“Our interest is directed towards the rich variety of reality in people’s lives and the stories hidden behind.”

Space for everyone Our passion is directed towards artistic work that takes the rich variety of reality in people’s lives and the stories hidden behind that, and uses it as the poetic foundation for artistic productions. Participation up close, helping to shape the space in which we live and collectively finding how to live together in diversity – La Strada sees all of this as a driver of transformation and urban development. To this end we take to the street, seek spaces for democratic participation and breach limits. It’s a process that builds on time and long-term collaboration. In After/Dopo, the Italian company Effetto Larsen is using the malt house in Graz-Reininghaus to create a place of altogether personal reflection on what we want to leave behind and let go. In Made in Graz, choreographer Joanne Leighton joins 99 dance-inspired people from Graz in the Stadtpark, using their bodies to draw a moving portrait of the city. With Studio Cité, Benjamin Vandewalle creates a playground of curiosities that turns our pictures of and inside ourselves upside down. Exploring alleys, places and gardens backwards – made possible by Johannes Bellinkx’s Reverse, an audio-visual walk. Going backwards. Our audience gives us strength to tread new paths and reclaim spaces. For as long as there is a majority prepared to share that space, there will be space for everyone. To be amazed, to reflect and to dance.

FLIP Fabrique

CA

Attrape-moi After several acclaimed guest performances by 7 Fingers and Cirque Éloize, this summer La Strada will introduce another great group from Québec to its audience. The six artists of FLIP Fabrique tell the story of old friends who, after years, meet again at their former summer retreat and rediscover their own personal corners of paradise. From their bodies they build multi-storey walls, dance vertically and inspire with probably the world’s best hula-hoop number. Happy, full of energy, connected, intertwined – simply beautiful.

Circus Ronaldo

BE

Fidelis Fortibus “The show must go on” – this classic circus promise is always true. Even if all the artists have already died. Thus Danny Ronaldo, a clown who simply refused to die, takes on the challenge, and in best tradition, he makes his audience laugh, reflect and dream in the circus tent.

Les filles du renard pâle

FR

Résiste “Anything can happen”, is the motto of Belgian highwire walker Johanne Humblet. The charismatic artist, who began her career at the circus school in Brussels before moving to Paris in 2003, explores artistic performance possibilities on the tightrope, developing breathtaking and intense performances. At La Strada 2019 she shows her new production Résiste, accompanied by musician Johan Candoré. Together the two artists tell a story of ups and downs, of loneliness and great moments – always having the unexpected in mind.

Gravity & Other Myths

AU

A Simple Space If seven exceptional acrobats decide to defy gravity, the audience might feel dizzy. Especially when being so close to the action. In this show spectators will literally see the sweat and hear their breath as the artists explore their physical limits and try to break them. Staying both raw and fine, they will leave their comfort zone again and again, taking their audience with them. After all, gravity does not surrender without resistance.

Cie Oposito & Décor Sonore

Le Cinématophone What might a “band of eight musicians and a diva” mean? An exciting performance when companies Décor Sonore and Oposito are behind it. Eight creatures – half human, half loudspeaker – create fascinating sound images, conducted by a graceful woman. She takes over the baton in this extraordinary procession through the city, in which opera and waltz sounds, interrupted telephone conversations and animal sounds fuse into a wondrously bizarre sound installation.

Arrived When Spanish artist Adrian Schvarzstein and Lithuanian dancer Jurate Sirvyte Rukstele arrive in Graz this summer, they will ask more than just “Where am I and where do I go?” They come from the past and Klezmer music gives an idea about why they once had to leave. 20 years! rendez-vous It was all actually over already: After more than 400 concerts and 15 years, La Fanfare Jo Bithume split up and the artists went their own ways. But somehow the 20 musicians and actors, who for so many years had been a sparkling mixture of city orchestra, philharmonic orchestra and jazz band, can’t let each other go. Fortunately for the La Strada audience. Together, through their furious street music and theatre show, they make the city resonate for days on end.

How is your bird? It is well known that he was a wonderful enfant terrible, but the Studio Dan ensemble, MC Rhine and Bobby Slivovsky (5/8erl in Ehr’n) also show that Frank Zappa could be a real hit for children. The abstract music production tells the story of an outsider on the basis of this legendary artist’s musical biography. Follow the Rabbit will show what they can expect there already this year in a showing where music is the focus, and maybe a little pond water too.

Made in Graz Together with Joanne Leighton, 99 people from Graz will draw a moving portrait of their city as part of this community art project in the Stadtpark. With Made in Graz, the Belgian-Australian dancer and choreographer is creating a project with and for all generations, like in the more than 40 other cities where she has already realised this choreography. The performance draws life from the combination of separate individuals in a constant metamorphosis; the common movements are reminiscent of rivers, waterfalls, rocks and landscapes.

Studio Cité Those who are willing might experience wondrous things in Benjamin Vandewalle’s Studio Cité. The Belgian artist transforms Tummelplatz square into a fairground, a panopticon the biggest curiosities of which will be found in our own perception. The installations spread across the square will open up exciting new perspectives on our surroundings, our images and reflections, and of course on ourselves and the city in which we live.

Tummelplatz: 27/7, 28/7, 29/7 / Recommended from age 8 The participative installations can be visited daily any time from 3 pm to 8 pm. A pilot project of the international street performance network IN SITU.

Reverse It also works the other way round. Johannes Bellinkx shows how we change our own perception of our city when walking one and a half kilometres backwards through familiar streets and alleys, backyards and buildings. Those who join this performance somewhere between theatre and installation might learn a lot about themselves, their own perception and the power of daily habits. Starting point at Volksgarten: 1/8, 2/8, 3/8 / 3 pm to 8 pm Course starts every 3‘ (times on the timed tickets) Introduction: 15‘ before start / We recommend comfortable shoes Recommended from age 13 Length: 60‘ per person Timed tickets € 5 uniform price (group reductions available through advance sales) Available at Graz Tourismus in Herrengasse 16. Global Networks. Local Nodes. Internationally oriented festivals like La Strada see themselves as carrying a particular responsibility – to create those conditions necessary for artists to develop innovative productions. Conditions that anticipate creation phases stretching over years, that enable reflection and concentrated work on themes relevant to society. That allow the audience to be included in the process of production. In order to push interaction and collaboration between local and international artists, La Strada relies on the IN SITU network, which is active worldwide. Since it was founded in 2003, the network of 24 partner institutions in 15 countries has given both conceptual and financial support to over 200 artists in the development of innovative creations in public space, including more than 20 companies in Austria. In this year’s programme, four IN SITU performer(-group)s will be interacting with the people of Graz: Benjamin Vandewalle, Joanne Leighton, Johannes Bellinkx and Effetto Larsen. The latter company was already here in March this year for a residency and engaged in intensive examination of Graz people’s experiences. The composer and IN SITU artist Ray Lee was also a guest in Graz. In his guest lecture Sound and Wonder at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts in March he gave some advance insights into his new production called Congregation. This participative outdoor project will be showing at La Strada 2020.

Kitt Johnson / X-act MELLEMRUM Encounters

DK

Because collaboration is built on trust and that does indeed need time, several artists involved in next year’s programme have already been busying themselves with Graz and its residents for some time now. Danish choreographer Kitt Johnson will join Debbie Adams of the Seddwell Community Center in immersing herself in the district of Gries. There she will visit artists and communities that will take part next year in her MELLEMRUM Encounters. Performative tours of urban areas, which seek out the unique (hi)stories of people. The poetic performance While No One Is Watching by Austrian choreographers Alex Deutinger and Alexander Gottfarb deals with local experts from the area of security, journalism and activism. The two artists were invited by La Strada to an IN SITU hot house in Terschelling, where they engaged in intensive work with programme directors and international artists on productions in the process of creation, addressing questions of protection, security and culture of demonstration in public space. Showing at La Strada 2020. When choreographer Joanne Leighton works with 99 danceinspired people from Graz this year on the performance Made in Graz, these people will also become an important part of a project close to La Strada’s heart. An all-year community art project in 2020 that creates a completely new connection between the city centre and Graz-Reininghaus. Werner Schrempf / Artistic Director
