Letter from
Welcome to issue 21 of Lash Inc. International. The theme of this issue is community. This edition features several articles and pieces from our senior journalists and contributors sharing what community means to them. What is a community? According to Google, A community is a network of social and economic relationships and the places where those relationships interact. While this is a broad explanation of the term, it is also restrictive. It suggests that just living near each other as you would in a suburban neighbourhood, doesn’t mean you’re in a community.
The lash community is a highly vibrant and dynamic environment made up of talented individuals who are predominantly women. With the community experiencing continuous growth and expansion, it features lots of amazing artists who are supportive of one another, alongside inspiring educators who are focused on encouraging student and supporting other educators’ students through various forums. As technology continues to advance, the internetwork has provided the largest platform for the Lash Community to interact, connect and engage in helpful discussions. This has provided a middle ground for all artists, students and educators to discover how to improve their skills and share information seamlessly. Join the lash community and interact with talented artists and educators. Lash Magazines and other resources are now available worldwide and can serve as powerful motivation for lash artists and educators to share their work globally. Not only does this connection and information sharing provide a source of motivation for readers, it also inspires people to creativity through the Lash work and editorial pieces being released by talented lash artists. Accessible mediums like Podcasts, Lash Inc. Media App, competitions and conferences all bring people together and helps foster the growth of the lash community.
Updates: In January I visited my business partner Lana Slatina, in Spain. Lana has been working extremely hard to raise the standard in Spain and now we have joined forces through the Lash Inc Association and AEPEP to make this happen faster. Her efforts to foster collaboration and participation within the lash community is yielding great results and she will be making a big announcement at her conference in Madrid in June. This has provided a powerful synergy that has never been seen in other industries and I am confident that our growing community will provide the basis for creativity and extraordinary achievements. At Lash Inc. we are absolutely excited about the future of our community and we’ve got quite a lot to share with you in this edition of our Magazine. Commuting for the
Love of Lashes

My love and passion for Eyelash Extensions and the Beauty Industry has taken me all over the planet. I feel absolutely blessed to be able to do what I love and share my knowledge by teaching all over the world, meeting amazing people. I AM SO GRATEFUL!! However, lets rewind a little bit. This all happened because of my intense obsession for perfection. Whatever I touched, whatever field I worked in, I was always obsessed to reach the ultimate perfection in that field, and to offer the absolute best service to my clients. I fell in love with Eyelash Extensions 35 years ago with my very first set of lashes, I was hooked! I never planned to make a career out of it, but because of my client's referrals, and the fact that I was the only one offering volume lashes, I soon became the bestknown Lash Salon in Montreal, I started offering training in Montreal, then Worldwide, I started an online store shipping Internationally, offering Lash, Microblading and beauty products. Soon after, because of the demand, I expanded to offer top quality training in all spheres of beauty, recruiting top

trainers in their respective field, this is how World Beauty University was born. We now offer training World Wide, and we organize World Beauty University Lash and Brow Championship, the biggest Lash and Brow contest you can find.
How i started commuting So, if this didn’t keep me busy enough, on one of my many vacations to South Florida, I decided that Florida beauties deserved beautiful lashes as well. I noticed that only an estimate of 1%, (and I’m being generous here) had Eyelash Extensions. So right then and there, I opened a studio!! My friends keep telling me I should give conferences on “how to open a business in 5 days”
My plan; well if you could call it a plan, as I tend to act on impulse; was to hire staff, train them with my Advance Volume Techniques, and once in a while be on site to check on things. I planned to go to the beach, lie by the pool sipping on a cocktail, shop, wine and dine! Our new clients would always ask for me to lash them personally. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love lashing, so this was beyond flattering. I also believe I am one of the few owners with World Wide companies to still personally lash clients. I absolutely love the look on their faces when they looked at themselves in the mirror. It made my day! So with nothing more than word of mouth, I found I had big demand for training. I started flying from Montreal to Florida once a month for the few first months, then every 3 weeks, then every 2 weeks, and now every 10 days. That's how I started commuting for the Love of Lashes, and my plan to lie by the pool fell apart.
There are lots of benefits to always being on an aeroplane, and living out of my suitcases. Luckily Montreal to Florida is only 3 hours flight, but I use my time waiting for the flight and during flight to write articles, upgrade training manuals, and studying a fourth language. I am now an Elite client with the Air Lines, between my Florida commuting and my other travels to give training and conferences everywhere, so I love that they take good such care of me. One of my favourite parts of travel is always the look on the faces at customs when they ask me, after looking at all the stamps and visas attached to my Passport: “What kind of business makes you travel like this?” For me to respond with Lashes is absolutely priceless!
All my hard work aside, I love my life and all the great things the Lash and Beauty industry brought my way. To the beginners, you need to put in lots and lots of hours of work, nothing comes easy. But that shows you where passion, and being addicted to perfection can lead you. I now have amazing clients in South Florida who are addicted to my Star Volume Style, which is quite different than anything else. Follow your path, do not let anyone slow you down, be creative, stay among positive and secure people, that will encourage you to go after your dreams, or to listen to that idea that popped up in your brain. Educating Community
on Lash Extensions by Charlene Nutter
I have been an eyelash extension stylist for 15 years. I remember in the beginning no-one knew what eyelash extensions were. As the years have moved forward it’s become a service everyone wants. I have watched the service and offering of eyelash extensions expand, some positive, some negative. I believe as an educator in the beauty field, whether we’re a licensed Aesthetician, Cosmetologist or Makeup Artist, we need to continually take classes to expand our knowledge and stay up to date in our field. Unfortunately in eyelash extensions it seems this isn’t happening. There are many reputable companies that require we hold a license in the beauty field in order to become certified as an eyelash extension stylist. There are also many companies who don’t require any license to take their class whether it’s online or in person. This is what has been a thorn in the side of many talented, educated lash artists. The board of Cosmetology and Aesthetics in the majority of states have no rules or regulations on eyelash extensions artists. Our normal consumer doesn’t know this so when a salon or spa offers eyelash extensions

they assume that person(s) know what they’re doing. That isn’t the case as many have seen and experienced through receiving shoddy, inferior work. What can we do in helping our community become aware of choosing a lash stylist who is properly trained and experienced in the application of lash extensions? After becoming more and more frustrated as people would call asking if I could fix someone else’s awful work I felt I needed to do something to make consumers aware that not everyone advertising they offer eyelash extensions can actually properly apply them or is even educated enough in the service. I have a website for my business and a Facebook page for each of my locations as well as an Instagram Page. Social Media!!! Such a powerful tool. I would
start there, posting pictures of clients who had come to me with subpar lashes, and show it was someone else’s work. I showed what I did to fix, removing and properly applying lash extensions which were clean and not harmful to the natural lashes. I also began posting statements that made consumers aware to be mindful that not everyone offering this service actually had the proper education and attained skills to do them correctly. I have heard from my own clients that they have seen these posts which makes me happy because they’re sharing these posts, and other’s in the community are also seeing them and my message. My next goal is to attend the next meeting of the board of Cosmetology, Aesthetics and Barbering and help them to understand the ramifications and harm that bad eyelash extensions application can cause to someone’s natural lashes. I truly believe there should be rules in each state requiring that they need to be licensed in the beauty field and required to practice for the proper amount of time before taking in paying clients. By you sending letters to your state board this could also help them see the importance of having some type of control of the service of eyelash extensions and ultimately protecting consumers.

Build Community
with Facebook Groups by Katie Gross
“Sense of community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through their commitment to be together.” McMillan, 1976 This digital age we are in allows us to have direct connections to others in our industry through Facebook groups. We can discover mentors and partners, learn new skills, and share our personal triumphs and tribulations. It can connect us to thousands or even millions of people who share our
passions, support our visions, offer us advice, and help us achieve our dreams. Alone, we may not have been able to achieve this type of power, but with the Internet, specifically Facebook, pursuing social good, we can grow together. What a time to be alive and a perfect time to grow and thrive!

Today, Facebook has evolved to focus even more on building communities, and groups are the natural tools to help forge those new kinds of relationships. According to Hootsuite, one billion people already belong to Facebook groups. About 10% of those belong to groups that Facebook has identified as “very meaningful,” communities that “quickly become the most important part of someone’s experience on Facebook.” Facebook groups are an excellent platform to build relationships online. They provide a space to communicate about shared interests with certain people. It is so important that as a lash artist you are active in numerous lash focused groups. If you want a successful business, you need to form meaningful connections in your network that you can reach out to when you need them. Having like-minded business owners and fellow lash artists to talk to also gives you the opportunity to share advice on a variety of things related to your business or even your personal life. You must be coachable and willing to accept new thoughts, ideas and concepts to grow yourself and your business. Groups allow you to tap into advice and expertise that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Eighty percent of success is showing up as you never know where you’ll find your next tip, trick, or connection!

LEADING A GROUP Great leadership happens when you can stimulate and inspire others to deliver extraordinary outcomes, and to help them develop and grow into leaders themselves. Being a leader in a group allows you to leverage the hearts and actions of others toward the achievement of goals and objectives that you care about. When you run your group efficiently, your group will become a part of your professional network, trusted colleagues, or customers. Your online persona is a very important aspect of leading a successful Facebook group. You want to be someone they know, like and trust. When voicing your opinion, you must think of the positive or negative impact it will have. You must appear competent, authoritative and respected. You need to be someone worth listening to. When creating a group, you must first ask yourself: What is the purpose of forming your community and what value do you want to offer? What benefits can a member expect to experience by joining? You have the opportunity to create a group for anything and customize the group’s privacy settings depending on who you want to have access to the group. Once you’ve formed your group, you must create expectations and rules for members. Be clear and concise on what
is allowed and not allowed. Encourage people to participate, contribute, answer questions, share photos, and provide feedback and input. Create an environment in your community where members feel like they have a say in what happens. Be committed to contributing to your group regularly with relevant content. You must also find the time to moderate the group or recruit members to do so when necessary. Setting a theme for each day of the week is a great way for members to know what to expect and will create ongoing engagement. Try different themes and see which ones generate the most responses and adjust your content accordingly. You are free to promote yourself, your expertise and your business but try to follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of your posts should create engagement and build relationships and only 20% should be promotional. If you have created a group to sell something, keep in mind people don’t like being sold to. However, if you can help them with their needs, opportunities and problems they’ll buy from you.

Daring to be different

Owner/Founder at Star Lashes World and World Beauty University I was never one to follow the trends, on the contrary, I always wanted to be different. My goal when giving my Volume Master Class is to teach my students to dare to be different, to learn from me, from other trainers, from colleagues, to absorb, to register, to get inspired, but at the end of the day, to try to create their own style, their own edge, step out of the mould, and to reach deep down in their own creativity. First of all, it is of the utmost importance for me that they do a personalized Lash Map for each and every client, as every client is unique. Look at their style, their age, their eye shape, their eye color, their features, their height, the color of their skin, and finally their personality. I genuinely love teaching my exclusive Color Mapping technique, Accelerated fanning Technique, and Styling. Styling and creating your own style will definitely set you apart, as so many Lash Technicians do the exact same set to all their clients, no matter what they look like, sadly this is true. Your clients will be addicted to you, as no one else will be able to

reproduce or recreate your unique sets. Do not be afraid to mix Curls, Lengths, Thicknesses, Textures, colors,… The sky is the limit!!! There are absolutely no boundaries. Lashing is artistry!
If you are passionate, obsessed, addicted to eyelash extensions, always looking to reach perfection, and to give your clients the absolute best, well you deserve a great income for the hard work, great skills and passion! Every day I meet Lash Technicians at my Training Center who are afraid to raise their prices. Don't be afraid to charge more than everybody else, clients will recognize your talent, there are lots of different kinds of clientele, & keeping your prices too low will usually attract the bargain hunters. Don’t be afraid to go for the high-end clients, they will more often than not, appreciate your work, be respectful, be polite, will always be on time, will never “no show”, will always pay you and tip generously. Do not let anybody try to downplay your prices, be firm, respect yourself, the more you are firm with your prices and the more you respect yourself, the more clients will respect you! You do this job because you absolutely love it, but would you rather make $200,00 a day, or $1000,00? I can help you raise your income with the right training and mindset! 7 Tips to improve your by Luana Rastelli
Before we start doing eyelashes extensions, we have this idea that the technique is simple and easy, but the artist needs to know much more than “eyelashes and glue” to ensure the technique is correct and to get the best retention for each set. It’s very common to have doubts about which product or technique is best, after all, we all want loyal customers and we want to make sure they always recommend us. So, I have prepared some tips that can make your sets even better!

The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that the natural lashes need to be 100% clean and dry before the technique. Any residue or oiliness on natural lashes creates a barrier between the adhesive and the eyelashes, which can result in "false attachment" or even poor retention, because natural lashes are not as they should be.
Nowadays, we have so many products offering best retention, and that makes us want to buy and test them all, but, in most of cases, primers and other solutions are not extremely necessary. Most of them contain alcohol in their compositions and this can cause excessive dryness of the lashes. If the natural eyelashes become very dry, the adhesive will not have the same retention, since we know that the adhesives love particles of water to cure! If you use a primer, I recommend testing with saline solution instead. However, it’s recommended that you, as a professional lash artist, understands and learns everything about the product and the ingredients that you are using, to be sure that you are not applying anything that harms your client's eye. Remember that you should never use something just because someone said it’s good, you need to know if that it’s really necessary for you, your clients and your needs!
Use a shampoo recommended for the eyes area and ALWAYS clean the lashes before any application, without forgetting, of course, to also clean the eyelids and around the eyes. Rinse in abundance to remove all product residue and dry with tissues. Avoid using cotton to prevent lint from loosening and getting inside your client's eyes or catching on extensions (in case of refill).

3. Less is always more! At this point, you might already know that the adhesive’s strength and the retention come in the composition and application, and not in the quantity of it on the natural lashes. The products we have in the market today are way more advanced than before and you don’t need to use a lot, to extend the life of the extensions. The perfect amount of adhesive should correspond to a very thin layer and should never be seen after application on the natural lashes. If you see a black “dot" of adhesive, it means that you are using more than you should. Remember to try different types of viscosity as it might influence in the time of curing and to help you not having stickies after... Less is always more, when come to adhesive! Never forget that!

Isolation If you decide to try fast drying adhesives such as 0.5 to 1 second, you should know that it means that after dipping the extension into the drop of the adhesive, you need to apply it immediately on the natural lash. The isolation must be done before because only then you will be able to work with this kind off adhesives, still make a good placement and get the best retention on it!

This might sound a little common as we always see this in many online publications, but you cannot learn all the tips and tricks in some short free videos online. You must have a proper training to understand, and to learn why is so important to talk about placement and angle!
We recommend our clients to keep the extensions dry after application for 8 to 24 hours, but do you know the impact that humidity and temperature can cause during the application? You would be surprised! We have different countries, and different climates, so how can artist from a tropical country or with different seasons work with the same adhesive? My tip? Try to vary and find the balance between low temperatures and humidity from 50% to 55%. If you do not have such control in your workspace, it can be difficult to get the best retention of your product. Remember, you should always shake your adhesive bottle VERY well, before each drop, to be able to leave the composition well blended at the time of application.
Each client has a goal and a desire when they come to us, but the right choice of thickness and length has a significant impact on the durability of the technique. The more compatibility and less weight the lash artist can place on natural lashes, the longer that application should be! Knowing all the options and changing according to the thickness of the natural eyelashes of each client is one of the best skills you can have! If your client asks for something you know won’t be the best choice for her, just try to show all other styles and explain why is so important to not just apply the extension, but also to keep them growing health and strong. It’s up to you to learn how to achieve your client’s goals using the proper thickness and length for every client!
After placing the extension into the adhesive’s drop, you need to place it at the exact angle and press the extension. That little pressure will make sure your extension is really attaching in the lash — You can hold for 1 second and release. Once they have had contact, they shouldn’t detach. If you are an advanced lash artist and applying fans for volume technique, you need to know and learn how to properly wrap the lashes around the natural lash to make sure they last! If you don’t have enough knowledge about the technique, you can use the best products in the market, but it won’t necessarily give you the best retention, you need to invest first in your education and then you will see why this is the most important part!
Keeping our good reputation with the quality of our work requires a lot of effort and dedication! Our clients can’t imagine how much we study, practice and invest to be able to get our work recognized and to ensure we achieve their satisfaction. It is a daily job and many lash artists give up in the middle of the road because they find some problems in the way, common themes are: poor education, financial issues, difficulties in applying the correct technique and the feeling of never being good enough... But let me assure you: all you need to overcome all these obstacles are FOCUS AND DETERMINATION. After all, every teacher was once a student and we all have the same goal: to have happy clients and to make sure we are keeping our good lashing reputation.

Katie: I’m so glad to hear my targeted marketing efforts through Facebook ads worked and I found a diamond in the rough with you! I believe our souls have been friends in another life, 100%! As an active member of different lash forums, I saw that there were so many lash artists feeling so lost with finding their favorite lash products and companies. I had also taken advice from others in these groups, and found what worked for someone else didn’t always work for me. After paying full price, waiting 1-2 weeks for items to
arrive, and not always loving what was recommended to me, I figured there had to be a better way to discover industry related products. As a subscription box consumer, myself, and knowing that a subscription-based business model is ideal, I put two and two together and had a “Ta-Da” moment! K: I’ve been dubbed as “The Mad Hatter” as I do wear many hats in both business and personal life! I have three children, ages 3 and 6 and Husband (ha-ha!). My husband travels periodically for work, so I need to run a tight ship. I get the kids to school every morning, work a full day in my salon, pick them up, cook dinner then make it to the gym 3-4 times a week for my sanity. I answer emails in the nooks and crannies of my diary and for 1-2 hours before bed. As for a nanny, you can tell Mary Poppins to come and knock on my door any time! I’m truly having a blast though! I believe I was put on this earth to dream it and do it! To manage my day, I use the Square booking app on my phone to schedule both my daily salon appointments and personal appointments. I feel when I write things down, I remember them more easily, so I do always keep a notebook on hand for those random moments of inspiration.
N: What made you decide to start lash artistry when you have such a lucrative and successful career as a hair stylist? Did you always know you wanted to be a lash trainer as well? K: I have been a licensed Cosmetologist since 2003 and obtained a business degree in 2010. Owning a successful salon business has always been my goal. However, in 2010 my husband’s job moved us to Nashville, TN and I lost my entire hair clientele and had to build up again which, in this industry, means making scraps again. I was fortunate to become a Master Hair Stylist in a Top 200 Salon while there and experienced what it was like to work in a business that had systems and procedures put into place along with a phenomenal salon culture. When we moved back to Ohio in 2014, I jumped into lashes after seeing them take off while in Tennessee and knowing I’d have to rebuild a hair clientele yet again. I love working with my hands and have always been crafty. I also think to do lashes you need to have a “healthy amount of O.C.D.” and, that I do! My business is now 90% lash and brow services and it’s safe to say, I’ve found my calling! It’s always been my nature to share information, so training just came naturally. I learn things in different ways so it’s easy for me to take something and break it down into different learning techniques and share it in a way that’s easy for others to understand. I signed on to become a Certified Training Center for Bella Lash in the summer of 2018. Bella Lash recently changed the way lash artists learn to lash and I’m excited to be a part of the movement! N:After getting to work with you on our collaboration after care box, I saw a lot of myself in you. Like myself, you’re fearless when it comes to trying new things, you dive head first into your ideas. But correct me if I am wrong in saying that the only setback you and I both mimic, is trying to take on too much at one time? When you get yourself in this situation, how do you hold it together mentally and physically, especially for the sake of your kids and family? What “game face” tactics do you practice? Meditation, Yoga, Prayer, Exercise, Painting? Which “hat” do you put on to get you through these overbearing situations?
K: I wear my orange hat for this in the form of Orange Theory Fitness! And no, I’m not being paid for this advertisement! It’s like having my own personal trainer and I typically burn 500-600 calories in 60 minutes. Although I’m not in my best physical shape (I love sweets!) I am in great mental shape when I can make it to the gym 3-4 times a week. I have my best ideas while running on a treadmill! I always keep a notebook in my car so after a workout I usually spend a few minutes scribbling down my thoughts. I feel I am a better mother, wife, and business owner when I have an hour to myself to literally work out my frustrations and get into a Zen mode while sweating out the carbs. You know you’re busy when your “quiet” time is in a noisy gym! Believe it or not, I do better when I stay busy. It keeps me out of trouble! Spending time with this badass female entrepreneur was such a delight! Both of our laid back, yet OCD personalities were in tune the entire weekend! Or maybe it’s because we both truly and wholeheartedly live by the same motto, “Work Hard, Play Harder…” Every single lash artist should subscribe to her professional products subscription box! Community is the focal point for this quarter’s magazine, and in the short time I have been part of the Lash Industry, I have already witnessed at first hand a collective of people from all around the world offering welcoming and open spaces. Such support allows one many a platform to help us achieve business, career and personal goals. As a ‘lash newbie’ the love and support I’ve had from the Lash Industry, alongside other industries, for collaborative work and simply connecting with one another, has inspired me and boosted my confidence in the work I do both in the Lash Industry and in my daily working life in the Media. We all need help in life, and thankfully we now live in a time where can share our feelings more openly, from our fears and anxieties to our joyous and celebratory achievements – both online and offline. All of which are supported through our personal networks of friends and family, social media spaces, complete strangers (sometimes) to professionals with expertise in coaching and counselling.
Our personal, physical and emotional health, alongside caring for ourselves and each other is beyond any monetary or materialistic gain on a personal level. The 24-Hour Lash Conference which took place in October 2018 in support of UK Lash Institutes Gabriella Garardi was a true reflection of love, support and a global community coming together to not only help Gabriella but also to raise awareness and funding for Multiple Sclerosis.

To all who contributed with their time, talent, subscribing and donations; a heartfelt thank you. The love and support for Gabriella was very inspiring. I’ve only known ‘Gabs’ less than a year, having first met her at the Lash Events UK Conference in May for the very first time as I hosted the event on the Super Yacht. We connected straight away on a work level, from her attention to detail and events producer skill set, to her fun and loving persona where the ‘chats n bants’ were a plenty! We’ve continued our friendship and keep in touch regularly with me teaching her ‘Scottish’ as she calls it! Or me sending her ‘ABC’ spelling books as she got her ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘D’s mixed up for quiz question answers! Ruthie Belle by Sarah Johnson
Sarah: Hi Ruthie, You are a woman of many talents and you are huge influence in the lash world. I know a lot of people absolutely love your products, but I'm hoping you can tell me a little more about you please. S: Firstly, what ignited your spark? Ruthie: Thank you Sarah for your kind words, I started my lash career in 2012 while I was living in London and working in the W Hotel Spa.. I noticed that the women I met were wearing lash extensions that did not come even close to the quality of extensions my friends back home in Estonia were wearing. So a business idea hit me – get properly trained back home and start offering the service in London. Only 6 months into lashing I saw pictures of lashes that looked out of this universe (first volume lashes I ever saw) and found out that training was offered to learn how to make them. It was a no brainer for me and I ended up being one of the first three people in the UK to learn volume lashing! My first teacher and inspiration was Irina Levchuk whose skills were absolutely magical. 2 hours into the training I understood that I had made the best business decision of my life and that volume lashes were the way of the future. A few months later I came up with the idea to bring the new technique back to Estonia as there was literally no one here offering training for it. There was also no one offering volume lash diameters here so I realised that this was going to be my next business adventure – offering professional supplies.

Everything has just grown organically from there and since last year we are now in the business of manufacturing products as well as retailing them. My attitude in business has always been to be innovative, so the same applies to the products we manufacture – they offer lash artists a unique way to take their lash game to the next level in a safe way. Feedback that we have received is the thing that inspires me the most to push forward! S: How do you balance your relationship, motherhood and being a super successful businesses woman? Ruthie: It takes effort, dedication, support and having priorities straight. Since I started my career, I've worked pretty much all day and all evening, every day including weekends. I only stopped this a couple of months ago as I literally could not keep going like this – I was burnt out and realised that my kids needed me more than my business. I made a conscious decision to stop working after business hours and enjoy time with my partner and kids. I still struggle with taking time off as I'm a bit of a workaholic – I get anxious when I don't work and feel sort of lazy so I have to remind myself of my priorities and
that not working all the time is totally fine. I have my partner (who is also my business partner) to thank the most for helping me with keeping the balance. S: Since launching your webshop in March 2014, your products have been so popular and everyone either wants to be using or stocking your products. How does that feel? Ruthie: To be honest it still feels surreal! I still get butterflies whenever someone I've known about for years contacts my company for a collaboration. And when lash artists email us or post feedback how happy they are with our products and how it makes their lash life easier. it's just the best feeling ever and motivates me for a long time :) S: Your products are really changing the industry for the better, but which of your products are you most proud of? Ruthie: I think the biggest game changer so far is Superbonder as it's so innovative that even cyanoacrylate experts around the world have been impressed by it. The technology we have used for the composition is cutting edge, it really is different from any other sealant in terms of both efficiency and safety. I think the next big one is going to be our Adhesive Superdry (launching in January 2019). It's a glue accelerator we developed on the basis of Superbonder that does not only speed up adhesive
curing but turns ANY adhesive (no matter the original curing time) into a contact glue (immediate setting) no matter the humidity! Can you imagine not ever having to worry about low humidity or having to switch to a different adhesive in the winter because your beloved summer adhesive is no longer setting quick enough?! It actually makes adhesive set so fast that when you dip your fan into glue and let it drop the fan is cured and does not fall apart when it touches the floor! On top of that it starts bonding adhesive vapors (the purpose of Superbonder) immediately so your client's eyes are less irritated during lash appointments. S: How do you come up with the ideas for your products? Ruthie: I'm active in Facebook lash groups and read what lash artists struggle with the most. My chemist is one of my best friends so we talk for hours every day about life and lashes and discuss the problems I've seen in lash groups and what could be the best solution for these problems. Our priority number one is the safety of the products and number two the efficiency so the recipe for our products is always highest quality ingredients + out of the box thinking. S: Who is your inspiration? Ruthie: I'm inspired by girl bosses – women who know what their goals are and their worth and who are kind and sweet to others while working towards their goals. There is so much bitching and backstabbing in our industry that seeing that you can reach the top without being like that is my biggest inspiration. If I had to pick a name from the lash world, I would pick two – Julia from Lash Tribe and Kim from Borboleta. S: When you're at home with your beautiful family, how do you switch off from work mode? Ruthie~ When I get home my kids come to the door to greet us and its pretty much nonstop action until they go to bed at 8pm so there's literally no time to think about anything else other than the little ones.
S: I was going to ask what you like to do in your spare time, but do you ever have any spare time? Ruthie: ha-ha yes, the second question would be more accurate and the answer is nope I literally have no time for myself at the moment. But my goal for 2019 is to start focusing on myself again too. I used to go horseback riding so I want to take that up and start working out again. S: Being as busy as you are, there must be some level of stress attached to it. So how do you personally deal with that stress? Ruthie: I've learnt a lot over the past year how to deal with it as I used to take everything that was not perfect soooo seriously. At one point I realised that I could never please every single person and not get so upset when someone was not happy about something. I now focus on the positive and only care about criticism when there is something constructive about it. It makes life A LOT easier! S: What has been the most important part of your business journey so far? Ruthie~ It has helped me mature as a person and to become independent 11. What drives you to keep going when it's been tough? Ruthie: Giving up has never been an option for me. I try to focus on the positive even when things get tough – positive feedback from a customer to our products or to our customer service are the most motivating ones for me S: Out of all your products, what is your absolute favourite? Ruthie: Our Lash Lift Superboost series. I've seen too many over processed lashes that have put people off from Lash Lifts so we came up with a super gentle formulation that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to over process! I'm putting together a Lash Rehab training course that teaches lash artists how to treat over processed lashes to not only save them but to actually bring them back to life and grow them longer.
S: What do you enjoy most about what you do? Ruthie: Coming to the office does not feel like work for me – I get to do something I'm obsessed with for a living so I never feel like I have to work but I get to enjoy my passion for a living S: What's your least favourite part of running a business? Ruthie: Annoying and rude customers lol. My team always gives 100% and it can be very frustrating when clients send angry emails, usually about something that's not our fault. Like an email in caps lock demanding to know why they have not received their order which they never paid for. S: Your success has been huge since the web shop launch in 2014, where do you see yourself being in the next 5 years? Ruthie: I like this saying “Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans” so I gave up making long term plans for business a while ago. I focus on what I do at the moment and only set wider business plans for oneyear maximum. My main goal for 2019 is to focus on marketing as we already have a few fantastic products that help lash artists and we have so many more coming. Now it's time to properly get the word out to reach as many lash artists as possible I think you're an amazing lady, who has & is continuing to change the industry for the better in so many ways. The NALA Awards Gala

Emily Lee is an Award-winning Esthetician and Lash Professional from Vancouver, Canada. She is an International Judge and Educator, Competition Consultant, and a Freelance Multi-Media Journalist. Emily believes in being integrous, uplifting, fun, passionate, and most importantly, she believes in being the change.
Part 2 – The Awards Gala With the bright lights of cameras flashing, invigorated chitter chatter, a plush red carpet leading past the media wall and into the ballroom; it was like stepping into an exclusive Hollywood gala for the stars. Gorgeous gowns of lavish fabrics in all colours filled the foyer, many of them adorned with sparkling jewels or delicately elegant lace with the men looking debonair in tailored suits and tuxedos. As you make your way through the double doors and into the ballroom with drink in hand, you notice that the room, though it hasn’t changed much physically, is now exuded an almost palpable energy of enchanting anticipation of the night ahead. The round tables were now draped in classic black linen, the lights dimmed and all attention was directed toward the stage where the Master of Ceremonies Donovan Workun and Ron Pederson, both captivated us with their hilariously entertaining improvisational comedy.

A delightful three course seated dinner was served, with vegan or gluten-free variations available for guests with special dietary restrictions. I had chosen the regular menu and the first course was what I can only describe as one of the best tasting salads I have ever eaten. It was an artisan salad with pickled strawberry, kiwi, mango and toasted almond clusters all drizzled in hibiscus flower syrup and balsamic vinaigrette. The main course was a seared rosemary and thyme spring chicken breast with a brown beech mushroom truff le jus atop rustic mashed potatoes and a green bean and pepper bundle, and it was oh, so juicy and tender! cheesecake with Bailey’s sauce and fresh berries and worth every single carb. We now get to the part of the evening that all the guests have been eagerly waiting for – the awards ceremony. With several months in the making, the journey has been long to get to this point. With hundreds of nominees who were meticulously narrowed down to three finalists per category, and of those three, only one winner was presented with a prestigious NALA Award. The NALA Award Winners are not chosen by a public vote. Instead, there is an awards committee who methodically sifted through hours of essays, photos and video footage to determine the candidate that best embodied the award’s requirements and essence. Congratulations to all the winners! After the awards ceremony wrapped up, tables were cleared away for an impromptu after party with the DJ playing old school hip hop tracks. With Drinks flowing, cameras still flashing – it was a good night but alas all good things must come to an end. Given the vibe, energy and passion which everyone helped contribute too, we can be sure that next year’s event will be even better!

REGRETS
Do you have any?
I don’t. I’m not sure if that comes down to me being very brave or very stupid, but I try every day to do things even when they scare me. Have a look at the photo below. This is me (top right) and Lisa Gillanders from Lashworx (top left) on top of the Skytower in Auckland – the tallest man-made structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Heights terrify me and here I am 192 metres above the ground, with nothing to hold onto but my shrivelling dignity (I screamed – A LOT!). I did this skywalk despite my fear because I knew I would wish I had the courage to do it later on. I then base jumped to the bottom!

NO REGRETS. I believe that everything in life is a learning curve – mistakes might be made along the way, we might even fail – but we also learn lessons about ourselves and how to do things better next time. Facing your fears and taking that first step (or having another try) WILL make you stronger. On their death beds, people often say their biggest regret is not spending enough time with people they love, working too much or not trying or doing the thing they always dreamt they would. I don’t ever want that to be me!
Getting a good work/ home balance is tough – reeeeeally tough – especially when you are trying to run your own business and are at the beck and call of your clients. You can’t turn business away but you can’t kill yourself making everyone happy either! We are all unique and want different things from life. Some people running their own business will work until they reach their weekly target and then take the rest of the week off. Others will be pushed by drive and ambition and set out to take over the world, bring up kids, and have a happy home and a thriving business – all at the same time!
We all have something we would love to do someday. We kid ourselves by saying when we get *there* we will: not work so hard – have time for yoga – go on a holiday – start our own business – (Insert your *there*). So where the hell is *THERE* and why can’t it be *HERE*!!! The someday you’re waiting for to make your move, learn something new (or do a base jump) CAN be today. The best advice I can ever give is to write yourself a letter. No half-hearted I can’t think of …! Tell yourself what you are happy with in your life and what you are not happy with. What do you want to do in the next 6 months? It could be simply to have a date with your partner, join the gym and actually go, start your own business. Retrain, do a new course, quit your job or move to Timbuktu! Tell yourself why you want and need these things to happen. Don’t hold back, get it all in there and then pop it in an envelope, stick it somewhere safe to open in 6 months and let your future self have a little read. Will you have done any of the things you listed? Chances are you won’t because life gets in the way. We get busy. We put everyone else before ourselves.

Instead, think about the contents of your letter every day and spend the next 6 months putting EVERYTHING you have into doing what you said you needed. Otherwise, you could reopen that same letter year after year and nothing will have changed. You will still be upset by the same things, dreaming of the same things and holding yourself back from feeling fulfilled. Nothing will have changed and that my friend is what your regrets will be! So do it. Make *there* HERE. Make your someday, TODAY and take that base jump! Start living for you, choose to be happy, smile and remember always – don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to live

Living in a small coastal town doesn't leave a lot of options for training academies or courses run close to me, so it doesn't make it an easy option to leave my two small girls to go away and study, I’d contacted a few places but all required me to leave for an amount of time and at least 4 hours of travel away. My name is Brogan I’m 27 years old, I’m a mum of two beautiful girls aged 3 and 10 months, and I’m from a small town on the far south coast of NSW Australia. I’d known from a young age that I wanted to be in the beauty industry and my head was set on being a makeup artist and hair dresser. I had a few rough bumps along the way, which included my mother leaving and left my sisters and myself to raise my then 11 year old brother. I didn't let this stop me from doing what I dreamed. If anything it made me want to focus harder and achieve my dreams. I’m now a fully qualified hair dresser, make-up artist, nail technician, and working on furthering with my lash career.
Once I contacted Kelly and we had a chat about my goals and where I’d like to get in my career, like one day having my own salon, and showing my girls that hitting your goals isn't impossible, We decided on the Beauty in a box Course. Kelly and her team have designed the perfect course for not only mums who work that can’t take time away, but for anyone who wants to not only be a lash artist but how to set up and run a successful business. I’ve only just started my course but already I’ve learnt more than I ever had in my previous lash training. I can’t wait to continue my training and see what else is in store for me. Most of us try to surround ourselves with those that support and love us. We aren’t looking for those who drag us down or make us feel small. Naturally, we are trying our best to navigate through life by building our confidence. This can be difficult within our careers as connecting to our competition may seem threatening. This comes from a lack of confidence based on uncertainty, fear, and distrust. How do I support someone who makes money doing exactly what I do? What if I lose sales? Why do I want to be reminded of someone else’s greater successes? There are many paths within this lash industry and it is okay to have your own journey while supporting someone else’s. Some lash stylists travel the world educating others on the newest and greatest techniques, while others are creating beautiful lashes for the biggest moments in their clients’ lives. Some lash stylists create innovative products, while others work behind the scenes of large companies.
All lash stylist career paths are rewarding; however, social media can make us feel otherwise. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and feel as if our successes don’t measure up. Instead of feeling down, take the time to connect, you’ll find there is so much love and support going around – yes, even from that page with 100k followers! Denis Waitley says it best,
“It’s not what you are that holds you back, it’s what you think you are not.” Start by finding your confidence. “Confidence isn’t walking into a room with your nose in the air, and thinking you are better than everyone else, it’s walking into a room and not having to compare yourself with anyone in the first place.” - Unknown Embrace the fact that there is always more to learn; be confident in your own abilities and career path. Stand tall and create a wonderful network of like-minded individuals who inspire, motivate, and push you to achieve bigger, greater accomplishments. Take comfort in knowing that you have individuality. Your career and personal goals are likely different than the lash stylist down the street. You are in control of how you nurture your success. You’ll find that complimenting and supporting other lash artists has a great return.
