I cannot believe how quick the 3rd issue has come round!

Hi Everyone!

We are so thankful to have you back reading the magazine. We couldn’t wait to put this issue together. We go into detail about winning awards and gaining a trophy and delve deep into your business competition.

What makes healthy competition and how to use it effectively to succeed. We have some great business articles as well as exciting lash reads!

In the last three months I have travelled to some amazing places, including Japan for the first ever Japanese competition and conference organised by Mariko from Marie Rush. Followed by some thoroughly intense volume classes! This was my first visit to Tokyo and I instantly fell in love with these beautiful people and their country, I have so much respect for their culture and I cannot wait to go back!

I also got to go back to Australia, although not my first visit, it was my first time in Brisbane. The start of the trip I was teaching a Mega Volume class, which was followed by a competition run by the beautiful Joy from LashJoy! There’s lots to read in this issue so I hope you sit back, put your feet up and enjoy your copy!

No matter where you’re located or what your niche is, there’s a lash competition for you.

These contests play a bigger role in the industry than many techs may realise.

Of course, placing high brings exposure, helping to further careers. However, there’s more to simply taking part than meets the eye…

The Fear of Entering Sadly, I hear techs talking themselves out of entering competitions all the time. Phrases like ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘It’s a waste of time entering as I won’t win anything’ or ‘There’s so many good people already entering so I won’t stand a chance’ are commonplace around competition time.

Every Christmas I run an online competition. It’s free and there are spot prizes to be won, yet some techs are still scared to enter. With prizes available for taking part it’s a shame to hear that some people are too afraid to get involved.

I Decided to Dig Deeper…

It seems that some people were scared of critique. However, it’s important to remember that critique is good. It gives you an indication of where you went wrong and how to improve in the future.

Some were scared of what their peers would think, when in actual fact the majority of your peers will be supportive and you may even inspire them to enter themselves!

One of the biggest fears is the thought of coming last. Competitions don’t generally say who came last..

They usually give the final 3 results in reverse order.

And finally, if you’re one of the many people that think they’re not good enough, there have been plenty of competition WINNERS who had that same mentality – don’t underestimate your own strengths!

Live competitions are where I have witnessed the most nervous competition energy. Lashing at a competition is different from lashing in your own lash space. You can’t control your surroundings and you won’t have your familiar things around you. If you travel abroad for a competition then you may not have even met your model until the day of the competition. These things can cause some techs to panic.

If things are out of your control then it’s important to stay as calm as possible.

Stress is not a great problem resolver.

As a judge it’s been enlightening to see people shocked when they have won or placed in their category. With so much talent it’s a reminder that most people aren’t expecting to win – you’re all in the same boat!

Competition Camaraderie Dur ing my latest Chr ist mas competition I had a separate Facebook page detailing all the information. Most participants joined this page and it quickly became a social hub. As they awaited the results from the judges they started chatting to each other every day, posting funny GIF’s, posts and generally just having fun.

It goes without saying that the more competitions you enter the more experience you’ll have. Stepping outside your comfort zone will build your confidence, as well as allowing you to reap the other rewards of taking part.

Taking the Plunge For a first competition it’s good to go into it with a positive attitude. Some things may be out of your control, like the temperature or humidity, but just remember that everyone else is facing the same challenges - you’re not alone!

Each competition will come with its own rules so it’s important to familiarise yourself with those beforehand. This will help you to feel prepared and composed on competition day.

There’s also no need to feel out of your depth. There will be different categories for different abilities, so if you have been lashing for less than a year then you won’t be competing with techs that have been lashing for a lot longer.

So you need to try and stay relaxed, focused and positive. The more relaxed you are the less likely you are to make mistakes. The more focused you the less likely you are to feel rushed, as your mind won’t be wandering. The more positive you are the happier you will feel during the competition.

Yes, it’s a challenge and yes you can get some nerves, but just embrace it. Think of it as stepping stone, stay calm but most importantly, enjoy it!

What lengths are safe?

We can extend the natural lashes by a maximum of 3mm in the centre of the lash line. This does not mean to extend all lashes by 3mm, this is a guide that you can never go longer than 3mm.

Be Your Own

Whether you are new to the lash industry or have been around for a while, you will learn quickly that competition plays an integral role in your lash career.

Competition can teach us how to improve and show us what we are already striving to gain with clients. However, it can also make us aware of our flaws. The pressure of accomplishing such flaws to stay at the ‘top of our lash game’ can bring us to a deeply competitive place that can not be enjoyable. Constantly trying to justify our work or our position within the lash industry is hard to sustain. The sheer exhaustion of wanting to ‘win’ can dissemble growth.

When you start to build your lash empire, your only opponent should be You! Be your own competitor, seeking out opposition will produce ‘enemies’ and leave you battling others and situations that do not exist. Let your success be internally focused ‘Me versus Me’ will break down any defensive barriers that will hinder your success in the beauty industry.

Public Perception Being in the beauty industry means your work is on show for the world to judge, thus we are more vulnerable to criticism. Progression is key, the lash industry does not need to be a series of increasing challenges, trusting yourself

and growing as a lash artist will warrant fulfilment and success. Don’t allow your goals to be compromised by others.

The beauty industry can be cut throat, it is important to learn quickly that you can not control others. In our journey we may meet that one lash artist or client that will try to change public perception of you or tarnish your business. If we stay true to our own ambitions, our own path and constantly strive to improve, will combat such situations. Compete, but compete with yourself. Letting others seek control of your business will only lead to failure.

Let inspiration glide any opposition, don’t engage in pressure from other lash artists, instead take inspiration from them and nurture your own ambitions.

Setting Goals Personal challenges w ill gain satisfaction, a happy therapist will harvest a happy client. Whether you accomplish your personal goals, only you will know. Grow your own determination, building your business based on your opponent will produce a lonely lash career. Only you can build

your empire, choose wisely and always be kind! Healthy Competition On the other hand, I am aware of healthy competition being a great way to motivate yourself and your business.

Competition can lead to improvement, especially in such a dense industry like the beauty industry it can be hard to stand out.

Competition allows you to beat the rest and put all your energy into your clients giving the best support and care. We all do lashes, but looking after our clients is something we all do differently.

Watching other competitors and learning what you can do better in your own business is a great way to grow!

As long as you use competition as a healthy look into how you can improve your own business, you will come out stronger and better than ever.

Continue growing that lash business of yours!

How To Deal with

Cancellations and No-Shows

Cancellations and no shows are a big deal when it comes to your business. Every time someone cancels last minute or doesn’t show up to their appointment, you are out of pocket as it’s almost impossible to get someone else in so quickly. And it can cost you hundreds or thousands of pounds in month. So we have to avoid this kind of situation as much as possible. If you work with your dream target clientele, you shouldn’t have this problem at all but if you do, you can still train your clients to respect your time and business.

This is crucial as our clients are our “walking advertisement”.

Reminders- Are you reminding your clients about their appointment?

It’s pretty normal for someone to forget their appointment if they booked it a month ago, so it’s very important to remind them about it. You can either do it via text message or email. Most booking systems nowadays have an automated system that sends out the reminders and you don’t have to do it yourself. You just have to set up the time when they receive it. Our booking system sends out reminders 48h before which has worked out best for us because if the client has something coming up and she needs to move it, we still have 2 days to look for someone else to take the initial slot. I know that you might think that sending text messages is a costly expense but honestly would you rather spend 10p per message and make sure you have money coming in or not sending any message and have a chance to lose all of the money. We send out email reminders as well but to be honest, a lot of people might miss your email. They might get hundreds of emails a day and yours will be one of them.

fear speak up right now telling you that people might not want to book in if they need to pay deposit. I promise you, if they want lashes, they will pay deposit.

Just make sure the amount of deposit is enough to cover your expenses when they shouldn’t arrive and that they would be scared to lose the money. And make it super easy for them to pay that amount. There’s so many options to choose from how to charge like PayPal or card terminals. Bank transfers are also great but we have found that it’s too much work for a client. You want the whole process to be easy, fast and track-able.

3. Make your clients feel like it’s

difficult to move their appointment.

If they feel like they won’t get their lashes infilled because you are fully booked unless they come to their initial appointment, they will find a way. I’ve seen countless times how our clients will move mountains to get to their appointment because they don’t want to miss out on infills.

4. Have a clear cancellation and

people have bad intentions but some clients have habits of not showing up or cancelling last minute and not only with their lash appointment, but I’m pretty sure with everything in their life. When a client cancels last minute, we always explain them why it’s bad for us when they do it. Most likely they haven’t even thought about our side. If that doesn’t work then on the second time we explain that we might not be able to take her if this goes on.

And if it happens 3rd time we have to say goodbye to that client. They might not like it but it’s disrespectful to your business. You will always find another client who will be very responsible with their bookings.

These are very simple and small steps that will ensure that you would cut your no show and cancellation rate massively.

And it also means you are dealing only with clients who you like to work with as they are really committed to book in with you.

My first thought when I got to use these Lash Art lashes was the fact that the 0.07 lashes felt just slightly thicker than other 0.07 eyelash extensions I have used before.

I can understand where the name is from as I found the lashes fanned quite easily from the strip. I used the wriggle technique when fanning these lashes and it was fairly easy. Even when I tried fanning on the sticky strip, it was still very easy to use. I really like the fact that it has the amount of lashes numbered on each strip!

My thought when I first saw the adhesive was the packaging was wow! !

There has been a Lash event every weekend, whether there was a conference, a competition or a master trainer seminar - how amazing is that? Keeping your social media fresh and crisp is no mean feat. One way which worked well for me is to create art to celebrate the things that you and your followers are passionate about.

You could use various themes such as holidays, festivals, social issues, or even just celebrate the season - the possibilities are endless.

Colourful, themed art keeps your followers engaged, and can also bring a whole new clientele through your doors – people love pictures.

Every June, the LGBT+ community comes together across the world to celebrate Pride Month. This community is near and dear to my heart, so I have created a rainbow set to show my support.

Love Them or Hate Them?

Eyepatches -

The application of eyepatches can sometimes be tricky. Whether you are an experienced lash technician or a complete beginner, you should always follow these simple rules: ĵĵ

Use protein remover pads to wipe the eye area from any oils to ensure patches stick to the skin well. Eyepatches will not stick to oily skin properly.

ĵĵ

Use one pair of eyepatches per client and dispose them after the use

ĵĵ

Apply the eyepatches 1-2 mm below the waterline and cover the bottom lashes

ĵĵ

Adjust the eyepatches after your client has closed her eyes and secure the placement of patches with micropore tape if needed

ĵĵ

If any baby lashes pop out, cover them with micropore tape

But even if you follow all eyepatch application rules, you can still struggle sometimes.

Problem 1: Client’s bottom lashes are so strong and springy that they are popping out of the eyepatches Solution: place the eyepatches under the bottom Lashes and apply micropore tape on the top - all natural lashes will be “sandwiched” between the tape and eyepatches and will stay in place until the end of the treatment. Please make sure you stick the micropore tape to the back of the hand first, so it becomes less sticky. Otherwise you might find difficult to remove the tape after the treatment.

Problem 2: You have placed the eyepatches and they now look very comfortable for you and you are ready to start the lash application. Shortly after you start the treatment, your clients eyes start watering.

Solution: Before you start the treatment, lift the top eyelid up and check that the eyepatches are not touching your client’s eyes or the waterline. If eyepatches are touching the eyeball or the waterline, then it may irritate your client’s eyes, causing them to water and resulting with redness at the end of the treatment.

Problem 3: The gel always plumps out and sticks to your client’s eyes Solution: This is the after effect of the eyepatches applied too close your client’s eyes - it will scratch the eye inside. Make sure you check that the eyepatches are not touching the eyeballs of your client by lifting up the eyelid before starting the application.

Problem 4: You can’t see the lashes in the outer corner as they are bent under the eyepatches Solution: In order to get the lashes out from underneath the eyepatch, simply peel the patches up and move them down without pulling the eyelid down.

You can also use the help of tweezers to gently pull the lashes out from under the eyepatch.

I’ve just had my first brush with the International Lash Industry as this year’s host for The Lash Events UK Conference 2018. Similar to the ‘debutante’ culture across many societies where the ball gown takes centre stage, I too felt that my attire should make a ‘lashing’ impact, and those of you in attendance may have noticed I donned my ‘millennial’ style kilt. I did so for many reasons, but in the main to celebrate our International Editor Louise Tierney’s Scottish Roots in this truly global industry.

I first met Louise a few years ago at our former alma mater, Glasgow Caledonian University, where we were both invited to speak about our career journey.

I hail from a presenter/journalist background with the BBC, and it was the first time I had come across the Lash Industry – bar the time I bought some strip lashes for Halloween as I tried to pull off a Bollywood look!

What sparked my interest into this ‘alien’ industry is how Louise grew her business and brand from Glasgow, my home city. I remember Louise talking passionately about the ideas that came

I energised this word. In our career path we are not guaranteed instant success and we will all fail or have challenges at some stage. Some of these challenges take place away from our office and work; from health issues, to relationships, love and bereavement.

to her whilst sitting on a train. This led her acting upon her ideas right there and then via her laptop. She energised me away from the ‘media bubble’ which us luvvies so often tend to vacuum ourselves in.

It is imperative to allow ourselves time, space and balance. The point I was making to the students in attendance was to embrace such times in one’s career and use it as fuel, be it a rejection letter or email, and I took copies of my own rejection letters and emails to show the students.

I too spoke about my career path, across Radio and Television and simply offered an honest and brutal account of my career to date. I coupled this with some open and honest sub narratives from life’s journey, and I candidly spoke about my success, what inspired me, and the ‘F’ word.

After meeting Louise at this event, we met up for coffee (and cake!) in Glasgow and she suggested I could host one of her events in the future, explaining the foundations behind the UK Lash Conference and what it would entail.

‘Failure’.

I was still somewhat clueless at this stage, but signed up immediately, it’s the extrovert within me.

Broadcasting conveys the importance of networking at such events and conferences. Being a natural talker and extrovert I find networking and breaking the ice easy. I appreciate for others this may not be the case; of course I get nervous, but I use my platform as a Host/Presenter (and my Kilt!) to shield such nerves and turn it on its head, making it work for me.

If Louise and I hadn’t networked, the chances are I would never have had the opportunity to work in the lash industry.

In my experience nobody is that important that they won’t speak to you or give you some time at such an event, regardless of what industry you are in.

Never be afraid to approach industry leaders, mentors or a brand/company you are trying to connect with. If I hadn’t employed a ‘gallus’ (to use a good Glaswegian word) attitude I would be working behind the scenes in the media as opposed to being on air. Another reason I wore my Kilt at UK Lash Events 2018 was it simply draws an audience’s attention and people engage with me over it. So wear something that you feel confident in to express your own unique energy and style.

If you are a naturally shy person and find the networking side somewhat challenging, drop an email to the person or contact you are trying to connect with beforehand. A simple introduction and request a quick five minutes of their time at the conference.

People are generally nice (well most of the time!) and respond, sometimes not immediately but eventually.

friendships. I’m lucky to say that Louise and I became colleagues as result of our business networking; not only do we engage on ideas around the lash industry (as I take up the mantle of Men’s Style Editor for Lash Inc. International), we are also firm friends.

Onto the actual UK Lash Events 2018 itself, I write this a few weeks on from the conference in May. I’m raising a cheeky smile to myself as I’m still buzzing from Super Yacht! From preproduction between Glasgow and London, meeting UK Lash Events members for the first time, hosting and engaging with such an amazing array of talented delegates and guest speakers, forging genuine relationships, having very little sleep and sharing a hotel room with our lead designer Andi (who I had only met on the Friday!) to the pace and energy of it all!

I found it accelerated me professionally and personally.

I’ve learnt a lot from Louise so far about the industry and the learning curve continues. I took a lot away from Guest Speaker talks and engaging with them alongside delegates at the conference.

There are many sub narratives and

levels in this industry, and this has only further fuelled my interest to engage some more.

With open invites from new friends from Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, USA et al and vice versa including a round or two of Golf on Scotland’s lush courses with Borboleta’s lovely Kimber and Craig planned, my lash journey is set to continue…

Just like any method actor worth their salt, I embraced the conference with a Lash Lift. I’ve never been shy to embrace fashion and beauty culture that’s perhaps perceived as more ‘metro’ than ‘hetero’ and I truly felt a million dollars post treatment!

I loved the craft, technique and artistry that goes into such a treatment. The look it gave my eyes was uplifting, I felt it accentuated my natural lines and the actual spread of my lashes gave me a lot of confidence. This, coupled with borrowing Louise’s mascara in London, meant I was all set for hosting in London!

I now look forward to my next experience – lash extensions for men!

In this article I will share 7 important steps to help you increase your Instagram account’s reach and popularity and multiply your bookings or sales.

If the main reason is to sell then this should be visible on your profile from

the first sight. Don’t post sales posts just once a month and do not hide prices somewhere in the bottom corner.

Insert price right on the picture/advert and try posting sales posts at least once a week. Clients must see what service you are offering and how much you are charging for it.

4. Do not send clients to your website or another source for more details. Put all information into your post as every extra click lowers the chance of the client making a booking.

5. Create a review week. Ask your current clients to post pictures of their lashes by mentioning you in the post and tagging your account. You can make it happen by giving them discount for the next treatment in return. Happy clients will gladly share their experience with their followers and friends. The review/tag will help you get honest feedback on your service and free publicity/advertisement.

6. Publish posts about yourself. Show who you are, who is the person behind the account. Clients would love to know about you before they make a booking.

7. Share your life in your account.

People love to see what is happening behind the scenes. Give them a sneakpeek of what is happening in your life - people love seeing what you do outside work hours and things that might seem like a boring routine to you can be quite interesting for your followers.

My Journey

I was introduced to eyelash extensions in my early twenties when I was a model for Bikini Village. Their lash artist sat me down on a chair, tilted my head back and started lashing me. The result was absolutely stunning, and I was immediately hooked - how wonderful, lashes looking amazing at all times without any mascara.

I had a very lucrative career in food and beverage at the time but lashes always stayed in the back of my mind.

I finally decided to get certified, just out of curiosity - who would have known where this would have lead me.

I absolutely fell in love with lashing, it is my passion.

As a perfectionist, I wanted to know everything there was to know about lashes, so I travelled worldwide to attend master classes and conferences in order to offer my clients the best.

I was lashing twelve hours a day, seven days a week. I dedicated every hour of the day to mastering my craft. Testing and experimenting on clients, I played with curls, thicknesses, lengths, textures and colours. My wish was to enhance my client’s natural beauty, without making them look too obvious.

I invented my own style when it came to classic, and later on transferred it to Hybrid and Volume. In every single set I made, I wanted it to be the most beautiful in the world, to make my clients look amazing.

I developed my own techniques and lash designs, and soon enough people were asking me to train them and to provide them with lash products.

Personally, I like to style very intense sets for photo shoots and more natural sets for every day.

Dare to Be Different!

Play around; There are so many styles and different ways to define your work.

Most technicians stick to the basics, but you don’t have to follow the trends and do what everybody else is doing in order to be successful.

A few years later, I founded World Beauty University.

We now offer services and training in classic lashes, volume lashes, lash lifts, micro blading, threading, sugar wax, scalp micro pigmentation, nails and teeth whitening.

It’s important to personalise your work in order to stand out. Don’t be scared to try different things to find out what you like, what looks good, and what you’re good at.

It has been an amazing journey that took me to Russia, Rome, London, Prague, Paris, Hong Kong, China, Tokyo, Australia, Mexico and many beautiful states in the USA. Every place I went, I made great friends and business opportunities.

Wanting to be like others is far from being the best thing to do. In order to stand out, you need to have your own style, don’t be afraid to be different.

I am an entrepreneur, single mom of an incredible 14-year-old son, four dogs, I live in sunny California and I am the founder of Stella Lash. My life journey has been filled with ups and downs and all arounds, and through it all, what has remained true is my passion for love, wellness, and beauty from within. I am inspired by making a difference in someone else’s life.

This year I learned one of the most rewarding life lessons; How to selfheal.

Over the past few years, life has been a gigantic roller coaster. My ride has meant changing the way I run my business, moving from to Southern California; losing my number one cheerleader, my dad; helping my son adapt to his new environment; and dealing with my own stress and anxiety.

It has not been easy! The fear was setting in all around me. Every person on this planet struggles with some type of fear, and that is what keeps us from moving ahead. We allow ourselves to let fear control our thoughts and emotions.

Failure isn’t easy either. Everyone reaches a point in their life where they can either give up or keep fighting. I am a fighter! Throughout the years I have been battled addiction, ADHD, and other complex health issues which all require that I take several different medications.

The most rattling experience of my life is when I felt like I was having a heart attack. I called 911 and was rushed to the hospital with my blood pressure

reading 220/137. It turned out that what I was experiencing was an anxiety attack.

Anxiety is scary! I had tingling in my left arm for about a month, starting from the Vegas Trade show in June 2017. Fast forward to the day I called 911, it literally felt like my left breast was being squeezed so hard that it was going to burst - a huge wake up call.

At the same time, I moved my business 2,400 miles away, with visions of starting fresh. I didn’t understand how hard it would be to trust the business would continue to grow with the same quality and efficiency as when I was in sole charge.

This was change that I wasn’t prepared for. As a result of this, my body started breaking down with stress and anxiety.

Immediately, I developed psoriasis and eczema, hives and rashes appeared up and down the sides of my whole upper torso, and I experienced hot flashes that made me think I must be going through early menopause, one doctor diagnosed this as thyroid dysfunction.

Once I stepped into my strengths, the shift started to happen. I realised that I have the power within myself to change.

I changed my mindset from negative to positive and connected with my happy, loving soul, and not only did I start finding bigger and better solutions for my business but I also found it within my personal health.

I couldn’t understand what was happening because just a few months ago, I was finally feeling the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever felt. I thought I had most of it worked out, after all, I was moving to sunny Southern California.

I surrendered to a healthier way of life, starting small, and changed my entire diet. I cut out processed sugars and foods and eliminated the bottle of wine I drank each night.

What I didn’t anticipate, however, was my nervous system responding to the stress from this sudden change, and I had to go back to the drawing board.

Once I had stopped the self-judgement and graced myself with love, then my world opened up in ways beyond my dreams.

This is where my strengths came in - I flourish in finding solutions to problems and am good at testing my limits. I research and experiment to the very last, and this is how I developed my own line. This really works in anything that you do, not just within the Lash Industry.

I started to manifest my visualisations and started to think about what was truly important.

I always research and seek the best quality, unfortunately you have to go through quite a bit of quantity to figure it out where the best quality to be found.

I have spent so much of my life in the beauty industry, developing innovative products, ideas and solutions. We are all broken in some way. I want to make an impact in this industry and help people step into their overall wellness.

I want to see them step in their whole beauty, which only comes from within.

Nicole Bray is the one person who has made such an amazing positive impact on my journey, helping me tune into my inner self.

Nicole is an expert in being mindful and connecting within yourself on a spiritual level. She truly has helped me find my inner Goddess, as she guides me through yoga, meditation, mindful awareness, and spiritually.

Together, we have created a Wellness/ Educational three day lash retreat. The retreats will consist of high vibrational foods, lash education, and overall mind, body, soul transformation.

We will be filming our first retreat in July 2018 and a follow up in August 2018, with the first video rolling in early fall. I have a fantastic group of women already onboard and looking to grow this tribe who are on same frequency and speak the same wellness language.

In my own search for answers and help, I now do believe I have found my true happiness to life and success.

The answer is balance.

To be the best version of ourselves we need to take a step back, reflect, and work on healing from within.

At the last Hollywood Lash Conference that year, I observed so many amazing women I personally knew, and thought of those amazing women I know, and went on to notice how many of us are not taking care of ourselves, we are running ourselves ragged, putting ourselves last and just what is that doing? We are running on empty; topping up just to get by........if we did this to a car it would stiffen and rust and eventually give up.

We need to fuel our bodies and minds with the best quality ingredients we can. We need to work smarter instead of harder. We need mindful balance in our life and we can have it all.

Listen to your own body and mind.

Turn off the music, the television, your phone and take some time for you. See what happens…

These past few years I have seen people in my life diagnosed with cancer and other fatal diseases. Life is way too short and if you don’t take time to enjoy it now, when are you ever going to?

Sometimes, the frustration can be so big that people even think of giving up because they think they will never be able to achieve that result.

We should always keep in mind that whilst it's important to know how to correctly apply lashes, we must also listen to our sixth sense. The eyelash extension technique is an art and we should know how to make the most of it to express our own unique style.

Just follow your intuition!

Many top professionals are highly recognised today for their innovation and the authenticity of their work.

A simple example of this is the ‘hybrid’ technique. If you have not yet tried this technique, you would be surprised by the variety of looks that can be created.

Some professionals do not even consider hybrid lashes a technique, but the art of applying extensions shows the creativity of each artist.

In today’s market, we have such a variety of curl, length, thickness, colour and design that we can create really unique looks by listening to our sixth sense.

Don't let your work become routine each person has a different eye shape, so it is up to you, the professional, to use every possible tool to show your potential and meet their expectations.

Allow your sixth sense to speak louder and explore the possibilities for each client individually.

Don’t be afraid to take a risk with styling, I'm sure that you'll be amazed by the result.

Nikki Huebner: This is such an exciting business venture and I believe this type of business model will change the future for the lash industry as a whole.

But first, tell me a little bit about each of you? What’s your beauty industry history?

Derek: Jessi (Lash Common's Chief Marketing Officer) is sincerely all about the people and the community she has been building and serving. Her genuine relationships with her clients, employees, and students, is what I first noticed about her as a business leader.

When we first discussed serving and improving the current lash world, she let me know that giving back is really the centre of her motivation. Jessi wasn’t just about beauty or good business models. She spoke passionately about turning her attention to the need for a shared quality experience for customers, franchisee’s, and industry professionals.

Her incredible brand marketing focus, all while surrounding herself with amazing people shined bright. And the combined 13 years of experience in the makeup and lash world, most definitely helped pave the way for a well- rounded partner.

How do I turn a prospect into a loyal, life-long client? Communication, excellent customer service and taking an interest in your client “CET” up for lashes. This is a helpful method which will open communication with your client and provide some insight into their life.

C = Client profile/release/consultation E = Examine T= Take pictures and Talk

Consultation This form asks certain questions in order to determine if she has any sensitivity issues. On the back, there is a section to write down her design, and expectations. The form explains the lash growth cycle, and aftercare, such as keeping lashes clean. In addition, you may need an extra box to record the patch test. This form is a guideline to follow and can be changed to accommodate your practice. It is informative to the client, allowing them to feel safe and comfortable knowing that you have their best interest in mind.

Previous treatments

Take a picture of your client from the following angles: Eyes closed, eyes open, side view and birds eye view. I have found that using a white gel pad while taking your pictures helps reveal gaps and cowlicks in the lash line, and makes it easier to measure her eyelashes.

This section allows you to get to know your client, and will give you insight on her present and past experience.

If a client has permanent liner you should wait until she has healed.

If she has had previous lash extensions, or lash lift, find out about her experience.

What did they like or dislike? Did they notice any sensitivity? What product was used, and do they know their previous lash map?

Micro needling, Micro dermabrasion, Peels, Botox, and Dysport: Lash extensions can cause sensitivity if applied too soon after these treatments – wait at least two weeks. It is recommended your client does NOT lie flat immediately after injections, nor apply pressure on the area.

Accutane: Wait at least six months after the completion of the medication, as skin is highly sensitive and will easily react, plus the eyes can remain very dry and irritated.

Mixed blepharitis is the combination of both anterior and posterior, and if left untreated, it could result in dry eye.

Laser: Depending on the type of laser used, make sure skin is totally healed as it will be more fragile and sensitive

If we suspect blepharitis, we must advise the client to visit her GP, as we are not medically trained and should not diagnose.

Eye surgery: Eyes must be fully healed, and it is good practice to obtain GP consent, adhesive vapour can affect the healing process.

Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis: Clients suffering from any of these are more prone to sensitivity, and adhesive vapours could cause flair up.

Regular eye test: Recommend your client has a simple eye test if she has not had one in the last three years.

Thyroid conditions: Lashes tend to shed more frequently, which means time between infills will be shorter.

Conditions

Diabetes: Diabetics take longer to heal, may have thinner skin and are likely to be more sensitive.

Sensitive, Watery, or Itchy eyes: This could mean they are not a good candidate for eyelash extensions; examine the lids to see if there is any irritation.

Seasonal allergies: They could demonstrate the symptoms above and the adhesive may cause further symptoms, as the immune system is already on high alert.

Animal allergies: Some clients are sensitive to animals, and even have pets - this can cause more sensitivity to their eyes.

Clients who are prone to sinus infections can be prone to conjunctivitis - make your client aware that blowing their nose and touching their skin can cause infection, it is best not to work on someone with a sinus infection.

Light sensitivity: This could be an underlining problem when securing bottom lashes down. Start off with clients’ eyes closed, slightly but gently open her eye and place the pad on top of her bottom eyelashes. Do not switch your Glamcor on until her eyes are closed.

Dr y eye: Clients usually use prescription eye drops that tend to leave a crust on their lashes, and can affect retention.

Blepharitis: There are several types; anterior blepharitis is where the base of the eyelashes become inf lamed, posterior blepharitis affects the Meibomian gland behind the base of

Claustrophobia: I have found having them hold something in their hand during the service allows them to remain calm, and it is best to work on one eye at a time.

Pregnancy: Is it safe to lash a pregnant woman? You decide after this explanation. When a woman is pregnant, the baby will take all they need from the mother; even if she is taking prenatal vitamins, lash damage can occur.

When she is further along in her pregnancy it is dangerous to lie flat for more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time, as the weight of the uterus compresses the aorta and can risk harming the foetus.

It is important for her to stay hydrated, and increased pressure on the ladder will also leave her needing to visit the bathroom more often.

Discuss this with your client, and let her look forward to having lashes on as soon as she gives birth. It will be a chance for her to be pampered and look more rested and relaxed.

Skins and Eyes: Skin Type can affect lash adhesion and adhesive.

Normal: The skin is normal with no problems. Dry: Skin will be thinner and will have a tendency to be dryer when shampooing lashes. Oily: Skin needs to be cleansed properly and a buildup of oil should be removed from

the lashes or the lash extensions will not stay on. Sensitive: It is advisable to use sensitive adhesive and keep a close eye on the skin during service, in case of developing any sensitivity.

Products containing glycolic acid/ retinol: These products migrate and thin out the skin making the eye area more sensitive, which means clients are more likely to react to the adhesive.

Growth Serums: Tends to increase blood f low causing redness on the skin and means her eyes maybe more sensitive. Ask your client how her eyes are responding to the serum.

Previous product reactions: If someone has reacted, they will always react – even sensitive adhesive contains cyanoacrylate.

Contact lenses: Lenses should always be removed before treatment, and it is a good idea to provide solution and a lens case.

Eye drops: Why are they using eye drops? They may have a prescription, and being treated for glaucoma or even dry eye. Eye drops can affect retention.

Medications: Medication can have a negative effect on the integrity of eyelashes, leading to a swifter loss. In addition, it is important to remember that diet and stress may also play a factor in the health and longevity of lash extensions.

Pay Attention Change occurs on a daily basis. It is important that you carry out a consultation each time they return for treatment.

Has anything changed in their daily routine, or have there been any changes in medication?

While cleansing, have a good look at your client’s skin, take regular pictures, and create a file under their name. If you combine this with a brief note documenting any adjustments or changes made at their appointment, you will set yourself up for success!

How to Prepare for Your First

Lash Competition

What next?

This is a common question from past students - after many months of practice, perfecting skills, patience and confidence building, what are the next steps in the lash journey?

Competitions!

Taking the leap from lashing in your own environment, to lashing in a large competition, can be daunting and frightening. However, I recommend all

eager lash artists take this very step if they want to challenge their talent and abilities.

Lashing behind a closed door doesn’t provide you with feedback or the ability to test your skills.

When a lash artist is ready to improve their timing, their results, and compare against other talents, then a competition is calling their name.

Get Involved So, you have decided to take the plunge – how do you actually take the step towards competing for a title? Two important steps – research competitions and practice your skills for competing. Most lash competitions have a novice or beginner category – requiring 18 months or less experience of classic or volume lashing.

You might be surprised that there are lash competitions in your own country and travelling abroad is not necessary, plus there are reputable online contests all around the world.

Next step is to select the competition for you, determine the level of experience you need, and decided whether you are going for the volume or classic title.

Practice Why would you need to practice if you already lash all day, every day? Lashing in a competition is very different from lashing clients on a daily basis. You might be surprised at the requirements – were you aware that points are deducted for incorrect lash selection and incomplete sets, amongst other strict practices. Once you memorise the rules and point structure of your category it’s time to ask your friends and family to lend you their eyes for practice.

Rules are very strict, for example, some competitions actually state only certain extensions must be used. Others state every single natural lash must be bonded for a top score, plus the correct extension must be placed on the correct natural lash. These are all application skills to practice. Finally, the time for a full set will be stated in the rules so make sure you can achieve a full set in the allotted time. If there are any other rules that stand out to you as different, practice them over and over.

Prepare You are usually asked to bring a few items to the competition. Select a model you already know, with good, easy lashes and perform a few sets before the competition so you know their lash line, and can finesse your shape and style.

Make sure your lash tool kit is well stocked and bring a backup set of tools in case you drop your favourites. Don’t forget plenty of gel pads, stickers, tape, brushes, nano-mister, digital humidity monitor and any other accessories you might need so you can achieve top marks. Try and reduce stress by being over-prepared.

Most adhesives perform differently in different working conditions. I cannot stress this tip highly enough – work with your adhesive in different humidity and temperature levels.

The competition space might be warmer than you normally work with, and humidity levels might be higher or lower than you are familiar with. These variables will have a huge impact on the adhesive and the final results on which you will be judged.

Do not assume that the competition space will have a certain humidity and temperature level just because it is located in the same country or area you live – air conditioning, heating and other factors can affect this. Take the time to practice working in different conditions so you are able to work with the adhesive in the space the competition will be held.

The Results Be proud that you have taken yourself out of your comfort zone and tried your hands at a lash competition. If you didn’t do as well as expected ask for feedback from the judges or your scorecard. Most competitions allow you to see where you missed the points.

Be proud of how far you’ve come- being a skilled lash artist isn’t easy.

International Conference of

Eyebrows & Eyelashes

The Second edition of the International Lash and Brow Conference in Spain took place on June 23, 2018 in Madrid.

It was an event of the great professional value for all the Spanish speaking eye lash professionals world-wide. The famous brands and academies from 13 different countries of Europe and Latin America supported the event. The first issue of Lash Inc. (Spain) magazine was launched during the conference.

Twelve Top Industry Speakers 12 speakers from 9 different countries came to share their professional experiences and latest knowledge with 90 international Spanish speaking participants. The conference was translated simultaneously into Spanish language. Those who could not assist personally had an opportunity to enjoy all the presentations in Spanish in online mode, in a special group created in Facebook. The video record of almost 6 hours of professional presentations is available for those who have missed the event by any reason.

Online Competition The On-line international eye lash contest was held prior to the conference, and the 21 winners were announced at the end of the day.

Every attendee was greeted at the registration desk and given a goodiebag full of presents provided by 12 top brands of the eye lash and brow industry. The VIP sponsors had an opportunity to sell their products during coffee and lunch breaks, as well at the end of the conference.

Entertainment During the breaks the assistants enjoyed live music and were entertained by a comic artist playing games and taking part in funny contests where they were offered to answer some complicated professional questions.

Running your own business is one of the hardest things to do - but having the important things in place such as consultations, terms and conditions etc will help business flow effectively and give you one less thing to think about.

Discuss the procedure and take a booking fee. This cuts down your no-shows and prepares your client for their appointment so they know what to expect

Perform that all-important patch test! Another requirement of your insurance - imagine a reaction the day before a brides wedding! I see some lash artists saying it’s a pain, an inconvenience etc but most clients expect a consultation now.

Make it a condition of treatment!

You will invite confidence from your client in your service, as first impressions really do count! Sit down with your new client, make her a coffee and really get to know what it is she is expecting from her lash service. You are about to spend a few hours on her eyes, start building a rapport with her from the offset!

When you have a good consultation procedure in place - you will be amazed at how your business will flow. There will be less no-shows and more income from serious clients. It also means you are protected if any of your client’s have a reaction, like it was said before - use your consultation time to confirm with your clients everything from style, patch-testing and contraindications.

Win-win for both lash artist and client.

Create your vision

One of my earliest memories was about working life. I asked my Dad if he liked his job and his response was short and to the point, “no-one likes work, Liz.” As a child, the thought of spending every single day in a place that I didn’t like, filled me with dread. Understandably, that interaction is the reason why I’ve spent my career championing better working lives.

No matter how big or small your business is, your staff need to be bought into your vision. What are you aiming for, how will you know when you’ve got there? Remember the cleaner at NASA, when asked what he did, explained that he ‘helped send rockets to the moon.’

Share your dreams and explain the important role that each individual has to play.

As a baby boomer, my Dad’s priority was to work hard and provide for his family; he worked to live. We are now living in an age where individuals look for greater satisfaction in the workplace, a sense of fulfilment, a diverse culture, a good work/life balance, and an organisation that fits with their own values. Motivating staff is not necessarily about the salary, and even in a creative industry, work can become monotonous so being able to motivate your staff is vital for a f lourishing business.

Michelle Barnes, Director of DIG Solutions works with teams to gain greater self-awareness, helping managers to get the best out of their staff depending on their preferred style. Her key message “not good, not bad, just different” emphasises that appreciating the differences in your team helps drive performance, but will also benefit your clients. Whether it’s being accurate and detailed, or creative and artistic, different approaches will still result in a masterpiece.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the small gestures. Taking the time to get to know your staff and remembering what is important to them, can make all the difference.

My Story There was a time when I thought I had it all figured out. I was working a stable job as a pharmacist, and although I was earning a decent wage, I still felt drained bound by financial obligations.

It just didn’t add up - why wasn’t I feeling fulfilled despite having a job that most people would want to have?

Like many others, it would take a few more years of contemplating until one day, i ultimately decided to take the leap and retire at the age of 46. Focusing on my expertise on cosmetics, I became my own boss and a top leader for a direct sales company. By mixing my thirst for life with something I really love to do - plus coverage, determination, and perseverance, I am able to say I am finally living the life I love. However, the question really is..

How Did I Do It? It may seem cliché to just say “follow your dreams” and everything will fall into place. Of course, you have to be realistic. It’s not enough to believe you can do it. You have to be prepared; you need an action plan if you want to change your life. I achieved financial

independence and became a beauty guru in these 5 simple strategies.

1. Make up your mind. You have to decide that you want to do this. Others may say that I had an early retirement, but I wouldn’t have reached my current status if I had listened to naysayers.

You have to give yourself the daily pep talk and focus on your sources of motivation. Not only did I focus on my desire to break from my daily grind at the pharmacy, but I kept my family in mind as well. Once you set your mind to changing your life, proceed to the next step.

2. Change your stripes. Who says it’s too late to do something different or something you love? So what if you didn’t take a business course in college or that you’re an introvert who doesn’t like to socialise? It’s never too late to start pursuing your dream just as it’s never too late to actually learn new skills and step out of your comfort zone. Take your cue from me, i chose cosmetics as my next course and it’s quite a different path from someone who’s been in the pharmaceutical industry for a long time.

The thing is, you don’t have to be scared of change but embrace it.

3. Master your new product or goods.

It’s not enough to just jump ship and let the waters decide your course. You’ve got to take the wheel and learn the ropes. For example, I had to learn about lash serums, mascaras, and a huge bulk of skincare knowledge. Being well-read and knowledgeable in this new field helps me going the extra mile for my customers. She can easily give product recommendations and do virtual makeup consultations too. It’s going to be challenging, but with hard work, it’s all going to be worth it.

4. Learn the trends. What made my efforts pay off was that I knew the correct channel to utilise to gain more followers and spark product interest.

Facebook. Of course, it’s not as simple as posting statuses or links. You have to put in the extra effort and learn how to do FB ads, how to boost posts to get more likes, and track the performance of each post along the way. Currently, I have a strong core team that keeps my numbers high. I actively post in my group and even on my personal profile to make ensure a strong online presence. You may even discover other tools to help you grow your ideas and your followers.

5. Inspire others. Finally, you have to think of a greater cause. I aim to inspire other women and men out there to follow their dreams and live a life worth living. It’s a win-win situation for all; I manage to encourage people to earn extra income whilst promoting self care by means of cosmetics. After all, there is no greater joy than being able to help yourself while you help others.

Owning your own Salon

You’re doing well, fully booked day after day, month after month, great! You suddenly think about that lifelong ambition - owning your very own salon or lash bar. Thinking how great it would be to have your own business, name above your own shop, have a fantastic team of like-minded people making lots of money. Sound familiar?

This is exactly what I did.

Expanding into a salon and having a team isn’t for everyone, and more importantly not everyone has what it takes to do it. It was a childhood dream of mine, of having my own salon. This was something I wanted more than anything in the world something I used to worry might never happen. At the age of 21 I become self employed with a beauty room and then my own salon at the age of 30.

What it takes I moved out of a tiny beauty room and converted a huge 1000sqft space into a luxury boutique spa & lash bar. If you want a salon, read on, and see if you can handle it.

In order for this to work you need to want it so badly that you struggle to sleep, it needs to be a burning desire deep inside.

I never studied business and I didn’t do well at school. Everything I’ve learned about business and the process of getting a salon has been self-taught and finding amazing people in our industry to look up to. Inspire to be like one day.

That is one of the most important things, find people you massively admire that have done well.

Putting in the ground work Nothing happens overnight, all success takes time to build and grow. You need to be busy with clients, Some will open a salon or lash bar when they are just starting out and it can be done, but it’s a lot harder. Love your clients, they

are the ones who are supporting you financially and allowing you to grow your business and do what you love, without them you’re nothing. You have to go above and beyond for them, they can always go somewhere else.

You need to build a loyal clientele I was fully booked every day of the week for 3 years before I took the plunge because once you have a salon the bills are thick and you need to have cash in the bank to survive.

Depending on the location and size of the building will determine how much start up cash you will need. Get yourself a great solicitor one that takes no rubbish you will need their negotiating powers, make sure you read your lease and you fully understand every single word. You’re signing this, not your solicitor.

Don’t get caught out Before you sign anything get lots of builder’s quotes for exactly what you want. You don’t want to get the shop only to find you can’t afford the building work. Builders costs vary hugely; it might cost a few thousand or 50 thousand I got about 15 quotes ranging from 19K to 100K so it really varies. It completely depends on the size of the shop and what you want doing to it.

Small shops will cost a lot less.

I signed a lease agreement which was done so if the planning permission was granted the lease would automatically come into force. But if planning was denied everything would fall through!

This could cost but its cheaper than not having it in place.

Now the work really starts I remember getting a text when I was at work, seeing my phone light up with a message from the estate agents saying the shop was mine! I almost passed out with excitement. Then the work started - its full steam ahead, getting the builders in, picking out paint samples, asking anyone who is free to babysit the empty shop all day because your waiting for flooring, and couches to be delivered its really full on and exciting.

We finished at midnight the night before we opened and were just about ready for the launch party the next day. Invites were sent out, clients were coming, balloons on the door and drinks poured.

One Year On I’ve fired as many staff as I now have.

You have to start as you mean to go on, if people pull you down, remove them.

I’ve had amazing days, stressful days.

Got granted a restraining order against a stalker, yes we has one! Had burst pipes, floods, and leaks but still always a big smile because you can’t let anyone see your stressful days.

Clients who have known you for years say how proud they are and how the business is doing so well. It suddenly dawns on you that you did it. It’s getting fully booked every day, 5* reviews from every client we see. That’s when it hits you! You survived! All the things you were worried might happen, didn’t.

Have your vision, be determined, don’t put barriers in your way, never say I can’t do this, and make a plan.

Who knows one day my business might become a franchise!

There are a number of reasons we chose this account as one of our favourites for this issue, and we are sure you can see why too! When it comes to a lash account, you obviously need to ensure you are selling your main product lashes. Here you can see exactly what this account is selling, and she’s doing it perfectly.

Meet Kim! The moment you look at this Instagram account you can see simplicity in the content she posts and oozes sophistication! Don’t be alarmed, you do not have to jump onto the black and white bandwagon but it’s all about the end look. The end look of your instragram account needs to be clean and easy to naviagate - no mismatching colours and no clashing prints!

She has also included both video as well as images. This is important for you potential and current clients to see the final look but a lot of people react better to videos so it’s always good to upload videos now and then!

Another bonus that we love about this Instagram account is the way she has made sure all the images blend together, as you can see they all have the same hue of colour. A very soft pale pink colour, event the skin texture with the filter she has used blends perfectly with the quote pictures.

Another reason why we love this account is the different types of content she has used to get more clients and followers - for example, she’s got perfect images of her lash work which is something you always need to have!

She also includes lifestyle pictures that match with her colour theme as you can see the black Macbook image and the Glamcour image as well as the different curls image. All of which help attract new clients and followers but blend into the look that she is trying

to achieve on her account. Breaking up your instagram account with this type of content instead of just a timeline of lashes, keeps your account interesting and not just another lash page that bores your clients.

Also take note of how she photographs her lash images, she has decided to stick to one position that suits the rest of her page and also shows off her talent - remember to always take photos straight and not sideways!

@groziokultas Let’s take a look at a different type of Lash Instagram account now, you may be aware of this account as they were our front cover for the last issue and they are an academy. You can probably see the difference with the accounts as they have images that are more relevant for students instead of clients. For example, images of their students with certificates and photoshoot promotion images.

We love this account as much as we love the name! If you take a look at the account you can instantly see how clever they are with how they post the content. Let’s take the three bottom images of the tweezer and palette, the photography here is perfect for instagram and the way they have posted all three that are slightly different, but still telling the same story is such a insta grabbing thing!

Some award bodies may ask for customer nominations as part of your entry. It may be just a small part of the application but it’s still very important as the little things can mean a lot to the awards organisers.

Do you know customers, suppliers and partners who have said something wonderful about your business or are willing to commit something in writing for your entry? Customer testimonials should be easy to get as customers love to say something nice about something they love. It’s probably not something they will get asked to do so very often!

It’s best to try and keep things simple.

For example you can have nomination details at your point of sale or reception desk. Post a link on your blog, Facebook page and send to any newsletter subscribers you may have.

Do you have a mailing list already? If not it’s a good idea to create one so you can keep your customers up-to-date on everything that’s happening in your business, including your award entries.
