Medicare Made Fun!

Fall Diabetes Self-Management Series

Overwhelmed by all of the Medicare information and misinformation? Tom Potts will help you navigate through the maze of options including supplements, advantage plans, and drug plans. Join us for this education only workshop where we make Medicare fun. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to get the facts and have a few laughs at the same time.

Want to take more control of your diabetes? Here’s your chance. Registered Dietitian and Licensed Diabetes Educator, Lynnett Renner, from the Laurel County Health Department will lead a three-part self-management series. The Laurel County Health Department Healthy Living With Diabetes SelfManagement Program is recognized by the CDC Diabetes Education Accreditation Program (DEAP) and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).

Join us at Bookmarked where you can take part in great conversations with others who love books as much as you do. You’ll discover new favorites, explore different genres, and share thoughts about a monthly selection. We want to hear what you think, so make plans to join us the second Tuesday of each month at 6pm to get Bookmarked. This month’s selection is I Found You by Lisa Jewell.

Bite Size Learning: Breast Cancer Awareness Wednesday, October 16th • 12-1pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED (Deadline: October 14th at 12pm) Bite Size Learning is an educational, free lunch series brought to you by CHI Saint Joseph Health. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. In honor of this, Dr. Kathryne Blair of CHI Saint Joseph Health will be presenting a program focusing on: signs of breast cancer, types of breast cancer & screenings, surgical therapies, and treatments.

Jordan Allen and The Bellwethers is an Alternative-Country-Folk band from Kentucky that recently released a new album entitled “Weary in Well Doing.” This album has been nominated for a Josie Music Award for Album of the Year. The band’s music focuses on telling stories and is accented with electric cello and guitar to create a unique musical experience. During live shows the band focuses on blending familiar songs with originals to keep you singing the whole time.

If you’re a current member of the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library, don’t miss the special preview of the Fall Book Sale. Love a bargain? Come to the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library Fall Book Sale and pick up a few gently used books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, etc. to keep you busy. Proceeds support numerous library programs and services for library patrons of all ages.

Bag Day at the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale Saturday, October 26th • 10am-3pm Location: Auditorium NO REGISTRATION

Saturday is the final day of the Friends Fall Book Sale. During this one day only special sale, bags will be provided and each full bag is only $3. Come early for the best selection!


Matinee Movie: Aladdin

Writers’ Ink

Join in on the fun and fantasy during this wonderful 2019 remake of the timeless adventures of Aladdin. The story involves a kind-hearted street urchin, a beautiful princess, a power-hungry Grand Vizier, and of course, a fabulous genie! The movie is rated PG.

If you’re interested in improving your writing skills and finding other writers to share ideas and techniques with, then come to the Laurel County Public Library for this month’s writers’ group meeting. Associate Professor Amanda Morris from Somerset Community College will facilitate the session.

Murder by the Book

Thursday, October 17th • 6-7pm Location: Kentucky Room NO REGISTRATION The book we’ll be reading this month is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. The year is 1896. The city is New York. Newspaper reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned by his friend Dr. Laszlo Kreizler – a psychologist, or “alienist”—to view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy found abandoned on the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge. From there the two embark on a revolutionary effort in criminology, creating a psychological profile of the perpetrator based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who will kill again before their hunt is over.

Halloween Classic Movie: Young Frankenstein Monday, October 28th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION APPRECIATED

Get into the spirit of Halloween by joining us in a special showing of “the scariest comedy of all time.” This cult classic film stars Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, and of course, Marty Feldman. It’s great to watch for the first time and even better for the twentieth time. This spoof-style movie follows the adventures of an American neurosurgeon as he tries to prove that his infamous grandfather, Dr. Victor von Frankenstein, was not as insane as people thought. For ages 13 and older. The movie is rated PG.

Mah Jongg A Spirited Evening of Ghostly Tales Monday, October 21st • 6-7pm Location: Community Room REGISTRATION APPRECIATED

Get into the Halloween spirit during this highly acclaimed show, presented by Mark Comley, which focuses on Kentucky ghost stories and tales from the beyond. The show is fun, yet scary, and is suitable for teens and adults only and not for the faint of heart.

Tuesday, October 29th • 5:30-7:30pm Location: Kentucky Room REGISTRATION REQUIRED Get in on the fun during this month’s Mah Jongg session. Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation that involves a degree of chance. This mentally challenging game can assist in building and strengthening social networks as well as providing an evening of entertainment.


True Crime Cases: Halloween Murders Wednesday, October 30th • 6-7pm Location: Auditorium REGISTRATION REQUIRED

This month we’ll be discussing famous murders that occurred on Halloween, including the Liske family murders, the murder of Martha Moxley, and the murders committed by “Son of Sam” killer, David Berkowitz. No research will be needed for this month. The program facilitator will be outlining different cases during the discussion.

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES The Laurel County Public Library offers a wide range of technology classes to help you develop and improve the skills that are so important in the digital age. With different topics being taught each month, a knowledgeable staff, and hands-on learning, there’s sure to be something we can help you with. Participants must have a library card, valid email address, and be 18+ to participate.

COMING SOON 1968: A Folsom Redemption November 11th - January 7th

Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of a landmark event, 1968: A Folsom Redemption is a collection of photographs and memories of two journalists lucky enough to be among a handful of eyewitnesses to the historic Johnny Cash concerts at Folsom Prison. This candid and personal photography exhibition covers a critical juncture in the career of Johnny Cash, one of the twentieth century’s most beloved performers.

The Performing Arts Club is hosting its first rehearsal for Alice in Wonderland. New members are always welcome to the Performing Arts Club, where the focus is discovering artistic expression and exploring your creativity. If you love acting on stage, then this is definitely a session you don’t want to miss!

Be super festive and arrive in costume and get ready to have a spooktacular time. The movie is rated PG.

Spooky Sugar Skulls

October is the perfect month to look at Expressionist artist Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream. Let’s learn about the artist and his famous painting, and then we’ll create our own painting. We’ll be working with oil pastels.

Did you know sugar skulls are still used in Mexico to decorate graves of loved ones on the Day of the Dead celebration? Come and paint your own wooden sugar skulls at this spooky art program.

Along with his trusty assistant, Igor, Dr. Stein has created some of the world’s most amazing inventions! But those inventions would be nothing without YOUR imagination. It will take Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to make his latest masterpiece come to life! This show helps students learn why STEM subjects are so important to the modern world while opening up an exciting world of STEM discovery. Meet ancient Egyptian engineer, Khufu the Great, mathematician Pythagoras, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Madame Curie and more! If you liked FrankenSTEM, then Igor and the Masters of STEM makes a great complement to that show, or it works all alone as an amazing STEM adventure!

Babygarten: Designed for children up to age 3, this program provides a basic understanding of child development, while providing an engaging time for children and caregivers! Ready to Read: This interactive storytime is designed for preschool aged children, and focuses on building cognitive, social, physical, and early literacy skills. Readers are Leaders: Geared for school aged students, this program provides a time to discuss books, play games, and participate in exciting hands-on activities.
