MESSAGE FROM LAU’S PRESIDENT

As we reflect on Fiscal Year 2019, we are overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for the Lebanese American University’s (LAU) successes — so many of which are thanks to the backing of our loyal supporters. Despite the trying times that our country continues to face, our union with you, our donor family, exemplifies that together, everything is possible, the title of this publication. Moreover, together, with your kind support, we are delivering on the promise of academic excellence no matter how tough times may be. After all, it is in these times that education — which instills the values of openness, critical thinking, curiosity, and determination — propels society forward. During the unprecedented weakening of the nation’s economy, our donors proved their commitment to our university and our students. An impressive 1,598 gifts totaling over $18.5 million during Fiscal Year 2019 — which spanned from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019 — is nothing short of extraordinary considering these difficult circumstances. More importantly, these contributions enable us to provide vital support to the university’s most pressing needs, such as student financial aid, enhancing our facilities across our two campuses, and enriching our curriculum and faculties. Demonstrating our community’s profound resilience in the midst of uncertainty, these gifts have allowed us to not only maintain our scholarship and financial aid offerings, but considerably grow it. In fact, 4,496 of the country’s most gifted scholars were recipients of a total of nearly $35.5 million in scholarships and financial aid this year, a 12% increase over last year. We would not have accomplished all this without the generosity of our most devoted benefactors. Among Saria Bechara’s life goals is to return to LAU as a professor to give back to the community that helped her reach her dreams. If her high school and university achievements are any indication, she is well on her way to reaching her target. In fact, she received a 100 percent merit-based scholarship to attend LAU because of her exceptional grades. This aid not only enables her to pursue a high quality education, but it has initiated several other positive changes in her life, according to Bechara. “Had I not been given this scholarship, there’s a good chance I would not have joined LAU, and therefore would have missed all the truly life-changing experiences that the university has offered me,” she explains. Currently in her fourth year of a dual degree in Biology and Psychology, and set to graduate in fall 2020, Bechara is optimistic about the impact she will have in Lebanon thanks to the skills she is gaining from her degree programs. “The culture at LAU is one that promotes having an inquisitive mind and an openness to cross-cultural dialogue. I believe it has impacted me greatly and shaped my approach not only to my fields of study, but also to my life as a whole,” she reflects. Adding to this, Bechara says that she hopes to incorporate the knowledge she has gained at LAU into her practices to improve the quality of life of those around her. Ultimately, she aims to help people recognize and overcome their negative thoughts to enhance their mental health and thus better society as a whole. Highlighting her involvement in the Outreach and Civic Engagement Unit’s Simulation Models as one of her most prized experiences at LAU, Bechara now has her sights set on pursuing master’s and doctorate degrees in Neuroscience or Forensic Psychology. She also plans to undergo training to become a cognitive behavioral therapist. In addition to these feats, Bechara also served as a trainer and Under-Secretary General of Training and Educational Development in Model United Nations and the Director of Training and Educational Development in the Model African Union program, proving that she is already well accustomed to being a successful multitasker. Not only that, but Bechara also credits her experiences at LAU with helping shape her character. Reflecting on these experiences, she says, “They have given me the motivation to look at the world beyond my little bubble with a critical mind and a spirit that can appreciate the richness of diversity,” she says. A member of the Human Rights and Psychology clubs at LAU, Bechara is also an avid volunteer who constantly aims to help those around her, as she did during her time spent volunteering at the inpatient unit at the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon in 2017 and at the Lebanese Autism Society more recently in 2019.

Dating back to 1959 when the institution opened its first alumni chapter in Mount Lebanon, LAU’s alumni volunteers have played an active role in promoting the university’s interests. Whether through networking, fundraising, engagement, or providing advice to fellow alumni or current students, LAU’s active alumni who work closely within their respective alumni chapter groups are extremely valued members of the university community for their persistent advocacy and goodwill role on behalf of their alma mater.

Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Circle Created in 2012, the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Circle (PC) focuses on ways to promote the university that transcend conventional academic channels. Its members and volunteers continuously engage with their community in order to foster a culture of support and philanthropy. PC activities involve multiple events each year ranging from holiday parties for underprivileged communities to creating special awards for exemplary students, and organizing lectures for specific programs such as organ donations, and coordinating fundraising events and campaigns to better the community as a whole. 20

For almost a decade, LAU’s alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, have had the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the institution’s campuses by way of its Seat and Bench Naming Campaign. PHONATHON (2019)

Launched in 2014, the Phonathon is a student-led program that allows the institution’s students to take part in fundraising for their beloved university. The program sees LAU’s students call between 800 and 1,000 of the university’s alumni, regionally and around the world, in order for them to secure pledges. Running for five weeks every spring, this important and interactive program gives both students and alumni a chance to give back, while playing an important role in ensuring the university’s prosperity. STUDENT PROFILE FIDAA AL FAKIH

With hopes of alleviating the refugee crisis in Lebanon and eventually in the region as a whole, LAU graduate student Fidaa Al Fakih is on target to do just that. While pursuing his MA in International Affairs with the help of financial aid, he is gaining hands on experience in the field through his job at the US Embassy in Lebanon’s Public Diplomacy Section. Prior to that, he worked for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as an External Relations Associate. Al Fakih’s undergraduate years at LAU were made possible through the support of a full University Scholarship Program (USP) award, which helped him become the humanitarian he is today, due to the substantial civic engagement activities he participated in as part of the scholarship program. Thanks to a combination of dedication and the help of a series of scholarships, Al Fakih’s list of achievements is seemingly never-ending. After receiving his BS in Business Studies - Management from LAU in 2014, he was chosen to be the co-author of a chapter in a forthcoming Routledge Handbook on Political Parties in the Middle East and North Africa, as part of his participation in the LAU Institute for Social Justice and Conflict Resolution (ISJCR). He joined the institute in 2018, and spends the majority of his efforts on exploring transitional justice relating to Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Most recently, in 2018, Al Fakih traveled to Berlin on an academic excursion to explore the context of refuge and migration in Germany as a part of an LAU graduate delegation. Al Fakih is thankful for the financial aid he received at LAU, and attributes it to helping pave the path towards success for him in his field. “Meeting with EU officials and German academics, students, activists, and representatives of political parties helped my colleagues and I lay a foundation for a comparative analysis between the refugee contexts in the Middle East and Europe,” he explains. As the founder of the LAU Safety Awareness Club, he received several awards for his leadership and service, and was an active participant of the Model UN and Model Arab League programs during his time as an undergraduate. Throughout it all, Al Fakih has shown gratitude and appreciation for those who made his studies at LAU possible. “I owe a lot of who I am today to LAU and its University Scholarship Program,” says Al Fakih. “I wouldn’t have been able to attend such a renowned academic institution and a school of leadership par excellence such as LAU without such a scholarship back then,” he says. Demonstrating his commitment to helping alleviate the region’s disparities and the misconceptions and inequalities faced by marginalized communities and people, Al Fakih is an outstanding representation of the ways in which student financial aid can change the livelihood of not just students, but society as a whole. 29

SENIOR CLASS GIFT (2019)

Since 2012, LAU has run a Plant Your Class Tree campaign through the university’s Senior Class Gift Program, giving graduating seniors an opportunity to leave a lasting mark on their campuses through a small donation. All proceeds of the campaign are directed towards student scholarships, and an olive tree is planted on each of the university’s campuses signifying the class’ generosity. This program allows graduating students to play a dynamic role in beautifying their campuses as well as instilling in them the important value of giving back to their community. LAU ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA DINNER (2018)

Launched in 2012, the LAU Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner is one of the university’s most important events of the year. With the aim of raising funds for scholarships, it brings together LAU's most cherished supporters, friends, alumni, and staff. The event celebrates the university’s generous donor family who makes so many endeavors possible. The inaugural gala raised $7.5 million and subsequent events have also had impressive results. Drawing in more than 700 attendees, the 2018 Gala Dinner was themed “LAU is Here for You,” a reference to the institution’s commitment to providing opportunities for the most deserving of students, regardless of their background. NEW YORK ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA DINNER (2019)

With an aim of broadening LAU’s footprint in North America, and especially in the New York area, the university inaugurated its New York Annual Fundraising Gala Dinner in 2010. Since then, the gala annually brings together many alumni and friends to offer their support and celebrate LAU’s latest achievements. The 2019 gala, held in May at the New York Athletic Club overlooking Central Park, was graced by special honorees, Nayla Moawad and Joseph Audi, as well as Miss Lebanon Maya Reaidy, and tenor Amine Hachem. The packed house of supporters gathered to honor LAU’s legacy as a school founded by a woman, for women, with proceeds from the event and silent auction earmarked towards the Arab Institute for Women (AiW). The following contributors made generous donations towards the 2019 gala dinner celebration with proceeds going towards AiW.

LAU allowed me to study comfortably throughout my cancer battle, and offered me extraordinary support from doctors, teachers, and the administration. Without them, I wouldn't have made it.

“

Diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer during her undergraduate studies at the Lebanese American University (LAU), Tatiyana Haddad never gave up her dream of finishing her degree in Business Studies - Marketing, and managed to graduate with remarkable success in spring 2018. “My experience at LAU played a great role in shaping me into the person I am today,” says the young graduate who radiates positivity, which helped land her a dream job shortly after graduation. That dream job, Content Analyst at Zomato’s Beirut headquarters, is a role that she still holds today, two years on, where she applies the expertise she learned at LAU every single day, according to Haddad. Well on her way to achieving her professional dreams of working for a multinational company, Haddad is making a difference at Zomato, the international restaurant aggregator and food delivery startup. In fact, she has helped the company maintain its booming success over the last few years in Lebanon and around the world. While she is proud of her career, she is always cognizant of her alma mater’s contributions to her achievements, insisting that overcoming her illness and succeeding at her job can be traced back to the values that LAU instilled in her. “LAU taught me how to be an ethical business woman, and everything I need to know to excel in the workplace such as responsibility, ownership, determination, and acceptance,” explains Haddad. Those values, along with her boldness and strong spirit, earned her LAU’s prestigious Sara Khatib Inspiration Award in 2018. Receiving the award — created in the name of an LAU Pharmacy student who battled the same type of cancer — was one of the many highlights of Haddad’s university career. “This award struck me at a very emotional level,” Haddad says. Before receiving the award, which grants the recipient a $1,000 prize, she had also received merit-based financial aid and athletic scholarships for her stellar performance at LAU — both academically and athletically. Despite her busy academic schedule and numerous doctor appointments for cancer treatment, Haddad participated in the work-study program at LAU, receiving financial aid as a result, on top of her existing athletic scholarship, and was a passionate member of the Varsity Futsal Team until she was diagnosed with cancer. Despite her having to withdraw from the team, her athletic scholarship continued providing her financial support until graduation. Haddad says that her experience at LAU, thanks to her scholarships, gave and taught her much more than just academic expertise.

The naming of buildings, benches, seats, rooms, suites, and other tangible and intangible entities are a unique way for our supporters to make an impact and leave a personal impression on the university’s campuses. Whether made monetarily or through financial assets, endowments provide additional income for future investing and expenditures for the university. Around the globe, universities like LAU rely on such endowments to provide permanent, and self-sustaining sources of funding that create dynamic and long-term stability from which the university can prosper. Through such endowments, LAU has the capability to rely on a safety net for any unforeseen issues, as well as to rely on extra resources to help provide constant support to critical areas of the university’s development, such as scholarships and financial aid, campus expansions, and other various operational costs. At LAU, the endowment is divided into three different funds: general, schools, and financial aid. Within the region, students and their families are facing pressing economic challenges — meaning that financial aid is the most pertinent endowment at LAU that requires the most support. Those who donate to these funds make lasting impacts for the future of the university, and provide positive opportunities for a countless number of students each year. During Fiscal Year 2019, LAU’s investment portfolio — which encompasses endowments — preformed similar to the previous year. In fact, in spite of a volatile international market, the university’s portfolio outperformed market indices. Looking ahead, some risks are expected to be well rewarded, and well-structured portfolios to achieve realistic investment goals. To ensure a financially sound future for the university, the Office of Development continues to seek endowment gifts while the investment committee, finance and investment offices, and investment consultants focus their attention on winning strategies while monitoring diligently the endowment portfolio, assessing market conditions, and building a strategic asset allocation mix and robust manager selection processes.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Those who provide gifts to LAU’s various annual scholarship funds help the university keep its promise of providing academic excellence to deserving yet financially challenged students. Gifts towards these funds are distributed throughout the year in which they are donated, and help to maintain the university’s scholarship program so that as many qualified students as possible can benefit from them. During Fiscal Year 2019, LAU provided $23.4 million in need-based financial aid to 3,670 deserving students, much of which came from generous donors who contribute towards annual scholarships. Indeed, annual scholarship gifts play a vital role to LAU and its students, and have immediate impact on those who might otherwise not be able to afford the greatness that is an LAU education. All gifts towards scholarships and endowments are of primary significance to the university — notably so because the number of need-based applicants far exceeds the recipients each year. The university graciously accepts donations of any size towards these important funds, with annual gifts above $1,000 enabling a donor to create a named scholarship fund. 88
