Letters from
I am excited to be a part of the Lash Inc. team and look forward to bringing valuable content to the most respected lash magazine in the industry.
I remember hearing about Lash Inc Magazine years ago and being thrilled that we were going to have an industry magazine that had a free flow of information, and inspiration! The first issue didn’t disappoint — and Sugarlash PRO was actually the first company to take out a full-page ad in the magazine.
I look forward to sharing thoughts and ideas that will help you achieve your goals as a lash artist and as a business owner. I excited at the opportunity to work closely with this community and help its growth continue. In this issue of Lash Inc. I will be focusing on networking events in our industry, working smarter not harder (how to raise your prices), what it takes to be an educator, styling clients who have curly lashes, and how to care for yourself as a lash artist.
Fast forward to now, and I have been given the honour of being Editor for Canada! I plan to fill it with beautiful, cutting edge content to bring every lash artist more success! I want to showcase Canadian and North American talent and to bring real value, insights, and ideas for each artist to implement into their lash businesses and help shape the standards worldwide.
I hope you all enjoy!
Thanks to Louise for the opportunity!

Industry Events:
Lashing Out
Across the Globe by Courtney Buhler Editor, Lash Inc. Canada SugarLash PRO
SugarLash PRO was in full flight, taking to the skies in early May, right through mid-June. With a lot of growth and even more jet lag — we were honoured to be in attendance for some of the industry’s most stellar events.
NALA Awards First stop — Toronto — for the NALA Awards Gala and Conference. It united some of the Lash Industry’s top artists, educators, and innovators for a fun weekend of everything lashes. Friday’s informal social gathering of leading industry professionals, and Saturday’s formal awards ceremony saw any preconceived notions of competition go to the wayside. We laughed, toasted, and celebrated each other in all of our unique contributions. The rest of the weekend added a casual and informative aspect with the trade show hall highlighting product, and educational seminars with keynote speakers. Sugarlash PRO was awarded at NALA in the category of Business Curriculum for the Lashpro Accelerator™ Course, and CEO/Founder, Courtney Buhler presented “The Power of Instagram”, and the impact it has in advertising for

your business. Congratulations to all the winners!
Super Yacht Lash Conference Next up was the Super Yacht Lash Conference London, in the UK — held on the stunning Sunborn Yacht Hotel. You’d never know we landed on the heels of the Royal Wedding. When the lash industry comes together - we ARE the royalty! The support and encouragement amongst peers and colleagues is astounding. The conference saw some really amazing presentations from Miranda Tarpey, Petr Lhotský, Michelle Meredith-Rath, Kimber Jaynes, Courtney Buhler, and Loreta Jasilionyte.

LA lash virginities taken — 7! Before the next major event, Sugarlash PRO™ took High Lash Society to the salons of L.A. California. We had the pleasure of working with a fabulous group of influencers and taught them about safe lash extensions — which they had no idea even existed! Can you imagine?
Lash Artist Wars Before heading home, we had one more elite event to take in. Trinidad held its first ever Lash Artist Wars and Sugarlash PRO™ was thrilled to be on the judging panel, alongside Hilaree Brand of My Brand Lashes, and prominent Makeup Artist, William Tommy. There were four waves of Classic Lash Artists, one wave of Volume, and one Fantasy round. Artists and judges had a blast throughout the competition, then took to floating on a yacht in Turtle Bay; noshing on Trinidadian delicacies and celebrating a lively competition!

An Educator
What It Takes To Be by Kimber Jaynes Editor, Lash Inc. USA CEO, Borboleta Beauty
Being a lash educator is becoming a highly sought-after career in our industry. Sure, it looks glamorous; traveling all over the world, building a name for yourself, and doing what you love. What about the behind the scenes that no one tells us about? I have been lucky enough to sit down with two well respected educators in our industry to understand their viewpoints on the pros and cons of being a lash educator.
Hilaree Brand of My Brand Lashes In 2001, I was introduced to eyelash extensions while attending Dallas Roberts Academy. Upon graduation, I was completely in love with lashes and never looked back. From there, my loyal clientele grew. I wanted to be the best I could be for them so I attended Mandalyn Academy where I got my Masters in Aesthetics in 2008. I married my best friend and high school sweetheart whose love and support helped me start My Brand Lashes. In 2009, I set myself apart as a leader in the lash industry by becoming a licensed Cosmetology and Aesthetics instructor. Since we only have one set of eyes, I believe that all lash clients deserve only the best techniques and products. This led me to make business connections with suppliers of some of the best products on the market. Once products matched my skills, I realized that I was only one person and that I was ready to share my knowledge with the beauty industry. What are misconceptions you see about being an educator? That it’s easy, no au contraire! Teaching and learning are a beautiful dance. It must be done together, teacher and student. I could teach the best class in the world but if my student isn’t willing to learn and practice what they have been taught
5 - USA/Canada
or try something new, I can’t be effective. I keep working with my student until I have explained something so that they understand. Like the quote, “we don’t listen to understand, we listen to reply.” Tell me about a time things did not work out and you had no control over that situation: I shipped all products/kits/supplies to our training in Michigan and when we arrived the class was set up but there were no kits. We contacted the post office who said the kits ended up on a different route by accident. They refused to deliver until days after the training, so I tracked down the mailman who had the kits. Thanks to my determination, we had them before the day was done. What was the most valuable lesson you have learned as educator? I wish I could narrow it down to just one. Teaching has offered the lesson of learning about the lash industry at a core level. Why we do what we do, and why it is wise to learn why we do what we do.. Connecting with men and women all over the world has allowed me to experience the beauty industry at a multicultural level which is an invaluable experience. What would you say has contributed to your overall success? My ability to look at where I have failed and how to improve myself to ensure I don’t make the same mistake again. I also love feedback and want to know how I can do it better.
Above: Hilaree Brand
What advice would you give to someone whose goal it is to be a master educator? Learn how to teach what you know. Learn to to be versatile in how you teach a concept or technique. Plenty of people can create amazing lashes and win competitions, but if you cannot explain how you did it, it’s only going to hurt the person who is trying to learn from you. What advice would your future self tell your past self? Just to enjoy. There is a time and place for everything and just because something hasn’t happened as quickly as you wanted it to happen doesn’t mean that something awesome isn’t right around the corner.
Below: Elena Asher
Elena Asher of Lash Makers What are the biggest misconceptions of being an educator? Being a master artist and educator are two very different things. To be an educator you need to know how to lash and educate. Not every lash artist will be a good teacher. What are the most important qualities as an educator? ĵĵ
Experience
ĵĵ
Being well liked
ĵĵ
Do not be afraid to get started, start showing people what you know
How did you become an educator? I fell into it - I had a lot of people reaching out to me on Instagram wanting to be trained. At first it started in my living room just one student here and there. Then the demand grew to multiple people a month to then doing bigger group trainings. Any advice to students looking for the right training? ĵĵ
ĵĵ
Learn from someone whose work you like.
ĵĵ
Any advice to trainers looking to grow in the industry?
ĵĵ
Preparation saves you frustration. Give your students every last detail parking, schedules, what comes in the kit, everything.
ĵĵ
Have fun, laugh with your students - you want them to fall in love with you.
ĵĵ
Do not underprice your classes.
ĵĵ
Don’t freak out, nothing is ever a big deal and you can resolve anything.

Working Smarter,
Not Harder,
in Your Lash Business by Tara Walsh Founder of The Lashpreneur Gone are the days of taking 8, 9, even 10 or more lash clients in a day and working endless nights and weekends. Here is how you can focus on a healthy work/life balance and avoid injury and lash artist burnout: The physical nature of our job and treating our bodies right to ensure the longevity of our time behind the chair as well as staying healthy outside of our lash life. Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, view this as more an investment than self-indulgence. Yoga, acupuncture, and massages are all great ways to take some time for yourself and re-centre after your work day is done. During the workday, find time to step away for 10-15 minutes to clear your head between clients. This will help you stay fresh and prepared as the day goes on. Another important aspect of being a lash business owner is to set your open hours. Coming from a business owner, I know it is hard to set a limit to the number of clients you see a day or what days you are open. It’s important to set these boundaries as you could soon find out that you are suddenly
7 - USA/Canada
working 12 hour days, 7 days a week. After those boundaries are set, if clients request after hours services, you can charge an afterhours fee for services rendered. An afterhours fee will either deter a client from booking outside of your working hours or compensate you for working past your scheduled hours and the effects long hours have on you physically or the inconvenience to your family/life. Beyond setting boundaries for yourself, let’s not forget to set boundaries in pricing. Raising your prices over time is a good way to earn more while working the same. As a #lashboss, running a business is costly and it is important to keep your prices up with the rising costs of business while also paying yourself respectably. Be ok with a handful of current clients dropping off because they can no longer afford the new price and focus on bringing in
new clients at the new price point. You have the opportunity to scale back the hours worked while keeping the same, if not more, income generated into the business, depending on the increase in pricing (we recommend at least a 20% increase). Working smarter, not harder is not just a cliché thing to say to someone struggling to keep up with the demand for their services, it’s a wise business approach to ensuring the longevity of your ability to continue as a lash artist for the long haul. By treating your body just as well as your most coveted pair of volume tweezers, knowing just how many clients you need to reach your goal income, and having a plan to steadily and regularly increase your prices based on the demand for your services will create a healthy work/life balance and help you to avoid lash artist burnout!

Lash Artists
Five Upcoming
to Keep Your Eyes On
The beauty of the Lash Industry, is being witness to lash artists taking to their craft and making it their own. From an eager novice to a skilled pro, these artists are worthy of keeping an eye on!
Samantha Matkovich instagram @samantha.slpro All the way from down under, Sam is inspiring the lash industry on a global scale. Providing a tailored lash look, Samantha is a sought after lash artist and mentor in Melbourne, Australia. Her lash style loves are always changing, but she swears by a beautiful C Curl! Samantha’s Lash Tip: Understand your lashing environment & use glue made for your conditions. Focus on clean isolation and proper base application. Speed will only come with time and constant lashing. Breathe and enjoy the lash journey!
Anna Timonina instagram @lashesbyannanyc Anna has her own studio in the Big Apple, New York City. Anna was born in Russia, originally where the Russian Volume Style came from, and travelled to American to start her cosmetic career. Anna believes that the “power of practicing” is extremely important to achieve perfection in lash styling, mapping and application! From top: Samantha Matkovich
Anna Timonina
Maya Gaspari
Tamara Hami
Sadie Welder
Anna’s Belief: The “natural look” in mapping can be absolutely outstanding, when mastered correctly.
Maya Gaspari instagram @lashedoutmtl Maya hails from Quebec, Canada. Maya recently took her lash business to the next level, by joining the team at A Le Manior where she can take her favourite lengths of 8-11 mm to a style of 3-4D Volume. Maya’s Inspiration: Vannie is definitely my number one inspiration. I look up to her work and it inspires me
to practice and perfect my artistry. I believe that every lash artist inspires each other in some way. It should never be a competition — we all lift each other up.
Tamara Hami instagram @privestudio.slpro Hailing from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada and with years of lashing experience, Tamara suggests scrapping the comparison to other artists; the skillset, training and experience is as unique as the individual. Tamara’s Lashing Tip: Take your time when cultivating a lash map/style for your clients. This can have a huge impact not only on the final result of the set but also on your business. If you create a set that does not enhance your client’s features and creates an issue (such as a droopy eye) they may not return to you, which means a lost client, lost referrals and potentially bad reviews. It’s important you approach each client individually and assess every last detail.
Sadie Welder instagram @lashionistalashes Sadie is a Sugarlash PRO Squad member and Educator, from British Columbia, Canada. Sadie’s lash beginnings found light from a “man cave” in her home, after taking the LashPRO Accelerator™ Course. Now she runs a successful lash lounge in the heart of downtown. Sadie’s Motivation: I love pushing myself outside of the box. I set goals, monthly daily, and weekly. When I hit those goals it motivates me to move forward, and if I don’t — it’s time to readjust. Whether it’s a financial goal or improving your fans — set goals and targets, then go get it.

High Profile ft.
Yuel Loo
When we think of an artist who embodies the high profile lash lifestyle, Yuel Lash Beauty is the first to come to mind. From San Francisco, CA, — A certified lash artist obsessed with beauty, Yuel delivers stunning results! Her infectious energy entices one to take a leisurely nap while getting lashed by a true artist. You’ve been doing lashes for four years and a sugarlash pro brand ambassador for just over a year. What is your favourite, must-have slp product? Onyx adhesive. I know it works. I know when I have to shake the bottle and what temperature and humidity is right. I’ve been offered to try competitor products, but what’s that saying in English — “Don’t fix something that isn’t broken.” Which do you love more - classic or volume? I did 2 years of only Classic, so I practiced my direction and isolation like crazy and I loved it! Now my true love is Volume. I like being challenged and if I can use a word to describe Volume technique, that would be it — CHALLENGING. However it’s so gratifying to see myself grow as an artist after all the hours practicing — now 95% of my appointments are Volume. What is your dream lash client, and the one you try to attract to your salon? Modern and confident women who care for and love themselves, and definitely appreciative of my art. What is your lash business known for? My studio is known for its ambiance and for my unique lash styling. I don’t copycat. I style a beautiful set of lashes for each one my clients according to their natural lashes and facial features. Their lashes are limited edition just like them.
9 - USA/Canada
How does sugarlash pro support your business goals? Two things. First — education. I know Courtney puts her heart and mastermind into everything she does. I took LashPRO Accelerator™ last year, and the modules were so informative. There’s so much to take care of as a business owner, and this course helped me get organized. And second - high-quality products. I’ve been using SLP products for almost 3 years now. As the industry grows, new products are being introduced all the time — and Sugarlash is excellent at leading with trends. Plus, no one can beat the packaging — it’s so chic! What are your hopes for the lash industry? My dream is for people who do lashes, to truly believe they are creating art. Lashes aren’t easy to do, and I love when a client values your craft. The idea of going to one place to have all your beauty services done, seems obsolete to me. No one person has mastered everything, and lashes are a specialized luxury craft.
“My dream is for people who do lashes, to truly believe they are creating art.”
Where do you find inspiration for your lash artistry? It has nothing to do with lashes! I love interior design, so I look through magazines and look for ideas online. It always leaves me feeling inspired. I want my lashes to look like those clean, well balanced and gorgeous spaces that everyone dreams of living in. But, obviously, I also have my lash crushes I look to as well, like @adornlashartistry and @macklash_ebl. What matters most to you in life and how do you make time for it? Family. It’s one of the reasons I moved here from Mexico. I wanted to be closer to my sister. Then I began missing family back home, and I was going to move back — but met my husband and stayed in San Francisco. Time with my husband is important. He and I both have small businesses, so we’re very busy. We have established every other Sunday for ourselves. We go on a small trip to places like Napa, or we stay home in bed watching TV without our phones. What surprises people the most about you? When I tell people that I dropped out of third year law school to do lashes, they think I’m crazy. But, I LOVE doing lashes!
Confessions
Lash
by Vannie Llamas, Crystal Harvey & Yuel Loo There’s nothing like a good laugh or remedy to get through those long lashing days. We reached out to three of our trusted and true, to share some lash anecdotes. What is your guilty lash habit and how does it affect your lashing? Crystal - Coffee 100%. I always wear a mask to protect myself and my clients from sharing more than just good gossip — which for me is coffee, and lots of it! I tell my clients not to drink caffeine before their appointment and then make them smell the aroma of my Starbucks traveller. Sorry... Not sorry? Vannie - Talking to a client while doing her lashes! I love interacting with my clients, especially with those who are extremely chatty. But the biggest downfall is that it can slow me down unknowingly. Sometimes I just tell my clients that I love them but it’s time to sleep and let me get to work. What is the craziest thing a client has done and how did you manage it? Crystal - This wasn’t directly to my client but when I was working in an open concept lash studio the client next to me had her boyfriend rub her feet during her lash fill. At the time I remember thinking many different things like “What is the other lash artist thinking?”, “Can she isolate properly with the movement from the toe pulls?”, “Does the lady have bad bunions?”, “This is the possibly the sweetest thing ever (not at all crazy)”, “Could her boyfriend have time to rub my feet maybe?”, “Will he go wash his hands after?”, “Should someone offer him lotion at least????” After she left we agreed that the studio would have a no friend/boyfriend by the bedside policy as we never intended to offer head to toe services. Socks on please and leave your bf in the car! Yuel - It was a first-time client, and she was super relaxed and sweet. I suggested she make herself comfortable
while I stepped out of the room to grab supplies. To my surprise, when I returned, she was naked on the bed! At first, I didn't know how to react, but my face gave me away and she saw my embarrassment. She said, “Don't worry hun. Plenty of people have seen my breasts before. I’m just more comfortable without clothes.” She began falling asleep before I could even put her eye pads on, so I suggested she cover herself, so she wouldn’t catch a chill. She happily agreed, and I began to lash. Midway through her application, she was overheating and guess what...BOOBS OUT AGAIN! It was a great opportunity for me to focus on my lashing speed! Vannie - I was finishing up with one of my clients and she knew her appointment was coming to a finish as I was nanomisting — the final step to curing those extensions. She began to stretch and by natural reflex with her eyes still closed, she turned her head to the side and her hair went straight into my glue! I was mortified! She didn’t realize it at first, but It took us a good three seconds to react and process what had just happened before she blurted, “OMG, did I just…?”. I quickly applied adhesive remover and let it sit for a LONG time. Let me tell you, it’s much harder to get a chunk of glue out of someone’s hair, than it is getting adhered extensions off with the remover! What is your most embarrassing lash moment? Crystal - I used to always use a full exercise ball for a chair to lash clients and I would love to say only one time did I lose my centre of balance, but there has been more free-falling, lifeflashing, catch-me-Susan-this-is--theend moments to be able to count. That's probably the top of my embarrassment mountain!
went fully blind. I decided to take her to work for couple weeks, so she wouldn’t go crashing into walls if left alone. She’s little, but snores like a 70-yearold grandpa! I was constantly kicking her bed at least 10 times per client! Although my clients thought she was cute and loved her, I was embarrassed and felt so unprofessional. Even today some of my girls call their lash nap a “Romi nap”. What's the juiciest story you've heard from a client? Yuel - Some of my clients have become close friends, and others really do think I’m a psychologist. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it all! From stories that end under the sheets, Tinder dates, innocent lies at work (like saying they’re at a doctor’s appointment, while getting lashed by me), to really heart touching experiences. And, to all those lash clients of mine — your secrets are safe with me! Do you have any secret remedies? Yuel - Each one of my clients knows “The Mexican Lash Remedy”. Although I’m extremely careful during application, some clients can still be sensitive to the adhesive fumes, or pads can shift with chatty gals, resulting in red or sore eyes. After application, I always suggest to cold brew chamomile tea and use it as non-stinging eye drops. Chamomile has been used to relieve redness, inflammation, and irritation. It works wonders!
Do you have a crazy lash story to tell? Remedy to feature? We would love to hear from you! Email lashinc@sugarlashpro. com

Diversify your
Lash Services
with Lash Lift
Whether you’re a budding lash artist or a seasoned pro, adding the Lash Lift is the service to add to your salon menu. This fast-growing trend is all the rage. You can get this super affordable course under your lash belt in less than four hours — making a wise investment for your business.
Diversify Your Menu
Attract New & Male Clientele
Lash Lifts add variety to your lash menu and can increase your revenue if you know exactly how to sell it, and who to sell it to. This service is so customer friendly, you’re able to accommodate almost anyone. It’s extremely lowmaintenance and time-friendly.
A client with an extreme case of downward facing lashes can benefit from a Lash Lift, as it will curl and lift the lashes out of the client’s field of vision. Not only will she have nicely curled lashes, but those lashes will no longer be bothersome… and this service is a popular one among men also for this reason! When this same client is wanting extensions, the natural angle of her lashes can be too severe, dragging the extension down. The Lash Lift can act as a nice support and neutralize that downward pull. Rather than extensions being dragged down with the straight lashes, the curl will lift them upwards, making them more visible.
Lash extensions aren’t for everyone — but a lift? You bet your bottom lashes!
Retain Allergic Clients There’s still hope for clients with allergies to lash extensions, who can no longer wear any type of extensions regardless of the adhesive. You don’t have to lose them completely. Although, it doesn't give added volume, this can definitely give the illusion of longer lashes. When combined with mascara, the newly lifted lashes will make a huge impact.
11 - USA/Canada
Some prefer going “au naturel” and have decided that extensions aren’t for them. However, someone who still wants that little extra lash glam is definitely a potential client for a lash lift. Eliminating the need to continuously bend their lashes with a curler on a daily basis.
Lash Lift by Vannie Llamas, using the CurlPerfect™ Lash Lift Kit
Lash Correction Those with untamable lashes may be running to your salon for this treatment! The Lash Lift can also be used as a corrective service for wild and unruly lashes. Simply implement your skills to straighten and rearrange the direction of the natural lashes while using the solution to calm them down. Clients will finally have the polished and tailored lash look made for mascara! Lash lifting is a simple service anyone can enjoy — eliminating problematic lashes, keeping it low maintenance, and increasing your profits. This express treatment can be done in under an hour even with an added tint — leaving more time for additional bookings!
You can get lash lifting products and courses from Ellebana, Sugarlash PRO, and Yumi
Curly Lashes
Styling
by Kalie Belanger Siren and Proper Studio When I was in the early years of being a lash artist, I came across my first client with very curly natural lashes. As soon as she closed her eyes the panic set in, “How do I even begin to separate these? That lash just pushed my fan right off like it’s been doing two-a-days at the gym. Oh, grant me mercy.” By the end of the full set I was proud at what I had accomplished but frustrated at how unprepared I had felt. All I could think about that night was how could I make this easier in the future, so here are some helpful tips I’ve learned over the years in dealing with curly lashes.
The best way to tackle a client with very curly natural lashes is to work one lash at a time, layer by layer. It’s very easy to get lost in the curly, forest of lashes. By working one lash at a time, you are able to move the completed lashes out of the way and have a clean path to your next lash. This is most efficient because you aren’t searching for a free natural lash; it’s the next one waiting in line! The tips of the natural lash and angle of the curl can make it quite difficult to get the extension on securely and properly. Don’t be afraid to approach the lash from different angles by moving your chair or adjusting your clients head. You can manipulate the eyelid by applying medical tape to the middle of the lid and gently pulling to the outside. This separates the lashes and makes them much easier to get to. Once you’re done taping, I find applying lashes from the bottom or the side of the
natural lash helps tremendously. When done properly, this process makes the application process seamless and helps blend the lashes with the extensions. While on the topic of blending, one of my favourite styling tips is to mix curls throughout the lash line. By using different curls, it creates a lot of texture and helps camouflage the curly natural lashes. If you haven’t tried this, it’s a must! This combined with applying from the bottom or side will take your curly lash game to a whole new level. My best tip overall would be to take your time. You should always give your client 110%, especially your more challenging ones. Even if that means slowing down a little to make sure your getting a solid application. I know it’s easy to get flustered in the moment but take a deep breath and remember these tips. You’ve got this!

Tell me how long you’ve been lashing and how did you decide that this was the career path for you? The Lash Maven: I began lashing three and a half years ago. Prior to becoming a lash tech I was a makeup artist for ten years. While doing makeup, I became obsessed with lashes and realised they were really the best part of makeup application. So, when I started hearing how people were getting lash extensions became just as with finding out as much as possible and decided to get them done on myself. I asked my tech questions on how to become trained and within a month, I signed up for a class. After completing the course, I realised that this was going to be hard and wasn’t something that could be mastered overnight. As a perfectionist, I was determined to be the best I could possibly be. I decided to join groups online, connected with people on

Instagram, researched my heart out, and there was lots of trial and error. It took me a solid 2-3 months to feel confident enough to start charging clients for my work. Before that, I was lashing friends and family just to get the practice in. LIC: What do you love most about the industry, and where do you find challenges? TLM: I love the sisterhood we have in the industry. For the most part, everyone uplifts and supports each other. I love that we are a small community within a global industry. I love meeting up with everyone at lash conferences, competitions, and events! It’s like “AHHHHH these are my people, I love these girls and guys!” What I find the most challenging about the industry are lash techs who live in a scarcity mindset. The ones who view everyone else as their competition, and don’t join or contribute to moving the industry forward. If we all banded together and set the high standards for our services, we would be in a much better place. LIC: Who and what gives you inspiration? Please name names! TLM: Aesthetically, I appreciate anything clean, crisp and sexy. When it comes to people — it’s those amazing companies who started out small — chased a dream — and pushed our industry forward. Some I’ve trained with, some I’ve partnered with, and some I just admire from afar. In no particular order, Courtney Buhler, Sugarlash PRO; Kimber Jaynes, Borboleta Beauty; Jill Heijligers-
Above: The Lash Maven’s lash work.
Peloquin, Lash FX; Irina Levchuk; Sadie Welder, Lashionista Lashes; Kyla Kidd; Levi Shepard from NALA — are all amongst my lash idols. LIC: What would be something people are surprised to learn about you? TLM: Many are surprised to learn that I have four kids! I always knew I wanted to marry young and have a big family. I married at 21 years of age and had my first child that same year. My husband and I have four kids, 13, 11, 5, and 2. Being a business owner with a high volume studio, employees, and travel — life is a bit crazy to say the least. I’m very fortunate that my husband picks up the slack on those days. LIC: What bit of advice do you have to offer emerging lash artists? TLM: It’s really a great time to be part of the lash industry. As it continues to grow, the education gets better and better, and the bar is being set higher and higher. My advice to all new lash techs is to keep your standards high. Do NOT undercut our market, price your services accordingly as this is a hard skill to master, and you’ve earned your stripes. Put in the work. This doesn’t come easy. Practice. Practice. Practice — then when you think you’re the best, take another class and practice some more.

Styling
Lash
When we talk about style, never set limitations on where it can take us. However, when we focus on styling, we are creating the narrative to a desired result. Regardless, of whether you give it creative names, or keep it covertly written in numeric code — there is a distinct difference between custom styled lashes, and one size fits all! To achieve a particular lash-style, you first need to understand which one you are going to create and why. You will never go wrong when working towards a natural balance — and for this, basic standards apply. We measure the entire eye area and compare over all uniqueness of each face shape, then we can explain their tailored ‘lashformation’. Rich texture is naturally present before we begin any application. By examining the natural lashes, you can identify multiple length, thickness, and curl that each client was born with. Using knowledge of weight and visibility to enhance this natural texture, you can maximize your clients lash line and overall wear time.
Above from left to right: Perfectly styled lashes
Eye plane
Eye Shape
Even-Set: distance between eyes in equal to length on one eye. Wide-Set: distance between eyes longer then length of one eye. Narrow-Set: distance between eyes in shorter than the length of one eye.
Step 2. (Plane) Measure the horizontal between inner and outer corners.
For styling your clients lash line you want to determine the shape, plane, and set of the eyes. Create balance within any set by choosing the correct style map.
Step 1. (Set)
Measure the distance of one eye and compare to the width between both eyes.
Below: Eye Set
Even Plane: inner and outer corners lay on an even plan. Ascending Plane: outer corner sits higher than the inner corner. Descending Plane: outer corner sits lower than the inner corner.
Step 3. (Shape) Measure the width to height ratio. Round: even width and height Almond: double the width then height Exotic: more than double the width than height. Once you have the set, plane, and shape choose your style to create balance.
Set Wide set: Move the longest area of extensions inward to create the illusion there is less space between the eyes. Close set: a kitten or cat eye styling will work to pull the eyes apart and make them look more balanced.
Even: no corrective work to be done.
Plane Ascending plane: can support more length to the outer eye without looking “droopy” or closed off due to the natural height of the outer eye. Descending plane: bring length to the mid eye (highest point of the curve) and taper down drastically towards the outer eye — this will give the effect the eye is tilted inwards and look more even planed. Even plane: work with the natural arch point of the brow and a more natural shape here with length swept across the mid/outer and tapered both inside and outside eye.
Shape Round: the only shape that needs extreme caution with is round. Too much curl or height will make them look shocked/surprised 24/7.Use B curl only and bring length towards the outer eye and away from mid eye to elongate the round shape into more of an almond. Hooded: we need lift on hooded eyes to cover the heavy lid and make them look refreshed! Use an L or L+ curl (mix with a c curl for softness) to go over the hood crease. There are so many things to know when it comes to styling — and this is just a taste! Other things to take into account are facial shape, bone structure, brows, and more to determine the ultimate styling. If you’re unsure about your styling skills, enroll in a styling course!

How To Take
Awesome P hotos
for Instagram
With ever-growing interest in photo and video content, platforms like Instagram are the perfect way to get your work seen for free. The only catch? You’re not the only one trying to get noticed. The average social media user spends around 2 hours per day on Instagram, and it’s no wonder why. With over 800 million monthly users the social market is saturated with content. Luckily for you, your current and future clients are interested in beautiful lash sets, and the best way to attract them to your business is with curated, carefully shot lash photos. When users stumble across your photos in a hashtag search, or through your website, do they see a cohesive colour scheme? Sharp lash photos with clean backgrounds? Or do they see a muddle of colours and lighting that just don’t seem to jive? Your Instagram wall may be a potential client’s first impression of your business, so it better look bomb.
Lighten Up The key to a beautiful and clear lash photo is good lighting. Adequate lighting not only illuminates each perfectly extended lash, it helps your camera focus and decreases graininess in your photos. Light brightens up dull complexions, and creates greater contrast between the skin and lashes, creating definition in the lash line. Nail the catch light in the pupil for bonus points.
Vary Depth And Angles While your subject matter isn’t likely to change too much, playing around with depths and angles adds a different element of artistry that your clients will be happy to see. Aside from adding interest to your lash photos, varying your shots shows your clients that you’re not only a technically proficient lash tech—you’re an artist with an eye for style.
Tidy Up After spending hours on your client’s lash set, setting up your background, shot, and perfecting your catch light, the last thing you want is a stray lash violating your photo. Before you snap your perfect shot, tidy up any stray lashes, and give your set a good brush— you want your followers to see your work at its best. PRO Tip: A lot of artists forget about their client’s eyebrows. During your appointment your hands rest on your client’s brows, disturbing the careful groom they came in with. Before you snap your photo, do your client, and your Instagram wall a favour, and brush the brows.
Pick a Background
Get Up Close and Personal
Whether you snap your lash photos while your client is still lying down, or you have them stand up against a clean wall post-mist, you should aim for a tidy background that matches your brand’s colour scheme and overall style.
It might feel a bit awkward holding your phone inches from your client’s face but moving your camera closer to your subject—rather than zooming—will get you a clearer photo every single time. The science: “When you zoom, you decrease the resolution by enlarging the pixels,” says photographer Aaron Pedersen. Your photos will become pixelated, and you’ll lose the definition you need to see the lashes.

Don’t Over-Edit
The number one problem we see with lash photos is over-editing. Your clients’ skin should never look blurry, and a little unevenness never hurt anybody. It’s one thing to erase a blemish, or liven up a tired complexion, but your lash photos should look as natural as possible. If your client has a lot of redness, or a breakout they don’t want the world to see, go for a close-up on the eye instead. When it comes to editing, play around with brightness, contrast, and shadows just enough to help your photos look their best.
Utilize The Grid VSCO, Later, PLANN and other thirdparty Instagram apps let you see your photos in a grid before you post them. This way you can check that your photo looks good on your wall before you actually publish it there. Notice how your photo looks with the one beside it and below it. If it fits the overall feel and style of your wall, awesome. Post it! If it’s a bit off, no worries. Tweak your editing or filter level until it looks just right. If it still doesn’t fit, keep it for your own records, but leave it off the wall. Your business Instagram page isn’t just photo storage, it’s free marketing. So save it for your best work and your best shots, and let the follows roll in.

Finding
Your Balance by Kimber Jaynes Editor, Lash Inc. USA CEO, Borboleta Beauty
The demand for lashes could keep any lash artist slammed and as a lash artist, it’s important to know what your limits are and when to give yourself a break. When I was lashing full time, I remember my days flying by and at the end of the day I would forget if I had managed to eat or drink. One day I realised that working from sunrise to sunset was not fulfilling and I was struggling to enjoy my job. After this realisation I started to pay attention to the value of my time and started investing in myself, my personal relationships, my health, and making better business investments like hiring an assistant to help me at work. Here are a few tips for you to enjoy your time working, in taking time for yourself, and how to find a healthy work/life balance. After all, you have made it this far and have clients beating down your door - it’s time for you to take control of your business and start enjoying all that hard work! ĵĵ
ĵĵ
Planning ahead is key - at the beginning of each week map out your schedule and set limits. Schedule self-care sessions like massages, acupuncture, or lunches with friends. Treat these times just as you would a scheduled client and do not move them to accommodate a last-minute client. Make sure you plan for these appointments and don’t modify that plan for anyone else but yourself. Our physical and mental health as lash artists is crucial and we only have so much capacity that we can use in a single day. Be careful not to stretch yourself so thin that you begin to resent your clients and your career choice. Here are a few tips on how you can continue to be a lash artist over years of wear and tear on your mind and body.

»»
Charge what you are worth and don’t overbook your day
»»
Use an online booking service so your clients don’t contact your personal phone
»»
ĵĵ
Set boundaries with your clients - don't be late, cancellation policy, clean lashes policy, etc.
»»
Don’t take on your clients’ emotional stress - Change the subject nicely or start off their appointment by suggesting they listen to headphones so you can concentrate
»»
Don’t gossip - Save your reputation of being the gossip salon and instead discuss ideas, goals, and positive things happening in life
Allow yourself to take a vacation every quarter, and remember, it doesn’t have to be expensive. It could be a vacation from work where you don’t leave town - a staycation. This will allow you to reconnect with yourself and your goals. I highly suggest you plan at least one vacation a year, it will help you find yourself and build relationships with your friends and family. A book that I recently discovered reminded me why it is so important to take these breaks. I suggest reading “The Power of Having Fun” by Dave Crenshaw. I
found it to be an inspiring read, talking about taking meaningful vacations and what it can do for us in the long run. ĵĵ
ĵĵ
I have been able to travel a lot the last few years because of work, here are just a few places I suggest for your next vacation that won’t break the bank: »»
Yosemite National California
»»
Nashville, Tennessee
»»
Santa Monica, California
»»
Honolulu, Hawaii
Park,
Lastly, set a goal to splurge on a major gift for yourself. This could be a handbag that you have had your eyes on, the shoes you have always wanted, or even re-furnish a room in your house. Whatever it is, make sure you set up an account for this and contribute a portion of your earnings bi-month or monthly. I remember my very first splurge was a Balenciaga handbag. I saved for the bag for an entire year and set a certain amount aside each month until I had enough to make my purchase. I still have that bag today and love it and is a constant reminder that hard work pays off.
We all have this amazing gift - it’s called time and it is the most valuable thing we have. Spend your time working hard and playing hard. You need balance in both areas to live a fulfilled life and don’t want to look back years from now to say all you did was work. Life is meant to be enjoyed and our careers are a way we can reach our goals and help us enjoy the hard work we put in every day.

Creating Seasonal
To Enhance Your Social Media by Michelle Meredith-Rath Lash Inc. Senior Journalist Sinful Lashes Keeping your social media fresh and crisp is no mean feat. One way which worked well for me is to create art to celebrate the things that you and your followers are passionate about. You could use various themes such as holidays, festivals, social issues, or even just celebrate the season - the possibilities are endless. Colourful, themed art keeps your followers engaged, and can also bring a whole new clientele through your doors – people love pictures. Love Them or Hate Them?
Eyepatches:
by Hanna Putjato
Lash Inc. Senior Journalist CEO, London Lash Pro
The application of eyepatches can sometimes be tricky. Whether you are an experienced lash technician or a complete beginner, you should always follow these simple rules: ĵĵ
Use protein remover pads to wipe the eye area from any oils to ensure patches stick to the skin well. Eyepatches will not stick to oily skin properly.
ĵĵ
Use one pair of eyepatches per client and dispose them after the use
ĵĵ
Apply the eyepatches 1-2 mm below the waterline and cover the bottom lashes
ĵĵ
Adjust the eyepatches after your client has closed her eyes and secure the placement of patches with micropore tape if needed
ĵĵ
If any baby lashes pop out, cover them with micropore tape
But even if you follow all eyepatch application rules, you can still struggle sometimes. Problem 1: Client’s bottom lashes are so strong and springy that they are popping out of the eyepatches Solution: place the eyepatches under the bottom Lashes and apply micropore tape on the top - all natural lashes will be “sandwiched” between the tape and eyepatches and will stay in place until the end of the treatment. Please make sure you stick the micropore tape to the back of the hand first, so it becomes less sticky. Otherwise you might find difficult to remove the tape after the treatment.
Problem 2: You have placed the eyepatches and they now look very comfortable for you and you are ready to start the lash application. Shortly after you start the treatment, your clients eyes start watering. Solution: Before you start the treatment, lift the top eyelid up and check that the eyepatches are not touching your client’s eyes or the waterline. If eyepatches are touching the eyeball or the waterline, then it may irritate your client’s eyes, causing them to water and resulting with redness at the end of the treatment. Problem 3: The gel always plumps out and sticks to your client’s eyes Solution: This is the after effect of the eyepatches applied too close your client’s eyes - it will scratch the eye inside. Make sure you check that the eyepatches are not touching the eyeballs of your client by lifting up the eyelid before starting the application. Problem 4: You can’t see the lashes in the outer corner as they are bent under the eyepatches Solution: In order to get the lashes out from underneath the eyepatch, simply peel the patches up and move them down without pulling the eyelid down. You can also use the help of tweezers to gently pull the lashes out from under the eyepatch.

Lash Debutant
The
by Ravi Sagoo Men's Style Editor
I’ve just had my first brush with the International Lash Industry as this year’s host for The Lash Events UK Conference 2018. Similar to the ‘debutante’ culture across many societies where the ball gown takes centre stage, I too felt that my attire should make a ‘lashing’ impact, and those of you in attendance may have noticed I donned my ‘millennial’ style kilt. I did so for many reasons, but in the main to celebrate our International Editor Louise Tierney’s Scottish Roots in this truly global industry. I first met Louise a few years ago at our former alma mater, Glasgow Caledonian University, where we were both invited to speak about our career journey. I hail from a presenter/journalist background with the BBC, and it was the first time I had come across the Lash Industry – bar the time I bought some strip lashes for Halloween as I tried to pull off a Bollywood look! What sparked my interest into this ‘alien’ industry is how Louise grew her business and brand from Glasgow, my home city. I remember Louise talking passionately about the ideas that came

I energised this word. In our career path we are not guaranteed instant success and we will all fail or have challenges at some stage. Some of these challenges take place away from our office and work; from health issues, to relationships, love and bereavement.
to her whilst sitting on a train. This led her acting upon her ideas right there and then via her laptop. She energised me away from the ‘media bubble’ which us luvvies so often tend to vacuum ourselves in.
It is imperative to allow ourselves time, space and balance. The point I was making to the students in attendance was to embrace such times in one’s career and use it as fuel, be it a rejection letter or email, and I took copies of my own rejection letters and emails to show the students.
I too spoke about my career path, across Radio and Television and simply offered an honest and brutal account of my career to date. I coupled this with some open and honest sub narratives from life’s journey, and I candidly spoke about my success, what inspired me, and the ‘F’ word.
After meeting Louise at this event, we met up for coffee (and cake!) in Glasgow and she suggested I could host one of her events in the future, explaining the foundations behind the UK Lash Conference and what it would entail.
‘Failure’.
I was still somewhat clueless at this stage, but signed up immediately, it’s the extrovert within me.
Broadcasting conveys the importance of networking at such events and conferences. Being a natural talker and extrovert I find networking and breaking the ice easy. I appreciate for others this may not be the case; of course I get nervous, but I use my platform as a Host/Presenter (and my Kilt!) to shield such nerves and turn it on its head, making it work for me. If Louise and I hadn’t networked, the chances are I would never have had the opportunity to work in the lash industry. In my experience nobody is that important that they won’t speak to you or give you some time at such an event, regardless of what industry you are in. Never be afraid to approach industry leaders, mentors or a brand/company you are trying to connect with. If I hadn’t employed a ‘gallus’ (to use a good Glaswegian word) attitude I would be working behind the scenes in the media as opposed to being on air. Another reason I wore my Kilt at UK Lash Events 2018 was it simply draws an audience’s attention and people engage with me over it. So wear something that you feel confident in to express your own unique energy and style. If you are a naturally shy person and find the networking side somewhat challenging, drop an email to the person or contact you are trying to connect with beforehand. A simple introduction and request a quick five minutes of their time at the conference. People are generally nice (well most of the time!) and respond, sometimes not immediately but eventually. Networking is essential as a business tool but is doesn’t stop there; you can make some genuine and lasting

friendships. I’m lucky to say that Louise and I became colleagues as result of our business networking; not only do we engage on ideas around the lash industry (as I take up the mantle of Men’s Style Editor for Lash Inc. International), we are also firm friends. Not quite sure how our Editor in Chief might edit that last line I have just written!
Below: The Scottish sun bringing out the best in Ravi's new look
Onto the actual UK Lash Events 2018 itself, I write this a few weeks on from the conference in May. I’m raising a cheeky smile to myself as I’m still buzzing from Super Yacht! From preproduction between Glasgow and London, meeting UK Lash Events members for the first time, hosting and engaging with such an amazing array of talented delegates and guest speakers, forging genuine relationships, having very little sleep and sharing a hotel room with our lead designer Andi (who I had only met on the Friday!) to the pace and energy of it all! I found it accelerated me professionally and personally. I’ve learnt a lot from Louise so far about the industry and the learning curve continues. I took a lot away from Guest Speaker talks and engaging with them alongside delegates at the conference. There are many sub narratives and
levels in this industry, and this has only further fuelled my interest to engage some more. With open invites from new friends from Denmark, Sweden, Latvia, USA et al and vice versa including a round or two of Golf on Scotland’s lush courses with Borboleta’s lovely Kimber and Craig planned, my lash journey is set to continue… Just like any method actor worth their salt, I embraced the conference with a Lash Lift. I’ve never been shy to embrace fashion and beauty culture that’s perhaps perceived as more ‘metro’ than ‘hetero’ and I truly felt a million dollars post treatment! I loved the craft, technique and artistry that goes into such a treatment. The look it gave my eyes was uplifting, I felt it accentuated my natural lines and the actual spread of my lashes gave me a lot of confidence. This, coupled with borrowing Louise’s mascara in London, meant I was all set for hosting in London!
I now look forward to my next experience – lash extensions for men!

Look in the Mirror:
That’s Your Competition by Katie Gross
Lash Inc. Senior Journalist The Lash Artist Box I’ve been in the beauty industry for the past fifteen years, and I like to think I’ve learned a thing or two. I recognise how competitive it can be and how we must stay focused on our goals. Our industry is full of competition. We have competitors amongst local businesses who seem to be constantly engaged in the art of one-up man ship. Our suppliers are competing against each other for our attention with bigger, better, bolder products. You might run a monthly competition within your salon amongst employees, for who can sell the most. This month’s magazine is focused on competitions, so we are going to look at your biggest competition: YOU. Winning requires awareness, discipline, and a willingness to experiment and take risks.
35 - Lashes
When you look at your business output, are you happy with the results, or do you have room for improvement? Do you think you are limiting yourself? If you want to succeed in any business, you have to give it 100%. Competing with others in a friendly manner is a great way to build on your strengths and I implore you to step out of your comfort zone and sign up for a competition. The other competitors will push you to achieve, but the only person you should try to better is the person you were yesterday.
Above: Katie, meet Katie.
Why not turn your biggest challenge into a personal competition where winner takes all? After analysing my own business, I decided to work on regular posting to my social media platforms and scheduling the time in my day to do so. I enrolled in an online course, watched tutorials, read books, and took notes on how to make the most of my social media presence. If you find yourself overwhelmed by managing your social media, there are companies who can do this for you, such as Hootsuite, Buffer and Social Oomph. They will post across all the popular platforms and you can include photos of your work, your lash space, your knowledge of the industry, funny stories; the sky is the limit, so
have fun with it. If you aren’t a little different from your competition, you’re in trouble. We’ve all heard the old saying, “Time is money!” This certainly rings true in the lash industry - the quicker we work, the more money we make as we can book more clients in. Is YOUR speed where it needs to be to produce quality work in a certain amount of time? It’s a good idea to work against yourself by timing your lash sets, using the timer on your phone. If you could reduce the time it takes for a full set of lashes by 10% over the course of a week or a month, what would that look like for you? Think about what you could do with that extra time. You could add in another client, work on your social media, or continue to build your lash business.

What are your retail goals? Retail should be a must, not an option. Retail means more money for you, and can increase your credibility amongst your clients. Research has found that if a guest purchases two retail products from you, there is 60% chance they will return. If that same client purchases just one product, there is a 30% chance she will return, however, if you didn’t talk to her about the product, there is just a 10% chance she will return. The biggest issue people have that prevents them winning is lack of belief in themselves. A belief is a choice, and what you think about you bring about – if you were to replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you will begin to expect and achieve positive outcomes. You are the competition, you set the standard, so let go of your fears, believe in yourself, and go for it! Those who win are those who think they can.

Enchanted's
Hidden Treasure by Kelly Storer

Isabella completed a professional eyelash extension course with Kelly Storer the owner of Enchanted Spa in Joondalup. Kelly customised the course around Isabella’s requirements, so she could progress at a pace her body could cope with, so instead of two full days they spread the course over four half days. Prior to contacting Enchanted Spa, Isabella had tried contacting many other course operators who were not flexible with their course options. Excited by her new-found passion for lash artistry, Bella went on to complete the advanced Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions course with welcomed modified training options. Not only did Bella discover her passion and artistic flair for eyelash extensions, but she knew she had chosen the right pathway in life. Bella adores the individual attention to detail she can offer her clients and in return they reward her in repeat business.

My Journey
A Look at
by Jessika Aude Gautier Lash Inc. Senior Journalist CEO, World Beauty University
I was introduced to eyelash extensions in my early twenties when I was a model for Bikini Village. Their lash artist sat me down on a chair, tilted my head back and started lashing me. The result was absolutely stunning, and I was immediately hooked - how wonderful, lashes looking amazing at all times without any mascara. I had a very lucrative career in food and beverage at the time but lashes always stayed in the back of my mind. I finally decided to get certified, just out of curiosity - who would have known where this would have lead me. I absolutely fell in love with lashing, it is my passion. As a perfectionist, I wanted to know everything there was to know about lashes, so I travelled worldwide to attend master classes and conferences in order to offer my clients the best. I was lashing twelve hours a day, seven days a week. I dedicated every hour of the day to mastering my craft. Testing and experimenting on clients, I played with curls, thicknesses, lengths, textures and colours. My wish was to enhance my client’s natural beauty, without making them look too obvious. I invented my own style when it came to classic, and later on transferred it to Hybrid and Volume. In every single set I made, I wanted it to be the most beautiful in the world, to make my clients look amazing.
Above: Every eye is different. Work the eyes in front of you
I developed my own techniques and lash designs, and soon enough people were asking me to train them and to provide them with lash products.
my multi-coloured Lash Map technique, now taught in all our training centres. It’s important to take the time to create a special set of lashes for a specific client, according to their eye shape, age, style, face, natural lashes, how many layers of lashes they have, etc. Personally, I like to style very intense sets for photo shoots and more natural sets for every day.
I founded Star L ashes and Distributions STAR Lashes, our online store, to provide high-quality products worldwide.
Dare to Be Different! Play around; There are so many styles and different ways to define your work. Most technicians stick to the basics, but you don’t have to follow the trends and do what everybody else is doing in order to be successful.
A few years later, I founded World Beauty University. We now offer services and training in classic lashes, volume lashes, lash lifts, micro blading, threading, sugar wax, scalp micro pigmentation, nails and teeth whitening.
It’s important to personalise your work in order to stand out. Don’t be scared to try different things to find out what you like, what looks good, and what you’re good at.
It has been an amazing journey that took me to Russia, Rome, London, Prague, Paris, Hong Kong, China, Tokyo, Australia, Mexico and many beautiful states in the USA. Every place I went, I made great friends and business opportunities.

After Yourself
Looking
by Stefani Altieri
Lash Inc. Senior Journalist Stella Lash My name is Stefani Altieri. I am an entrepreneur, single mom of an incredible 14-year-old son, four dogs, I live in sunny California and I am the founder of Stella Lash. My life journey has been filled with ups and downs and all arounds, and through it all, what has remained true is my passion for love, wellness, and beauty from within. I am inspired by making a difference in someone else’s life. This year I learned one of the most rewarding life lessons; How to selfheal. Over the past few years, life has been a gigantic roller coaster. My ride has meant changing the way I run my business, moving from to Southern California; losing my number one cheerleader, my dad; helping my son adapt to his new environment; and dealing with my own stress and anxiety. It has not been easy! The fear was setting in all around me. Every person on this planet struggles with some type of fear, and that is what keeps us from moving ahead. We allow ourselves to let fear control our thoughts and emotions. Exorcising that fear can help you
39 - Lashes
succeed – if you don’t take that risk, you will never reach your goals. We have to face our fears, look them in the eye and doing that is terrifying. Failure isn’t easy either. Everyone reaches a point in their life where they can either give up or keep fighting. I am a fighter! Throughout the years I have been battled addiction, ADHD, and other complex health issues which all require that I take several different medications. The most rattling experience of my life is when I felt like I was having a heart attack. I called 911 and was rushed to the hospital with my blood pressure
Above: Tranquillity is essential to your health
reading 220/137. It turned out that what I was experiencing was an anxiety attack. Anxiety is scary! I had tingling in my left arm for about a month, starting from the Vegas Trade show in June 2017. Fast forward to the day I called 911, it literally felt like my left breast was being squeezed so hard that it was going to burst - a huge wake up call. At the same time, I moved my business 2,400 miles away, with visions of starting fresh. I didn’t understand how hard it would be to trust the business would continue to grow with the same quality and efficiency as when I was in sole charge. This was change that I wasn’t prepared for. As a result of this, my body started breaking down with stress and anxiety.
Immediately, I developed psoriasis and eczema, hives and rashes appeared up and down the sides of my whole upper torso, and I experienced hot flashes that made me think I must be going through early menopause, one doctor diagnosed this as thyroid dysfunction.
Once I stepped into my strengths, the shift started to happen. I realised that I have the power within myself to change. I changed my mindset from negative to positive and connected with my happy, loving soul, and not only did I start finding bigger and better solutions for my business but I also found it within my personal health.
I couldn’t understand what was happening because just a few months ago, I was finally feeling the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever felt. I thought I had most of it worked out, after all, I was moving to sunny Southern California.
I surrendered to a healthier way of life, starting small, and changed my entire diet. I cut out processed sugars and foods and eliminated the bottle of wine I drank each night.
What I didn’t anticipate, however, was my nervous system responding to the stress from this sudden change, and I had to go back to the drawing board.
Once I had stopped the self-judgement and graced myself with love, then my world opened up in ways beyond my dreams.
This is where my strengths came in - I flourish in finding solutions to problems and am good at testing my limits. I research and experiment to the very last, and this is how I developed my own line. This really works in anything that you do, not just within the Lash Industry.
I started to manifest my visualisations and started to think about what was truly important.
I always research and seek the best quality, unfortunately you have to go through quite a bit of quantity to figure it out where the best quality to be found.
Below: Stefani today
I have spent so much of my life in the beauty industry, developing innovative products, ideas and solutions. We are all broken in some way. I want to make an impact in this industry and help people step into their overall wellness. I want to see them step in their whole beauty, which only comes from within. Nicole Bray is the one person who has made such an amazing positive impact on my journey, helping me tune into my inner self. Nicole is an expert in being mindful and connecting within yourself on a spiritual level. She truly has helped me find my inner Goddess, as she guides me through yoga, meditation, mindful awareness, and spiritually. Together, we have created a Wellness/ Educational three day lash retreat. The retreats will consist of high vibrational foods, lash education, and overall mind, body, soul transformation. “I am super grateful to be working with Stefani and her visions of filling the planet with more Love, Light, and Creativity. Her passion is so inspiring and beautiful to witness. I look forward to working in her retreats. Each one of us feels big and small moments of disconnection to our own inner wisdom. We encounter trauma and miracles throughout our life
that give us opportunity to step into our life force energy to feel the abundant flow of love. When we flourish from the inside out, then anything is possible.” I am working on my biggest collaboration yet with many amazing women: creating a Lash, Love & Life educational retreat. Three days of learning about lashes, love & life with balance and wellness to help grow as individuals and then ultimately as an amazing team. We will be filming our first retreat in July 2018 and a follow up in August 2018, with the first video rolling in early fall. I have a fantastic group of women already onboard and looking to grow this tribe who are on same frequency and speak the same wellness language. In my own search for answers and help, I now do believe I have found my true happiness to life and success. The answer is balance. To be the best version of ourselves we need to take a step back, reflect, and work on healing from within. At the last Hollywood Lash Conference that year, I observed so many amazing women I personally knew, and thought of those amazing women I know, and went on to notice how many of us are not taking care of ourselves, we are running ourselves ragged, putting ourselves last and just what is that doing? We are running on empty; topping up just to get by........if we did this to a car it would stiffen and rust and eventually give up. We need to fuel our bodies and minds with the best quality ingredients we can. We need to work smarter instead of harder. We need mindful balance in our life and we can have it all. Listen to your own body and mind. Turn off the music, the television, your phone and take some time for you. See what happens… These past few years I have seen people in my life diagnosed with cancer and other fatal diseases. Life is way too short and if you don’t take time to enjoy it now, when are you ever going to? Try it… I dare you!

Just Eyelashes

by Luana Rastelli
Lash Inc Senior Journalist Rastelli Beauty Pro When we start working with eyelash extensions, it's common to feel a little bit lost and unsure of how to achieve that perfect look that we usually see on the internet. Sometimes, the frustration can be so big that people even think of giving up because they think they will never be able to achieve that result. We should always keep in mind that whilst it's important to know how to correctly apply lashes, we must also listen to our sixth sense. The eyelash extension technique is an art and we should know how to make the most of it to express our own unique style. My name is Luana Rastelli, I'm Brazilian and I have been in the beauty industry since 2009. I started doing eyelash extensions five years ago and, after long months of studying and training, I can create and develop unique looks with my own signature. This is how I show my personality, and it helps people trust me as a professional. I always ask my clients their desired look, and use all my existing tools to achieve the best result possible.
how do we avoid these frustrations? Just follow your intuition! Many top professionals are highly recognised today for their innovation and the authenticity of their work. A simple example of this is the ‘hybrid’ technique. If you have not yet tried this technique, you would be surprised by the variety of looks that can be created. Some professionals do not even consider hybrid lashes a technique, but the art of applying extensions shows the creativity of each artist. In today’s market, we have such a variety of curl, length, thickness, colour and design that we can create really unique looks by listening to our sixth sense.

learnt the volume technique but don’t yet have the speed or agility they have with their classic application. It is a fabulous way to introduce your clients to volume lashes, and means you can practice fan application regularly without taking hours and hours. Don't let your work become routine each person has a different eye shape, so it is up to you, the professional, to use every possible tool to show your potential and meet their expectations. Allow your sixth sense to speak louder and explore the possibilities for each client individually. Don’t be afraid to take a risk with styling, I'm sure that you'll be amazed by the result. Be creative, invent, and be different!
The finished look, however, is where it can start to really get interesting; when it comes to checking the result, we can find ourselves thinking, “I should have used a different curl” or, “If I had used a smaller size, it would look better”, so

The Things We Have

I find myself, in life, gravitating towards certain people. People who demonstrate kindness, honesty, integrity, compassion; People who are genuine. Relationships grow from finding those people with whom we have plenty in common. And that is exactly how I met the two beautiful people I have the pleasure of talking with today. Now let me introduce to you, Jessi Love and Derek Cockroft, the founders behind, Lash Common! Jessi and Derek, well, they are my 'type of people' and I can’t stress to you enough how successful everyone could be, if we chose to join with 'our people' and support one another. Nikki Huebner: This is such an exciting business venture and I believe this type of business model will change the future for the lash industry as a whole. But first, tell me a little bit about each of you? What’s your beauty industry history? Derek: Jessi (Lash Common's Chief Marketing Officer) is sincerely all about the people and the community she has been building and serving. Her genuine relationships with her clients, employees, and students, is what I first noticed about her as a business leader. When we first discussed serving and improving the current lash world, she let me know that giving back is really the centre of her motivation. Jessi wasn’t just about beauty or good business models. She spoke passionately about turning her attention to the need for a shared quality experience for customers, franchisee’s, and industry professionals. L. Lash Bar and Lash Line were both brands that I found myself attracted to. Her incredible brand marketing focus, all while surrounding herself with amazing people shined bright. And the combined 13 years of experience in the makeup and lash world, most definitely

helped pave the way for a well- rounded partner. Jessi: Wow, geez, how do I follow that? Derek has red hair and is a little bit of a jerk… LOL Derek: HEY!!!!! Jessi: OK, OK I’ll be serious... I chose to work with Derek, because he brought a different point of view and skills from what I was used to thus far in the makeup and lash industry. His human resources and business operations experience launched interesting conversations between us. These common and compatible conversations lead us to where we are today… the collective relationship creation, Lash Common. Derek coached me on becoming a better leader, and he helped me address issues in a completely different way. Since we started as direct competitors, each of us were cautious at first, but when it came time to make a final decision about moving forward with Lash Common, it was an easy decision. I knew in my heart that we were going to assist in improving so many lash artist lives, and now here I am, being interviewed by Lash Inc. International Magazine, sharing our passion and vision. Derek’s lash experience centres around his ownership of Lash Affair Lounge, his work with NALA, but his ability to lead and strategise, with a genuine undertone, is what truly brings LASH COMMON to its core.

'CET' for Lashing
Ask the Expert: by Ellie Malmin Lash Inc. Senior Journalist Lashologist™
How do I turn a prospect into a loyal, life-long client? Communication, excellent customer service and taking an interest in your client “CET” up for lashes. This is a helpful method which will open communication with your client and provide some insight into their life. C = Client profile/release/consultation E = Examine T= Take pictures and Talk
Consultation This form asks certain questions in order to determine if she has any sensitivity issues. On the back, there is a section to write down her design, and expectations. The form explains the lash growth cycle, and aftercare, such as keeping lashes clean. In addition, you may need an extra box to record the patch test. This form is a guideline to follow and can be changed to accommodate your practice. It is informative to the client, allowing them to feel safe and comfortable knowing that you have their best interest in mind.
Examine Put on gloves, and examine your client’s eyes before you clean them. Clients wearing glitter eye shadow may have microscopic cuts when you remove their makeup. Clean the eyelid and eyelash

area; I like to use a gentle eye makeup remover, then eyelash shampoo and rinse with eye wash. Go through the steps of cleansing, checking for any soreness in the lash line and ask them how they feel. It is important that they know what a cleansed eye feels like compared to the uncleansed. Repeat on the second eye. I have had much success by having my client actively take part in this protocol. They are encouraged to then apply the steps at home and more likely to follow through with caring for their investment.
If you incorporate pictures into your consultation, your client is able to see what we see, and feel safe and comfortable in the knowledge you have their best interest at heart.
Client Profile Sheet Email this to your client to asking them to fill out ahead of time. Do not start consultation prior to having your paperwork filled it out.

Previous treatments
Take a picture of your client from the following angles: Eyes closed, eyes open, side view and birds eye view. I have found that using a white gel pad while taking your pictures helps reveal gaps and cowlicks in the lash line, and makes it easier to measure her eyelashes.
This section allows you to get to know your client, and will give you insight on her present and past experience. If a client has permanent liner you should wait until she has healed. If she has had previous lash extensions, or lash lift, find out about her experience. What did they like or dislike? Did they notice any sensitivity? What product was used, and do they know their previous lash map?

Micro needling, Micro dermabrasion, Peels, Botox, and Dysport: Lash extensions can cause sensitivity if applied too soon after these treatments – wait at least two weeks. It is recommended your client does NOT lie flat immediately after injections, nor apply pressure on the area.
Accutane: Wait at least six months after the completion of the medication, as skin is highly sensitive and will easily react, plus the eyes can remain very dry and irritated.
the lashes and along the eyelid margins. Mixed blepharitis is the combination of both anterior and posterior, and if left untreated, it could result in dry eye.
Laser: Depending on the type of laser used, make sure skin is totally healed as it will be more fragile and sensitive
If we suspect blepharitis, we must advise the client to visit her GP, as we are not medically trained and should not diagnose.
Eye surgery: Eyes must be fully healed, and it is good practice to obtain GP consent, adhesive vapour can affect the healing process.
Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis: Clients suffering from any of these are more prone to sensitivity, and adhesive vapours could cause flair up.
Regular eye test: Recommend your client has a simple eye test if she has not had one in the last three years.
Thyroid conditions: Lashes tend to shed more frequently, which means time between infills will be shorter.
Conditions
Diabetes: Diabetics take longer to heal, may have thinner skin and are likely to be more sensitive.
Sensitive, Watery, or Itchy eyes: This could mean they are not a good candidate for eyelash extensions; examine the lids to see if there is any irritation. Seasonal allergies: They could demonstrate the symptoms above and the adhesive may cause further symptoms, as the immune system is already on high alert. Animal allergies: Some clients are sensitive to animals, and even have pets - this can cause more sensitivity to their eyes. Clients who are prone to sinus infections can be prone to conjunctivitis - make your client aware that blowing their nose and touching their skin can cause infection, it is best not to work on someone with a sinus infection. Light sensitivity: This could be an underlining problem when securing bottom lashes down. Start off with clients’ eyes closed, slightly but gently open her eye and place the pad on top of her bottom eyelashes. Do not switch your Glamcor on until her eyes are closed. Dr y eye: Clients usually use prescription eye drops that tend to leave a crust on their lashes, and can affect retention. Blepharitis: There are several types; anterior blepharitis is where the base of the eyelashes become inf lamed, posterior blepharitis affects the Meibomian gland behind the base of
Claustrophobia: I have found having them hold something in their hand during the service allows them to remain calm, and it is best to work on one eye at a time. Pregnancy: Is it safe to lash a pregnant woman? You decide after this explanation. When a woman is pregnant, the baby will take all they need from the mother; even if she is taking prenatal vitamins, lash damage can occur. When she is further along in her pregnancy it is dangerous to lie flat for more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time, as the weight of the uterus compresses the aorta and can risk harming the foetus. It is important for her to stay hydrated, and increased pressure on the ladder will also leave her needing to visit the bathroom more often. Discuss this with your client, and let her look forward to having lashes on as soon as she gives birth. It will be a chance for her to be pampered and look more rested and relaxed.
Skins and Eyes: Skin Type can affect lash adhesion and adhesive. Normal: The skin is normal with no problems. Dry: Skin will be thinner and will have a tendency to be dryer when shampooing lashes. Oily: Skin needs to be cleansed properly and a buildup of oil should be removed from
the lashes or the lash extensions will not stay on. Sensitive: It is advisable to use sensitive adhesive and keep a close eye on the skin during service, in case of developing any sensitivity. Products containing glycolic acid/ retinol: These products migrate and thin out the skin making the eye area more sensitive, which means clients are more likely to react to the adhesive. Growth Serums: Tends to increase blood f low causing redness on the skin and means her eyes maybe more sensitive. Ask your client how her eyes are responding to the serum. Previous product reactions: If someone has reacted, they will always react – even sensitive adhesive contains cyanoacrylate. Contact lenses: Lenses should always be removed before treatment, and it is a good idea to provide solution and a lens case. Eye drops: Why are they using eye drops? They may have a prescription, and being treated for glaucoma or even dry eye. Eye drops can affect retention. Medications: Medication can have a negative effect on the integrity of eyelashes, leading to a swifter loss. In addition, it is important to remember that diet and stress may also play a factor in the health and longevity of lash extensions.
Pay Attention Change occurs on a daily basis. It is important that you carry out a consultation each time they return for treatment. Has anything changed in their daily routine, or have there been any changes in medication? While cleansing, have a good look at your client’s skin, take regular pictures, and create a file under their name. If you combine this with a brief note documenting any adjustments or changes made at their appointment, you will set yourself up for success!

How to Prepare for Your First
Lash Competition by Zachary Falb
Lash Inc. Senior Journalist Novalash Congratulations, you have qualified in classic and volume lash services. You practice and apply lashes every day and feel you have a great working knowledge.
What next? This is a common question from past students - after many months of practice, perfecting skills, patience and confidence building, what are the next steps in the lash journey?
Competitions! Taking the leap from lashing in your own environment, to lashing in a large competition, can be daunting and frightening. However, I recommend all
45 - Lashes
eager lash artists take this very step if they want to challenge their talent and abilities. Lashing behind a closed door doesn’t provide you with feedback or the ability to test your skills. When a lash artist is ready to improve their timing, their results, and compare against other talents, then a competition is calling their name.
Above: Train hard, lash easy
Get Involved So, you have decided to take the plunge – how do you actually take the step towards competing for a title? Two important steps – research competitions and practice your skills for competing. Most lash competitions have a novice or beginner category – requiring 18 months or less experience of classic or volume lashing. You might be surprised that there are lash competitions in your own country and travelling abroad is not necessary, plus there are reputable online contests all around the world.
Next step is to select the competition for you, determine the level of experience you need, and decided whether you are going for the volume or classic title.
Practice Why would you need to practice if you already lash all day, every day? Lashing in a competition is very different from lashing clients on a daily basis. You might be surprised at the requirements – were you aware that points are deducted for incorrect lash selection and incomplete sets, amongst other strict practices. Once you memorise the rules and point structure of your category it’s time to ask your friends and family to lend you their eyes for practice. Rules are very strict, for example, some competitions actually state only certain extensions must be used. Others state every single natural lash must be bonded for a top score, plus the correct extension must be placed on the correct natural lash. These are all application skills to practice. Finally, the time for a full set will be stated in the rules so make sure you can achieve a full set in the allotted time. If there are any other rules that stand out to you as different, practice them over and over.
Prepare You are usually asked to bring a few items to the competition. Select a model you already know, with good, easy lashes and perform a few sets before the competition so you know their lash line, and can finesse your shape and style.
Above and below: Just like an athlete, lash artists need to train their skills before a big competition
Make sure your lash tool kit is well stocked and bring a backup set of tools in case you drop your favourites. Don’t forget plenty of gel pads, stickers, tape, brushes, nano-mister, digital humidity monitor and any other accessories you might need so you can achieve top marks. Try and reduce stress by being over-prepared. Most adhesives perform differently in different working conditions. I cannot stress this tip highly enough – work with your adhesive in different humidity and temperature levels. The competition space might be warmer than you normally work with, and humidity levels might be higher or lower than you are familiar with. These variables will have a huge impact on the adhesive and the final results on which you will be judged. Do not assume that the competition space will have a certain humidity and temperature level just because it is located in the same country or area you live – air conditioning, heating and other factors can affect this. Take the time to practice working in different conditions so you are able to work with the adhesive in the space the competition will be held.
memorised the rules and you will give it your best shot!
The Results Be proud that you have taken yourself out of your comfort zone and tried your hands at a lash competition. If you didn’t do as well as expected ask for feedback from the judges or your scorecard. Most competitions allow you to see where you missed the points. If you did win an award that is a huge accomplishment to be celebrated! Take in all the different parts of the day so when your next competition comes around you are better prepared for the challenge. Be proud of how far you’ve come- being a skilled lash artist isn’t easy. Remember the first day of your beginner lash course and look at your results now! Lashing is a journey and a long-term plan. Take the time to invest in yourself and push yourself forward, and you will see what you are truly capable of achieving.
@z_is_for_zachary
Take different adhesive options and select the one that will perform the best for the competition environment. When the big day finally arrives, don’t stress. You have practiced on your model, tested your materials,

Have you already mastered your makeup skills but realize you still don’t have those celebrity eyelashes to complete your glamorous look? cosmetic surgery, of course, but that will cost you thousands and thousands of dollars! If you’re looking for a cheaper and safer way to boost your eyelash growth, eyelash serums are the answer!
Ingredients to look for Like choosing organic food for your body -- you only want to consume natural ingredients and stay away from suspicious or harmful chemicals. The same goes especially for your eyes! It’s a no-brainer that the skin around your eyes is very sensitive and it would make perfect sense to pamper it every day. Applying lash serums is one way of making sure that your eye area gets the treatment it deserves. Before you start buying eyelash serums by the bulk, it’s still important to consider the ingredients in each bottle.

It contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. If you wish to apply on its own, be sure to get the 100% pure kind and apply with a clean brush or cotton buds before going to sleep at night.
ĵĵ
Honey This glorious golden goo is rich in antioxidants, nutrients, and moisturising properties! Not only can it boost hair growth, but also help fight aging. What a deal! Should you create your own serum, prepare one tablespoon of honey, 2 tsp water, 2 tsp of olive oil in a small bowl. Apply gently with your fingers or with a cotton swab.
ĵĵ
Kelp Remember The Little Mermaid’s flowing red hair? It’s probably because of the kelp, which contains the hair-thickening ingredient, laminaria angustata. You can add it to your diet for all the other health benefits and find it as an ingredient in your serum or shampoo.
ĵĵ
Nettle An agent to fight against hair loss, the stinging nettle (also known as Urtica dioica), is a plant that is quite harmful when touched with bare hands. Ironically, it is also known for its medicinal properties and most especially, its potential to stimulate hair growth! You could take it as a supplement, oil-infused, or brew it into tea.
You may notice that these serums come in small packages, but that’s
Above: Honey makes for an affordable growth serum

only because you need to apply a small amount to get by. The worst you can do is lose or break the bottle. As a bonus tip: you do want to be more “hands-on” during this stage, so before applying anything to your eyelashes -- wash your hands and give yourself a gentle eye massage for a few minutes.
Things to Remember Be patient! Don’t expect overnight results. You have to give these serums time to work on your eyelashes. Only apply after you’ve finished your facial cleansing routine to make sure your face is bare and ready to relax. Be committed to application every day or as prescribed. Set a daily alarm if you have to. Also, don’t hesitate to experiment and try different brands. These lash serums are not one-size fits all type -- one formula may work for you and some may not. You may need to experiment a little, but once you find the best match for you, it’s going to be smooth sailing along the way!
In this age of selfies and beauty trends, having thicker lashes means you’ll always be picture-ready. You also don’t have to worry about the awkward morning after -- you’re still the same person despite the lack of eye makeup. In the long run, you might find yourself spending less and less on tubes of mascara since you don’t need to apply as much product anymore. As a bonus, your eye area will also get the spa treatment and nourishment it needs with the right and healthy serums. Finally, you’ll find people drawn to you especially in conversations. They’ll be looking deeper into your eyes when you give them your full attention, that’s for sure!

Why Businesses Fail on
Social Media
by Julia Mann CEO of Lash Tribe
Today, I want to tell you about the main reason why most businesses fail on social media. I have created a well known and respected global brand, won academy of the year 2018 and travel all over the world to judge, speak in front of thousands and coach others to grow their businesses and become better lash artists. All with the help of social media marketing, following a few simple ground rules and working hard. You can never get anywhere unless you work on it, every single day. Because I have studied this intensely over the last few years I have watched most businesses fail and only some succeed. So let me share. The main reason why businesses fail on social media: procrastination and NO implementation. Today’s social media world. It seems like such a complicated and big task, and guess what? This is why most people don’t even get started. They get overwhelmed and then they simply get scared, don’t do it and procrastinate. If you are on social media today and don't post multiple times per day on your business page, you are leaving $$$ on the table. This is a simple fact. The numbers don’t lie.
Facebook's algorithm currently loves to see many posts that add a lot of value to the community. No, I am not talking about sales post. I am talking about good old-fashioned value, post and stories that really interest their likers. This is something I tell my business students almost everyday: “You gotta get more social on Social Media or you will NOT grow today’s businesses, into tomorrow’s businesses.” And this is exactly what happened to me when I first started. It all felt like a big wall and I had to slowly start to climb it. Social Media marketing can be a little bit daunting at first. Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram... the sea of outlets is endless. So how on earth should we know where we to start? Start with ONE and maybe add a second channel if you are a fast learner. In the beauty and lash world, I would recommend you start with Facebook
and Instagram. It's visual and engaging. It’s very active and reactive. Get to k ow your followers and show them who you are. People don’t buy from businesses. They buy from people. (Unless you are Apple or Nike) Facebook owns Instagram and Instagram is an excellent outlet to showcase your work online and reach those who are looking for a Lash Artist in their area. Use local hashtags to increase your reach. It is also amazing for those who are trainers and want to show off their work and skills, take their followers behind the scenes and even sell their programs. With Facebook, you can advertise and reach even more people that are your ideal customer. Live Videos are also super cheap at the moment and get incredible organic reach online. Once you master the art of Instagram and Facebook, move onto Pinterest and YouTube. They do extremely well on Google. Lash Tribe has over 400,000 monthly view on Pinterest alone and over 3.2 million Video views since I opened up the channel. Google owns YouTube, so having a few “ How to...” Videos there and even going Live will really up your SEO (Search engine optimisation) further up in google search. If you feel stuck and uninspired to post a lot on social media, outsource and find someone who can do it for you. Social media is growing at a rapid rate at the moment, so try and stay on the ball, otherwise you will be overlooked in the sea of lash artists and trainers.

Hire Smarter
How to
by Paul Luebbers
General Manager of Integrity Lash Co-host of LashCast Podcast
Over the last twelve years my wife and I have run Integrity Lash, we’ve realised that one of the most important decisions is whom to hire and allow to join our team. You could say we are ‘battle hardened’ by our experiences. We’ve seen employees do all sorts of unexpected things; phones and iPads stolen, complete with client contact info, cash from the safe and tips absconded with. Yes, you do feel shock and disbelief when these things happen. I used to blame these employees and just think they were “bad apples”, but after much contemplation, I’ve come to the realisation that I’m the reason these employees didn’t work out. I looked in the mirror, accepted the fact that I was an inexperienced leader, and determined it was one of two things that happened: 1.
2.
They joined our team with high hopes to help us build a company but somewhere along the line, I let them down and broke trust with them which resulted in them in becoming bitter. They were a bad match with the company from the start, and I was not discerning enough to see they did not really fit our culture. They were not bad people, they just didn’t fit in with the way we wanted to run our company and because I was desperate for the help, I earnestly hoped they’d adapt and make it work.
Hiring a square peg is not the square peg’s fault but hoping they’ll adapt to the round hole never works and is unfair. As we’ve bumped and bruised along the way, we’ve developed a recruitment system which has really improved our chances of finding a good match for both us and for the potential employee. I know we are not the only salon who struggle to find the right employees, I hear this concern all the time from other salon owners. My hope is, by sharing our system in this article it will help others to ‘hire smarter’.
55 - Business
I think too many salon owners today just do one interview, look at some photos of the potential employee’s work, and take them on with high hopes it will work out. Looking back at the early days of our salon, we joke now that all you needed was a heartbeat, a friendly face and we’d hire you. We realised there must be a better process way to you give yourself, as well as the potential employee, a better chance of finding the right match.
Don’t be desperate - be patient. You might be working crazy hours and really need some help, but when you recruit out of desperation, you will not be discerning and may allow the wrong recruit into your company. Just hiring whoever looks “good enough” often does not pay off well. Be patient and really verify who you are bringing on board. This person who you plan to bring into your inner circle can become either your greatest ally or the very undoing of your business. Think of recruitment as you might think about getting married; you wouldn’t make a life-time commitment to marry the best of three people you met only once a bar. You’d make sure you get to know a potential partner and try to discern their character before you make a lifelong covenant. It’s better to NOT hire a potential employee who is a poor fit and lose business than to hire an employee who is a bad fit and lose your business (it almost happened to us).
Here is our Integrity Lash recruitment process. It is designed to tease apart a candidate’s motivations, to reveal character, and to determine if she will be successful at our salon. (For simplicity, I will be using female pronouns throughout this article, but I do understand that both men and women can be great candidates for any salon).
16 Questions When I first receive an email or a submission through a job site, I email the candidate 16 questions - I want to see if the candidate replies (most do not). This prevents me from chasing candidates who aren’t that interested. The questions can be modified to reveal what is most important to you as a business owner. I ask about experience, and if she does not have enough (we look for one year) we encourage her to keep learning and come back to us once she has the relevant amount. There are a couple of technical questions, plus inevitable ones about our company. I’m looking to avoid someone simply looking for a J.O.B. I want someone who wants to contribute and build a career with us - it reveals a limited level of engagement if she has not carried out even a basic google search.
Social Media If the person replies to my email, I immediately look at her social media, having included this as part of the 16 questions. Usually, she will just list the social media showing her lash work, so I try to find her personal pages, as this tends to reveal who she really is. If I find her complaining about life or work or photos of her being irresponsible, I will politely pass on the candidate.
Phone Interview This is a designed to be a little more in-depth, but the goal is to keep it under 30 minutes. I’m trying to gauge how much the candidate knows about us. Has she researched our Instagram, read our responses to reviews? Has she scoured our website, and does she know our stated goals and mission, has she proven to herself that our salon shares her values? During the call, I’m trying to gauge how she is motivated. What drives her? Is she solely motivated by money, or is she after flexibility, or a career path? I want to make sure her driver matches what we can offer. I’m also assessing her communication skills. Is she able to speak clearly, do her answers make sense, and is she able to hold a conversation? Is it laborious or difficult to talk to her? I use the phone call to present “hoops” that she may or may not want to jump through. I talk about our DNA: We have two shifts which might constitute ‘odd’ hours. We are a team-based salon not a commission salon, we require a two-year commitment and only hire full time. These can be deterrents and unattractive to those who want something different, and I want to identify this conflict as soon as possible. There was a day when I tried to convince people of the merits of working with us, but I have found that it is better to find candidates who already believe in our message and way of working than to try and convert non-believers.
One on One Interview with Manager This is our first go-deep, where I ask a lot of questions to see if I like the candidate. It’s the first time I’m seeing this person and I’m assessing her appearance and observing how she engages with front desk staff. Does she look professional? I want to know if she can keep eye contact with me through the whole interview. During this meeting, I will ask her essentially the same question in different ways; I want to see if she is consistent with her answers. If she is not, it means she could be making things up. I’m not saying that any one of these things should be a deal breaker, but it’s in your best interest to know as much as possible about any red flags. I also want to see if asking similar questions
frustrates the candidate and how she handles it. If I have time, I will take her outside the salon environment, such as a coffee bar - a more casual setting will help her to let down her guard and reveal more of her character. Engineering a way to see how she interacts and treat others while under a little stress (the interview) can be constructive. My goal during this interview is to find out if this person is humble, hungry and smart (people-smart not booksmart). If you want to improve your recruitment process I recommend reading “The Ideal Team Player” by Patrick Lencioni. He builds a great case for how these three traits are the most important ones you need to seek in an employee. It’s a quick read, and it will completely change your hiring process.
Audition with the Lead Trainer If I feel the candidate is solid with the qualities we are looking for, we will bring her back for an audition with our lead trainer. We ask the candidate to bring a model and come to our salon with the tools and products she is most comfortable using. We only hire people with a minimum of one year of experience, so if she tells me here she doesn’t have any tools, I know that she isn’t very serious with her career which helps us to eliminate some of the
unqualified. It’s also a red flag if she can’t produce a model. Once she comes in for the audition, we tell her that we don’t need to see her do a full set. We just want to see her command of the tweezers and how she handles the lashes. Our trainer will let her do lashes alone for 5-10 minutes so she can get comfortable. No matter the experience, every candidate shakes a bit, and we reassure her it’s ok and the nerves will calm. The trainer will observe the potential candidate for a bit once the jitters have passed. Can she isolate efficiently with one hand? Can she pick up an extension quickly? Is she able to use both tweezers in tandem or only separately? We’re not assessing technique because we’re going to train her in our way, but we’re looking for muscle control and the ability to perform the basic components of lashing. After another 10 minutes or so, our lead stylist will try to teach the candidate some of our lashing technique. If the person is resistant to the feedback, we know she is not humble and not a good fit for our company. If she takes the feedback with a good attitude, then this is another sign to us that she could be a good fit. We always retrain our staff when we hire them, this audition gives us an idea of how long it will take us to train the new employee.

Business Breakdown: Who is
Your Competition? by Andi Ramsay
Creative Director, Lumogenesis
Hi everyone, and welcome to the 'Competition Issue' of Lash Inc. The word 'competition' conjures a lot of different meanings, depending to whom, and in what context, you say it. In the Lash Industry it implies two principal meanings; a contest where you compete against other lash artists and a set of judging criteria to demonstrate your skill; and the other lash artists who operate businesses in your area who your clients (and potential clients) may go to instead of coming to you. I want to speak brief ly about both meanings, and hopefully demonstrate a few truths and a few myths about both as the way in which you think about “competition” can have a marked effect on your success, both in contests, and in attracting clients.
Contests The lash world loves a contest. They happen all year long, all over the world, and if you want to see the extraordinary skills present in the industry then you are sure to see it at a competition. Coming up very soon we have Lash Battle in Glasgow, and The Lash Games in London. Both are sure to bring out the “mad skillz” of Lash Artists from every corner of the globe. In my experience, a lot of people (lash artists included, they are people after all!) shy away from contests when they don't think they can match the performance on the top rung of the ladder. This is a huge mistake and they are missing out on a great opportunity to grow and learn. The artists who win the top prizes at these events don't just
And, just like in contests, when you run a business you have to take the hits when they come. You win by working hard, not taking the shortcuts, and always putting your best foot forward. When you market your business, always highlight your strengths, show your best work, keep doing everything you can to show that you are the one to choose. You might not be able to force people to book an appointment with you, but if you speak proudly, show yourself to be respectful and talented, then you can influence the way that those clients look at lash artists overall. Then your stand-out traits work in your favour and against your competition.
quietly lash away until they “feel ready” and then enter the most challenging categories. They compete for years; sometimes winning, sometimes losing; until their names are well known, and their skills are perfectly honed. Then they work even harder to take the coveted trophies. Don't hold back waiting until you think you're perfect, build your skills up slowly. Get into the beginner categories, lose a few contests, watch the work of the winners and learn how to improve.
In essence you are teaching people what to look for in a Lash Artist. So that when those things are absent in your competitors, they are noticed. Never put bad work out in the world, whether it is in an online contest, a live lashing event, or an evening client after a hard day. Always work your best, realise that someone is always judging you, and that you can win if you just keep grabbing the next rung up the ladder, and climbing with all your might!
You will get there. I believe in you. Business In a lot of ways, competition in business is the same as competition at contests.
Keep growing by always learning.
You don't get to choose who your competition are. You are the person who decides who is the best. You win some, and you lose some.
Left: It's not always a fight to win, sometimes it's a game

Business Awards
How To Win by Louise Tierney
Editor-in-Chief, Lash Inc. Magazine
This is the third instalment in our series on winning awards for your business. Part 1 appeared in Issue 18, and part 2 appeared in Issue 18.
Step 3 Testimonials Customer Testimonials and Nominations
make clients feel important and that their opinion matters, which has to be a good thing. Then you can choose the very best nominations for your entry.
Some award bodies may ask for customer nominations as part of your entry. It may be just a small part of the application but it’s still very important as the little things can mean a lot to the awards organisers.
Do you know customers, suppliers and partners who have said something wonderful about your business or are willing to commit something in writing for your entry? Customer testimonials should be easy to get as customers love to say something nice about something they love. It’s probably not something they will get asked to do so very often!
It doesn’t do any harm trying to get as many nominations/customer testimonials as possible. It will also
In order to get Nominations to support your application you can either produce your own form to give out to clients or

Get this right and it can make the world of difference to your dreams of winning. If you are producing your own, here is an example of a free online version of a testimonial form creator:
www.webformdesigner.com Other creators can be built into your website and it’s not too for one. The basic information you need to include is largely self-explanatory, but this should involve those shown below:
Customer Details (First Name), (Surname), (Email Address), (Contact Number). Nomination Details: Person or Department being nominated, Space for the nomination / testimonial. Once you have the form sorted you will need to let your customers know about it. It’s best to try and keep things simple. For example you can have nomination details at your point of sale or reception desk. Post a link on your blog, Facebook page and send to any newsletter subscribers you may have. Nomination details and a link should also be added to your website. Do you have a mailing list already? If not it’s a good idea to create one so you can keep your customers up-to-date on everything that’s happening in your business, including your award entries. A good website for list building is:

You should get some excellent nominations which you can use in your entry. It’s also an interesting process to follow in order to discover more about your customers.
