Beeswax Candle Workshop

Holiday Dog Treats

Join local crafter Donna Rains for a fun afternoon making beeswax candles just in time for your holiday dinner. Participants will make a pair of candles for themselves and another pair to give away to someone special. The candles will contain no artificial colorants or fragrances.

Santa Paws is here to show you how to make a tasty treat for that special canine member of the family! Rebecca Loomis, from Laurel Pointe Kennel, will be here to teach pet owners how to make an apple carrot dog treat with holiday decorations.

Mah Jongg

Monday, December 3rd • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.

Books and Banter

Worried what to easily serve your family on Christmas morning? Teressa Gibbs has the answer and will share her ideas and recipes during this informative cooking demonstration. Sample tastings will be available for participants.

This month we’ll be discussing Phaedra Patrick’s The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper. When Arthur finds a charm bracelet belonging to his late wife, he sets off to discover the importance of each charm and learn more about his wife along the journey.

“Cool Yule” Wreath

Locked containers from Secure Stream will be on site for collecting confidential documents. Full containers will be picked up and taken to the local Secure Stream site for shredding and recycling. Limit of three banker-size boxes per person.

Frontier LIVE in Concert

Friday, December 14th • 6-7:30pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION Frontier is a harmony-driven Kentucky band featuring brothers Ethan and Andrew Worley, their cousin Caleb Caudill, and Jon Watts. With deep roots in the classic sounds of the 70’s, the band has been said to “breathe a new but nostalgic life into today’s soundscape.” The band loves what they do, and this shines through in their energetic performances, unforgettable harmonies, and skilled musicianship. Audiences can always expect upbeat, honest, feel-good songs and a rockin’ good show.

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, the library writers’ group is perfect for you. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

True Crime Cases Wednesday Matinee Movie: Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love Wednesday, December 12th • 2-3:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED

An unexpected blizzard threatens the Parton family, while at the same time Dolly’s father and family make sacrifices to raise enough money to finally buy his wife the wedding ring he could never afford to give her. Meanwhile, an important person in little Dolly’s life begins to see that her amazing voice and musical gift might just be made for something bigger than rural Tennessee. This film is rated PG.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, December 20th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month we’ll be discussing 15 Seconds by Andrew Gross. When a successful plastic surgeon is framed for the murder of a police officer, he must discover who the murderer is and why they are trying to frame him.

Holiday Trivia Game for Adults December 4th-18th Location: Skylight NO REGISTRATION (Ages 18+)

Get into the holiday spirit by participating in the Holiday Trivia Game for Adults. Pick up the trivia game sheet in the library skylight area, read the instructions carefully, and then have fun seeking the correct answers. Completed entries must be received by 8pm Tuesday, December 18th, late entries will not be accepted. The winning entry will receive a $50 gas card graciously provided by the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library. One entry per adult. If a tie(s) occurs, a drawing from these entries will take place to determine the winner.

Service Spotlight: My Heritage Database Access over 6 billion historical records, including census, military, newspapers, birth/ marriage/death records, directories, family trees, and many other record types. The record collections are most comprehensive for North America and Europe, but the database does contain hundreds of millions of records from other regions. This convenient service gives patrons the ability to print from anywhere, on almost any device. You can print from home, inside the library using your laptop, or with your mobile device. What’s Your Reindeer Name? December 1st-20th Location: Teen Space NO REGISTRATION

Let the Reindeer Games begin! Stop by the Teen Space to discover what your reindeer name is! Once you find out, use one of our reindeer templates to create a reindeer that is unique to your personality. Be sure to add your reindeer to our festive bulletin board so everyone can see. All teens who participate will be entered to win a $25 Amazon gift card straight from the North Pole! Entries must be received by 8pm on the 20th, and the winner will be drawn on the morning of the 21st. One entry per teen.

Stone Soup & Other Heartwarming Tales Tuesday, December 4th • 11am, 1pm, or 6pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

This show focuses on the true meaning of the season… giving. Three classic tales, “Stone Soup”, “The Gift of the Magi”, and “The Drum: A Tale from India”, help students learn about what it means to give a gift with an open heart. This performance is part of our Playhouse Theatrical Series sponsored by Cumberland Valley National Bank and the Laurel County Public Library. This will be the final performance of this year’s theatrical series. Next spring we’ll have teen acting workshops with the Kentucky Shakespeare Theatre, Apollo the Moon with Lexington Children’s Theatre, and so much more!

Storytime with the London Police Dept.

Children’s Christmas Movie

An officer from the London Police Department will be here to share a story with us! Following the story we’ll have an activity you can take home with you.

This month we’ll be watching Santa Buddies. When the magical icicle at Santa’s North Pole starts to melt, and Christmas is in danger, the Snow Buddies are there to save the day! This film is rated G.

11am • Saturday Storytime Which Storytime is best for your child? Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers!

Ready to Read: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills.

Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities. Saturday Storytime: Fun for all ages, this storytime is a way to fill your Saturday morning with excitement!


OUTREACH SERVICES

As the temperature drops it makes it more difficult for some patrons to come to the library. Do you know someone with mobility or transportation issues who would enjoy a library delivery or bookmobile stop? Send them our way! After a simple application process, we’ll work them into our routes as soon as possible and they’ll enjoy getting library materials every two weeks from our bookmobile staff. ON DISPLAY Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness December 8th - December 20th This traveling exhibition explores the interconnectedness of wellness, illness and cultural life for Native Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) developed and produced Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness. The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office, in partnership with NLM, tours the exhibition to America’s libraries.

Pop-Up Book Magic December 1st - 31st A pop-up book can bring out the kid in anyone. It’s hard to resist touching and feeling the pages as they come to life in front of your eyes. Visit the library and enjoy some spectacular pop-up books, while seeing how these elaborate books require the genius of paper engineers, printers, illustrators, and writers. This collection was graciously donated by Daniel Maye.

Special Holiday Hours The library will be closed December 24th and 25th in observance of Christmas.

The library will also be closing at 5pm on December 31st, and will remain closed on January 1st for New Years Day. Be sure to come in and stock up on items but if the holidays have you too busy, you can access our extensive downloadable collection of eBooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines through our website!
