Why Study Accounting? This course equips you with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to assess the financial performance of business organisations. In the first year you will take units introducing you to financial and management accounting and in the second year a more in depth study of company accounts and management accounting is undertaken. If you are interested in a career in accountancy, business or management, then this is an excellent qualification. It is often studied together with business studies, but can be taken with any combination of arts or science ~ A Levels.

Entry Requirements We would expect students to have at least a grade 5 in maths in addition to the general entry requirements.

Why Study Art & Design? The fine art course uses a range of materials including painting, print, sculpture, mixed media and digital imagery. The course encourages experimental art. Observational drawing is a major component and underpins all fine art practice. You will undertake a lot of practical studio work and you will study drawing, painting, mixed media and printmaking.

Entry Requirements We would expect students normally to have a GCSE grade 5 in an art and design subject or a BTEC equivalent, in addition to the general requirements. However, of equal importance is a genuine interest and passion for art combined with an enthusiastic approach.

Why Study Biology? The A Level course builds on and develops the concepts and skills from the GCSE science qualification and its content is very relevant for an understanding of key scientific issues and debates of the 21st Century. You will study topics like biological molecules, cells, organisms, genetics, energy transfer, evolution, ecosystems and gene technology.

Entry Requirements We would expect students to have achieved at least a grade 5 in biology or grade 5 in combined science plus a grade 5 qualification in either physics or chemistry. You must have also achieved a grade 5 or above in maths.

Why Study Business?

Business examines the key issues businesses face in the real world, with students learning how to apply business theories and ideas to different contexts. Topics include: the reasons businesses exist, the role of shareholders, global and external environments, marketing, opportunities for entrepreneurs and key management principles. These are taught through the use of case studies, investigations and practical work.

Entry Requirements As well as meeting the general requirements for A Level study, we would expect you to have a grade 5 in maths. You do not need to have studied business studies at GCSE level.

Why Study Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of how the elements and their compounds behave and how chemical principles underpin our understanding of the physical and biological environment. The A Level course builds upon the GCSE content you will have studied and includes topics like atomic structure, chemical bonding and the periodic table, organic chemistry, transition metals, energy changes and rates of reaction. The course will include practical work which will help in your wider understanding.

Entry Requirements As well as meeting the general requirements for A Level study, you will need a grade 5 in chemistry or combined science and grade 5 in maths.

Why Study Computer Science? The course will focus on the basic principles of how a computer operates and will look at topics including hardware, networking, algorithms, computational mathematics and computer programming. You will acquire knowledge and understanding of software and system development.

Entry Requirements As well as meeting the general requirements for A Level study, you will need a minimum grade 5 in GCSE maths. You do not need to have studied computer science at GCSE.

Why Study English Literature?

The course is very academic and includes understanding of a range of literary texts including poetry, prose and drama. You should have a passion for reading and be prepared to undertake significant independent reading. You will analyse texts and literary traditions and be prepared to apply your knowledge of literary analysis and critical theories to the texts studied.

Entry Requirements As well as meeting our general requirements for A Level study, you will need grade 5s in both GCSE English literature and English language.

Why Study Government & Politics? Studying government and politics will give you a knowledge and understanding of how major political systems in the world operate. You will study how modern democracies work and how they impact on current domestic and world affairs. You will develop your own personal skills in research, constructing arguments and writing fluently and concisely.

Entry Requirements There are no specific subject requirements other than the general requirements for A Level study, with English being of particular importance. You need to be prepared to stay up to date with current affairs and to discuss, debate and write extensively about relevant issues.

Why Study Graphic Design? Studying graphic design will ensure you explore a range of disciplines including advertising, packaging, branding, editorial design, animation and web design. The course is project based and allows you to produce work for specific briefs. You will produce computer generated work, use print making, stencilling and other approaches. The course is usually assessed with 60% coursework and 40% externally set assignment.

Entry Requirements We would expect a grade 5 or above in GCSE art or a design based subject, or its BTEC equivalent.

Why Study History? History is the study of human behaviour and offers perspectives on the past, present and future. It also helps develop a range of specialist and transferable skills, in particular analysis and interpretation and the ability to evaluate evidence and reach a clear judgement. As part of your course, you will engage in an independent historical investigation which will help you succeed in any subject at university; the ability to manage your time and work independently are important transferable skills.

Entry Requirements

Ideally we would expect you to have a grade 5 at GCSE in history, however, you do not have to have studied history at GCSE in order to take it as A Level as long as you have met the general entry requirements. You should be willing to engage in wider reading and be confident both verbally and orally in expressing your opinion.

Why Study Maths? Maths is a diverse and fascinating subject which combines pure maths topics such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry with applied maths modules like mechanics and statistics. Usually students studying physics or thinking of engineering as a career will choose this option, but maths can be selected with many combinations including chemistry, biology, computer science and accounting.

Entry Requirements We would expect candidates who wish to study maths at A Level to have achieved a grade 6 in the subject at GCSE, as well as meeting general requirements.

Why Study Media Studies? In this A Level, you will be analysing a wide range of media products. You will gain an understanding of the impact of visual, audio and written elements and how recent technical innovations are impacting. You will also study how different groups are portrayed in the media. The subject also examines the world of popular music. You will undertake a research project on a media topic of your choice which will allow you to develop a range of skills.

Entry Requirements We would expect students to have a grade 5 in English language and/or English literature as well as meeting our general requirements for A Level study. We do not expect you to have studied media studies at GCSE, but it would be an advantage.

Why Study Physics? Physics is the study of how the world around us works –it is the most basic and fundamental science from the constituents of the atomic nucleus to the large scale structure of the universe. Its scope is vast. Discoveries in physics have been at the heart of most advances in technology. It is a dynamic, fascinating and very challenging subject, but understanding the principles of physics rewards students with a deep understanding of the universe.

Entry Requirements We would expect you to have at least a grade 6 in physics (or combined science) and maths as well as meeting our general requirements for A Level study.

Why Study Psychology? Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour and attempts to explain human behaviour through different approaches. It tries to answer such questions as: How does human memory work and can it be improved? Do our early experiences in childhood affect our later development? Are mental disorders like depression genetic or learned? What factors influence our choice of partners?

Entry Requirements As psychology is a science based subject, we would expect you to have a least a grade 5 in either single sciences or combined science as well as a grade 5 in English and maths. You are not required to have any prior knowledge of psychology, but will need to be inquisitive, enquiring and interested in this subject.

Why Study Sociology? Sociology is the study of human society, human achievement and the behaviour of people within society. Sociologists attempt to understand and explain how society works and what makes us act in particular ways. You will be expected to discuss and form opinions on sensitive subjects like race, sexuality, crime, religion gender and politics and how these may influence our lives. Topics you will study may include crime and deviance, education, beliefs in society, the family and criminology.

Entry Requirements You do not have to have studied sociology at GCSE to take it at A Level, but you will need to meet our general requirements for A Level study.
