Our Senior Journalists :
Yes, we hope you love this Issue as much as we do, We have all put so much into it for you all to love. These articles you read, are from real business owners in the lash industry, hoping to use their experience to help you think about things you wouldn't even think about!
We currently have four brilliant Senior Journalists who for the last four issues have been providing you all with articles filled with so much knowledge.
As you can see, our Front Cover is a gorgeous photo of Akemi Osuga, who is the face of Issue 5. You can read all about her and her Japan Lash brand on Page 5.
The Lash Community : Issue 5 is all about community, we have some great articles & stories of those in the industry on why community is a big part of our careers. It's very easy to find other lash artists or salon owners as a competitor, but it was the great Helen Keller that once said "Alone, we can do so little. Together we can do so much." She's right. You would be surprised what flourishes when people join forces, rather than spend precious time on thinking of what the 'competitor' is doing. Updates: We are super excited to Welcome a new Senior Journalist to our already amazing team at Lash Inc UK! Britta Krueger, from Flirties; will be joining us, and we are looking forward to everything she has in store for us and all the knowledge she is about to share!
Thinking ahead, with Issue 6, We have some very exciting things in store for you! It's going to be BIG! If you do ever want to be featured, or published get in contact with our team and we will always try our best to include as much as we can. Have a fabulous 2019, here's to the ever growing Lash Industry! Lots of Love,

Akemi Osuga
Meet Akemi Osuga, founder of Perfect Lash Japan and this issue's front cover. Akemi is well recognized as an Eyelash Trainer in Japan.
Being the front cover of Lash Inc is just one of Akemi's proud moments. She is also an award winner, after winning 3D-4D Division in London Lash Battle in 2017, she became captivated with both competitions and conferences held in Europe. After much thought, she decided that bringing something similiar into Japan with events, that it would motivate and up the skills and knowledge of the Japanese Eyelash Artists.
Eyelash World Cup
Bringing her vision to life, Akemi launched her first Eyelash World Cup in 2018, and again for the second time round a few weeks ago on February 12th 2019. The first Eyelash World Cup 's conference was held on January 19 2018, with 100 tickets sold out in the first five days of it's launch! This proved to Akemi, just how much Japan needed this style of events. The third event is planned for February 25th, 2020!

by Sarah Humphreyson Lash Inc UK. Senior Journalist Eyelash Queen
Seeing as though we are following the theme of "community" in the lash industry in this issue, I thought I'd talk about our competition as lash artists. With the prevalence of social media ever present in our everyday lives, it is becoming more and more difficult not to take notice of what our competitors are up to, and "copying" is rife. If this has happened to you, you'll understand how frustrating it is. But try to take it as a compliment. You are doing great to have people copying!
Remember, they are not you, their customers are not your customers, their brand is not your brand. Copying of marketing tactics without the intent of you and your brand will not work. It’s not the competition that kills most businesses -- it’s the inability of some leaders to put on blinkers and block out all of the outside noise. Competition fuels us to think faster, act more intelligently and challenge our ideas. It makes us smarter, fiercer and more successful. Often, competition
can be healthy as it stops you falling into the complacency trap and forces you to stay sharp – building a stronger, more resilient business in the long term. If you come up with a great idea, business name, logo, product etc. Then you need to make sure it is trademarked/ patented. You have to protect your business and then be prepared to take legal action if any plagiarism occurs. Use your time to take marketing courses, write great copy, get to know your customers and target audience and what they want from you - then deliver it!
Get your ducks in row.
Make sure everything is slick and professional. Matching brand colours and fonts, logos. Have terms and conditions and company policies in place and follow through with them. Have a social media strategy and a plan
“ Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”
- Oscar Wilde
7 - Lashes
for business growth. If you are doing all of these things plus servicing your clients and dealing with the day to day you wont have time to worry about what everyone else is doing! It can drive you mad or it can drive you on. It’s your choice. You, and only you get to control how something or someone makes you feel and act. You will let a copycat affect your business negatively just by allowing yourself to get wound up - stop wasting your time! My absolute favourite quote: "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde
Be Careful.
Karma ALWAYS comes around. If you don't want people to steal or copy from you then don't do it yourself. It will most definitely come back to you, as it will to them. Don't look over your garden fence at the neighbours sunflowers, or yours will die from lack of attention. Use the energy you spend stalking social media on your own business and growth. Remember, you will get out what you put in!

Are You Ready, To Take Your
Side Hustle Into A Full Time Business?
by Signe Langeberg Lash Inc UK. Senior Journalist Golden Experts It’s always best to have a full time job when you’re just starting out with lashes. This is what I always recommend and there’s so many reasons for it but the first and most important one is the lack of skills. You need to be able to do safe eyelash extensions and offer a quality that is acceptable in the industry and for your clients before you can start asking enough money for your services that would benefit you. And you can spend your nights and weekends practicing all different aspects of this art before you start stressing over the business side of things.
The first thing you need is to overcome the fear of not knowing. Because you don’t know how or if it’s going to work out for you but you will never find out either if you don’t take the leap! We've all been there! Ask any business owner and they will tell you that it may have been the most scariest thing they had to decide when they first started out. Overcoming fear is easy if you are at a point when it hurts to work full time because you are saying “No” on a daily basis to potential clients who you can’t take because of the time. But it is also crucial to plan. Because if you don’t plan - you are planning to fail! So what should be your steps? There are so many things you will have to consider and a whole lot of personal things that you will need to figure out but here are my tips to help it make it easier for you.
1. Start with a date!
Decide when you need to quit your full part time job and your business needs to provide you with enough income. Leave yourself enough time to make sure your skills are on point, that you
9 - Lashes
have enough time to save up and market to get more clients. And get excited! Once you put down the date, write it in your calendar and be proud of yourself! You’ve just made the biggest decision to take absolute control over your financial future.
2. Save up!
Especially if you have financial responsibilities which need to be covered regardless. When I went full time I made sure I had enough money to cover my salons rent for 3 weeks which I don’t recommend but it worked out for me.
You should have at least 3 months worth of savings on your account to cover your living and business expenses. And be ready to give up things that you don’t need but enjoyed spending money on. It will be a sacrifice but it will be worth it by the end.
3. Go All In..
On Marketing! Create a buzz around your business before you go full time. Think how can you utilise your current clients to bring in their friends and how to get new clients coming in
immediately. Put it on a paper and brainstorm every idea that you have. Your marketing should be like a tap that you can turn off and on whenever you need to. Put it into a plan and get as detailed as possible on the promotions you will do online and in salon.
4. The Best Time
To go 'all in' is spring because summer is the highest season when you will get new clients with the least effort. Don’t go full time in winter or autumn when it will be harder to motivate new people to come to your business. I don’t believe that at a certain time in a year people just stop having lashes because it’s not true, but I do believe that during Christmas and summer time, it is cheaper and easier to advertise to new people.
5.Plan For Business
Your
Write down a vision of the purpose why are you in the business, what do you want to get out of it, what are you helping your clients with, how you like them to feel when they leave your studio, what hours will you be working and so on. Get really clear on everything to the last detail and start creating it. If you don’t know the answer to all of those questions, take yourself for a coffee or a holiday to get inspired. I try to go away every month either abroad or even just in a different city where i don’t have any distractions and i just dream about my business and write down what we will be working on the next month.
6.Learn Your Numbers!
I know it’s easy to charge half the price of what your competitor charges when you are doing lashes only as a side hustle, but you have to be able to cover your bills, earn a good salary for yourself and stay profitable. Do not compare your prices with a competitor. They are running their business and you have no idea what expenses they have or how they do things. Look at yourself. What do you want to provide your clients with, how much do you need to earn and how much would you like to earn for yourself by the end of the day. Write all the numbers down and also include your operating expenses: rent, utilities, marketing expenses, booking systems, products – literally everything. And only then calculate what your prices need to be to cover all of it. I’ve practiced this continuously for years. I have no idea what my competitors are charging or doing because all my focus is on my clients and what can I do to help them.
7. 7.And Last But Not Least... If you are not ready to put 200% of your effort and time into this, then don’t do it. You will be stressed, scared, working 7 days a week 24h a day, lose touch with your friends and have sleepless nights in the beginning. It will take longer time and much more effort than you thought it will. And it’s absolutely fine if it’s not for you. It could be just worth looking for a job where you can do only lashes and still have a stable income without any of other stress and fuzz around it and still be extremely fulfilled career wise. If you do decide to go down the business ownership road then check out our group on Facebook eyelash extensions tips & advice where we share business help as well.

How I Did It
Reader Experience:
"When training in lashes I never released that I would have found my sole purpose in life. Many people go through life not knowing what they want to do and I was one of those people! I worked in office job after office job searching for happiness not realising that the only thing that would make me happy is by doing something I love. I worked full time and did clients on evenings and weekends for 3 years until I found myself at a job that no longer served me. A place where I was miserable and made the decision to cut down my hours until I got to the point where i was turning clients away because i was working part time doing a job that i was not happy doing. I was so happy to have regular clients that loved my work. So i decided to hand in my resignation, which ended up being one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only did I find something I am good at, I get to make women feel happy and confident! I am now the owner of my own salon Lash City London and a Lash Trainer for the UK Lash Institute and although I worked many hours to get where I am and took many risks. I would not change it for the world. Like they say... nothing worth having comes easy!" - Zey Ozbayir [@Lashcitylondon]
" Six years ago I took my first ever lash course looking at working off time around my young children as I thought I couldn’t work full time. With more courses taken my client base grew and i could see a huge increase in my earnings, far more then what I had earned in my 9-5 Monday - Friday office job. I now have a really successful full time client base in two areas as well as my role of Head Educator for the UK Lash Institute. I am so pleased to have found a job that I love, and one that I can work full time and still be around for my children." - Donna May [@mayd_beautiful]
" I started out as a manicurist in 2000. As a manicurist I realized that it was an fast pace environment. In 2008 I learned to do eyelash extensions, I became interested in eyelash extensions so I went and took a class. At the time, there wasn’t a lot of information so for 3 years I was doing both eyelash extensions and working as a manicurist. In 2011, I felt like lashes wasn’t my biggest strength so I took another class and fell in love with doing lashes. I got into lashes from having better training classes. I loved the effect after doing lashes and seeing my clients reactions. It’s what I love about my job and the fact that I find it so peaceful. Over the years, with more training classes- I was able to become an official Educator in an industry that I love!" - Jaslynn Le [@Jas_Lash_Brows]
" I was working evenings and weekends along with my full time job, but I hated my full time job and realised it was getting in the way of lashing. I was so scared when I left, but I then got a part time job at an airport which the hours were quite handy because I’d work in the early hours of the morning, and be home by 9am and I also had days off in the week and could open lash appointments in the day and people started taking them! Then I realised that after a few months of working 3am until 7am at the airport then lashing from 9am until 10pm and tiring myself out that I didn’t need the airport job anymore and could just get another client in and it would cover the money I’d get that morning at the airport. So you could say I did it gradually full time to part time then to self employment, it was scary but Miranda Tarpey had always said when I was at my full time job that if I took the leap I would work hard to make it work in self employment and she was right! When I left the airport I decided I didn’t want to Lash on the weekends as I was working until 10pm in the week, so I’d do Mon, Weds and Fri - 9am until 7pm and Tues and Thurs are my late nights. It’s tiring but I love lashing! And I’ve recently now been able to cut down to working only 4 days a week now to concentrate on a Microblading course I’ve recently done and opening my salon! You have to believe in yourself and make it work! Claudia Johnson [@Crjbeautyx]

What Customers Have Said:
My daughter has been my tester for Speedy Bond. For the past two years she has experienced really bad, horrible reactions. A few months ago she wanted to have her lashes for holiday, however with her medical condition, I had only started placing a few lashes until @uklashinstitute she begged me to stop as she suffered straight away. As soon as we had Speedy Bond in for testing, we tested it out on her. And we have been lashing her ever since, nothing happened! No pain, no bruising, no swelling, no itching.. just beautiful lashes. Her eyes would be bloodshot, but they are now clear and white! The product is truly amazing. I am in love with it, and it is a must have product for your lash stations.

We use so many products in our business - adhesives, primers, removers, cleansers, tints, wax etc. But do you know what ingredients are in those products? Are they safe to use? Are they legal in your country? How can we find out this information? Every chemical product that we use should have a safety data sheet (SDS sheet). This document is split up into 16 different sections, giving you lots of valuable information about the product
Section 1. Identification includes product identifier; manufacturer or distributor name, address, phone number; emergency phone number; recommended use; restrictions on use.
Section 2. Hazard(s) identification includes all hazards regarding the chemical; required label elements.
Section 6. Accidental release measures lists emergency procedures; protective equipment; proper methods of containment and clean up.
Section 7. Handling and storage lists precautions for safe handling & storage, including incompatibilities.
Stability & reactivity lists chemical stability & possibility of hazardous reactions.

with vital information in case of an emergency. It’s important to note that every chemical product should have an SDS sheet that your supplier is responsible for providing. Whether that’s the manufacturer, an importer or distributor. We can see that in section 3 you will be given a list of ingredients in the product. It’s in your client's best interests to pay particular attention to this part of the document. If they experience an allergic reaction and need to go to the hospital, then the doctor may need to know the list of ingredients so it’s always best to have all your SDS sheets altogether in a folder for easy access. You will also have information of how to safely store your products, how to dispose of them and what to do should you spill any chemicals etc. By law, suppliers of chemicals must provide an up-to-date SDS if they are classed as dangerous. In section 11 the toxicology information of the product is provided. Important for your own health, it tells you any risks that you may be exposed to when using the product. The acute toxicity gives an indication of the kind of quantities of the chemical which may cause immediate damage to health if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. You’ll also be able to find out if the product has been tested on animals within this section. If this is the case, within the text you will see something
similar to: LD50 (oral, rat) 5mg/kg. The letters LD stand for Lethal Dose and 50 refers to a percentage. In this instance the lethal dose was given orally to a rat. The 5 mg/kg means that 5 milligrams for every 1 kilogram body weight of the rat, when administered by mouth, caused the death of 50% of the test subjects. Old SDS sheets might contain this information even if the product is no longer tested on animals, but may have been in the past. It’s always best to check with your manufacturers so you can be certain. In the UK there has been a de facto ban on the testing of cosmetic ingredients since 1998 and since 1999 a ban on the acute oral Lethal Dose 50% (LD50) test save in exceptional circumstances. As of March 2013, the sale of cosmetics whose ingredients have been tested on animals has also been banned across the European Union. However, with products like eyelash adhesive some are not classed as cosmetic and therefore the laws would not apply to this. Hopefully in the future, all eyelash adhesives will be classed as cosmetic and therefore not be allowed to be tested on animals. I have also seen companies that have falsified their SDS sheets and some that have incorrect information. For example, I had a bottle of a well know adhesive sent to the lab for testing. The amount of hydroquinone stated on the SDS was less than was actually in there. Now I realise this was just one bottle and it could have been a one-off, but the
Always use reputable brands and always request SDS sheets to keep on file. If you are buying a product where you are not familiar with the brand then make sure you have a good read of the document beforehand. It’s not uncommon for me to see companies claiming ‘our product is full of natural ingredients’ ‘our product is vegan’ or ‘our product is made from the highest quality ingredients’, with one look at their SDS sheets showing otherwise. Some brands will have the vegan society logo on their website which may automatically make you think that all their products are vegan. This may not be the case, as the vegan society say that you can still register with them even if you sell non vegan products. Therefore, it’s good practice to be clued up on each individual product you’re using to ensure you’re giving out the correct information to consumers and clients. Many companies think we will not bother to read the ingredients or request the SDS sheets, and a large majority actually don’t. Make that change today. Make sure you know your products, make sure you know their ingredients, make sure you have the SDS sheet. Question things you’re not sure about. Finally, make sure that you and your clients are safe and that you feel confident in the knowledge that you have done all you can to ensure all your products are safe and legal.

Tips On Entering
Competitions
by Miranda Tarpey
Editor, Lash Inc. UK CEO, UK Lash Institute
There are so many amazing competitions nowadays, online and live, with many different categories to choose from, and new categories popping up all the time, I just Love them. Entering a competition for the first time can be quite daunting, so here’s a few of my tips to set you on your journey.
Online If your entering an online What's A Bad competition for the first time, you may think its the easiest option to choose as Choice? Any model that has any your in your own environment and can submit at your leisure the photos, yes all true however just be aware of the following:
How Long Should You Spend On A Set? With online competitions, you have no idea how long your competitor will take on a set of lashes to make them PERFECT, with a live completion you are on the same times,at live comps you all have exactly the same start and finish for your sets, but online, if someone wants to win they may spend HOURS perfecting a set, i have heard some competition spending close to 8 hours on a set for online competitions to ensure pure flawless lashes.
Who Should I Choose As My Model? Choose your model WISELY, don't just choose your best friend or mum/ daughter because its convenient and they are happy for you to practice on them, if they are not a good choice then don't use if you want to win!.
15 - Lashes
eye shape that needs correctional work. Here are some examples: Hooded Eyes/hooded skin around the eyes, will give you more work to ensure that your lashes on both eyes are symmetrical, hooded eyes can be unbalanced, one has more of a hood than others, so your mapping needs to alter from eye to eye - why give yourself this extra problem when you can choose a model that does not need correctional work. Down-turned eyes, lashing a model that has down-turned eyes incorrectly may result in her eyes looking aesthetically less attractive to the judges. remember you want to WOO the judges with your work not pull their attention and highlight your models flaw! So your model is the first crucial of winning your online competition, choose a model that has no obvious f laws around her eyes, i would personally choose a model that is also quite young preferably under 35 years old, so no grandmas - sorry!

they will always look at the whole image, we all do, we look at the person first before zooming in to those lashes, so choose a youngish person, that has no down-turned eyes or uneven eye, no hoods, no flaws around the eyes. Choose a model that has a great spark in her eyes, if your model also has a beautiful colour of eyes, great use her!
Choose a model that has great eyebrows, as this will look more attractive as a whole and will compliment your lash sets. Remember this is a competition choose a model that will set off your lashes beautifully, she is your showcase, so choose her to be attractive, with a perfectly symmetrical face, yes you can of course use your friend but any flaws that you have not corrected perfectly may cost you the winning place, SO if you want to WIN then choosy carefully and wisely, so your model will set off your beautiful lashes that everyone will want.
What Styling Should I Choose? OK, so you now have your perfect model with her beautiful face, decision time with styling, i would say stay away from the messy look (unless that’s the category your going for) stay away from the cat
eye, or similar, as your model will have gorgeous eye shape like almond, then just choose a classic natural style, BUT do maps for position of lengths in the correct place. Keep the style simple and natural to compliment your model.
What Lengths?
About
Right : Judging at Tokyo's Lash Competition 2018!
•
Check the criteria carefully, and ensure you've taken photos to show the judges that will be marking and going through the criteria good clear photos that are easy to see and judge.
•
When you've taken some photos of your model and lashes, I would then give your model a drink and food, while you carefully go through the photos, if you spot any lashes that are out of place or not perfect, put her back on that couch and remove and amend, don't get lazy here, i know you've probably been lashing for hours and are tired BUT don't do some quick snaps and let your model leave DON'T DO IT! Have a break with her and carefully check those shots. Take away any lashes that are not perfect and replace and take the photo again, common you want to WIN!!
I personally love a shorter set of lashes, and with competitions i would say please don't go long! use same length as your models naturals or plus 1mm as the norm. Do use very shorter lashes like 5mm,6mm for those inners though, again remember it is a Competition , show the judges your skills.
What Photos Shall I Submit? So you've created
your beautiful lashes and spent hours perfecting them, now the hard part, getting across through the photo the wonderful lashes that your proud of. Sometimes its really hard to show your lashes at their best through photos, because an image picks up every flaw that you haven't spotted when she's opened her eyes, but that lens picks up EVERYTHING!
So here are my tips: • Start with GOOD Lighting, ensure that there are no shadows on one side of the face, this is something I've seen many times as a judge, and its so upsetting to see great lashes on one eye but cannot see the other eye clearly to be able to give good top marks, if we can't see it, we can't mark it, however beautiful your lashes may look. •
Let us see the whole face straight on, again I've seen many photos that have been sent in at an angle shot, great for advertising but not so good for judging. if we are judging for example, SYMMETRY but cannot see both eyes clearly to mark your lash symmetry, you probably will not get top marks because we cannot see if the lashes are symmetrical. If the criteria is marking symmetry , send a clear photo of your model sitting up, with eyes open and facing the camera.
•
Of course it goes without saying that you do not send any photos that are blurred or not clear, do not send photos that the lashes have been photo-shopped, do not send photos with watermarks or your name or logo, most of the online competitions are judged blindly , which means that your photos that have any name etc.. on them will either be cropped to disguise the name or not sent over to the judges!
Do You Want To Give Fantasy A Go? With so many online fantasy competitions it is tempting to give this creative side a go, after all what do you have to lose?
So i want to give you a few pointers in this area, especially if its your first time entering. As above choose your model wisely, if your model is attractive then she will be showcasing your work at its very best. I see so many amazing fantasy images when I'm judging and I always feel its such a shame that they will never win because of one crucial area that lets
them down! You've spent hours of your time with the costume, the body art, the makeup , the hair , the hair piece and the whole image looks so magical that you think "I'm going to win" only to find that you didn't and are a little upset that all this effort was put in but you didn't even place, so what’s gone wrong?
The LASHES , remember it is a fantasy LASH competition, so your lashes also need to be THEATRICAL, think BIG & LONG, this is the only time that you can go super long, like 20mm so the judges can see them without trying to zoom in to see a flicker of colour. we want to see those fantasy lashes, use colours, then dress the lashes with art, don't just add a few feathers or gems, this is old hat, judges want to see something new to excite them. If i were dong fantasy , i would give my model a mega set of lashes in strong colours to stand out, then i would prepare some strip lashes that i would lash longer lengths even taking them up to 20mm on the outers to really stand out, then i would put them onto of my models own lashes and start dressing these with decorations or elements . Do read the criteria thoroughly too. If you need any help, I'm always happy to help if I can! Good Luck!

Community by Ravi Sagoo
Collectives
Community is the focal point for this quarter’s magazine, and in the short time I have been part of the Lash Industry, I have already witnessed at first hand a collective of people from all around the world offering welcoming and open spaces. Such support allows one many a platform to help us achieve business, career and personal goals. As a ‘lash newbie’ the love and support I’ve had from the Lash Industry, alongside other industries, for collaborative work and simply connecting with one another, has inspired me and boosted my confidence in the work I do both in the Lash Industry and in my daily working life in the Media. We all need help in life, and thankfully we now live in a time where can share our feelings more openly, from our fears and anxieties to our joyous and celebratory achievements – both online and offline. All of which are supported through our personal networks of friends and family, social media spaces, complete strangers (sometimes) to professionals with expertise in coaching and counselling.
Our personal, physical and emotional health, alongside caring for ourselves and each other is beyond any monetary or materialistic gain on a personal level. The 24-Hour Lash Conference which took place in October 2018 in support of UK Lash Institutes Gabriella Garardi was a true reflection of love, support and a global community coming together to not only help Gabriella but also to raise awareness and funding for Multiple Sclerosis.
Recovering with Gabs and Andi the morning after Super Yacht Lash Conference 2018, hence the bottle of water!
To all who contributed with their time, talent, subscribing and donations; a heartfelt thank you. The love and support for Gabriella was very inspiring. I’ve only known ‘Gabs’ less than a year, having first met her at the Lash Events UK Conference in May for the very first time as I hosted the event on the Super Yacht. We connected straight away on a work level, from her attention to detail and events producer skill set, to her fun and loving persona where the ‘chats n bants’ were a plenty! We’ve continued our friendship and keep in touch regularly with me teaching her ‘Scottish’ as she calls it! Or me sending her ‘ABC’ spelling books as she got her ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘D’s mixed up for quiz question answers! Gabriella, I wish you the very best of health for the 2019 and beyond, and I look forward to working with you at the Super Yacht Lash Conference in May 2019.

Nine Common Mistakes
Beginner Lash Artists tend to make. by Hanna Putjato
Lash Inc. Senior Journalist CEO, London Lash Pro
1 ) Using too much or too little adhesive If you have been wondering why your clients lashes are not lasting as long as they should be, it is probably because of the amount of glue you’re using during the treatment. We recommend not swiping the lash into your adhesive. This will create a film of adhesive on the extension that will dry before it gets a good grip on the lash! Instead, try and scoop the glue. You just want the tiniest ball of glue on the lash not a big blob and scooping will assist in the control of the glue amount. Top Tip - If you get too much glue on your lash, scoop slower! If you scoop the lash out too fast, you will notice straight away that there is too much glue.
2 ) Taking too much time to isolate the “Perfect Lash” Have you ever noticed you spent quite a bit of time just trying to isolate one lash? Well, this is actually very common. A lot of new lash artists look for an ideal natural lash to apply the extension on too. However, remember that EVERY lash needs an extension applying to it by the end of the treatment so it really doesn't matter which lash you choose to do first. Trying to find the perfect lash will just slow down your appointment schedule! Top Tip - If you isolate the difficult 'baby lashes’ first and get them out of the way, you will only have the easy lashes left to do at the end of your appointment!
4 ) Not following the correct pre-treatment It is SO important to follow the correct pre-treatment before you begin your eyelash application. You need to ensure that your client has absolutely no makeup, dust or grime on her lashes. You can use lash shampoo or my personal recommendation, the London Lash cleanser & protein remover pads to clean the lashes. For best results remember to always follow up with cleanser and primer. Also remember a correct pre-treatment isn’t just for fresh sets. Make sure you have a thorough pre-treatment when doing infill’s also. You can use microfibre brushes to get the roots of the lash squeaky clean. Top Tip: Ask your clients to come without makeup on treatment day. At the very least NO mascara! I don’t know if any of you have ever tried to remove waterproof mascara, but it is a pain! You can only use oil based makeup remover to get rid and this is just wasting valuable lash time.
3 ) Incorrect styling It is SO important that you know how to correctly style eyelashes. You need to be able to determine which length, thickness and curl will be appropriate for your client. Take into consideration things such: - Natural lash growth direction - Clients facial bone structure - - Clients eye shape - Distance of the eyes For example, most clients want the “Cat Eye” look, but only a very small handful of people actually have the correct eye shape to pull off this look. Most looks require mixing at least TWO different curls, this way they will blend better
25 - Lashes
and look more natural. If the extensions are too thick or the fans are too big, the lash set will NOT be suitable for long term wear and will seriously damage the natural lash of your client as it can not handle the weight. Keep these sets for special occasions & competitions ONLY.
5 ) Distance from the lid Getting the correct distance from the lid is very tricky! It requires a lot of experience and practice to get it perfect! They can either be too close to the lid or too far off! However, both are bad. If you get the lash too close to the lid it will be extremely uncomfortable or even painful for your client! The lash and the adhesive will irritate their skin. Sticking the lash too far from the lid, is not as bad as getting it to close, HOWEVER it will eventually grow much quicker than the other lashes and will be too heavy for the root of the natural lash. It will also cause the
lash set to look very messy and could cause the extensions to twist. The ideal distance is between 0.5-1mm from the lid. However this depends on your experience. But remember it is better keep it further away than too close!
6 ) Stickies Stickies are the single most important thing to watch out for when applying lashes. The reason it is so so important to check your work for stickies is because they are extremely damaging to the natural lashes!! The first step to prevent stickies is to correctly isolate the lash. Checking your work for stickies is as important a part of your lash procedure as applying eyepatches - it’s all about safety! Always ensure you save 10 minutes at the end of a treatment in order to do this thoroughly and correctly. The first way you can check for stickies is to check each individual lash from root to tip with your tweezers, not forgetting to check every natural lash to ensure that any baby lashes are not stuck anywhere. Secondly you will need to check layers, because lashes don’t grow in just one row - you are almost guaranteed to find at least one stickie between the layers! For more information on stickies check out our London Lash online blog!
7) Not using a map Even the most experienced lash artists ALWAYS use a lash map - it doesn’t add much time to the treatment but has a major effect on overall look! Symmetry is the absolute key when doing lashes and without a map it will be extremely difficult to remember which lash you used where.
on the TIPS of the extensions, the overall look will appear very messy. The curlier the extensions, the more important it is (and more difficult to keep an eye on) Top Tip: Use a small mirror to check the directions of the tips throughout the treatment.
When you start working with layers you will know that you need to put a longer lash on the bottom layers and a shorter lash on the top! This is so that when your client opens their eyes, they will have that beautiful & perfect lash look! The client “wow" moment that is why Lash Technicians do what they do! Mapping is essential for this! Top Tip: Start the mapping when your client has their eyes open, use an eye liner/brow pencil to mark off the middle of the eye (where the iris is) on the eyelid. When clients eyes are shut, it makes it very tricky to determine where the middle of their eye is.
8 ) Bad Lash Direction This is one of the most common mistakes for beginner lash artists. There are 2 types of directions: - The base direction, we usually like to follow what is called a “sunrise” (as shown in image) this helps you remember which direction the lashes should always go. Just think of the beams coming off the sun! You want the inner and outer corner lashes to fan outwards, not head straight!
9 ) Not placing eyepatches correctly Eye-patches! I remember placing my first patches…It can feel daunting and scary but is the base of a good set of lashes. If the eye-patches are placed incorrectly it will be very uncomfortable for your client! It will also lift up the inner corner lashes, resulting in wrong distance and an overall messy look when your client opens their eyes. The eye-patches should NEVER be touching the waterline. This will also be very uncomfortable for your client and could lead to chemical burn, or even more serious. It could lead to bruising on the eyes...ouch. Top Tip: Use London Lash extra sensitive eye-patches! They are more f lexible and more comfortable for your clients. They are also less likely to lift the inner corners up! When placing the patches, always start from the inner corners and move outwards. This way you will have more control over the placement of the patches.
- The next type of direction is the tip direction - even if you fan the extensions out perfectly but are not keeping an eye

Pre Mades or
Pre Jades!
by Jade Jones
Founder of Jade Jones Berkshire, Jade Jones has been in the industry for 5 years and is based in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Her team has grown from 1 to 4 in the space of 12 months. She is one of the first educators taken on by Bryony Archer for Lash Artistry and Education (LAE) and Jade recently won Lash Artist of the Year 2018 in the Classic Category, the Male Classic Category and Mega Volume Category. With her in depth knowledge around the theory of Russian Volume, Jade took on a personal challenge. After using premade fans for several years (never above a 3d due to the bases), Jade thought she would do some research to change the perception within the industry on bulky pre-made fans. Beautiful bases must exist, right? Jade has tested lashes from many suppliers all over the world and finally settled on a range that works perfectly for her clients and hopefully yours too - PreJades. Jade is most proud of her mix dimension trays which are not currently available anywhere else in the market place. The
mix dimension trays include 3d fans, 4d fans and 5d fans so you can use 1 tray within a set and ensure you are applying the correct weight on those smaller inner/outer lashes. Every order comes with a PreJades guide to help you create your perfect set.

Travelling The World
For Lashes
by Birute Putvinskas
Be Dazzle Inc/ Perfect Lashes People say: “ To become the best at what you do, you need to learn from the best in the industry” and in my case, I say: “Everything starts from a WISH..”. So, when 3 years ago I decided to leave my job in logistics, that I was successful at for last 10 years, and start from zero in lash industry , I knew that to achieve what I want, I have to learn the correct way so I could become one of the best - just like people I learn from. ONLY A NUMBER OF MILES The distance is only a number of miles or flight hours to get you to the right educator and I knew I was willing to travel. My first trip was to Lithuania, where I am originally from, and there I learned the correct and safe way to apply lash extensions. I should mention that up to that point I have never even tried to apply the
35 - Lashes
extension on the natural lash nor had I ever held the tweezers in my hands. So, when my first educator Sandra Martis from International Beauty Center said, that this kind of work requires lots of practice, determination and patience, I can honestly say - she was completely right. It does, but if you like what you do, it makes you want to succeed and get better. It sort of becomes “addictive” to learn as much as possible: to read
Above: Birute travelling to London earlier this year for a training course.

the forums on Facebook, follow other artists and educators on Instagram, analyse their pictures and learn different techniques or at least give it a try and see if it works for you. SOCIAL MEDIA OPENED DOORS Social media gave me opportunities to learn about future trainings or events I would like to attend and there were quite a few. Just 3 months after my initial trainings ( I was taught Classic and Volume on my trip to Lithuania), I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and there popped an add for Volume training with Irina Levchuk in Las Vegas, Nevada. Not thinking too much I emailed the organizer and few weeks later, I was sitting in the room with other ladies ready to learn more about Russian Volume technique. I can tell - Irina was surprised to learn from my introduction, that I am really fresh in lashing and warned me her
"Knowledge is Power"
- Sir Francis Bacon
training might be too advanced for me. But, knowing myself, I knew I can learn anything if I set my mind on it. I kept practicing, incorporating her advices into my work and since my fundamental trainings were great, I kept seeking more knowledge, more tips and tricks how to make both my Classic and Volume sets more full, more uniformed and my clients even more happier. More trainings in different destinations have followed : MY AIR MILES GREW..
( Ilona Čypiene of Baltic Beauty School Mega Volume in Chicago, Illinois ; Luisa Bässler of PhiLashes Advanced Volume Training in Los Angeles, California; assisting her in Russian Volume training in Los Angeles,California; Begginers, Russian Volume and Advanced Russian Volume trainings in Mexico City, Mexico) which gave me deeper understanding that there will always be more to know and nobody does or teaches lash artistry the same. Each educator teaches the way they learned, advanced and then added more tips and tricks from their experience. We, the students, get the knowledge and incorporate the information we were shared with in our work, but there will always be somebody to learn from. Lash industry is still evolving and growing. I FOU ND M Y CONFERENCES
LOV E
FOR
I was amazed by the Hollywood Lash Conference ( Los Angeles, California) speakers, how dedicated they are to bring the newest, most updated information on lash safety, styling, adhesives, application and more. We, attendees, had chances to ask questions and get tips from all participating educators and one of them was Miranda Tarpey of UK Lash Institute. Not only this beautiful smart woman taught us about lash safety, she also explained that beautiful looking set does not mean it is safe for client’s lashes.
She is a researcher, an international speaker and judge in lash conferences and competitions all over the world. I was convinced she is the right educator for me to take my Expert level-Train to Teach training in Luton, UK where UK Lash Institute is located. After all the trainings I had taken, I thought I will just refresh my knowledge, but little did I know, there was a lot to learn again. Miranda explained in detail, based on research, so many things we, lash artists, do right or wrong and never know why, but we all should. She is definitely an amazing educator to learn from and highly recommended.
KNOWLEDGE IS PRICELESS This article might sound like a CV, when applying for job position. It is also not for purpose to brag about the trips I took, although it is amazing to have the reason to travel to other countries besides sightseeing. I am writing it, because I want to encourage people to take long or short travels to the educators, who have proved themselves with their works, skills, experiences and reputations, that they have knowledge to share and your trip will be worth it. The world becomes so much smaller when there is a big dream and dedication involved. Dream big, never stop learning and travel wherever it takes, because knowledge is priceless!

& Business
STRESS
by Gabriella Gerardi
Editor, Lash Inc UK UK Lash Institute
Sleepless nights. Low Energy. Depression. Mood Swings. Inability to Focus. Stress comes in all different forms & affects you with different symptoms. These could be Emotional symptoms, Physical symptoms and Cognitive symptoms.
CUT STRESS OUT
It's so easy to say, but it's important to make some real life changes to truly be able to cut stress out.
It's a horrible cycle isn't it? We work hard, we build a successful business & we are thriving. Something hits children may be unwell, you could be grieving, something bad happens at work. Anything or everything can end up being a factor of stress. What is Stress? It's a chemical reaction that occurs in our bodies. It's part of the "flight or fight" response that our own bodies have evolved top cope with threats. It's a very common part of our daily working lives, so it's important for us to step back and evaluate what increases the amount of stress we have and how we can cope with it efficiently so our business doesn't get affected too.
CAFFEINE
is a hard one, especially for me (Coffee junkie) but there is a lot of research into how high intakes of caffeine increases Stress & Anxiety.
LAUGH
is something that i personally do every day. I am a big lover of laughing, I laugh at everything (which sometimes can get me in trouble) but life is about having fun and laughter. Which is why this is such a big way of cutting stress out, it's hard to feel so anxious about what's stressing you out when you're laughing, right? Plus, there are so many health benefits too. In the long term, it can help improve your mood and immune system. Laughter helps relieve your stress response and this then relieves tension and relaxes those muscles! Catch up with friends, find a good box set on Netflix - try to find the humour in your life and use it!
EXERCISE
is one of the most important things you can do to help relieve stress and in for your general health. Finding the time to fit exercise into your hectic schedule is a struggle that many business owners find, but exercise lowers your body's stress hormones (cortisol) and helps release the good chemicals (endorphins). You need to find something you enjoy, not everyone has to be a gym bunny! If walking is your thing, take a walk on your lunch break. Yoga or dancing are activities you can do at home with a good DVD or You-tube Channel.
39 - Business
NO!
Learn that word, and use it. It's fair to say that not everything that causes us to stress is something we can control, but it's important to take control of the ones we can. Be selective, say no to things that you know will cause you to feel overwhelmed or stressed out. I personally found this one hard, but last year I ended up in hospital unable to work, unable to do all of my to-do-lists & you know what happened? I learnt that work goes on, the work I had thought wouldn't be able to get done without me, did. I learned
that delegation is KEY and saying NO to things I knew were going to cause me to juggle too much at the same time, helped me. I became more organized and really loved the things I actually did as I wasn't as stressed out. Don't be afraid, people understand so if you are feeling stressed with areas of work you can't say no to, or afraid to say no to... they will understand. Just say NO!
ORGANIZATION
A really easy way to take control of stress, is to try (yes, try) to stay on top of your real priorities. Being organized means, get into the habit of making to-do lists, organize this by PRIORITY. Set yourself deadlines that are actually realistic and work through them one, by one. Find what you need to work on today and get those done. Set yourself a certain amount of uninterrupted time to go through your most important tasks. Now, I am a organized person. I love making my work life easy and planned - which means I am also a lover of anything that helps! There are obviously diaries out there, but the best things for me are APPS! Evernote - Basically the best app for To-Do Lists, you can create as many to do lists as you please.
Another way to relax, is to practice mindfulness. Research shows that is can help stress but also combat any negative thinking thoughts! An easy way to practice, is to close your eyes for 5 minutes, and just breathe. Breathe in for 4 seconds, pause and breathe out for 8 seconds. Continue this for 5 minutes and find yourself very relaxed (hopefully!) There are also APPs that have launched to help with Mindfulness practices. - CALM - HEADSPACE - THE MINDFULNESS APP
EXERCISE
There are many more to choose from, these are just the top I have personally used and recommend.
Slack - The UK Lash girls know I love this App!! This is a fantastic App for teams! You can share anything from photos, videos, documents and more with your whole team or individually. The App itself has add ons that make life easy too so it's always best to see what works for you. Calendar Apps - I prefer Google Calendar as you can create as many calendar as you want and have them all in once place, looks very scary if you have lots going on but it is so satisfying being organized and knowing what's coming up!
FRANKIE SAYS RELAX...
And he's right. Relaxation is a big big stress reliever! I'm talking about Yoga, Mediation or even a bubble bath!
Let's take Yoga, something I took up last year. Yes it's a big thing since 2018 and I can only imagine how much more popular it will continue to be in 2019 but it's a really great form of exercise for all ages! There are many different Yoga styles, the best thing to do is Youtube some and find what works for you. My absolute favourite is Yoga by Adrienne, she does monthly yoga classes that you can sign up for free and do it together with her, it's amazing! There are so many health benefits for Yoga - helps lower those cortisol level and blood pressure!
Other ways to relax could be listening to music, reading a book, spending time with your family and friends or even with your pet.
ORGANIZE
We all now that Stress is an every day occurrence, that is common with our daily lives but if we can try any of these ways to help relieve some of that stress, or anxiety we can help our work-life balance too.
LAUGHTER
I find all of these things helpful for me, and I hope that these help you all too. It's very very easy to get overwhelmed with work, and stress can attack us without us even knowing it. If I asked you, name me ways Stress affects you? Could you tell me? You might be able to tick a few things off I have spoken about, but sometimes you don't even class some symptoms as stress, you might be afraid to admit it too! I Manage the UK Lash Institute Brand, I run LASH EVENTS UK with Louise & Miranda, I Edit this magazine with Miranda, plus try to have a life (out of work), It's hard, it's tiring and for me to be OK and make sure that everything I do really works, is to make sure I don't let stress control me, rather me control stress!

Not the TV programme, but Brexit. The word that is on everyone’s lips and is the cause of eyes to glaze over. Given the timing of this issue, it would be remiss not to mention it and businesses are being encouraged to plan in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Whilst there will be implications from a business and trade perspective for employers to consider; workforce planning will be key in mitigating against any risk from a staffing aspect. With the record low unemployment rates, the CIPD has highlighted that: “Immigration restrictions may take place at a time when the UK labour market is already tight and facing challenges with its ageing population raises added concern.”
What should be considered? A decreased talent pool will require increased workforce planning but the first step is to check how individuals are feeling and be able to gauge potential turnover. The uncertainty of Brexit may be unsettling for some and for many businesses this will be the first time that workforce planning has needed to be a consideration.
•
Think about whether you can accommodate or increase the number of apprentices in your organisation. Studies have shown that employing apprentices can boost productivity and help increase competitive advantage.
•
Focus on developing existing staff, upskilling them and creating clear career pathways to retain key staff. Effective succession planning and having a talent pipeline will enable rapid filling of critical positions.
•
Use more innovative and creative attraction methods; talented individuals will be in demand, make it as easy as possible for them to apply and have a reputation for being an employer of choice.
