Vocational Qualifications Vocational qualifications offer a more practical, career related approach to learning and are an excellent choice for all students, whether you are choosing to progress into employment or higher education. They can be studied at Levels 1 – 3. Vocational qualifications offer a mix of theory and practice, including an element of work experience and are assessed through practical work, coursework and/or assignments.
GCSEs If you haven’t achieved grade A*-C at GCSE in maths and English you will be able to study for these qualifications alongside your main vocational qualification as part of your programme of study.
21
Apprenticeships Earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain job-specific skills Apprenticeships are a great way to kick start your career whist studying at the same time. You will gain qualifications as well as vital work experience and a salary, giving you a head start in your chosen career. During your time as an apprentice you will usually undertake training in the workplace setting for four days per week and be paid to study at college to gain your qualification for up to one day per week.
Why should I choose an apprenticeship? A real wage Instead of building around £13,000 university debt per year, apprentices can earn between £100 and £200 a week in their first year.
22
A real job Work in a job placement for at least 30 hours per week and get yourself on the career ladder. You will also benefit from support from Warrington Collegiate in your first job. One of our assessors will mentor you, visiting your workplace each month to discuss your progress and achievement. A real qualification Employers feel that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications. A real future You will gain nationally recognised qualifications that will be welcomed by employers. That means you can progress and get a degree or change jobs and take your skills and qualifications with you.
We currently offer Apprenticeships across a wide range of levels and sectors including: • • • • • • • • • •
Accountancy Beauty Therapy Business Administration Bricklaying Carpentry & Joinery Childcare Customer Service Electrical Installation Hairdressing Hospitality & Catering
• IT • Logistics Operations • Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Fitting • Nail Services • Passenger Transport • Plumbing and Heating • Social Media • Warehousing
What qualities and skills do I need? Employers look for the following qualities and skills in a potential apprentice: • A keenness to work – a track record of good attendance and punctuality at school or college is a must. • Good communication skills – making good eye contact, listening skills and non verbal body language, demonstrating your interest in working for an employer. • Good maths and English – this does not necessarily mean GCSEs A*-C, however you must have a good level of literacy and numeracy, a willingness to study for qualifications in maths and English depending on your existing qualifications and the level of apprenticeship you are studying.
What do I need to do? There are two ways to apply for an apprenticeship at Warrington Collegiate: • Apply for one of our current vacancies advertised on the ‘Find an apprenticeship’ website : www.apprenticeships.gov.uk • Send in your CV and request an Initial Screening Interview so that we can assess your skills and aptitude for an apprenticeship. If you think that you have already found an employer to take you on as an apprentice, please contact us, we will carry out an Initial Screening Interview to assess your suitability. We will also arrange for one of our Business Team to contact your potential employer to make sure your work place is a safe and suitable environment.
