Social Life
Our Higher Education coureses are delivered by lecturers who are highly qualified and experienced within their individual subject specialist areas. All teaching staff are actively involved in research and continued professional development in order to ensure a high quality learning experience.
A programme of social events is planned throughout the year which provide an opportunity for you to meet other students studying across a broad range of curriculum areas. Warrington Collegiate has an active Student Union who organise events and activities aimed at enriching your Higher Education experience. The Student Union is a great way to meet new friends, have fun and really make the most of your time here.
Environment You will study within the Warrington Business School, which has been designed to meetthe needs of higher level learners, providing a professional learning environment and access to HE specific social and study areas. Facilities also include the Learning Resource Centre, where you will have access to a wide range of learning resources, including text books, journals, DVDs and online databases. The IT Suite within the LRC provide access to the internet, email and our virtual learning environment (VLE), as well as providing an opportunity to work on your assignments or study within the quiet study areas provided. Advice is available from our professional learning resource team who will provide IT support as well as guidance in areas such as study skills. We assistive technology suites in the LRC to support students with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Celebrating Success Each year we celebrate the success of our Higher Education students by hosting a Higher Education awards ceremony. The Ceremony is held in the beautiful surroundings of the Warrington Parish Church of St Elphin and provides a very special opportunity to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students.

Financial Support for HNC/HND & Teacher Training courses
Tuition Fees If you plan to study Higher Education at Warrington Collegiate, you will not have to pay for tuition fees upfront. Every new student is entitled to a Tuition Fee Loan, that will cover your fees and this won’t be paid back until you start earning over £21,000 a year. Even then, you will only repay 9% of your earnings over this amount. Both full and part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. For further information about Tuition Fee Loans, visit www.direct.gov.uk/student finance. As a Higher Education student you can apply for a range of financial help with living and study costs, loans (which have to be paid back), and grants which don’t have to be paid back. Maintenance Loan to help with Living Costs Full time students can get up to £5,740 depending on your household income.

Repaying your Loan If you start your course in 2015/16, you will not start repaying your student loan until 2018, even if you leave your course and earn above £21,000 before then. The amount that you will repay will depend on how much you earn and not how much you owe. When you are earning over £21,000 you will pay 9% of your earnings over this amount. Funding Information for Professional courses
Regional Growth Fund The Regional Growth Fund (RGF) is a ÂŁ1.4bn fund to be used across England over a three year period (2011-2014) to support projects that stimulate sustainable economic growth. The second bidding round, completed at the end of July 2011, has seen an oversubscribed interest resulting in combined bid applications to the value of 3.3bn. The successful bids will be distributed through LEPs (Local Enterprise Partnership) and other co-financing organisations within regions across England. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans: Study now, get your dream job, pay later‌. The cost of studying can often be a barrier to learning for adult students but the Government have launched the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans. If you are aged 24+ and studying a Level 3 or above qualification (including Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships) in a further education or a training establishment, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learning Loan. Higher Education Qualifications at Warrington Collegiate A variety of Higher Education qualifications are available to students studying at Warrington Collegiate. Qualifications are available at various levels. The right level for you depends on your existing qualifications and also on your experience. Please refer to the chart below to help you decide which level is right for you.
Levels of Qualifications
Level 3
This level provides an ideal progression route to Higher Education and includes a wide range of qualifications, including the Access to Higher Education qualification.
Level 4
This level is equivalent to the first year of a degree.
Level 5
This level is equivalent to the second year of a degree. Awards offered at this level include Foundation Degrees and the Certificate of Education in Teaching in the Learning & Skills Sector.
Level 6
This level is equivalent to the third and final year of a degree.
Level 7
This level is equivalent to a Masters Degree and is a post graduate qualification.

Access to Higher Education (HE) The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares students for higher level study at university or college. It is designed for individuals who would like to study Higher Education but do not currently have a level 3 qualification. Many Access to HE students go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives that they had never thought possible. To achieve an Access to HE Diploma, you will complete a one year programme of study which includes theoretical input as well as study skills, which will teach you how to approach study and the different techniques that you will need to be a successful student. The course is designed to ensure that you are thoroughly equipped for Higher Education. We currently offer subject-specialist routes within Health, Social Work, Humanities and Social Science.

Access to HE - Health Professions Level 3 (Full-time) This exciting and successful programme has been designed to prepare adults for health-related degrees or other advanced courses at university or college. Our Access to Higher Education courses are approved by the Quality Assurance Agency QAA. If you have not studied for some time, this course will develop your confidence and academic skills. What will I learn? You will study a variety of level 3 modules such as: • Human Physiology • Key Biological Principles • Social Issues in Healthcare • Health Communication • Social Policy • Academic writing and study skills (which will take you through your university application and interviews, showing you how to research and how to give a presentation) Please note, units may be subject to change.

Heather Sharrock Curriculum Manager Higher Education
Heather is the Curriculum Manager for Higher Education provision at Warrington Collegiate and joined the College in January 2013. After working at Mid Cheshire College as the Higher Education Co-ordinator for 12 years, Heather has a strong understanding of the education sector and the important role colleges have in delivering a higher education alternative to university. Before embarking on a career in education, Heather had a successful career in IT, working as Systems Analyst / Programmer for United Utilities and then worked as part of the Millennium 2000 IT project. During her career, Heather has continued to develop academically and has achieved a post graduate certificate in computing in addition to her teacher training qualifications. Heather says, “We have a fantastic higher education department at Warrington Collegiate
with a strong portfolio of HNC and HND qualifications. Our students benefit from small class sizes and greater support from tutors. The course tutors are highly qualified specialists in their subject areas, with a wealth of industry experience, providing students with an increased understanding of the chosen subject.”

Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families HNC/HND (Part-time/Full-time) *subject to numbers As a student on the programme you will be engaged in developing new skills andknowledge which will enhance your role as care professional’s work in the public sector, voluntary organisations and privately funded institutions to support the welfareand care of children, young people and families. This course gives you the chance to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work in your chosen profession. What will I learn? The HNC consists of ten units*: • Continuing Development (Unit 1**) • Communicating, Values and Leadership in an Early Years Environment • Theories of Development: Birth to Three • Early Years Curriculum, Play and Learning • Child Protection • Professional Practice (Unit 9**) • Theories of Development: Three Plus • Understanding Children’s Behavior • Health Promotion for Early Years Practitioners • Working with Families ** Learners who do not hold a license to practice are required to complete 800 hours of work placement. They
should complete 400 hours in relation to Unit 9 Professional Practice and 400 hours in relation to Unit 1 Continuing Development. Learners who already hold a license to practice from the BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Early Years programme (or other recognised qualification) must demonstrate competence by completing 400 hours of work experience in relation to Unit 1 Continuing Development. Learners who are not currently working in sufficient capacity to complete the reflective log for Unit 9 Professional Practice can utilise the 400 hours of work experience from Unit 1 Continuing Development for this purpose.

AND • GCSE English Language or Literature at grade C or above • Must be 18 years or over.
How will I be assessed? As part of the course, you will be assessed through a variety of assessment tasks. These include projects, portfolios, presentations, case studies, reports and research.
What could I study next? The programme provides access for students wishing to proceed onto an Honours Degree. The year of entry is dependent upon the University and course.

Business HNC/D (Part-time/Full-time) Candidates for both programmes are from a wide range of occupations. You will find aspiring managers, experienced managers without qualifications, specialists and technicians. The HNC/HND is especially suited for people who are:- At the beginning of their career and need to broaden their knowledge of business and how it functions; Trying to improve their qualifications and career prospects; Changing the direction of their career and are needing a relevant qualification to help them pursue their ambitions; Wishing to progress onto the final year of a degree. How will I be assessed? Assessment activities have been carefully designed in conjunction with employers in the sector to ensure they meet industry needs and relate to professional practice within a range of settings. The assessments are intended to provide maximum opportunities for you to demonstrate the links between theoretical knowledge and understanding and practice. The assessment process will be facilitated via consideration of work-based practical scenarios in addition to reference to your own work-related practical experience, where appropriate. Assessment is by work based assignments, projects, group work or presentations. The course is continuously assessed during and after each module.

Alec Wall HNC Business For many students, the prospect of returning to education can be a daunting experience but this did not stop Alec Wall when he enrolled on the HNC Business course at Warrington Collegiate. Alec had worked at various retail companies as assistant manager and also enjoyed success in sales roles, but he was keen to keep things fresh and wanted to gain a greater understanding of the key aspects of business.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first came into College, it had been 17 years since I was last in education. The tutors on the course were fantastic and we had a great group of students who supported each other throughout the course. It was a great experience and the wide range of business related modules that we studied have helped me in my current job.�
He enrolled on the HNC business course and studied two evenings a week alongside working full time. As part of the course, Alec has enjoyed the variety of the course content, with modules including Marketing, Events Management, Managing Finance and Communications.

Vocational:
Computing and Systems Development HNC/HND (with Games Modules) (Part-time/Full-time) The Computing and Systems Development HNC/HND is intended to link to local industry as much as possible, both in its content and in the mode of attendance. Its aim is to produce a highly qualified and knowledgeable engineer who can meet the requirements of industry. This is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis. The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector. The course is made up of eight units three mandatory core units and five specialistunits. The core units provide you with the underpinning knowledge required to understand key concepts in the discipline. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in depth, thereby diversifying your professional knowledge. Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 4 The AAT Level 4 Diploma course is the final level of the AAT Technician qualification. As with the other levels, the course aims to provide you with the relevant and practical skills necessary to gain employment in a range of accounting and finance jobs. Gaining an AAT qualification opens up a world of possibilities. Accounting technicians can be found in all sectors of the economy, from industry to public services, from commerce to accountancy practices. Accounting technicians can be found at different levels too – from account clerks to financial controllers. In smaller organisations, accounting technicians may be the only fully trained and qualified accounting staff. What will I learn? You will develop the skills necessary to prepare final accounts for limited companies, together with management accounting skills relating to budgeting and performance evaluation. Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (formally CTLLS) Part-time The level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. This qualification is suitable for an individual who may fulfil the role of tutor as part of a job role. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours teaching. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment.
