words then stick to it. Make it 200 words or just under. However, do not make it 50 words. If you go massively under the word count it looks like you don’t have much to say about your business and you Set out your strategy clearly and simply. You can use the notes near the end will probably not even be considered. Make sure your entry is typed on of this book to help layout your timeline and general plan. Don’t rush this a computer and in a large enough font, so others can read it easily. 14pt as it’s very important. Times New Roman is what I use, as it’s prominent and clear.

Number Of Words

Set Objectives

Schedule The Work

Supporting Info

Schedule in time to write your award and make it a professional task as if meeting an order. If you don’t do this, you probably won’t write it. I found this approach worked well for me. Be disciplined and write a small amount each day or if you prefer, set yourself aside a day to get it all done. You know how you work best.

Demonstrate business impact. Prove your claims without giving away confidential information. Use graphs when possible to show statistical information. Judges have many entries to look through so make it that bit easier for them to clearly see your important information at a glance. Show in a clear manner how you have made an impact in your industry.

“Nothing is more harmful to the service, than the neglect of discipline; for that discipline, more than numbers, gives one army superiority over another.” — George Washington

Anything I need to post I prefer to use Special Delivery or courier rather than recorded delivery or normal post as it gives your submission importance and will be delivered next working day.

51 - Business

If emailing your entry, make sure you check which format the organisers prefer to receive. For most companies it will be PDF or Microsoft Word .doc format. If it’s in Word format it is best to save in 97-2003 format as most people will have the software to open this. I once sent an entry, which I saved in a later version of MS Word, and as it couldn’t be opened, it was therefore not forwarded to the judges, which I only discovered after the judging has finished. Ask for confirmation that they have received and opened it.

Do Your Homework – Previous Winners & Other Entrants

Be careful not to sound whiny if you have a story about struggle, always tell it with a positive upbeat feel. Pain to pleasure; problem to solution. Remember no one likes to listen to a moaner and you want the judges to feel good about your business. Awards will not be given to companies who have made the judges feel miserable. “Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought” – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi ‘Doing your homework will pay dividends and certainly make the judges feel valued’ ‘Try and imagine if the situation were reversed – what would you be looking for in a submission?’

Do your research into previous winners; this may reveal information you ‘Judges are human just like you and if they take to you quickly then you’re can replicate to help you win. Any top awards website will usually promote well on the way to success’ and list the awards nominees. They might also provide full details of why they won. Visit your competition’s website and search the Internet to find out any other information giving you an added advantage in the process. Understand all the terms and conditions of your entry. There may be “Research serves to make building stones out of stumbling blocks” – something in there effecting your eligibility or require you not to enter Arthur D. Little similar awards in the same year. Make sure you know all the terms and conditions before you even begin planning. Look at your competition and try to counteract their strengths. If they are strong in one area you must show you are stronger in the same field. If they are weak in one area put extra effort into showing why you are so strong in this area. Back it up with statistics, client testimonials and anything Are you submitting a hard copy by mail or soft copy by email? If posting the else that will get your point across clearly. If you’re not stronger in the said entry send a traceable way to safeguard your application. Take no chances. area, compensate by highlighting other areas that you certainly do excel in.

Terms & Conditions

How To Submit

Judges It might be possible to find out who will be on the judging panel. You might then be able to tailor your entry to relate to the judge’s interests. For example, if you know what industry a judge is from you can look for ways to relate what you’re doing in your business to theirs. This is especially important for very technical companies or like my business, as a beauty company with a make-up judging panel. In many cases I did not sell massive benefits of the product from a female user’s point of view but from a distributor point of view or spoke about the innovative use of ingredients and how an idea for a particular product actually came from researching into the automotive industry. Judges like to hear real stories and are particularly interested in your journey rather than just the product. Here is a something for you to think about. The judges are trying to decide between two companies who both appear to be at similar stages, have had similar achievements, similar turnover and profit. However one started the business with £100 and the other with investment of £100,000. Both have achieved the same but how they started can make all the difference in the judge’s eyes.

Save A Copy Make sure you save a copy or two in case there are any problems and you need to re-submit. Also make a backup elsewhere as your entry can also be used as a good template for future applications.

Timeline Try to stick to your entry schedule and you won’t have many problems or anxieties as the deadline approaches. Give yourself time at the end to have a few people review it before submission. Having a few people read over your entry is good for two reasons. Firstly, for spelling and grammatical mistakes. You cannot proof read your own work as your mind becomes accustomed to mistakes and rectifies them in your mind. Secondly, this enables the other person to pick up on anything missing or anything that doesn’t come across the way you intended. There is sometimes a fine line between telling people about your achievements and being boastful and brash.

If you have a story of overcoming adversity, share it. If it took you 2 years to get the money to start, share it. If you had to make sacrifices – share. If you didn’t, then look for another way to deliver your story. Perhaps the Keep a note of the organiser’s timeline so you know when done etc. Once generation of apprenticeship places, setting up in a deprived area and you’ve gone through this process for the future as you become adept at creating jobs in the community etc. producing applications.

Social Media:

The Spotlight

by Miranda Tarpey and Gabriella Gerardi

Lash Inc UK Editor & Assistant Editor Social Media has to be the most exciting part of our business, where would we all be without it? This is a new section of the magazine where we want to highlight some of our favourite social media accounts.

Humanize your Brand Our two favourite Social Media sites are Facebook and Instagram! Using both of these for our business gives us a a chance to truly connect to our current and future clients on a personal level. This is hugely important as many people do not trust companies or brands until they see real life proof! Let's be honest, we always check someone out on social media before we make a purchase or book in!

Increase your Website Traffic What a better and easy way to actually drive more traffic to your website? (You must have a website!) Having your website connected to your social media accounts is a must, especially with Instagram with their new Shopping Tags! We will be covering Instagram marketing next issue so keep an eye out!

Low Cost Marketing It's basically free marketing for your business, how could you turn it down? Each platform have ads but they are super affordable and our a must if your are starting out.

Our Favourite Accounts We've had a little dig around on our phones, and found some accounts that we love! Style, photos, content and everything else drew our attention to them. Participating in social chats—like the weekly #HootChat on Twitter—can also be a great way to increase your visibility, get attention from new people, showcase your expertise, and drive traffic to your website.

Standing out Branding If you take a look at all three of the accounts we have spotlighted, you will notice that they all flow. They are all in keeping with their branding colours and themes. @Bellabeauty_13, her logo is a light pink and white logo and this is reflected in the posts that she shares. Sticking to her logo colours, not only keeps her account look sleek and clean but it allows her clients to always recognise her posts when they pop on their timelines.

@million_lashes_uk Content Instagram has to be the best social media platform for our industry, it helps us promote our work! Posting pictures or videos of our fluffy lash sets is priority and we are both suckers for scrolling on timeline to see beautiful sets, but you need to make sure you mix it up, keep it changing and don't stay in a boring situation with just lashes. @million_lashes_uk is a fantastic example for great content. Looking at her account we can already see she does amazing sets of lashes, and she only has four of twelve posts of the actual eye. She's mixed it up, incorporated a few quotes, some inspirational pictures and a client photo to show off! This is a great mixture of content and exactly what we need to aim for, teach your clients about your lashing, show them a fan, show them how you make a fan and why they take the time they do. Give them an inspirational quote as everyone needs a lift every now and then.

Choose the angles correctly, for example when taking a picture of your client's perfect volume set, don't take the photo under her nose so we can see up to her brain through her nostrils. Cut the nose out and go diagonally in - @salongood shows us how to master the lash photo! Her three photos of close up sets are attractive, clean and make us want to get our lashes done! You can also invest in a macro lens off eBay or Amazon, great for close up sets!

Stories

If you haven't already, get yourself on Instagram stories. Anyone else like us and love stories? Maybe we're super nosey but since stories, I've found myself more emotionally attached to brands then ever before - ding ding ding this is ideal for building your brand. Use this service on Instagram and own it. Create stories of your day at lashing, talk to your clients, launch new price lists and speak to people! They want to get to know you as a person, because that's just who we are as humans and it works very well Possible the most important part of Instagram, photos. You probably see in marketing. If you feel like your Instagram account stands out from the a lot of successful instagram accounts with amazing photos and think crowd, has something different to any others and you want to be published “how!!? - well there are a lot of things you can do yourself to create better in the magazine to show us all how it's done, all you have to do is tag us on posts without being a professional photographer. If you haven't already, Instagram through stories or Posts! @uklashinstitute invest in a good light to take your photos. You can find some really good cheap ones on Amazon if you can't afford the luxury ones. We cannot wait to see everyone instagram, and

Business Breakdown:

Always Growing

and Always Learning by Andi Ramsay Lead Designer, Lash Inc

If I had to specify the one thing that keeps me motivated I would have to say, “Learning something new.” From my very first job, right through to the amazing clients I choose to work with in my business today, to putting together each issue of Lash Inc.; I always look for something to learn. Education can be the silver bullet. This magazine never disappoints me. Every single issue I learn a little bit more, things I never knew before are suddenly part of my knowledge, and the Lash world is stuffed full of things to learn. Each issue also brings me opportunities to learn something new about my own profession too. Every article needs its own layout, a way for it to easily communicate its message so that people read it and understand it. If I’ve done my job properly then the design shouldn’t even be noticed because people are absorbed by the content (and I call that “The Ninja Principle”, I’ll be talking about that in another issue!) As many of you may know, I am not a Lash Artist. Im a new-comer to the lash world, so I cannot speak intelligently about lash art, or the practicalities of cyanoacrylates (although I could do a riveting ten minutes on the chemistry and discovery of them!) I do, however, know business. I’ve been running a business in one form or another since 2001. I’ve been a trauma therapist, a photographer, a video producer, and a designer (I’ve retired from therapy, but still do all the rest). I’ve run my business as a sole trader, and then as a VAT registered, limited company. Running a business can seem daunting. If it weren’t for my Gryffindorlike ‘run-in-without-looking’ attitude I would probably never have started a business. Everyone else in business seems to have it together, they know

what they’re doing, they probably went to Harvard and got an MBA or something like that. But they're mostly bluffing. Over the years I have come to learn that nearly every business is the offspring of making lots of mistakes and learning from other people. Whatever kind of business you run; just you on your own, working under the umbrella of a larger salon, or running the show and employing other people; you will face many of the same challenges that others face. You will need to do a lot of the same tasks that other business owners do. You will need the same knowledge too. Don’t be afraid. You’ve got this. Look to the people who admit they are always learning (and tune out the ones who tell you they have it all sussed!), learn from those who speak clearly with understanding and experience, talk honestly with your peers and your heroes, ask as many questions as you can (but not all to the same person, respect their time), soak up knowledge at every opportunity.

Keep growing by con stantly learning. x

Watertight Marketing

Profit First

by Bryony Thomas

by Mike Michalowicz

ISBN: 978-1908746344

ISBN: 978-0735214149

Are you wasting your money on marketing? Most businesses are. They’ve got serious profit leaks. So when they run their marketing Taps, revenue simply pours out of a leaky Bucket. Watertight Marketing is no ordinary marketing book. There’s no jargon. And it’s not about the latest over-hyped tactic. This is a book that tackles business fundamentals. It’s the book on marketing that makes all the others make sense. Following the process laid out in this book puts you in control of your business growth.

Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, f lawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Mike has developed a behavioural approach to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows.

Building your Successful

Lash Business

by Michelle Meredith-Rath www.sinfullashes.com

How did you do it? This is the number one question I get asked. The short answer, I worked 24/7 in the beginning. The long answer, I did not open a lash business, I opened a business. Building a business is like building a house, you need a foundation, flooring, beams and a roof.

The Foundation - Start with a business plan A business plan doesn’t have to be encyclopedic and it doesn’t have to have all the answers. A well-prepared plan – revisited often – will help you steer your business all along its growth curve. Try to think of your business plan as a living, breathing project, not a one-time document. Break it down into mini-plans: one for marketing, one for pricing, future growth and so on. ĵĵ

relevant and authoritative. In simple terms your web pages have the potential to rank in Google so long as other web pages link to them. For those new to SEO, the above definition may sound complicated. In simpler terms Search Engine Optimization is a way to improve your website so that it will appear closer to the top positions in the search results of Google, Yahoo, Bing or other search engines. When you perform a search on Google (or any other search engine) the order by which the returning results are displayed, is based on complex algorithms. These algorithms take a number of factors into account to decide which web page should be shown in the first place, second place, etc. A good website company will manage your SEO as most business owners do not have the time to follow the ever-changing algorithms of search engines.

Clicks, Clicks and more Clicks Placement is also based on clicks. So, having your website listed externally can also help your web ranking on all of your social media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and your live feeds. Live feeds give people a look at who you are as a business person. It can be as simple to expressing your dedication to service, to the types of products you use. Stories Are great ways to keep people engaged. Remember to add a link to your website in your stories and mention them in your feeds.

Building a website is the first step every new business owner should take, you must factor it into your startup costs. No website means you are losing Beauty sites, city sites, anywhere and everywhere you can. Any click is a your business, 85% of potential clients will pull out their phones and good click. search for their service providers. A good website creates trust as well as 24-hour accessibility. Your website is your calling card, what do you want it to say about you? Be clear in who you and your brand are.

Website and Social Media Tips Have quality photos. If you are not a great photographer, you need to become better. Use a light ring, great for lashing as well as taking cleaner photos. Download good photo editing apps. I like Facetune2. You can do so many things with it.

Placement on the first page of search engines is key. Studies show that most people will not search past page 3 for services. You need to have solid SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) to find your ranking on search engines. For your home and service page use professional photos. If you do not have SEO is the name given to activity that attempts to improve search engine them, you can use adobe photo or any professional stock photo page for a rankings. In search results Google™ displays links to pages it considers small fee.

Separate Personal and Business Finances

Attract More Clients

Always keep your personal and business finances separate. This entails getting a business credit card and putting all related expenses on it. This should help you track your outlays and keep you in control.

That’s a no-brainer, right? But how do you go about doing that? Website! It’s a must! Create a referral program. Look for unique marketing opportunities. Beauty shows, bridal shows, hair salons.

Retail Upsell Existing Clients Think of every inch of your room, salon, lash bar as a return on your investment. You need to educate your clients on the necessity of taking home products. Every location should have 3 or more lash products to retail. If you sell 3 products a day with each having a $10 return your monthly profit is $600, yearly $7,200. Hire Professional Help Everyone needs help, especially a budding entrepreneur interested in making a huge success of his venture. Sometimes, it pays off to engage the services of an expert, even if it is on a part-time basis. They can help you determine where your business is, where it is heading by using and analysing your data. Make sure you hire someone you trust, though. Whether it is tax planning for the next financial year, or payment for the current year, their expertise can go a long way in guiding you and bringing you peace of mind.

Roof When is it time to add your first employee?

New services and products are an easy way to generate more income. Charge More It seems counter-intuitive to try and create more business by charging more but it really isn’t. Salon clientele expect a certain level of service—a certain level of luxury— You can use a higher price point to actually set yourself apart from the low-cost competition and create an air of exclusivity. Identify a Niche and Dig In Whether your niche is organic products, the Zen feel of your storefront, or catering to busy moms who just need to get away from their kids, finding it can mean the difference between success and failure. Ideally, you should do your market research before you ever open your doors. Take a look at the salons that are around your potential business and what they offer. Can you spot any gaps they aren’t filling? Can you compete with exclusive offerings, top-tier services, or price point? Make the effort to really identify what your market is missing and then do your best to fill that hole.

When you are turning away new clients it’s time to add someone to your team When you have reached a place that your schedule is booked out and you find clients getting angry that you don’t have appointments available, Invest in Your Staff you are ready! Your staff are your brand. These people are the ones who are creating What to know before you make your first hire. the experience for your clients, they are the ones that are selling your products, they are the ones on which your business rises or falls. If you’re only taking salary into account responsibility to cultivate them and reward them for excellent performance. when hiring an employee, you’re failing to account for the myriad of other expenses (and possible expenses) that could come into play. For example, Build on the Best and Forget the Rest you have to pay 6.2 percent of each employee’s salary (up to $118,500) for social security tax. So, if you’re paying an employee $40,000 per year, In order for your lash business to succeed, you constantly need to build its you’re responsible for $2,600 in social security tax. You need workman’s best aspects (customer service, product offerings, and marketing) in order comp insurance, a payroll company, scheduling app, if you’re not already to carve out your market share. Superwoman Syndrome:

Stress and Anxiety

in your lash business. by Sarah Humphreyson

Lash Inc Senior Journalist Eyelash Queen Lash & Beauty Lounge Do you remember the day you discovered eyelash extensions? I remember mine; it was at a trade show back in 2007 and the procedure was being demonstrated on a model. It stopped me in my tracks. What was this wizardry?

But did you know that being overwhelmed can cause stress - which in turn can cause conditions such as anxiety, depression and physical ailments? It is not a badge of honour how busy you can be you won’t be remembered for how busy you were when you die. TAKE A DAY OFF!

Every high has a low!

Tips on How To Combat Stress and Anxiety

I was hooked. I imagine you were also the same when you found out about this amazing procedure and went off to train in it! The excitement you feel when you discover something new, try a new product, when you create a stunning set of lashes and how happy your Client is when she looks in the mirror, the rush you get from the likes and comments when you post it on social media - the sheer pride you feel when you are turning away customers and upping your prices… Those are some of the positive parts of our industry. But today, I want to talk about some of the downsides. I went 10 years at FULL PELT in the Eyelash industry - working EVERY DAY, from eyes open to eyes closed. Be it with clients, students, research, practising techniques and everything in-between! I was hospitalised at least twice with serious illnesses and had numerous mental breakdowns - burnout, exhaustion, physical ailments and crippling anxiety before I realised that this is NOT the way I wanted to live. Lashing is a drug. A drug for clients who become addicted to their beautiful eyes and a drug for lash artists who just cannot get enough!

What is Superwoman Syndrome?

ĵĵ

Turn Off Your Phone! - Evenings, Sundays, an hour before bed, seriously! Don’t answer the phone past certain times or train clients to expect it, don’t stress yourself to reply straight away. Seeing a constant carousel of updates from social media has been proven to cause feelings of worthlessness which in turn can add to stress

ĵĵ

Spending Time with Family - if you have children have reliable childcare. Realise how important they are, and how they will always be your support, remember who you are doing this for!

ĵĵ

Digital Detox - go abroad somewhere different and LEAVE YOUR PHONE AT HOME! I am about to do this for the 4th year running and it is actually the most amazing, refreshing reset I’ve ever done.

ĵĵ

Taking Breaks in The Work Day - I make my staff take 1/2 hour every day. You have to eat! We also love a kitchen pow wow at 12pm!

ĵĵ

Get A Hobby - Make it completely unrelated and something different. Do some meditation and mindfulness, yoga, exercise and a eat healthy diet,

ĵĵ

Be Strict - With clients make sure you have booking fees, T&C, patch tests, consultations, all paperwork in order and with yourself make sure you don't get involved in any drama, negativity or bitching.

But working too much and acquiring yourself something known as “Superwoman Syndrome” is not going to do you or your family any good. Superwoman syndrome is when you feel like you have to do ALL THE ĵĵ Make lists! Write in your diary and check it so you know what you THINGS and then some. Never satisfied, always striving to achieve and are doing day by day/week by week excel, with a million and one things to do at once. Not necessarily a bad thing, it is always great to push yourself, set goals and then smash them and I am so proud of you for that. The women of today have so much on Remember… You cannot pour from an empty cup. Look after yourself first! their plates it is no wonder we can feel overwhelmed.

How I Became A Successful

Business Woman by Donna May May'D Beautiful

I first stepped into the beauty industry when I was just 15, I had finished school and enrolled in a hairdressing apprenticeship, I was earning £50 a week plus tips and loved life. Shortly after receiving my qualification my salon closed down and I was out of a job. While searching in the big wide world for jobs I realised I wanted to earn more, be successful and have not just a job but a career, however there weren't many Hairdressing roles available so I applied for a customer service apprenticeship and ended up landing a highly respected role in HR.

Becoming a Business Owner Over Night I met my husband and we started a family. This was all great until I had to go back to work after maternity leave, pay nursery fees that were as much as what I was earning. I soon hated my once loved job and I was missing out on my children so I left. I went back to my hairdressing roots and started working mobile, around the children being at preschool and my husband being home from work and liked that I was a bit independent and earning a little bit of my own money again.

confidence and I was then saying to my clients this is my work this is what I can achieve on you. It became my selling point, I was wearing a good set of lashes and my client base grew. In turn the more clients I got the more confident I became in my business. It gave me the passion to strive for more, I wanted to offer more, so went on to train in Russian Volume lashes. It was just becoming popular in my area so again I had to sell it and become confident in application, who better to play around on then myself. Wearing Russian Volume then not only gave myself more confidence in my appearance but got my clients asking ‘ ooh what lashes have you got on?’ They wanted what I had, and with Russian Volume being a more expensive treatment my business over night started earning more money!

Lashes Changed My LIFE

When I sit and think about it, I don’t know what gave me more confidence? Was it wearing these beautiful lashes that changed my appearance and made me feel better about myself, I didn’t look like the sleep deprived mum of 6 young children rushing around on the school run, I looked bright eyed and a little glamorous. Or was it that clients were loving the treatment that I was offering and they were recommending me to their friends and then their friends of friends and so on. Lashes soon took over and it was In 2012 I found lashes. I started treating myself to having them done. the only treatment I offered. Lashes became my business. Lashes have It gave me a little bit of me time away from the children and I loved the changed my life, my families life, yes I work harder and sometimes late result. The more I had them done the more I loved how they changed my into the night but it has given me amazing opportunities not only as a appearance and I got compliments on them too - I was hooked. My clients Mum and able to spend that quality time with my children and not miss were then asking if I could do them so I saved a bit of money and invested out but as a business woman. and took a training course. That was the changing point in me just being a mobile hairdresser with a few clients making ends meet, earning just a few extra pounds each week to working 30+ hours a week with my own business. I’m now starting my next chapter as I have lucky enough to be selected to be an educator for the UK Lash Institute, after completing my Mega Volume training with Miranda Tarpey which also led me to win my first award in lashes when I placed 3rd in the expert category for Mega Volume. 3 years into my lashing career I had built up a large clientele and I was I’m looking forward to being that educator that passes on knowledge and a working 7 days a week supporting my family of 7, soon to be 8 of us as I was skill set that makes the difference for another woman and her family. 7 months pregnant with our 6th child. I was soon the main earner and in a position that enabled my husband to make the jump, leave his job of the In our industry there is an army of strong, past 16 years and set out with his own business too.

The Next Adventure… Being An Educator

Six Children and A Career..

It got me thinking how much lashes had changed things in my life, what have lashes done for other women? Since when had lashes became so important? Why had they become so important? I made it my goal to train with the best in the industry, learn from them, not only to be a great Lash Artist but learn from them in business too. I was seeing these amazing powerful business women, empowering and inspiring other women to become independent business women themselves and I loved it.

empowered women who have got that work/ life balance, who have successful businesses in something they not only love but are so passionate about. I hope my story will inspire you to become whatever you wish to be, and I am more than happy to be there, to listen, and to help in anyway I can! @Mayd_beautiful

The Birth of Russian Volume I started playing around and applying my own lashes thinking I’ve got to be my best advertisement. I soon got the knack of applying classic lashes and would get compliments like ‘your lashes are lovely, who does them?’ Or ‘it’s a shame you can’t do them yourself’ well actually yes I can. It gave me
