Free Paper Shredding at the Library

Special Adults Program: Fire Safety

Are you concerned about identity theft and unauthorized disclosure of private information? The library has the answer to your dilemma. Locked containers from Secure Stream will be on site for collecting confidential documents. Full containers will be picked up and taken to the local Secure Stream site for shredding and recycling.

Meet our heroes from the London City Fire Department. During this program participants will learn tips about fire prevention and safety, see tools and equipment used by fire fighters, and tour a fire truck. Participants’ caretakers need to be present. For ages 16 and older.

Thursday, May 2nd • 1-2:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED Summer is in the air and it’s time to let your creativity “blossom” during this fun workshop. Participants will use a wooden board to design and paint their own decorative summer sign.

ArtWalk 2019

Friday, May 10th • 4-7pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION RTEC ArtWalk is a free family event that will showcase local and regional artists who combine astounding visual art with unique craftsmanship. Artists will be demonstrating their skills on-site. Finished items will be available for purchase from the artists, if desired. This year art activities for teens and children will take place from 4-6pm in the area near the auditorium.

Designing Supermarket Flowers into Beautiful Bouquets Tuesday, May 7th • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Green Thumbs Garden Club member Drucie Brown will show us how to transform inexpensive flowers into expensive bouquets. Proper treatments that enable flowers to stay fresh longer will also be discussed.


Mah Jongg

Thursday, May 9th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION Similar to the Western game of rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. Experienced players, see if the tiles fall your way during a fun evening of play. If you’ve never played, please contact us before attending.

Heart Healthy Eating: Don’t Pass the Salt Tuesday, May 14th • 6-7:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

Salt is an ingredient in just about every type of processed food or restaurant meal, so when you begin a low-sodium heart diet, figuring out where to start can seem overwhelming. The goal of this class is to go over the basics: low sodium staples to stock your pantry, ways to reduce salt and boost flavor in your home cooking, and heart-friendly restaurant recommendations. Presenter Kaelin Telschow will discuss her family’s adjustment to a low-sodium heart diet and will demonstrate several heart healthy dishes. Sample tastings will be available for participants.

Bite Size Learning: Melanoma Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention

Just in time for summer, Dr. Don Morring will be here to discuss the following topics in relation to melanoma skin cancer: prevention, causes, risk factors, early detection, diagnosis, and much more. Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health.

Matinee Movie: Wild Hogs

Wednesday, May 15th • 2-4pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC This month the library is featuring the hilarious classic comedy Wild Hogs starring Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, and William H. Macy. You won’t stop laughing as four suburban biker wannabes looking for adventure hit the open road, but get more than they bargained for when they encounter a New Mexico gang. Rated PG-13.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, May 16th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION This month we’ll discuss Tony Hillerman’s crime novel, The Blessing Way. An abandoned corpse is found with a mouth full of sand at a crime scene that is devoid of tracks or useful clues leading Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn to suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

Writers’ Ink

Monday, May 20th • 4-5pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the Laurel County Public Library for this month’s writers’ group meeting. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

Holiday Hours: The library will be closed on Sunday, May 26th and Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day.


True Crime Cases: Dear Zachary Tuesday, May 28th • 5-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED RTEC

This month we’ll be watching and discussing the documentary Dear Zachary. In 2001, 28-year old Dr. Andrew Bagby is found dead in a Pennsylvania park. He’d been shot by his pregnant ex-girlfriend who then fled to Canada and was eventually allowed to walk free on bail. Andrew’s enraged parents campaign to gain custody of their grandson and to convict their son’s killer. Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne shot this film hoping to give his best friend’s son an opportunity to discover who his dad was.

Free transportation is available for designated programs by calling the library and scheduling what time you’d like to be picked up and brought to the library and what time you’d like to arrive back at home. Your trip to and from the library will be covered so you’ll be on your way to enjoying all the library offers. Look for the RTEC symbol to see which programs qualify for transportation. Transportation for other library services is available as scheduling permits. All arrangements MUST be made 48 hours prior to the time you wish to visit the library to allow for scheduling. Would you like to learn more about what retail and industrial businesses have joined or are joining our community? Paula Thompson, Executive Director of London-Laurel County Industrial Development Authority, will provide updates on these businesses, new jobs created, and their economic impact on London.

Ancestry Library Edition provides access to billions of historical documents, millions of historical photos, plus local narratives, oral histories, indexes, and other resources in over 30,000 databases that span from the 1500s to the 2000s.

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age. With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+ to participate.

Computer Basics

Thursday, May 9th • 1-2:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC Learn basics like how to start your computer, save and re-open a file, and create a folder in this class.

The MyHeritage database contains over 6 billion historical records, including census, military, newspapers, birth/ marriage/death records, directories, family trees, and many other record types. The record collections are most comprehensive for North America and Europe, but the database does contain hundreds of millions of records from other regions.

HeritageQuest is a collection of databases including the U.S. Federal Census (1790-1940) searchable index with record images; the PERSI Archive, a regional history and genealogy index; selected records from the Revolutionary War; Freedman’s Bank, which includes records from depositors in the bank of African American ancestry; and an assortment of digitized genealogy materials such as family history books, city directories, and tax lists.

Online Job Research

Friday, May 24th • 1-2:30pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED RTEC Looking for a job? This class will give you some tips to searching online using popular job search sites and other useful resources.

FamilySearch is one of the largest genealogy organization in the world. Millions of people use FamilySearch records, resources, and services each year to learn more about their family history. Their database contains over 4 billion names and thousands of images archived over the past 100 years. We also offer our Kentucky Room located in the back of the library which is dedicated to the history, literature, and unique artwork you can only find in Kentucky. There you can access Laurel County census records, military records, American Indian records, archived editions of the Sentinel Echo, and more!

Fire Safety with the London Fire Department

Monday, May 6th • 10:30-11:30am Location: Community Room NO REGISTRATION RTEC The London City Fire Department will roll in with a firetruck to give kids an up close look at all the equipment that is used to save lives. Get inside a firetruck, try on the gear, and learn what it takes to be a fire fighter. Kids will also learn fire safety tips that will teach them what to do in an emergency.

In the air, water, and even under foot, insects inhabit every domain of our daily lives, performing essential functions that balance our fragile ecosystem on earth. By using cutting-edge technology and custom methods, artist Bob Sober created Small Wonders: Insects in Focus, an exhibition of breathtaking beauty that allows viewers to see this hidden world like they’ve never seen it before. Small Wonders aims to inspire, in an artistic way, our natural curiosity to understand the form, function, and diversity of nature.
