Welcome to Warrington Collegiate, A message from the Student Involvement Officer, Michael Ignatius My role in the college is to provide students with opportunities to fulfil their potential in extra-curricular activities. Students are offered volunteering and enrichment programmes that will be of real benefit when looking at jobs and universities. The students here are very eager and they relish opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills. Warrington Collegiate offers a lot of activities for students to develop, both in and out of class. The enthusiasm of staff and students about upcoming events is great. Students can get involved in fundraising activities such as the Poppy Appeal and Children in Need, take part in exciting trips, can commence their Duke of Edinburgh Award, and also get involved in a variety of sports activities. I am given a lot of flexibility to meet the students’ needs so that they get the best possible college experience. Warrington Collegiate has a great reputation with a lot of local charities and volunteer organisations, which I work closely with. Staff are pro-active and will actively encourage learners to take part in new challenges. We look forward to seeing you at Warrington Collegiate.

Vocational Education: Qualifications that Work We all know that Warrington is a fantastic place to live, work and study, but recent research compiled by the Think Tank, Centre for Cities, has revealed that Warrington is in fact one of the UK’s greatest economic success stories of the 20th Century. The long-term investment in the town’s transport links, homes and education infrastructure has encouraged more and more people to move to Warrington from neighbouring cities and, as the town has expanded, it has become even more attractive as a business location. Warrington now punches well above its weight in terms of the number of national companies headquartered in the town and in some sectors of the economy is fast becoming a UK centre of excellence. As a result, there is increasing demand for employees with the practical skills needed in these sectors. Employers are increasingly aware that students who have chosen a vocational route are often better equipped for work than those who have gone to University and more and more companies are looking to recruit directly from College or to take on Apprentices. At Warrington Collegiate we recognise the important role we play in supporting the growth of the local economy by producing highly skilled people, ready for the world of work. As a vocational college, all our courses have a specific focus on the practical skills needed by local employers that will allow you, the learner, to have the best chance of starting a productive and rewarding career in your chosen industry. We work hard to ensure our courses reflect the needs of local employers so that you are very well prepared for work after college. We engage with many local employers to ensure our courses meet their needs and provide you with the opportunity to gain real work experience during your studies. So what jobs are available in Warrington? Warrington has a diverse economy and there will always be jobs available for motivated and skilled people in most types of occupations, but the sectors in which Warrington has developed a particular strength and are the fastest growing include; Telecommunications & IT, Energy & Utilities, Service Industries, Construction, Engineering and Distribution & Logistics. Other sectors with significant employment opportunities include; the Healthcare sector with the NHS and a number of private care providers with major sites in Warrington. Another area of growth is the Hospitality & Catering sector, as Warrington continues to have a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, bars and sports facilities, which remains an important sector in Warrington supported by the recent opening of the Orford Jubilee Park. It is clear, that there are so many positive opportunities for students enrolling at Warrington Collegiate. You will gain qualifications that work, enabiling you to find employment in your chosen industry or progress onto Higher Education to enhance your knowledge and skills even further.

An apprenticeship is a great alternative to university. It covers a variety of subjects and has given me a really good start in Accountancy. I like the way the apprenticeship is structured and relates to what I am doing at work. The subjects you learn while you are at college can be used in work the next day. I would like to complete the AAT Level 3 and 4 qualification and then complete the chartered Accountancy qualification. I have always been very academic and I like studying.

STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] STEM subjects are integral to the UK’s success: the UK is the world’s sixth largest manufacturer, engineering turnover is around £800 billion per year, and whilst the UK makes up only one percent of the world’s population, we produce ten percent of the world’s top scientific research. Despite this, it is remarkable to note that even though STEM graduates have the potential to earn amongst the highest salaries of all new recruits, employers are finding it difficult to recruit STEM skilled staff. Alongside our need for a skilled STEM workforce, it is crucial that all young people, regardless of their future career pathway, have the STEM knowledge and skills they need to be an informed citizen in an increasingly scientific and technological society.

STEM in the North West The North West has an economy worth more than £119bn, making it the UK’s largest regional economy. The North West is also home to the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, and is Europe’s second largest media hub. The region currently has an annual Research & Development investment of over £2.2bn. Many of the region’s most high-profile employers are STEM-related and there are increasing numbers of smaller STEM-related employers in new sectors including nuclear decommissioning and nano-materials.
