Mrs Atha’s - Leeds City Centre Central Rd • Leeds • LS1 6DE Mrs Atha’s is a bespoke cafe in the heart of Leeds city centre, the cafe it self attracts a variety of people from different backgrounds it is considered a current trendy cafe for design enthusiasts. The sign itself appears handpainted and is a variation of 3 typefaces.

Bundobust – Leeds City Centre 6 Mill Hill • Leeds • LS1 5DQ Bundobust is a small run Indian street food resturaunt which also sells delicious craft beers. The sign is brightly coloured and well represented of Indian type culture, the sign has been hand painted. Bundobust officially opened in summer 2014 so is fairly new to Leeds City Centre.

Primo’s Castleford Xscape (Coca Cola) Colorado Way • Castleford (Leeds/Wakefield) • WF10 4TA Primo’s is a luxury hotdog eatery. There are several Primo’s dotted around the Leeds area. Inside you will find a collection of bespoke and vintage pieces such as napkin/sauce holders aswell as the best hot dog you ever ate!

Beds & Chairs – Castleford Situated behind Shell Petrol Station. Lock Lane • Castleford • WF10 2JU Close to the Castleford tigers rugby League stadium there is a number of examples of hand painted typography dotted around the centre of castleford. Castleford is well known for its industrial past some of the typography left behind shows a direct link to its historic culture.

The Electric Press– Leeds City Centre 14 Great George St • Leeds • LS1 3DW The electric press tower is situated close to the millenium centre in the heart of Leeds, the building was built around the 1890’s and was used for Chorley and Pickersgill printing works. The typography is fairly new compared to the building and believed to of found its home when the building became the house to resturaunts and bars.

Charles Walker & Co LTD Mill Furnishers, Located above prospect house– Leeds City Centre 32 Sovereign St • Leeds • LS1 4BJ Charles Walker & Co Limited is situated close by to the Leeds Train Station approximatley 10 minute walk. Although this building is not used for the purpose it was in 1887 it is now used as offices ‘Prospect House’ the typography it is directly above the main sign. It is believed the type is made with stone and tiles almost like a mosaic.

The Window of Oppertunity - The Nation of Shopkeepers – Leeds City Centre 29 Cookridge Street • Leeds • LS2 3AG Nation Of Shopkeepers is a Bar close to Vernon Street Leeds College of Art also opposite to the Electric press building, This type appears to be applied by gold leaf an example of a typographer who does similar gold leaf type would be Dave Smith he uses gold leaf to apply to shop windows and sigsns etc.

The Hepworth Gallery Wakefield City Centre Gallery Walk •Wakefield • WF1 5AW The Hepworth Wakefield, (Named after the sculptor Barbara Hepworth) the building itself is quirky and different. All the type inside and out of the art gallery is consistant throughout. The hepworth sign is engraved onto industrial metal signs. From observations the typeface is a variation of Helvetica, Futura, and Railway.

Foyle and Kirk– Leeds Hyde Park Road • Leeds • LS6 1AF The Foyle & Kirk hand painted sign located next door to the Hyde park is bold and clear just like you would expect an advertisement at first this can appear to be wethered and old but it is believe to be a fairly recent addition to Hyde Park, the typeface used most commonly appears to be a variation of Helvetica.

The Corn Exchange, John Smith’s Tadcaster Brewery – Leeds City Centre Call Lane • Leeds • LS1 7BR This sign of John Smiths is a lasting rememberance of the history of the city, Many brewery’s were found in Leeds Such as the former Tetley Brewery now the Tetley art gallery. The sign is located above a fire exit in the Leeds Corn exchange the type is painted and placed behind glass it is unsure if this was the original place of the sign.W

The Duck and Drake – Leeds City Centre 43 Kirkgate • Leeds • LS2 7DR The Duck and Drake Pub is hidden away just on the edges of Leeds, if you were not local to the area it is unlikely you would stumble upon it due to its location there are many hidden away little pubs and bars in the centre in nooks and crannys you would not consider to look for.

The Arabian Horse Pub – Aberford, Leeds Main Street• Aberford • LS25 3AA Aberford is a beautiful village around 30 minutes away from the city of Leeds, its idelliac setting has a direct approach on its historic architecture! even the local pub has made its typography fit in with its hand painted flourishes.

Hyde Park Picture House – Leeds 73 Brudenell Road • Leeds • LS6 1JD In the last place you would expect a beautiful quaint picture house in Leeds, Hyde Park is home to a piece of History. The building is completely untouched by time and has an array of beautiful structure alongside type and signage. The building is still used to this day for film screenings showing mostly artistic movies.The typeface is believed to be Gill Sans.

‘Sons’ Garforth – Main Street • Garforth • LS25 1DS Garforth is a large village also on the outskirts of Leeds and is accessible via train and bus although its history is not visiable Garforth used to be a mining village and alot of the local pubs are named after its past. On the main street close to the train station a faded advertisement from Garforths past is just visable, on bright daylight days you are able to see the type slightly clearer than normal.

Dysons – Leeds City Centre 24-26 Briggate • Leeds • LS1 6EP Directly above AM Kitchen and Bar (Indian) is the hystoric remains of Time Ball/John Dyson & Sons building, the building is grade ii listed and been around for 150 years! The upkeep of the building is incredible considering the development of Leeds over time Originally the building was owned by Jeweller which explains the decadant fronting of the shop.

The Prince of Wales – Leeds City Centre Mill Hill • Leeds • LS1 5DQ The Prince of Wales Pub, located near the former ‘Cockpit’ and also close by the the Arches and of course Leeds City Centre. The pub’s very gritty advertisement is painted onto chalk board.


Q

Qubana– Wakefield CIty Centre 25-27 Northgate • Wakefield • WF1 3BJ Qubana home of all things Cuban serving delicious tapas and food, the type is bold and impacting and is painted onto wooden planks similar to containers used to travel food around this is particularly native to country’s such as Cuba and other exotic countrys’.

Great Preston– Sign while entering the village Great Preston • LS26 Great Preston is a small village jont to several other villages around Leeds such as Allerton Bywater and Kippax, there are several signs dotted over the villages of wheels and minecarts to symbolise the history of the mines in these areas and also to remorialise those who lost their lives in the pits.

The Glass Blower – Castleford 15 Bank Street • Castleford • WF10 1JD The most popular pub in Castleford! The pub is named after the town’s past working history of glass blowing although this not true to this day the town used to be known for its industrial era places of work such as mining, malt (which is still running till this day) and a mill which used to belong to Allisons bread it used to be the worlds largest water powered stone grinding flour mill. Long long ago it used to be home to a roman settlement.

Trinity Leeds, Directly above Trinity Kitchen– Leeds City Centre Albion Street • Leeds • LS1 5AT In and around Leeds is filled with some creative graffiti spaces like this one in trinity there is another behind the corn exchange and possibly many more!

Urban Quater (Barbers)– Wakefield City Centre 4 Wood Street • Wakefield • WF1 2ED This traditional barber shop is Modern and upbeat - fitting to current trends. The barber has been around for only 3 years (2012) The logotype is bold and flowing with a smooth script underneath.

The Hedley Verity – Leeds City Centre 48 Woodhouse Lane • Leeds • LS2 8JT The Hedley Verity is a staple to Leeds City Centre’s night life close by to the Leeds College of Art building (Vernon Street) home to a beautiful mosaic piece. The typeface is of 3D nature (Boxed) and a simple yet clear serif font.

Trinity Leeds, Directly above Trinity Kitchen– Leeds City Centre Albion Street • Leeds • LS1 5AT Leeds Trinity is home to culture and diversity there are many pieces of art scattered throughout the shopping complex this sign located obviously next the washrooms is a beautiful example of led signs particularly the typeface chosen.

Xscape Castleford 1 Colorado Way • Castleford (Leeds/Wakefield) • WF10 4TA X is by far the most difficult letter in the alpahbet alongside of course Z this is because it is not used very often! This X was found on the ceiling of Xscape in Castleford, 3D box type made to look like ice.

Sydney Green, Situated behind munro house – Leeds City Centre Duke Street • Leeds • LS9 8AG A beautiful sign handpainted, faded and hidden away at the far end of Leeds directly behind Munro House. The Sign is believed to be up to 70 years old and has seen some wear and tear.


Z

Roomzzz – Leeds City Centre 10 Swinegate • Leeds • LS1 4AG 3D box logo type for the ‘Roomzzz’ hotel although this type is simple it is far from boring the use of ‘zzz’ adds to the atmosphere of the hotel. It is a simple script font.
