La Strada is heading out too. With artists and audience together, little by little it’s been reconquering the city for the people for 18 years now. It explores new places and expands perspectives. This year, nine of the twenty four productions have been created in co-operation with La Strada, supported by the IN SITU international network, with which the festival has been working on the promotion and promotion of innovative art since 2003, and 9 productions are made by local artists. Together we gaze deeply into a Europe of the present, continuously seeking the themes of our times. Together we work with and in the urban environment, juxtaposing urban and rural environments with one another and inviting people to tread this path with us. We look forward to a festival programme that’s full of variety and are already looking ahead to next year, when “The Vigil” by Belgian-Australian choreographer Joanne Leighton will be inviting Graz and its residents to keep watch over their city during sunrise and sunset for 365 days of a year. And what awaits us this year? Eventful and evocative days. The artists and the La Strada team have been preparing the programme for a whole year now. We look forward to exploring part of this path with you again this summer, from July 31st till August 8th.

CCC – closed circuit circus
The French collective use their contemporary circus to create new worlds that recall strident stages, other lives, movement and balance. This group of artists also unpack Moroccan circus stories, a Russian hypnotist and carpets from their numerous travels. And the knowledge that only through these odysseys is the path created.
With a fine touch and precision, Zweintopf explore the increasing monitoring of urban public space and exposure of the individual, observed every day by the invisible eyes of surveillance cameras. Who is actually working behind the scenes here, who is observing, comparing, evaluating? And above all, to what end? Coproduction with IN SITU

Michael Jackson is alive! The aging musician lives in an asylum, sees images from his childhood and his career flitting by, and can’t decide whether he’s Peter Pan or the King of Pop. In a production by Simon Meusburger, Austrian puppeteer Nikolaus Habjan reveals the man behind the controversial persona.

Pinguin People
The “acrobatic brass band” inspires audiences to clap, dance, laugh and encourages people to kiss anyone they want to, there and then. The musical accompaniment for happy hearts is a mixture of Balkan sounds and American jazz, radiating incredible energy.
Should a penguin be pleased about global warming? Should a female penguin fall in love with a polar researcher? Questions and answers to occupy a small penguin colony in the Antarctic. A play set in an ice world in upheaval.

Open Dance
As part of their residence in Graz, the brothers are developing their new production, in which they focus on that deeply symbolic weapon. The bow and arrow. In circuslike scenes between drama and comedy, they address concepts such as risk, precision and concentration, forever returning to the special relationship between brothers.
La Strada invites everyone to dance, excludes traffic and changes the city’s rhythm completely for three days. Graz people can expect moving nights at the “Open Dance”, starting on the first evening when the Serbian Quinteto Beltango waft traditional and contemporary Tango sounds into the summer breeze. On the second night, Ensemble Mas’ta will join Irina Karamarkovic and Daniel Doujenis on an artistic journey through time to Greece at the beginning of the 20th century, to bring the music of Rebétiko or “Greek blues” to Graz. And on the third evening, the wonderfully crazy Orchestre International du Vetex conquers Kaiserfeldgasse.

Hello and Goodbye
On the cusp between hardship and poetry, with planks, gas cylinders and a mini-digger, the French trio give a breathtaking balancing act. Like “Extrémités” in 2013 , this cirque nouveau production called “Extension” explores the search for equilibrium and trust in a world that can collapse at any moment.
What would my decision have been? Kunstlabor Graz takes the stories of people from all over Europe, who have moved, emigrated, immigrated or are still on the way, and presents them for a reality-check. During a tour through Liebenau, visitors ask themselves precisely those questions about fate that once confronted the protagonists. Coproduction with IN SITU

Grandma is far from pleased: that robber Hotzenplotz has nabbed her coffee machine! Together with Kasperl and Seppl, this determined old lady heads off to hunt down the thief and, on the way, she encounters adventures and Petrosilius Zwackelmann, the evil wizard.
Boots and Roots Tracking down the ancient songs of the American Deep South: these French artists bring to life the music of the Mississippi Delta, Louisiana, Virginia and Tennessee, and use melodies, poems, letters and historical documents to suggest what lies behind these myths of wilderness, displacement and everyday life. A stirring performance with a rich variety of sounds ranging from folk song to lullaby. Coproduction

Dorothee Steinbauer gives a voice to the halftrained chimpanzee that, each evening, is at the service of the ape Red Peter in Kafka’s “Report to an Academy”, and merges fact, fiction and fantasies into a disturbingly plausible life story in which questions of free will, social coercion and self-determination arise at every moment. On Lisa’s birthday lots of presents await her, but one of them has a special rattle to it: inside is a bouncy little baby, who screams and wants to be entertained all the time – lots of lovely chaos! A play about wishes, dreams and disappointments.
Eléctrico 28 Zwischen den Tassen
Dancers and dance-loving seniors, mezzo soprano Anoki von Arx as well as a choir with students from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz : together in this moving choreography, they examine the mighty phenomenon of “weather”. With great sensitivity, Anna Schrefl connects her performers’ capabilities and forms of expression as they merge into this performance of dance, text and music. In the end, they’re all dead: Siegfried, Gunther, Hagen and Kriemhild. Only Brunhild remembers. From her patchy recollections she tells of a somewhat different series of events, in which the Nibelungs engage in a knife-edge struggle with truth, love and living, loyalty and death. An intimate play, with puppets and music, about the depths of human nature. Weiz: 04/08 - Graz: 05/08, 06/08 - Tickets
At the border between fiction and reality, past and present, our perception of the beautiful theatrics of everyday life is honed. Graz artist Alina Stockinger and her team take their audience along for an altogether special discovery of the city. What is street and what is stage here, who are the passers-by and who the protagonists, what is actually part of the performance?
On the La Strada website you’ll find all productions, performance dates, times and venues as well as ticket information at a glance – also interesting news, downloads and background information about La Strada and the IN SITU European network.

CL
Hard times for public order! Because Murmuyo and Metrayeta are known for fearlessly conquering the streets and provocatively putting the rules out of action. These Chilean street performers examine the city under a magnifying glass in their particular style; with a wink and a jig, inimitably, playfully and sometimes quite audaciously too.

In “The King”, this outstanding puppeteer follows an ageing pop star, whose best times are already over and who now has to tackle the question of whether a super star can become a normal person again. Subtly humorous, as always. 07/08, 08/08 - In English - Tickets

Looking for Brunhild
Sculpture, mask theatre and young people from various different cultures: Nigerian-Styrian artist Samson Ogiamien joins young people in several workshops to produce masks, which they then bring to life, with the help of Stefanie Oettl and director-duo “Theatre Fragile”, in the public space. New pathways will be revealed and visions developed – and once rigid masks will suddenly come to life.
The emergency exit at the old people’s home is open and the seven senior residents set off to dive once more into that vibrant life outside, albeit finding the movements trickier, their memories patchier and themselves that bit more frail now. These artists address the questions, experiences, memories and wishes surrounding growing older in a world that celebrates youth.

Der Räuber Hotzenplotz
They move rumbustiously through the city streets, mixing the spirit of the Balkans with the colours of Latin America, with an African touch and a little Mediterranean inspiration. These virtuoso musicians delight all with their own compositions and spontaneous solos, relishing playing both with and against one another.

In The 7 Fingers’ big communal kitchen there’s room for stories about love, childhood, loss and mishaps. As with every good dish, this cirque nouveau production also needs a lot of ingredients: the artists, actors and performers tell their life stories, of their dreams, experiences and roots through spectacular acrobatics, with specially arranged music and in quiet moments too.
