Studying for a Higher Education qualification at Warrington Collegiate, rather than at university means that our students are able to benefit from much smaller class sizes, enabling us to provide high levels of tutor support. This is a particular advantage for our many mature students who are returning to education.

With this in mind, employers have been involved in the design of many of our courses, ensuring that our qualifications are of genuine benefit to both you and your employer.

Fabulous Facilities on Campus Warrington Collegiate provides higher level learners with a professional teaching and learning environment. The majority of lectures are delivered within the Business School, which also has a Higher Education lounge and study area for your use. The campus offers a variety of additional features and facilities, including a Learning Resource Centre with a state-of the-art IT suite, a purpose built theatre, great refreshment facilities and much more.

Social Life

Our Higher Education courses are delivered by lecturers who are highly qualified and experienced within their individual subject specialist areas. All teaching staff are actively involved in research and continued professional development in order to ensure a high quality learning experience.

A programme of social events is planned throughout the year which provide an opportunity for you to meet other students studying across a broad range of curriculum areas. Warrington Collegiate has an active Student Union who organise events and activities aimed at enriching your Higher Education experience. The Student Union is a great way to meet new friends, have fun and really make the most of your time here.

Environment You will study within the Warrington Business School, which has been designed to meet the needs of higher level learners, providing a professional learning environment and access to HE specific social and study areas. Facilities also include the Learning Resource Centre, where you will have access to a wide range of learning resources, including text books, journals, DVDs and online databases. The IT Suite within the LRC provides access to the internet, email and our virtual learning environment (VLE), as well as providing an opportunity to work on your assignments or study within the quiet study areas provided. Advice is available from our professional learning resource team who will provide IT support as well as guidance in areas such as study skills. We have assistive technology suites in the LRC to support students with learning difficulties or disabilities.

Celebrating Success Each year we celebrate the success of our Higher Education students by hosting a Higher Education awards ceremony. The Ceremony is held in the beautiful surroundings of the Warrington Parish Church of St Elphin and provides a very special opportunity to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students.

Financial Support for HNC/HND & Teacher Training courses Tuition Fees If you plan to study Higher Education at Warrington Collegiate, you will not have to pay for tuition fees upfront. Every new student is entitled to a Tuition Fee Loan, that will cover your fees and this won’t be paid back until you start earning over £21,000 a year. Even then, you will only repay 9% of your earnings over this amount. Both full and part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan. For further information about Tuition Fee Loans, visit: www.gov.uk/student-finance As a full time Higher Education student you can apply for a maintenance loan to help with living and study costs.

Maintenance Loan

•Up to £8,200 per year is available for students who live away from home and study at university/college outside London.

•Up to £6,904 per year is available for students who live with their parents.

•All students regardless of their level of household income can receive a basic maintenance loan

Additional Support

Disabled Students Allowances (DSA)

DSAs are grants to help meet extra course costs which students can face as a result of a disability.

Parents Learning Allowance/Childcare Grant:

Full time students with children may qualify for extra financial help in addition to the standard student finance package.

Depending on your circumstances you may be entitled to:

•Childcare Grant to help with child care costs.

•Parent Learning Allowance to help towards learning costs.

Adult Dependents Grant

Provides extra help to students with an adult who depends on you financially.

Repaying a loan

Repaying your Loan The amount that you will repay will depend on how much you earn and not how much you owe. When you are earning over £21,000 you will pay 9% of your earnings over this amount. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans: Study now, get your dream job, pay later‌. The cost of studying can often be a barrier to learning for adult students but the Government have launched the 24+ Advanced Learning Loans. If you are aged 24+ and studying a Level 3 or above qualification (including Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships) in a further education or a training establishment, you may be entitled to an Advanced Learning Loan. Please call into Learner Services for further information about 24+ Advanced Learning Loans or support when applying for a loan.

Higher Education Qualifications at Warrington Collegiate A variety of Higher Education qualifications are available to students studying at Warrington Collegiate. Qualifications are available at various levels. The right level for you depends on your existing qualifications and also on your experience. Please refer to the chart below to help you decide which level is right for you.

Levels of Qualifications

Level 3

This level provides an ideal progression route to Higher Education and includes a wide range of qualifications, including the Access to Higher Education qualification.

Level 4

This level is equivalent to the first year of a degree.

Level 5

This level is equivalent to the second year of a degree. Awards offered at this level include HNDs and the Diploma in Education and Training.

Level 6 Level 7

This level is equivalent to the third and final year of a degree. This level is equivalent to a Masters Degree and is a post graduate qualification.

Access to Higher Education (HE) The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a qualification which prepares students for higher level study at university or college. It is designed for individuals who would like to study Higher Education but do not currently have a level 3 qualification. Many Access to HE students go on to succeed at university and beyond, with a large number pursuing new careers and seeing changes in their lives that they had never thought possible. To achieve an Access to HE Diploma, you will complete a one year programme of study which includes theoretical input as well as study skills, which will teach you how to approach study and the different techniques that you will need to be a successful student. The course is designed to ensure that you are thoroughly equipped for Higher Education. We currently offer subject-specialist routes within Health, Social Work, Humanities and Social Science.

Pre-Access to Higher Education Level 2 (Full-time) What will I learn? You will study a variety of level 2 modules such as: • Human Physiology • Social Issues in Healthcare • IT Skills • Criminology • Psychology • Please note, units may be subject to change.

What are the entry requirements? Most universities ask for GCSE in English Language and/or GCSE Maths at C or above, in addition to an Access Diploma, in order to be eligible to apply for certain degrees. Certain courses at university will also ask for a GCSE in a Science. You are therefore advised to research your intended degree and the universities you intend to apply to, in order to confirm their specific entry requirements. As this is a short course you will be unable to study a GCSE

alongside the Diploma however you can enrol for a GCSE alongside the Access course onto which you will progress. For this reason, you will be required to have a minimum of GCSE English Language or Maths at C or above. Adults who do not have the pre-requisite entry qualifications are welcome to apply. The admissions tutor will use your initial assessment results to ascertain whether this is the right course for you.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed during the course as each unit is taught and completed. A variety of methods will be used such as essays, presentations and projects.

Health Professions Level 3 (Full-time) This exciting and successful programme has been designed to prepare adults for health-related degrees or other advanced courses at university or college. Our Access to Higher Education courses are approved by the Quality Assurance Agency QAA. If you have not studied for some time, this course will develop your confidence and academic skills. What will I learn? You will study a variety of level 3 modules such as: • Human Physiology • Social Issues in Healthcare • Health Communication • Psychology or Midwifery • Academic Writing and Study kills (which will take you through your university application and interviews, showing you how to research and how to give a presentation) Please note, units may be subject to change.

What are the entry requirements? Most universities ask for GCSE in English Language and/or GCSE Maths at C or above, in addition to the Access Diploma, in order to be eligible to apply for certain degrees. Many universities are also looking for a GCSE in a science. Our Access to Higher Education courses are approved by the Quality Assurance Agency QAA. If you have not studied for some time, this course will develop your confidence and academic skills. What will I learn? You will study a variety of Level 3 modules such as English, Psychology, Education, Criminology, Academic writing and study skills, which will take you through your university application and interviews and show you how to research and how to give a presentation.

Heather Sharrock Head of Faculty

Higher Education

Heather is the Head of Faculty for Higher Education provision at Warrington Collegiate and joined the College in January 2013. After working at Mid Cheshire College as the Higher Education Co-ordinator for 12 years, Heather has a strong understanding of the education sector and the important role colleges have in delivering a higher education alternative to university. Before embarking on a career in education, Heather had a successful career in IT, working as Systems Analyst / Programmer for United Utilities and then worked as part of the Millennium 2000 IT project. During her career, Heather has continued to

develop academically and has achieved a post graduate certificate in computing in addition to her teacher training qualifications. Heather says, “We have a fantastic higher education department at Warrington Collegiate with a strong portfolio of HNC and HND qualifications. Our students benefit from small class sizes and greater support from tutors. The course tutors are highly qualified specialists in their subject areas, with a wealth of industry experience, providing students with an increased understanding of the chosen subject.”

Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families HNC/HND (Part-time/Full-time) *subject to numbers As a student on the programme you will be engaged in developing new skills and knowledge which will enhance your role as care professionals work in the public sector, voluntary organisations and privately funded institutions to support the welfare and care of children, young people and families. This course gives you the chance to gain a qualification whilst continuing to work in your chosen profession. What will I learn? The HNC consists of ten units*: • •

Continuing Development (Unit 1**) Communicating, Values and Leadership in an Early Years Environment Theories of Development: Birth to Three Early Years Curriculum, Play and Learning Child Protection Professional Practice (Unit 9**) Theories of Development: Three Plus Understanding Children’s Behaviour Health Promotion for Early Years Practitioners Working with Families

** Learners who do not hold a license to practice are required to complete 800 hours of work placement. They should complete 400 hours in relation to Unit 9 Professional Practice and 400 hours in relation to Unit 1 Continuing Development. Learners who already hold a license to practice from the BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Early Years programme (or other recognised qualification) must demonstrate competence by completing 400 hours of work experience in relation to Unit 1 Continuing Development. Learners who are not currently working in sufficient capacity to complete the reflective log for Unit 9 Professional Practice can utilise the 400 hours of work experience from Unit 1 Continuing Development for this purpose.

You will typically have one of the following; • A BTEC Level 3 or other Level 3 qualification in a related subject (160 UCAS points). • A minimum of 2 A Levels (A2) with one in a related subject at grade C or above (160 UCAS points). • Access to HE with relevant options. • Extensive relevant work experience – mature learners who have extensive work experience and / or professional qualifications in a related industry are welcome to apply. AND • GCSE English Language or Literature at grade C or above • Must be 18 years or over.

How will I be assessed? As part of the course, you will be assessed through a variety of assessment tasks. These include projects, portfolios, presentations, case studies, reports and research.

Business HNC/D (Part-time/Full-time) Candidates for both programmes are from a wide range of occupations. This course is ideal for aspiring managers, experienced managers without qualifications, specialists and technicians. The HNC/HND is especially suited for people who are:At the beginning of their career and need to broaden their knowledge of business and how it functions; Trying to improve their qualifications and career prospects; Changing the direction of their career and are needing a relevant qualification to help them pursue their ambitions; Wishing to progress onto the final year of a degree. What will I learn? The HNC consists of eight units: • Personal & Professional Development • Organisations & Behaviour • Events Management • Marketing Principles • Business Environment • Research Project • Managing Finance • Managing Communications. How will I be assessed? Assessment activities have been carefully designed in conjunction with employers in the sector to ensure they meet industry needs and relate to professional practice within a range of settings. The assessments are intended to provide maximum opportunities for you to demonstrate the links between theoretical knowledge and understanding and practice. The assessment process will be facilitated via consideration of work-based practical scenarios in addition to reference to your own work-related practical experience, where appropriate. Assessment is by work based assignments, projects, group work or presentations. The course is continuously assessed during and after each module.

What could I study next? Students who complete the HNC programme can proceed onto the HND course offered at Warrington Collegiate. There is also the possibility of advancing onto the first or second year of a university degree programme (the entry year will depend upon the particular university). Students have previously progressed onto their final year at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Alec Wall HNC Business For many students, the prospect of returning to education can be a daunting experience but this did not stop Alec Wall when he enrolled on the HNC Business course at Warrington Collegiate. Alec had worked at various retail companies as assistant manager and also enjoyed success in sales roles, but he was keen to keep things fresh and wanted to gain a greater understanding of the key aspects of business. He enrolled on the HNC business course and studied two evenings a week alongside working full time.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first came into College, it had been 17 years since I was last in education. The tutors on the course were fantastic and we had a great group of students who supported each other throughout the course. It was a great experience and the wide range of business related modules that we studied have helped me in my current job.�

Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 4 The AAT Level 4 Diploma course is the final level of the AAT Technician qualification. As with the other levels, the course aims to provide you with the relevant and practical skills necessary to gain employment in a range of accounting and finance jobs. Gaining an AAT qualification opens up a world of possibilities. Accounting technicians can be found in all sectors of the economy, from industry to public services, from commerce to accountancy practices. Accounting technicians can be found at different levels too – from account clerks to financial controllers. In smaller organisations, accounting technicians may be the only fully trained and qualified accounting staff.

What will I learn? You will develop the skills necessary to prepare final accounts for limited companies, together with management accounting skills relating to budgeting and performance evaluation. There are four compulsory units to the Level 4 Diploma, these are: Financial Statements, Budgeting, Financial Performance, and Internal Control and Accounting Systems, and two out of five optional units, which are: Credit Management and Control, Cash Management, Personal Tax, Business Tax, External Auditing.

What are the entry requirements? You should be a practising senior manager/leader or have responsibility for Leadership & Management as part of your day to day role or you will have successfully completed the ILM Level 5 in Leadership & Management at Warrington. Applicants who are new to this course at this college must take a numeracy and literacy level 2 initial assessment test. You will attend an interview and submit a short piece of work to ensure that this is the right course for you.

How will I be assessed? There is a written report and/or combination of evidence including Literature review, CPD Plan, Leadership analysis and feedback, presentation, digital recorded interviews that demonstrates your understanding and research of the context in which effective Leadership & Management operates.

Award in Education and Training (formally PTLLS) Level 3 (Part-time) The Level 3 award is a short introductory course which prepares new entrants for teaching in the lifelong learning sector. If teaching, tutoring or training is part of your remit, you may be required to progress to a further qualification appropriate to your role. What will I learn? The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector such as:• The roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training • Inclusive teaching and learning approaches • Assessment of learners • Facilitating learning and development for individuals • Facilitating learning and development in groups • Understanding principles and practices of assessment

No access to teaching hours are required for the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through a range of practical and theoretical assignments. A micro teach assessment is also required.

What could I study next? Progression to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 5 Certificate in Education and Training (subject to meeting additional entry criteria)

Certificate in Education and Training (formally CTLLS) Level 4 (Part-time) The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. This qualification is suitable for an individual who may fulfil the role of tutor as part of a job role. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours teaching. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment.

What will I learn? Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

Diploma in Education and Training Level 5 (Part-time) The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as a teacher/trainer in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 100 hours of teaching. This qualification is suitable for an individual who wishes teaching to be their full job role. What will I learn? Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, candidates will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

What could I study next? On completion of this qualification progression routes could include Foundation degrees and BA honours degrees in subjects related to Education.
