The creative city Europe’s cities were built according to the same models and currently also share the same challenges: structural change, migration, regeneration and the development of new city quarters are just a few of the related topics. Reflections on urbanity are European reflections. Artists are looking for answers, working in and with public space. Together they’re defining it anew whilst including local citizens and the local community in the process - on a quest for a joint, European identity. Since 2003, La Strada, integrated within the international network IN SITU, has been accompanying artists in their development of innovative projects in public space. To date, 180 productions have been supported. IN SITU ACT is the title of the current programme, the subsidies for which, stretching till 2020, were recently decided upon by the European Commission, thereby bringing 24 institutions from 15 nations together. With the opening production, Limits, Cirkus CirkÜr from Sweden goes to its limits, striving to overcome them. Compagnie Rara Woulib from France takes us on a nocturnal trip to undiscovered places, on a journey to our deepest fears. Young Graz-based artist Lisa Horvath, with her Spielraum Ensemble, asks herself and us: what paths are traced out by the boundaries between the self and the other, the familiar and the unfamiliar? Dutch artist duo Strijbos & Van Rijswijk will, together with us, explore the new urban quarter of 4

Graz-Reininghaus, intertwining a real walk with means drawn from the digital world. Contemporary questions can also be addressed using humour and a lust for life. And you’ll be able to find a lot of that in this year’s festival programme, in the streets and squares of the city, in the theatre, in courtyards, in the park. The artists from Cheptel Aleïkoum, Luis & Pedro Sartori do Vale and Marcel et ses drôles de femmes illustrate what contemporary circus is and can be. From Chilean Clown Murmuyo to charismatic façade climber Antoine Le Menestrel – in the 19th year of the festival too, street theatre will take over the city, right up to the grand finale with Transe Express on Freiheitsplatz square. International puppet theatre artists will pull the strings behind great historical personalities and make Salome and Andy Warhol come to life on stage. And: 21 shows are specially designed for our little guests. Of course there will also be music and dance: with Zygos Brass Band in the streets of the city, at Open Dance in Kaiserfeldgasse and Zwischen den Bäumen in Ortweinplatz square. Together we will build a “creative city” and both artists and the entire team are looking forward to it. Werner Schrempf Artistic Director, Festival La Strada 5

Cirkus Cirkör

SE

Limits “When I was little, I thought that people were moving around the Earth in order to keep the globe in equilibrium. When we close borders and build fences, we cause this balance to be lost and the Earth tips up”, says Tilde Björfors, who has been applying her artistic energy to borders and overcoming them since founding her Cirkus Cirkör. Never was this topic more current than now, and the celebrated production “Limits” deals with the question as to how real or imaginary borders of all kinds are. As to the extent to which the boundaries of what is possible through acrobatics and artistry can be stretched and perspectives can be stood on their heads, this is demonstrated in a unique manner by this year’s La Strada opening production, presenting the audience with a real test of perception. nouveau cirque Since childhood days, we have held our breath at the circus, fascinated by this very special atmosphere between circus ring and circus dome. “Cirque nouveau“ has preserved this kind of magic and expanded on it by engaging with the big themes of our time. This year, grand companies such as Cirkus Cirkör and Cheptel Aleïkoum along with Marcel et ses drôles de femmes and the Sartori do Vale brothers, are proof of how deep a relationship the circus builds with its audience. They will show us impressive acrobatics, make us reflect – and marvel, just like back then ...

“The word ‘circus’ is often used disparagingly, but I think the opposite is true – the world should practice more circus!” Tilde Björfors Founder of Cirkus Cirkör

Luis & Pedro Sartori do Vale

BR FI

Dois Inspired by classical myths and characters like William Tell, Luis and Pedro Sartori do Vale get to grips with their symbolic weapon, the “bow and arrow”. During residence in Graz in 2015, these brothers from Brazil developed a production somewhere between comedy and tragedy, packed with risk, precision and concentration, surprise and fragility. This year they present the piece as a stage production that fills an evening.

Cheptel Aleïkoum

FR

Maintenant ou Jamais & Fanfare Circa Tsuica The great dream of a better world in which there is room for differing opinions; the artists of Cheptel Aleïkoum believe in it and ensure that it comes alive again in their circus tent. With the powerful, intoxicating music of a “Circus Brass Band”, with great acrobatics on wheels and see-saws, on the trapeze, in the air and on the ground, continuously interacting with the audience, these exceptional artists create a world that’s crazy and humorous and makes you dizzy. And with “Fanfare Circa Tsuica”, Cheptel Aleïkoum brings a high-energy mix of Balkan sounds and American jazz to the streets.

Marcel et ses drôles de femmes

FR

Miss Dolly Failing with style at main square: when Marcel et ses drôles de femmes swing from trapeze to trapeze and it doesn’t always look like the realisation of the dream of flying, it’s actually on purpose – and immensely entertaining. Because these four graduates of those legendary artists’ academies, the National Circus School of Rosny Sous-Bois and National Centre of Circus Arts in Châlons-en-Champagne, don’t plummet inadvertently from dizzying heights; rather, they counter the risk with conscious naivety, lightness, professionalism and, above all, with a huge amount of humour. A breathtaking production, described by the artists as “a poem of strange bodies, a language that speaks to all, a mixture of trembling and adrenaline, limitless commitment and a circus of hideous beauty“.

street theatre It’s the most immediate form of theatre, doesn’t need a curtain or a stage: street theatre reaches people where they live and shows them the places of their everyday lives from entirely new perspectives. This year, for instance, when Rara Woulib enter unknown terrain with the people of Graz in an eerie procession, or when Compagnie Lézards Bleus climbs the façades in town. Theatre on the street is fabulous fun; when strolling along the streets with the Wandering Orquestra or experiencing with co.LABse everything that can go wrong as soon as a hip, new restaurant opens. Not to mention the grand finale on Freiheitsplatz square!

“After my visit the walls will still stand. But they will be different because your point of view will have changed.“ Antoine Le Menestrel, Compagnie Lézards Bleus

Murmuyo

CL

¿Quieres ser mi amigo? Last year Murmuyo “managed” the traffic in a wonderful way and won the hearts of passers-by; this year he returns in search of friends. ¿Quieres ser mi amigo? – Do you want to be my friend? – is the title of his new production, which has people and a town plan at its centre – and ultimately, for sure, no end of new friendships.

ES

Pelat It all starts with a man and a tree trunk and develops into a performance based on a study of the human body and movement, the behaviour of the audience, technical ability and traditions. Dance, theatre and circus are unified in virtuoso style by Joan Català. What’s more, this fascinating production also has something to say about sharing, listening and, moreover, being part of a whole.

Zwischen den Bäumen Sometimes there’s Fellini playing on Ortweinplatz square too. With their production called “Zwischen den Bäumen”, eleven young people from the TaO! workshops and five musicians bring the flair of an Italian piazza to Graz. ES

What wonderful madness: first a strange orchestra with old-fashioned instruments turns up in an even stranger vehicle. At this point the flamboyant musicians would indeed be ready to start their concert – but nobody knows where they’re playing, where it’s all headed or whom to talk to. Well that’s just fine and doesn’t matter one jot!

FR

L’ Aimant Antoine Le Menestrel climbs up the façades of the buildings, dances to the rhythm of the architecture and interprets the city’s walls anew. In his piece called “L’ Aimant”, this façade climber is in search of that great love, crests balconies, taps on windows, presents roses or a smile – and hopefully ultimately finds his Juliet.

La bourse ou la vie? In his staging of “your money or your life”, Antoine Le Menestrel, the “artist of elevation”, toys with the fears and decision processes of inhabitants of the façades of the city. A performance that turns on the question of what is greater, courage or fear. When it ends, the walls will indeed still be standing, as for so long – but perhaps thought processes will have changed.

Rara Woulib

FR

Bizangos Holy clowns, story tellers, monsters and a fortune teller like the erstwhile Cassandra take their audience along on a journey on which long forgotten memories and feelings are relived in unexpected places. The artists of Compagnie Rara Woulib know that binding force and how to make superb use of processions in order to bring out the characteristics not only of special places but also of participants in the night time. In forlorn areas of the city, the actors awaken an atmosphere of isolation, despair, emptiness and fear of the invisible through the media of theatre, music and the impromptu; all those feelings with roots in our childhood. An eerily exciting journey through the city and to one’s personal fears.

puppet theatre They pull the strings behind renowned personalities of contemporary history, wear masks and create entire universes out of paper. The masters of puppet theatre combine craftsmanship with acting and, with the greatest of ease, they provoke the entire audience into hearty laughter. But to believe that puppet theatre is for kids is a misconception: productions such as “The Little Witch“ or “Die gestiefelte Katze“ are indeed primarily aimed at a younger audience, but the story about Salome and the evening with Andy Warhol are definitively adult fare too.

“If I succeed in turning adults into children once again, then I’ll be quite happy: because children need fairy tales!“ Daniel Wagner, Theater Zitadelle

Handmaids Berlin

DE

Salome She is a dangerous person and dares to wish for something unbelievable: to be equal and emancipated. Just like that, even though she’s a woman. Salome has always stirred things up, and so it is again this year at La Strada. The artists of Handmaids Berlin have addressed the many facets of this dangerous character and offer the free-thinking woman a new stage, on which the story is portrayed of Salome personifying the powerful, self-determined disempowerment of the existing system and struggle for more freedom and equality. As a paper universe in which rulers are folded up and kingdoms torn apart. But questions are also asked of the prophets – ultimately we do indeed need to know what resides in the texts of that woman who survived the bible and dances in every third night club.

United Puppets

DE

A No Man Show – An Evening with Andy Warhol If Andy Warhol chats with Mickey Mouse and Nico sings along, that’s intriguing. United Puppets from Berlin invite you to an evening of “A No Man Show – An Evening with Andy Warhol” with the grand master of art, self-portrayal, medialization and consumption, looking back from today’s perspective at the concept of Andy Warhol. Here they follow the tracks left behind by his Factory, revive the old myths of US pop culture and allow the almost one-metre-tall, pallid puppet of the master to meet his globalised revenants. The basis for this piece of puppet theatre and installation project is a large theatre project that Warhol developed together with Peter Sellers and Lewis Allen for Broadway, but was unable to realise before his death. Till now as, inspiringly animated, he does indeed appear with it on stage in Graz.

community art When the boundaries between protagonists and audience are blurred, and the spectators become part of the performance, community art is born, arguably the most intensive art form in public space. For years now, La Strada has played a pioneering role in the promotion of this genre, and emphasizes that with a total of a full five productions this year. Which will make people in tents, on squares and in the park become part of art with all the senses – despite their being blindfolded or wearing headphones.

“With Final Season we leave the protected theatre space – we venture outdoors. Spectators and stage are no longer separated – everything is in movement. There isn’t just one point of view anymore, rather there are exactly as many as there are visitors.” Lisa Horvath, Spielraum Ensemble

Transe Express

FR

Mù, cinematique des fluides The grand La Strada finale takes us into a land full of acrobatics, poetry and fantasy. With a ballet between heaven and earth, surrealistic creatures from other dimensions blur the boundaries between this world and the next, water creatures conquer the airspace, floating acrobats douse the audience with water and everything shines in fluorescent colours. With his “journey from the Earth to the Moon“, “Mù“ follows the tracks of Jules Verne and shows his marvelling audience how graceful and, at the same time, monumental it can look to move between illusionistic reality and realistic illusions. By means of contemporary circus, the French artists ensure gaping mouths and powerful emotions – taking the odd spectator quite literally to dizzying heights. Fina

CIRCUS TALES IN GRAZ With its current production Cirkopolis, internationally acclaimed Cirque Éloize presents contemporary circus at the highest level – a spirited act of liberation made up of circus, dance and theatre. By means of video projections and turning walls, director Jeannot Painchaud creates a futuristic world of images reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s legendary silent movie, Metropolis. The desire for freedom drives acrobats and dancers to physical extremes. They rise against monotony and free themselves from the claws a of a technocratic city. The wheel of time begins to spin and, with it, the artists‘ bodies – breathtaking dance with the Cyr wheel captivates the audience. On poles, the springboard and whilst juggling, the sky will be conquered. Ultimately, through their light-footed dance, the world is at their feet, until the line between reality and fantasy dissolves. An explosion of colours, pace, music and humour that no longer allows space for anonymity or solitude. When the impossible becomes possible, Cirkopolis has touched all our senses, using no words at all.

And, last but not least, here you’ll find the links to all artists’ social media presence. ... and for those who always want to be on time, there’s “qando Graz”, the app of Graz Linien: up-to-date departure times for busses and trams in zone 101, route queries, announcements and news in real time.

Both apps can be downloaded for free from the App Store and the Google Play Store!
