This year, for the first time, La Strada takes place simultaneously in two countries. The festival turns Graz and Maribor into two intercommunicating stages of a show that sets out to discover art in the context of urban everyday life. This crossing of a border is a tribute to the Capital of Culture 2012. At the same time, it is also the programme of a festival that, now in its 15th year, is still seeking a content-based engagement with current societal phenomena. This year, therefore, La Strada tells of migration and urban change, of fluid relational systems, of consumerism and traffic, while searching at the same time for timely forms of expression in the realms of street and puppet theatre and Cirque Nouveau. The settings for performances reflect this diversity; their spectrum stretching from the streets and squares of the city to the summit of the Schöckl mountain. This year too, La Strada returns to one of the finest locations in Graz: the Opera House. Half of this year’s programme consists of in-house and co-productions. This was made possible thanks to collaboration with international networks such as IN SITU. A kind of crossing of borders, a dissolution of borders so to speak, is also manifest in this. As a producing festival and creation centre, La Strada needs exchange at an international level, which has by now seen numerous local artists cross the country’s frontier travelling for instance to Spain and France, to Germany and the Netherlands and as far as Australia and Corea. Also this year, the local scene is represented through five projects. On the one hand, this is proof of its creative force, while on the other hand it also supports La Strada’s attempt to portray the world in which we live, and to facilitate access to its rich artistic variety. It’s becoming ever more apparent that the festival is being co-developed by Graz residents – their enthusiasm and critical response has shaped and modified La Strada and, over a period of 15 years, made it such a festival of variety that is today well known far beyond Austria’s borders. So, with this in mind, here’s to a successful collaboration in 2012!

Time and again there have been attempts to explore emotional states through art: through paintings, music and drama – and now also through acrobatics. For the first time, La Strada ventures collaboration with a group from overseas that has so far scarcely been heard of in Austria. Their latest production “Sequence 8” will only come into existence this spring, making forays into the ever so dark and yet exciting worlds of human emotional life. “The 7 Fingers” (Les 7 doigts de la main) from Montreal are certainly no strangers to the scene: delicately crafted characters, acrobatics brought to perfection and elaborate choreographies characterise the group’s work which, at international level, belongs to today’s most ingenious circus companies. They develop their highly acclaimed, new-circus-projects in Quebec and indeed offer a subtle alternative to the overwhelming spectacles of the entertainment industry. Besides physical virtuosity, it is above all a tale’s intensity, always leading deep down under shimmering surfaces, that 4

matters to the 8 artists around Sebastien Soldevila and Shana Carroll. Perfect circus performance – ranging from tightrope walking, juggling and clown acts to weird acts with skateboards – serves the performers as an extraordinary means of transportation for rousing stories rich in thoughtfulness. Breathtakingly well-done and heartbreakingly emotional. This show premieres in Lyon in June and is being presented for the first time in the German-speaking world. Others conduct an orchestra. Pierre Sauvageot conducts the wind. This trained jazz musician who at one time staged the legendary “Babel.Platz.Symphonie” with more than 100 musicians on Freiheitsplatz square in Graz, has this time selected Graz people’s bestloved trip destination, constructing his “Harmonic Fields” on the summit of the Schöckl mountain. This unusual project features an enchanting mix of spectacular landscape art and auditory experience. Here Sauvageot combines wind harps and glockenspiels, singing bowls, drums, cellos, Balinese flutes and even a Klapotetz bird-scarer among hundreds of fascinating instruments in whose strings, tubes and membranes the wind explores its playground. Yet the sounds are not simply down to chance; Sauvageot ensures that there is an ingenious balance of sound and structure. “It’s important to me that there are not just strange noises circulating around here” he says. The musical experience with the spirits sent by Aeolus god of wind ultimately also arises 6

as a result of visitors’ individual reactions as they pass through the installation. Indeed this performance by the wind sometimes ends with a delicate coda, sometimes with a triumphal whilst also somewhat dissonant finale – it’s entirely dependent on wind and weather. A magical installation that oscillates in the summit’s air currents. With the support of the Oerol festival (Terschelling, NL), the SACEM and the IN SITU European network for creation in public space. Les Clandestines’ captivating female performers explore old and new Italian songs in search of the fault lines in the traditional and the modern, illustrating through melodies, poems, letters and historical documents what people’s homeland means to them. But grill barriers could be a place to sleep, a gym machine, a musical instrument and even a roof; you just have to tackle it in the right way – and this is what those two men dressed in orange are doing. And what they are doing with the grill is hilarious, since the artists are playing with the steel frame and the audience at the same time. Know anywhere better fenced off? Certainly not! Compagnie des Quidams (France) l´effet sphère Huge women carrying an unknown burden. A small man, jealously watching over a grey terrestrial globe: a sumptuous play with mythical images and magical light is what participants in this magical journey can expect. At the end of this special street show, there is a joyous act of liberation. Everyday urban ingredients transform into objects of art as a curator takes this urban galleryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visitors on a guided tour. On show are sculptures and paintings, interactive installations and performance art. Pretty soon the audience is no longer sure; is that portly old gentleman taking his dog for a walk over there a chance passer-by or a performance artist? Or both? The borders between fiction and reality suddenly become permeable, and the city becomes an entire work of art in this ready-made gallery, which plays around not only with our view of the city but also with contemporary art and the ways in which it is usually perceived. This co-production between the Belgian company Berlin and IN SITU revolves around a murder case in a small Belgian community, with people from both inside and outside the country’s borders involved. Here the Reininghaus site transforms into both a crime scene and an interrogation room on the Franco-Belgian border. Industrial installations represent several scenarios to kill the victim. Only gradually does the tour, with video sequences and live interrogation, reveal a picture of a conspiracy as weird as it is grotesque. Themes of crime and suspense are played out, dealing with interspaces and the breaching of borders. Where one border can be crossed in a fit of insanity, another is closed hermetically. A co-production in collaboration with the IN SITU European network for creation in public space.

Down below, two small boys dream of Brazil. Up above, an aeroplane is flying precisely there, and those on board include an electrician, a mathematician, Adam, Eve and a hen. It takes two puppeteers to guide the approximately ten figures featured in this delectably absurd play into the most unbelievable situations. Two puppeteers and the fantasy of Daniil Charms (1905 – 1942), the surrealist “word-jeweller” whose script-miniatures enchant a delighted readership to this day. With Charms, giant spoons float in the heavens and the dead play pool against themselves. Here in Pierre Schäfer’s charming production, the “Charms Airlines” aircraft becomes a microcosm whose absurd phases of turbulence give rise to ever crazier situations – to the point where one happily yields to their peculiar logic. Two people who get involved with each other, who embark on a journey to discover themselves and each other. With their most intimate production so far called “Mazùt”, Baro d’Evel’s artists, who last appeared in the Augarten park in 2010, return to Graz. With eloquent bodily expression they tell of two people, for whom the world has become too fast, and in which too many words are made. What if a concert grand suddenly raises itself on its only hind leg during a concert: can this be seen as a protest against the female pianist? Not at all, if Dirk and Fien are in the party: the concert grand turns into an acrobat, when both of them start up their merry-go-round of sheep. They play music and balancing, it is a real pleasure to watch; things and people sail through the air because, in this wonderfully burlesque show, it is not only our imagination that rises high. It is indeed the piano that establishes itself as a third team-mate in a performance that is brimming with music, dance and acrobatics. Juggling sheep and a trapeze act on a broom: in Dirk’s and Fien’s wonderland everything is possible. Both Flemish performers have successfully worked as solo artists for quite some time. Under the supervision of long-standing Graz favourite Leandre, a joint play has been developed for the first time, which will have both young and old in awe across the world.

A circus orchestra abandons its familiar place of work to enter the arena of the greatest circus in the world: the street. The Promised Land: for many Africans who come to Europe it is called Germany, Italy, France or Austria. One of them, nameless, is here, in a country where she expected, hoped for and dreamed of a better future, accompanied and haunted by voices from her past and by very real pests belonging to human trafficking networks. In 2010, Fiston Mujila Mwanza was city chronicler in Graz. His play “Gott ist ein Deutscher” (God is German) is about big dreams being shattered without omitting the colonial backdrop and deeply distressing migration experience. This is why a lorry turns into the stage in this controversial contemporary play about such an omnipresent yet much ignored topic. Mwanza addresses migration flows to and within Europe, the incidents and repercussions of which are all too often left to be dealt with by news coverage on a daily basis. An Ernst M. For many years Dutch photographer Henry Krul has been documenting the growing activity trends on the young contemporary street theatre scene, which has developed over the course of the past decade in Europe. From Terschelling to Tarrega, from Chalon to Graz, Krul followed actors and puppeteers, comedians, musicians and acrobats for summer after summer in order to document their performances in public space and on stage. Thus he created intense portraits and atmospheric depictions of cities, narrating the fascination of street theatre and the enthusiasm and dedication of the audience, the artistic creativity and eager endeavours, which this kind of artistic performance requires of performers. In collaboration with Atelier Jungwirth, his pictures are now shown for the first time in Austria.

The not so distant future. Guided by a visionary architect, a handful of men and women are building the town of their dreams. On a decommissioned oil platform in a forgotten corner of the world they are creating their Utopia, in which water, energy and refuse are generated and disposed of in an altogether original cycle, in which every inhabitant can make optimum use of his or her capabilities and everything coexists in the most wonderful harmony. However, after 17 joyous years, new immigrants come aboard the utopian town – and that changes things somewhat. Surviving in the face of ecological threat, people conquering new territory, striving to adjust to new circumstances, seeking tolerance and acceptance in one’s dealings with others: “Far West 2037” has a wealth of themes. Moreover it conveys a wealth of visual impressions, with the Reininghaus site becoming an ocean, in which a fourteen metre tall offshore platform lies at anchor.
