Vocational Study
or e to bto... not
...different ways to study
Core Units
1 “What is right for me?” That depends on how you prefer to learn... A Levels, Vocational Qualifications and Apprenticeships are simply different ways of learning. Vocational Qualifications, A Levels and Apprenticeships share the same goals, the ultimate one being to enable you to secure your dream job!
What is the difference between Vocational Qualifications and A Levels? A Levels mainly involve two years of study geared towards a few big tests at the end, whereas Vocational Qualifications are continually assessed via coursework, practical projects and end tests. 10
What level of study does Warrington Collegiate provide for students aged 16–18 years? We provide both BTEC and Apprenticeship qualifications from Entry Level to Level 3. Foundation Level Qualifications
These qualifications are available at Entry Level and Level 1, and are designed to enable you to gain a basic level of knowledge and skills. Intermediate Level Qualifications These qualifications are Level 2 and are equivalent to GCSEs. They provide an ideal progression route onto Advanced Level Qualifications.
Advanced Level Qualifications
These Level 3 qualifications are equivalent to A Levels and provide an ideal progression route into employment or onto Higher Education. See page 18 for Apprenticeships.
The Employability Factor...
“BTEC courses give you real hands-on experience. It’s what I call ‘learning by doing’ and gives you the skills that today’s employers are looking for.” Peter Jones, CBE Entrepreneur
Can I apply for a place at University with a Level 3 Vocational Qualification? Yes! We get asked this question a lot. A qualification at Level 3 is the equivalent of studying A Levels and provides access to a degree programme. Did you know that BTEC National Extended Diploma achieved at Triple Distinction grade attracts 360 UCAS points – equivalent to three A Levels at grade A?
Core Units provide a broad foundation and understanding of the sector.
Optional Units
2
Assignment Units
3
Optional Units enable students to focus on a particular interest.
Assignment Units are written or activity-based.
Vocational Qualifications are divided into four types of units, which students complete to gain their qualification. In addition to the three units above, students will also complete an end-of-study test.
Aim High...
Entry requirements will be different from one University to another. Our onsite Careers Adviser, based in Learner Services, will be able to help you understand the grades you need to progress onto a Higher Education course.

Currently working in Warrington Collegiate’s Finance Department, Dan is gaining experience in invoicing, chasing payments, and working on management accounts and general banking tasks. An Apprenticeship was the best route for me, as I already knew that I wanted to be an accountant. I feel that I have an advantage over my peers because of my experience so far. I’m learning each day, and the AAT Qualification I will achieve through this Apprenticeship, will help me to become an accountant.
