On location: city For a period of nine days, the heart of the festival pumps movement and inspiration through the city’s streets, filling them with life. Year after year, the festival seeks new challenges, overcoming obstacles together with the audience, in order to keep this enlivening pulse going. La Strada aspires to more than entertainment and popularity. La Strada seeks to leave behind indelible marks on both the city and the people. The vision being that all those who get in touch with the festival become part of it, allowing themselves to be taken along by the artist to develop new ideas and thoughts – and this year it’s already for the 20th time. On the following pages, read all about a programme that harks back to two decades of festival history – to a programme totally in the here and now that deals with topics of our times – to a programme that lets us join the artists in looking into the future, spotting visions of potential. We wish you a lovely, relaxed but also exciting time at La Strada 2017.

Machine de Cirque

CA

The five exceptional artists of this young, Canadian ensemble are all multi-talented, delivering alongside their artistry plenty of proof of their musical skills. Directed by Vincent Dubé, they create a unique, surreal world. Fifteen years after the apocalypse, they arrive at their altogether peculiar survival strategy. Their route to salvation is via an absolutely amazing machine – it’s like a spare parts store, and they play masterfully with the parts. Always ready to bare their bodies and soles and make us laugh, move us and overwhelm us.

nouveau cirque It merges the magic of traditional circus with tackling contemporary topics. It can be loud and captivating but also engaging and breathlessly silent. The La Strada Festival has been sharing its enthusiasm for the new circus for two decades. Long since, Graz has become one of the most important centres of Cirque Nouveau in Europe. And, due to new national subsidy options, this could be developed further, bringing yet more depth rather than drum-rolls to tents, stages and the streets of the city.

Compagnie Daraomaï

FR

TiraVol French-Catalan artists Agnès Fustagueras and David Soubies take their audience along to a levitating universe brim-full of emotions, in which they celebrate togetherness and differences between man and woman. At, in and on an iron labyrinth, the two artists acrobatically deal with their relationship, embark together on an expedition and celebrate the diversity of sexes. And narrate a moving story between illusion and reality.

Cirque Aïtal

Pour le meilleur et pour le pire “For better or for worse” is the title of this wonderful production of new circus – and it is on a journey through precisely such circumstances that the acrobatic couple Kati Pikkarainen and Victor Cathala are taking their audience. Balancing, flying through the air, holding onto and lifting each other, the two artists are staging their relationship. Letting the audience partake in the development, tension and rhythm of human togetherness; argument, reconciliation and love in the circus ring. Thus presenting their very own interpretation of contemporary circus: down-to-earth and no glitter – car radios, exhaust gas and wonderful acrobatics included.

From dashing balancing acts to a wild-whirly performance on the see-saw – the French-Finnish couple are pushing the envelope. Beauty and elegance, passion and unfiltered sensitivity are always on top here. — Le Monde, Paris Tent in Augarten: 29/7, 30/7, 31/7, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8 8 pm / Recommended from age 6 Tickets:

Sol Bémol What would you actually call a group of pianos played by several pianists at the same time? Would that be a piano orchestra? And what would you call it if, in addition, acrobats climb over these pianos, living out their love for music and circus alike? At La Strada it’s called Sol Bémol and is a wonderful production for the whole family that beautifully touches all senses with its impressive stage setting, music and acrobatics.

street theatre Over recent decades, La Strada has done pioneering work in the conquest of public space, bringing art projects directly to the people of the city without any barriers. This proximity to both art and the audience at the same time ensures that artists such as Chilean clown Murmuyo develop their projects in Graz, and that artists’ collectives, such as the Styrian-Catalan group ElÊctrico 28, are able to present their work. In this way, an interdisciplinary, omni-faceted festival is created and installations, interaction and musical performances are given the same space as productions in theatres.

Murmuyo

CL

A Fuera! Three years ago the city fell in love with Murmuyo – and this love is indeed requited. First the Chilean street artist just blithely hitchhiked, bringing traffic to a halt. Then, last year, he looked for friends and found them. And now he wants to build a house; once again, with the help of city folk. Given how the love story between him and Graz inhabitants has developed over recent years, this will be a very special home. starting point at Stadtmuseum / Elingasse WEIZ: 1/8 / 6 pm STAINZ: 2/8 / 6.30 pm starting point at Rathaus starting point at Franziskanerplatz: 3/8, 4/8 / 11 am starting point at Südtirolerplatz: 3/8, 4/8 / 7 pm starting point at MURPARK: 5/8 / 11 am starting point at Südtirolerplatz: 5/8 / 5 pm A coproduction with La Strada Graz. The Kaleidophones

In a way, the world is like a huge musical composition that’s going on all the time, without a beginning and presumably, without an ending. We can improve it or we can destroy it; we can add more noises or we can add more beautiful sounds. — Raymond Murray Schafer, Canadian composer and sound scientist You certainly have to adjust to this unusual head dress, which enables the transformation of sounds of the city. However, you will be rewarded with a unique experience that Michel Risse will make audible for his audience. This French audioartist sensitises perception by artificially enhancing our natural hearing. During the La Strada festival, 16 sculptures on the grounds of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz will invite visitors to encounter brand new acoustic experiences and discover unexpected soundscapes.

Music by Philip Glass and Michael Nyman is part of this human-machine synthesis of art.

Coup d’Savate It will be colourful and loud, when the nine gentlemen of Les Traine-Savates set out to conquer the city’s streets: in yellow, orange, red and violet, wearing flares, Elvis kits and Bowie-like costumes, even just visually they’re paying tribute to the legendary 1970s. Lance moi en l’air “Throw me into the air” is the title of this production, with which the British artist duo will awaken in its audience the desire to be able to fly for once too. And all of this with subtle aesthetics of flowing transitions, making this dance project a gorgeous experience on one of these balmy summer evenings.

puppet theatre Puppet theatre connects people in many ways: children with adults, fantasy worlds with contemporary social topics and the audience with artists and their moving stories. It is very important to the La Strada festival to support, co-produce and stage high quality artistic work in this field, thereby contributing to ensuring space for modern fairytales for younger and older people in our times too.

community art Together with the inhabitants, artists are reconquering the squares and streets of the city. In community art, the borders between protagonists and the audience blur, stories are developed and told together, people are brought together and the city is viewed and experienced from completely new perspectives. A festival like La Strada creates the (free) space necessary for such artistic endeavours by enabling residencies and making sure that the entire city can be used as a production space for art.

Mnemosyne (goddess of memory) What is your favourite place in or around Graz, what colour is it and what memories do you associate with it? Italian artist Matteo Lanfranchi interviewed people from Graz about the places to which they feel some emotional connection and created a map of memories with the results. In the course of the festival, the map will continue to grow and draw a picture of how people and their life paths change the city. Lanfranchi’s installation connects individual memories with the collective memory of a place.

KompleX KapharnaüM

FR

Do Not Clean People have a strange relationship with their rubbish, which combines disgust and attraction with guilt and passion. French artists’ collective KompleX KapharnaüM makes this relationship strikingly visible. Here people at the margins of society, as well as consumers with a critical attitude towards wastefulness, have their say. Here it becomes clear that too much can be just as stressful as too little. The combination of high-tech and the respectful treatment of people and their history draws an enduringly moving picture of how our society deals with what is left over

While having Soup Actually, when was it last that the street was a place to talk to each other and discuss things? Really looking at each other whilst talking, no likes or dislikes but accompanied by the will to listen properly to the other person while seeking to understand? The production “While having Soup” from Canada offers a special opportunity that should be seized. Passers-by can spend 20 minutes discussing with another person a particular topic that currently moves the city and its people, whilst having a plate of soup. And afterwards to sum up in just one sentence what had been the content of their conversation. Truly a challenge – but maybe one that we should go for again some time. Hin & her. Hüben wie drüben. The EU centre of art laboratory Graz will be opened at a shop in the city centre of Graz, for the duration of La Strada; a place for thought, a workshop, an exhibition space. Together with a group of young adults, who are just finishing their compulsory schooling in Graz, here questions are asked and thoughts made visible: the topic being “Fortress Europe”. On the basis of Ödön von Horváth’s burlesque “Hin und Her”, artists from Kosovo and Austria will discuss border issues of our times: What are European values? What structure is hidden inside? How does the EU taste, how’s it moving? What do EU-topias look like? And is it really a shop – with opening hours and transparent borders?

34

Access to the EU centre: please apply for your personal project pass between 28th July and 5th August at the Kunstlabor Graz office at Jakominiplatz 15, 1st floor, 8010 Graz (office hours: 9 am to 2 pm) or by email to kunstlabor_graz@uni-t.org

On location: Europe For 15 years now, the La Strada Festival has been working with national and international artists and its network partners on developing artistic creation in public space. IN SITU is the name of the EU project now at the heart of the two project phases, IN SITU ACT & IN SITU PLATFORM. Together we are working on topics of urban coexistence, developing productions in close cooperation with the community, population and local actors, always in connection with the urban surroundings and architecture of a Europe of the present and of the future. Together we are building up Graz as a centre of creativity and helping artists to project themselves internationally, like the Austrian group of artists called Liquid Loft, whose project Foreign Tongues was just recently selected as one of the IN SITU pilot projects.

Over recent years, contemporary circus has become unimaginably multi-faceted – ranging from intimate, intensive performances to involved productions on a grand scale. In order to illustrate this breadth more than ever before, this winter Cirque Noël will be performing in parallel at both of its traditional venues, with two outstanding productions: “Réversible” by the Canadian company The 7 Fingers, a performance of striking strength in which quiet, graceful moments alternate with real adrenaline-rushes, and the wonderfully creative project “A Simple Space” by the Australian company Gravity & Other Myths, an intimate staging that rides on great physicality, plenty of winks and great excitement. Spoilt for choice – but those wishing to see both productions get a discount and don’t have to choose.
