The Editor Hi Everyone!

Welcome to Issue 5 of Lash Inc Australasia! Thank you for your continued support coming into our second year of publishing. It’s been a very fulfilling journey so far and we are super excited to take your magazine in even better directions in the coming months. Our front cover artwork is by the amazingly talented Martina Kallos. With the global Lash Inc. theme for this issue ‘Competition’, the Lash Inc Australasia team have brought you stories on how you can make a splash in your pond. Martina’s stunning image was made for our cover! I would love to introduce our Assistant Editor Janelle Bolger. Janelle is one of the most knowledgeable lash artists I have ever met but she has never picked up a pair of tweezers!! She knows our industry inside out and has devoted the last 5 years to researching and developing for the sake of lash artists around the globe. We are extremely proud and honoured to have her onboard. I’m also so pleased to introduce three new additions to the Lash Inc Australasia Senior Journalist team - Mai Quach of Asena Artistry, Nadia Southon of NHMLash Studio, and Nina Andrews of Lashes on Point Salon and Academy. It’s refreshing to be able to promote content from a new and diverse group and I hope you find their back stories and articles as interesting as I have! Please feel free to contact us with any ideas for Lash Inc Australasia, anything you would like us to cover, or to submit your work into the Readers Gallery. Lashinc@enchantedspa.com.au

Janelle Bolger is the Business Development Manager for Enchanted SPA in Western Australia, a lash and brow artistry specialist organisation dedicated to quality products, training and salon services in the beauty field.

Mai Quach is an experienced lash artist, lash Educator and authorised Bordeaux_kz trainer in Australia. Her passion to learn the skill of eyelash extensions brought her to this industry.

With a corporate background in business and administration, Janelle spent most of her career in the airline industry before making the jump to beauty. She has held diverse roles covering sales and marketing, policy, procedure and product development, purchasing and contract negotiation and performance management. After a short stint in local government, she returned to her airline roots coordinating special projects for a regional subsidiary and moving to Queensland. After returning to Perth to raise her two boys, Janelle began a freelance consulting business utilising her broad experience in a new field, the world of beauty, before joining Enchanted SPA permanently in 2017. As Assistant Editor for Lash Inc Australasia, Janelle supports Editor in Chief Kelly Storer and the Australasian Senior Journalist team, liaising with the Global and Local Design teams to bring the magazine to life.

Mai graduated from ITEC (England) and CIDESCO (Switzerland), international beauty therapy associations. She's been doing lashes since 2010 and still loving it to this day. Because of the lack of quality training in the industry back in 2016, Mai decided to teach and started with one on one training. Her goal is to bring out the inner self and creativity from students and use that to help them in their lashing journey. Mai offers online lash training and in-person training through her company, Asena Artistry.

After 7 years as an account manager, Nadia left her job to become full time carer for her daughter who had Leukaemia. In 2010 Nadia began lashing and worked for a few salons before venturing out on her own and lashing in between nursing her daughter back to health. As the lash industry has grown and evolved, so has Nadia's clientele and love for being a lash artist. 8 years later, she has just opened her first studio in Mt Gravatt, NHMLASH Studio and is loving it!

Nina Andrews has had the pleasure of being part the of thriving Australian lash community for the last 10 years. She boasts 10 lash certifications, a NALA Lash Educator certification and a Master Lash Artist title. Nina runs one of Australia's first exclusively Russian Volume Salons in the northern Melbourne suburbs called "Lashes On Point Salon and Training Academy". This boutique specialty salon produces stunning Russian Volume to a high standard, seeing up to 400 clients a month. Nina continues to lash and teach both new and advanced technicians to take their lashes to the next level.

A Great Lash Business is More than Just

Being a Great Lash Artist by Kimberley Coleman

Lady Lash Studio and Academy Christchurch New Zealand

There is so much more to a great lash business than great lashes. Throughout my lash artist journey, I’ve learnt how a few little GLɣHUHQFHV DQG H[WUD VSHFLDO WRXFKHV FDQ KHOS \RX UHWDLQ FOLHQWV IRU life! My name is Kimberley Coleman and I am the owner of Lady Lash Studio and Academy Christchurch, New Zealand. I currently have three amazing girls contracting to me and I work in the salon specialising in lashes, lash lifts and henna brows. I am also a lash trainer and business mentor. :KHQ , ¿UVW VWDUWHG RYHU \HDUV DJR I offered mobile lashes, driving all over the city to give the women of &KULVWFKXUFK ODVK H[WHQVLRQV , GLGQœW have a massage table, lamp, or much at all, but what I did have was my passion for making people feel amazing. After studying a few psychology papers, I FDPH WR XQGHUVWDQG WKH VL[ KXPDQ needs; significance, connection, certainty, variety, growth and love. The

most important of these for my job is connection and significance. People love to feel heard and important and they love connecting with me on more than just the surface level.

Fast forward a few years and I was running my business from a beautiful character house where I rented a sunny URRP QH[W WR RWKHU VPDOO EXVLQHVVHV , decided early on how I wanted my lash room to look, how it would smell and how it would make people feel when they entered the room. I wanted it to spark and shine and smell delicious always!

Back then sometimes my lashes were not that great, but my clients always said how much they loved spending time with me and how they always felt better after I had been at their house. I DOVR IHOW LQVSLUHG DQG H[FLWHG DIWHU HDFK DSSRLQWPHQW DQG P\ FRQ¿GHQFH JUHZ I eventually got too busy traveling to clients’ homes, so I moved my business to my parents’ house in a little sleep-out I painted and decorated to be my new lash room. This was perfect for me at the time and my business continued to grow.

I created my room to be a safe, warm and comfortable space so when people HQWHUHG WKH\ ZDQWHG WR VWD\ UHOD[ and escape the outside world. I chose candles that I loved and made my FOLHQWV DQG , IHHO UHOD[HG DQG FRQWHQW , FUHDWHG D SOD\ OLVW ZLWK KDSS\ UHOD[LQJ songs, and each time a client walked in the room I would ask for 2 or 3 of their favourite songs to add to my play list. For my clients to be comfortable on the beds I invested in thick foam mattress covers, memory foam pillows and cosy mink blankets.

After nearly 2 years and the addition of two lash artists, it was time for our own space. Right from the start I had a strong vision that I wanted my new salon to look like a little cottage, with a cute white picket fence and black door. I even drew a picture of it. So, when I UDQGRPO\ WRRN D GLÉŁHUHQW URXWH KRPH and drove past my dream premises for rent, I was not surprised at all. The universe put it all in place for me! My family and I spent hours painting and preparing my new salon to look H[DFWO\ KRZ , KDG LPDJLQHG , ZDQWHG clients to walk in the door and go “wow, I just love it in here’. I like my clients to feel like their appointment is entirely about them. I VSHQG WKH ÂżUVW PLQXWHV KDYLQJ D FKDW about their day and gauge their current mood. I like to ask why they are getting lashes and what their day to day look is, taking time to really listen to their words. After I have gone over their consent form and terms and conditions, I always ask if they would like to go to the bathroom before they start. Often, they do, and this is great as it prevents a disruption later. A nice little touch is to add candles, beautiful soap and hand cream in the bathroom, with a drawer full of feminine products just in case. I invite my client to climb up on the bed and cover them with a cosy mink blanket, always covering their feet. When clients lay still for long periods of time they can feel cooler, so the blanket creates a comforting feeling, even on warmer days. When applying the eye pads, I dim the overhead lights to prevent their eyes straining or watering, which can cause the pads to move around the irritate the eyes. During lash application, music plays, and we usually have a great chat. I GR H[SODLQ WKDW IDFLDO PRYHPHQWV FDQ disrupt the application, so I ask clients WR NHHS DV VWLOO DV SRVVLEOH , ÂżQG SHRSOH just want someone to listen. Usually it’s their worries or issues they are going through, or maybe they have achieved

something they are proud of and want to share. Mothers love to talk about mum life and how hard or wonderful it is, and some women like to share stories about relationships, friends, work and life in general. I let people talk, I think they come to us for the IXOO H[SHULHQFH RI UHOD[LQJ XQORDGLQJ and leaving feeling lighter, happier and more beautiful with an amazing set of lashes! I think a lot about the feelings clients H[SHULHQFH ZKHQ WKH\ OHDYH /DG\ /DVK studio. I want every one of our clients to feel loved and appreciated, to feel like they need that feeling again, and they want to share their feeling of happiness with their friends. This is very important to me and my business. I learnt colours make people feel a certain way, so I chose my colour scheme based on this and colours I love. The Lady Lash logo has shades of pink and purple to ignite a feeling of creativity, imagination and wisdom, and green foliage to add a peaceful, nurturing vibe. People don’t usually have these colours in their homes, especially the pinks and purples, so it makes people feel quite surprised and KDSS\ WR VHH ORWV RI FRORXU DQG WH[WXUH in one place. I also use a lot of leopard print throughout the studio –a nod to my own personal style which is bold and bright.

in the waiting area for payment. Every client gets a lash wand, a rebooking card and a little chocolate to take with them. Often, I get a huge hug because they are so happy and feel so much better than when they came in! My goal as a business owner is to serve my clients in the best way possible, to make them feel valued, loved and beautiful each time they come to visit Lady Lash; and no matter who they see at the salon, leave with the same warm fuzzies every appointment.

These warm fuzzies and good vibes is why, I believe we have very high client return rate. Are you remembering all those little extras to keep your valued customers coming back? Give it a go, your clients will love you for it, and those great connections will be made forever.

2. Angled Shape This one is shaped at an angle toward the ears of the clients. This particular shape makes the eyes appear longer than normal. This technique will make the eyes look stunning especially for Mega Volume.

Ready to

Relocate?

by Nadia Southon NHM Lash Studio

Is it time for a change of scenery? We are all a part of an industry that is still quite new, paths are still being paved and simple things like planning the direction of our businesses are often overlooked. Most lash techs are currently working from home-based studios. As the industry grows so are our businesses. More salons are moving out of the home and into commercial spaces. After 8 years of being at home and renting beauty rooms, I recently made the transition. I had NO idea where to start or what to do, however, now that I have been through the process I thought I would share with you a few things that I have learnt on the way. PS it’s not as hard as you may think! This is a basic guideline that will hopefully either get you started on your journey to opening your first commercial salon, or help you refresh/ improve your current space.

19 - Lash Inc Australasia

Am I ready for a commercial space? Maybe you want to hire another lash tech, or start training students, or maybe you want to add additional ser v ices that compliment lash H[WHQVLRQV VXFK DV PLFUREODGLQJ $OO of these often mean that your current space won’t meet council standards. Moving to a commercial space is by no means imperative for growing your business. But if the direction you want to grow means operating from home might not work anymore, here are some things to consider.

What are your business goals

Where would you like to see your EXVLQHVV EUDQG LQ \HDUV"

What are your personal Pros/ Cons of moving from home to a commercial space?

If you have decided that YES, you want to make the move from home to salon, what now? First, set your budget. Taking on a shop incurs overheads, When planning the NHMLASH move, we broke down the current cost of running the business on a monthly basis and had a plan in place for incremental revenue growth. 7KLV JDYH XV DQ DSSUR[LPDWH ¿JXUH WKDW we could use to narrow down a list of VSDFHV ZH FRXOG DɣRUG FRPIRUWDEO\ Of course, if you are wanting to put more money into your space up front, you could go down the route of getting

a business loan. Make a decision that works best for you and your business.

Choosing the location For me, choosing a location was based on budget and distance from my home salon. I didn't want to stray too far from where I was currently lashing as most of my clients were local. Some things that you might want WR FRQVLGHU DUH DPHQLWLHV H[LVWLQJ surrounding businesses, whether they complement your business i.e., hair/ QDLO VDORQV DOVR RWKHU H[LVWLQJ ODVK H[WHQVLRQV EXVLQHVVHV ,I \RX KDYH WKH option to choose where you are located, it would help to be spread out rather than in a cluster. Lash appointments do last a few hours so having handy accessible parking would be a big drawcard for new and H[LVWLQJ FOLHQWV

Important to know Hire the services of a lawyer and accountant – the cost upfront could save your business down the track and should be factored into your budget. If your lease is relatively straight forward, you will only need a lawyer to legally advise you on the lease, they will read over and discuss the lease with you to make sure that you completely understand what you are signing. If your lease is a little more complicated you might need a lawyer to communicate or negotiate with the landlord (if this is the case, the billable hours may be a little higher).

If you don’t feel that making the move from home to shop is for you, UHIUHVKLQJ \RXU H[LVWLQJ VSDFH FDQ EH MXVW DV HÉŁHFWLYH , FKDQJHG P\ KRPH studio around regularly and when I did LW ZRXOG DOZD\V OHDYH PH H[FLWHG WR JHW LQ WKHUH WKH QH[W GD\ DQG ODVK ZLWK D passion. Here are a few ways you can update your current space:

Some great advice from two experienced salon owners;

Customise! – using websites like Etsy, Zazzle or Vistaprint allows you get creative and add a professional personal touch to your space like a printed or laser cut sign.

“For a commercial space, don’t pay more than 3 months bond and 3 months rent free period is standard. A lot of people don’t know that. Renting a room before moving to your own commercial lease is prudent because covering large rent is stressful and unless you have amazing marketing, filling books for staff will take time. /\GLD RZQHU RI %URQ]H %RPEVKHOO %HDXW\ :$

Change up the colour scheme, something as simple as adding a throw or rug in complimentary colours to \RXU H[LVWLQJ FRORXU SDOOHW LV QRW RQO\ FRVW HÉŁHFWLYH LW FDQ FKDQJH WKH IHHO RI the space.

“LOTS of insurance to cover the shop including public liability, personal and contents. Workcover, Or Worker’s insurance, protect yourself and your business by making sure you have a good employment agreement and put systems and procedures in place to deal with emergencies and unexpected situations such as sick leave. If you are bringing your own products in from overseas make sure you cover yourself by taking out additional insurance (manufacturers insurance). Ie if you buy gel pads overseas and something is wrong with that batch which causes damage or blindness you are actually classified as the importer/ in Australian terms you are now the manufacturers and are liable for that product. Normal insurance does not cover this. /XLVD RZQHU RI /DVK KROLF 4/'

Think about what your clients are laying on. Are you using a table or chair that isn’t working for you? I used to replace my beauty tables every couple of years even though I knew that it hurt my back and my clients didn’t like it. One day I bit the bullet and tried a recliner. All I know is I should have made the switch sooner, its made a KXJH GLɣHUHQFH EHWZHHQ SHUVHYHULQJ through long days and enjoying them.

Whichever direction you feel is best for your business, it’s important for us to take a step back every now and then and think about the ‘big picture’, where we want to be. As small business owner/ operators we often neglect to track our own progress. It is all too easy to get caught up in the grind of daily lashing. Think big, set goals and have a plan. %RXQFH LGHDV RÉŁ FROOHDJXHV DQG IULHQGV and don’t forget to celebrate your wins, big or small!

My Face Awards 2018

Journey

by Courtney Leigh Hollins Centre of Attention Makeup Artistry

I am still pinching myself over the fact that I am the 2018 Face Awards Artist of the year!!! It wasn’t an easy road, but I will tell you all about it. Last year I entered the Face Awards hosted by NYX professional makeup. I was lucky enough to make it into the top 6 and was the only WA entrant to do so. It was a stressful time, being a mum, freelance makeup artist and having a FIFO partner but I managed to pull through. Unfortunately, I did not win and said to myself that I wouldn’t enter again because of my workload. However, my family and followers talked me into entering again this year and I am so glad I did.

5 Super Important Things You Should Know

About Microblading

by Kelly Innes Gingerella Rox

Unless you’ve been hiding on another planet for the past year or so, most people will have heard about Microblading. Microblading is also known as Feather Touch Brow Tattoo in Australia. It is the KRWWHVW QHZHVW WUHQG IRU EURZV DQG KDV EHFRPH H[WUHPHO\ SRSXODU over the last few years! Say goodbye to the days of the old, big block, brow tattoos and hello to super natural looking, hairstroke brow tattoos! 1. What is Microblading? With Microblading we do not go as deep into the skin like old traditional cosmetic block tattoos, we stay in the upper levels of the skin – this combined with the cosmetic pigment used makes the procedure semipermanent. Compared to other brow tattoo techniques, “Microblading gives a very natural look and better simulates hair – the result is natural looking brows made up of tiny little hair-like strokesâ€? says Kelly Innes, Master Brow Artist and EURZ H[SHUW ZKR RÉŁHUV 0LFUREODGLQJ VHUYLFHV DW KHU VDORQ *LQJHUHOOD 5R[ LQ Perth, Australia.

I cannot stress the important of doing your research before choosing your Brow Artist. Ensure you search thoroughly online, check through pictures of the artist’s work. How long the results can last also varies, but most client’s brows last between 6 months to 18 months, depending on the skin (it stays longer in dry skin types) and their lifestyle (if you are continuously out in the sun, and love to sunbake this will fade your brows faster).

As mentioned earlier Microblading is a semi-permanent procedure and requires regular touch ups to keep them looking perfect. In Australia, the sun is constantly on our face. Once your brows are healed we highly recommend using a sunblock on your brows every day before you put on your cosmetics, this will help reduce fading in your brow tattoos.

After your treatment you are advised to avoid getting your brows wet for 7 days (which includes steam and sweat). It is also recommended not to swim in the ocean or pool for 14 days as salt water/ chlorine can draw out the pigment. High School Drop-out to

Salon Owner by Bianca Polinelli

Just Lashes Franchisee

Growing up I always felt like the black sheep. On my 16th birthday in 2009 I moved out of home when my mother went to work and dropped out of a selective high school later that year. I had an attitude, a bit of a mouth, and refused to conform to social standards. I didn’t like being told what to do and wanted to run my own show. Little did I know that just under 6 years later I would be doing just that but on a much bigger scale. Over the coming years I learnt what it was like to be independent and how much I loved working with people from my positions in the retail industry. I began to dedicate myself to my work putting my hand up for as many shifts as I could. Creating Seasonal

Lash Sets

To Enhance Your Social Media by Michelle Meredith-Rath Lash Inc. Senior Journalist Sinful Lashes

Keeping your social media fresh and crisp is no mean feat. One way which worked well for me is to create art to celebrate the things that you and your followers are passionate about. You could use various themes such as holidays, festivals, social issues, or even just celebrate the season - the possibilities are endless. Colourful, themed art keeps your followers engaged, and can also bring a whole new clientele through your doors – people love pictures. Eyepatches by Hanna Putjato

Love Them or Hate Them?

Lash Inc. Senior Journalist CEO, London Lash Pro

The application of eyepatches can sometimes be tricky. Whether \RX DUH DQ H[SHULHQFHG ODVK WHFKQLFLDQ RU D FRPSOHWH EHJLQQHU \RX should always follow these simple rules:

Use protein remover pads to wipe the eye area from any oils to ensure patches stick to the skin well. Eyepatches will not stick to oily skin properly. Use one pair of eyepatches per client and dispose them after the use Apply the eyepatches 1-2 mm below the waterline and cover the bottom lashes Adjust the eyepatches after your client has closed her eyes and secure the placement of patches with micropore tape if needed If any baby lashes pop out, cover them with micropore tape

But even if you follow all eyepatch application rules, you can still struggle sometimes. Problem 1: Client’s bottom lashes are so strong and springy that they are popping out of the eyepatches Solution: place the eyepatches under the bottom Lashes and apply micropore tape on the top - all natural lashes will be “sandwichedâ€? between the tape and eyepatches and will stay in place until the end of the treatment. Please make sure you stick the micropore tape to WKH EDFN RI WKH KDQG ÂżUVW VR LW EHFRPHV OHVV VWLFN\ 2WKHUZLVH \RX PLJKW ÂżQG GLɤFXOW WR UHPRYH WKH WDSH DIWHU WKH treatment. Problem 2: You have placed the eyepatches and they now look very comfortable for you and you are ready to start the lash application. Shortly after you start the treatment, your clients eyes start watering. Solution: Before you start the treatment, lift the top eyelid up and check that the eyepatches are not touching your client’s eyes or the waterline. If

eyepatches are touching the eyeball or the waterline, then it may irritate your client’s eyes, causing them to water and resulting with redness at the end of the treatment. Problem 3: The gel always plumps out and sticks to your client’s eyes Solution: This is the after effect of the eyepatches applied too close your client’s eyes - it will scratch the eye inside. Make sure you check that the eyepatches are not touching the eyeballs of your client by lifting up the eyelid before starting the application. Problem 4: You can’t see the lashes in the outer corner as they are bent under the eyepatches Solution: In order to get the lashes out from underneath the eyepatch, simply peel the patches up and move them down without pulling the eyelid down. You can also use the help of tweezers to gently pull the lashes out from under the eyepatch.

Similar to the ‘debutante’ culture across many societies where the ball gown takes centre stage, I too felt that my attire should make a ‘lashing’ impact, and those of you in attendance may have noticed I donned my ‘millennial’ style kilt. I did so for many reasons, but in the main to celebrate our International Editor Louise Tierney’s Scottish Roots in this truly global industry. It is imperative to allow ourselves time, space and balance. The point I was making to the students in attendance was to embrace such times in one’s career and use it as fuel, be it a rejection letter or email, and I took copies of my own rejection letters and emails to show the students.

Lash Technician, Lash Artist,

Lash Master!

by Katie Godfrey

Director, KG Professional 7KLV LV DQ LQWHUHVWLQJ VXEMHFW ZKLFK UDLVHV D PL[WXUH RI RSLQLRQV What do you call yourself? What do you claim to be? Let’s get this right though as no one gives us this title. It is what we choose to call ourselves or what others in the industry kindly put forward. These are my opinions and views on this subject:

Lash Technicians: We are all lash technicians, whether you have completed a one-day course, been doing them for years or you are an award-winning technician. This is what we are! After completing a semipermanent eyelash course, this is the job title you receive.

Lash Artists: I believe, and this is just my opinion, that a lash artist is the title given after you have completed your Russian volume course. When students train with me in Russian volume, I always say to them that I’m turning a lash technician into a lash artist, because I am teaching them such an advanced technique. I’m teaching them how to style the eye, how to use the lashes to protect the natural lash.

63 - Lashes

When attending a training course always ensure you take on board what the educator is telling you and put it into action when you go live on clients. Don’t just do one eyelash course and think you are done with all your training. Go on many courses and choose courses conducted by lash artists who inspire you. Travel if you must, don’t just FKRRVH WKH ¿UVW DQG QHDUHVW FRXUVH \RX ¿QG On each course you attend you will learn new techniques and methods. Even if it’s only one or two “lightbulb moments”, you will be able to improve your sets each time! I highly recommend training at least once a year with someone new or even a refresher course with the company you use. Techniques and products are changing all the time, so it’s very important to keep fresh and current. This will also place you above your competition.

Above: *RRG ZRUN attracts good FOLHQWV 0DNH \RXU VSDFH UHÀHFW \RXU EXVLQHVV

Lash Master: Now this is a huge one, so what is a lash master? Personally, I feel someone should have this title once they have been lashing for several years and have participated in numerous training FRXUVHV $OO WKHLU ZRUN LV H[FHSWLRQDO every time and they have won several awards. Someone that knows the lash industry inside out and whatever question is thrown at them they can answer without any struggle. Someone you look up to in the industry and is a role model who inspires you. I also feel this is a great title for lash artists who are all of the above but have chosen to step back and now either teach, judge competitions, or advance the industry overall. Even though that person might not lash anymore they still have that skill forever their title should always stay with them. I would love to hear your views on this topic and what you feel distinguishes lash technicians, lash artists, and lash masters.

Sure, it looks glamorous; traveling all over the world, building a name for yourself, and doing what you love. What about the behind the scenes that no one tells us about? I have been lucky enough to sit down with two well respected educators in our industry to understand their viewpoints on the pros and cons of being a lash educator.

Hilaree Brand of My Brand Lashes "In 2001, I was introduced to H\HODVK H[WHQVLRQV ZKLOH DWWHQGLQJ Dallas Roberts Academy. Upon graduation, I was completely in love with lashes and never looked back. From there, my loyal clientele grew. I wanted to be the best I could be for them so I attended Mandalyn Academy where I got my Masters in Aesthetics in 2008. I married my best friend and high school sweetheart whose love and support helped me start My Brand Lashes. In 2009, I set myself apart as a leader in the lash industry by becoming a licensed Cosmetology and Aesthetics instructor. The Reason Businesses Fail on by Julia Mann

Social Media

CEO of Lash Tribe Today, I want to tell you about the main reason why most businesses fail on social media. I have created a well known and respected global brand, won academy of the year 2018 and travel all over the world to judge, speak in front of thousands and coach others to grow their businesses and become better lash artists. All with the help of social media marketing, following a few simple ground rules and working hard. You can never get anywhere unless you work on it, every single day. Because I have studied this intensely over the last few years I have watched most businesses fail and only some succeed. So let me share. The main reason why businesses fail on social media: procrastination and NO implementation. Today’s social media world. It seems like such a complicated and big task, and guess what? This is why most people don’t even get started. They get overwhelmed and then they simply get scared, don’t do it and procrastinate. If you are on social media today and don't post multiple times per day on your business page, you are leaving $$$ on the table. This is a simple fact. The numbers don’t lie.

Facebook's algorithm currently loves to see many posts that add a lot of value to the community. No, I am not talking about sales post. I am talking about good old-fashioned value, post and stories that really interest their likers. This is something I tell my business students almost everyday: “You gotta get more social on Social Media or you will NOT grow today’s businesses, into tomorrow’s businesses.â€? $QG WKLV LV H[DFWO\ ZKDW KDSSHQHG WR PH ZKHQ , ÂżUVW VWDUWHG ,W DOO IHOW OLNH a big wall and I had to slowly start to climb it. So how on earth should we know where we to start? Start with ONE and maybe add a second channel if you are a fast learner. In the beauty and lash world, I would recommend you start with Facebook

and Instagram. It's visual and engaging. It’s very active and reactive. Get to k ow your followers and show them who you are. People don’t buy from businesses. They buy from people. (Unless you are Apple or Nike) Facebook owns Instagram and ,QVWDJUDP LV DQ H[FHOOHQW RXWOHW WR showcase your work online and reach those who are looking for a Lash Artist in their area. How to

by Paul Luebbers

General Manager of Integrity Lash Co-host of LashCast Podcast

Over the last twelve years my wife and I have run Integrity Lash, we’ve realised that one of the most important decisions is whom to hire and allow to join our team. You could say we are ‘battle KDUGHQHGÂś E\ RXU H[SHULHQFHV :HÂśYH VHHQ HPSOR\HHV GR DOO VRUWV RI XQH[SHFWHG WKLQJV SKRQHV DQG L3DGV VWROHQ FRPSOHWH ZLWK FOLHQW contact info, cash from the safe and tips absconded with. Yes, you do feel shock and disbelief when these things happen. I used to blame these employees and just think they were “bad applesâ€?, but after much contemplation, I’ve come to the realisation that I’m the reason these employees didn’t work out. I looked in the mirror, accepted the fact WKDW , ZDV DQ LQH[SHULHQFHG OHDGHU DQG determined it was one of two things that happened: 1.

They joined our team with high hopes to help us build a company but somewhere along the line, I let them down and broke trust with them which resulted in them in becoming bitter. 2. They were a bad match with the company from the start, and I was not discerning enough to see WKH\ GLG QRW UHDOO\ ¿W RXU FXOWXUH They were not bad people, they MXVW GLGQœW ¿W LQ ZLWK WKH ZD\ ZH wanted to run our company and because I was desperate for the help, I earnestly hoped they’d adapt and make it work. Hiring a square peg is not the square peg’s fault but hoping they’ll adapt to the round hole never works and is unfair.

As we’ve bumped and bruised along the way, we’ve developed a recruitment system which has really improved our FKDQFHV RI ÂżQGLQJ D JRRG PDWFK IRU both us and for the potential employee. I know we are not the only salon who VWUXJJOH WR ÂżQG WKH ULJKW HPSOR\HHV , hear this concern all the time from other salon owners. My hope is, by sharing our system in this article it will help others to ‘hire smarter’.

83 - Business

I think too many salon owners today just do one interview, look at some photos of the potential employee’s work, and take them on with high hopes it will work out. Looking back at the early days of our salon, we joke now that all you needed was a heartbeat, a friendly face and we’d hire you. We realised there must be a better process way to you give yourself, as well as the potential HPSOR\HH D EHWWHU FKDQFH RI ¿QGLQJ WKH right match.

Don’t be desperate - be patient. You might be working crazy hours and really need some help, but when you recruit out of desperation, you will not be discerning and may allow the wrong recruit into your company. Just hiring whoever looks “good enoughâ€? RIWHQ GRHV QRW SD\ RÉŁ ZHOO %H SDWLHQW and really verify who you are bringing on board. This person who you plan to bring into your inner circle can become either your greatest ally or the very undoing of your business. Think of recruitment as you might think about getting married; you wouldn’t make a life-time commitment to marry the best of three people you met only once a bar. You’d make sure you get to know a potential partner and try to discern their character before you make a lifelong covenant. It’s better to NOT hire a potential HPSOR\HH ZKR LV D SRRU ÂżW DQG ORVH business than to hire an employee who LV D EDG ÂżW DQG ORVH \RXU EXVLQHVV LW almost happened to us).

Here is our Integrity Lash recruitment process. It is designed to tease apart a candidate’s motivations, to reveal character, and to determine if she will be successful at our salon. (For simplicity, I will be using female pronouns throughout this article, but I do understand that both men and women can be great candidates for any salon).

16 Questions When I first receive an email or a submission through a job site, I email the candidate 16 questions - I want to see if the candidate replies (most do not). This prevents me from chasing candidates who aren’t that interested. 7KH TXHVWLRQV FDQ EH PRGL¿HG WR UHYHDO what is most important to you as a EXVLQHVV RZQHU , DVN DERXW H[SHULHQFH and if she does not have enough (we look for one year) we encourage her to keep learning and come back to us once she has the relevant amount. There are a couple of technical questions, plus inevitable ones about our company. I’m looking to avoid someone simply looking for a J.O.B. I want someone who wants to contribute and build a career with us - it reveals a limited level of engagement if she has not carried out even a basic google search.

Social Media If the person replies to my email, I immediately look at her social media, having included this as part of the 16 questions. Usually, she will just list the social media showing her lash work, so , WU\ WR ÂżQG KHU SHUVRQDO SDJHV DV WKLV tends to reveal who she really is. If I ÂżQG KHU FRPSODLQLQJ DERXW OLIH RU ZRUN or photos of her being irresponsible, I will politely pass on the candidate.

Phone Interview This is a designed to be a little more in-depth, but the goal is to keep it under 30 minutes. I’m trying to gauge how much the candidate knows about us. Has she researched our Instagram, read our responses to reviews? Has she scoured our website, and does she know our stated goals and mission, has she proven to herself that our salon shares her values? During the call, I’m trying to gauge how she is motivated. What drives her? Is she solely motivated by PRQH\ RU LV VKH DIWHU Ă€H[LELOLW\ RU D career path? I want to make sure her GULYHU PDWFKHV ZKDW ZH FDQ RÉŁHU ,ÂśP also assessing her communication skills. Is she able to speak clearly, do her answers make sense, and is she able to hold a conversation? Is it laborious RU GLɤFXOW WR WDON WR KHU" , XVH WKH phone call to present “hoopsâ€? that she may or may not want to jump through. I talk about our DNA: We have two shifts which might constitute ‘odd’ hours. We are a team-based salon not a commission salon, we require a two-year commitment and only hire full time. These can be deterrents and unattractive to those who want something different, and I want to LGHQWLI\ WKLV FRQĂ€LFW DV VRRQ DV SRVVLEOH There was a day when I tried to convince people of the merits of working with us, EXW , KDYH IRXQG WKDW LW LV EHWWHU WR ÂżQG candidates who already believe in our message and way of working than to try and convert non-believers.

I want to know if she can keep eye contact with me through the whole interview. During this meeting, I will ask her essentially WKH VDPH TXHVWLRQ LQ GLɣHUHQW ZD\V I want to see if she is consistent with her answers. If she is not, it means she could be making things up. I’m not saying that any one of these things should be a deal breaker, but it’s in your best interest to know as much DV SRVVLEOH DERXW DQ\ UHG ÀDJV , DOVR want to see if asking similar questions frustrates the candidate and how she

handles it. If I have time, I will take her outside the salon environment, VXFK DV D FRÉŁHH EDU D PRUH FDVXDO setting will help her to let down her guard and reveal more of her character. Engineering a way to see how she interacts and treat others while under a little stress (the interview) can be constructive. 0\ JRDO GXULQJ WKLV LQWHUYLHZ LV WR ÂżQG out if this person is humble, hungry and smart (people-smart not booksmart). If you want to improve your recruitment process I recommend reading “The Ideal Team Playerâ€? by Patrick Lencioni. He builds a great case for how these three traits are the most important ones you need to seek in an employee. It’s a quick read, and it will completely change your hiring process.

Audition with the Lead Trainer If I feel the candidate is solid with the qualities we are looking for, we will bring her back for an audition with our lead trainer. We ask the candidate to bring a model and come to our salon with the tools and products she is most comfortable using. We only hire people with a minimum of one year of H[SHULHQFH VR LI VKH WHOOV PH KHUH VKH doesn’t have any tools, I know that she isn’t very serious with her career which helps us to eliminate some of the

We just want to see her command of the tweezers and how she handles the lashes. Our trainer will let KHU GR ODVKHV DORQH IRU PLQXWHV so she can get comfortable. No matter WKH H[SHULHQFH HYHU\ FDQGLGDWH VKDNHV a bit, and we reassure her it’s ok and the nerves will calm. The trainer will observe the potential candidate for a bit once the jitters have passed. We’re not assessing technique because we’re going to train her in our way, but we’re looking for muscle control and the ability to perform the basic components of lashing. After another 10 minutes or so, our lead stylist will try to teach the candidate some of our lashing technique. If the person is resistant to the feedback, we know she is not humble and not a JRRG ÂżW IRU RXU FRPSDQ\ ,I VKH WDNHV the feedback with a good attitude, then this is another sign to us that she could EH D JRRG ÂżW :H DOZD\V UHWUDLQ RXU VWDÉŁ when we hire them, this audition gives us an idea of how long it will take us to train the new employee.

Business Breakdown: Who is

Your Competition? by Andi Ramsay

Creative Director, Lumogenesis

Hi everyone, and welcome to the 'Competition Issue' of Lash Inc. The ZRUG FRPSHWLWLRQ FRQMXUHV D ORW RI GLÉŁHUHQW PHDQLQJV GHSHQGLQJ WR ZKRP DQG LQ ZKDW FRQWH[W \RX VD\ LW ,Q WKH /DVK ,QGXVWU\ LW implies two principal meanings; a contest where you compete against other lash artists and a set of judging criteria to demonstrate your skill; and the other lash artists who operate businesses in your area who your clients (and potential clients) may go to instead of coming to you. I want to speak brief ly about both meanings, and hopefully demonstrate a few truths and a few myths about both as the way in which you think about FRPSHWLWLRQ FDQ KDYH D PDUNHG HÉŁHFW on your success, both in contests, and in attracting clients.

Contests The lash world loves a contest. They happen all year long, all over the world, DQG LI \RX ZDQW WR VHH WKH H[WUDRUGLQDU\ skills present in the industry then you are sure to see it at a competition. Coming up very soon we have Lash Battle in Glasgow, and The Lash Games in London. Both are sure to bring out the "mad skillz" of Lash Artists from every corner of the globe. ,Q P\ H[SHULHQFH D ORW RI SHRSOH ODVK artists included, they are people after all!) shy away from contests when they don't think they can match the performance on the top rung of the ladder. This is a huge mistake and they are missing out on a great opportunity to grow and learn. The artists who win the top prizes at these events don't just

And, just like in contests, when you run a business you have to take the hits when they come. You win by working hard, not taking the shortcuts, and always putting your best foot forward. When you market your business, always highlight your strengths, show your best work, keep doing everything you can to show that you are the one to choose. You might not be able to force people to book an appointment with you, but if you speak proudly, show yourself to be respectful and talented, WKHQ \RX FDQ LQĂ€XHQFH WKH ZD\ WKDW those clients look at lash artists overall. Then your stand-out traits work in your favour and against your competition.

quietly lash away until they "feel ready" and then enter the most challenging categories. They compete for years; sometimes winning, sometimes losing; until their names are well known, and their skills are perfectly honed. Then they work even harder to take the coveted trophies. Don't hold back waiting until you think you're perfect, build your skills up slowly. Get into the beginner categories, lose a few contests, watch the work of the winners and learn how to improve.

In essence you are teaching people what to look for in a Lash Artist. So that when those things are absent in your competitors, they are noticed.

In a lot of ways, competition in business is the same as competition at contests.

Never put bad work out in the world, whether it is in an online contest, a live lashing event, or an evening client after a hard day. Always work your best, realise that someone is always judging you, and that you can win if \RX MXVW NHHS JUDEELQJ WKH QH[W UXQJ XS the ladder, and climbing with all your might!

You don't get to choose who your competition are. You are the person who decides who is the best. You win some, and you lose some.

Keep growing by always learning.

You will get there. I believe in you. Business

How To Win by Louise Tierney

Business Awards

Editor-in-Chief, Lash Inc. Magazine

This is the third instalment in our series on winning awards for your business. Part 1 appeared in Issue 17, part 2 appeared in Issue 18.

Step 3 Testimonials

their opinion matters, which has to be a good thing. Then you can choose the very best nominations for your entry.

Customer Testimonials and Nominations

Do you know customers, suppliers and partners who have said something wonderful about your business or are willing to commit something in writing for your entry? Customer testimonials should be easy to get as customers love to say something nice about something they love. It’s probably not something they will get asked to do so very often!

Some award bodies may ask for customer nominations as part of your entry. It may be just a small part of the application but it’s still very important as the little things can mean a lot to the awards organisers. It doesn’t do any harm trying to get as many nominations/customer testimonials as possible. It will also make clients feel important and that

87 - Business

In order to get Nominations to support your application you can either produce your own form to give out to clients or provide an online version so customers can nominate via your website.

Above: /RXLVH ZLWK one of her PDQ\ DZDUGV

But of course, the awards company may have their own version to use. Get this right and it can make the world of GLÉŁHUHQFH WR \RXU GUHDPV RI ZLQQLQJ If you are producing your own, here is DQ H[DPSOH RI D IUHH RQOLQH YHUVLRQ RI D testimonial form creator:

www.webformdesigner.com Other creators can be built into your website and it’s not too for one. The basic information you need WR LQFOXGH LV ODUJHO\ VHOI H[SODQDWRU\ but this should involve those shown below: Customer Details (First Name), (Surname), (Email Address), (Contact Number).

Nomination Details: Person or Department being nominated, Space for the nomination / testimonial. Once you have the form sorted you will need to let your customers know about it. It’s best to try and keep things simple. )RU H[DPSOH \RX FDQ KDYH QRPLQDWLRQ details at your point of sale or reception desk. Post a link on your blog, Facebook page and send to any newsletter subscribers you may have. Nomination details and a link should also be added to your website. Do you have a mailing list already? If not it’s a good idea to create one so you can keep your customers up-to-date on everything that’s happening in your business, including your award entries. A good website for list building is:

www.mailchimp.com This website has a free option to get you started. It also has a tool so you can create your own list sign up form to add to your website. Also look at Twitter twitter.com & Facebook facebook.com applications It will automatically put the details of your email campaign on these social networking websites. But one very important point to note is if you are going to hold customer information on a database you must comply with the Data Protection Act, there is a new version GDPR *HQHUDO 'DWD 3URWHFWLRQ 5HJXODWLRQV which you must comply with if you trade with any customer in the European Union, no matter where you are in the ZRUOG RU IDFH EHLQJ ¿QHG To familiarise yourself with this if you’re in the UK, visit the

www.ico.gov.uk Now it’s time to create your all singing and dancing email encouraging your customers to submit nominations for you. A lot of your clients will be very happy to have an avenue to show their appreciation for your product or service.
