elista The city grew in the middle of the steppe that stretches far beyond the horizon to the four winds. The root of the name of Elista is the Kalmyk word “elst” – “sandy”. In relation to other Russian cities Elista is still a kid. It was born at the end of the nineteenth century and included only fifteen households. Tragic pages in the history of Elista are associated with the period of the Great Patriotic War. At first – from August till December, 1942 – the city was occupied by German troops, and in December, 1943, all the Kalmyks without exception were deported to Siberia, Kazakhstan and Central Asia. In memory of those evil days the architect Sergey Kurneev and the sculptor Ernest Neizvestny built one of the most impressive monuments of Elista – the memorial complex “Exodus and Return”. The monument is a hill in the steppe with a black sculpture on top, depicting entwined human bodies. On one side of the monument there are habitation quarters, on the other – the boundless steppe. When you see the monument, it gives you goose bumps. Despite its small area, Elista is reasonably considered as a chess town. Since the mid 90’s the world championships have been held here – the former president of Kalmykia Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been the president of the International Chess Federation for many years. You can play chess everywhere, even on the street. All the parks are equipped with huge chessboards and figures for this purpose. More recently, Elista became a Buddhist center, the only one in Europe. There were no Buddhist temples in the whole of Kalmykia during the Soviet period, neither operational nor closed, and now there are two large khuruls in Elista. The largest one is “The Golden Mansion of Buddha Shakyamuni” with the highest statue of Buddha in Europe. The city has obtained its own individuality and is unlike any other city of Russia. It is getting more and more interesting for tourists.

ss-7 epilogue to the desert

elista – maikop By now competitor’s odometers read almost four and a half thousand kilometers since the start of the race, but there’s only two more days to go and the hardest stages are already behind. The start of the next section was only 2km from the bivouac in Elista so no morning liaison was needed… the race started straight away with 337 kilometres of “spéciaux” and then a further 440 more kilometres of road section to the next bivouac in Maikop. Desolate steppes remain behind, and now the eyes are pleased with views of the Caucasus Range. The landscapes were so beautiful that it was impossible not to stare in wonder, but the twisty road never allowed the drivers to look at anything but the way ahead.

222

It seemed that this special stage consisted of a little bit of everything. The diverse route consisted of soft soil and field roads covered with dust, river beds and very rough sections around the edges of lakes. Silted up dams, swampy lakes, jumps and dikes… quite a challenge, plus hundreds of kilometres where accurate navigation was key. Not everyone is able to swig this “cocktail” due to exhaustion. But it’s a rally, not holiday! The participants admitted that despite their attempts to concentrate tiredness was starting to become an issue and also the chase for the best position also affects their attention. All this most probably resulted in a serious accident for the Russian crew of Ilya Kuznetsov and Andrey Neshin. Spectators saw their Mitsubishi literally

flying down the road. The track had several deep channels across it and after one of them their car took to the air rolled over several times and hit the ground hard, destroying it and ending their rally, just 12km from the finish. Ilya Kuznetsov was lucky to escape unharmed, but his codriver was not so lucky and needed an urgent medical aid. The restless De Villiers, who retired from the rally during the Astrakhan special stage, could not stay sitting in the bivouac and went on ahead to the finish to greet his team mates. And they, it has to be said, were fighting between themselves for every second in their own personal competition to see who was fastest, but at 11 minutes behind team leader Carlos Sainz, Nasser Al Attiyah wasn’t really hoping to win. Behind the three dominant Volkswagens Matthias Kahle from the German SMG team, lost 2 hours and fell to 5th after his transmission failed.

Unlike some of the car category participants, the leading trucks crews were approaching the finish in a rather relaxed mood. Despite the breakages that slowed him down previously he was happy to hold a strong 3 rd place. Ales Loprais knew that he had no chance of catching the leading KAMAZs so drove under the limit and took the second fastest time. Vladimir Chagin tried hard to make up the time that wasted in the Kalmykian steppes, but more than 23 minutes were still stood between him and Nikolaev. Eduard however told reporters that he still couldn’t believe he was so close to winning and was worried that the victory would be lost by something unforeseen happen on the way to Sochi. There wasn’t much time to wind down in the Maikop bivouac though as everyone await-

ed the arrival of Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister of Russia. He flew in a couple of hours before midnight and was greeted by the Rally Directors Semen Yakubov and Frederik Lequien, the Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko and the Executive Director of KAMAZ JSC Sergey Kogogin. First of all Vladimir Putin went to greet his old friends, the crews of KAMAZ-Master team and then he thanked the Volkswagen team for their participation in the race. Shaking off the cares of the day, Carlos Sainz willingly demonstrated the capabilities of his racing vehicle and explained some of the features of driving a high-speed sports car. Then the honoured guest and the drivers socialized around the table in a spacious tent. After Vladimir Putin’s departure the silence covered the bivouac. Everyone was eager to get at least few hours of sleep before the final stage…

maykop Translated from the Circassian language, Maykop is the «valley of wild apples». The very name of the city shows the unique beauty that surrounds the locals. The city is full of flowers and greenery, and the stunning view of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus opens in the bright sunshine. The city is also surrounded by waterfalls, gorges, caves and of course the fascinating and gorgeous mountains. There are a lot of recreation facilities near the city on the foothills and in the mountains, which are well-known to all the fans of climbing, mountaineering, rafting, paragliding and other extreme sports. And it is not a coincidence that the Silk Way Rally crosses the Main Caucasus Range exactly in this place. Between the seventh and tenth centuries across the territory of modern Adygea with Maykop as the capital, the caravans of the Great Silk Way passed here. The antiquity of this area is proven by numerous archaeological finds. There are dozens of barrows around Maikop and the most significant and bestknown one is the barrow of Oshad. The exploration of this barrow started in late nineteenth century, and many gold and silver objects that were found by the archeologists are now stored in the Hermitage. This area is also legendary for the beauties that were born here: in the middle of the sixteenth century Ivan the Terrible married the daughter of Prince Temryuk – founder of the city on the Taman peninsula, named in his honor. On the date of this Tsar wedding the Circassians joined Russia. It is worth mentioning that many Circassians became a part of Russian history as outstanding military leaders, statesmen and heroes of many wars. The respect shown by Russia to the Circassians is also reflected in the emblem of Maykop that was approved in the middle of the seventeenth century. In the gold shield the mountain blackens, and shield is embraced by a sky-blue, wave-shaped belt. According to the heraldic rules of those days, gold was a symbol of wealth, justice and generosity, and the sky-blue color of the belt is the symbol of beauty, gentleness and might.

253

maikop – sochi At dawn the caravan headed for Black sea. To reach the final special stage, laid out in the mountains along the Shahe river, the sportsmen had to pass through the Main Caucasian Ridge and cover 230 kilometers of liaison section. For ‘dessert’ the organizers had prepared something delicious and also served it beautifully. 16 kilometers located in a stony valley against the mountain backdrop the route was so rough that no one could drive fast. Instead of a road participants were presented with the winding watercourse of the mountain river, which they needed to cross at least twenty times. Getting to the other bank each time drivers had to define if there is a crossing or actually a trap. Large boulders also added to the difficul-

254

ties. The leaderboard of the 30 cars and 13 trucks was set the day before, but still it was necessary to maintain their positions… not with speed though, but by being attentive and cautious. Any navigation error in this deceptively beautiful terrain would cost not just a couple of minutes, but maybe even few hours. In the Caucasus no one was driving recklessly to catch up with the cars in front, aware perhaps that the end was tantalizingly close. Fortunately, the water in the fords plotted in the legend dropped somewhat and many who started this last stage didn’t have the energy to get out and test so relied on their instinct and luck, but the spectators were a really good orienteering point to work out where the crossing was.

255

Eduard Nikolaev: there are just few kilometers to the victory 256

Carlos Sainz though admitted that water and cars are mutually incompatible concepts, but made it through to the end. Despite being aware that Nasser Al Attiyah was faster than him on this stage the experienced driver knew that no one could overhaul his eight and a half minutes lead so remained self-possessed and was happy to get the 4th fastest time. Al Attiyah knew that first place was out of reach so he played in the water, crossing the river at full speed. Shortly before the finish line where a lot of spectators were watching some careless racers performed a show by rushing into the water to make big splashes. One Russian driver from a spectators crows, having a good time was a little over exuberant and hit the water so hard that the car stalled… and then sucked up enough water trying to re-start it that the engine broke… It was such a heart-breaking sight! When the first KAMAZ, driven by Firdaus Kabirov, heaved into sight, the spectators did not suppress their enthusiasm. Pep Vial’s crew has also decided to arrange a celebration for themselves. The driver of De Rooy team finished the last stage second fastest which was a surprise to everyone. This was not the best race in his career, but he didn’t give up and came home 10th overall.

And Eduard Nikolaev decided to avoid any undue risks. After his breakthrough in the Kalmyk steppe the victory was in his pocket, so he was driving as carefully as possible and took only the seventh fastest time. And, as always, he was humble: “I did not expect that I will rise so highly. Looking back to the last year’s Silk Way where I was fourth, I was thinking to get into the top five or ten at best. After we broke away from the others we decided to hold the average pace, go stably, reliably and without errors. We also plan to take part in Dakar with the same crew and vehicle. Dakar is like the Olympic Games for me. I’ll go there for the first time, and the main thing for me is to reach the finish line. It is considered that any who manage to reach the finish are already winners”. So, is it beginner’s luck? And even Ales Loprais, who came in fourth behind the KAMAZ-Master trio, was really happy with his result. “The main thing that the chassis is perfectly in order,” the Czech sportsman laughed and added that “catching up the KAMAZ-Master team is almost unreal”. Vladimir Chagin, who finished the marathon right behind his trainee Eduard Nikolaev, was optimistic. If this special stage would be not 16 but 160-kilometers

long, Chagin would return the leadership to himself, most probably. The Russian Alexey Berkut finished race with a good cheer. In the overall ranking he has taken only the ninth place, but during a short final stage Berkut beat Carlos Sainz, and that fact itself can be considered as a small victory. Alexander Mironenko was in fourth place right behind the Volkswagen trinity, but his vehicle broke right at the last hurdle when he drowned the engine, which meant that Matthias Kahle, who thought that the rally was over when he broke the transmission in the previous day’s stage, took fourth. One more surprise was presented by the Russian Binyamin Dzhepaev driving his UAZ. He has finished this marathon in fifth, having proved that the fortune is kind to stubborn men. The unique female crew of race, the two Elenas of Troy, Golubkina and Pravdina, finished 25th line overall, with four crews behind them. Back in St. Petersburg the Elenas declared that they were not aiming for the prize-winning positions, but they were eager to reach the finish safe and sound… and so they achieved their goal.

You can't see this kind of cars on the streets so take your chance and get pictured with it 257

sochi Sochi is one of the longest cities in the world. It stretches along the eastern Black Sea Coast for as much as 145 kilometers. The salubrious climate and closeness of the sea has always attracted people and according to a hypothesis the Caucasian Black Sea Coast was inhabited 400 thousand years ago. Unfortunately very few samples of architecture evidencing the life of the ancestors remain around Sochi nowadays. Today Sochi is the largest resort in Russia. This all began here a hundred years ago when the first resort, “Caucasian Riviera”, was opened. The boom of the resort business happened in the years of the Soviet system when the development and construction of health centers, the Institute of Balneology, theaters and other recreation and comfort infrastructure began. Sochi is located in the subtropical zone, so the climate here is very humid. It is very hot and has almost no rainfall in summer, but it can snow easily in winter. The early autumn here is considered to be the “velvet season” when the heat is not tiring, and the sea still keeps the summer warmth. The country’s top leadership had summer cottages here, and for many decades, trips to local resorts were the reward for Soviet families. Vacationing in Sochi has always been prestigious. And it has been even more prestigious for several years since Sochi received international recognition as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. The main events of the Olympics will be held in Krasnaya Polyana. The settlement stands on the bank of the mountain river Mzymta where more than 40 years ago the scenes of a girl being kidnapped were shot for the popular Soviet comedy film “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style”. Today Krasnaya Polyana is the most respectable downhill skiing and snowboarding center in Russia. The local downslopes are known for their good snow cover due to the humid air. During the Olympic Games the competitions for skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, freestyle, bobsleigh and other disciplines will take place near Krasnaya Polyana.

269

sochi – krasnaya polyana What does the winning the Silk Way Rally 2010 actually mean? It’s when Carlos Sainz, who always is so serious, smiles, and Eduard Nikolaev apologises to his teammates that he outdone them. It’s when 29 of 43 cars and 13 of 16 trucks started in St. Petersburg and managed to reach Sochi. And what can be sweeter than several minutes on the podium in the spray of champagne, when virtually the whole of Russia, the 2014 kilometers of special stages divided into eight sections, is behind, a moment very symbolic for the country that will host the Olympic Games. The next few days the teams will work over any the mistakes but the main thing on the minds of most is to get some rest… or is it? First it’s time to celebrate! The podium is all bright-blue, the same colours as Volkswagen and KAMAZ-Master. A coincidence? Typically the winners do not make speeches, instead they get on the roof of their tired vehicles and spray themselves and the audience with it... and now we understand why the bottles are so big. Any, who made it onto the podium, no matter in what place, cannot consider himself a loser. If you reached the finish safe and sound, kept your car going you are a hero. And for those that didn’t make it… they didn’t have good luck this time. The organizers had an interesting idea, to reward the winners and all the remaining participants twice. First at the finish line of the last stage in the a village of Nizhny Kirov not far from Sochi, and later in Krasnaya Polyana, where the Silk Way Rally ended, the home of the future Olympic Games. For the ceremonial honoring of the Silk Way heroes the organizers chose the luxury resort “Grand Hotel Polyana” and here, under the stars, surrounded by mountains, in the incredibly fresh air, the champions were rewarded. The prize fund was $300 000, but not only the professionals got a share. All the amateur crews who managed to cross the finish line got $5000. Prizes were also planned for the Russian par-

270

ticipants who threw down the challenge to the worldknown drivers, and also for those who drove vehicles made in Russia. Neither the credits, nor the curtain… The Second Edition of the Silk Way Rally ended with a roar of planes getting off, taking away all those people without whom the race would be incomplete, participants, press, organizers, spectators and many others, to different parts of the world. Only one promise sounds in different languages as a farewell, to meet again within the same crew next year.
